Tamiya Redefine Detail Tamiya's stunning new Mosquito has revealed staggering attention to detail and levels of realism never seen before in any scale. To ensure that all this detail is maximised for the modeller the UK versions will include an extra sprue with clear engine parts. • Highly-detailed cockpit, plus depiction of four machine guns complete with ammo cases and belts • The Merlin engines are breathtakingly recreated, including depictions of the supercharger. Just like on the real Mosquito, the engine mount and landing gear struts are integrated • Tail wheel mud guard and strut are depicted. Left and right sides of horizontal stabilizer are part of the same piece, as on the actual aircraft • Adjustable flaps • Choose open or closed bomb bay. 20mm auto cannons and two 500lb bomb parts are found inside • The model can be assembled with exhausts uncovered or covered • Detailed 4-piece engine cowling offers a selection of standard or longer intake-fitted tropical filter parts • Features parts recreating propellers with early variant slim line blades or wider paddle type blades • Paintable tires use assembly tread sections and capture compression caused by plane weight • Etch detail parts, markings for 3 versions and 3 crewmen: Pilot, Navigator and Crewman • Extraordinary levels of detail on canopy parts • Engine covers fitter with magnets to allow ease of removal to expose engine detail

ollowing on from last issue's exhaustive look at the assembly of the Type 10's gearbox, it is now time to fit the model's twin 540 electric motors. The last RC tank I built used a pair of 380 motors which are quite a bit smaller than the mighty 540s, but perfectly adequate in terms of torque and flat-out power. The use of 540s suggests that a little extra is needed for this vehicle, perhaps because it's a modern tank that has a fair lick of speed (nearly 44mph, both forward and reverse) and two big motors are needed to achieve this.

motor are different in size and it's essential that they are installed the correct way around within the gearbox. Grub screws hold the pinions in place and it's wise to use a little thread lock on them so they stay put. Don't forget the insulator plates (BA30 x2) before you screw on the mounts (G5 x2). That's the gearbox done then, and it can be put to one side for installation a little later on. Attention was now turned to the hull and its many fittings. The main structure is pressed from thick aluminium sheet and exhibits great precision; all holes are pre-drilled and where needed, some are threaded to take machine screws. No preparation is needed, but I chose to 'rough up' the areas to be primed/painted using a coarse sanding stick to create a ‘keyed’ surface texture. The first items to be fitted were the suspension arms' bump-stops which are secured with a single screw each, turned with an Allen key. This was a bit of a fiddle, but at least the injection-mouldings are very securely mounted. Next up are the three, cylindrical aluminium engine mounts, which are screwed in place from below. Again, thread lock is recommended here to ensure they won't work loose.

ELECTRIC MOTORS

One of the first things to do when handling the motors is to check for metallic debris clinging to them. After having opened many sprue bags already, there were a fair number of discarded staples on my workbench, despite my attempts to keep things tidy. These, being steel, were immediately attracted to the powerful magnets inside the motors and they can be tricky to spot if they've been taken inside the motors' cans; an errant staple is the surest way to bring a 540 to a halt and maybe damage it irreparably. WHEELS AND RUNNING GEAR

The roadwheels are moulded in four parts; two wheel discs and two outer halves of their rims. These are formed from ABS plastic for durability and I found that my Mr Cement Deluxe and Mr Cement S bonded the parts

perfectly. The 'Deluxe' is slightly thicker than the 'S' and as such, has a better 'linger' time when applied to the model part, ideal for this specific task. The wheels rotate on a small steel shaft supported by two bronze bearings, all held in place on the swingarm by a single screw that is

inserted through the lower end of the arm and into the wheel from behind. Once again, threadlock is highly recommended here to keep the wheels in place as they cross rough terrain. There's an inevitable glue-seam running around the periphery of each

wheel, so once the cement had fully dried, I used my coarse sanding stick again to remove this and also impart a slightly worn surface to the tyres. Painting the running gear will require a little planning to make it as efficient as possible, while protecting

17

22

27

the running areas from paint as much as possible. I chose to build up the wheels, fit their bearings and shafts and screw them to the swingarms, but leaving off the grease and threadlock, as I wanted to remove the wheels after the main camouflage colours were on, so I could hand-paint the two

'rubber' tyres on each unit. This would require each wheel to be mounted on a temporary handle to allow me full access while painting. So that's as far as I got this month. I hope to make a lot more progress on this in-depth build next time! l

en Tyrrell first appeared in Formula 1 in 1968, with Matra. This association quickly found success and the 'Tyrrell Racing Organization' won three Grands Prix in 1968 with another famous Scotsman, Sir Jackie Stewart. In 1969, the Drivers' Championship was taken with six Grands Prix. Paradoxically, Matra, the chassis provider, won the World Championship with a Ford DFV V8 engine. The following year, while Matra Sports tried to impose its V12 engine on the Ockham, Surrey-based

team, Ken Tyrrell decided to manufacture his own chassis and the Tyrrell 001 took to the track in 1970. In 1971, the technical director, Derek Gardner changed chassis 001; 002 for François Cevert and 003 for Jackie Stewart. The difference between versions 002 and 003 was the length; 002 was longer for François Cevert. In 1971 the Tyrrell 003 dominated its competitors, winning seven out of eleven Grands Prix, giving Stewart his second world title. A quick note for film-fans; the Tyrrell 003 was immortalized in Roman

Polanski's documentary 'Weekend of a Champion' shot at the 1971 Monaco GP. The Tyrrell 003 – if not the most stylish of F1 car – is certainly legendary.

EBBRO SPOILS US!

Like the kits that preceded, Ebbro's Tyrrell 003 is fully detailed inside and out and it's possible to represent it either on trestles or in race configuration. The chassis is moulded in two parts and riveting can be seen on the entire chassis. Not being a rivet counter, I judged that their quantity and positions were correct... Because of

this, I took my time when sanding the junctions of the two chassis halves to avoid damaging the riveting. Also, note the large marks left by the ejector-pins on the forward cockpit floor; I filled these with Tamiya putty before sanding them flush. The bonding of the half-frame wasn't complicated but it is best assisted with the use of clamps while the Tamiya liquid cement took effect. I drilled two 0.3mm holes on each side of the cockpit to receive cable-ties for the cables that lead to the backs of the dials. Furthermore,

The question arose in particular when I was trying to find out which parts of the cockpit were painted and which should remain natural metal.

The exhausts are pretty tricky to assemble but their fitment is easily achieved between the engine and the gearbox. The brake discs were weathered with Humbrol Polished Steel.

The marriage of engine and chassis was very easy. Fixing is by means of a simple screw, which makes it all very rigid.

LOOK BACKWARD V AOne of the nicest pieces of

the kit are the rear-view mirror bases. Those of Jackie Stewart's car, and only his, are mounted on tripods formed from of metal rods. Ebbro innovated by providing these tripods in the form of pre-soldered metal units. The tripods are both very thin and very solid. However, the ends of the rods are bent, which complicates their placement on the body and there are no pads inside, so the holes offer no support for the rods. So, I started by straightening the stems and I applied Tamiya masking tape inside the body to serve as an interim base (right). The rods were fixed with cyanoacrylate glue, applying around the holes in the bodywork.

The complex rear suspension includes a large number of chrome bars. The cooling ducts are in place along the lower sides of the body.

Tamiya tape was positioned within the body to permit bonding of the mirror tripods, acting as a support whilst gluing.

FINISHES AND CONCLUSION The fitting of the body was impeded by the electrical wires that I added to the dials, so unfortunately I had to remove them so the body would properly snap into place. The wheels were then prepared. Ebbro provides stunning tyres with pre-applied sidewall markings, but the tyres’ surfaces were a little too

clean, so they were lightly sanded. During this process I found that the tyre material was quite hard and could be ‘roughed up’ without problems. To fit the wheels, I slightly chamfered the stub-axles within the wheels so that they fitted better into the polycap rings, pre-installed inside the hubs. The last assembly to perform is that of the rear wing to

the gearbox. The bonding method here was to cement the rear wing on part ‘H16’ with 'Colla 21' cyanoacrylate. As this glue does not harden immediately, it left me a little time to position parts ‘H36’ and ‘H37’. The model's assembly ended with the establishment of the nose, which simply snaps onto the frame without being hindered by

the front radiator. In this kit, Ebbro have managed to authentically represent the complexities of a Formula 1 car in a reasonably easy to build 1:20 model kit. Assembly ran smoothly from start to finish and the final effect is very realistic. My Tyrrell 003 can now sit proudly alongside the Lotus World Champions, already issued by Ebbro! ●

PEACE v. WAR T

A US Army M5A1 in a poignant WW2 scene

his is a very well-known photograph of a US Army M5A1 Light Tank, C-Company, 33rd Armored Regiment (3rd Armored Division) and it looks like the photographer waited for the vehicle to appear from behind the bullet-hole ridden wall, to ‘pose’ it with the doll in the foreground. From a cynic’s point of view, there’s also a good chance that the doll was placed on the stone block too (in the style of ‘Drop The Dead Donkey’ for our UK readers), but this doesn’t detract from the image’s power. ●

In kit form Tamiya’s ageing but easy to build 1:35 model could be used to recreate this scene and AFV Club’s more recent (and more complex) release would be ideal too. The wall could be sourced from aftermarket sets or it wouldn’t be too difficult to make it from scratch, using foam-board or plaster. Plus Model offer a huge range of diorama accessories and amongst the range you’ll find 1:35 ‘Toys I’ (214) and ‘Toys II’ (219) which both contain items such as teddy bears, a doll and other toys that would work in this context. Matt Kirk builds AFV Club's recently issued 1:35 kit of the IDF Sho't Kal Gimel, his favourite tank!

T

his particular variant of the IDF Centurion is possibly my favourite tank! A bold statement I know, but when AFV Club announced the release of a Sho't Kal Gimel ('Whip' Type C, in Hebrew) I was very excited. The Gimel mainly differs from the earlier Alef and Beth tanks by the obvious fitment of a set of Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) blocks to the hull and turret. There were also changes to the stowage and other fitted equipment, plus new armoured covers for the extended exhausts on the rear engine deck. This new setup was first used in combat during the 1982 Lebanon War against the Syrian army and Palestinian militias. Anyone who has built any of AFV Club's previous Centurions will know what detailed and impressive kits they are. Filled with a wealth of detail and tiny parts, these are not kits that just fall together like, say, a Tamiya product; they need some finessing, as in a Dragon or Hobbyboss model. It’s pretty much a multimedia affair, with styrene, soft vinyl parts, brass-etch, steel springs and a turned alloy barrel. The photo-etched fret that comes with the kit is nicely done and includes mesh panels for the stowage basket, a selection of reg numbers and various brackets.

A FEW UPGRADES

I could not resist using Legend Productions’ new resin upgrade set (LF1288) with this build. As well as giving you many improved parts such as fuel/water cans (a huge improvement on the kit parts), it also gives you the option of stocking the kit stowage basket with

various items or a complete, excellent, fully-loaded basket ready to paint! The sculpting and casting on this set is top notch. I particularly like the rolled camo sheet and bedding for the turret bins. This set easily creates the typical 'fully loaded' look seen on most IDF Centurions. Although the kit tracks are nicely detailed, the ones in mine suffered from flash, some moulding problems and were also a bit warped. So I replaced them with a set of Friulmodel metal tracks that I happened to have in the cupboard. These were meant for the old Tamiya kit, so I had to add a spacer between the sprocket halves to get a perfect fit. IDF tanks all seem to have some particularly fiddly aspect to them. Merkavas have their 'ball and chain' curtains, Zeldas have their TOGA armour, Achzarits have their rear stowage webbing, and this tank has its light clusters and smoke dischargers! Or maybe that’s just my own frustrations there! I decided to strengthen the light units by adding a central brass rod that was drilled into the light brackets and the hull edge. The headlight lenses were also replaced. With the smoke discharger boxes, I wanted to show them open and ready to use, so I depicted the remaining cuff of the protective cover with a strip of lead foil. For the tow cables, the kit ends were used, but the cord supplied in the kit was swapped for soft copper cable. I also added a secondary tow cable and RB Models brass shackles to the rear, as this appears in many photos and looks like those used on T-55/T-62 tanks.

FOR THE V NOW COMPLICATED BIT...

But bear with me! Sho't Kal Gimels were fitted with two types of ERA packages depending on whether the tank had the extra armour on the hull glacis and whether the turret had the loader’s scope on the roof or the front slope. The kit gives you the full set for a non-uparmoured hull, but tells you to fit it over the extra armour part. Strangely, some of the correct ERA blocks are included in the kit, but not all, and are not mentioned in the instructions! As for the turret, the instructions tell you to fit the blocks over the loader’s scope which is not correct for this tank as this was done on the later Dalet (D) versions, when they deleted the scope on most Sho'ts. See what I mean? It’s all very confusing! As I wanted to fit the extra hull armour, I had to come up with my own solution for the ERA. Using the few correct blocks that are mysteriously provided in the kit, I enlarged, moulded and cast the missing blocks and fitted them to the hull, as I saw in my references. The turret is easier, I just cut away the blocks not needed and fitted the remainder to the correct area. Close study of reference is essential with this. I had various bits of reference collected for this build, but the most indispensable was Dr Manasherob’s latest title on this very vehicle. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. AFV Club have done a good job of keeping the side shields as thin as they can, but this is one of the few places where etch-brass would be an improvement along with the tie-downs on the shields and the turret bins. The shields are moulded in one piece so I separated them into their individual pieces so that when they were attached to the tank there would be a slight misalignment, giving a more realistic look.

Legend Productions’ recently issued resin upgrade set (LF1288) for the kit was employed here; the resin set includes the superb stowage rolls seen above, plus the option of a fully ‘stuffed’ turret basket.

The crew was assembled from various parts from the spares-box; Hornet and VP heads topping them off nicely.

Various exterior details were added to the model; foundry numbers on cast-steel components, filler caps, number plates and equipment stowage frames. To accommodate the Friulmodel cast metal tracks chosen by the author, the drive sprocket halves needed a spacer between them to achieve the correct width.

25/06/2015 11:24

The one-piece turret bin casting requires some careful hand-painting, but looks extremely convincing once complete.

Mixes of Tamiya Acrylics were used to form the camo colours, applied in layers of varying tone.

As with nearly any tank kit, it’s advisable to spray the hull and turret individually to allow full paint coverage.

ACCESS HATCHES OPEN OR CLOSED?

If you like to model your hatches open, as I do, then you will either need to add crew figures or do a bit of scratchbuilding as there is no internal detail apart from the commander's periscopes. As the turret in the kit is the same in all the AFV Club range, it has a few moulded details, such as power conduits, that are not required for this variant and will need removing. So again, careful study of reference photos is essential. One of the features of the Centurion turret that

is tricky to model is the mantlet cover. As this differs from version to version, AFV Club have opted to provide different designs in their range of Cents, moulded in a soft, flexible, glue-able material. While not ideal, with careful trimming and painting it gives a passable rendition of the real thing. Although flexible, it does not allow the barrel to move more than a couple of millimetres! As mentioned earlier, the reg number plates are included on the etch fret. One of these is welded to the hull near the driver’s hatch

Mini Review... REVELL AIRBRUSH MIXING CUPS X15 ITEM no.39065 www.revell.de/en

and another is located on the side of the raised engine deck bulge. On Sho't tanks after the ’73 war, the reg was also written in weld on the other side of the engine deck. I tried to represent this by gluing on some numbers that I had shaved off a sprue runner. The first attempt was oversized and too regular. So those came off and were replaced with smaller ones that were distressed with glue. The effect wasn't perfect, but better than nothing. Also by the driver’s hatch is the water filler cap. The one moulded to the kit is

under-sized for a Sho't, so I replaced it with a resin one copied from the one on the rear engine deck. Various other details were also added such as a strap and bolt heads in the commanders hatch, power cables and a couple of aerials.

INTO THE PARTS-BIN

AFV Club gives you a generous selection of small arms with which to detail your tank, including two types of Uzi and two types of Galil assault rifle, all beautifully moulded. As the kit contains sprues meant for both the Gimel and the

This is a simple but extremely useful product that allows accurate measuring of paints in preparation for airbrushing. Fifteen, 30ml plastic cups come in each pack, marked in 5ml increments, down to the 5ml mark, which is followed by 2.5ml. Very useful indeed.

V later Dalet versions (now

available), you get the option of either the older .30cal MGs or the later GPMGs for the turret, as both were fitted to the Gimel. I chose the former as that is the look I prefer. Right at the last moment, I discovered that the commander's MG mount, as per the instructions, is not correct for a Gimel. So it was carefully changed. Luckily the correct parts are in the kit (but not mentioned). This version requires many parts from previous AFV Club Centurions, so the kit contains most of the sprues from earlier releases leading to a Dragon-like stuffed box. This will leave you with many unused parts for later projects.

Due to the very busy and highly detailed nature of the hull and turret, I chose to leave off certain parts and sub-assemblies during painting to make things easier - bringing them together for final assembly and weathering. After priming, I used Tamiya acrylics for the main colour and a couple of filters. Then followed oil paint and enamel colour-washes and some weathering using pigments and airbrushing. The markings were a mixture of the kit waterslides, some old rubdowns and hand-painting, masking and spraying (the barrel and side skirts). The crew figures were mashed together from various parts out of the 'bits

box'. The torsos were from the old Academy IDF set to which I added Hornet and Verlinden heads and the arms were whatever looked right. I added Nomex gloves to the commander with a bit of filler. Painted with enamels and oils, they fill up the hatches nicely.

PARTING SHO'T

Although AFV Club have gone to the trouble of giving us realistic sprung suspension, I feel this is somewhat pointless on a delicate display model. I chose to glue mine solid for this build. I must also comment on the soft vinyl-like wheel rims. Although they give you slightly more detail than

you would get on a rigid styrene part, I would sacrifice that for something that was easier to assemble and paint. All that said, this is still a great kit! It’s not a quick build, nor one for beginners; but persevere and you will be rewarded with a truly awesome model. I’m very pleased to finally have an accurate and impressive model of my favourite tank on my shelf. It was definitely worth all the hard work. Many thanks to Pocketbond and the Editor. ●

FULL-BUILD: LARGE-SCALE AVIATION TAMIYA 1:32 DE HAVILLAND MOSQUITO FB MK.VI â—? KIT NO.60326

BRITAIN'S BAL

TMMI's Editor starts work on Tamiya's incredible new 1:32 kit of the De Havilland Mosquito, made famous for being fast, deadly and made largely of wood. In Part One, we start work with the cockpit...

I

described in detail Tamiya's new 1:32 De Havilland Mosquito FB Mk.VI in the last issue of TMMI, so I won't eat up page-space by describing the kit all over again. Suffice to say, it is an extremely comprehensive production that includes a full (and I really mean full) cockpit, nose-gun bay and bomb bay, plus two complete Merlin engines and a full depiction of the aircraft's main undercarriage system. The model is one of Tamiya's most complex releases ever and the box is packed full of grey (and clear) polystyrene sprues oozing potential to create a masterpiece model; it's surely the most detailed kit yet of the famous 'Wooden Wonder'. One further thing to mention; in export kits (outside of Japan) an extra sprue is included, providing the engine cowlings in clear plastic (the opaque moulding is still included) to show off the engines without the need to remove the panels. A nice touch!

SO, ON WITH THE BUILD

The Mosquito's construction starts in the cockpit and almost straight away we are offered a choice; whether or not to fit the seated pilot figures that are provided in the box. I must admit, I rarely if ever add a figure to the cockpit, for two main reasons; after having spent a lot of time building, painting and weathering the cabin I don't want to obscure much of it with a pilot. Also, I'm not a great figure painter! So the crew usually gets left out. In the case of Tamiya's Mosquito however, the figures are so well done I really wanted to show one in 'action',

so I chose to install just the navigator, deciding to add the standing version of the pilot alongside the model at the finishing stages. The reason this choice must be made early on is that the photo-etched seat harness parts are different, depending on whether there's a crew figure in his seat or not. It's well worth studying the instructions closely to ensure the correct metal parts are used to build up the sections of strapping. I tried to anneal the springy metal harness parts using a mini-blowtorch and also on my kitchen gas hob, but these treatments didn't do much to soften the material and bending the straps to shape proved to work-harden them further; I'll keep experimenting until I can soften the parts without melting them. I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of PE seat harnesses for this very reason. The assembly of the cockpit, nose-gun bay and central bulkhead 'box' occupy the first sixteen sections of the thick instruction booklet which gives a further clue as to the complexity of this model. Despite this busy selection of sub-assemblies, the parts go together like a dream and time should be taken to savour the detail and the intuitive way Tamiya's designers have planned it all out. I got about as far as section sixteen until it was time to send this issue of TMMI to the printers, so the next instalment of this article will have to wait until next time. For now though, I hope my description of the initial assembly stages will help you build your model. And now, back to the workbench! â—?

ALSA BOMBER

PART 1

PREPARING THE COCKPIT PARTS Here we see the pilot's seat and armoured back-panel, the components of which have been cemented onto the half-bulkhead of the cockpit floor. The small parts in front are flares (in racks) and a fire extinguisher. A close-up view of the seat – propped up with a blob of ‘White Tack’ – reveals fine detail in the side-lever and struts.

A small photo-etched item is added at this stage, requiring the use of cyanoacrylate adhesive (superglue).

Here we see the main cockpit floor moulding, to which have been cemented a handful of smaller parts, including the nose-gun mounts.

In this view, we see the flares and extinguisher in place, but they have only been tacked in position using PVA wood glue. This is so their brackets can receive a layer of cockpit green of the same tone as the surrounding structure.

This is the underside of the cockpit floor, revealing the forward section of the bomb bay roof. Detail here is fantastic.

To create gluing contact areas without needing to scrape off paint, these patches of masking tape were applied to the mating surfaces of the seat’s support panel.

More superb surface detail – raised and recessed – on the surface behind the navigator. Some of this area would have been metal, others wood, on the real aircraft.

FULL-BUILD: LARGE-SCALE AVIATION TAMIYA 1:32 DE HAVILLAND MOSQUITO FB MK.VI â—? KIT NO.60326

The ammunition feeds for the four .303 machine guns in the nose are made up from two halves and there's a joint line about two-thirds of the way up on each feed.

The joints were very carefully filled with Mr Hobby Mr Surfacer 500, applied by paintbrush, allowed to cure, then sanded.

The forward cockpit bulkhead carries the backing plate for the instrument panel as well as the Mosquito's characteristically large rudder pedals. A look at the back (forward facing) of the instrument panel, revealing the dial and switch bodies, all of which cry out for some cabling. Maybe on our next build of this kit!

Above, clockwise. This structure represents the central fuselage bulkheads. Note the upper strut to stabilise the two large cross-sections. A photo-etched metal disc was cemented over the aperture in the middle of the rear. The underside of the central bulkhead sub-assembly forms the rear section of the bomb bay roof, with plenty of excellent detail in view. The four curved items seen here are the braces for the bombs, which will be fitted much later on!

Tamiya are particularly proud of the pilot and navigator’s seat pads and rightly so. Only just visible here (the wrinkles are very subtle) the sculptors have done a wonderful job in creating realistic fabric-like textures.

All four of the seat pads (navigator’s pads to the right), lined up and ready to be painted.

For the first time, Tamiya have chosen to form the instrument facias from photo-etched metal, instead of kit plastic. This is, of course, much thinner and potentially more realistic.

The kit comes with two photo-etched frets, made from nickel. This is quite a rigid, springy material so the seat harnesses will need annealing to allow them to be formed around the crew (if you're using them) or just the seats, if you're not. No doubt, more malleable harnesses will appear from the aftermarket producers, in time.

A spread of the main instrument panel parts, showing the clear-moulded dial face panels over which the metal facias fit. A thorough ‘clean-up’ of the metal parts is essential, removing all the tiny tabs where the parts were removed from their frets.

Here's how the metal facias fit over the clear dial mouldings. To create the dial faces, Tamiya provide reverse decals that the modeller applies to the backs of the clear parts; highly realistic!

With the cockpit parts assembled as far as possible, all components and sub-assemblies were mounted on cocktail sticks and coffee-stirrers with Blu-Tack, in readiness for the painting stages.

COCKPIT; INITIAL PAINTWORK

Once the base colour had dried, it was time to apply a little scalelightening. A mix of XF-72 with a little XF-2 Flat White was made, again thinning with X20A.

Tamiya offer a ready-made colour for British cockpits in the form of XF-71 Cockpit Green, which is an excellent match for the Mosquito's interior. It's essential to stir the paint thoroughly before use and we recommend the use of a motorised, hand-held paint stirrer. An initial layer of unadulterated XF-71 – thinned with Tamiya X-20A acrylic paint thinner – was airbrushed onto the sub-assemblies, in two layers.

Within the fuselage halves, there are several recesses in the mouldings that aid the location of internal structures, such as here in the tailwheel bay for the final bulkhead. To prevent paint from building-up in these hard to reach areas, they were masked off with narrow masking tape.

Once the colours have been applied, the thin masking tape (by Aizu) was peeled off, revealing pristine areas of bare plastic.

34 August 2015 TMMI 238

p 30-37 Mosquito 238MN.indd 34

In this view we can see the subtle difference between the straight Cockpit Green (left) and the lighter mix with white added. The amount of white must be judged by eye, but as a starting point, try 90% green and 10% white, then ‘tweak’ from there.

Here we are in the central area of the fuselage and the recesses for the bulkheads have also been masked off in readiness for spraying.

It might seem like overkill when the paint could be scraped off, but in a kit engineered with such tight tolerances as this, anything that can be done to preserve the near-perfect fit of parts is worth doing. It’s much easy than trying to scrape off the paint from the recesses!

29/06/2015 17:10

In a similar spirit to the pre-masking of areas to be painted, some components were tacked in place prior to the application of the cockpit colour.

Here we see two electrical boxes, temporarily fixed in place with PVA glue, which can be peeled off without damaging the model’s plastic. Straight XF-71 plus the lightened mix have already been applied.

In these views we can see the subtle effect of the scale-lightening over the darker, base colour of XF-71 Cockpit Green. Further paint effects in the form of light weathering will be applied over this. The boxes have now been carefully removed and the remains of the PVA glue picked off with tweezers.

The ‘shadow’ of the part can be seen in bare plastic, making the re-cementing of the components (once painted black) much easier and tidier.

Mini Review... ULTRACAST 1:32 WWII USMC SEATED FIGHTER PILOT GREGORY ‘PAPPY’ BOYINGTON ITEM no.54015 www.ultracast.ca

The areas of the pilot's seat panel, masked off earlier, can be seen here – now it's a very clean and easy job to cement these parts together!

It’s no wonder that this new figure from Canadian producer Ultracast is so detailed and natural-looking, the master was sculpted by none other than Mike Good. Detail is simply stunning and assembly easy, so it’s up to the modeller to paint it well.. The perfect addition to Tamiya’s 1:32 F4U-1 Corsair.

The wooden rudder guides under the pilot's feet can be painted in overall wood, or given a scraped and scratched appearance if preferred. A mix of AMMO's wood-coloured acrylic paints was first applied to the two panels.

Oops! An object rolled off a shelf above and knocked over the lightened mix of Cockpit Green and it reached the Mosquito's photo-etched frets! After a little 'descriptive language' it was easily cleaned up...

By using several mixes of the two shades, a wood-grain effect can be easily and quickly achieved, applied by paint brush.

Vallejo’s ‘Chipping Medium’ (73.214) was hand painted over the ‘wood’ areas. This is a water-soluble, liquid mask that will form a temporary layer between the wood colour and the XF-71 to follow.

In this close-up view we can see the glossy, rather thick nature of the liquid mask, but this will soon be hidden.

XF-71 (slightly lightened with XF-2 Flat White) was hand painted over the treated areas. This looks a little rough here, but most of it will be coming off!

The treated areas were moistened with plain water and then the green could be gently scraped off, using the tips of needle-pointed tweezers.

The scraped effect can be seen here and it looks more realistic than simply painting the scratches on. A few light colour-washes and this effect will come to life!

Here we see an ‘in-action’ shot of the fuselage halves during spraying. The airbrush used on this model was the Iwata HP-CH double action, with Micro Air Control valve. UMP’s airbrush cleaner is the ideal material to flush out waste paint from the airbrush, leaving no trace inside the paint cup or needle.

And that's all for now folks! Next issue, we'll really get to grips with the paint effects within the cockpit, including how to assemble the instrument panel and apply the dial decals... See you in a month! TMMI 238 August 2015

REVELL STAR WARS EASYKIT POCKET X-WING, INTERCEPTOR

GET INTO TH Philippe Devos dives into his stock of 1:12 motorcycle parts to concoct an original Star Wars mini-diorama around a couple of Revell 'EasyKit Pocket' models

I

guess, like me, you keep all the parts that remain in the box after the end of a model build 'just in case'? And ten years later, you are still wondering what you can make from this stock of spare parts? Well, if you're a fan of science fiction, here is a fast and effective use for them! Revell offers many 'Star Wars' kits in the 'EasyKit Pocket' range, which are inexpensive, pre-painted and feature easy 'snap' assembly. The X-Wing and TIE Interceptor in this range are of different but consistent scales; the TIE is just a little bigger. These models are usually supplied with a presentation ‘pedestal’ but oddly, only these two vessels are not. Armed with a plastic base, two transparent lollipops sticks and my stock of spare parts, I will try to remedy this, so please, accompany me to the Death Star... May the Force be with us! ●

THE GROOVE! Here's an overview of what can be accumulated in fifteen years of modelling. It is exclusively motorcycle parts, or unused parts on sprues, replaced by Transkits... This stock is often called upon to replace a lost or broken piece when building or as test-pieces for different paints, but today, it will serve as an original creation in its own right.

A disused Bburago presentation plate was covered with a rectangular white plastic card onto which were glued the accumulated spare parts to completely cover the surface! No particular design was followed, the parts were just built up to create a futuristic appearance; all done in less than an hour using Tamiya 'Limonene' liquid glue.

All parts likely to appear on a surface like that of the Death Star were set apart; clutch bells, silencers etc. The important thing is to have a flat surface to facilitate glueing. Also recovered from the spares box were the jigs for assembling the chain of the Honda RC166 (right in photo) to appear in relief on the base. All these parts will be rapidly but cleanly deburred.

Basically, the assembly began with the largest parts (the large grey areas, from the aforementioned chain-assembly jig of the Honda RC166) and then built up with silencer halves from the Honda RC211V, the part most available from my ‘stock’ (I’ve built almost fifteen!). Honda clutch housings were positioned, then filled with smaller parts. Some sections of plastic profile were added to create pipelines.

This is where my eight-year old son had the idea of making futuristic guns from MotoGP front forks! Silencers from an NSR were drilled to create muzzles and the whole was liberally glued up, held in place by clamps.

Over a pre-shading layer of XF-1 Flat Black, XF-63 German Grey was airbrushed over the entire surface while allowing the black areas to subtly show through. Then, the base was given a very diluted colour-wash of black oil paint and subjected to a very light drybrushing of grey oil paint on the sharpest edges. The airbrush returned to blacken the muzzles of the cannons plus some random shading into the hollows of the base.

Close-ups showing some recognizable parts such as Honda RC211V and Yamaha YZR500 mufflers, ignition covers, clutch, starter cover, oil filter, rear suspension, forks, dials and more. The guns are really typical example of 'misuse of kit parts'. George Lucas's designers made good use of Tiger I parts for the Millennium Falcon and F-14 parts for the A-Wing'. So my MotoGP forks for proton cannons make perfect sense!

Revell models, paints and accessories are available from all good toy and model retailers. For further information visit www.revell.de/en, @RevellGermany or facebook.com/revell

The vessels are from the Revell’s EasyKit Pocket range and are of a very small scale; 1:90 for the TIE and 1:112 for the X-Wing. Fit is very good, there are few parts and the pre-painted colours are very accurate. I contented myself with a black colour-wash using Tamiya Panel Line Accent Colors, wiped off with a cotton swab in the direction of the “wind” which just took a few minutes. The models were fixed to the base with lollipop sticks (miraculously saved from kids’ chewy sweets at a birthday party), which were perfectly transparent and strong enough for the job.

www.airbrushes.com In recent years it has become more common to see superb models of wrecked and burnt vehicles, with the wide array of colours associated with metal that has been subjected to high temperatures or smoke-blackening. Lifecolor have produced a set of five matt acrylic paints in their customary 22ml. pots, plus a pot of pigment powder. The colours comprise: Blackened Umber, Exhausted Umber, Rusted Umber, Burned Stains, and Incinerated White. These range from black to white, through a variety of rusty colours, and would be ideal for a vehicle which has burned and then been exposed to the elements. The pigment powder is a pure white ‘Ash’, which is ideal for the type of residue seen when tyres burn – many photos show this effect on vehicles. To get the best results, it is really vital to work from a colour photo of a burnt truck or tank, to see how the colours vary and combine to create a rich combination of effects. This set of colours will be extremely valuable for any vehicle or machinery that has fully or partially been burnt. Many possible applications on wrecked vehicles; needs access to photos of real examples to see how the colours should be used. CLS BURNED – ACRYLIC PAINTS FOR BURNT-OUT VEHICLES (CS29)

www.airbrushes.com It can be extremely difficult to get just the right colour for tarpaulins and ropes, and nothing ruins a model more quickly than canvas that looks incorrect. This set of six matt acrylic paints in 22ml. pots is designed to give a good starting point. The Lifecolor paints range from very dark umber hemp, through paler brown and grey colours, to a pale tan. The intention is that they provide suitable shades for new rope or for old and weathered rope, with endless combinations to get the best effects. I have tried these colours on vehicle tarpaulins and for the first time they looked fine with no modification required. In all likelihood, the commonest use on military models will be for canvas tarps and straps, and these paints have endless possibilities for different applications. www.creativemodels.co.uk This fascinating set contains five acid containers cast in clear resin. The containers represent the large glass demijohn flasks or ‘carboys’ used to store highly corrosive acid, such as used in vehicle batteries. The flasks are normally supported in a metal frame, padded with straw, and this is what Plus Model have reproduced in excellent detail. In order to get the correct appearance, the straw is painted first, and then the metal frame, in order to get the straw colour showing through the ‘glass’. These items could be used in an industrial setting, a garage, or anywhere where a military unit is checking their battery status. These carboys were used until the late 20th Century, and typically had a volume of 6 gallons. A unique addition to a diorama, or as a vehicle load, cast in excellent detail. This is a multi-part model in itself, with clear instructions and indications of wiring. Although I was unable to identify the exact version of charging generator, previous experience with Plus Model is that they will have exactly copied a specific example, and accuracy is very high. This set would make a great German workshop setting, where vehicles are being serviced and repaired. There are plenty of opportunities for use with other nations as well, as many of the parts provided are pretty generic and useful in many situations. MODEL SHOW REPORT SHIZUOKA HOBBY SHOW 2015

SHIZUOKA HOBBY SHOW 2 TMMI’s Editor follows up last month’s report on the 2015 Shizuoka Hobby Show with some extra models that we didn’t have space for!

I

n the last issue of TMMI in my show report, I presented a selection of the big new releases from the ‘SHS’, but sometimes this extensive coverage of the major models can be to the detriment of the smaller items, which can often be just as interesting. So, in this follow-up, I have compiled photos of some of the less prominent but equally cool items that were exhibited! ● (Please note, many kits on show were built from test-shots and are subject to change in the final production releases). Gorgeous 1:144 resin flying-boats from A&W; Aichi Type-2 H9A-1 and Hirosho H3H-1 www.aw-models.com (English-language site within).

New items from AFV Club; 1/35 Kfz.100 L4500A W/ Bilstein 3T crane and an anti-aircraft variant of the M24 Chaffee tank.

Y WAY IS S600

Tamiya's new 1:24 Honda S600, in the box

T

he Honda S600 was initially shown to the general public in March 1964 and it went on sale a year later. It was introduced in two forms – a roadster and a fastback coupé – and was the first Honda available in two trim levels. During its production run up to 1966, the model styling would remain pretty much the same, with the most notable changes made to the front grille, bumper and headlights. The S600 was propelled by a tiny 606cc, four-cylinder DOHC engine with an output of 57hp, but the car's small size and relatively light weight meant that this was enough to give it a sporty performance. The S600 featured an unusual motorcycle style chain-driven rear wheel drive. Success in Europe followed as the S600 quickly gained respect as a light and speedy sports car. It was also to prove a success in races both in Japan and abroad. The S600 is based upon Tamiya's highly accurate 1997 kit of the S800 (kits 24190 and 89657). New

parts are included to depict features specific to S600 such as the front grille and bumper unit, wheels, bonnet, radiator-top parts, brake plus lights. The unique chain-drive, trailing arm suspension is realistically captured, as is the front double wishbone suspension setup. Parts are included to recreate the S600 as an open top with folded down roof, or as a hard top. ● MODEL SPEC SCALE; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1:24 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . .IM, CP, PEB, WS KIT NUMBER; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .24340 AVAILABILITY; Tamiya models are widely available from good model shops. Excellent chrome grille adds the finishing touch.

As you’d expect, the kt combines superb detail with ease of construction, one of Tamiya’s key principles in the way they design model kits.

It comes with basic interior detail and the suspension is well detailed as are the engine deck and fender areas. Photo-etched mesh grenade-screens are provided for the turret, along with PE straps for the on-vehicle tools. Tamiya have re-boxed this kit and in the process, have included a figure set (originally released in 2002) containing two crew figures and a bike rider, the excellent 1996 German Infantry Equipment Set (Mid/Late WW2) and the 1999-issued DKW motorcycle, enabling the modeller to create an instant vignette! A neat collation of excellent kit parts. MN

AMX SINGLE-SEAT FIGHTER www.luckymodel.com SCALE; 1:48 • MATERIALS: IM, PE, WS • KIT NUMBER; K48026 Kinetic’s aircraft kits get better with each release, the proof being their newest model, the Italian/Brazilian AMX Light Attack Aircraft, delivered to the Italian, Brazilian and Venezuelan air forces in the late ‘80s early ‘90s. The kit is moulded in grey plastic and is made up from a comparatively large number of parts; the box is bulging! Optional nose-sections are included for the A1-A and A1-M versions, control surfaces can be modelled in the retracted or extended positions and two underwing ordnance fits are provided. The cockpit and main undercarriage bay are comprehensively detailed and the airframe sports subtle recessed panel lines. Markings are provided for one Brazilian Air Force and two Italian Air Force machines. A nice-looking kit of a pretty fighter jet! MN

Tamiya’s figures, equipment and bike parts add a lot to the model

Lots of parts and refined detail all-round. An unusual subject too!

Wheels/tyres might be better replaced with a resin featuring a weighted ‘bulge’

Nothing major to criticize. The rivet detail on the tail area might be a little over-emphasised

BRITISH X-CRAFT SUBMARINE www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 • MATERIALS: IM, PE, WS • KIT NUMBER; 63504 I have to admit that my eyes widened somewhat when this kit arrived, having quite an interest in the Royal Navy’s X-Craft submarines and an intense admiration for the unimaginable bravery of the crews. This new injection-moulded kit from Merit International provides parts to create a detailed and accurate-looking replica of the famous little sub in 1:35 and from an examination of the sprues, they’ve struck a good balance of detail and ease of construction. The stocky hull – forty-three centimetres in length – is moulded in two halves and sports excellent weld-seam detail where the various sections meet. Unfortunately the ‘side-cargo’ mines on either side of the hull are, apart from six filling-ports each, perfectly smoothsurfaced where there should be rows of rivets, but these can be added by the modeller without two much work. CHURCHILL MK.III TYPE D CARPET LAYER www.pocketbond.co.uk • SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS: IM, PE, SVT, PS, WS • KIT NUMBER; AF35274 The latest Churchill tank to touch down at TMMI is the very distinctive-looking Mk.III with a massive ‘bobbin’ and framework bolted to its hull-sides. The spool held yards of ‘carpet’, in reality, thick canvas matting, stabilised with transverse steel poles. This system was used on D-Day to create a stable pathway for vehicles to drive up the sandy beaches and on into the Norman countryside. AFV Club’s kit comes with injection-moulded plastic parts for the bobbin and frame, plus self-adhesive paper tape for the ‘carpet’ and strips of wood for the ribbing. The tank itself is sublime, with masses of detail and an accurate outline. MN

Fantastic subject with an extraordinary back-story. A well detailed kit that will shine with some extra fine detail work

An impressive replica of the 79th Armoured Division’s Churchill ‘bobbin’ with lots of detail

Just a few lines of rivets need adding to the Amatol-filled clamshell mines

FERRARI F50 Available from all good toy and model retailers. www.revell.de/en SCALE; 1:24 • MATERIALS: IM, SVT, WS • KIT NUMBER; 07370 The 1995 Ferrari F50 is still an incredible-looking car even after twenty years, and Revell’s kit has stood the test of time well too. Although not a new kit, the detail is still impressively good, coming with a decent representation of the engine/gearbox/rear suspension/exhausts (some flash was present on our sample here). The cabin is well executed too although the moulded-in seatbelts spoil the look of the otherwise excellent seats a little. With some thorough preparation of the parts prior to paint application, this kit has the potential to look extremely good indeed. MN

HORCH 108 TYP 40 WWII GERMAN PERSONNEL CAR www.hannants.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 • MATERIALS: IM, SVT, WS • KIT NUMBER; 35505 This is an all-new moulding of the WW2 German Army personnel car, a vehicle used in all theatres of operation and a familiar sight in the rear-echelons of battlefronts east to west. ICM’s part’s breakdown is thorough, going right down to the ladder chassis, double-wishbone suspension and front/rear axles and diffs. The kit comes with a very usable replica of the Horch 108’s 3.8 litre V8 engine and this can remain on view if the engine cover panels are left unglued, although this is one part and will need a little surgery to depict the centrally hinged double panels. A very appealing aspect of the model is the open-moulded engine grille, a major feature of the ‘108 and one that draws attention. The kit even comes with a shrouded fan and radiator that sits behind the grille. All cabin doors are moulded individually as are the rear stowage compartment’s hatches. A very refined production all round and a modern alternative to Tamiya’s kit of the Horch. MN

Good detail all round and an apparently accurate profile

Fantastic detail inside and out; the open-louvred grille is extremely well done

Some flash is present here and there and the moulded-in seatbelts are a little unrealistic

Bonnet will need a little cutting to ‘open’ accurately

SKODA 42CM M.1917 HEAVY SIEGE HOWITZER SEVASTOPOL 1942 www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 • MATERIALS: IM, PE • KIT NUMBER; 2018 Takom is constantly expanding its product lines and their 1:35 kits of massive, WW1 large-bore howitzers used in the WW2 siege of Sevastopol, 1942 are particularly interesting. Initially we had the Skoda 30.5cm M1916 and now, the 42cm M1917 gun has arrived. The kit comes on three large sprues and is moulded in ‘panzergrey’ polystyrene, a small strip of photo-etched brass and a pair of polycap fasteners. Interestingly, a single figure is also provided, that of Field Marshall Erich von Manstein who was in command of the 11th Army during the siege of Sevastopol in Crimea. The kit is nicely detailed throughout; it doesn’t have a huge amount of parts but they are well engineered and free from flash and other injection-moulding defects. The barrel has simulated rifling which, due to the limits of the moulding process, is ‘straight’ rather than spiralled, but at least there is the appearance of rifling at the muzzle. An unusual subject that looks quick to build and fun to paint! MN

Nicely detailed, highly original subject, potentially fun to paint Nothing negative leaps out here – a gun-crew would have been nice

TAKOM, HONG KONG

SPPZ A1/A2 LUCHS www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 • MATERIALS: IM, PE • KIT NUMBER; 2017 The SpPz 2 Luchs eight-wheeled recon vehicle entered service with the Bundeswehr in the mid-1970s and served right up to the mid-2000s, being replaced by the four-wheeled Fennek Light Armoured Reconnaissance Vehicle. It’s a seriously big beast, easily as large as some of WW2’s largest tanks and in model form its hull parts have quite a presence on the workbench. Takom’s kit actually not an overwhelmingly complex production, the suspension and running gear taking up the lion’s share of the parts-count. No interior is supplied but the outstanding levels of exterior detail more than make up for this. Interestingly, two whole sets of tyres are included – Pirelli and Dunlop – with differing tread patterns. With the inclusion of clear-moulded optical gear and some useful photo-etched brass, this is a classy production all round. MN

An imposing presence on the workbench for sure, with great detail and a straightforward-looking build up Imparting weighted bulges in the rigid vinyl tyres will be tricky TMMI 238 August 2015

BEFEHLSPANZER, GERMAN COMMAND, CONTROL AND OBSERVATION ARMORED COMBAT VEHICLES IN WORLD WAR TWO. PART 1: TANKS OF GERMAN ORIGIN

RICCARDO NICCOLI, JEAN RESTAYN, RN PUBLISHING ISBN 978-88-95011-08-0 From good bookshops and www.casematepublishing.co.uk This book does exactly what it says on the cover! In Part One of this Ninety-two page (inc. covers) soft-cover production, we have an informative overview of the command and control vehicles used by the German armed forces, from the humble little Panzer I-based kl.Bz. Bef.Wg used in the early years of the war to the Befehlstiger B, via Panzer III, Panzer IV, Panther and Tiger I. Each chapter consists of wartime photos of the tanks in question along with some rather nicely executed colour profile illustrations (over 100 in total) that show the wide variety of camouflage schemes seen on these vehicles. From a modeller’s point of view, the book is a little too wide-ranging to provide a lot of detailed information on one specific type, but the excellent illustrations do provide some valuable ideas for paintwork and markings. MN

SD.KFZ.7 – 8 TON ZUGKRAFTWAGEN KRAUSS-MAFFEI AND VARIANTS

DR NICOLAUS HETTLER • NUTS & BOLTS VOL.34 www.nuts-bolts.de • www.historexagents.com Volume 34 from Nuts and Bolts takes the evergreen modelling subject of the Sd.Kfz.7 WW2 German halftrack and gives it the familiar and much appreciated N&B shakedown. The book runs to 188 pages including covers – there’s a lot to discuss about this vehicle family – and it is examined in intimate detail from the tracks up. We begin with a thorough historical background on the vehicle and its pre-war origins, with descriptions of all the major variants (in English and German), with deployment details and a list of the available kits in 1:76, 1:72, 1:48 and 1:35 scales. This chapter is followed by some superb factory photos of the mid1930s development vehicle, showing chassis details and more. As we progress through this section, we move into the war-years and start to see ‘7s in service; various versions are depicted here. The wartime imagery is extensive and fascinating, offering the modeller plenty of detail references, plus markings and camouflage/weathering ideas. A useful series of 1:35 five-view scale drawings follow, again covering the major variants of the Sd.Kfz.7, from troop-carrier to the armoured Sd.Kfz.7.2 3.7cm AA vehicle. Next we are treated to some gorgeous colour profiles (ten pages), a chapter of museum walk-arounds of surviving examples (forty-five pages!) and the book is topped off with an eleven-page chapter on modelling the vehicle, with high quality presentations from Vinnie Branigan, Guillem Marti i Pujol and the legendary Tony Greenland. All in all, this is a forensically thorough production on the well-known Sd.Kfz.7, with pretty much everything the modeller will need to know about the subject. If you’re a modeller of WW2 German halftracks, consider this an essential purchase. Very highly recommended. MN

The Editor’s Page... The Editor’s inspiration comes from, a catalogue?

I

’m fairly certain that I have touched on this before in TMMI, but after coming across my treasured 1989 Verlinden Productions’ catalogue again and being drawn back into a haze of late ‘80s modelling nostalgia, I felt I had to mention it again. Put simply, without having seen François Verlinden’s model work in his catalogue during the late 1980s, I would not have re-joined the hobby. I would not be building models and, as a corollary, would not be working as the Editor of Tamiya Model Magazine. I was an avid modeller in my early years (I started around forty years ago) and built all sorts of kits, from Airfix 1:72 aircraft (pretty much all of them) to 1:72 Fujimi armour, dioramas, RC cars and more. This tailed off during my later teen years (as it does for so many people) but in my early twenties, while working in a completely different industry, I happened upon the Harrow Model Shop in North London, during a lunchtime break. I found the Verlinden catalogue and the rest, as they say, is history. So, the images you see here are far more than just great models to me; they represent my rebirth into the scale modelling hobby and as such, have a personal resonance to me. I wonder if you have a similar story to mine? See you again on August 20th! editor@tamiyamodelmagazine.com
