NEW FROM TAMIYA! 1:35 M4A3E8 ‘EASY EIGHT’ SHERMAN

Photo; Wikimedia Commons

Tamiya has announced an almost 100% new kit (road wheels and other small parts use existing moulds, most likely from the recent M51), of the M4A3E8 variant of the legendary Sherman medium tank, known fondly as 'Easy Eight' by its crews thanks to the relatively smooth ride offered by its Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension (HVSS). Some of the 2,500 examples produced were in time to appear in the Battle of the Bulge of the winter of '44-'45 and it also served in the Korean War. Film buffs will no doubt also recall that the "Easy Eight" was the star of the 2014 hit film 'Fury'. More news on the kit soon. www.hobbyco.net

AN AN 'S' 'S' FOR FOR SENN SENN I

n the 1990s, the Castiglioni brothers, owners of the Ducati factory, maintained such good relations with the Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna, they decided to dedicate a limited series with the legendary 916. It was the Brazilian who chose the metallic grey and bright red colours during a factory visit in 1994, just weeks before his fatal accident at Imola. Until 1998, several batches of the 916 and 996 were produced exclusively

8

for the Brazilian market. To commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the death of the driver, the Bolognese firm decided to honour him by finishing their 1199 Panigale S by in the grey and red livery too. Only 161 examples were made, numbered from 001 to 161 (the number of times Senna took part in a Grand Prix) were produced for Brazil and just one machine, numbered 000, was reserved for the European market. It was acquired at auction

in Monaco on the 17th of May 2014 by the Italian rider Max Biaggi, who, like Ayrton Senna, has been either loved or hated but always respected! Another very lucky (and talented) chap by the name of Sébastien Ogier was given bike No.016 by the team he drives for – Volkswagen WRC – to say 'thank you' to him for winning 2014 WRC Championship. He promised not to ride it, but to leave it on display in his living room. I hope he was joking!

BLUE STUFF

I'd like to offer my warmest thanks the French producer 'Bluestuff' who has released this decal sheet for use on Tamiya's wonderful kit of the bike. The new darker scheme makes the bike look more aggressive; the contrast between the metallic grey of the fairings and flaming red rims is really outstanding. To emphasis the wonderful ease of assembly of the Tamiya Panigale, together with a simple but beautiful livery,

Philippe Devos enjoyed building the Ducati 1199 so much, he could not resist another; this time a conversion to the Ayrton Senna 'S' version with decals from Blue Stuff

The Blue Stuff decal sheet is small but busy. It provides all the markings needed for this very special bike.

It is very important to prepare the fairing parts before painting. The remains of the sprue attachment points were removed with a new blade and finished with sandpaper.

NNA NNA

Once the fairing elements had been removed from their sprues and tidied up, precise sanding and edge-scraping was performed on all the parts, to remove the last traces of moulding seams etc. 800 to 1200-grit was used for a finish as smooth as possible.

I set myself a target of ten days to complete the bike, including drying time. Basically this means that, without too much effort, you can have this amazing-looking replica in your showcase rather quickly. Forza Brasil! â—?

A small mishap occurred when sanding the saddle; the location-pin broke off... After drilling a small hole, a 4mm screw was substituted.

Following a layer of grey primer via a Tamiya aerosol, the metallic grey layer (Tamiya TS-38 Gunmetal) was applied in several thin layers, by airbrush.

The TS-38 is quite matt, so it was given a generous layer of TS-13 Clear. After drying for a few days, the hunt for dust was launched. A very light but thorough sanding was performed, followed by going-over with polishing compound in order to create a perfectly smooth, shiny surface.

To conclude the main painting, the author dutifully masked off the upper parts of the side fairings and applied a coat of TS-29 Semi-Gloss Black (aerosol).

decals are of incredible finesse, “soThe they quickly and easily adhered to the perfectly smooth surfaces... ” The decals – of which there are few – are of incredible quality, so they quickly and easily adhered to the perfectly smooth surfaces. A drop of softener was used, but just out of habit. A varnish layer could be applied but this is not essential.

The rims must be prepared carefully, as the red on black will be highly visible. So the spokes could remain in scale, Tamiya was forced to mould sprue-supports inside. Even though their sprue gates are tiny, particular attention must be paid to their removal, as does the joint line that runs around the inside. Cutters, a small round-file and sandpaper are the way to go here. The first layer (which pleased the author’s daughter) was made using the new pink primer from Tamiya. It covered well, dried quickly and is very fine-grained; it's perfect! The transition to red really easy because its coverage is optimised by the pink. Now we need a black primer, plus yellow, green, blue...

All parts of the black frame set (there are many) received a coat of Tamiya’s light grey primer to even out the surface.

The other mechanical parts were divided by colour which allows the rapid painting of all these elements. The author used Aluminium (TS-30), Titanium Silver (X-32), Gunmetal (XF-56), Flat Black (XF-1), a bronze mixture (X-33 +X-31) and Modelmaster Titanium for the exhaust.

28/08/2015 17:19

To avoid the tedious task of drilling the many holes in the brake discs, they can be represented by a little trompe-l'oeil with diluted acrylic black paint, deposited in the recesses. Once fully dry, the surface was gently sanded with ultra-fine grain (Micro-Mesh 12,000) with plenty of water.

and

The front fender was made of carbon-fibre on this machine. To facilitate the application of the decals, the surface was divided into four parts, each reproduced on a portion of masking tape by rubbing the edges with a graphite pencil.

Using directional carbon-fibre decal involved making a symmetrical 'chevron' from the top of the mudguard. Tape was applied to the back of the sheet, but due to some misalignment, the direction of the 'weave' came out wrong.

The orientation error has been corrected! Studio27's decals used here are of remarkable quality and are strong enough to withstand handling. Tamiya X-20A thinner was used as a softener, which produced a frighteningly wrinkled effect upon application, but don't panic! As it dried, the decal shrank perfectly onto the shape of the mudguard.

By observing photos of the real machine, we can see two small hoses from the nuts of the fork crown and on the rear shock. These are the electronic controls for the suspension settings.

Other parts also experienced the same alarming effect, but dried to a perfect finish as we can see in the final shot, below.

After glue autho modi

Everything comes to him who is prepared to wait! Once dry, we are treated to beautiful-looking parts, subtly covered with a thin coat of Tamiya TS-79 Semi-Gloss Clear for an impeccable finish.

This time, a trap was avoided and part C35 was fitted first, unlike my last Panigale build!

After making a glue stain on the upper part of the headlight lens (the glue is not absolutely necessary but it was an excess of zeal by the author), a carbon-fibre decal ‘eyebrow’ was ‘invented’. This unofficial modification hid the glue mark without being too noticeable..

To avoid further blunders, gluing on mirrors was done with the cowling on, but without the windscreen! This is easy to add at the end of assembly and stays put thanks to Tamiya’s precise engineering.

SA T

he North American T-6/SNJ 'Texan' was an advanced trainer for most Allied air forces from World War II through to the mid 1950s. During World War II, flying the T-6 was usually the last step in training before a pilot was assigned to a fighter or attack squadron. Built originally for the US Army Air Corps, the 'Texan' was also flown by the US Navy where it was designated 'SNJ'. It also served in all of the British Commonwealth Air forces, China and in several Central and South

American countries as well. The Australian Air Force modified the T-6 during the early stages of WW2 with additional .50cal guns to create the stopgap 'Wirraway' fighter. During the Korean War, the T-6 was used by the US Air Force as spotter and forward air control aircraft. They were called 'Mosquitos' because of the sound of the aircraft made as it flew at low speed over the target area. Initially, they carried weapons such as rockets and machine gun pods under the wings but they were

ordered to be removed later. It was possible that having weapons made the pilots felt inclined to attack ground targets themselves instead of doing their intended job.

THE KIT

The kit provides a detailed cockpit complete with fuselage framing and a detailed engine bay. I contemplated ways to allow all these details to show through on the finish model. I thought of opening up a section of the fuselage skin to show off some of the interior. The set of

photo-etched seat belts provided in the kit looks very nice, but I replaced the parts with a set of home made seatbelts made from wine bottle foil; the buckles were cut from thin styrene card. I used a set of Eduard photo-etched seat belt buckles as the template to do the cutting. The throttle quadrants part provided in the kit looked way too small and not realistic, so, I scratchbuilt a new pair of throttles for both cockpits. To make the round grip on the throttle handles, I used the catalyst balls

found in disposable water filtration cartridges. I cut open a Brita water cartridge and sorted through the mass of carbon crystals and catalysts. I was rewarded with a lifetime supply of little round balls to use for model building!

Once painted in a canvas colour, the harnesses look very convincing.

I painted the cockpit with acrylic interior zinc-chromate green. The instrument panels looked rather plain and the details were shallow. However, instrument panel decals were provided to apply over this surface and they looked rather good, with sharp details for the dials. I used Gunze's Mr. Mark Softer to help settle the decals and it worked perfectly with no melting. To my pleasant surprise, the instrument panel decals fit perfectly over the raised details of the instrument panels! That was too easy. The engine oil compartment bay between the engine and the cockpit firewall looks really nice but it sure could use more details such as hoses and wiring. However, all this detail would never be seen again once the fuselage sides were glued together. Once I glued the fuselage halves together the construction proceeded very quickly. The fuselage halves generally fitted together very well. The fit of the cockpit within the halves was very tight and I had to apply pressure to press these parts together while the glue was drying. The same pressure-fit was required to minimize the gaps between the top deck of the fuselage (part D5) to the instrument panel.

Despite my best efforts, a bit of putty was required to smooth out the gaps at these locations. During sanding, some of the raised rivets were sanded off which was unavoidable. However, these rivets were easily replaced with new ones made from snippets cut from stretched sprue. Thankfully, the central wing fitted perfectly to the fuselage and I did not expend any additional effort to smooth out these joints. Small gaps at the wing panel joints were filled using a liquid filler. You don’t have to buy aftermarket grooved wheels when you can do it yourself. I created tyre grooves by firmly holding a scribing tool on the table while I pressed the wheel up to the tool head and turn the wheel to score the groove. I used Squadron’s scribing tool (10202) to do this work. I noticed two weaknesses in this kit. The plastic used is soft, which is easy to cut and trim, but the down side is the surfaces of the fuselage and wings can be easily scratched and even chipped thus making repairs a necessity. The soft plastic also made the landing gear another source of weakness in this kit. When the model sat on its landing gear I noticed the 'fork' bend slightly under the weight. What this means is when

The radial engine takes shape; detail is excellent and looks convincing under a layer of paint and light weathering.

The engine back plate is seen here, with exhaust outlet on the left of the photo.

The cockpit builds up into a module that includes the engine mounts and engine. Note the oil tank in yellow.

Viewed from the other side, we can see the radio as well as the re-made throttle quadrants, front and rear.

I glue the wheels on, their alignment must be offset a bit to account for the flexing of the landing gear in order for the wheel to look straight when sitting. I think this might be okay when the model is new but I expect them to bend a bit more as the model age over the years. I think model manufacturers should provide cast-metal landing gear as a standard feature for 1:32 scale models! At the fuselage joints, I filled most of the gaps with thick cyanoacrylate glue and sanded them smooth. Panel lines and rivets that were removed during sanding were rescribed.

Mr Surfacer 1000, a form of liquidised putty, was used to seal up hairline gaps between larger components, in readiness for the painting processes to follow.

PAINTING

To prepare the model for a natural metal finish, I primed it with a light coat of Alclad 2 Grey Primer. This material is a lacquer-based primer and it 'grips' the plastic very well. However, the lacquer is a fast drying medium and thus it left a grainy surface as the primer dried. I polished the model again with a 4000 grit cloth until the primer was smooth. The only disappointment for me with this kit is the choice of markings. Although the markings are colourful, they are markings for modern day T-6 in private or local air museum collections. It would have been nice if they had provided at least a few choices of marking for battle veterans so I could install some of the external rockets and gun pods. I thought of doing ‘Deb’ with the colourful American flag around the cowl but I think the alignment of this decal around the compound curves of the cowl is problematic.

Redundant features on the fuselage were filled in with plastic card.

You don’t always need aftermarket wheels when you can do it yourself. Tyre grooves were created rotating the tyre against a scribing tool, held firmly on the table.

Alclad 2 grey primer was used as a foundation layer for the colour coats. This was lightly sanded back to remove graining.

Testors ModelMaster Bright Yellow was used on the wings and tail surfaces.

U The yellow was masked off and Alclad 2 Aluminum and Polished Aluminum were airbrushed on to replicate the bare metal finish of the fuselage and inner wing sections.

I selected the colourful Italian Trainer aircraft from the decal sheet as it offers a nice combination of natural metal and bright yellow surfaces. The kit decals depict the privately owned T-6G aircraft I-SSEP in Italy. To properly build this aircraft, one should not follow the kit's drawing and attach the black direction finder 'football' on the rear fuselage. Instead, this area needs a whip antenna. To avoid damaging the aluminium paint with masking tape, I painted all the yellow surfaces first. I used Model Master enamel Bright Yellow to paint the yellow surfaces. I buffed the paint surfaces with a 6000 grit polishing cloth after each coat of yellow paint for a beautiful smooth finish. After two days of drying, I masked off the yellow surfaces of the wings and the tail surfaces in preparation for the aluminium paint. I used Alclad 2 Aluminum for the natural metal finish and to obtain differing sheens to simulate aluminium panels, I painted the removable fuselage panels with Polished Aluminum and buffed it up. Although the real aircraft is kept in a pristine condition, I choose to weather the model a bit to make it more interesting. I hand brushed streaks of black-brown colour-wash along the panels near the engine to simulate oil leaks. This is done very lightly and carefully as I do not want to beat up this model. Finally, I scratch built a whip antenna from styrene and painted it white and attached it to the finished model. I don’t think the real aircraft carried any external tanks, but I choose to add the kit's external fuel tank for interest's sake.

CONCLUSION

I really like the quality of this kit because the fit was good, with nice detail on the parts and the recessed rivets/panel lines are not excessively deep. This T-6 model kit has potential for super detailing if one chooses to open up the fuselage panels to let the cockpit internal framework and other details to show through. The overall shape and length of the model measured well against scale drawings in the Squadron Signal Publications’ T-6 Texan in Action book. I only noticed the wheel well door panels are excessively long: They should not extend beyond the top of the wheel rim. Otherwise, this is fine kit from Kittyhawk of a classic subject that has never received treatment in 1:32 until now. ●

fter winning nine WRC World Champion titles, French driver Sébastien Loeb withdrew from this branch of motorsport. Not known to rest on his laurels, the Alsatian driver had many projects on the boil including, amongst others, the climb of Pikes Peak and GT endurance races. To prepare for future events such as Le Mans, the driver participated in a few races with his team (Sébastien Loeb Racing) in the FIA GT Championship where he finished third, driving a McLaren MP4-12C GT. The car was equipped with a 3.8-litre, twin-turbo V8 outputting over 600bhp. The chassis consisted of a carbon-fibre monocoque with an aluminium frame at the front and rear, plus a lightweight carbon-fibre body. The gearbox was a pneumatic, sequential six-speed with paddle shifters. This car can be re-created in 1:24 by using Fujimi 1:24 kit of the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 plus various transkits for detailing and decalling.

To create the car driven by Sébastien Loeb in 2013, the author used Tabu Design decal's with Fujimi kit.

The author also used a photo-etched set from Hobby Design which includes ventilated brake discs, wiper, pedals, dashboard display and buttons for the dashboard, not to mention many other things. A real treat!

Studio 27’s carbon-fibre effect decal sheet is dedicated to Fujimi’s McLaren MP4-12 C GT. It greatly helps the work needed by the modeller, not to mention the time saved.

TIME MANAGEMENT

As almost always, I started this project by building the body. This allowed me to save valuable time since I could take care of the interior while the body paint dried and cured thoroughly. Upon taking the main body moulding from the bag, I was amazed by the large amount of excess plastic that had to be removed from each side of the 'shell. Presumably this was to ensure rigidity and reduce distortion during the de-moulding process, after the plastic had been injected. The doors and side vents are moulded separately and their fitment would require no special effort as everything measures up to the millimetre. Having planned to use a detail set that includes the ventilation grilles, those moulded in plastic, both front and rear, were removed using a new X-Acto blade.

A significant amount of scrap material was removed from the body. We must be careful not to remove too much from the wheel-arches, or the penalty will be long sessions of filling and sanding.

PAINTING THE BODY

After degreasing, I prepared the body with Tamiya Surface Primer white. After drying, I sprayed several thin layers of TS-26 White (decanted, via airbrush) for faster drying. Although the livery consists of three colours (white, blue and metallic grey), it was only necessary to paint the central metallic grey band that runs from the front to the rear of the car; the blue stripes that flank the body are represented by decals, as we shall see. For the metallic grey, I had several choices open to me; Tamiya TS-17 Gloss Aluminium, TS-30 Silver Leaf or TS-83 Silver Metallic. So I did some tests on pieces of plastic and it was TS-83 that appeared closest to the actual hue when compared to pictures of the real car that I had gathered for the project.

The front air vents were removed using an X-Acto The side vents and doors were assembled dry to blade and the apertures then sanded out; the check their fit. The vents would not yet be fitted in same thing was done at the back of the bodywork. order to ease the decal application process. The louvres were glued in at this step because they’ll be painted in the same body colour.

A DECORATION WHICH GIVES YOU 'WINGS'

Sébastien Loeb's main sponsor for several years was the Red Bull energy drink and the logos are present on the McLaren GT3 too. In order to replicate this scheme on the model, I used Tabu Design's decal sheet (No.24034). Tabu's markings are magnificent; the colours are accurate and the transparent carrier-film around the decals is almost nonexistent. I started application with the blue bands and given the complexity of the car's shapes, I briefly contemplated painting them instead of using the waterslide markings. But this would have presented a major challenge in masking up for the blue areas, so instead, I armed myself with patience and a full bottle of Microsol decal solution!

I applied the blue markings onto the louvres of the front wings, then the other three that wrap around. The task was a bit daunting around the curves of the front spoiler but with a little smoothing using a flat brush soaked in Microsol, the decals managed to fit the shapes.

MOVE INSIDE

Somewhat surprisingly, the cabin's inner surfaces are moulded integrally with the engine deck; I will return to this later... To represent the alcantara dashboard, seat and steering wheel, I used XF-24 Dark Grey mixed with X-21 Flat

After spraying the primer and TS-26 White (and allowing them to cure), the areas of the body to be painted TS-83 were masked off with masking tape. With the tape off, the body was then given several coats of Mr Hobby varnish (airbrushed) in anticipation of the decal application process.

After a light sanding of the varnish with 2000-grit paper and water, the blue decal strips were affixed. Tabu Design's Decals reacted very well to Microsol The final decals (logos and names of the drivers) and the bands perfectly fitted the convoluted forms After a liberal application of Micro-Sol, the of the bodywork. However, this did not prevent two author waited forty-eight hours for the solvent to were then positioned, as was the carbon-fibre evaporate before applying a final gloss varnish. fuel-filler surround from the Studio 27 sheet. tears appearing at the base of the rear pillars.

The painting of the rear panel demanded a complex masking job; Tamiya tape eased the task.

X-18 Semi-Gloss Black was then be applied without the risk of overspray. We must follow the same techniques for the window surrounds and the bonnet vents.

The author chose to separate the floor/centre console to facilitate the painting of the interior.

Here we see the work on the window aperture surrounds.. The body was finally ready to receive its last elements.

The console buttons were replaced by metal ones turned from Hobby Design, undeniably better looking! The alcantara colour was attained by mixing XF-24 Dark Grey and X-21 Flat Base. The seat gets its Kevlar back surface from Studio 27’s sheet and the extinguisher was painted in Testors Chrome Silver (1790).

Base. After spraying, the finish looks a little satin but as it dries, it becomes very flat replicating the alcantara synthetic suede well. The extinguisher was painted with Testors Chrome Silver (1790) and the photo-etched parts were then shaped and installed in place of the original plastic mouldings. I wondered whether to add wiring, but with the doors closed and the interior very dark, I decided to stop there.

A 'LITTLE' MECHANICS

I will discuss here the most disappointing part of this kit; the engine. I expected this to be

represented in more detail, but instead we have a rather crudely formed V8, moulded into its compartment. Only the cylinder-head covers, the main block and the two rear filters are represented which was a little disappointing, especially as it's really not practical to paint it all. The back cover is not openable, but considering the large rear windscreen, it deserved more attention. I used Testors Aluminium (1401) on the engine block and filters. The cylinder head covers were painted XF-1 Flat Black as were the various pipes. And it was done! From memory, this was one of the quickest to paint engines I've ever experienced!

Harness hardware also come from the set by Hobby Design. The belts were made of a red cloth ribbon found in haberdashery shop. The flat areas of the To paint the representation of the engine, the interior door panels and the rear wall are decals by author brought out his paint brushes. Fujimi Pit Wall. The rollcage consists of only three pieces; could have better detailed this part of the model. and was painted Testors 1406 Black Metal.

The entire cockpit/engine was then cemented to the frame, after having been coated with Tamiya TS-79 Semi-Gloss Clear. Note the magnificent ventilated discs brakes by Hobby Design.

Photo-etched radiators and fuel caps, fitted to the body. Here are the assembly steps for the Hobby Design brake rotors. The author made an assembly jig using plastic card and metal rod to accurately align the eleven parts that make up each disc.

Fujimi have captured the profile of the mighty McLaren extremely well and the decals look magnificent.

To ‘erase’ the central moulding seam of the tyres and create a lightly worn effect, the author used model wheel mounted on a metal rod, fitted in the chuck of a small electric drill. The tyre was rotated against sandpaper, et voila!

Then it was the turn of very clear glazing parts, whose edges had been previously painted.

FINISHING OFF

Curiously, the small, removable driver-side window is moulded on the inside and not outside and I must confess, I've no idea why... Anyway, Fujimi provides the masks for the windows, which greatly eases the painting process. Be careful to apply the mask for the front windscreen from the inside and the side windows from the outside, because it is not specified in the instructions. A shot of X-18 Semi-Gloss Black, et voila!

TO CONCLUDE

Apart from the under-detailed engine and some inaccuracies within the instructions on the colours to be used, Fujimi has created a kit of a good standard that's very easy to build and very topical. To achieve this result, I needed to acquire and use several sets of aftermarket accessories, but to me, it was worth the effort. And I can now proudly display another racing car driven by France's hero, Sébastian Loeb. Forza Loeb! ●

MOGAMI'S MANY FORMS Tamiya's 1:700 IJN Mogami Light Cruiser is made up from sprues of varying vintages but the end result is a potentially excellent replica of the Battle of Midway veteran

T

amiya originally offered Mogami in 'Aircraft Carrying Cruiser' form, around 2002. The 'new' kit is configured with all five turrets and therefore depicts the vessel before she was badly damaged on June 6th 1942 during the Battle of Midway. Following this damage, Mogami was sent back to Japan for a major refit which involved the removal of her damaged fourth and fifth turrets and the installation of an aircraft handling area on the extended aft deck, so the current release is a backdating of the moulds to depict her in pre-damage spec. As indicated on the box, the kit is a waterline production and as such, comes only with a hull split along the waterline as she'd appear in calm waters. A rectangular

metal weight is included for installation within the hull to add a little extra presence to the model. The main structure is taken from the older release, but from the deck upwards we have new parts to reflect her original appearance. Even though the model is largely made up from older sprues, the detail is excellent and with a little attention from photo-etched manufacturers plus some rigging – and maybe even a seascape setting – the kit will form an excellent replica of this fast and potent vessel. ● MN MODEL SPEC SCALE; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:700 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . t's 5:30am, on a spring day, 1940. A deafening roar awakes Maurice Leon, owner of 'Garage Leon'. So, it must be true, the Germans are coming! The idea of his village being invaded is such an abomination, Maurice hardly dares to look through the shutters. But in the darkness of early morning, he just about sees a Tricoleur on a vehicle, which stops right outside the gas pump. Maurice rushes down to the ground floor, opens the big metal door to his garage and comes face to face with a young lieutenant who throws him a smile; “good morning to you sir! The survivors of a squadron from the 13th Dragoons, returning from the front, had stopped in the main street of the village, providing an opportunity for the crews to enjoy a few minutes of rest, perhaps to gather some provisions and refuel from the pump at the corner. All this before returning to the ever-approaching front and to try and slow the German panzers.

TOP SOMUA

It was with enthusiasm that I welcomed the Editor's offer to build not one, but two Somua S35s, hot off the moulds from Tamiya. It had been almost twenty years since I had assembled the only S35 in injection plastic which then existed; the Heller kit. So it is with undisguised joy that I welcomed this new release from Tamiya. The model

is simply splendid, with a fine casting effect on the hull and turret that is clear to see upon opening the box. All the parts are impeccably moulded in the usual sandy-beige plastic used by Tamiya, with an excellent level of detail on the exterior. The assembly is, as always with Tamiya, a real breeze, to the extent that the kit is suitable for both beginners and more experienced modellers alike. Even the injection-moulded track links are easy to assemble; simply snap them together and the two sides can be assembled in less than an hour! Tamiya had the good idea to depict the whole of the running gear, even if it is largely hidden under the protective skirts on the completed model. This will allow those who wish to represent a machine in the maintenance shop, or perhaps destroyed by the roadside. Similarly, most of the hatches giving access to the engine are separately moulded, so it will be easy to use detail sets when they have been developed by aftermarket producers. The hatches of the fighting compartment are provided separately as well. I'd like to add that the choice of markings is very interesting, with three tanks operating from the 4th Cuirassiers Regiment and 13th and 18th Regiments of Dragoons, the latter two also covered as colour-profiles in the Trackstory book No.11 from Editions Barbotin, dedicated to S35.

ADDITIONS V MINOR As usual with Tamiya

kits, not much is needed to improve the model, so I'll refer to them as 'supplements' instead of 'improvements'. I made a small slit between the two vision blocks of the driver and radio operator. On the turret, I just worked the plastic a little to highlight the hinge pins of the rear hatch and the 47mm gun, visible on the right. The other additions came from a new set dedicated to Tamiya's Somua S-35, graciously provided by Azimut. In fact, it was this set of resin parts that inspired me to create the diorama seen here. It includes a small section of the engine compartment, specifically the top of the water tanks for the cooling system and petrol tanks, hence the idea of a refuelling halt. The other resin parts of the Azimut set are primarily to detail inside the turret which unfortunately remains very visible upon completion kit (at least on the opened-up tank 'No.02'). Azimut's resin armament system for the kit is very comprehensive and is accompanied by the turret

rotation system as well as two vision blocks for the turret sides. Outside, Azimut provides small lifting hooks of the upper turret and a new blackout headlight that is more detailed than the Tamiya part. The sliding lock inside the main side door on the tank's left flank is also provided, should you wish to present this door open (an interior would, of course, be needed for this). At this stage, to fully understand the parts offered by Azimut, watching the DVD offered by Editions du Barbotin was very informative. It contains original and highly detailed information on the real vehicle, with a full description of the maintenance procedures of the tank. Wanting to represent two S35s who survived a fight with the oncoming panzers, I reproduced impacts on the body and the turret with a heating tool used in the hobby of Pyrography (wood-burning) and I also used this to deform the storage boxes installed on the right side of tank No.02 and tweaked some areas of the mudguards.

U

Azimut’s resin armament “system for the kit is very comprehensive... ”

Essential reading; Trackstory No.11 on the Somua S35 provides a ton of useful references for building Tamiya’s 2015 kit

Tamiya has taken particular care to reproduce the chassis, although it will remain hidden behind the wheel skirts and side shields thereafter.

Tamiya turret was supplemented by elements of the Azimuth set that reproduce the weapon system in great detail. Before finally closing up the turret, the Azimut parts were painted and weathered.

Azimut also includes in its set the area for filling the water-tanks and two petrol tanks, located behind the right rear hatch of the turret. This is what inspired the author to make the diorama.

Many impacts of enemy fire were reproduced on the armour of the two S35s, especially on the front and the turret.

The location was drilled out. The hatch is also provided by Azimut; it will be installed after painting.

There are different types of coupling on both tanks (Tamiya offers a choice) and towing chains were only fitted on one of the two.

Tank ‘02’ is recognizable as a command vehicle by its two radio antennae, which will be installed at the very end of painting. It also has side casings, absent on ‘45’.

C. Besides the shell impacts, a vision slot was added between the two vision blocks. The blackout light is a part of the Azimut set and is better detailed than the Tamiya part. D. The exhaust pipes of the big V8 that propels the Somua are particularly realistic. They will be glued permanently after having being weathered individually. E. The tarpaulin is missing on '02' but the author has represented one of its retaining straps with Tamiya masking tape. Metal chains included in the kit perfectly complement the rear of the model.

F. The tools were installed according to the recommendations of the leaflet. As there was no strap, the author represented them with masking tape. G. On the right side of the turrets, the author reproduced the barrel axis and some shell impacts. H. The many impacts were made using the wood-burner to suggest the hard fighting of Spring 1940.

The exhaust pipes are treated separately using Tamiya acrylics in various brown, red and orange tones.

Tamiya masking tape was used to reproduce the typical camouflage patterns seen on Somuas during the campaign in France.

V OVERPAINTING For the camouflage patterns,

I complied with the colour guide included by Tamiya, which seemed accurate. Trackstory book No.11 describes very precisely the camouflage worn by each series of vehicles based on its production on Somua assembly lines. There are at least six different patterns that were adopted, according to the registrations of each tank. As for colours, some picky-minded folk might find fault with the colour guide in the kit, but I don't get too worked up over an alleged actual hue. Anyway, with the effects of patination and colour-washes, the basic shade undergoes many changes. After spraying Tamiya grey primer (aerosol) on both models, I took advantage of the drying time to paint and weather-up the inside of No.02's turret, before finally closing it up. I used Tamiya masking tape to delineate each colour and attain very precise curves. For the turret of tank No.45, I opted to paint by brush because the contours were too tortuous for masking. Each colour was defined by a black painted 'hem' for which I used a black 'Posca' felt-tipped

gouache pen, equipped with a fine tip. I then started ageing the pair of S35s by applying simulated paint damage. For this, I first applied small spots of colours that were close in tone to those of camouflage, but slightly lighter. I then touched in every spot with a rusty-brown colour. The result seemed enough to me, so I didn't add the usual step of micro-painting. I then applied a gloss coat over all parts, before applying the decals. These came out of the box, but I modified the registration and tank numbers to personalise my models a bit. A second layer of gloss varnish was then applied over the decals, to seal them permanently. Several Tamiya Panel Line Accent Colors were applied, and after about ten minutes, I gently rubbed off the excess by wiping with a soft cloth, dampened with enamel thinner. Then, with the use of a sponge dampened with thinner Tamiya, I reproduced rain streaks on the sides of the both tanks' hulls and turrets. After having dried overnight, I sprayed a generous coat of matt varnish over both models'

After applying a gloss coat, the decals were applied. The registration number was amended by the author to customise the models, using numbers from the two decal sheets.

The turret numbers were also modified by the author. View of the two Somuas completely painted. Note the black 'hems' defining the colour boundaries, drawn with a black gouache felt-pen from the Posca brand.

Tamiya’s Panel Line Accent Color were applied generously throughout the model, here on ‘45’.

After ten minutes of drying, the surplus was gently wiped off with a soft cloth dampened with enamel thinner. With a foam brush, the author then created various vertical streaks on the hull.

surfaces to protect all this work and to re-instate a more natural-looking finish. I finished up by creating a metallic patina to on the relevant parts using silver and graphite coloured pencils by Faber-Castell. These work very well on the flat paint and allow the modeller to highlight the impact of shells, corners of the body and fenders, plus the metal parts of tools and weapons. Finally, I used Mig Productions' weathering pigments to add a dusty/ muddy covering on the underbody and caterpillars.

Colour-washes created a tired appearance in the paint, while accentuating the many raised details. Note that at this stage the exhaust pipes are not yet installed.

The tracks, first painted dark brown, were gently drybrushed with X-10 Gunmetal and X-11 Chrome Silver for the areas in contact with the ground. The headlight also received a layer of X-11.

With silver coloured Faber-Castell pencil, the author highlighted the edges of the tank, plus its shell impacts.

The running gear was treated with pigments from Mig Productions; mainly Dark Mud but also small touches of Gulf War Sand.

U

Faber-Castell pencils (silver and graphite), used alternately or superimposed, enabled the author to reproduce the surface where the worn metal appeared, like here on the fender.

Both S35 were completed by permanently installing the last parts that had been painted separately, such as the exhaust pipes and both radio antennae on ‘02’, a command tank. Only a few S35 were equipped as such.

A. The exhausts were treated by depositing Mig Productions' rust coloured pigments, before fixing them on the finished models. The author blackened the outlets with black pigments. B. The chains were painted brown and covered with more further colour-washes before being installed on '02'. C. The sprocket teeth were enhanced with a steel colour, drybrushed on. The underbody was treated with pigments in order to recreate a dusty appearance. D. The large turret numbers of both tanks consist of unit markings from the kit's decals. For the roundel, we suggest you either make a hole before application or cement the lifting hook over the top of the decal. The author preferred the first option and only had to hand-paint a few touch-ups. E. The tarpaulin is superb, worthy of the best productions in resin. The author enhanced the straps with masking tape for added realism. F. The metal parts of the tools were weathered by rubbing on graphite Faber-Castell pencils before buffing up with a polishing disc mounted in a Dremel. We can see here the refuelling point and water fillers from Azimut's detail set. G. The shell impacts, first painted black, were then treated with a rust-brown wash before being given a metallic lustre with a silver coloured-pencil.

DIORAMA LÉON V CHEZ The diorama consists of a

wooden base onto which I glued Tamiya's Diorama Material Sheet 'Cobblestones' Type A. Mr Léon's garage was constructed from foamboard and again I covered it with Tamiya's Diorama Material Sheet, this time 'Brickwork'. These Tamiya products have a slight relief pattern and can be cut very easily. The raised parts such as concrete were made from plastic card, like the zinc roof, eves and gutter, concrete ledges, chimneys, the door of the workshop and the front of the garage. The large raised letters are stickers made from cork. After painting, I added some advertisements found on the internet, printed off onto photo-paper; the 'BYRRH' wall-advert was created using airbrush stencils. The pathways were made from thin foamboard onto which I pasted sections of Tamiya's Diorama Material Sheet 'Cobblestones' Type B. The fuel pump is by ADV (provided by Azimut),

The panels of the foamboard building were covered with Tamiya brickwork sheeting.

The stage is set: two Somua S35s make a stop in a village! The building in the background is just being test-fitted here (no glue), with several pieces of foam board. The letters are from self-adhesive cork. The author could have stopped there and staged yet another urban combat scenario, but Azimut's set inspired another idea...

slightly altered after looking at pictures found on the internet. The figurines that animate the scene come from the two Somua kits (one was

been substantially altered), the MiniArt range (tanker standing) and an MK-35 figure, converted into pump attendant.

The décor is complete and ready to receive the models. The many components added to the foamboard base were mostly made of card and plastic profiles of different thicknesses and sections.

H H. The paintwork has breathed life into the brick wall and the addition of advertisements ideally complement the diorama. The 'BYRRH' sign was painted with two stencils on a red background. The 'Azur' and 'Kervoline' enamel plates come from a printout of vintage advertisements found on the 'net. I. The concrete parts, shutters and lamp were all made of card and plastic sections. Large letters are cork. J. The roof and the gutter were made with card and plastic profiles. K. The dust and dirt on the cobbles of the street and path were reproduced with Gulf War Sand pigments. The excess was removed with a fingertip. L. The faรงade is reminiscent of a garage from the '30s/'40s. The glass parts of the workshop door were represented with a piece of an old notebook cover. M. The ADV gas pump with its beautiful decals is ideal for this scenario. Note the oil stains on the cement and the can on the floor. The figure, a production by the French artisan maker 'MK35' was converted by the author into a gas station attendant. N. On the left of the photo we can see the painted and patinated brickwork; on the right we see the plain Tamiya brickwork sheet as it comes. O. Again, the effects of a simple pigment powder application made by the author can be seen on the Tamiya Cobblestone Diorama Material Sheet.

WALK! V CAKE Tamiya, thank you. This

is another stunning little model that I had a lot of fun building – times two! The refuelling scenario is slightly unusual and offers an attractive way of presenting the two tanks and it was enjoyable to construct, using Tamiya's Diorama Sheets. I wish you a fun time with your Somua S35! I'd like to thank Azimut who sent us samples of the necessary resin parts for detailing the two S-35s and I also want to thank the publishers of Editions Barbotin who kindly sent us Trackstory No.11 and the DVD 'Technitracks No.4', which is both fascinating and very informative. ●

Tank '45' with the ace of diamonds on the sides of the turret sports a camouflage scheme using the same shades as '02' except the blue on top of the turret. On the latter, the design is much more complex. The camouflage of French tanks is very rich and diverse, allowing you to customise each model.

www.creativemodels.co.uk www.acrylicosvallejo.com Vallejo Acrylics from Barcelona have created a new range of metallic paints that use a water-based solvent, pre-thinned for spraying and entitled 'Acrylic Metal Color Airbrush Colors'. At the time of writing there were nineteen shades in the range, listed below. The paints employ the latest generation of metallic pigments which offer a remarkably bright lustre and being water-based, they feature low-toxicity (although a mask should always be worn when spraying, plus plenty of ventilation in the workspace). We will be trying out these paints soon in TMMI as they appear to offer a very efficient and realistic way of creating a metallic finish without the need for a layer of primer, as lacquer-based metallics usually do. www.creativemodels.co.uk www.acrylicosvallejo.com Vallejo Acrylics 'Air War' product line comprises packs of eight, 17ml bottles of acrylic paints, accurately colour matched to their subjects. New to the range are three sets for Luftwaffe aircraft, for the pre-war to 1941 and 1941 to war's end periods, plus a set for maritime and tropical camouflage colours. The colours are drawn from Vallejo's excellent 'Model Air' range and are all RLM-matched for accuracy. These paints are mixed for airbrush application but we have found that they hand-paint very well too. Also new is a set of eight shades to re-create wood on models, from new timber to old, worn and stained wood. Finally, the 'Game Air Face Painting' set brings us eight colours for the creation of convincing flesh-tones. These are ideal for large-scale figures, which are better when airbrushed as they have larger surface areas than 1:35 faces and hands. AMMO OF MIG JIMENEZ, SPAIN

www.migjimenez.com Mig Jimenez is a key figure in the revitalisation of modelling techniques from the late 1990s to the current day. His newest company, 'AMMO of Mig Jimenez' now boasts a sizeable line-up of paints, weathering materials and more; the latest are 'Cockpit Sets' which each comprise a base colour in acrylic paint (17ml) plus two, enamel-paint based colour-washes (35ml x2). One of the washes is a general shade to enhance the base colour, the other is for localised washes that will enhance and accentuate moulded-in detail in the traditional manner. In the case of Early Luftwaffe and WWII British cockpits, the second washes are replaced with 35ml pots of earth-toned pigments for the cockpit floors etc. Very handy indeed! he RG31 is manufactured by Land Systems OMC of South Africa. As with the other vehicles in the MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) family it features a V-shaped, all-steel, welded armour monocoque hull and high suspension, typical for South African mine protected vehicles, providing excellent small-arms and mine blast protection. It is based on Mamba APC and can accommodate a crew of eight to ten soldiers and crew (including the driver). Dismounting is provided via a large rear door and two front doors (depending on the model). It can be modified for armoured personnel carrier, command and control, ambulance, scout vehicle, or other applications. The engine, transmission and fuel cell were situated inside the armoured hull for maximum protection. On some vehicles, a remote weapons-station was fitted to the top of the vehicle, further improving the crew’s ability to return fire while being protected. For route clearance operations, spare tyres were normally removed and additional armour added to protect air tanks and fuel lines. Prior to its debut in the Unites States Army, the RG-31 had been used extensively by NATO and UN Forces in various peacekeeping operations throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s the same as non-governmental organisations which requiring a vehicle with a non-aggressive appearance to protect their personnel against land mines. The main operators of RG-31 are United States, Canada, Spain, United Arab Emirates but some small amounts are used in other countries worldwide. The RG-31 saw the combat in Afghanistan and Iraq mainly, but it serves in Balkans and Lebanon. TMMI 240 October 2015

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY VEHICLE KINETIC 1:35 RG31 MK.3 MRAP ● KIT NO.61012

V KIT I have to admit that I was

a bit disappointed upon opening box. I had read a lot of reviews where the authors 'clap their hands' a lot but perhaps they did not look carefully at the parts. I am not saying the kit is bad, but here and there we see that level of detail and finish is below current standards. Some of the parts need a lot of patience and work to look good, but in the end it is possible to make a good-looking model. Despite of the occasional variable quality of the RG-31’s parts, this kit is a perfect addition to an MRAP collection. It is one of the smallest vehicles in this family but it is 'must have' subject. Without doubt it is a unique subject; no other manufacturer makes an RG-31 as a plastic kit. Hopefully there will be more interesting colour schemes and markings because of its growing usage. The model comprises approximately 203 parts in sand-colour plastic, plus clear parts, twenty black vinyl parts and a photo-etched fret. Markings are provided for three vehicles. The box provides also two additional sets; Masterbox figures 'US Soldiers Check Point Iraq' and J’s Work 'Check Point Road Block Equipment Set'. The RG-31's name of Nyala (a spiral-horned antelope from southern Africa) is quite appropriate as the vehicle has plenty of extended antennae, but to make it more interesting and eye-catching some additional parts proved necessary. So, after the searching in the model shops I decide to add some appealing elements, which I have listed in the 'Modelspec' section.

The real windows on MRAPs are tinted green. They are not usually as dark as this, but here the author decided to make them less see-through as the interior was too basic to show, plus the green panes also visually break-up the sandy/dusty look of the vehicle's exterior.

The PE elements were really small and to bend them properly, good tools were needed. With the perfect ‘RPToolz Bender’ I did my work with no stress.

Overall view of the 'ready to paint' model. The kit was upgraded with five antennae, resin on the back and metal on the front.

The author considered using DEF resin wheels to replace the originals but chose not to buy them. They are excellent, but Kinetic's wheels are quite good and it was not necessary to change them.

BUILDING

The main building process followed the instruction leaflet, but in some places I used replacement parts. The most important and visible is the resin mine plough from Legend Productions. It is nicely cast but in comparison with pictures of real ones I noticed that some details are missing. It is not too hard to make

The details of the mine roller are clearly visible. Note the IED device.

them, so just a couple minutes were needed to upgrade the assembly. The front of the vehicle was enhanced with an anti-IED device build from PE parts. The turret's armour was also added; a typical field modification built with materials available in the repair workshops. The kit is equipped with a interior section. It provides the main features plus some details, but they are invisible when all doors and hatches are closed. Otherwise, a Legend Productions interior set (LF1278) will be needed.

PAINTING

The kit was painted in a 'colour gradient' technique, ie; from the darkest shade of paint on the bottom, medium on the main areas and the lighter on the top. It builds up a nice-looking contrast, especially when the small details are painted with a brush to contrast the main colours, which have been sprayed on. At the start, it looks a little strange but after a colour-wash application the big differences between colours disappear. The window panes were airbrushed with AK Interactive's transparent paint. I know that here they appear to have a quite an intense shade but it breaks up the monotonous, sandy look of the whole vehicle. The details were painted by hand; for the wheels I used Lifecolor's 'Black Rubber' shade (CS27).

All of the components were undercoated with black primer.

The gradient technique goes from dark tones at the bottom edges of the model, medium tones on the side areas to light tones on the top. It is the author's version of 'colour modulation'!

The most fun part of the painting stage was to use a normal paint brush and 'colorize' all of the kit’s details.

The author always paints his wheels in different colours and configurations – here you can see three rubber shades. Note the finish of the rims.

U

A mixture of AK122 and Ivory was used to paint the details and edges. It lightened-up the whole kit and even after a colour-wash application, is still visible.

V DECALS After the paint had been

applied and dried, I started the decal application. Kinetic includes a small decal sheet with three different machines: RG-31 Mk.3 '278', unknown US unit, Iraq, 2006 (overall sand), RG-31 Mk.3, '522', USMC (overall sand) and RG-31 Mk.3, UNIFIL, Lebanon, 2007 (white). As you would expect, their quality is perfect but some of them are unfinished. Maybe the designer forgot to add some lines and letters? I used the set from the box plus some markings from Echelon's set D356166 'RG-31s in Afghanistan'. They include vehicles with 'Transformers' names. Because I like to change my decals a little, they were modified – I replaced the letters in the vehicle’s name from 'Blackout' to 'Outback'.

Before the decals were applied, the author airbrushed a layer of gloss varnish. Let’s go and play with oil paints! Mainly yellow tones were used to change the shades on the horizontal surfaces only. Before that the author applied 'Wash for DAK vehicles'. For dark coloured parts he used Dark Brown wash, both from AK.

The Transformer name and logo are the most recognizable parts of the vehicle’s individual look. Set and Sol liquids helped in sticker application.

WEATHERING

A thin coat of gloss varnish was applied to cover the decals and prepare the surfaces for a colour-wash application. For this purpose I used 'Wash for DAK Vehicles' from AK Interactive, further diluted with white spirit. The next step was oil paint application – I used light colours to highlight the horizontal surfaces, especially on the bonnet and roof. Small amounts of the paints were applied over the whole model and as a result I attained some interesting

And finally the 'pre-dusting'. Here it was used as the most important part of the final weathering because pigments application was reduced to minimum (you can observe it on the wheels mainly). The pictures of the real vehicles show that they are up to 95% covered with dust and a muddy coat appears rarely, so here the author decide to do the same.

The main dusting was done with mix of three different pigments. As you can see, it was applied on the windows to tone down the green shade but it also appeared on the horizontal surfaces. It was fixed with white spirit.

The road wheels were dusted and then wiped with a fingertip to show the patterns of the tyre. Note the dust accumulated inside the spare wheel.

Here and there the author added some shiny metallic spots; 6B pencil was the best tool to create them. Some additional elements are visible here. The IED device cable was cut from soldering wire. It is soft and easy to form over the shapes of the kit.

The machine gun was polished with gunmetal powder but the finishing touches were done with the pencil. Take a look at the additional armour plates and the tarpaulin sun-shade, which was tied to the metal bars with thin wire.

Some of the pictures taken in Afghanistan show fuel stains on the right side of the vehicle. From the modeller’s point of view they are nice addition to the final appearance of the kit.

patination. Looking at the pictures from Iraq and Afghanistan, I noticed those vehicles exhibit no paint scratches, so there was no reason to make them. However, some of them are filthy, especially close to the fuel filler. As part of the weathering stages, a mix of 'dirty' pigments was applied (Industrial City Dirt, Beach Sand and Fresh Wood). A couple of touches of a 6B pencil plus some small fuel stains topped off the final appearance of the kit.

FINISHING TOUCHES

My method to add realistic extra elements to a model is to look through the photos which were taken by soldiers in the action as they always show the true look of the subject. Some things seen in the photos are really strange and surprising but they build the individual character of finished model. Look at the gallery pictures of my RG-31 and find them! I would like to thank Piotr Wypiór, Imad Bouantoun and Federico Collada. ●

Eduard's razor-wire, FCModeltips road signs, scratchbuild plastic emergency stretcher, transport strap, chain and some thin wires were all added by the author. Note the traces of the wipers.

MODELLING PROJECTS 41ST ARMORED INFANTRY REGIMENT CAMOUFLAGE

dIORAMA IDEAS...

MISTAKEN IDENTITY It was good camouflage in the Pacific theatre, but in Europe, it was just a little too close to the SS’s uniforms, meaning that the ‘two-piece herringbone twill camouflage jungle suit’ was rapidly withdrawn...

T

his photo of Private Joseph De Freitos from Yonkers, New York, was taken between the 26th and 30th of July, 1944 at the Pont Brocard crossing on the River Soulle in Lower Normandy. The soldier was from the 41st Armored Infantry Regiment of the 2nd US Armored Division and is seen heating tins of rations on an individual stove, placed on a window sill for convenience. He wears the camouflaged ‘two-piece herringbone twill camouflage jungle suit’, an effective design, but one that was quickly abandoned due to possible (deadly) confusion with the camouflaged uniforms worn by the Waffen SS. The fabric was printed with three shades of green, plus one shade of brown. Private De Freitos could be replicated in miniature using this image to replicate the correct pattern of camouflage, plus books and online sources to ascertain the correct colours. The figure and architectural background could be displayed on one of Oakwood’s superb wooden plinths, shown right. ● Where to buy; Oakwood bases; www.oakwood-studios.co.uk

TERMINATOR RUSSIAN FIRE SUPPORT COMBAT VEHICLE www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:35 • MATERIALS; IM, WS • KIT NUMBER; 3636 The T-72-based ‘Terminator’ Russian Fire Support Combat Vehicle is a popular subject at the moment, with two new (and completely different) kits of it available in 1:35. Here, we have Zvezda’s offering, which is a complex production, with cleverly designed link-length tracks (separately moulded strips of guide horns) and masses of exterior detail. The futuristic and deadly-looking turret is a mouthwateringly complex affair with detail renditions of the twin guns and four missile launchers. MN

Great moulding quality, lots of detail and a mean-looking model will result Lots of parts mean a long build time, but that’s good!

The vehicle only reached the prototype stage, but the Flak 88-armed variant makes a terrific model subject. The gun builds up from a mass of parts and the vehicle comes with individuallymoulded, articulated tracks with tiny end-pins. An impressive boxful of kit with some nice display potential. MN

The ‘88 armed Versuchsflakwagen looks very interesting and Bronco’s kit is very well put together Tracks will need careful, methodical assembly and a light touch with the cement

Within the box is all that you need to build a very highly detailed 1:35 replica of this good-looking machine, thanks to the punchy moulded parts and incredibly fine raised and recessed detail. The tracks are individual link, but are of the glue-together type. No problem with this but if you want full articulation, you’ll need a set from Friulmodel. Photo-etched parts are included for the engine deck screens as well as braided copper wire. MN

VIETNAM SCOOTERS www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE; 1:48 • MATERIALS: IM, R, PE, PCM, WS • KIT NUMBER; 1197 Here we have Hasegawa’s A-4E/F Skyhawk plastic parts – which are superb – married to a large and exquisite decal sheet (printed by Cartograf), plus a modest but effective quantity of photoetched parts, resin ejector seat and die-cut canopy masking set. Six markings options are offered in this limited edition, ranging from 1965 through to 1971 from the Vietnam War theatre. This is an extremely appealing amalgamation of plastic, PE, resin and decals and well worth snatching up before they sell out – which this series often does, rather quickly. MN

An excellent kit, useful add-ons and stunning decals From experience when building Hasegawa’s release, the ‘hump-back’ can be a gappy fit to the upper fuselage, so a little filler might be needed

The kit has a complex, element by element ladder chassis and looks satisfyingly complex whilst looking quite straightforward to construct. And there are tons of chromed parts too! MN

PK CAMERAMAN NO.1, PANZERJÄGER IN THE WEST 1944

RZM PUBLISHING ISBN 978-0-9748389-6-0 £35 plus shipping from good bookshops and www.adhbooks.com (search ‘PK’) The Propaganda Kompanie (PK) photographers of the Second World War German military followed the Wehrmacht and Waffen SS around the world to all the theatres of operation in which they were involved and were thus exposed to a vast amount of combat action. They took over two million stillimages and miles of film footage for use in Goebbel’s extraordinarily effective propaganda campaign throughout the war, edited and censored to show only heroic imagery to the masses. In this ninety-six page, hard-backed volume (from 2013) the reader is treated to a large format (30x30cm) presentation, printed on high grade, matt-finished art paper that has been produced with a strong emphasis on photographic quality. This is just as well, because the photos are of astonishing quality and anything less than perfection would have been a travesty. The focus of this, the first volume, is on Panzerjäger-Abteilung 19(L) during a transfer from the town of Eeklo to new barracks in Zedelgem Belgium, February 1944. From a technical point of view, the PK photographer who documented this exercise (a fellow named Kurth) was clearly quite a talent as his photos are all well composed, in focus and perfectly exposed. The Marder IIIs he shot are from a 1. Kompanie platoon of four vehicles and are all in ‘as-new’ condition, showing the machines in great detail, revealing weld seams, casting textures, bolt, rivet and screw patterns, track and running gear, equipment-fit and much more. From the preceding descriptions you can appreciate how sharp and close-up the photos are. Also clearly visible in the images are areas of scratched-off paint (particularly the final photo in the book, showing a 2cm FlaK) and it’s fascinating to observe how this surface damage is limited to working areas and crew-access zones only, as well as where the fenders have rubbed up against something solid. The remaining painted surfaces are largely unblemished. The Marders are seen in a variety of settings; lined up tidily in the town square, rolling through countryside on un-made roads, driving practice in villages near the barracks and arriving in Zedelgem from Eeklo. All the machines are seen in plain Dunkelgelb, awaiting their combat camouflage and unit markings. As well as the extensive coverage of Marder IIIs and their crews, Kurth the PK photographer also captured Sd.Kfz.7s towing PaK40s and a re-chambered French Model 1897 7.5cm gun. Also shown are captured/modified Ford Eiffel cars that have been painted up in full three-colour schemes, towing 2cm FlaK 38s. Some wonderful modelling ideas are in evidence here. To sum up, this is an extraordinary record of German vehicular manoeuvres in the pre-D-Day months in a relatively quiet mainland Europe; the calm before the storm, as it were. The photos are an absolute gold mine of imagery and the not unreasonable purchase price makes this a ‘must-have’ for armour modellers. Very highly recommended. MN

The Editor’s Page... Modern scale modelling’s has lost its great visionary

In the August issue, I dedicated this page to Mr Francois Verlinden (and his huge influence on me) and it was a joy to do so. This month, I am dedicating ‘The Editor’s Page’ to another famous modeller, but in contrast to the August issue, it is with a heavy heart. Howard Sheperd ‘Shep’ Paine was quite possibly the most important modeller there has ever been; he took scale modelling to a new level of realism and pretty much invented the modern hobby. On August 1st this year, this inspirational man passed away at the much too young age of 69. Sheperd Paine (right, in the red jumper) was born in Berlin (to American parents) and raised in New England, USA. He earned a BA from the University of Chicago, Illinois and worked in the field of military history as a freelance writer and artist. His modelling work is the stuff of legend, influencing the modelling styles of thousands of modellers (Mr Verlinden included) around the world. Below, we can see some of his models, courtesy of www. sheperdpaine.com. Please take a moment to say a private ‘thank you’ to Shep, as it was his work and dedication to scale modelling that shaped our wonderful hobby into the form that we know today. See you again on October 15th! editor@tamiyamodelmagazine.com

"When you get into dioramas, you are creating a work of art. I don't use the word with a capital 'A' but you are creating a 3-D painting, and the satisfaction you get is much the same. In some ways, dioramas are so interesting because they combine so many elements in different forms: You are basically telling a story without words. It's like silent movies, except you don't have anybody moving” (Shep Paine to the Chicago Sun-Times)
