FULL-BUILD: MILITARY VEHICLE TAMIYA 1:35 CHAR BI BIS ● ITEM NO.30058
RENAULT'S GALLIC JUG Lukasz Orczyc-Musialek uses J's Work masking set as a way of tackling those dreaded black camouflage outlines, commonly seen on French tanks of the WW2 era
T
he French Char B1 was close in appearance to tanks from World War I, because it was designed only a couple of years after war's end. The first proposal was simply as a 75mm self-propelled howitzer (with gun mounted in the hull) but in the early 1930s, a small turret with a 47mm gun was added, thus changing it into a heavy tank. Because its development and production were repeatedly delayed, the
8
vehicle was technologically complex and expensive. As a result, when mass production began it was already obsolescent. In 1940, the French army had 369 Char B1s in its inventory. During the Battle of France in 1940, the Char B1 was better armoured than the equivalent German tanks and was a psychological shock for German soldiers. They called it 'Koloss' (Juggernaut). There are a lot of testimonies where B1s
destroyed enemy vehicles without loss to themselves. On the 16th of May 1940 near Stonne, the Char B1 bis named 'Eure' attacked a German column and destroyed thirteen tanks – including Pz.Kpfw.III and Pz.Kpfw.IV – and received 140 hits but retreated from the battlefield undamaged! Unfortunately for the French, the tanks' potential was not fully exploited. The Char B1s were slow, had a high fuel consumption
and were susceptible to breakdowns; moreover they were distributed on a long section of the battle front. A lot of B1s were eliminated by anti-tank guns but many (161) were abandoned by their own crews, then captured undamaged by the Germans. They were pressed into second line units for training purposes; in the Wehrmacht they were called 'Panzerkampfwagen B-2 740 (f)'.Some of them were converted

The elements of the narrow fenders. Initially they were one part, but to emboss the rivets it was easier to cut them into separate elements.
The next step was to bend the fenders. The author used a photo-etch bender to achieve an accurate result. The turret, gun cover and the driver’s hatch were re-textured with a new surface. The author used a mix of Revell Contacta Cement and Tamiya putty in a 3:1 ratio. It was applied with an old brush and after couple of hours, sanded a little. It is important to remember that this is not rough Russian steel, so the sanding needs to be very gentle.
into flamethrowers or mechanized artillery. In German service they saw action in the Balkans and on the Eastern Front. Some of them were deployed to the Channel Islands (Guernsey and Jersey) as part of Panzer-Abteilung 213. To sum up, it must be said that the heavily armoured B1 bis tank was scary, but only in theory. The French concept of the tank commander operating the main armament failed. In
the conditions of a rapidly changing battlefield, the commanding of a tank, plus searching and attacking purposes was beyond the ability of one man. In addition, the 75mm gun-mount was badly designed, as it was almost impossible to aim in a horizontal plane due to lack of space within the hull. After the war, the B1 bis' chassis was used as a base for new French tank, the ARL 44.
The weld seams were sculpted with Milliput. The author moulded it with toothpick and smoothed it with a wet brush.
The front of the model, ready to be painted. Note the damaged fender and holes for missing rivets.

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY VEHICLE TAMIYA 1:35 CHAR BI BIS ● ITEM NO.30058
KIT V TAMIYA'S Well, there's not much new
to say about the kit (30058) because the only difference from the original release by Tamiya in 2006 (35282) is the electric motor. So, the kit can be made as a motorised replica and – as I discovered on the internet – it works rather well. I chose not to use the motor as the model's finish would be delicate and I didn't want to damage it, so the kit was built as the typical model leaving the motor unpacked. Maybe in a couple years, when my son is older I will build this kit with him as the Tamiya suggests!
ADDITIONAL PARTS AND TOOLS
To raise the kit detail to a higher level I added metal gun barrels from RB Model (35B79) and the Voyager photo-etched parts (35105). As well as this, I fabricated some small parts like rivets, 'pigs tail' hook, handles and antenna cable cover. In the painting stage I used J's Work Airbrush Camo Mask (PPA5069) dedicated to this kit. It was really good choice and helped a lot during the preparation of the camouflage. The crew's stuff was completed from parts I found in my stash - no special set, just individual parts matched to the kit.
U
Some fabrication work was done here. The author replaced the antenna cable cover and added handles on the engine hatches.
The real antenna cover was made from leather so I decide to distort its shape and re-surface it with Tamiya cement. It was shaped with tweezers and old blade during the drying time.
The brass exhaust covers were first annealed, which is why they look so dark. The PE set did not include the inner fenders extensions, so they were cut out from plastic card. The rear wall had two holes (for the electrical elements inside of the hull). Which were filled with putty. After sanding, the wall was painted black to check the surface.
The left side of the model, ready to paint. Note the Renault plate on the front. This is a really nice little addition, available in the photo-etched sets by Voyager and Aber.
The tracks were packed in one bag and they fitted together perfectly; the set is very quick to build. Just click them together! They just needed a little sanding on the tread faces, to remove a tiny moulding mark.
Some lines of rivets on both upper hull sides of the model are missing, so the author prepared his own using old sprues, a lighter and three little holes drilled in copper sheet. The heated plastic was pressed to it, cooled and the rivets sliced off, ready to use. It was just thirty minutes work for both sides.
Here we see the fully constructed model, ready for painting.

25/09/2015 11:03
After the model had been washed in warm water (with couple drops of washing up liquid) I airbrushed three very thin coats of black primer – especially on the metal fenders – to be sure that in next steps the paint wouldn't be dislodged (especially when de-masking).
Tamiya XF-69 NATO Black was the first shade on the kit because the camo outlines needed to be applied at the beginning.
The masks mentioned in the text were definitely a good choice. They are perfectly designed, the material is thin, malleable and with just the right amount of adhesion. It was time-consuming but the result was worth it.
Tamiya XF-58 Olive Green was airbrushed only onto the relevant areas to avoid building up layers of paint.
A mixture of Tamiya XF-59 Desert Yellow and XF-60 Dark Yellow in a ratio of 2:1 was the last coloured to be airbrushed. Note the amount of masking tape on whole kit, protecting the previously applied shades!
Tamiya XF-9 Hull Red seems looks quite bright and a little too 'strong', but this is only an illusion. As we will see, it works perfectly with the other colours.
The result of four hours work. It came out pretty well.

The identification signs, name, numbers and letters were hand painted except 'L' which were masked first and then airbrushed.
Only the French roundels (at three points on the model) were cut from the decal sheet, applied with help from Set and Sol. Gloss varnish was first applied to avoid 'silvering' of the markings.
The first layer of paint to be applied to the assembled tracks was a rust-coloured primer.
The edges were ‘silvered’ with Vallejo Model Color to replicate polished steel.
AK Interactive's 'Dust and Dirt Deposits' and it worked perfectly in this case. The liquid accumulates in corners which produced a pleasingly real-looking effect.
The heavy dark wash was applied with no thinner, to simulate the grease used for the track links.
In the end, all the surfaces that had been previously highlighted with silver were ‘polished’ once, more but this time with a 6B graphite pencil.

The exhaust tubes and their covers were treated with rust-coloured oil paints. Note the aerial recognition sign on the rear deck. A pre-dusting was applied, using Tamiya XF-57 Buff as a base for pigment application. The construction of the chassis and scores of small wheels suggest how uncomfortable it must have been for a 'passenger' in this vehicle.
The pigments applied to the model were mixed in random proportions.
Some of the edges were polished with the pencil. Maybe this is not authentic, but the mud and dirt needed a contrasting effect so look more realistic.
Surface scratches were simulated with tweezers tips
In the end some wet stains were added.

V BASE After the model was
finished I prepared a small and simple display base. Using balsa wood and thick cardboard, I built up the box. The wood was treated with Mig Productions' Wood Ageing Solution and the cardboard was painted black, then coated with glossy varnish. For the front, I printed a sticker with name of the kit and on the other sides I glued small photos of tanks from the French Campaign. It's a very simple and cheap presentation but it's better to display the kit this way than directly on the table, or even worse, handled by sweaty fingers! â—?

HOT HATCH AC
I
must admit that, until I ended up with this new model of the Golf GTI in my hands, I'd never really been interested in the car that much. A quick search on the internet – starting with Wikipedia – and I learned that the concept of the VW Golf was born in 1970, designed by the hand of Giugiaro Giorgietto as a successor to the iconic Beetle. The production Golf Mk.I was launched in May 1974 and no less than 6,720,000 were produced between 1974 and 1983.
The GTI Version (from the Italian 'Gran Turismo Iniezione') was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1975. It was equipped a 1.6-litre, fuel-injection, 110bhp petrol engine and weighed under 850kg. During its first year on sale, the GTI Mk.1 was offered in two colours: Mars Red (Marsrot L31B) and Silver Grey Metallic (Diamantsilbermetallic L97A). You will find a wealth of information and pictures on the Golf GTI at www.passiongolfgti.com site.
GTI FROM REVELL
The title of Revell's kit box simply says 'VW Golf 1 GTI'. By studying the documentation and examining the parts closely, it turns out that it is a Golf 1600S 1976, that is to say from the very first production batch. My first impressions were slightly mixed, with a fairly simple box art (but clear and accurate! Ed), and the impractical side-opening box which doesn't allow the parts to be stored during assembly. On the upside, I
appreciate the fully detailed engine compartment with an opening bonnet. We must acknowledge that Revell has brilliantly met the brief with this kit. The kit is sold at a very competitive price (it can be found for less than £20 from various sources), made possible by the lack of accessories that are more often seen in more expensive kits from other brands; there are no masks for the windows, photo-etched parts, cables or metal logo transfers. Just pure, moulded plastic.

ACTION! Eric Evain builds Revell's new 1:24 kit of Volkswagen's Golf GTI Mk.I, the first 'hot hatch' to hit the streets in the mid-1970s
Here we see a ‘dry-assembly’ that reveals several adjustments made by the author, most notably on the forward lip of the bonnet to the body to bring it into line with the tips of the wings.
Masks were made from Tamiya tape in preparation to paint the wheel-arch extensions, all done ahead of the body being painted to prevent damage. The challenge was to pinpoint where the extensions join to the body.
Masks were also prepared for the doors’ inner-trim. The mask seen here will be peeled off, the body-colour door edges sprayed and the mask re-applied. Contrary to the instructions, the entire panel was sprayed black.
BODYWORK
I started by test-fitting some parts to check how well they went together. It all seemed very precise, especially with the bonnet. I also prepared to mask off the inside the doors. The instructions, in my opinion, offer incorrect paint information for this part. Indeed, photos of the 1976 Golf show that all the inner panels were black and only the contours of the door were grey. The body was then sanded with 1000-grit paper and primed with Tamiya Grey Surface
Primer. For the body colour, I simply used Tamiya TS-17 Metallic Grey. Do not forget to paint the body-colour inner wings within the engine bay in the process. Once dry, I emphasized the door and boot seals with black Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color. The bonnet air vents at the base of the windshield are supposed to be depicted by a decal but I preferred to use the black colour-wash to fill this recessed detail. I then applied the decals to the lower body sides and here
The bodywork was painted with Tamiya Spray TS-17 Gloss Aluminum. The door seals were highlighted with Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color; black.

we find a double challenge; to maintain proper alignment between the decal segments whilst applying Micro Sol softener to allow them to form fully to the body contours. The body parts can then be varnished. I was and still am very impressed by the results obtained by Fabrice Maréchal on his Ebbro 1:24 Renault 4L (TMMI No.235, May 2015). Using his considerable modelling (and photographic) talent, Fabrice pulled off the feat of making a perfectly ordinary car into something rather extraordinary. It was the ideal source of inspiration and I followed his methods for the body of the Golf. Initially the parts were coated with a two-pack polyurethane varnish (PPG D800). Similar clear finishes are available from Hiroboy and others, in packages tailored to modellers. I then waited a good week for the varnish to set hard. Although the final result was satisfactory, I chose to sand the body with

Micro-Mesh in increasingly fine grades. All sanding was done 'wet' and once the last and finest grit had been used, the gloss finish was almost restored. To complete the process, the body was polished with 'Altuglass Polish 1' which erases all but the smallest micro-scratches; the final finish was like a mirror.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT
To begin with, the engine was painted in Alclad II White Aluminum and the cylinder head in Humbrol Satin Black. To add a bit
of overall weathering, I applied Mig Productions 'Dark Wash' on both the aluminium and black areas. I also applied a very light drybrushing of gunmetal on the black side-cover. The engine looked a bit naked without wiring, so I added the ignition cables too. Fixing the wires to the distributor cap head (previously painted red) was a bit fiddly but cyanoacrylate glue did help. Inserting the motor unit into its cradle was a bit complicated because it must fit
squarely between the drive shafts for the engine to sit correctly. The matt black painted radiator was also drybrushed in gunmetal. Although the instructions recommend painting the battery black, I chose instead a dark blue to give a touch of colour. The decals supplied to for some engine ancillaries is a nice touch by Revell. The wheels were sprayed with Alclad II Polished Aluminum with the centre touched in with black and the screws in gunmetal. The tyres are moulded well enough, but a bit like some other parts, engraving is a little soft. The treads were sanded but this was not enough to give the impression of the tyres having been driven on. So I simply rolled them in a little dust...
FINAL ASSEMBLY
The Mk.I Golf had an area of matt black surrounding its rear window, and it is difficult to apply a precise-fitting mask here because the contours of

The ignition cables were made from vinyl tube, using a thicker diameter to fix them to the distributor cap.
the area to be painted. So, after making a simple mask, I applied Humbrol Satin Black. After twenty-four hours of drying, the surplus paint was carefully wiped off with a cloth moistened with white spirit. Using a similar approach, the front windscreen and side window rubbers were also painted Humbrol Satin Black. Then comes the delicate moment with the insertion of the engine compartment and chassis into the bodywork. The instructions recommend you to fit the cockpit first and then insert the frame, but then the engine compartment has no place to go. So, you must insert it into the rear of the chassis only. You then slide the engine in from the front, by spreading out the wheel arches. This allows the simultaneous insertion of the front of the cabin and the engine. I admit that I was afraid to crack the body at any time during this process. Do not forget to put the bonnet in place before inserting the cockpit and the engine, because once the body is on, I don't know if they would be easily extractable. We can then, finally, turn to the last exterior details. The front and rear lights were undercoated
The headlights and tail-lights were painted with Alclad II Chrome. For the grille, Humbrol Coal Black was first applied and then masked off. The headlights were prepared with Humbrol gloss black before the application of Alclad II Chrome.

The engine was subtly 'aged' with Mig Productions Dark Wash, then a drybrushing of Gunmetal on the rocker cover and radiator.

Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat™ Starter Set
The Grumman F4F Wildcat™ was the US Navy’s primary carrier borne fighter aircraft at the start of the Second World War. Characterised by its stubby appearance the Wildcat™ had been developed from Grumman’s successful range of pre-war biplanes and had entered service with the US Navy a year prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. By the time of the crucial battles for Midway and Guadalcanal the F4F-4 model had become the most numerous variant and new tactics enabled American naval and marine pilots to gain the upper hand on the previously all-conquering Mitsubishi Zero.

HE CRIMEA:
SIEGE HOWITZER
W
ith the flurry of unusual kits hitting the market, the various siege weapons used by Axis forces are now becoming available. The Škoda M1916 Siege Howitzer is a particularly interesting weapon, as it was used in both World Wars and by various combatant armies. The siege mortars (howitzers) began development in 1906 in the Škoda works in modern Czechoslovakia, then part of the AustroHungarian Empire. The Model 1911 was followed by the M1916, the subject of this kit from Takom. This version had a longer barrel, and a range of 12,300 metres, served by a crew of around seventeen and some guns were loaned to the German army, others used on the Italian Front. The Germans nicknamed the 12” howitzer ‘Schlanke Emma’ (Skinny Emma) to distinguish it from Big Bertha! During the Inter-War period, these howitzers were distributed amongst various nations, and according to sources the M1916 models was given to Czechoslovakia (seventeen), Romania (sixteen), Yugoslavia (six), while Hungary and Austria retained a further two each by ‘hiding’ them. At the outbreak of WW2, the Wehrmacht seized the Czech weapons, and accumulated others. They were used in attacking Poland (Warsaw area), in France and in the Soviet Union (siege of Leningrad and Crimea). The most noteworthy and extensive use by the German army was in the siege of Sevastopol in the Crimea, where Schwere ArtillerieAbteilungen (Heavy artillery batteries) 624, 641 and 815 used these weapons. The Germans were not the only nation to use the howitzers, and the Hungarian howitzers were set up on the River Don in 1942, but were lost without firing a shot.
ENTER TAKOM
The Takom kit goes together with no difficulty at all, producing an accurate model straight from the box. However, as with any kit, there are various improvements that can be made for maximum
accuracy. Perhaps the most important point to note is that these howitzers were used fully embedded in the ground up to the level of the baseplate. I have not seen any of these weapons used with the whole base structure exposed and it is unlikely that the base could take the stresses without the support of surrounding earth. As a result, modellers may wish to omit parts A1, A2, A10 and A11, so that the howitzer can be posed as if embedded into the soil. Assembly starts with the body of the howitzer itself, and the fit of parts is excellent. Take care to fully remove the seam along the top of B20/B21 when finished, as this join line is very visible.
SMALL ADDITIONAL DETAIL
I added triangular extensions to each side of part B2, finished off with a large nut, as this feature can be seen on photos of the real gun. However, this area is invisible if the howitzer is elevated into a firing position. The only ‘fit’ issue that I encountered was with the breech-opening lever, a large and curiously shaped arm (part C18). When the howitzer is put together, this fouls the side of the cradle (part C1) and prevents the full elevation of the weapon. A small amount of filing would probably resolve this problem. Less easy to deal with is the fact that the rifling is straight and only runs a sort way into the barrel. On a gun with a 12” (30.5cm) calibre, this is a very visible area. A ring of bolts needs to be added to the flange around the barrel, and a mount placed on top of the breech. As the cradle goes together, test fitting makes it clear that the traverse mechanism (part C31) does not align with the fitting on the baseplate (part A12). It is a quick task to use a very sharp blade to slice off the fitting, and move it forward to the correct position. On the right side of the cradle is the mounting for a large crane arm which is used in the assembly of the howitzer in its new position (the weapon is transported in several parts). The part C30 should be drilled out at the top,

mounting. The only other important modification includes lengthening the arm on the elevation handle (part C6) as this is much too short. The gunsight is rather simplified and some extra details can be added here if desired. Fortunately, photos of these howitzers can be found after a brief search on the internet, and many extra parts can be added if desired. For example, lifting eyes can be added to the front and rear of part A12, and a range
of bolts should go to the front of the lower cradle, but these are barely visible.
EXTRA PARTS IN THE BOX
The kit includes the loading platform which was temporarily attached to the rear of the cradle and allowed the crew to ram rounds directly into the breech, achieving a round fired every three to four minutes. Takom also include an antique-looking cart for transporting rounds and lining the rounds with the

loading tray. This cart is carrying a ‘Light Explosive’ round, but the kit also includes a small shrapnel round and a huge heavy piercing’ round. No cartridge cases are provided, but I made one by turning down a short length of plastic tube, following an illustration that I found on the 'Web. The various shells are a slight disappointment, as they have grooves where the real shells have white bands (possibly marking the centre of gravity). The rear of the
shell should have a copper driving band, but again Takom have shown this as a groove. I dealt with these grooves by filling them with plastic strips, and painted the shells accordingly. After much hunting for references, the shells were marked with black bands as appropriate, but it would have been better to get transfers for markings on the shells. The last part included in the kit is a massive box, which has no indication of purpose and no lifting handles. As a result,

this is somewhat suspect. The kit does not include the ramrod or any other tools necessary to fire the weapon, but is otherwise complete.
Painting the model
The options for paintwork are somewhat limited, namely dunkelgrau (grey) for German use in the early part of the war, dark green for Hungarian service, and Dunkelgelb (tan) for German use in a last-ditch defence at Zweibrucken in April 1945. No markings are offered, although the howitzers often carried small white numbers for identification. If using the howitzer for a WW1 setting, typical camouflage patterns would often have been much more interesting, but I found no photographic evidence to support this. I opted for an overall coat of Tamiya XF-24 Dark Grey, with gentle passes of XF-54 sprayed lightly from above to create a 3D
effect, followed by a misting of Johnson’s Klear to give a very slight shine to the paintwork. A dilute wash with dark oil paints, Payne’s Grey and Dark Umber, was allowed to dry thoroughly for several days before drybrushing over highlights using progressively lighter Humbrol grey paints. These techniques, while nothing novel, really bring out the details on an otherwise dull, flat colour scheme. Areas of high wear received paint chips (oil paint dark umber and burnt umber) and a soft graphite pencil was used for areas of worn bare metal. The part of the barrel that slides into the receiver appears to be bare metal, and for this prominent area I used a Mig Productions pigment ‘Gun Metal P231’ rubbed on with a stiff brush. The shells were a bit problematic as a single gunmetal colour would appear too uniform. I chose

off the black bands, and then very lightly overspray with Tamiya Gunmetal X-10. Once dried, the white and copper bands were masked and sprayed. To tie everything together, a light misting of Johnsons’ Klear brought out the effects. The baseplate of the Škoda howitzer saw a great deal of walking to and fro, and being at ground level would get a great deal of mud and dust, as well as worn paint. This effect was created by roughly applying pastel pigments mixed with water, allowing the mix to collect in corners and around fittings. To finish off, a cord needs to run from the lever on the breech-block (C28) and out through the hole in the rear plate (C15). The commander pulled on this to fire the gun.
FINAL THOUGHTS ON THIS KIT
Overall, the final effect was very satisfying, and the
superb Takom kit looks every bit of the brutish WW1 siege howitzer, still lingering in use at the end of WW2. Making the review sample was unknown territory for me, but I’m certainly pleased to have tackled this project. I’m now looking forward to mounting it properly in a base, and showing it in use. ●

KIT PREVIEW BRONCO 1:35 AIRSPEED AS.51 HORSA GLIDER MK.I ● KIT NO.CB35195
SILENT ASSAULT TMMI's Editor examines Bronco's new 1:35 kit of the Horsa, a glider that was used to great effect on D-Day and Operations Market Garden and Varsity
W
e have been eagerly promoting this kit in TMMI for some while and now it's here (to my utter delight), it is clear that Bronco have gone to significant lengths to create a very memorable model. The kit depicts a complete miniature of the WW2 British troop-carrying glider, six of which were famously used on D-Day in Operation Deadstick, the insertion of groups of British troops close to Ranville (‘Horsa’) Bridge on the River Orne and the Bénouville Bridge over the Caen Canal. The was latter
subsequently renamed 'Pegasus Bridge' in honour of the 6th Parachute Regiment, whose emblem is the winged horse. The Horsa – amongst other types – was also a key piece of hardware during Operation Market Garden, the Allies' bold but unsuccessful attempt to capture bridges across the Rhine at Arnhem in the Netherlands. It's an over-used word (by myself in particular!), but the Horsa is a truly iconic design from the Second World War – as significant as the Spitfire and Dakota in my opinion – and this kit is a major landmark in
scale modelling. To have a huge, modern, injectionmoulded plastic model of this wooden glider is fabulous and it's even better that it comes from Bronco, a company well known for its detail and precision. It comes in a deep, 60 x 24cm box and kit parts are spread across no less than twenty sprues of varying dimensions, in grey and clear plastic. A metal nose-weight is included, as well as a modest fret of photo-etched brass, a large sheet of decals (three markings-options) plus another sheet providing pre-cut, self adhesive canopy masks.
Factory-photos of the assembled kit show the impressive interior detail, plus the openable cargo ramp and struts.

MODEL STRUCTURE
The assembly sequence kicks off with cockpit, which is fully detailed inside and covered with the greenhouse-like canopy; thank goodness for those pre-cut vinyl masks! It builds up into a sealed unit that can be placed to one side while the fuselage innards are built and painted. These feature the characteristic exposed formers and the ribbed floor which was strong enough to carry loads that included a Jeep, light howitzer or, of course, a detachment of glider-troops. With the inner 'core' of the fuselage completed, the exterior is clad with outer panels which carry the windows and inner-facing stringer detail. The painting sequence of these structures will require a little planning, but so long as the outer fuselage panels fit well, the procedure should not be too difficult. This unusual construction style could allow one side to be left open so the detailed interior can be viewed after the model is complete. The wings build up conventionally from upper and lower halves (plus individual control surfaces) but Bronco include some detailed ribs at key locations, so the outer wing sections could, in theory, be left off to reveal the internal structure. The whole wing builds up into a single unit which 'drops' onto the completed fuselage, supported by a pair of struts either side. This approach will greatly ease the painting process.
MARKING OPTIONS
Three decal options are included, all for the June 6th 1944 D-Day landings. Two of the options are for RAF gliders (RZ108 'E3' and PW773 'Churchill's Reply') the third is for a USAAF
machine (RF141) with stars and bars insignia. All are in the standard brown/ green/black camouflage but the invasion stripes on the fuselage of the second RAF glider are of a different width to the other two, noted within the instructions. The decals are large (as you'd imagine) and have a satin finish; the usual application procedures apply. Bronco offer numerous sets of 1:35 figures depicting British Paras doing various things and they'll go perfectly with the Horsa. Tamiya's recently issued set will also work well with the kit, as will Jeeps, light howitzers and whatever else was carried and delivered by these fascinating machines.
CRITICISMS?
No kit is perfect of course and the only 'issue' I perceived relates to the amount of airframe structure that is visible through the skin. On the rudder, the 'sagging' effect is over-apparent (image right), to the extent that some filler will be needed to fill the troughs, but on the fuselage and outer cockpit sides – where ribbed and rippled effects can be witnessed in wartime photos (below) – it isn't apparent at all. With some work (and references) this could be replicated, but the effect’s absence is not a deal-breaker for me. Bronco have been very bold in creating this kit and it is wonderful to see it 'in the plastic'. The Horsa is such an icon of WWII that any new kit is appreciated; to have one in 1:35 is a dream come true. Now, we just need a US Waco glider in 1:35 to go with it... ● MN MODEL SPEC BRONCO 1:35 AIRSPEED AS.51 HORSA GLIDER MK.I SCALE; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1:35 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . THE LINCE EFFECT T
he IVECO 'Lince' Light Multi-role Vehicle is yet another military reconnaissance machine named after the Lynx cat; I'd like to think it's because the tufts on the cat's ears resemble aerials, but it's more likely because it's a stealthy predator, which is less fun the ‘ear’ thing. But whatever the reason for the feline sobriquet, this truck was designed with crew protection as a priority, along with off-road mobility in all conditions. It's also a rather good looking vehicle and one that lends itself perfectly to a model kit subject. Italeri's kit is an all-new production and includes cabin interior detail, the seats even coming with photo-etched brass seatbelts. The chassis, whilst largely hidden when the lower hull armour is fitted, is well executed with prop shaft, 4WD gearboxes and exhaust system. The rugged suspension is fully depicted although the steering is moulded in the 'straight-ahead' position only (fairly easy to 'convert' into a steered pose with some judicious tweaks here and there). Onto the body and the detail here is plentiful;
the front-mounted winch with cord for the cable a particularly nice inclusion. Some options are also provided here, in the form differing aerial configurations, cable cutter, open/closed rear door and a choice of roof-top weapons (.50cal M2 HMG and/ or 7.62mm). Four decal options – Italian Army ISAF, Afghanistan 2010, Italian Army Task Force 45, Afghanistan 2006, Spanish Army ISAF Afghanistan 2009 and Croatian Army, EUFOR, Chad 2009. Three colour schemes are on offer here, a NATO three-tone, sand/dark earth and NATO olive-drab. BRITAIN'S BAL PART 2
TMMI’s Editor finally finds time to add a little more to Tamiya’s 1:32 Mosquito...
I
must apologise for the two preceding issues of TMMI with some conspicuous omissions; parts two and three of my Mosquito build! Sheer volume of work prevented me from getting any further with the model and even now, I haven't got a huge amount more done. However, I did manage to build up the engines and marvellous little replicas they are. Thanks to some inventive engineering, Tamiya have achieved a near-perfect fit here and they were pure joy to assemble. It's almost a shame that they will be painted in a satin-black tone as this is notoriously difficult to highlight in a realistic manner using model paints, so a little artistic license might be in order, to show off the fine detail here. The cockpit and fuselage inner faces were given more colour washes and a little drybrushing, which helps to bring out the detail in this area too. Vallejo acrylics – which hand-paint so beautifully – will be used to paint the various cables and other fittings within the interior. The enamel paint was deposited onto a piece of card, allowing most of the solvent to be drawn away. A dry brush was then lightly dabbed into the paint and then flicked over the raised detail, adding highlights as can be seen here.
The cockpit floor has been further ‘dirtied’ down. Next step is to add the various items such as pilot’s seat and navigation gear.

This new sheet of waterslide decals from Hannants’ ‘Xtradecal’ line will work on HK Models’ recent Mk.IV kit and offers markings for one of two RAF and two RCAF machines, plus one for a USAAF machine based in Tunisia 1943. Excellent print quality and correct colours; an attractive alternative to the kit-supplied markings.

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY AIRCRAFT RB PRODUCTIONS 1:32 YOKOSUKA MXY-7 OHKA TYPE 22 â—? KIT NO.RB-K32003
FALLING CHERRY BLOSSOM Gerry Doyle builds RB Productions' all-new 1:32 resin kit of the infamous WW2 'Ohka' Kamikaze rocket aircraft
T
he ironically named Ohka (Cherry Blossom) was a desperate attempt by Japan to stem the advance of Allied forces across the Pacific. The principle being, that you built a manned rocket that was too fast to shoot down, put a pilot in it and pack it with explosives before flying it into a ship. The theory seemed sound apart from the suicide element. Surprisingly, there seemed to be no lack of volunteers to take these missions, however, the

project was not as successful as envisaged. The delivery system of the earlier Type 11 being strapped to the bottom of a slow 'Betty' type bomber until in range resulted in the majority being shot down before deployment. The Type 22 was developed to be piggy backed on the 'Francis' aircraft, which was faster and the rocket could be deployed earlier. The Ohka (after release) would glide until within range and the rocket would be powered up and deliver its 1,350lb payload. Before the end of
the war however, no Type 22s were used in anger. In the past decade, RB Productions has established itself as a leading light in supplying the modelling world with quality aftermarket products and handy tools. The logical (or maybe not) step is to produce a full kit. The Ohka 22 is, on the face of it, a strange place to start, however the type has not been done to my knowledge in 1:32 before and the size of the aircraft lends itself to this scale.
THE KIT
The model is packed into a stout box with a photo of the preserved example at the Smithsonian. On ordering the kit you will be given a link to download instructions. I would advise that you print these off as you will need to refer to them often. So, what do you get? The box is packed with goodies; sixty resin, one clear resin and two vacuum-formed parts are included. The photo-etched sheet has fifty-seven parts. You also get RB Productions

Detail on all parts is excellent with fine panel lines and well defined detail throughout, the cockpit sidewalls being a case in point, the cast on detail is very impressive indeed. The stabilisers and fins are a single casting which is very handy for alignment. The intakes are also commendably thin and fit into their slots very well. on, which is a kit in itself. If you haven't used RB's seatbelts before you will be a little apprehensive but the finished product is well worth the effort. The rocket booster on my kit was a little warped but I wasn't using it anyway so did not get a replacement, though one was offered.

of water. All parts should then be washed thoroughly in warm soapy water. I strongly advise that you read the instructions a few times before you commit saw/ scalpel to the resin. I won't elaborate on this, suffice to say I didn't. I followed the sequence suggested which starts with the engine; the fit is excellent and when painted and assembled fits into the fuselage perfectly. Good start. The cockpit in the real aircraft is very basic, however RB give you every

when drilling out part R31. This is just stunning when painted. Unfortunately, very little of it can be seen when in place. I know from talking to Radu Brinzan (RB Productions' owner) several years ago that he includes every part needed and leaves it up to the modeller as to the amount of detail he/she wants to use. The instrument panel has decal faces which work very well in situ. I test fitted the cockpit floor several times to

make sure I had it correct, it was a bit fiddly getting around the plumbing so a deft hand (not that I have one) is a must. I was never a big fan of etched seats but this example is very nice and builds up well. The seatbelts really set the seat off and look the business when assembled. I used Gator Glue on the end of a cocktail stick on the paper belts themselves but PVA would do just fine. I painted the cockpit IJN Green (Tamiya XF-11) for the main colour. Care must

be taken when closing up as there is a lot to be brought together and test fitting is essential as cyanoacrylate glue is a one time offer. I aligned the fuselage halves as well as I could before committing to glue and got it just about right. Behind the cockpit was perfectly aligned however the nose section was around 0.1mm out. Whether it was me or the mould I don't know but I ended up with a small step on the nose panel lines which was near impossible to rectify. Thank heavens for the red stripe! Masking up to paint the canopy frame requires a very precise application of masking tape strip.

A filling and sanding session followed and I am on of those modellers who enjoys this phase of the build, probably a hang-over from building models in the '70s and '80s. A few external details were glued into place at this point. Attention now turned to the wings and the control surfaces. The ailerons fitted very well and have tiny control links as separate etched parts! The control surfaces were then fitted to the tail sections and all this was then fitted to the fuselage with no major drama. The smaller parts, mass balances etc were left off until the end. I stuffed the vacuum-formed canopy with Blue-Tac before cutting, you get a spare but amazingly I didn't need it. I dipped it in Future and masked it up. RB have given you a nice deep track for the sliding canopy so I fixed a line of rod on the inside face of the frame to fit into the it. The clear resin was also

dipped in Future and came up very clear. I painted the trolly before assembly but test fitting showed that all would fit very well. The main frame needed a lot of cleaning up and has a few delicate parts so be careful.
PAINTING
The real example is finished in all over JN Grey however I decided to give her a two-tone scheme; JN Grey undersides and JN Green on top. I used Tamiya XF-12 and XF-11 for this. I painted the trolly JA Green XF-13 for a bit of variation I simulated the wood for the cradles using XF-57 Buff with burnt umber oil paint, brushed over and then wiped off by degrees until I was happy with the grain; when dry I finished it with clear yellow. I painted the wheel hubs JN Grey and I weathered the trolly with some light washes. The Ohka itself was just given a light panel colour-wash as it was only a

one time flyer and would not get dirty. The decals were an absolute dream and went on with no drama whatsoever. I put a drop of Mr Softer out of habit but I don't think it was needed. The roundel came from the spares box as no national markings are provided. To finish off, all the fiddly bits were painted and fixed in place.
VERDICT
A stunning little kit. It will keep all modellers happy from the first time resin kit builder to the 'I know it's there' brigade. The fit is spot-on and if you take your time and read the instructions there will be no nasty surprises. I think it's well worth the price especially with the weak
Euro at the moment. I wholeheartedly recommend this kit. Did I mention to read the instructions? ●

RESIN IMPROVEMENT, CZECH REPUBLIC
www.res-im.cz This pack contains inner and outer wheels for two wheel stations on a T-34 series vehicle. To replace all of the wheels on one vehicle would involve buying five packs of these wheels. What is included in the pack are finely cast resin parts with very good detail and with plain tyres. The two wheel discs glue together with superglue and line up precisely. Prominent casting marks need to be removed from the tyres’ surfaces, which involves filling and sanding, but the end result is a pair of excellent wheels for creating a bit of variation on a T-34 tank or assault gun. Great castings in resin, good sharp detail, but only enough wheels for a fifth of the wheels of a vehicle, so you could add the wheels randomly to give an impression of a T-34 that had been patched up. CLS 1:35 T-34 WHEELS, VARIANT 1 (35001)
RESIN IMPROVEMENT, CZECH REPUBLIC
www.res-im.cz As with the ‘Variant 1’ set, in the ‘Variant 2’ set we have inner and outer roadwheels for two axles on a T-34, cast in fine, green/grey polyurethane resin. No air bubbles were present in the castings and the detail is very fine. The wheels in this set have lightening and cooling holes in the perimeter of the tyres plus a slight ‘tread’ on their outer edges. The wheel hubs are of the type with no reinforcing plate in the centre, making them suitable for mid to late WW2 vehicles. The two halves glue together with superglue and line up precisely, as before. Again, we have clean castings in resin with sharp detail but enough for only one small part of a vehicle. CLS 1:35 T-34 WHEELS, VARIANT 2 (35001)
HAULER, CZECH REPUBLIC
www.hauler.cz A feature of many modern industrial sites is a collection of ‘stillages’, or strong crates for storing components used in assembly, for example. ‘Mars’ is one company making such items. The little pack HLU35076 from Hauler contains two such crates cast in resin, with superb and very sharply represented details inside and out. To create the corner supports – which allow the crates to be stacked and to be lifted by cranes – the pack comes with etched-brass legs which exactly correspond to the style seen in photos. The resin boxes have casting plugs that cover most of the lower surface and these will need to be removed using a saw or power tool to cut away a fair amount of resin without damaging the beautiful stillage boxes. Take care when doing this, to avoid inhaling resin dust. The end result is most certainly worth it, however, with excellent potential for dioramas involving factories or repair shops. Removal of casting plug will need a lot of care. CLS 1:35 MARS CONTAINERS (HLU35076)
BRONCO MODELS, CHINA
www.cn-bronco.com This little model consists of two parts, each one superbly detailed. The heart of the model is the 2.8cm schwere Panzerbusche, which was a high-velocity anti-tank weapon operating on the squeeze-bore principle. This involved a carefully machined barrel of slowly reducing diameter from 28mm to 20mm, which crushed the round as it was fired and allowed very high pressures to build up behind it, resulting in much higher muzzle velocity. First produced in late 1940, the weapon became rare as the war progressed, as Germany found it impossible to obtain the tungsten needed for the projectiles. The last gun was made in 1943. The gun was produced on a light conventional carriage (as in this kit) and on an even smaller carriage for paratroop use. The second part of this model is the special trailer to carry the gun. This trailer is not named by Bronco, but anyone wanting to research it will need to look up Sonder Anhänger (1 achs.) für schwere Panzerbüchse 41 (Sd. Ah. 32/2). The kit builds up into an accurate representation of the trailer, requiring very little additional detailing to make into a first-class model. For both the gun and the trailer, the wheels are moulded separately in order to get an outstanding representation of the tyre tread on all surfaces. It is worth noting that Bronco has already released the gun on the paratroop mount, along with its own special lightweight trailer: SonderAnhänger (1 achs.) für schwere Panzerbüchse 41 auf leichter Feldlafette (Sd.Ah.32/3), as kit CB35034. This gun and mount was used widely, and not only by the Fallschirmjäger paratroops. A super little model with many options for use in all theatres from 1941. The instructions suggest that the gun was transported on the trailer with the trails open and they should be closed. CLS 1:35 2.8CM SPZB41 ON LARGER STEEL-WHEELED CARRIAGE, WITH TRAILER (CB35141)

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY AIRCRAFT ITALERI 1:32 F-104G/S STARFIGHTER ● ITEM NO.2502
THE BELGIAN STARFIG
W
hat a beautiful kit we have here! At the end of a gloomy and rainy 2013, there came a ray of sunlight from Italeri that truly brightened up the modelling world! The F-104G in 1:32 has already been tackled by Revell and Hasegawa but these kits are quite dated now, although some modellers (especially amongst our Belgian friends) have achieved splendid results from them. Italeri's model is an all-new production
and, whilst not fault-free, is a big step up from the older releases. It includes many options, almost perfect sub-assemblies, plastic that's pleasant to work with and beautiful decals by Cartograf. The instructions are comprehensive and the accompanying booklet of colour photos is quite useful. The avionics and gun compartments can be displayed in the open position and the separately moulded flaps and leading edge are posable, although
these are generally neutral on a plane at rest. A complete engine on its dolly is provided, the whole tail being removable to show it off. A photo-etched set is provided but its usefulness is somewhat dubious; I will return to this later on. We are spoiled by no less than ten markings-choices: five Italian schemes plus one Greek, German, Belgian, Dutch and Canadian are offered. 101 Starfighters – built under license by SABCA – served with the
Belgian Air Force from 1963 to 1983, replaced by the F-16 and I chose the Belgian markings as a way of honouring my generous northern neighbours (I live in France) as friendly and talented people. For documentation, the 'Lock-On' book by Verlinden Productions, largely devoted to Belgian F-104s, is invaluable as is the recently published book from Daco Publications, which covers every detail of this wonderful machine.

Plastic strip and wiring was used to up-detail the avionics bays, not forgetting to detail inside the covers.
V COCKPIT The cockpit tub is reasonably
well detailed, but I replaced the seat with a KMC item (thank you Jean Paul!) and I added extra detail to the tub with plastic section and various gauges of lead wire. The instrument panel is provided in both plastic and photo-etched brass and the moulded part is way better detailed than its metal equivalent, so I chose plastic version, adding a few visible knobs and levers. The tub's overall colour is light grey, applied to the lower surfaces with the console faces painted black. This was all drybrushed and colour-washed to liven it up a bit, without making it look like a Christmas tree. As the option is included, the avionics compartment behind the seat will be depicted open. Here, it is essential to follow the documentation provided by Italeri so that the cabling and other details can be added.
UNDERCARRIAGE
Nothing special to report here, except the addition of cables on the main landing gear. The fit of parts was perfect. The wheels (two different types are included) come with slightly weighted tyres. I felt they were a little narrow in cross-section, so I fixed this by inserting 0.5mm plastic card between the two halves. This was also done for the front wheel. The speed brakes were cemented in the closed
The avionics tray was painted with acrylic colours, including some data plates unfortunately not included on the decal sheet.
position, but they sat too low in the fuselage, so self-adhesive aluminium foil was applied over them 'in situ' to raise the their outer faces to become flush with the surrounding fuselage. The undercarriage was painted simply with aluminium-coloured acrylic paint and patinated with Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color. Considering what will remain visible thereafter this was good enough. The tyres were brush-painted with Vallejo dark grey and lightly weathered.
The cockpit-tub was lightly detailed The rear wall was detailed with some with a KMC joystick handle and wiring and pipework. On the instrument some plastic strip. panel, a hand-grab was added plus the two T-shaped levers clearly visible in photographs of the aircraft.
The tub was painted light grey, the consoles in satin black. The dust-cover of the handle was painted in a light beige shade. The buttons were touched in with acrylic using fine brush.
The resin KMC seat received the pilot’s oxygen line on the right side, before being primed in light grey. An oval handle was fitted on the right side of the head rest.
The seat was painted with Tamiya Acrylic then given a dark colour-wash. Then, some scuffing was applied using a piece of foam dipped in dark grey paint.
The instrument panel underwent the same treatment. The dials were painted freehand and covered with a drop of gloss varnish. The photo-etched set for the upper part was not used. Curiously, the open bezels on the brass part are not aligned with the instruments and look flat compared to the plastic part.

LOADS
Typically, I opted to use the extra underwing ordnance. Once assembled (no filler need), the braces were replaced with photo-etched parts and glued on with cyano. The undersides were painted Tamiya XF-19 Sky Grey and the tops in XF-61 Dark Green. The whole lot were then copiously weathered using a sponge, plus a brown and black colour-wash. These elements were placed very low on the aircraft, so we can add dirt and various impacts suffered during take-offs and landings. A layer of Future polish preceded the application of markings.
The completed tub awaits its seat.
The seat was shoehorned in; it would be fixed permanently at the very end fitting to prevent breakage.
BELGIAN COLOURS
The NATO-type camouflage consists of four colours, re-created on the model with Tamiya XF-19 Light Grey (underside), XF-61 Dark Green, XF-67 NATO Green and Mr Hobby H66 Sandy Brown for the upper areas. The boundaries of camouflage were applied freehand, starting with the lighter shades and working through to the darker ones. The wings and fuselage were treated separately which greatly facilitated the handling of this long 'cigar'. For weathering, Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color was used on the structural lines and then wiped off with a cotton swab. Some panels were treated with pigments and a sponge was used to simulate impacts from 'runway shrapnel' on the most susceptible areas, such as gear doors, maintenance panels etc. A layer of clear polish (Future, or similar) was applied in preparation for the decals. The rather thick national insignia were dealt with by Micro Sol. Once dry, a further application of clear varnish created a consistent finish between paint and markings. By using light layers, one can obtain a satisfactory satin finish.
U
The coaming was detailed with lead sheet and cabling from various gauges of solder wire.
The sidewalls of the cockpit were detailed with plastic card, shaped with a scalpel.
The rear part of the canopy was up-detailed, using references as a guide.
Of course, this part was painted and weathered before installation and masking of the transparent part. A drybrush and some pigments give it some depth.
The hatch for the braking parachute The fit was checked before painting. was cut neatly from the fuselage and redone with better detail in plastic card. On the inside, photo-etched was used.
The main landing gear legs received brake lines from lead wire with stretched sprue supports. The joints were detailed with small styrene washers.
The rims were painted metallic chrome with Vallejo Dark Rubber for the tyres. A heavy black colour-wash using Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color was then applied.

UP V FINISHING It was now time to proceed
to the final stages. The front undercarriage leg was strongly secured at this point and its various pistons cemented in place. The lenses of the landing lights were drilled out and the hollows filled with either Crystal Clear or 'Calm Water' from Vallejo (FX001). As it dries, the product forms a transparent film. The internal frame of the canopy was rebuilt with 1mm lead wire, shaped and glued in place. I added a hand-grab on the right side plus the two mirrors provided on the photo-etched set, before painting it all in light grey. The canopy was fitted in the open position, as were the dorsal avionics bay panels, aligning them with the open canopy hood. The strut was made from partially stripped electrical wire and painted matt black. The external canopy lever was redone in plastic card, glued and painted bright yellow, with black stripes applied with a fine brush. The main undercarriage doors were then glued in place and the wings fixed to the fuselage. The various FOD protectors were made from plastic card and painted red; small paper 'remove before flight' tags were fitted in the correct locations using a piece of fine wire (data cable or from a TV antenna). Phew... The beast on wheels was finally done!
U
The fuselage was painted freehand, following outlines drawn with a pencil. It started with the sand, then the light green and finally the dark green.
The mottled paint effect is quite noticeable on the forward fuselage.
The entire model was given a treatment of Dark Wash.
The electronic compartment panels were painted sand and patinated with the sponge, using buff and sepia.
The national insignia are somewhat thick, but sank into the panel lines after an intensive treatment with Micro Sol.
The cockpit emergency release handle was redone in plastic strip and then painted in bright yellow, black stripes applied with a fine brush. The decal was trimmed once fully dry.

A probe cover was made with plastic card and then replicated via resin casting.
The covers were glued in place with cyano, then the photo-etched locks were fitted.
The air intake FOD covers were made with 0.75mm plastic card, their edges glued and a held in place with toothpicks while the cement cured.
The covers were then painted with X-7 Tamiya Flat Red before light weathering.

for a kit, much appreciated by many modellers. It is easy enough to build for model-makers with less experience, but those who wish to superdetail it can do
so, particularly if they have access to Daco's fantastic book on the aircraft. I'd like to say a huge thank you to my friends Patrick Bouclans and Patrick Spitaels for their spontaneous help with this project and to my wife

MODELLING PROJECTS 4TH US ARMORED DIVISION IN FOLLIGNY
dIORAMA IDEAS...
SOME CALVADOS, MONSIEUR? A famous scene from a small Normandy village, 1944
I
n this well-known and very photogenic image taken in late July, 1944, we see elements of the 25th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron of the 4th US Armored Division advance through in the Norman town of Folligny, eleven miles north of Avranches and some eight miles to the east of Granville. Their passage has been temporarily slowed by the generosity of the townsfolk, who offer the GIs some refreshment in the form of (what appears to be)
Calvados, the deliciously potent Normandy apple brandy. The wrecked Opel Blitz was an ammunitionsupply truck for a 20mm Flak belonging to the SS Flak Artillerie Abteilung 2 of the 2.SS-Panzer-Division ‘Das Reich’. As the column consists of M8 Greyhound armoured cars, an M3A1 halftrack, Jeeps and a Opel, this scene could be recreated in 1:35 using Tamiya kits alone, plus some buildings from MiniArt and figures from Masterbox and MiniArt. ●
In this image from Google Street View, we can see the exact spot where the wartime photo was taken, showing that it has barely changed in over seventy years. The central median leads back to a crossroads between the D294 (east/west) and D35 (north/south). The burnt-out building to the right has a new roof and the unusual structure with the painted concrete facade further up the road remains unaltered. www.google.com

We are presented with an extremely authentic bodyshell with all the correct bumps, bulges, flares and cut-outs in place, plus an interior that has everything you need to create a realistic effect, minus cables etc. The seats come with full harnesses in woven black fabric with photo-etched buckles and maker’s logos and the multi-part rollcage is an excellent replica of the real thing. The grilles over the various vents across the body are represented in the best possible way; photo-etched metal, as are the brake disc faces and rear wing struts. The kit comes in the familiar grey plastic favoured by this maker, and is equipped a set of glue-together, individual track links with separately moulded guide horns, a neat touch. Surface detail is exemplary in all areas and fit of parts appear to be up to Trumpeter’s usual high standard. Photo-etched parts are provided for the screens over the engine-deck cooling panels, as well as a length of braided copper wire for the towing hawser. MN

A clear sprue is supplied for the various vision devices and a sheet of photo-etched brass provides the engine screens, sections of treadplate, tool-clamps and other small fittings. A length of braided copper wire and waterslide decals complete the set. WWII GERMAN 12.8CM FLAK 40 ZWILLING www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 • MATERIALS: IM, PE, PC, WS • KIT NUMBER; 2023 Takom are currently picking some extremely interesting subjects and one of their latest is the mighty twin 12.8cm ‘Flak 40’ antiaircraft gun. This gun ultimately ended up firing from the vast flak towers in Berlin, Hamburg and Vienna. It could reach a maximum vertical range of over 48,000 feet, so no Allied aircraft was safe. Takom’s kit is moulded in grey polystyrene and comes with a hexagonal plinth on which to mount it. A separate circular mount is also included, should one wish to fit the gun in a diorama. As you’d expect, the guns can elevate and traverse. Photo-etched mesh panels are provided for the crew platforms and this adds a touch of realism to the lower areas of the model. Aside from the lathe-turned gun barrel and excellent one-piece tracks, the model also comes with a mantlet cover moulded from a flexible material that will allow a tight fit to the turret, plus some very fine PE mesh for the turret bins. The suspension is a little overengineered with lateral torsion bars and the while the driver’s station is nicely detailed, it’ll be almost totally hidden with the turret on. This is a good looking kit with tons of external detail. MN

DARREN NEELY, PANZERWRECKS www.panzerwrecks.com ISBN 978-1-908032-11-9 The latest volume from Panzerwrecks has arrived at TMMI and this time, it's not just about wrecked WW2 German armour, but focuses more attention on US tanks and other vehicles, documenting them as they advanced into Europe, following Operation Overlord on June 6th 1944. Fans of the M4 Sherman will relish the imagery here; it's certainly not the only US tank depicted, but the photos of them are fantastic and really stimulate the imagination; just in time for Tamiya's new-tool M4A3E8. Other US armour covered by the book includes the M18 Hellcat, M10 Tank Destroyer, 75mm HMC, M3A1 halftrack, M5 High Speed Tractor, T26E3 Pershing, M7 Priest, M32 ARV, M29 Weasel, M36, M5A1 and more, plus Jeeps galore. German vehicles are covered too of course and we are treated to some detailed views of the Panther, Jagdpanther, Hetzer, Hummel, Sturmgeschutz, Sd.Kfz.251 halftrack and more. All photos are in pin-sharp black and white and printed in landscape format on gloss paper which really shows up the whole range of tones from pure black, subtle greys to the bright white of the paper. There are so many diorama ideas here it's hard to know where to start, suffice to say that if you need a source of inspiration for WW2 European dioramas, this new production is the place to look. Highly recommended. MN

The Editor’s Page... The Editor will not be selling his personal ‘library’ any time soon...
BOOKS, BOOKS, LOVELY BOOKS!
I have been collecting, or should that be ‘accumulating’ books on military aviation, ground power, science-fiction and more since I was in my early teens and I have built my miniature library up to a respectable size. During that time of course, the internet has come along, offering near-instant references for many model subjects and I frequently dip into the mighty ‘www’ when researching the colour of cockpits, the mechanicals of undercarriage bays, oil spots on tank gearboxes, shades of camouflage and the arrangement of marking schemes and more. But despite having this information so easily to hand, I would never give up my books. They are not only marvellous reference sources, but I also treasure their physical presence, the quality of their photographs, the smooth texture of the paper, plus – of course – I appreciate reading an authoritative text, often lacking on internet sources. I love the fact that I can sit in a quiet room, select a book from the shelf and read it in time-honoured fashion without adverts and other infuriating distractions popping up. My working day is spent almost entirely at a computer screen (and the model bench if I can find the time) so looking at pages lit by reflected light as opposed to millions of backlit pixels is relaxing rather than stress-inducing. So, I shall carry on buying books to add to my shelves and I’ll relish those lovely heavy tomes with their art-paper and pure black ink printing. Analogue or digital? It’s a close-call for me! See you again on November 19th editor@tamiyamodelmagazine.com
