MODEL SHOW REPORT SHIZUOKA HOBBY SHOW 2015

THE YEAR OF THE

MOSQUITO! TMMI's Editor flies out to Tamiya headquarters in Japan, to see firsthand the new 1:32 DH Mosquito from Tamiya and to attend the Shizuoka Hobby Show, of course

T

he Shizuoka Hobby Show is the event where Tamiya launches the big new kit release of the year, for maximum impact. During my last visit to Japan in 2013, it was the 1:32 F4U-1 Corsair that took centre stage and this year, it was an even more impressive release in the form of the 1:32 DeHavilland Mosquito fighter-bomber Mk.VI. You can read more about this incredible model starting on page 20 this issue. Tamiya also have a 100% new 1:35 Panther ausf.D (extended preview starting on page 32), a 1:24 Honda S600 (a delightful little kit, to be reviewed next month), a 1:24 Toyoda AA civilian car, 1:48 Opel Blitz new-tool, an upgraded 1:12 Lotus Type 49B 1968 (with photo-etched parts), 1:700 Mogami Light Cruiser plus a host of other smaller models and products. Revell showed off their 1:24 BMW i8 and Porsche 918 Spyders and the test-shot sprues for Airfix's all-new 1:72 Ju87B-1 Stuka, Nakajima B5N2 'Kate', Armstrong Whitworth Whitley and F4F-4 kits were also on show. Ebbro announced a new 1:20 2015 McLaren-Honda MP-30, Aoshima showed off the their new 1:20 McLaren MP4-2 and accompanying detail parts, Bandai were very proud of their new line of Star Wars kits, Platz had a new-tool 1:72 F-15J Eagle on display, Studio27 showed off the new Theodore Racing car in 1:20 and Dragon had their 1:35 Conquerer tank kit on display. Over the next few pages, I have chosen a number of models that caught my eye and hopefully they'll appeal to you too! (A quick note; many models on show were built from test-shots and are subject to change in the final production releases). â—?

amiya's really big news this year has been in the public domain for a while; a 1:32 Mosquito fighterbomber! Rumours were rife of this release for many months before the official launch, but aside from a few sneak-previews, it was only until last month's Shizuoka Hobby Show and the presentation on the day before the show's opening to Tamiya's team of agents and selected members of the hobby media (TMMI!) that we got to see this jaw-dropping model in close up. And it is no exaggeration to say jaw-dropping; this was my reaction when I first saw the model and the closer I looked, the more detail became apparent. Two Merlin engines with super-thin cowlings attached with micro magnets, a complete cockpit with padded pilot's seat, photo-etched harnesses, multi-layer instrument panels featuring clear dial lenses, dial-face decals and photo-etched panel facias are highlights. The four Browning .303 machine guns in the nose are depicted in full with detailed renditions of the ammo hoppers and bullet feeds within the nose-cone and a lift-off cover allows this fabulous detail to be shown off after completion. The whole forward section of the fuselage is moulded individually, strongly suggesting the future release of a glassed-nose variant, although nothing is confirmed yet. Both Merlin engines are included and each are as exquisitely detailed as those in Tamiya's 1:32 Spitfire and Mustang models. The engines' bearers and firewalls feature some excellent detail, from plumbing and cabling to ancillaries, fire-extinguishers and more. The exhausts are multi-part designs and here we have a choice of types; five and two-outlet designs. The engine nacelles feature structural detail on their inner faces, supplemented by four photo-etched ribs on either side plus a hinge rail for the undercarriage doors, offering a neat attachment solution for the latter components.

KIT PREVIEW TAMIYA 1:32 DEHAVILLAND MOSQUITO FB MK.VI ● KIT NO.60326

The kit includes three figures; two seated crewmen for the cockpit plus a standing figure with one leg on the Mosquito’s crew ladder. All were created using laser-scanning technology for a very naturalistic posture and anatomy. Clear-moulded goggles are also provided.

V The main wing is supported

approximately halfway by an internal, box-section spar offering great strength, necessary for a large-scale model with a significant wingspan. None of the control surfaces are hinged, but they are poseable in neutral or drooped positions; check your references for the most authentic configuration for a parked aircraft.

'THOSE' TYRES

There has already been some discussion on the subject of the model's wheels/tyres. The main comments have been along the lines of “why mould them like that?”, and

“why not just mould them in rubber?”, in reference to their multi-part construction with individual segments to represent the tread face. When you look at the sheer size of the model's wheels, it becomes apparent that they are key focal points and need a little extra attention to be completely convincing. By moulding the treads in small sections, maximum detail can be preserved on the parts, with no hard-to-remove moulding seams that would be unavoidable in a flexible material. Also, the tyres come with the exact degree of weighted 'sag' on their

ground contact points, something that would be close to impossible to recreate in a perfectly round vinyl tyre. So there you go, the tyres are moulded in rigid kit plastic and they are much better for it! The Mosquito's distinctive main undercarriage system builds up into individual, hollow-centred legs and to ensure the flat-spotted tyres sit at the correct angle, a small jig is provided that fits into the hollow ends of the legs until the cement has dried. The jig is then removed and the legs slipped onto their mounting pegs which are moulded

integrally with the engine bearers, creating a solid and in-scale final appearance; very slick and well designed.

WEAPONS BAY

Moving into the bomb bay we find a mass of fantastic detail, including fuel cells, release rack for a pair of 500lb bombs and staggeringly comprehensive representation of the four Hispano 20mm cannons, their support frames, ammo hoppers and ammo feed channels. This all builds into a single module that simply drops into the forward cavity of the bomb bay. All this wonderful stuff would

Views of the cockpit parts reveal a superbly realistic instrument panel and optional radio fits.

be wasted if the model didn't offer poseable bomb bay doors, but here we are treated to multiple options, where the main and forward bay doors can be fixed open or closed, or a mixture of both positions. Several options are provided as standard; two types of propeller are included, early 'needle' and later 'paddle' designs, plus flame-damper covers for the exhaust, fixed by mini-magnets. Alternate lower engine cowlings are provided, including standard and elongated tropical air-intake filters. Under the wings, the modeller has the choice of fifty-gallon slipper tanks or 500lb bombs and as mentioned, the on/off engine cowlings are secured by tiny magnets which were embedded within the engines at an earlier stage.

LAST PARTS

Finally, we come to the canopy and this is a masterpiece of efficient kit design. The internal framework is first painted then assembled, part-by-part over the cockpit aperture, including the central and side ribs. Once the canopy has been masked off (using the supplied masking sheet), painted and the windscreen-wiper added, the unit then simply drops over

the cockpit. The finishing touches are the open/closed crew door and ladder, plus an excellent standing crewman. And the model is built! At the time of writing, we hadn't received the precise details of the markings that will be included with the kit, but we do know that 'Y-NA' in an overall metallic finish and 'F-EG' and ‘SM-A’ in green/grey camouflage are included amongst the decalling options. So, Tamiya's newest and arguably most exciting 1:32 aircraft kit yet takes the form of the 'Wooden Wonder'. The levels of detail easily match and perhaps surpass that of the previous kits in this range, making this a long-term build. Except, that is, for us at TMMI; we must get our test-shot built and reviewed as quickly as possible for the full-build feature! ● MODEL SPEC SCALE; 1:32 MATERIALS: IM, PE, PC, MM, WS AVAILABILITY; Tamiya models are widely available from good model shops. Imported and distributed by The Hobby Company Limited www.hobbyco.net TMMI’s OPINION? A staggeringly well-detailed kit of this iconic WW2 British fighter-bomber. Detail is evident everywhere and it’s no quickbuild, but it’s not designed to be! A beautiful model and one that will reward the patient builder.

The decal sheet provides three options; one overall silver plus two camouflaged machines. All markings are impeccably printed.

HANG ON LADS,

I’VE GOT AN

IDEA

If you were able to take a very famous scene from an iconic film and convert it into RC, we doubt that even some film companies would be able to do a better job than Richard Vyse did with his Harrington Legionnaire replica coach. Report and photography John Weston

ichard Vyse does The Italian Job and quite frankly, it’s fantastico! There is a very good chance that you will not happen upon a greater, more nostalgic and more unique example of an RC replica than this. The Harrington Legionnaire Coach, built by Thomas Harrington Ltd in Hove between 1963 and 1965 is without doubt, the most iconic coach in movie history. There aren’t too many ‘movie coaches’ around so it is safe to say that the Legionnaire is actually one of the most best known vehicles in movie history. It is instantly recognisable to generations from the classic 1969 film, The Italian Job, which starred Michael Caine (with timeless quotes galore) leading a gang of rogues to Turin to steal $4 million worth of gold bullion. The transportation of the stolen gold out of the city prompted one of the most memorable and beloved movie car chases. Three Mini Coopers racing the gold out of Turin and then boarding the coach via ramps whilst in transit. The Minis are then unceremoniously dumped from the coach over the Italian Alps one by one and the ultimate movie cliffhanger then ensued. An over exuberant driver (Big William, played by Harry Baird) manages to overcook it and the film concludes with the coach balanced precariously on a cliff edge...

MI3 BASED

Richard’s radio controlled replica of the famous coach is outstanding. An impromptu video of three Tamiya Minis boarding the coach during the 'Tamiya Takeover' event at Radshape RC has gone viral on YouTube and deservedly so. We met with Richard to get the lowdown on his epic creation. Rich is a club racer at Kettering Model Car Club in the UK and his weapon of choice is a Schumacher Mi3. He is also a keen and skilled modeller. The journey began three years ago when Rich built an articulated lorry out of a Losi XXX-S touring car chassis for a fun night at KMCC and two club members drove Tamiya Minis into the back of it. Somebody played The Italian Job’s classic theme song 'Get a Bloomin’ Move on' over the PA system and the seed was sewn; 'Hang on lads. I’ve got an idea!' In 2012, Rich took a basic (Mk.1) version of the coach to the Japan Auto Extravaganza show at Wicksteed Park in Northants and the display was so well-received that he drew up some blueprints of the Harrington Legionnaire and produced an as close to scale as possible 1:10 (Mk.2) version. The coach is actually 1:10.5 as this will accept three Tamiya M-Chassis Minis on-board. It's a Tamiya TL-01 rear-end (the TL-01 4WD

V on-road chassis ran from

1997 to 2002) running duallies (dual wheels on each side) to achieve that extra width. The front-end is constructed of another two widened TL-01 chassis. There is a servo per axle to attain the differential for the dual axle steering. Connecting the front and rear is a twin-deck, homemade aluminium chassis. The motor is a brushed 55-turn Axial AM55 and it is controlled by an M.troniks Viper Rv11. On board there are four batteries set-up as follows: •One 7.4V 6000mAh LiPo to power the motor •One 12V for sound and interior lights •One 4.8V pack for the

receiver •One 3.6V for the headlights A JR Propo X2610 2.4GHx six-channel radio system controls the coach and operates the eight servos: •Two 10kg units operate the ramp •Two standard servos operate the rear doors •Two standard servos operate the steering wheel to make Big William move •One micro servo operates William’s head independently •One micro servo operates the passenger door. The tyres are 100mm items from an radio controlled aircraft and the wheel rims are standard sized touring car parts. Regular Tamiya TL-01 stock

shocks are used with V friction hard Schumacher springs. Big William is made from a 'pound-shop' toy soldier doll and Rich dressed him in some offcuts from an old pair of his jeans. The coach body is made from 6mm Depron closed cell polystyrene sheet to keep weight down, but it still weighs 10kg without the Minis on-board! Everything was built on a tiny budget, mostly from what Rich had around and modified to suit.

MK.3

Richard’s plans for a third version of the coach are underway. The main improvements will be to the ramp and body and the Mk.3 ramp will slide

down rather than concertina and the brushed paint job will be replaced with two-pack spray paint. To coincide with a new coach, there will be three replica Minis using Tamiya’s M-05 chassis with shells donated by Radshape RC and a bullion truck modelled by John Willetts. A new video will then be shot, all going well, in April/May 2015.

THANK YOU

We would like to thank Richard (who is also known as Hangonlads Ivegotanidea) for taking the time to meet up and with us for this article on one awesome coach. You just have to check out the video with cameras fitted inside the coach and on the Minis to see just what a fantastic all round job it is... Roll on the next video! ●

e haven't had a radio controlled tank build in TMMI for quite some time and with the release of the Japan Ground Self Defence Force Type 10 MBT, I thought it was high time that this deficit was addressed. The Type 10 is the most modern tank in the world and so it's entirely fitting that Tamiya should release this model with all the bells and whistles of the 'Full-Option' series. As well as the main driving controls, the model features a rotating turret, motorised main gun barrel, gun firing action with recoil, engine, main gun and machine gun sounds plus a full complement of lighting, front and rear. It's a complex and spectacular production that squeezes in a lot of workings within its narrow hull and turret and it begs to have a blow-by-blow treatment of the assembly sequence in TMMI, so that's just what I decided to do. I intend to follow the instructions pretty much to the letter, although it's inevitable that I'll deviate at some point when I chose to! I started with the gearbox and I wanted to document its construction, so that newcomers to this type of model will have a secondary, photographic guide to assembly to read alongside the impeccable instructions. I took a lot of photos and managed to edit them down to the sixty or so you see here; there are that many steps to building the gearbox alone! As I progress I will bring you further articles on building this magnificent model, culminating in the painting and weathering stages, so please keep reading! TMMI 237 July 2015

www.migjimenez.com Some new acrylic paint sets are on release from Mig Jimenez's 'AMMO' product line and as always from this manufacturer, they are imaginative and very useful for the armour modeller. An example of this is 'Factory German Colors' which includes three shades (in 17ml bottles) to simulate red-lead oxide primer and dark grey high-temperature paint for the gun barrel. Set ‘1944-45’ contains three key colours for this period; Dunkelgelb, Schokobraun, Resedagrün. Also new are two, six-colour paint sets for modern armour subjects. Novorossiya (Putin's take on 'New Russia’) and Ukrainian ATO colours. These sets might all be a little 'too soon' for some, but they are interesting nonetheless. FULL-BUILD: COMPETITION MOTORCYCLE HASEGAWA 1:12 HONDA RS250RW TEAM PTT â—? ITEM NO. HSGS1501

PERFECT P Steeve Ingels applies his special modelling magic to Hasegawa's 1:12 Honda RS250RW 'Team PTT' and makes extensive use of Zero Paints colours

T

he Honda RS250RW is the first motorcycle kit produced by Hasegawa. The kit consists of over 140 parts spread over three large sprues, plus tyres, vinyl tubing (black and clear) in different diameters, a bag containing screws, spring, etc., and beautiful sheet of decals. I was pleasantly surprised by the overall quality of the kit; everything is designed for maximum detail and nothing is missing, so model of a high standard can be built out-of-the-box. Take for example

the front fork, which is provided with its diving sensor, plus screws for fixing the wheels hidden behind plastic bolts. The engine is hyper-detailed with electronic housings in all the right places.

ENGINE AND FRAME

The engine was built into sub-assemblies in order to ease the painting stages. The block is metallic-grey colour and for this I utilised Zero Paints ZP-7156. The details were then highlighted using a dark-coloured enamel paint wash. Once

all the sub-assemblies of the engine were painted, I could proceed to assembly. The small, moulded-in pegs to anchor the vinyl tubes were removed and 0.4mm diameter holes were carefully drilled in their location points. This allowed me to utilise fine electrical wire which is thinner and more realistic than the vinyl tubing provided in the kit box. The framework was assembled according to the instructions, however, I would advise you to glue on the fairing fasteners at this stage. Once the cement

T PTT! In this close-up, we can see the small touches of colour and carbon-fibre decalling. The ignition cables are made of fine blue wire, as in reality.

Focusing on the ‘flight deck’ of the bike, careful painting and the application of a colour-wash were enough to create a touch of realism. Screws were enhanced using Top Studio photo-etched screwheads.

was dry and the joints sanded, the frame received an undercoat of acrylic paint black followed by several very fine layers of Zero Paints Extra Fine Metallic (ZP-4010). The advantage of this paint is that it is relatively solid and stands up well to manipulation. The swing arm was then assembled, sanded and given an undercoat before being painted dark aluminium. Once the paint was dry, I could apply the sponsors’ decals, fixed with Microsol setting solutions.

U

The engine and other mechanical parts are clearly visible after fitting the fairing, so you must not neglect the assembly steps and painting thinking that everything will be hidden when assembled!

FAIRING V THE Upon its release, I immediately decided

to use the new decal sheet from Studio27. Unfortunately, the application of this sheet was not easy. I prepared the fairing parts in my usual way, removing the moulding lines and rivets, then drilling 0.5mm holes so I could use new, steel rivets from Top Studio instead. Above all, I extensively test-fitted the fairing parts on the bike to visualise the general shape. I then applied a white acrylic undercoat and let it dry for ten minutes under a heat lamp. Over this I applied Bright White from Zero Paints (ZP-1026), similar Tamiya TS-26. I let the pieces rest for a week before starting the application of the decals. Normally, I use decals straight from the sheet, even the large ones and I usually then paint

48 July 2015 TMMI 237

p 46-53 Honda RS250RW 237.indd 48

touch-ups at the decals’ joints. Except that in this case, this was not possible! The decals do not just ‘fall’ onto the kit and it’s essential to paint the big red and blue stripes. Once the decals were on (not without difficulty and some colourful language) the parts were varnished with two-component clear lacquer from Zero Paints (ZP-3006). To do this, I applied three very light layers, followed ten minutes later by a ‘wet’ layer. I then let all parts dry for one week, until the varnish had hardened

‘to the core’. I then sanded and polished the parts to remove excess thickness caused by the decals below, then applied a final wet coat of varnish.

U

The photos show the carbon fibre-effect decalling that was used to cover the inside of the fairing; better than just plain black paint!

After applying Zero Paints ZP-4010 (aluminium shade), the weld lines were masked off and initial patination was applied using India ink and various metallic shades from Zero Paints; Titanium Gold ZP-7031 and Silver ZP-7032.

Weld lines were reworked in a brighter tone (Vallejo Chrome 71064) and a black colour-wash applied to enhance the effect even more.

Further work with India ink using a very fine brush allows you to play more with the subtleties, imitating the effects of hot metal during welding.

The final touch was created with a few light strokes of Zero Paints ‘Smoke’ (ZP-1132) by brush. Browsing the web, we can see that the metal in the vicinity of the welds is darker. The author intentionally finished the exhaust with high contrast to imitate this effect.

A spread of sub-assemblies for the next stage of construction. Note the pipework and cables, pre-installed on the radiator and headset.

The Hasegawa sponsors' decals can be seen here, as well as the carbon-fibre decalled brace and its photo-etched rivets.

The kit's radiator was painted with Zero Paints Aluminum (ZP-4010) and the hose-clamps were simulated using very thin strips of self-adhesive aluminium tape. Note the data-decal on the filler cap.

The damper was painted in various metallic shades from Zero Paints (ZP-4010 and ZP-7056) and a dark colour-wash was also applied to emphasize the details. The spring received some translucent coats of Vallejo Red (70934).

The airbox and carburettors were painted according to the instructions, the author adding textured aluminium foil from a pack of cigarettes to cover the airbox. This paper was cut to size and fixed with wood glue diluted with water.

DETAILS V FINAL Once I’d completed the large

sub-assemblies, it remained only to prepare the small details before final assembly. The exhausts received an undercoat of black Vallejo Acrylic followed by a base coat of ‘Aluminum’ by Zero Paints (ZP-4010). Weld lines were masked and the exhaust then received its patina by applying various metallic colours, as well as Indian ink. Don’t forget to wrap the forward section of the exhaust with a thin strip of adhesive aluminium tape. After applying the decals, I added photo-etched rivets from Top Studio for a more realistic appearance. The steering damper was improved by replacing its

The chain was re-worked with a mini drill to give the impression of a 'link by link' assembly, a very effective transformation.

The dial block was improved by just adding some thin tubing (0.4mm) from Model Factory Hiro. (hiroboy.com) Some parts were covered with carbon-fibre decal too.

Eduard’s new Spitfire Mk.VIII is on release and already they have resin/brass upgrade sets for it! This pack provides a Merlin engine and all its bearers, firewall, gearbox, exhausts, ancillaries and ultra thin cowlings. A lot of work to put it to use, but very fine detail.

The clutch bell received a layer of Zero Paints ZP-4010 Aluminum. Bolts for the clutch springs were masked off for the rest of the painting process.

After spraying a metallic grey colour (ZP-7156) on the clutch, it was partly sealed off with liquid mask (the green material seen above and above left).

A lighter shade of metallic silver was then dusted on by airbrush. After removing the masking, a colour-wash was applied to enhance the detail.

The fork was fully assembled before being secured to the frame of the bike. The author added some details like the screwheads on the front fender and lower areas. The dip tubes were replaced with brass parts by Top Studio. The author’s only regret was not having photo-etched brake discs. Brake lines and electronic cables were simulated with electrical wire, bought in a electronics accessory store.

The motor was first primed with a metallic grey by Zero Paints (ZP-7056) and the details touched in by brush. A colour-wash was applied to bring out the detail.

V piston with a metal rod.

The entire dial-module was assembled and painted out of the box, I just added fine tubing and covered some parts in carbon-fibre decal. Once all the sub-assemblies were ready, I proceeded, not without a certain degree of pleasure, to the final assembly. I was very careful not to break anything in the final fixing of the fairing, but apart from this delicate moment, the rest of the installation speaks for itself.

In this photo you can see the fairing parts which have been given the first 'wet' layer of two-part varnish from Zero Paints (ZP-3006). It's important to lightly sand the finish to remove excess thickness caused by the decals.

IN CONCLUSION

Despite some difficulties during decalling, this kit was very pleasant to build. I also have a second model, accompanied by several Top Studio sets to push it to the maximum level of realism. A future article, who knows? â—?

In these images, carbon-fibre decalling can be seen on the inside of the fairing. In the lower cowling, we can see three rectangles of aluminium foil, added to simulate patches of thermal insulation. The fuel tank is the most difficult part to 'decorate', the author having to alternate between Studio27 decals and Zero Paints (ZP-1026 and ZP-7004) to arrive at a convincing appearance. The bottom of the tank was painted in an aluminium colour (ZP-4010).

This is the final result after the clear-coating stages. The author added photo-etched screwheads and rivets by Top Studio.

MODELLING PROJECTS POST D-DAY VEHICLE DUMP

dIORAMA IDEAS...

BONEYARD BONANZA

Although they appear to be just fields full of wrecked vehicles and scrap metal (which indeed they are!), wartime vehicle dumps also offer some creative modelling ideas

W

artime vehicle dumps offer a wonderful opportunity for armour modellers as they can contain a wide variety of machinery from main battle tanks to trucks and trailers, and they can be large or small, semi-organised or complete chaos. In this scene from the summer of 1944, somewhere in France, we can see an RSO tractor to the left, a quirky-looking Lanz tractor in the foreground, a Renault UE tankette to the right plus a wide variety of trucks of differing ages and applications. In the centre, we can see a small staff car – marked up with an impromptu Allied white star – being driven by a US serviceman, so we can assume that this particular dump is in American hands. ●

The RSO is available from both Italeri (and older but still excellent model) and also a newer model from Dragon, both in 1:35. Tamiya make the UE tractor of course and the trucks could be sourced from ICM, Tamiya, Italeri and others. Happy modelling! KIT PREVIEW TAMIYA 1:35 GERMAN MEDIUM TANK PANZERKAMPFWAGEN V PANTHER AUSF.D ● KIT NO.35345

TAMIYA'S ALL-NEW CITADEL 'D' IN 1:35 Tamiya's new-tool Panther ausf.D packs in some very attractive features and a very accurate outline

T

he latest addition to Tamiya's 1:35 Military Miniature Series depicts the Panther ausfuhrung D, the first ever 1:35 kit by Tamiya of this variant. The Panther ausf.D was the initial version of the tank; 842 were manufactured between January and September 1943. The tank was created to combat the highly effective Soviet T-34 and made use of sloped armour in its hull, giving a significantly higher degree of protection than vertical plating. The potent L/70 7.5cm gun (rumoured to have knocked out a T-34 at 3km) was the Panther's main armament. As things turned out, development of the Panther was rushed as the German situation worsened, leading to severe reliability problems in engagements such as the Battle of Kursk in July 1943. Despite that, it proved highly capable, both offensively and defensively.

AN ALL NEW D

Tamiya's kit is completely newly-tooled and captures the profile of the Panther Ausf.D; Tamiya's designers studied a real Panther D in the Netherlands to ensure a high level of accuracy. The model comes with Ausf.D-specific features such as smoke dischargers and rear panel layout with twin exhaust stacks and a horizontally-mounted jack. The drum-cupola is a highly detailed structure and features a movable hatch for the commander. On the engine deck, we have radiator and fan inserts that sit just below the deck grilles to give the impression that full cooling equipment lies inside; photo-etched mesh screens are included and they are formed from a malleable metal that will allow the modeller to add dents and 'sags', replicating where the crew have walked across. The differing textures of the real tank – cast iron mantlet and steel armour plate – are

accurately depicted on the moulded kit parts.

TRACK OPTIONS

The tracks, as they come in the box, are the one-piece, flexible type and are the best of their kind. If the modeller chooses to fit the schurzen side-armour (moulded in one-piece per side) the upper runs will be hidden, so inducing a realistic degree of 'sag' won't be such an issue. Tamiya have, however, created a new set of articulated, individual link tracks in injectionmoulded polystyrene and will allow the modeller to create the distinctive form of the Panther's upper track runs. Another 'aftermarket' release for the new Panther is an aluminium gun barrel set, which also comes with a detailed breech and internal mechanism to start off the turret's inner detailing. If you choose not to buy this item, the kit's standard barrel is a seam-free,

one-piece moulding that will do the job very well (muzzle brake parts are separately moulded). Other attractive features include openable hatches on the model (excluding small-arms port), plus gun a movable travel lock and two crew figures. Three markings-options (in waterslide decal form) are included for units that took part in 'Operation Citadel', the 1943 Battle of Kursk. ● MODEL SPEC SCALE; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:200 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . Some might say “not another 1:35 Panther” but this is an important addition to Tamiya’s Military Miniatures Series and is also a highly accurate, modern and easy to build model.

02/06/2015 11:59

The workable nature of the new tracks can be seen here. The ejector-pin marks will be easy enough to conceal by filling and sanding flush.

Tamiya have created this gun breech and alloy barrel set (above left) for the new Panther kit. Also launched for the new ausf.D is this set of individual-link, articulated tracks. The centre parts are moulded with accurate guide-horns. Both sets are available to buy separately.

This kit is 100% new and uses high tech moulding technology to incorporate very refined detail but still keep the parts-count at a sensible level. A full-build article on the kit will appear in TMMI as soon as page-space becomes available!

Tamiya’s team of model builders performed a partial cut-away of the turret to show off the rather splendid gun breech detail, which features a workable gear mechanism. All the main hatches are moveable, including the turret access hatch. The tool rack is particularly well done.

Views of the kit sprues reveal fantastic detail, cast-steel texture on the mantlet and rolled steel texture on the turret. The radiator and engine intakes are represented by inserts that sit beneath the engine deck’s main grilles. The full-figure is sculpted in an excellent action pose.

LUFTFAHRTVERLAGSTART • ISBN 978-3-941437-25-8 www.luftfahrtverlag-start.de The latest in this fascinating series of books on WW2 Germany’s ‘silent service’ brings us another collection of previously unpublished wartime images of U-boats and their crews. In Edition 12, we are presented with atmospheric photographs of the Typ VIIB, VIIC, IXC (good for those building Revell’s kit), electric boats, conning towers, colour photos of U-Flottille, U-249 alongside HMS Northlyn during the submarine’s capture (beautifully clear photos) and other very sharp shots of U-boats captured and moored in England. The book is finished off with a fascinating photo-story on the Type XVII boats U-1406 and U-1407, making the perfect end to another fantastic volume from this German publisher. As with previous editions, No.12 is printed on top quality gloss paper which allows the wartime images to really shine. The text is in German and English and the captions are very detailed so the reader can gain a real insight into the photos they are looking at. Highly recommended. MN

VOLKER RUFF ISBN 978-3-9816908-0-4 www.panzerwrecks.com New in Panzerwrecks’ extensive catalogue of their own titles and other imprints comes volume 1 of Volker Ruff’s 128-page hardback production on the Tigers of the Schwere Panzerabteilung 501. There will be nine more volumes in this series, documenting Germany’s heavy tank battalions 1942 to 1945, so make some space on your bookshelf as you’ll be unable to resist collecting them all! The book contains over 150 black and white images, almost all of which are of the Tiger I (the Tiger II just sneaks in on the final pages). We begin with the crews taking on their new tanks at Fallingbostel in Germany (machines in overall Panzergrau with their narrow transporttracks fitted) and we then move quickly on to Tunisia at the end of 1942 where the mighty Tiger I was initially deployed. Some excellent shots are presented here, with some very useful references for modellers. This chapter is generously stocked with photos and is one of the best representations of the Tiger I’s exploits in North Africa I have seen in print. Following this we move a long distance to the north and east where the temperature drops to sub-zero; the second extensive section covers the 501 in Russian theatre of operations. Again, we have some fascinating photographs of the zimmerited tanks in their tatty winter camouflage. Wonderfully atmospheric images and perfect refs for modellers and dioramists. Captions throughout are informative and interesting. As mentioned, the last few pages cover the introduction of the Tiger II and we have some tantalising images of the big beast; a hint of what’s to come in future volumes. Production values are high, with good quality, glossy art paper and a clean layout. We can’t wait to see the rest of the series! Highly recommended. MN

The Editor’s Page... So many new kits to preview...

T

his issue is slightly different to the regular format of TMMI in that I have turned much of it over to 'Kit Previews' plus an extended show-report from the last month's Shizuoka Hobby Show. I felt that doing this was worthwhile as Tamiya choose this annual event to unveil the key products for the first half of the year and there was one major model that really deserved a big splash – the 1:32 Mosquito of course! But there were also some other appealing releases on the Tamiya booth, perhaps slightly overshadowed by the big balsa bomber and they needed space too. On show were Tamiya’s allnew Panther ausf.D (the company’s first ever kit of this variant in 1:35), an upgraded 1:700 USS Saratoga, the very cute Honda S600 in 1:35, the oddball but cool 1:24 Toyoda (yes, with a ‘D’) AA saloon car, new-tool Opel Blitz in 1:48 and perhaps my biggest thrill, the classic upgraded 1:12 Lotus Type 49B 1968 kit, now with photo-etched parts, metal engine trumpets, new decals, masking sheet and fabric seat harness (below). I had a very productive trip to Shizuoka this year, having the privilege to spend some time with Mr Shunsaku Tamiya, the company's President (right), to discuss new kit releases and express my own opinions on what models I think Tamiya should create! My list is always long but carefully chosen, so you never know... I also got to spend time with friends in Shizuoka and Tokyo and checked out some of the city's jaw-dropping model shops in the Akihabara district. So, I hope you enjoyed this preview-heavy edition of TMMI, we will return to more full-build articles in coming issues, particularly on that Mosquito! See you again on July 16th! editor@tamiyamodelmagazine.com

Tamiya Redefine Detail Tamiya's stunning new Mosquito has revealed staggering attention to detail and levels of realism never seen before in any scale. To ensure that all this detail is maximised for the modeller the UK versions will include an extra sprue with clear engine parts. • Highly-detailed cockpit, plus depiction of four machine guns complete with ammo cases and belts • The Merlin engines are breathtakingly recreated, including depictions of the supercharger. Just like on the real Mosquito, the engine mount and landing gear struts are integrated • Tail wheel mud guard and strut are depicted. Left and right sides of horizontal stabilizer are part of the same piece, as on the actual aircraft • Adjustable flaps • Choose open or closed bomb bay. 20mm auto cannons and two 500lb bomb parts are found inside • The model can be assembled with exhausts uncovered or covered • Detailed 4-piece engine cowling offers a selection of standard or longer intake-fitted tropical filter parts • Features parts recreating propellers with early variant slim line blades or wider paddle type blades • Paintable tires use assembly tread sections and capture compression caused by plane weight • Etch detail parts, markings for 3 versions and 3 crewmen: Pilot, Navigator and Crewman • Extraordinary levels of detail on canopy parts • Engine covers fitter with magnets to allow ease of removal to expose engine detail
