REVELL, EUROPE 1:72 DHC-6 TWIN OTTER SWISSTOPO ITEM NO.03954 • www.revell/de/en An oldish kit that will need some careful parts clean-up but a very attractive subject and in the Swiss Federal Office of Topography colours, it looks very appealing indeed

REVELL, EUROPE 1:48 SPITFIRE MK.II ITEM NO.03959 • www.revell/de/en This re-release uses sprues from a few decades back (raised panel lines) but at less than £10 it might make a good gift for a beginner or someone on a very tight budget

REVELL, EUROPE 1:24 PORSCHE BOXSTER ITEM NO.07690 • www.revell/de/en Revell’s Boxster features a rationalised parts breakdown (wipers moulded in with the bodyshell) but with some skill could be painted up to look quite slick in orange with black wheels

SHOW REPORT

NUREMBERG TOY FAIR 2016

TMMI's Editor makes his annual trip to Nuremberg in Bavaria, Germany for the giant toy fair

NUREMBERG TOY FAIR 2016 B

ack in January, as the jam-packed Ryanair flight whisked me into the turbulent air over Essex, south-east England, I mulled over what new kits might greet me upon arrival at Nuremberg's vast Messe exhibition centre. When I first started going to this annual toy fair in the early 1990s, the internet was barely available to consumers, so the first time I would see the new kits would be when I walked onto the model companies' stands. That has changed completely now, with the new items appearing online – in one form or another – days and even weeks before the show opens. However, not everything makes it to the 'web beforehand, and it is these smaller but equally fascinating releases I seek out; this is especially so at the Shizuoka Hobby Show where small Japanese manufacturers show off their new items. I love it when I find these smaller but fun releases, so it really is worth visiting the Nuremberg Toy Fair so these little gems can

8

be sought out. This year I have dedicated twelve pages to the event, which I hope you don't find excessive! There are just a lot of new releases to cover. Tamiya showed off the new 1:24 Ferrari FXX K (which uses a sprue from the LaFerrari kit), 1:12 Repsol Honda RC213V '14 (previewed in TMMI last month), 1:35 AMX-13 French tank, SU-76M Soviet anti-tank, Bundeswehr M-109G SPH and 1:48 British 7-ton (Humber) armoured car. There were no new aircraft kits on show but something new is to be announced in May at the Shizuoka Hobby Show. Airfix showed off a prototype model of their forthcoming 1:24 Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB 'Car Door' version, as well as some new aircraft kits including the 1:72 Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress, Hunting Percival Jet Provost T3, Sea King HC.4, Beaufighter Mk.X (late), Fokker E.II Eindecker, RAF BE.2c, Spitfire Mk.Va, Grumman Martlet Mk.IV, Armstrong Whitworth

Whitely Mk.VII, 1:48 Boulton-Paul Defiant Mk.I, Hawker Hurricane Mk.I tropical, Ju87B-1 Stuka, Curtiss P-48B, Gloster Meteor F.8 and more. Revell announced their new-tool kits of the 1:32 Messerschmitt Me262B-1 Nightfighter, F/A-18 Super Hornet, 1:144 HMS Snowberry Flower-Class Corvette, 1:24 McLaren 570S, Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, 1:72 T-55A, Spitfire Mk.IIa and a host of new Star Wars kits. The big news for Star Wars fans is that Revell have acquired the moulds for the 1:72 Millennium Falcon, TIE Fighter and X-Wing Fighter by Fine Molds, so these fantastic models will be available once again. In 1:16 we have an all-new BMW Isetta bubble-car and also in large scale, the Corvette Stingray Limited Edition in huge 1:8. Italeri showed off a built-up example of the new 1:32 Mirage IIIC and showed artwork for the new 1:32 Mirage III E/R and F-35A Lightning II. Takom were present in their own right

for the first time, along with AMMO (Mig Productions) and they presented their 1:35 M9 dozer, three new AMX13 kits, two new T-55 tanks, a Chieftain Mk.2, Chieftain Marksman SPAAG and the wonderfully named Big Bertha WW1 howitzer. TMMI was particularly pleased to see Charlie Pritchett working with the Takom guys. He's an immensely talented modeller and his skills bring an exceptional asset to the company; we wish Charlie the best of luck. Trumpeter were at the Toy Fair of course, and they showed off the kit 1:16 Jagdtiger kit plus 1:25 T-72B, Soviet 100mm KS-19M2 AA gun, KV-220 super-heavy tank, Soviet MTLB APC, Soviet 'Terminator' (the third kit of this machine in 1:35, from three different manufacturers), Soviet 2P19 SCUD launcher, M901 Patriot SAM launcher and two 1:35 kits of ISO containers; twenty and forty foot. Kinetic had a surprise

April 2016 TMMI 246

01/03/2016 20:06

for us in the form of a new-tool 1:48 kit of the F/A-18C Hornet and from their built-up test shot (damaged during transit unfortunately) and sprues, it looked absolutely superb. Kinetic have utilised advanced moulding technology for this kit and it really showed in the parts; some extremely subtle surface detail and sophisticated partsbreakdown. MiniArt revealed their new 1:35 kits of the Soviet T-44 and T-55M tanks, both of which come with extensive interior and engine detail. Also on the way from this maker are 1:35 kits of the SU-122 (initial production), SU-85 Mod.1942 (mid-production), both with full interior detail. MRC's hotly anticipated twenty-two inch kit of the Space 1999 Eagle Transporter was shown off and even in its raw white plastic it looked spectacular; a fantastic target for weathering. Plus Model had a handful of new resin goodies on show, including the conventionally-wheeled version of the wonderful Pavesi P-4 tractor in 1:35, plus the Multicar M-22 airfield truck in 1:48, US pressure bottles (1:35), US Electric cart C4-32 Mule (1:48) and an announced 1:35 kit of the amazing WW1 Austrian Generatorwagen with trailer. This machine featured an electric-motor powered trailer with electricity being created by the tractor unit. The wheels of this leviathan were on show and they looked wonderful. Scale Motorsport showed off their new wheel sets which use 3D printed parts for the cast centres plus machined aluminium rims. They will look great once primed and painted. Belkits revealed built-up examples of their new 1:24 Ford Escort RS1600 kit and it looked spot-on. They also announced their next 1:24 car kit, the Opel Manta 400 Gr.B 1984. There were many other new items of course, some of which are shown here but not all by any means. So, I hope you enjoy the highlights of this year's event. Apologies in advance for any omissions! â—?

ARMOUR OF THE

BLACK DEVILS TMMI's Editor builds Tamiya's new 1:48 '7 Ton Armored Car Mk.IV' and adds a few small extra details

T

amiya's 1:48 armour range includes some appealing British vehicles in the line-up, from the Crusader Mk.III, Matilda Mk.III/IV, 'Tilly' truck and Dingo Mk.III armoured car. Now, joining the line-up is an all new kit of the 'British 7-ton Armored Car Mk.IV', perhaps better known as the Humber Mk.IV. Just one set of markings is provided, for a vehicle of the Polish 1st Armoured Division – the 'Black Devils' – in overall olive drab, or more specifically the British version of this ubiquitous Allied colour known as Olive Drab No.15.

QUICK BUILD

The kit is designed to be quick and straightforward to build, keeping the underside (chassis) to a single moulding that incorporates the chassis rails, crossmembers, leaf springs and engine sump. To this, the transfer case with its integrally-moulded prop shafts is cemented, then the live axles with steering rod are fixed in place. It's important to note that the steering is moulded in the 'straightahead' position, so if you want to depict the front wheels at a slight angle (which I always think adds a significant amount of 'life' to a vehicle) you'll need to either undertake some polystyrene surgery, or just bend the stub-axles with modelling pliers. I managed to snap one off in doing this, so be very careful.

Upper hull and lower chassis plate, joined before the hull sides are added

The single moulding for the lower hull/chassis carries basic detailing, but actually looks good once painted/weathered

A quick test-fitting showed that the two parts fitted perfectly

The contact points of the three struts were lightly sanded to ensure that they were perfectly flat

Mr Hobby Mr Cement Deluxe was used for the bond; it evaporates slower than the Mr Cement S and thus give more time to bring the two mouldings together

The hull sides are ready to mount. As noted in the instructions, there should be a slight lip where the sides meet the upper hull part; do not sand this flush!

joints V Hull The upper hull joins to the chassis panel by three internal

struts and as you'll be manipulating the hull during the following steps, it's wise to let the cemented joints set before proceeding here. The hull's side panels are next up and here it's very important to take note of the small inset sketch on the instruction sheet. This tells the builder that there should be a small amount of protrusion of the side hull plates where they meet the upper plates. Very careful application of liquid cement will ensure this feature is preserved and kept sharp.

Small extra detailing

Even though the fit of parts is as good as it gets, I like to make sure my cemented joints are completely sealed,

so I painted some thinned Mr Surfacer 500 along joints where needed. My original intention was to build this kit completely stock, with no detail additions. But with a few references to hand, I saw where, with some simple plastic card and strip, I could enhance the detail with minimal effort. Missing from the kit are the narrow guard strips around each hull-side door, so these were created with narrow plastic card. The lifting eyes were replaced with loops of copper wire (seen in red in the in-progress photographs) and I also remade the two catches on the bow plate with offcuts of PE fret and aluminium tube. Inevitably, the standard mouldings for the rear-view mirror stalks are a little too thick for this small scale, so I replaced them with lengths of fine aluminium tubing (Albion

Alloys) and new mirrors from plastic card. The teardropshaped convoy lights on the front wings were also remade from plastic rod, spun in my mini-drill chuck whilst being sanded to shape with sandpaper. On each turret side there is raised circular panel (pistol port?) with three off-centre 'bumps'. On the turret moulding, these features are a little indistinct, so I scraped them off and replaced them with polystyrene discs made with my punch and die set, with the bumps made by punching the back end of a micro-drill through lead foil over a sheet of printer's rubber. This creates tiny metal discs than are great for fine detailing work; they are attached to the model with cyanoacrylate glue.

I cemented representations of padlocks – made from plastic strip – to the stowage bins and also added the missing strips of framework to the 'flimsy' fuel can brackets, front and rear. While I was doing this, I made the upper locking arms for the brackets too, using more plastic strip. These looked delicate but somehow they survived the painting and weathering stages. A few more small detail enhancements were made (surface-mounted handles and catches on the engine access hatch, thinning out the edges of the smoke dischargers, cables to the lights) and then I drilled/filed out the lens moulding of the turret spotlight. The resulting (and very delicate) ring was later repositioned over a clear resin

U

Weapon and infantry accessories are always welcome and this new set from ICM is particularly well done. In the box you’ll find helmets, entrenching tools, daggers, water bottles, gas mask cases and more, plus a couple each of the KAR98, MG34 and MP40, plus associated ammo pouches

from modellingtools.co.uk) to give this very prominent part of the model a special touch of realism.

Flat spots

The wheels/tyres are moulded in hard kit plastic thank goodness, but they are perfectly round with no flat-spots to suggest the weight of the vehicle. Imparting this effect on a four-wheeled vehicle is actually rather tricky, as the amount of plastic that is sliced/sanded off from each tyre has to be exactly the same on each tyre or the model will teeter on three wheels. I very nearly achieved this, but there's still a tiny amount of wobble!

The missing guard strips were added around the hull doors, although when the spare wheel is in place, it almost completely hides the righthand side door anyway!

Paint and weathering

Painting a small AFV model in a single colour can result in a rather dull appearance, so I chose to go 'old school' and use airbrushed shading and highlights to breathe a little life into the overall olive drab. Various Tamiya Acrylics colours were used, starting with XF-62 Olive Drab, lightened with XF-15 Flat Flesh. This mixture was further lightened to create the paler shades for the upper surfaces of the hull and turret. Oil paint colour-washes followed and once fully dry, a layer of Future acrylic polish was applied (Tamiya X-22 Clear can also be used here) in readiness for the decals. As mentioned previously, just one option is provided. The markings were applied with the use of Daco setting solution and once fully set (overnight) a layer of matt varnish was airbrushed on to restore the military finish. The tyres were hand-painted using a mixture Vallejo acrylics to create a dark grey; I was all out of their excellent 'Dark Rubber' shade which I usually use for this. Dust-coloured pigments were mixed with white spirit to create a slurry which was then painted onto the tyres and once dry, the excess was rubbed off to reveal the tyre treads and sidewalls. The same mixture was applied to the undersurfaces and rear of the model which provides a visual balance for the dark green of the upper surfaces.

The drivetrain consists of two live axles, transfer case and prop shafts and steering tie-rod

To impart a degree or two of steering, the author simply bent the stub axles with modelling pliers. Far from an ideal solution and one broke off later on in construction...

In an attempt to represent the weld beads where the hull plates meet, the author rolled a fine file along the edges. Ultimately, this was barely visible on the finished model!

The turret sides feature circular protrusions, maybe pistol ports? They were replaced by plastic discs to create better definition

Views of the assembled model revealing the additional details added by the author

No stowage comes with the kit, but wartime photos show these vehicles festooned with boxes, bedrolls, tarpaulins and most notably, bundles of rope. Woven cord tends to look over-scale in 1:48, so I used lead wire for my rope. Before forming it to shape, I rolled a rat-tailed file over the wire which imparted a subtle twist pattern, just visible in the photographs of the finished model. For the rolls, I rummaged through my spare parts box and found some Verlinden Productions' 1:48 items that fitted the bill perfectly. The finishing touch was to paint up and install the nicely sculpted commander figure and create a stretched-sprue aerial. This was a very easy model to build and the small detail additions were a pleasure, not a chore, to add. If makes an excellent addition to the 1:48 Military Miniatures Series; let's hope we see more armoured cars being added in the near future. l

The catches on the bow plate and the new rear-view mirrors and mounts can be observed here

KIT PREVIEW TANMODEL 1:48 REPUBLIC RF-84F THUNDERFLASH ● KIT NO.2201

A mousemat-style display base is included

Tanmodel have included some very attractive detail touches in their new 1:48 RF-84F Thunderflash

A TURKISH DELIGHT! T

urkish manufacturer Tanmodel recently released their 1:48 kit of the sleek Thunderflash with a large sheet of decals for the air forces of various nations, instantly making it a rather tempting prospect for fans of post-war jet fighters. The marking options include schemes for Turkish (naturally), USAFE, US National Guard, Italian, German, Netherlands, Greek and French air forces meaning there are some attractive camouflage schemes on offer, as well as classic overall natural metal. So, as we’re off to a good start already, let’s take a look at the plastic parts of the model. The first thing that strikes you is the size; the Thunderflash in 1:48 is quite large, accentuated by the slightly bulkier nose of this reconnaissance variant, with clear-moulded camera windows provided. Surface

detail is very slightly less restrained than some other contemporary kits but it is still subtle and well within acceptable limits. The cockpit is pleasingly complex and the manufacturer has gone to significant lengths to depict the interior of the sensor bay, providing detailed replicas of the five cameras mounted inside, plus internal structures and ancillary gear, very impressive. All this detail won’t be lost when the fuselage is closed up though; the two sensor bays can be shown off thanks to individual access hatches – with interior detail and no ejection-pin marks – on the top of the nose. The wings sport individual control surfaces and the rudder is a separate part too. The jet pipe is satisfyingly long, with outlet and intake detail. The airbrakes – again, detailed on both faces with no ejector marks

– can be fitted open or closed and the underwing pylons feature separate anti-sway braces, more nice touches. To sum up this all too brief review, Tanmodel have really put their creative hats on to produce this lovely-looking model of the extremely handsome RF-84F Thunderflash. To top off the model, Tanmodel include a display ‘panel’ depicting a section of runway concrete complete with taxiing markings. It’s made in the style of a slim mousemat, so you could use it as such if the model isn’t going to sit on it. A very appealing kit and one that will hopefully build up as good as it looks on the sprues. ● MN MODEL SPEC TANMODEL 1:48 REPUBLIC RF-84F THUNDERFLASH KIT NO.2201 SCALE; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:48 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . duard have skilfully chosen pre-existing (and top quality) sprues from another manufacturer to form the backbone of this 1:48 limited edition kit, making the ideal way to showcase their own excellent resin and photo-etched brass upgrade parts. The subject is, of course, the iconic McDonnell Douglas Phantom II – the F-4J to be precise – one of the Cold War’s best looking and most intimidating jets, much loved by aviation fans and modellers alike. As well as the resin and photo-etched parts, this special boxing includes two large and beautiful decal sheets (by Cartograf, of course). They offer five schemes for Phantoms from the early 1970s covering the Vietnam War and afterwards, up to 1976. All, with perhaps the exception of the all-black F-4J of ‘The Evaluators’ VX-4 NAS Point Mugu (1972), are very colourful and it will be tough to choose which scheme to use. A staggering quantity of data stencil decals are provided and all are clearly labelled on the sheet, so the modeller will be left in no doubt where each one goes when the placement guide is closely followed. In reality, a lot of these wore off or were overpainted, so it’s not essential to apply each and every stencil. The resin parts are from Eduard’s ‘Brassin’ line and include a pair of gorgeous ejection seats, two exhaust outlets with jet pipes/ fan detail and new main/ nosewheels. The two brass sheets, the main one being

pre-coloured, providing instrument-panel faces, ejection seat pulls, seat harnesses, fuse panels, jet pipe details and more, all made to Eduard’s high tolerances. Canopy masking is made much easier thanks to the inclusion of a sheet of pre-cut ‘kabuki-tape’ masks which are the best in the business. Overall, this is an excellent production, combining high quality

polystyrene parts with some of the best resin and photo-etched parts currently available, topped off with professional quality decals. PISTOL-PACKIN’ D Mattias Ärletun takes a 1990s Tamiya release and gives it the perfect paint-job

T

he Mitsubishi Ki-46 III (known as ‘Dinah’ by the Allies) was one of the most successful Japanese aircraft designs of WWII. A very sleek and aerodynamic airframe combined with two powerful engines made for a very fast machine with excellent high altitude characteristics. The initial versions served as reconnaissance aircraft and roamed the skies of the Pacific theatre almost untouched by Allied aircraft. Later in the war, when B-29s began appearing over Japan, the Imperial Japanese Army authorities needed a fast and high-flying interceptor to cope with the threat and the choice fell upon the Ki-46. The sleek nose of the recon aircraft was modified with a more conventional windscreen, the front fuel tank was removed and replaced with two 20mm guns and camera installations were deleted. One version – the Otsu + Hei – also carried an upward-firing 37mm cannon in the rear observer’s station, much like the Schräge Musik configuration seen on German night fighters of the same era. The Hyakushiki Shitei III Kai in this form was tasked with defending the Japanese mainland and apparently did quite well despite the pilots having originally been trained for reconnaissance duties.

’ DINAH! The airframe starts to come together

THE KIT

Tamiya released the recon variant of this aircraft in 1:48 in 1996 and the air defence fighter variant in 1997. The kit comprises around eighty-five parts in light grey and clear polystyrene. In addition there are a couple of polycaps for the propellers. When compared to todays kit releases the surface detail stands up quite well, with fine recessed panel lines and subtle rivet detail in places. Markings for three aircraft are provided; from 16th and 17th Dokuritsu Hikotai and 28th Hiko Sentai. The decals are Scale-Master from Vitachrome.

THE BUILD

This kit has been sitting in my stash since 1998 and I accidentally started building it a few months ago. I was tending to my young son who was home with a fever and I was only going to take a quick look in the kit box, when I suddenly found myself gluing parts together. Tamiya sure turned out some extremely well-fitting kits when they decided to reboot their line of 1:48 aircraft in the mid ‘90s and the Dinah is no exception. Kit instructions start off in the 'front office' as per usual. The cockpit consists of only eleven parts (the pilot figured not included) and although my intentions were to build the model out of the box with no additions, I deviated from my plan slightly and added a couple of extra levers made from fuse wire with knobs built up with CA glue, to the right console. The loader’s station in the rear fuselage is built up from even fewer parts but since I knew I was going to have the canopies closed, I managed to keep myself from adding extra detail to that area.

U

The interior is very much on show when the canopy is on, so it’s worth making an effort with the interior paintwork

The exhaust outlets were given a rusting treatment; the tips were made to look hollow by the judicious use of a fine-tipped marker pen

The materials used in the exhaust treatment stages are seen here, including the marker pen used for the tips

V INTERIOR The cockpit and all the interior surfaces of the fuselage were

airbrushed with Tamiya XF-85 Rubber Black, which is a very versatile colour indeed. The kit instructions suggest mixing equal parts XF-3, XF-21 and XF-58 to obtain a bluish grey-green shade for the interior but I chose to mix my own instead. Sadly I didn’t keep track of the different Tamiya colours in that mix, but XF-67 NATO Green and XF-57 Buff were major components in it. After masking off the instrument panel coaming and the upper portion of the fuel tank (located right behind the pilots back) this mix was then sprayed in thin layers on the interior parts, taking care to leave subtle shadows where the Rubber Black pre-shading shows through. Detail painting was carried out with Vallejo, Citadel and Army Painter colours and the breech of the upward-firing cannon received a layer of Vallejo Model Air 71.072 Gun-grey.

AGED DECALS

A decal is provided for the instrument panel but the detail on the panel itself is very good and with careful painting really comes to life. Since this was going to be an out-of-the-box build, I used the kit decal seatbelts. They cracked and I had a hard time getting them to conform to the seats but eventually managed to beat them into submission. Paint chipping in areas of wear and tear was done with a piece of sponge and some Panzer Aces (by Vallejo) 302 Dark Rust with a drop of acrylic retarder and thinned with Vallejo airbrush thinner. In the most exposed places I used a fine brush and thinned Shining Silver from the Army Painter colour range. I glossed the interior with Pledge/Future and then applied an oil-paint wash with 502 Abteilung Starship Filth

Engines and undercarriage ready to hop on board. The engines are largely hidden in their cowls

thinned with odourless artists’ thinner. These oil colours are perfect for scale modelling in that they contain less linseed oil than most oil paints and dry considerably faster. I cannot recommend them highly enough. The 37mm cannon breech was given a wash with Citadel Agrax Earthshade and then the whole interior was airbrushed with Vallejo Matt Varnish. Final touches for the crew areas were some Ammo of Mig Productions Europe Earth pigments on the cockpit and loader’s floors and tiny drops of gloss varnish to simulate glazing on the dial faces of the instrument panel.

AOTAKE UC BAYS

Before closing up the fuselage I chose to paint the gear wells in Aotake so after having assembled the main gear wells (where I deviated from the instructions by opting not to install the gear legs) I sprayed all three gear wells with Vallejo Model Air 71.065 Steel and then mixed Gunze Aqueous H96 Smoke Blue with Tamiya X-25 Clear Green and X-19 Smoke. The result was pretty much what I was looking for and adds a nice splash of colour to the undersides of the aircraft. The fit of the fuselage is perfect but I had some trouble with aligning the cockpit so I replaced the kit locating pins on the fuel tank with styrene rod. The entire lower wing is in one piece so no problems with getting the right dihedral there. One word of warning though: be very careful when fitting the wing spar (part A12) to the lower wing. Test fit, adjust and then test fit again to ensure the upper wing halves will mate with the fuselage without any steps or gaps. I needed a tiny amount of filler in the left wing root but otherwise Tamiya is to be commended for the ease of construction and fit of parts. This model goes from a pile of parts into a sleek heavy fighter in no time at all.

A subtle application of dust (pigment) transforms the tyres, as we can see above

The canopy was cemented over the cockpit, providing a perfect-fitting mask itself

A TRICK WITH THE EXHAUSTS

Masking-up this big canopy is quite a chore; Tamiya’s ‘kabuki’ style tape is the best material for this

Power units ready to be mounted on their respective nacelles

A silver coloured pencil was used to create tiny areas of exposed aluminium around access-hatch fasteners

The same pencil was used on key areas of the airframe, around service hatches

After the horizontal stabilizers had been fitted I tended to the small bits. The exhausts were airbrushed with Tamiya Rubber Black and a burnt and rusted appearance created with different layers of Mig Productions, Mr Hobby and Vallejo pigments, all secured with Mig Pigment fixer. Instead of drilling out the exhaust and run the risk of messing things up, I used a 0.05 Artline black marker pen to create the illusion of hollowed out exhausts. The trick worked out very well and you would have to inspect the parts at very close distance to call the bluff. The landing gear legs were sprayed Vallejo Model Air Steel and I wrapped some Bare-Metal Foil around the oleos of the main struts. Weathering consisted of 502 Abteilung

Engine Grease and Starship Filth. The tyres were given a coat of the ubiquitous Rubber Black and the wheel hubs were masked off and sprayed with Vallejo Steel and weathered with the same products and the gear legs. Ammo of Mig pigments was applied to give the tires a slightly dusty appearance. The engines lack a bit in detail but since they are buried deep in their covers on the Dinah and the prop spinners are big, I figured they would look fine with a coat of Vallejo Gun-Grey and a wash of Citadel Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade. The crankcases were painted Tamiya XF-82 Ocean Gray, with a lightened coat of the same colour misted on afterwards. Some subtle chipping with a sponge and Vallejo Cold Grey concluded this step.

The yellow bands on the blade tips were masked off and painted Vallejo Model Air 71.002 Medium Yellow and very subtle chipping added to the blades and spinners using a fine brush and thinned Army Painter Shining Silver. Everything was sealed with Pledge/Future and Starship Filth once again used to define the detail. Drilling out the muzzle of the 37mm cannon was a delicate affair but with a sharp #11 scalpel, some tiny drill bits and a bit of patience it suddenly looked like a nice resin casting. The nose mounted 20mm barrels were also drilled out and Mig Gun Metal pigment gave the parts a nice sheen. On the Ki-46, the greenhouse effect is especially evident. Masking the canopies with Tamiya tape took forever but since the glass sections will be a focal point on the finished

Before priming the model I thoroughly cleaned the surface of with 99.5% alcohol and then sprayed it with white Vallejo Surface Primer, which was polished with a nail buffer when fully hardened. The white wing and fuselage bands were painted Vallejo Model Air 71.119 White Grey and then masked off. I chose Gunze H62 IJA Gray for the undersides of the model and Tamiya XF-68 NATO Brown for the top surfaces. No traditional pre-shading was used but instead I began by spraying the panel lines with the same colour as was to go on later and then used multiple thin coats of the H62 and XF-68 respectively to build up a subtle tonal

New to Zvezda’s ever-expanding 1:100 armoured vehicle line-up is the Soviet 122mm ‘Gvozdika’ SPG. As with other machines in the range it’s remarkably well detailed for such a small scale and while’s it’s really aimed at wargamers it makes a very compact and attractive scale model too, with unitary tracks/ wheels, elevating main gun and up/down barrel clamp.

variation. The rudder and the top sides of the elevators and ailerons were masked off and sprayed NATO Brown lightened with Tamiya Buff to give further variation in colour. Given my trouble with the decal seatbelts I quickly realized that painting the markings on instead of using the kit decals would be a nice challenge. My compass cutter came in handy for cutting paint masks out of frisket film and I then painted the red Hinomarus on with Tamiya XF-7 Flat Red and for the meatballs on the upper sides of the wings, I lightened the red with a drop of white to simulate sun bleach. The whole model was then lightly polished with the nail polisher again.

The final weathering

I did not want to go totally over the top with the weathering on this machine so I used a trick that I once learned from the Editor of this magazine; A neatly sharpened Bruynzeel Fullcolor 285 Silver pencil (Marcus used a Berol Karismacolor pencil though) is perfect for making tiny paint chips along panel lines, access panels and areas of wear. Between the fuselage and the engine nacelles I made a rivet pattern to show were the boots of the maintenance personnel had worn the paint off. The engine covers received heavier paint chipping, using a combination of Bruynzeel pencil and the sponge technique and the white areas on the wings were chipped with a fine brush and Vallejo Panzer Aces 312 Leather Belt on the top sides and Vallejo Model Color 70.992 Neutral Grey on the undersides. The whole model was then given a gloss coat with Pledge/ Future. I did not feel confident enough to paint the stylized bird on the tail fin so I used the kit decals and this time too experienced great difficulty with them. With several coats

of Micro Sol and Mr Mark Softer they eventually settled down into the rivets and panel lines and once again the 502 Abteilung oil colours were brought out to define the detail; Starship Filth for the NATO Brown and Engine Grease for the IJA Gray and after the excess wash had been removed I sprayed the whole model with Vallejo Matt Varnish thinned with Vallejo thinner. On the undersides, streaking along the panel lines of the flaps, ailerons, access panels etc was accomplished with a mix of the two Abteilung colours previously used, as well as with pigments from various brands.

Wingtip lights

One of the few let-downs on the Tamiya Dinah is the way the large navigation lights on the wing tips are recreated. They are simply a part of the wing, moulded in grey styrene. I thought long and hard about how to deal with this but in the end I painted the lights with Army Painter Shining Silver and then used Citadel Baal Red wash for the port light and a combination of Citadel Asurmen Blue and Thraka Green washes for the wingtip light on the starboard side. The Citadel shades/washes have an almost magical ability to give an illusion of depth when they dry and with a coat of gloss varnish on them the navigation lights almost look like tinted clear plastic. The only thing left to do before final assembly was to paint the exhaust streaks on. I used the 0.15mm nozzle on my Harder & Steenbeck Infinity CR Plus airbrush to spray a heavily thinned mix of Tamiya Rubber Black from the exhausts and backwards, thinning the streaks out towards the rear of the engine nacelles. An equally thinned mix of Tamiya XF-19 Sky Grey created the lead staining seen closest to the exhausts and – using a black Bruynzeel pencil

This close-up view of the pilot’s are shows just how much is visible with the canopy fitted

V – tiny scuff marks in the lead were added.

The masking tape was removed from the canopies and all the fiddly parts were glued to the model. The landing gear doors needed some tweaking to fit right but otherwise the parts go together like Lego. The final thing to add to the model was the antenna wire running from the cannon barrel shroud to the top of the tail fin. Brown fishing line stretched with a heated screwdriver did the trick and by that the pistol-packin’ Dinah was finished.

THE CONCLUSIONS

I had not finished a model aircraft in almost eight years when I started building the Tamiya 1:48 Dinah (house, kids, *AMS, life, etc) and had never built a Japanese subject

The weathered underbelly; the author chose to keep this normally oily area fairly clean

before, but the low parts count, remarkable fit, ease of construction and manageable size of the model really made it the perfect kit for me to get myself back into scale modelling. It also provided me with a canvas to try some different techniques out and the out-of-the-box build challenged my tendency to always add extra detail. In the end though, it was a very satisfying experience to see that even a twenty year old kit can be turned into a nice representation of the real aircraft with a little care and creative painting. ● *AMS; advanced modeller's syndrome, where you have trouble starting or finishing a model project due to the near-compulsive need to add that little extra bit of detail.

KIT PREVIEW TAMIYA 1:24 FERRARI FXX K ● KIT NO.24343

SPECIAL K The Editor checks out an early test-shot of Tamiya's newest 1:24 car kit, the formidable Ferrari FXX K hybrid

T

he Ferrari FXX-K is a high performance competition car and prototype built by Ferrari in Maranello and designed by architect Flavio Manzoni, director of Centro Stile Ferrari. The FXX-K is based on the street-legal LaFerrari and production of the FXX-K began in 2015. The name 'FXX-K' is actually Ferrari’s research and development program based around a laboratory car which in turn is based on Maranello’s first hybrid, the LaFerrari. The ‘K’ in the new car’s name is referring to the kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) which is used to maximize performance. The FXX-K will not be used in competition and was developed to be completely uncompromising. It uses a range of modern innovations that will ensure maximum performance anywhere. The FXX-K produces a total of 1,035 horsepower, of which 848 are delivered by the V12 engine and 187hp by the electric motor, with a maximum torque of over 663lbs/ft. The V12 engine has been tuned for track use as well as the HY-KERS system. The FXX-K has extremely effective downforce generation and

the result is a downforce of 1,190lb at 220mph. Technical background source; Wikipedia

TAMIYA’S 1:24 MODEL

Construction of Tamiya's almost all-new kit kicks off with the engine, the moulded parts for which come from Tamiya's 2013 LaFerrari kit; as mentioned, the real FXX K is based on this machine too. The main structures of the powerplant are assembled then attention turns to the chassis. The kit centres around a main monocoque 'tub' rather than a traditional chassis (carbon fibre on the real thing) which is formed from two main mouldings between which the partially complete engine is 'sandwiched'. Suspension parts are then gradually added, including the huge brakes and workable steering system. Further aero parts are then fitted, including the massive rear diffuser and rear wheel arches, for which nylon mesh is provided to make the cooling intakes. The upper area of the engine is completed with the intake box which itself is topped off with beautiful plated metal, self-adhesive Ferrari emblems. The cockpit interior comes with

some very nice detailing but in true racing style, it replicates the cabin of the real car very well, in other words, it's quite sparse. But it's a functional sparseness and on the real car we see yards of carbon-fibre and Alcantara detailing. The dashboard controls come very much from racing technology rather than 'standard' street cars. The kit's racing seats dominate the interior and they replicate the asymmetrical form of the real things. Some precise masking will be required to differentiate the carbon fibre structure and Alcantara padding but thankfully, decals are provided for the central red stripe that runs done the middle of each seat and head pads. Decals are also provided for the seat harnesses and they are passable for a sealed up model. But the doors of this model can be

posed in the open position and for this, you'll want to add something a little more three-dimensional for realism. Tamiya are ahead of the game here, because to coincide with the release of the car kit, they have created a comprehensive photo-etched set (No.12668, available to buy separately) which provides numerous grille panels for the car's body (replacing the nylon mesh) and chassis plus the harness hardware. The straps are printed on a sheet of thin, self-adhesive vinyl which must be trimmed out and folded to shape, using the buckles and quick-release fastener from the metal sheet. It's potentially very realistic but we suspect that tweezers and lots of patience will be required when handling them. Tamiya have also created an impressively thorough set of carbon-fibre decals for the FXX K and these

Window parts are beautiful; perfectly clear with no defects

address the cockpit tub (the areas that can be seen through the windows), the aforementioned engine intake box, door liners, dashboard and switch panel, rear wheel arch liners, rear bumper insets, front grille inner frame, rear-view mirror struts, door sills and some other small aero parts. Unfortunately the seat buckets don't get any carbon-fibre, but what is

provided has the potential to look fantastic when applied to the model. The windscreen is provided with a mask to make the frame painting process a little easier; the single piece then just drops onto its frame from the outside of the model. As mentioned, the

doors can be open or closed and the car looks even more futuristic when they are placed in the open position. This is another exquisitely well engineered, finely detailed production from Tamiya that devotees of the 1:24 Sports Car Series will relish. It is a bit

more complex than most standard car kits so allow extra workbench time for your build, especially if you plan to incorporate the photo-etched metal and carbon-fibre decal detail sets. Top marks to Tamiya's design team for this achievement! â—? MN

M107 US SELF-PROPELLED GUN (VIETNAM WAR) www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:35 • MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS • KIT NUMBER; 37021 This is a wonderful, oldish kit from Italeri that I have never built, so it’s a delight to see it back. The kit is of course showing its age a little but that doesn’t detract from the appeal; it’s a gem from the 1970s with some Italeri panache, plus some ejector-pin marks and sink marks but we’ll forgive them for that. The subject is very impressive – the ridiculously long barrel makes you wonder how it stays on its tracks – and with some small improvements (Friulmodel tracks) it has the potential to look great. ISRAEL DEFENSE FORCES NAGMACHON DOGHOUSE LATE APC www.tiger-model.com SCALE; 1:35 • MATERIALS; IM, PE, MC, PC, WS • KIT NUMBER; 4616 Tiger Model are a relative newcomer and they have released some varied and interesting kits. The IDF Nagmachon is based on the Centurion hull, albeit heavily modified. Its main feature is the massive ‘dog house’ observation turret; its makes for an odd but interesting-looking machine and a fantastically engaging subject for a kit. The Centurion parts are look accurate and include a detailed but apparently quick to build suspension system. The tracks come as individuallinks (moulded in kit plastic) and as such will need assembling onto the running gear link by link, not a big deal and assembly is helped by the upper runs being completely hidden by the side armour. The lynchpin of a model with anti-RPG bar armour is how fine are the bars, and Tiger have done a pretty good job of it. A full-build of this kit will be in TMMI as soon as it’s built. MN

Great subject, classic Italeri detail, appealing additions from Tamiya

Scary-looking vehicle (!) and a highly detailed, involving kit with some nice touches such as printed sprue tags

BRITISH CRUISER TANK A34 COMET www.hannants.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; 35010SP Bronco initially released their A34 Comet in 2005 making it the first kit of this late-war British tank available in injectionmoulded plastic. It originally came with onepiece, flexible tracks and early-pattern idlers in cast resin but in this revised edition, we have a bag of individual-link tracks – a major improvement – and new early idlers in polystyrene. Also, the photo-etched parts are now grouped onto a single fret. The kit is one of Bronco’s earlier efforts and isn’t quite as refined as their recent (and superb) kits but all the structures are in place and the double-layered hull of the Christie suspension is depicted. Accurate Armour offer a few of update sets designed for the original kit release that this revised edition will benefit from too. MN

T-44 SOVIET MEDIUM TANK www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; 35193 This is an all-new kit from MiniArt and it’s a spectacular production from the tracks up. Not only is this an excellent replica of the late-war Soviet tank, it also features a very extensive interior that includes a remarkably thorough reproduction of the V12, 38.8 litre diesel engine, torsion bar suspension, fighting compartment floor, firewall, ammunition racks and more, although no driver’s area is provided. In the turret, we have a lovingly detailed miniature of the ZIS-S-53 85mm main gun which seems pretty complete; the gunsight and gunner’s seat and elevation gear are all present, plus the traverse gearbox, radio set, ammo racks and lots more. Amazing levels of complexity and a fascinating subject too. MN

KIT PREVIEW PILOT REPLICAS 1:48 SAAB J 29F ● KIT NO.48-A002

Sweden’s ‘flying barrel’ is now available from Pilot Replicas in the popular scale of 1:48

FLYGANDE TUNNAN T

he SAAB J 29F ‘Tunnan’ (barrel) was a Swedish-built jet fighter that was introduced in 1950 and retired from the Swedish Air Force in 1965. The Austrian Air Force used thirty examples and they served until 1972. It was powered by a license-built version of the British DeHavilland Ghost DGT3 engine, known as the RM2 and made by the company ‘Svenska Flygmotor’. It was very effectively armed with four Bofors M/47 20mm cannon and could also carry unguided rockets. In 1961/2, nine Tunnan J 29Bs and two S 29C recon jets were sent to the Republic of Congo with a UN peacekeeping mission. The jets received a multi-colour camouflage scheme and large ‘UN’ markings; they acquitted themselves well. Pilot Replica’s new 1:48 kit is with us and from our customary in-box

sprue inspection (full build to follow) it looks to be a sophisticated production. As well as conventional halves, the fuselage is also broken down into front and rear sections, presumably to allow other versions to be released. Surface detail is fantastically fine and well up to modern standards. A very decent cockpit is included in plastic, with photo-etched seat harnesses. The instrument panel features raised dial bezel detail and a decal is provided for the dial faces, offering a potentially realistic appearance. The main wheels are moulded in two halves and feature open spokes which will create a convincing look when assembled. They also feature flat spots which is a great help for the modeller. The canopy is crystal clear. Decals are provided for three overall natural aluminium aircraft, all from the

Swedish air force. One is plain metal overall, the others with coloured bands in black and orange, which will really make them stand out on a competition room table. To replicate the UN camouflaged version, you’ll need to backdate the model to a J 29B, for which you’ll need to consult references. Pilot Replicas have created some resin accessories for this kit (seated and standing pilots, two styles of drop-tank and brass pitot tubes) and there are shown in this issue’s New Releases Accessories pages. Overall, a very attractive looking kit with sophisticated detail and an apparently accurate profile. ● MN

PANZERWRECKS 19, YUGOLSLAVIA

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AIRCRAFT MODELLING TECHNIQUES VOL.3 PAINTING

DIEGO QUIJANO, AMMO OF MIG www.migjimenez.com This Spanish author must rate as one of the most skilful and creative aircraft modellers currently working and his new title from the ever-expanding ‘AMMO of Mig’ showcases his painting techniques brilliantly. If you have followed the previous two volumes you’ll know that this series takes a very thorough approach and Diego’s processes and methods are depicted in intimate detail throughout. He shows us how he sprays his models, starting from the preshading technique (initially popularised in TMMI and by Spencer Pollard many years ago), so nothing new there, but the following stages are where the real magic takes place, explaining how the multi-layered paint effects are built up to create some very engaging finishes. He uses the airbrush extensively and acrylic paints are a major theme; various brands are used. The creation of metallic finishes are described and here the author uses Alclad II paints very effectively, hinting at Vol.4 on weathering, which will be a fascinating read. For me, the most impressive model is the Fw190 in natural metal, its subtle metallic finishes are simply amazing, contrasted by the red-primed control surfaces. Wood structures, winter white-washes, camouflage and more are covered and even if you consider some of the painting a little over-the-top (the panel shading on the F-104 and A-37 Dragonfly from a different author are pretty, but overdone) this book provides a great deal of information on the creation of some visually appealing surface finishes and it’s definitely worth buying as a source of inspiration, when your modelling mojo is running low, as everyone’s does from time to time. LEE ARCHER, BOJAN DIMITRIJEVIC, PANZERWRECKS www.panzerwrecks.com ISBN 978-1-908032-12-6 The latest Panzerwrecks title focuses on the vehicles that would have been found in the-then Yugoslavia during the Second World War and as you might imagine, it’s a pretty varied collection of machinery from various nations. This is a landscape format, soft-cover production of 100 pages (including covers) and the machinery on show includes the Somua S35 (some great ideas for Tamiya’s recent kit in here), Belgian Vickers Utility Tractor, Sturmgeschutz L6 47/32(i), Autoprotteto (armoured car) S37, RSO, Sd.Kfz.8, Littorina Blindata Mod.42 armoured train, Spah Zug armoured train, Pz.Kpfw.M14 736(i), Pz.Kpfw.L3 731(i), Munitionschlepper UE630(f), Pz.III, StuG.III, Pz.Kpfw.M15(i), Pz.KpfwT34 747(r) and even a Panther! There’s lots more to see in this latest volume and as always, TMMI recommends it wholeheartedly for fans of armour in tatters... MN

he design of a horse-drawn, 3.7cm anti-tank gun (designated 3.7cm Pak L/45) by Rheinmetall commenced in 1924 and the first guns were issued in 1928. By the early 1930s, it was apparent that horse-drawn artillery was obsolescent and the gun was modified for motorized transport by substituting magnesium-alloy wheels and pneumatic tyres for the original spoked wooden wheels. Redesignated the 3.7cm Pak 35/36, it began to replace the 3.7cm Pak L/45 in 1934 and first appeared in combat in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. It formed the basis for many other nations' anti-tank guns during the first years of World War II. The KwK 36 L/45 was the same gun, but used as the main armament on several tanks, most notably the early models of the Panzer III. The Soviets used the PaK 36 carriage design for their 45mm M1937 AT gun. During the May 1940 western campaign, the Pak 36, being a small-calibre weapon, was found to be inadequate against Allied tanks like the British Matilda Mk.II, the French Char B1 bis and Somua S35. Still, the gun was effective against the most common light tanks such as the R35 during the Battle of France, where the Char Bs and Matildas represented but a small fraction of the total number of AFVs. In June 1941, during the initial phases of Operation Barbarossa, the Pak 36 could still penetrate the armour of the majority of Soviet AFVs at ranges up to 1000m from the front, with the notable exception of the T-28 and T-35, which it could only penetrate at under 100m. The Pak 36 could not penetrate the armour of the T-34s and KVs. By late 1941, however, the widespread introduction of Soviet medium tanks quickly erased the gun's effectiveness; miserable performance against the T-34 on the Eastern Front led to the Pak 36 being nicknamed 'Heeresanklopfgerät' (literally 'army door-knocking device'), for its inability to have any effect on the T-34 aside from notifying the tank of its presence by bouncing rounds off its armour in a futile manner (regardless of the angle or distance). l

Source; Wikipedia

In model kit form Tamiya released a 1:35 kit of the Pak 36 in the 1970s and it's still an excellent model that has adorned many a diorama in the intervening years. With a little refinement and careful assembly, it makes a good representation of the weapon. TMMI 246 April 2016

L D E F E NDER IN 1:3 2 Sean M. Lynch tells us how he painted and weathered Moebius Models' excellent 1:32 Viper Mk.II

I

have always been a big sciencefiction fan. The first movie I remember seeing is Star Wars Episode IV (back before they ever considered adding 'A New Hope' to the title). That love of Star Wars led to a love of Star Trek re-runs on TV and the first run of Battlestar Galactica in the 1970s. The reboot of Battlestar Galactica brought the original into the modern era with new special effects; the updated designs of the ships was

impressive too. I predominantly build tanks but started out building airplanes as a kid. Yet, I don’t ever remember building any sci-fi ships then or now. That changed once I saw a built up Moebius Viper and Cylon from the recent series at a model show. I quickly bought the Viper Mk.II kit at the show and began working on it, albeit between armour projects. Being predominantly an armour modeller, I wasn’t sure how to go about

the painting of the kit. Luckily I didn’t see a need to for updates to the kit as it is fundamentally sound and is great for a first foray into sci-fi model making. I knew I wanted to match the images on the box art, which showed a dirty Viper Mk II. I decided to keep the cockpit a bit basic in painting and focus on the exterior for this first attempt at sci-fi building and painting. The following steps will outline what I did with the kit. ●

After construction was complete, the Viper was primed with Vallejo Black Primer (73602). The kit provides excellent decals but I decided that painting the predominant red stripes would be better than using the decals. A mix of Vallejo Transparent Red (70934) and Scarlet Red (71003) was airbrushed in a pattern that loosely followed where the stripes would go. Masks were made using the decals as guides and affixed. The vehicle was once again primed in black to cover the red to avoid bleed through once the white was added

The Moebius Models Viper Mk.II is a rather simple to build kit in that it doesn’t have many parts. However, the detail is excellent. The fit is near perfect with a very minor amount of filling needed where the two halves meet. Here the construction is almost complete. Holes would be drilled in the spots for the manoeuvring thruster ports

A dark grey 'filter' (colour-wash) made from black and white oil paint was focused on areas of shadow. This added more texture to the white. The cockpit was painted at this time as well using Vallejo Black (70950) and Black Grey (70886)

Another round of the filter was applied to the shadows and areas needing more contrast A chipped paint effect was recreated using Vallejo Off-white (70820) were applied to show wear and tear on the vehicle

Moebius Models provide a pilot for the Viper which can be made into either a male or female pilot. I chose the female pilot because, well Starbuck. Vallejo paints were used; the green for the suit is a mix of Green Grey (70886) and Russian Uniform Green (70924) with a touch of Bronze (70998). The helmet is a mix of English Uniform (70921) and Bronze while the face shield is Blue (71004) with a coat of gloss. The vest is Leather (70871) and Black Grey (70862) for the patches

The insignia decals were added and a coat of satin varnish was applied. The metal details were painted. A black pin-wash was applied to the deepest details. Powder stains around the manoeuvring thruster ports were made from black pigment. With that, the Viper was complete!

I wanted to strengthen the shadows and at the same time add some grime. I also needed to reduce the grey tone a bit from the filters. To accomplish this I used AK Interactive Shadows for Grey Ships oil paint and Winsor and Newton Soft Mixing White oil paint. They were applied to the desired areas in a rough pattern and then blended in using a clean brush

The Editor’s Page... A much loved and respected member of the scale modelling industry passes away

GLYNN PEARSON, 1935 – 2016

A

fter many years of dedicated service to the model hobby industry and playing a key role in the introduction of Tamiya to the world outside of Japan, I am truly saddened to convey the news that Glynn Pearson has passed away at the age of eighty, at his home on Saturday 30th January. Glynn was a devoted and loyal member of The Hobby Company team – Tamiya’s UK importer and distribution company – and was instrumental in the establishment of the company back in 2000. He dedicated fifty years of his life to diligently, creatively and proactively working with the UK model industry, initially through the Richard Kohnstam (Riko) years and then latterly with The Hobby Company. My personal memories of Glynn are all about his kindness and cheeky sense of humour. We would see each other at the Hobby Company in Milton Keynes, UK, at the annual Nuremberg Toy Fair and the Shizuoka Hobby Show in Japan. He would greet me with a handshake and immediately ask me how my family were, always with a warm smile. I have sat down to many dinners with Glynn, the last when we were staying in the same hotel in Tokyo where we enjoyed several beers and then went on to find somewhere to eat Japanese food that wasn’t too busy. We ended up having ‘shabu-shabu’ in a small restaurant, where he regaled me with some extremely funny stories over more and more beer. A fun night indeed and one that will always bring a smile to my face when I think of him. Glynn’s passing is the end of an era and he will be hugely missed by all who knew him. See you again on April 21st editor@tamiyamodelmagazine.com
