T

he Revell 1:12 GT500 is a great kit, but adding the Scale Motorsport GT500 'Big Scale Detail Set', carbon-fibre effect decal template set and upholstery decals will transform it into a truly stunning replica. The SMS product includes a set of four, highly detailed 'Torq Thrust D' wheels consisting of resin centres that mate perfectly to turned aluminium outer rims. Further complementing the wheels are photo-etch brake rotors that mount to resin hubs and resin Brembo callipers. The wheels can be taken on and off the car thanks to a turned aluminium

centre-threaded hubs, ideal for showing off the magnificent brakes. Machined aluminium valve stems finish off the wheel package. Photo-etched parts are also included to add detail to the radiator and other details within the engine bay as well as the cabin interior. The composite decal set is Scale Motorsport 1:12 Twill Weave pattern. They are pre-printed to fit the bonnet (hood), roof, rear spoiler and boot lid (trunk). There is also an extra sheet included if you wish to cover other parts of the car such as the lower front spoiler, rear lower spoiler valence and possibly the side mirrors.

The upholstery pattern sheet has red and black checker patters to complement the interior, no matter what colour you decide to paint it. They are very thin and conform perfectly with minimum decal solvent. Now, let's take a look at a few highlights of this fine set, applied to the Revell Mustang kit! ● Scale Motorsport products are available from; www.scalemotorsport.com www.hiroboy.com www.grandprixmodels.com

REVELL 1:12 FORD MUSTANG GT500 (85-2623) WITH SCALE MOTORSPORT BIG SCALE DETAIL SET (SMS #8080)

I painted the body with a Badger 350 airbrush with House of Kolor Candy Apple Red base-coat over a black base-coat to give it a nice dark rich hue.

The bonnet decals are applied. What I like about the template decals is the way they have a dorsal line down the middle and go in a 'V' direction meeting in the middle. It will look stunning once it's under a final clear coat.

The roof decals are next. The decals conform very well with a little coaxing by Microsol. Make sure the surface they are being applied to is smooth or it will show through the decal.

Even before clear-coat, the colour looks rich and radiant and will complement the carbon-fibre effect decals nicely. I applied a coat of inter-coat clear to prevent the Candy Apple Red from lifting and running into the decals during the final clear coat process.

The rear trunk and spoiler are decalled. The boot lid decals cover the back of the lid as well.

Allow the decals to dry overnight and then wash the body with dish soap prior to clear-coating. I am an avid two part-clear user. The clear used here is ‘OMNI’ made by PPG. It sprays beautifully and polishes just as well. The shine is breathtaking; I never thought the Mustang would look so good! Here is the bonnet after clear coat and polishing. The results are stunning.

REVELL 1:12 FORD MUSTANG GT500 (85-2623) WITH SCALE MOTORSPORT BIG SCALE DETAIL SET (SMS #8080)

I decided to use the bright red inserts from the interior sheet for the seats on my build; a black pattern is also included on the sheet.

Here are the exquisite brakes in the detail set. The centres are resin and the drilled rotors are photo-etch. The callipers are also resin and conveniently, they fit to the existing mounts on the kit's suspension.

The contrast is definitely noticeable. I applied a dull-coat to the seats after decal application to make them blend in even further.

Once the rotor is screwed to the wheel you have a detailed and realistic brake and tyre assembly. Note the machined aluminium central boss with ‘cobra’ logo decal in its centre.

Here are all four wheel/brake assemblies ready to be applied to the rest of the build. The SMS set totally transforms this vital area and brings the model to life.

The radiator shroud is located on the photo-etched sheet. I covered mine in carbon-fibre effect decal and clear coated it with two-part clear.

Scale Motorsport GT500 'Big Scale Detail Set' for Revell Ford GT500 SMS's set is made to extremely fine tolerances and comes with detailed instructions. The resin parts require a very small amount of clean-up before they can be primed, painted and assembled. www.scalemotorsport.com

The photo-etched sheets carry the brake rotors, mesh panels for the radiator, rocker-cover faces, seatbelt buckles and many other small parts.

The cast-resin wheel spokes are beautifully detailed and look magnificent when in place on the model. Just a little clean-up is required, prior to priming and painting.

The rims are machined from aluminium and provide the perfect finishing touch for the ‘Torq Thrust D’ wheels.

The brake hardware – hubs and callipers – are cast in resin and the central bosses are machined from aluminium. Metal air-valves are also included, fitting into holes marked in the resin spoke discs. The instructions show how the various elements of the brakes build up.

Mini Review... The LINDBERG LINE 1:170 BRIG OF WAR kit no.HL203/12 www.round2models.com

The other decal sheet provided with SMS’s set carries the seat pad patterns, with a black or red option.

This is a kit from the golden age of scale modelling, the early 1960s. It depicts the ‘Brig of War’ from the American Revolutionary War. The model is a little basic but rather charming and would be a fun exercise to build up. The sails are moulded at ‘full billow’ in kit plastic and a printed sheet carries the flags.

The large areas of carbon-fibre effect decal on the bonnet, roof and boot look amazing on the Mustang and give it a unique edge. The decal is transparent, so must be applied over a black background to create the composite look.

The SMS Torq Thrust D wheels – resin spokes with aluminium rims – look fantastic on the model.

The House of Kolor Candy Apple Red looks gorgeous, particularly when lit up by photography studio lights.

KIT PREVIEW TAMIYA 1:12 NISSAN FAIRLADY 240ZG SC STREET-CUSTOM ● KIT NO.12051

RETURN OF A RETRO RACER! The fabulous 1970s Nissan 240ZG is back, this time with custom wheels and new carbs to give it an extra splash of street-racer cred

All the charm of the original release can still be found in the box; there are lots of working parts (these will need careful application of the liquid cement) plus beautifully detailed seats and lashings of chrome. The detailed replica of the car’s straight-six engine is real highlight of the model.

T

amiya originally launched this rather impressive 1:12 kit of the Nissan 240ZG (original item number 12010) way back in 1973, so the moulds are over forty years old. Take a close look at the kit parts however and you'd be hard pressed to find any signs of ageing, either in sophistication of detail or mould degradation; the parts have stood the test of time remarkably well. The kit originally came with a very complete replica of the 2.4 litre, straight-six engine and

gearbox, visible on the finished model thanks to a clear-moulded bonnet (another in opaque white plastic is provided; both lift up). The engine of this newly revamped 'street custom' edition gets new carburettors, machined aluminium intake trumpets, photo-etched carburettor heat-shield, engine bay suspension strut-tower brace plus RS Watanabe magnesium eight-spoke wheels and photo-etched parts to recreate the buckles for the racing style seatbelts. Pre-cut fabric webbing is provided for the belts. The opening doors and hatchback (with lift-strut) are retained

from the original kit, so the detailed interior can be shown off with ease. The front wheels are steerable, connected to the steering wheel via a working rack and pinion system. The model comes from an era when working details were king, so here we have an articulated suspension system with steel springs and operating shockabsorbers, working steering system as mentioned, reclining seats and even moveable foot pedals! Plenty of pre-painting test-fitting will be required for all these fiddly but fun features to operate as intended, so it'll be a major modelling

project and one not to be rushed. The reward will be a magnificent rendition of this classic Japanese street racer with detail in every nook and cranny. Paint it metallic brown if you must, but take my word for it, really sparkles in bright orangey-red! ● MN MODEL SPEC SCALE: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:12 MATERIALS: . . It’s great to see this model again and the new wheels give it a fresh look. Marvellous stuff.

Tamiya chose to re-issue the big Nissan because it’s still a deeply cool car. With the new additions it’s reborn as a modern day street racer...

The kit now comes with a set of four new RS Watanabe mag wheels, machined aluminium intake trumpets, new carbs and a photo-etched set.

GOING FOR GOLD! At just fifteen years of age, Jake Kilshaw won Gold in the Juniors Class at the 2013 UK IPMS Nationals, with his Tamiya 1:20 Williams BMW FW24. Here, he describes how he built and constructed the model

F

irst of all, I’d like to introduce myself… I am fifteen years old and I build race cars. I started building models in 2009 and have been building race cars since mid-2012. With these, I regularly enter model competitions around the UK and have won two Golds at Scale Modelworld, most recently in 2013 with this Williams FW24 Formula One car. Every time I go to a model show, it is always quite sad to see how few juniors there are in the hobby. I’m sure that many of you would agree with me that it would be nice to see more in the hobby, and I would like to show other people what is achievable at a relatively young age.

2002 WILLIAMS

The 2002 season was dominated by Michael Schumacher and his Ferrari. The seven-times Formula 1 World Champion finished on the podium in every single race of the 2002 season, making it one of his most successful ever. There was only one car which was even close to beating the Ferrari F2002, and that was the Williams FW24. The Williams F1 Team entered 2002 armed with two race-winning drivers in the form of Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher (Michael’s brother), as well as a fantastic design team including Patrick Head. From the start, it was clear that the FW24 would be capable of winning races. Unfortunately, the FW24 performed slightly below its expectations, winning only one race under the skilful driving of Ralf Schumacher in Sepang, Malaysia. Despite this, Williams still finished second in the Constructor’s Championship, behind Scuderia Ferrari.

IN 1:20...

My model represents Juan Pablo Montoya’s car from the 2002 United States Grand Prix, held on the road course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This was one of the most controversial races in history, with a staged 1-2 finish between the two Ferrari drivers that ultimately backfired.

Williams’ race wasn’t smooth either, because the two drivers collided with each other on lap 2. Juan Pablo finished the race in 4th position, and Ralf towards the back of the field in 16th. To build it as the US GP version, I had to alter the rear wing, to replicate the low-downforce setup used at the high-speed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I did this by removing one of the panels, and changing the angle of the main element. For me, the car has a very striking livery, a two-tone design of white and metallic blue separated by silver stripes. Because of this, the model would look very good built up, however the Tamiya kit is designed in a way that allows you to construct a ‘pit maintenance’ scene, with stands, and most of the necessary engine, gearbox and radiator detail. For this reason, I thought that it would be best to build it broken down, to show off all of the mechanical detail. This model took me around five months to complete, throughout the summer of 2013. The biggest challenge for me was painting the bodywork, as it requires some very careful (and difficult!) masking. After preparing the parts for paint, I sprayed all of the white and partially white parts in Halfords’ White Plastic Primer and after a few days of drying, I masked, and painted the rest of it in Zero Paints from Hiroboy. After the final coat of blue, I removed the masking immediately, as to avoid any cracking, which can occur when the masking tape is taken off dry paint. I left the body parts untouched for another week, and then I clear coated them with Zero Paints’ Pre-thinned Varnish. Once again, I allowed this to dry for a further week, before decaling. The decals included in the kit would have worked well, however I found a replacement set of Studio 27 Cartograf decals from Spotmodel. I used these instead of the kit decals for three reasons: the silver stripes were printed much more clearly; they included a pair of white fill-in patches TMMI 227 September 2014

to aid with masking on a tricky part of the cowling; and they were just generally a better quality set. When I came to applying these decals, I was glad for the white patches, which helped a great deal, saving me from a very difficult bit of masking. With regards to the ‘inside’ of the car, I built it mainly out of the box, due to the fantastic amount of detail. The only thing I added were wires, which were important, however I was not surprised that these were missing from the kit, as few plastic models include them. Modern Formula One engines are usually small, however the Williams has a 3000cc BMW V10, which seems massive compared to the 1600cc V6 motors used in Formula One today! By using a variety of Alclad II paints, mainly Dull Aluminium and Magnesium, I was able to recreate the metallic colours on the engine block. The black parts are all painted with Vallejo black, which gives a good effect - almost halfway between flat and semi-gloss. I used a set of aftermarket Tamiya seatbelts in the interior, which are a mixture of ribbon and photo-etch buckles. The steering wheel took a lot of time to paint accurately, and I achieved the final result by painting the blue handles and the black panel with Vallejo, and the buttons with Sharpies. I entered this Williams into the Junior class at IPMS Scale Modelworld 2013 in Telford, and I won a Gold Medal with it. ●

DIORAMA SPECIAL FEATURE: OPERATION OVERLORD JUNE 6TH 1944 1:35 AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT DIORAMA

THE LONGEST DAY Another jaw-dropping diorama in 1:35 from Japanese modeller Mr Kase. This time, a scene from the D-Day landings featuring a massive, scratchbuilt LCT(5)

B

ack in TMMI Issue 220 (February 2014) we featured an extraordinary amphibious assault diorama by Japanese master-modeller, Mr Kase. The work was created to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Operation Urgent Fury, the US assault on Grenada and now, with the 70th Anniversary of Operation Overlord, the landing of Allied liberation forces on the beaches of Normandy on June 6th, 1944, he has created another breathtaking scene in 1:35. It depicts an LCT landing craft disgorging its load of six Sherman tanks onto the beach, alongside a GPA 'Seeps' and a pair of LCVP 'Higgins' boats, all set within highly realistic waves breaking on the shoreline. It's an astonishing scene, made all the more impressive as the LCT(5) is a full scratchbuild, not a commercial kit. It took Mr Kase around two and a half months to complete the model, a remarkably short period of time considering how much work was

involved! As mentioned, the Landing Craft Tank (LCT) was scratchbuilt; there were many variations of this vessel type and the simplest design was chosen to ease the scratchbuilding process. The LCT was painted with a mixture of Tamiya Acrylics XF-50 Field Blue and XF-82 Ocean Grey, in a ratio of 50:50, using wartime colour photos as references (see pages 26 to 28 this issue).

THE VEHICLES

The AFV models used for this diorama consist of six Tamiya M4 Sherman Early Productions (32505), two Tamiya Ford GPAs (35336), one Tamiya M16 US Multiple Gun Motor Carriage (35081), two Tamiya Willys Jeeps (35219), two Italeri LCVPs (6479) and one Italeri Dodge Ambulance (226). The wading trunks one the tanks and the M8 trailers were scratchbuilt by making a simple drawings of the parts needed, printing them on white-paper sticker sheets which were in turn fixed to Tamiya 1.0mm Pla-Plate (styrene

sheet). The panels were then cut out and assembled in the 'mass-production' manner required for so many tanks! I painted all the vehicles using Tamiya Spray TS-5 Olive Drab as a basic colour, then oversprayed that with XF-62 Olive Drab which was mixed slightly lighter than the aerosol TS-5. The models were finished off with colour-washes and some weathering, but this was kept light as the machines would have been clean upon embarkation and were yet to encounter dirty terrain. The markings on the vehicle were home-made, dry-decals made with PC software and printed out.

AMERICAN FLAGS

To create the American flags on the LCT and the lead tank, I made a dry-decals using my PC with graphics software and once printed out, applied them to 0.2mm Tamiya Plastic Paper (94946). They were then heated gently with a small gas burner and formed into a 'fluttering' shapes.

A view down onto the cargo deck of the LCT(5). Here we can see the extensive work undertaken by the author in the construction of the craft.

The first Sherman is away! The modeller used six of Tamiya’s M4 Sherman Early Production kits, building them straight from the box – and they look pretty good! Note the realistic build-up of sand on the beach and well-weathered loading ramp.

As we saw in his Gama Goat diorama (TMMI 220), Mr Kase is an expert in the re-creation of highly realistic water effects in scale. The surging green swell of the cold Channel water is perfect.

DIORAMA SPECIAL FEATURE: OPERATION OVERLORD JUNE 6TH 1944 1:35 AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT DIORAMA

V I mistakenly

put fifty stars on the flag, but realised after the completion of the diorama that the US flag only had forty-eight stars at that time! (The fifty-star flag was introduced in 1959). Someday, I will correct it.

HOW MANY FIGURES?

On this diorama there is a total forty-three figures, all of which are by Tamiya, except six by Italeri. All of the Tamiya figures received some modifications but the six Italeri LCVP crew figures were used unmodified. Tamiya Acrylics and enamel paints were used to paint the figures.

THE BEACH

Very fine, real sand was used to replicate the sandy beach and for the wet sand at the shoreline. Watercolour paints plus thinned enamel paints and, believe it or not, coffee – suitable colour for the wet sand – were used to form the seawater. The basic 'structure' of the water was made using paper-clay which was painted with white-primer at first, then finished with a mixture of colours including olive green and dark-yellow. These were applied very randomly, leaving some white surface portions to create the dark and rough water of the English Channel on that day. Then, the splashing waves and white crests of the waves were created with 'Clear Clay' (made by Kameshima

Shoten). This is a silicon-based clay which becomes transparent once dry. On the shoreline, Tamiya X-22 Clear Enamel was poured on directly to 'thicken' the seawater there. Finally, all seawater portions were covered with clear spray to create a uniformly glossy surface. A total of three days were needed for the creation of the seawater. As with the Grenada diorama, I thoroughly enjoyed creating this D-Day scene and again, it's an honour for me to see it appear in Tamiya Model Magazine. I hope you enjoy seeing my work! The model now 'lives' at Tamiya headquarters in Shizuoka City, Japan. ●

This big diorama is now owned by Tamiya themselves and is on display in the famous entrance hall at Tamiya’s Shizuoka City, Japan HQ, along with other scale modelling works of art. Go and see it, if you’re visiting Tamiya! Editor’s note; my deepest thanks go to Mr Yoshioka at Tamiya for liaising with Mr Kase and helping with my many questions about the diorama!

The plastic parts in this kit originate from the days of Matchbox (it came out as Kit No.PK-63) and is a fairly simple, but rather well designed little kit. The hull is waterline and the deck comes as one piece, and you’ll want to add some photo-etched railings etc to give a sharp edge, but out of the box it’s a neat production and well moulded too.

In the foreground we can see two US Navy sailors have ‘customised’ their jackets, presumably with the names of their home towns. Note how pale in colour the GIs’ jackets appear here. Also of note is the distinctly blue-toned colour of the landing craft, accurately replicated by the author on pages 20-25 this issue.

Jeeps on board the LCT ‘Channel Fever’, although clearly not for the final time, as they would be reversed on for rapid disembarkation on D-Day. Jeep ‘ASP-II’ is part of an armoured unit and has a patch of gas-detection paint on the bonnet that changes colour in the presence of gas munitions. Thankfully, this feature was redundant in WW2. Slightly out of focus in the background, we can just observe a GMC truck loaded with a Piper Cub spotter aircraft being driven onto an LCM-3.

A heavily laden 'Athey Track Laying Trailer' sits on the deck of an LCT(6). It is carrying fascines (wooden slats) held down with a coarse cargo net. The strips allow Allied vehicles to drive over the soft sand of the landing beaches. Note the olive drab painted cranes in the background, all necessary in forming the Normandy bridgehead.

FULL-BUILD: LARGE SCALE MOTORCYCLE TAMIYA 1:6 HARLEY DAVIDSON FAT BOY LO FLSTFB ● KIT NO.16041

Tamiya's magnificent new 1:6 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Lo provided the ideal opportunity for Phil Devos to roll out a few quotes from 'Terminator 2', even if it isn't quite the same bike...

Each step of the instructions is packed with information; various references, use of screws, vinyl tubing lengths, decoration, optional parts and more. For this assembly, each part was coded with a different colour by the author for sorting prior to painting (yellow for satin black, matt black to green, blue to glossy black) and pink is used for screws. Tamiya print the lengths of the vinyl tubing sections in the margins. Even the bags of 'hardware' have been thought through by Tamiya: screws or nuts that are similar in diameter or length are separated into bags A, B, C, D, E etc. An angler's storage box is handy for finding the right part at the right time.

Tamiya’s new 1:6 Harley-Davidson comes in a huge box with stunning artwork adorning the cover.

T

he bike from T2 was a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy FLSTF and it was seen performing some incredible stunts in the streets and flood channels of Los Angeles in the seminal 1991 film. Tamiya did actually release a 1:6 kit of the FLSTF that was used in the film (Item No.16029) but this is long since out of production and quite a rarity now. So, if you want to build a close replica of the T2 bike, Tamiya's new Fat Boy Lo is your best bet – and it's a hell of a good kit too.

I'LL BE BACK...

The bike has changed a lot in twenty years, but it still has the same look even if the differences in detailing are manifold. Exhausts, upholstery, different housings, rims etc., are all different and also the engine of course, since it is now a V-Twin, Twin Cam 96B 1584cc instead of the 'Evolution' original, but the general outline is almost identical to the legendary Soft-tail that left the Milwaukee factory in 1990. The closeness of the older Harley 'T2' kit to the new one led some modellers – me included – to think that the Fat Boy Lo was just an improved reissue of kit No.16029. My colleague and friend Eric Evain has the first version and has assured me that, apart from them both being 1:6 Harley Davidson kits by Tamiya, they have nothing in common. Most notably, the way the cylinder head fins are moulded as one block in the old version and are built up fin-by-fin in the new release show just how far the new kit has come since the 1990s. No, we are in the presence of a completely new model and one with particular attention paid to quality of detail and ease of assembly.

U

Tamiya offers a set of high quality brake discs from turned metal, plus a photo-etched metal muffler that will give a stamp of quality (and weight) to the model. The photo-etched details include the VIN number of the engine block and the frame, brake calliper logos and the Harley symbol for the support base. When the engraving is touched in with matt black, the result is stunning.

The original disks in chromed plastic (right), although of excellent quality, suffer from comparison with their counterparts in turned metal; the friction grooves, precision drilling, general appearance are all better.

Similarly, the replacement silencers (bottom) are a big improvement over the standard kit parts (top).

After the preliminary parts clean-up and assembly, we end up with a pile of sub-assemblies seen here.

The cylinder head bolts are trapped in place, and they will later fix the cylinders to the crankcase. Do not use cyanoacrylate glue here; the bolts must retain a slight amount of movement to facilitate the subsequent insertion of the cylinder heads parts.

FULL-BUILD: LARGE SCALE MOTORCYCLE TAMIYA 1:6 HARLEY DAVIDSON FAT BOY LO FLSTFB ● KIT NO.16041

THAT’S A NICE BIKE... V SAY, The contents of the box was

examined in a previous issue of TMMI (March 2014, Issue 221), so I will not repeat it here except to point out the contrast between the high parts-count and ease of assembly. The overall design of the model, the clarity of the instructions and precision of the mouldings is such that at no time did I feel 'lost' within the more complex sub-assemblies or experience any confusion in choosing parts. For example, even among the twenty or so different screws, nuts and bolts, it is very easy to recognize the correct one to use for the task at hand. I spent several evenings reading and re-reading the instructions in order to identify all the parts and their final colour, so I knew each sub-assembly stage almost by heart. To store the many small parts, I used a box from a hardware store that had compartments with a snap-shut lids, to avoid inadvertently mixing (or losing) anything! I left the chrome sprues in their bags right up to the point that I needed them, to ensure that they didn't get scratched; they are beautiful but quite delicate. And finally, I cleared off my workbench for this monster, as it would take up a lot of space during assembly...

Pay close attention to the various nuts and vinyl rings that must be trapped within some parts for later assembly; here for the rear fenders. Tweezers were needed to insert a forgotten nut, above right...

Obviously, it is better to cement some structures together before any paint is applied, using solvent-based glue (Tamiya Extra Thin Cement, 87038) rather than the cyanoacrylate to ensure maximum strength as the weight of the model will be substantial. The seam of the tank will only be partially sanded as much of it is completely hidden by the instrument-panel at end of assembly.

NO PROBLEMO (WELL, ALMOST)

One particular point did temper my enthusiasm; painting the wheel rims. They are chrome, but their interior discs should be satin black. This is really difficult to accomplish and I would have appreciated a pre-cut mask so a tidy line could be created, because it is a key visual element of the motorcycle. I'm actually quite surprised the designers did not design the rims in two parts – in chrome and black – which could be painted individually to achieve a perfect boundary. My attempt at this – visible in the pictures – led to an acceptable result, but this is the main challenge of the model and will test the skills of the modeller.

Operation 'black ops'! Everything is painted either gloss black, satin black or matt black. XF-1 was used for the lower engine brackets and the crown gear of the belt; satin for lots of very visible parts. The result of using TS-29 aerosol is impeccable, with a very fast drying time. Finally, TS-14 (gloss black) was used for few other parts. A coat of grey primer is reassuring but not absolutely essential so long as you degrease the kit parts well.

U

32 September 2014 TMMI 227

p 30-39 Harley 227MN.indd 32

30/07/2014 16:31

Engine assembly can begin and here the chrome parts start being used. Tamiya have optimised the moulds so the parts’ connection points to the sprue are almost always hidden on a concealed area of the kit component. Thus the side-cutters will not damage the coating and the mating surfaces can be safely sanded for effective cementing.

Here we see the first use of the spanners and an allen key provided in the box by Tamiya to fix the engine in the frame.

A delicate moment occurs when it's time to paint the wheel centres in satin black. The chrome plating adds two extra challenges; the masking tape adheres poorly and reflections caused by the plating hinder its application. Nevertheless, it can be done with a lot of patience but it is very hard (or impossible) to obtain a truly circular masking. When removing the masking, the paint peeled immediately creating an unrecoverable disaster, since the tears in the painted edge were readily visible. In short, another solution was needed.

Additional elements are fitted with the frame placed on the stand; starter plate, battery and oil tank. The rims were ‘pickled’ in brake fluid to remove the chrome plating. The wheels were then given a generous coat of TS-29 Satin Black. Masking was a little easier but the concave surface does not allow the masking tape to stay put for long. Therefore, we must paint quickly before untimely detachment of the tape. A layer of Alclad II Polished Aluminium was sprayed directly on the TS-29. The result is good but some of the splendour of the original plating was lost.

The inner faces of the wheels were sanded of their chromium plating to allow the glue cement to bond the plastic surfaces. The entire central area was then glued with Tamiya liquid.

The rear wheel and all accessories, including the superb drive belt, It was now time to line the inside metal brake disc, calliper arm and soft-tail shocks are ready for the of the tyre with foam. Once the foam pad was in place, the rim was second part of the assembly. inserted and the pad pressed into place.

p 30-39 Harley 227MN.indd 33

We must first prepare the threaded rod that holds the wheel by screwing a nut 1mm from the end and then fixing in place with a drop of cyano. The modeller must hold on tight to the rod while screwing on the nut, while taking care not to damage the threaded rod.

V I also had some problems

with the decals. As with the Honda NSR500 '84, they are very well printed, but are rather fragile and many are destined to be applied to chrome surfaces, but aren't adhesive enough to stick with any tenacity. I think I have a share of responsibility for the decal problems, having used a too-aggressive setting solution (Tamiya acrylic thinner) which crumpled the markings and left dark marks in places. The front tyre seemed upside down to me, with the 'V' facing upwards, so I mounted it the other way round. However, after consulting the Harley-Davidson website, my brother and my well-informed bike-modeller friends, it turns out that the 'V-up' configuration is correct, due to various forces on the front wheel (power braking) and rear (transfer of the engine torque). So, off came the front tyre and I re-fitted it in accordance with the instructions, but some photos were taken before this correction was made, immortalising my blunder in print.

HASTA LA VISTA, BABY

Please do not think that my remarks about the rims and decals devalue this great model. I would give it a score of 19.5/20 without problem. The assembly is accurate, the extensive use of screws allows the modeller to work quickly and cleanly and the highlighted black scheme doesn't diminish the aggressive lines of the bike at all; anyway, a Harley is made to be customised, so you can unleash your imagination if your heart tells you! I'm totally captivated by the wonderful technical prowess of Shizuoka City's scale model engineers in giving us a beautiful replica of this bike, a scale model landmark! â—?

Once the wheel is in place, it's time to install the bracket with beautiful cylindrical-headed screws, plus the belt guard. Belt and crown are great but the screws alongside the moulded crown bolts don't look so good.

The rear suspension is a very important element in the design of the motorcycle. It is so well integrated that it is invisible on the finished model.

For attachment to the frame, be sure to follow the order shown in the instructions (step 20). First, introduce the two threaded damper rods into their homes under the frame before fitting parts A3 and A4 which secure the two components to the engine block.

The clutch/gearbox housing is impressive and is divided into two parts, one in matt black and the other chrome, which are screwed in place one after the another.

A milestone moment; the preparation of the cylinder cooling-fins. To create well-defined edges, the sprue attachment points of each fin were snipped off with side-cutters then carefully trimmed with a scalpel. Files were used to level the surface and the edges were then rubbed carefully with fine sandpaper. There are many fins, so allow at least two evenings for the task!

34 September 2014 TMMI 227

p 30-39 Harley 227MN.indd 34

30/07/2014 16:32

The fins were assembled 'dry' and held together with a clamp. A generous layer of TS-14 Gloss Black was applied as an undercoat, in readiness to receive a thin layer of TS-83 Metallic Silver.

Each fin was sprayed matt black using Tamiya Acrylic XF-1 Flat Black and after a good night of drying, just the edges of the fins were gently rubbed with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to reveal the silver beneath. You can also use matt black enamel and white spirit for this process if prefer. Later, the fins were cemented together following the sequence of numbers embossed on the underside of each part.

The assembled cylinders were placed over on the four threaded rods with the aid of the slight 'play' which had been left for them. They are secured with bolts which must be tightened with spanner A or T.

The exhaust system is attached to the right side of the bike with double-sided tape on the engine and with large screws for silencers.

The metal silencers carry Serflex collars, provided as photo-etched parts. First, use the silencer as a template to shape the collar, without trying to attach it. Then, set the collar at its sixth hole before threading through and folding to prevent it from unravelling.

Exhaust shields are fixed in place with multiple small pieces of double-sided tape. They are applied first to the inside of shields to ensure none of the tape is on show when the shields are in place.

The exhaust system is complete, tidy and flawless.

The right footrest is combined with the rear brake pedal, which remains functional thanks to the inclusion of a little spring hidden inside the master cylinder, a lovely touch of typical Tamiya detail.

The air filter (right side) and horn (left side) were installed between the twin-V cylinders.

The number of parts constituting the front fork is impressive, even with some substructures already been assembled.

The front suspension system includes with two springs that allow, as in reality, very flexible, progressive damping. The large caps are screwed in with the largest spanner into the very thick plastic sleeve; there’s little risk of cracking, but go easy anyway...

The fork crown, with headlight housing and gloss black mount were fixed first, followed by the fork/mudguard assembly. No problems were encountered here.

With a piece of soft vinyl trapped inside each indicator stalk, the latter firmly but simply slides on the metal handlebar rod and can be oriented at will, without any risk. Mirrors and indicators are also adjustable at will and you can even remove them to minimize the risk of damage during transportation. Multiple registrations are offered in the kit but that of Wisconsin, Milwaukee where the Harley factory is located seemed most representative of the 'American Dream' embodied by this powerful machine.

If the crankcase is to be finished according to the instructions, the small black cover at the bottom should receive a decal on the chrome plating, but it didn't want to adhere. So, the cover simply received a coat of satin black. Similarly, the 'six speed' on the cover was highlighted by a thick black colour-wash rather than using a decal.

Last step of assembly; handlebars, fairing elements and upholstery. A little over a dozen turns of the screw were enough to put an end to this beautiful model project. Note that the front tyre is fitted in the opposite direction of what is suggested in the instructions. This was changed later.

The fuel tank logo was scheduled for a decal but it did not adhere well to the chrome. Thus, the recessed portions were filled with matt black then wiped with a cloth soaked in thinner, allowing the chrome relief to reappear.

The central part of the tank console was painted matt black, the only concession made to the authenticity of the machine.

Early on in the model's assembly, the engine was assembled off the bike just to see it on its own. You will notice the balance point on the support due to the heavy weight of the metal silencers. It would almost be worth buying a second kit just for this presentation!

ollowing hot on the heels of the Me109 G-6 released a year or so ago, Revell have taken the bold step of offering the streamlined G-10 ‘Erla’ to the enthusiastic modeller. Arguably the ultimate incarnation of this famous aircraft, this DB605D powered sub-variant featured streamlined cowlings, redesigned oil cooler and fairing, enlarged supercharger intake and new canopy featuring larger, unbroken panels. Combined, these upgrades created an aircraft that was lighter than the later K-4 making it the fastest of the 109 family and as such, a real hot-rod over the battlefields of Western Europe at the end of WWII.

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY AVIATION REVELL 1:32 MESSERSCHMITT BF109G-10 ERLA ● KIT NO.04888

IN MINIATURE V GUSTAV Revell’s 1:32 G-10 Erla is

offered as a standard plastic kit that combines a number of sprues from the earlier G-6, with new parts needed to create this later variant. As such, much of the kit will be familiar, but whereas the G-6 airframe was broken down into a number of smaller parts, this kit features full-length fuselage halves with only a separate upper cowling there to spoil the party. Detail and options are noteworthy across the board, the 175 parts offering a complete cockpit, multi-part undercarriage, choice of rudders (three in total), long and short tail wheels and two different styles of main wheel. Panel lines are delicate, stitched rudder panels intricate and the fit of the parts, precise. It is to all intents and purposes, just what you might expect from a kit released in 2014. That said there are issues. The propeller blades are a little off in profile; the spinner, though good in shape, is split awkwardly leading to difficulty when it comes to cleaning up the joint line; the oil cooler is misshapen; the supercharger intake features too sharp an opening, resulting in it appearing overly large; scoops around the nose are moulded solid, exhausts similarly so; and finally, the undercarriage legs are inexplicably moulded in two halves making them difficult to clean up and overly weak and the instrument panel decal in a negative, offering white dials with black markings, rather that black dials with white… Thankfully, those building this kit can now use a raft of aftermarket items to improve the list of compromises, Barracuda Studios offering direct replacements for the items listed, as well as upper wing panels with the smaller undercarriage bulges found on the majority of these aircraft in service. You can also find replacement seat straps (absolutely essentially given the awful moulded-on

The cockpit in the kit is well detailed, but we were looking for more so replaced it with an Aires cockpit set designed for the G-6 kit. As the differences between the earlier and later aircraft was small, the cockpit was used as-is. We also used the kit’s gunsight and instrument panel – mainly as an expedient measure, those oddly printed decals making an appearance! You notice that the yellow fuel gauge pipe is missing from the completed cockpit; this was to be fixed in place at the end of construction, but it simply would not fit – as a result, it was left out.

The Aires kit supplies a photo-etched fret that includes seat straps. In order to ensure strength whilst fitting them later on, the parts were soldered together before being polished with a glass-fibre pen. Should I build this model again I would source some of the fabric straps that are now available from the likes of Eduard, their appearance being far superior to these etched brass items.

U

Test fitting the new cockpit. Despite being designed for another kit, the fit was remarkably good once the large resin blocks had been removed. The kit’s rear wall would be used later on to fill the gap above the seat.

Rather than glue the walls in place, they were held against the ‘tub’ using this rather unsophisticated technique! The whole sub-assembly was the glued in place within the fuselage halves and then the halves joined together, filling and sanding being carried out before moving on to the wings.

The painted cockpit. Tamiya German Grey oversprayed with Neutral grey was used for the basic colours here, oil paint washes and drybrushed layers of Humbrol enamels being used to pop the details. Finer features were picked out with Vallejo acrylics applied with a 00 brush.

30/07/2014 16:36

Given the problems with the basic Revell kit (most of which are not insurmountable), we decided to use some new products from Barracuda Studios to improve the areas listed. Here, you can see the items we used, all of which are listed elsewhere and available from their website.

The new wing panels sit alongside the kit items to give you a good idea of the difference in size between the larger and later kit parts, and the early-pattern, Barracuda Studios’ resin insert. Casting of these replacement parts is first class, their finish matching perfectly the kit’s remaining wing panels.

In place on the completed model, the new panels look really good. In order to blend them in further, the upper wings were riveted with a Rivet-R fitted with a 1.25mm wheel.

With the basic construction complete, the smaller Berna Clamps are perfect for jobs such as this: hold the part in place, fix with the clamp and flow details could be added, beginning with the new some liquid glue along the joint. Job done! supercharger intake. Moulded in one piece, this new part is perfectly shaped, with an opening that matches the bulky look of the original, to a tee. Fit is almost perfect too, just a little Mr Surfacer being needed here and there.

Care needs to be taken when fixing the new resin parts in place, a certain amount of manipulation being needed to ensure that they match the curve of the Revell kit’s outer panels. A touch of Mr Surfacer dealt with a few small gaps that resulted from their union.

The airframe is almost complete only a little cleaning up being needed prior to the application of paint.

The small scoops on the nose are moulded solid in the kit and so were replaced with these new resin pieces. The area around the exhausts was then spayed with RLM76 Lichtblau, before fixing the pre-painted exhaust in place. This was done to cut down on the need to either mask off the exhausts before painting, or paint them once the camouflage had been applied.

The kit’s undernose oil cooler is too square in shape and so was once again replaced. Here the kit part and Barracuda’s replacement, sit side by side.

As with all of the resin items used during this build, the oil cooler was an almost perfect fit, only a drop of thin superglue and a touch of Mr Surfacer being needed to create a smooth finish.

The wheel wells are well-detailed, separate walls creating an almost picture-perfect result.

as well as a set of Eduard Brassin undercarriage legs. Moulded in brass, these wonderful pieces will not only offer far more detail, they will provide a much more stable base on which the model can sit (frankly, I’m not holding out much hope that the kit’s legs are going to last more than a few weeks!). Over the next few pages or so we will build this new kit, showing how these updates can be utilised to create a more accurate model. Along with the resin updates from Barracuda, we have also used an Aires cockpit and a set of aftermarket decals – again from Barracuda, these being appropriate to the earlier variant being modelled. Given the options possible, we would suggest choosing an aircraft and then list the necessary features required, rudder, tailwheel, wing bulges etc., to model it – either straight from the box, or using aftermarket products that you see fit, using either the kit decals or a whole host of other options from the likes of Barracuda or Eaglecals, both of whom have created decals specifically for the G-10 Erla. ●

Initially, I planned to paint the model and canopies separately, so masked off the cockpit opening with Tamiya masking tape…

…But changed my mind, deciding instead to fix the windscreen to the model and paint in place. The model was now ready to be painted.

Though I don’t use the technique often these days, the model was pre-shaded with Tamiya NATO Black ready for the camouflage. This was applied less as a way of defining the panels and more a way of regulating the tone of the overlaying camouflage colours.

The first colour to follow the pre-shading was the RLM76 Lichtblau (H417). This was applied in very thin layers, the paint being thinned with around 60% thinners, each layer being sprayed on with the airbrush using long, even passes.

The camouflage is completed with the application of the third colour, RLM74 Graugrun (H68). Once applied, the model was checked and the edges of the colours reworked until I was satisfied with the demarcations and tonal shifts.

The undersides were similarly treated with a layer of NATO black, heavily thinned with Mr Color Thinner.

Following the old adage that you should work from light to dark, the next colour to be applied was the RLM75 Grauviolett (H69), once again heavily thinning the paint and applying it in carefully glazed coats.

The mottling was very carefully applied in order to create spots that exhibited no evidence of overspray or splattering, both of which can be caused by either using paint that is not dilute enough, or air pressure that is too low.

I chose to model ‘Yellow 6’ from JGr.300, Neubiberg, Germany, June 1945. On this aircraft the previous number had been overpainted and so this patch needed to be added, here, using RLM74 darkened with a little Tamiya NATO Black. The model could now be prepared for decalling with several layers of Tamiya X-22 Clear, left to dry overnight to fully set.

The model was weathered with oil paint washes and oversprays of very dilute Tamiya Red Brown darkened with Flat Black. This is a fun step as it is here that the model really begins top come to life. Note the heavy exhaust staining.

The decals worked beautifully! All of the markings were taken from the Barracuda sheet, each individual marking being applied with the help of Microscale’s Micro Sol and Set. Once in place the model was sprayed with several layers of Vallejo Flat Varnish to seal everything in and produce and even finish.

Extensive use of oils and enamels thinned with white spirit were used to recreate the oily, stained, finish under the fuselage of the model.

Mini Review... REVELL 1:72 WALTER ROSE/ VERENA RESCUE BOAT kit no.05214 revell.de/en

The Walter Rose is a small lifeboat operated by the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DgzRS) and this all-new kit does an excellent job of replicating its compact outline in 1:72. Detail is lovely and comes with a mast for radar and other antennae. Decals are provided for both Walter Rose and Verena.

he Tornado remains a key element of the RAF’s inventory after having survived the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review, although it will be gradually replaced by the Typhoon and then, the F-35 Lightning II. The aircraft has done stirling service over the years, excelling itself in operations Granby and Telic (Gulf wars), Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Libya. A new kit of this significant machine was long overdue and Revell have duly obliged with a rather magnificent 1:48 production that comes with a heap of underwing stores and detail inside and out. Important inclusions are the internal engine intake

An all new kit of the Tornado is a very welcome thing, but what’s in the box? ducts and engine exhausts which add to the model’s complexity/authenticity and the reverse thrusters can be fitted in the open or closed position, all attractive features. The replication in miniature of the Tornado’s complex flaps and slats have been attempted in the past with limited success; surgery and resin parts were needed. In Revell’s new kit, we have a comprehensively detailed depiction of the system which has the potential to look very impressive on the finished model. A generous weapons fit is included in the box, with a jamming pod, AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles, FLIR & LRMTS and BOZ pods are all included, leaning more towards the

European/German ordnance load rather than RAF. The cockpit is fitted with a pair of decent Martin Baker Mk.10 ejector seats but these are liable to be upgraded with the inevitable resin items, modellers being modellers. At an approximate price of £23, the kit is very competitively priced; it’ll be hard to beat this for value. All we need now is a set of RAF decals! ● MN

The seat pads come with straps moulded in, which some won’t like.

Revell have moulded some parts with a great deal of finesse.

IM, WS Availability: Good model shops everywhere www.revell.de/en TMMI’S OPINION? Great to see an all-new 1:48 kit of this famous European jet. From this initial look at the sprues, Revell have done an excellent job it just remains to get it built up for the real test of quality.

Canopy parts are reasonably clear but could use a little polish.

Forward cockpit section is moulded in a modular style.

Cockpit consoles and instrument panels are well detailed. Intake ducts are provided in full.

ARENA MODELLI, ITALY PORSCHE 911 SC GR.4 www.grandprixmodels.com SCALE; 1:24 MATERIALS: R, DCM, MM, PE, VF, WS KIT NUMBER; ARE 701-24 Italian resin car kit specialists Arena Modelli have chosen a classic, early’80s Porsche 911 for their latest creation, specifically the Almeras/ Eminence sponsored machine from the 1981 San Remo Rally. The majority of the kit is cast in pale yellow resin, with lathe-turned aluminium wheel rims and two photo-etched frets carrying split-rim detail, window frames, brake discs, body clips, foot pedals, wipers and other body trim items. The roll cage is cast in white metal, along with the door handles and rear view mirror. A flat sheet of clear acetate is provided for the car’s glazing. A detailed engine is included, but the modeller must source their own cabling and other plumbing for it, which is no big deal. The casting quality is very good, with just the usual trimming of waste resin and films of flash being required. There appeared to be no air bubbles or other hard-to-remedy flaws in any of the many resin cast parts. Detail throughout is of a high standard and the body’s outline looks spot-on for this period of Porsche design. The key to success with these types of kits is in the finishing; the window edges, trim, wipers etc., must be very neat and experience with multi-media kits will help a lot. The most daunting part is the flat sheet provided for the windscreens and side windows; great care will be needed for a tidy result! MN

PLUS MODEL, CZECH REPUBLIC

EC-121 WARNING STAR www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE; 1:72 MATERIALS; IM, PE, R, WS KIT NUMBER; AL7010 This kit came slightly out of the blue for us, as it’s quite a departure for Plus Model whose usual fare is kits of staff cars, small trucks and resin diorama items. Here, we have a full kit of the US Navy and Air Force early warning radar aircraft, based on the Lockheed Super Constellation and known as ‘Warning Star’. It was used from the mid 1950s to the end of the 1970s, served during the Vietnam War and also as an element of the Apollo Space Program. Plus Model’s kit uses the injection-moulded plastic parts from Heller’s kit and adds a set of new engine cowlings and other small parts in resin and PE. The kit parts are impressive in size, particularly the vast radar pods, but the airframe has raised panel lines which are a little outdated. However, these could be re-scribed for a more realistic effect without too much trouble. Plus Model have also created separately available detail sets for this kit, including wheel bays, flaps and tail surfaces. MN

Fabulous classic Porsche, excellent detail, consistent, air-bubble free castings, finely printed decals

Fantastic subject, nice resin additions and new decals

Skills with multi-media kits will be necessary, particularly when it comes to the glazings

Plastic parts might need a little work to update, but are good quality

GERMAN 7.62CM PAK(R) NORTH AFRICA SCENERY SET www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; 32408 Tamiya, whilst best known for a vast range of original kits and accessories, do release the products of other manufacturers in a Tamiya-branded kit boxes from time to time, carefully selected for quality, of course. This fact is always clearly labelled on the box so the purchaser can be in no doubt as to what they are buying. In this release, Tamiya have chosen the excellent 1:35 Pak36(r) from Ukrainian maker ‘ICM’ plus the set of DAK crew figures that go with it, throwing in a set of moulded sandbags, a neat display base and a sheet of sand-textured groundwork too, creating a very appealing ‘all in one box’ mini diorama set. ICM’s injection-moulded parts are sharply detailed and quite close in overall quality to Tamiya, which is impressive. The figures, too, are very well done with natural poses and proportions, and good detail. The moulded base plate and sand-textured make the perfect finishing touch. MN

BRITISH PARATROOPERS W/SMALL MOTORCYCLE www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE KIT NUMBER; 35337 The interest in WW2 British airborne troops (the Paras) continues unabated, and we are very happy about this! Tamiya’s latest contribution to the subject is this delightful set of four figures of the 6th Airborne Division (we assume), plus a pair of ‘small motorcycles’ better known as ‘Welbikes’. The figures based on two individuals, one standing and one riding, with a choice of arms to vary their poses and they are extremely well done, the only thing missing being the mesh helmet coverings which became such a distinctive part of their appearance. The hands, so often shapeless blobs in model figure sets, are beautifully done, with individual fingers and palm detail, superb. The Welbikes are lovely too; they come with photo-etched metal wheel spokes and drive chains for scale realism. To complete this fantastic package, we are treated to two sets of Tamiya’s 1:35 British infantry weapons and equipment sprues. MN

ICM’s moulded gun and crew figures are well worthy of their renaissance in a Tamiya kit box and the base/sand sheet are welcome additions

Wonderfully original, very finely detailed and the perfect subject choice. Brilliant stuff and good timing for the 70th anniversary of Operation Market Garden

Nothing negative here, it’s a well thought-out package

The modeller might wish to add the mesh camouflage netting to some of the figures’ helmets TMMI 227 September 2014

REVELL, EUROPE

LAFERRARI www.revell.de/en SCALE; 1:24 MATERIALS; IM, NM, WS KIT NUMBER; 07073 We reviewed Tamiya’s 1:24 LaFerrari back in Issue 224 (June 2014) and now that Revell have issued their kit of this hyper-car in the same scale, it’s interesting to see how the two companies took different approaches to the same subject. Where Tamiya’s model included parts to recreate significant portions of the internal structure, Revell have chosen to simplify this area by providing a more conventional layout of chassis panel, bodyshell and cockpit-tub with door liners. This approach might appeal to some who wish to build their model a little more speedily. Revell include a detailed replica of the car’s engine and gearbox but the hybrid energy battery packs are not featured, again simplifying assembly. The wheels are Revell’s unconventional two-part affairs but once painted and assembled, will look just fine. Tyres are excellent and feature good tread and sidewall detail. MN

KITTY HAWK, CHINA

F-101 A/C VOODOO www.hannants.co.uk SCALE; 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; KH80115 The McDonnell F-101 Voodoo was a USAF fighter that served for just under ten years from 1957 to 1966. Kitty Hawk have issued this all new kit as a possible replacement for Monogram’s ageing but still sound kit and in many ways it excels in this, with recessed panel lines bordered with fine rivets and nicely detailed undercarriage, but the cockpit uses decals for the instrument panel and side consoles which is a little out of date (PE panels are included too but are not a big improvement over the decals), and there are some hefty sink marks on the outer faces of the airbrakes. The fuselage breakdown is curious too, which might lead to some awkward seams if the fit isn’t right. But the model has lots of potential and the result will be a large, spectacular model of a Cold War classic. MN

Revell’s kit is an excellent replica of this extraordinary car and the kit is about half the price of Tamiya’s release

Fine surface detail, impressive decal sheet, decent underwing storage

Tamiya’s kit is more extensively detailed but Revell’s strikes a good balance between cost and complexity

Some sink marks and flat cockpit panel detail

FINE MOLDS, JAPAN

JGSDF TYPE 60 APC www.finemolds.co.jp SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, WC, WS KIT NUMBER; FM40 The Type 60 APC may resemble the US M113 but it’s a completely different machine, homegrown in the late 1950s for the Japan Ground Self Defence Force, who used it from the 1960s onwards. Fine Molds’ kit is a highly detailed production that features a panel-by-panel hull breakdown and a very thorough treatment of the suspension and running gear. The tracks are provided in the link and length style and come with the ‘sag’ moulded neatly into the upper runs, with individual links to form around the sprockets and idlers. The kit comes with many small parts to form the external structures such as lights, tools, hatches, handles, tie-downs and other fittings. Detail is of the familiar Fine Molds standard; extremely refined and precise! MN

BRONCO, HONG KONG

PZ.KPFW.35(T) www.hannants.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; CB35065 The Pz35(t) was a Czech-built tank that was taken over in significant numbers by the German army after the conquest of the country. Bronco’s kit is an all new model from the tracks up and its an extraordinarily detailed production that features a very comprehensive crew fighting/ compartment from the firewall forwards, and upwards into the turret. The suspension system is equally well detailed and, if cement is applied with care, will remain articulated after assembly. The tracks are individual link in style and once trimmed from the strips of sprue, are designed to snap together. The photo-etched brass fret provides tool clamps, rivet strips, centre-seams for the jerrycans and many more small components. Decals include four German machines (panzergrau) and two Czech Army tanks (three-colour camouflage). This is a very finely detailed model that will require time and care to assemble but has the potential to look great. MN

Very detailed, refined mouldings and excellent, pre-sagged link/length tracks

Lots of detail inside and out, indi-link tracks, full fighting compartment

No figure is included, but this is a minor quibble

DUEL IN THE MIST 3, THE LEIBSTANDARTE DURING THE ARDENNES OFFENSIVE

TIMM HAASLER, SIMON VOSTERS, HANS WEBER www.panzerwrecks.com The 'Duel in the Mist' series is on its third volume now and also its second publisher, Panzerwrecks, who are well known for their comprehensive series of very modeller-friendly titles on destroyed and abandoned tanks of the Second World War. 'Duel In The Mist' is a far more focused in its subject; the Battle of the Bulge and specifically the Kampfgruppe Peiper's role in the campaign is scrutinised with near-forensic levels of analysis. In this third tome, the authors look at the later operations of the Kampfgruppe, when the unit was trapped in the area of La Gleize, Stoumont and Cheneux. By re-examining photographs and using first-hand testimony, they attempt to offer the reader the clearest possible view of the events that took place during the winter of 1944, in the brutally cold forests of the Ardennes. As well as providing an engaging read, the book offers the modeller plenty of ideas and inspiration for their model projects, and dioramas in particular, via the use of large, clear wartime photographs; Panthers and Tiger IIs are, of course, the main subjects. A very detailed, blowby-blow account and another excellent resource for the study of the Battle of the Bulge and well worth adding to your reference library. MICHAEL MASS, ADAM O'BRIEN, DESERT EAGLE PUBLISHING www.aviationbookcentre.com ISBN 978-965-91635-5-7 The US-made M113A1/A2 armoured personal carrier is an iconic AFV of the Vietnam War but it was and still is widely used by the Israeli Defence Force and they have created a whole range of versions, based on the standard aluminium hull of the US vehicle, which is well over half a century old. In this new, 82+ page softback book from Desert Eagle Publishing from Israeli, we are presented with a visual feast of images showing the M113 Zelda – volume one deals with the 'Fitter' maintenance vehicle – providing the modeller with an amazing array of references for modelling projects. As the vehicles are photographed on location in Israel, which is naturally sunny, the photos are superbly well lit which does wonders for highlighting the intrinsic details of the APC. Markings, equipment fit, paint colours and weathering are all clearly depicted, accompanied by useful and wellinformed captions. MN

NUTS & BOLTS VOLUME 32; MITTLERE GELANDEGANGIGE LASTKRAFTWAGEN (0), THE MEDIUM CROSS-COUNTRY LORRIES 2 TON (6X4) OF THE REICHSWEHR AND WEHRMACHT

HOLGER ERDMANN www.nuts-bolts.de The latest volume in the irreplaceable Nuts and Bolts series (now at number thirty-two!) takes an amazingly detailed look at the medium (three-ton) off-road trucks of the Reichswehr, Germany's military organisation from 1919 to 1935, prior to the formation of the Wehrmacht. In Nuts and Bolts' inimitable style, we are treated to an authoritative volume of the subject, using hundreds of original photos (wow, those guys really liked to use their cameras to shoot their chums and hardware back in those days) showing the wide variety of variants of the truck type in use in pre-war Germany. The initial 129 pages are devoted to these variants, and that's a lot of wonderfully evocative and detailed photographs. Following this, we have a generous section of 1:35 drawings, colour profile illustrations (when applied, the camouflage patterns were surprisingly colourful) and then we are treated to museum walk-arounds and modelling section showing Tony Greenland's build-up of ICM's 1:35 Krupp L3H163 Kfz.72 kit. Another fantastically thorough production of 224+ pages and a must-have if you're a dedicated model superdetailer. MN

PANZERWRECKS 16, BULGE

LEE ARCHER, WILLIAM AUERBACH, PANZERWRECKS www.panzerwrecks.com ISBN; 978-1-908032-08-9 Volume sixteen in this staple of the armour modeller's reference collection covers the 1944 Ardennes offensive, best known as the 'Battle of the Bulge'. It's the second book on this campaign reviewed this month from this publisher, proving its popularity with modellers, but where Duel In The Mist looks at a specific unit's tactics and movements, Panzerwrecks 16 takes a more generalised, but no less detailed examination of the tanks and vehicles that were used during 'Wacht Am Rhein' (watch on the Rhein, the German codename for the winter offensive). Between the glossy, soft covers we are treated to 100 pages of high quality wartime photographs, many reproduced across the whole page so we can examine the subjects in detail, and there sure is a lot of detail to be seen here. Vehicles depicted include the Tiger I, Wirbelwind, Panzer IV, StuG IV, StuG III, M10 Panther, Beute-Sherman, Beute-Greyhound, Beute-M3 halftrack, RSO, Tiger II, Panther, Jagdpanther IV, sWS, Sd.Kfz.251, Sd.Kfz.233, Hummel, Jagdpanther and more. And all are wrecked, naturally. Unmissable material for modelling inspiration. MN

It’s great for modellers because each car is shown in multiple views with a shot into the cabin too, in most cases. ROBIN J BROOKS, AFTER THE BATTLE www.afterthebattle.com ISBN; 1-870067-82-7 Back in TMMI Issue No.223 we took a look at After The Battle's fascinating volume 'The Great War From The Air' which examined WW1 battlefields via the visually compelling combination of early aerial photography and modern satellite imagery. In this new tome, ATB's focus is on the airfields of the Royal Air Force's WW2 Fighter Command, ranging from No.9 Group to No.14 Group, again, covered from the air and also in depth from the ground too. The book is one of the publisher's hefty, hard-backed productions of 360+ pages and a phenomenal amount of detail is presented, in fact the sheer quantity of work involved in producing a book of this depth and comprehensiveness is quite simply, staggering. All of the stations that comprised Fighter Command are included, from No.14 Group in Scotland to No.10 Group in the south west of England, along with Royal Air Force Fighter Command Headquarters at Bentley Priory in Stanmore, in north west London – which is now a rather excellent museum dedicated to the RAF and the Battle of Britain in particular – and to use a cliché, once you start reading, the book is hard to put down. The author takes each station in turn and provides a suite of photographs, showing, where possible, the aerodrome from the air as it looks now (via Google Earth imagery used under license) and also from RAF contemporary aerial photos (now declassified) and even more interestingly, wartime Luftwaffe aerial photographs. Ground-level photography shows the aerodrome buildings, aircraft dispersal areas, revetments, blast pens, control towers and other structures. The combination of these unique photos with informative text and captions is extremely compelling and, if like me, you have a fascination for military archeology and British wartime history in particular, After The Battle's latest production will keep you completely engrossed. The Editor’s Page... RESIN WHEEL SETS WITH BUILT-IN WEIGHTED APPEARANCE

TO SAG, OR NOT SAG? The tyres of any vehicle or aircraft – whether pneumatic or even solid rubber – will bulge or at least have flat spots where they contact the ground to a greater or lesser degree, it’s simple physics. The extent to which the bulge is visible depends on a range of factors; the weight the tyres are supporting, their inflation pressure, the terrain they are sitting on and other influences. I think it’s vital to depict this phenomenon on a model, to me it’s as important as track sag on a tank as a way of suggesting the effects of gravity on heavy hardware. Most model kits of subjects fitted with tyres provide them in fully-rounded form, as though the tyre was lifted off the ground. This is, of course, unavoidable when the tyres are moulded in a flexible vinyl material as you might get in a 1:24 car kit, but on a military or aircraft subject where the tyres are usually formed from the regular (rigid) kit plastic, it is possible to add a weighted appearance and with increasing frequency, some model manufacturers are incorporating this feature as standard. Where the feature isn’t included, I think it’s important to add it yourself, or if this isn’t practical or easy, find an aftermarket producer who do it for you. DEF Model of Korea have been producing some fabulous resin wheel and tyre sets for several years that do just this; weighted tyres with sidewall bulges for a completely convincing effect. And they aren’t just recasts of modified kit parts, they use newly tooled masters, often with additional detail such as tyre-wall data and enhanced wheel hubs, making their purchase very worthwhile. Here, we can see Tamiya’s 1:35 Gama Goat (expertly built by Spencer Pollard) with the standard wheels/ tyres and the DEF Model replacement resin set (DW35061) alongisde; the difference is clear to see. More new DEF Model wheel/tyre sets will be reviewed next issue. www.defmodel.com www.luckymodel.com

Out of the box, the kit wheels look fine, but there’s no weighted appearance, or sidewall logos. (Gama Goat, TMMI 218, December 2013).

DEF Model’s resin set (DW35061) provides a very realistic bulge which creates a convincing feeling of weight. Note the ring of bolts deep inside the hub, a feature absent from the standard wheels. The set includes pre-cut masks.

See you again on September 18th! editor@tamiyamodelmagazine.com

D-DAY LEGEND ITALERI 1/72 SHORT STIRLING MK.IV D DAY GLIDER TUG - #1350

The Short Stirling was the first four-engined British heavy bomber of the Second World War. The Stirling was designed and built by Short Brothers to an Air Ministry specification from 1936, and entered service in 1941. The Stirling had a relatively brief operational career as a bomber, being relegated to second line duties from 1943 onwards when other four-engined RAF bombers, specifically the Handley Page Halifax and Avro Lancaster, took over its role, but fulfilled a major role as a glider tug and resupply aircraft during the allied invasion of Europe in 1944-1945. The Italeri 1/72 Short Stirling Mk.IV D Day Glider Tug from the aircraft model kit range accurately recreates the real life British bomber used to tow the gliders on D Day.
