O

ver the course of racing motorcycle development there have been many ‘experimental’ designs and the one that most captured my eye was the Honda NSR500 from part of the 1984 season. The design of this bike puts the engine above the fuel tank and the exhaust expansion chambers above the engine, making the bike look upside down compared to the traditional configuration. The theory was that with the fuel tank sitting low and the exhaust high, the centre of gravity would be lower and thus a desirable asset. The bike was raced by Freddie Spencer and despite his amazing talent and best efforts it was clear to see that the design had many issues. The problem lay with the underslung fuel tank, which, by lowering the centre of gravity, also affected weight transfer under braking and acceleration which was not generating enough force onto the front and rear tyre, thereby reducing grip. Heat build-up from the engine exhaust system was also a problem as it heated the air going into the carburettors. The positioning of the expansion chambers themselves also made it difficult to check and change spark plugs and to undertake fine tuning of the carburation. After the first few races, Freddie was losing touch with Eddie Lawson who was the championship leader, so the decision was made for Honda to go back to their traditional configuration. As a result this bike was only raced for a few rounds of the 1984 season before being retired. Despite its short lifespan, there were a couple of different configurations of this bike that I found while searching for reference. My build uses the Tamiya kit and it’s based on the early ‘prototype’ version. Thankfully, on the whole, Tamiya got this right in terms of details but with that said, there was some scratchbuilding of parts and additions. With most reference pictures you will find of this motorcycle they will be of the later ‘developed’ version which is instantly noticeable by the venting holes on the tank as well as different vent configuration on the side cowlings. The other differences include an alternative configuration for the rear brake calliper and the black coils attached to the sides of the frame are in different locations. If you did want to emulate the latter version of this bike then you can look up Model Factory Hiro who manufacture this kit, albeit much more expensive and I believe the model itself is very difficult to find as well.

PLAN AND ADJUSTMENTS/ V MY MODIFICATIONS NEEDED FOR THE BUILD

So enough of the history and on with the build! My plan for this build was to build a ‘hyper’ detailed version of this kit. That meant that there were lots of small intricate modifications as well as large very noticeable ones. To hyperdetail, you need to look at wiring and getting the correct scale diameter tubing as well as the colours of the metals and various parts had to be spot on based on reference. Starting from the frame and rear swing arm, I added lots of welds and filled the inner side of the frame. The clutch was a mix of kit parts and the Top Studio clutch set. The fuel tank was also detailed with more weld lines to depict the 1:1 version. The rear-sets were detailed up with a mix of PE, and kit parts. I added a working PE chain with PE sprockets from Top Studio. The front brakes were PE from Hobby Design and front brake callipers were detailed with added parts to the kit parts. The stator mechanism, was heavily modified from kit form. The engine itself was heavily detailed with some added scratchbuilt parts near the carburettors, based on 1:1 photos. The steering damper was detailed with a mix of Top Studio components plus the kit parts. Front forks were modified with scratchbuilt tie-wraps and I also used the Tamiya front fork set. The handlebars and instrument cluster were also both heavily modified and detailed over the kit-form. There was also lots of turned and PE miniature nuts and bolts and connectors used throughout all the various parts of the bike.

The frame was back-filled with epoxy putty and then sprayed with Alclad 2 Polished Aluminium

Top Studio make PE chain sets for many of the popular Tamiya motorcycle kits; some modifications and changes were required for this specific model

The fuel tank’s weld seams were enhanced, then airbrushed with Tamiya TS-30

The rear brake, revealing the metal rotor faces and other detail enhancements added by the author

Here is a comparison between both completed brake rotors; on the left is before and right after a light colour-wash. This shows the importance of ‘washes and how they can improve and amplify the detail in the work you are doing The author used Hobby Design PE parts for part of the rear-sets, but modified the PE parts so he could re-use some of the original plastic parts

For the clutch, the author used the Top Studio Clutch Set (TD23147), not strictly the correct set for this bike but after some heavy modifications it can be made to work

FRAME, SWINGARM AND PETROL TANK

The weld lines were created with some Mr Hobby Mr Surfacer 500, I painted it relatively thick along where I wanted to show a line. Once it started drying I used a metal rod with a 45 degree angle tip to create the welds by just making indents with the rod. Tamiya left out a lot of welds, so this part of the job was pretty time consuming. The frame was filled with Tamiya Epoxy Putty and then painted with Alclad Polished Aluminium. The same was done for the rear swing arm and the fuel tank was painted with Tamiya TS-30, decanted and sprayed through my airbrush. It is also important to note that the Michelin logo that goes on the rear swing arm is not provided in the kit, so I got the optional decal set from Tabu. I cut off the plastic moulded parts for the rear chain adjusters in order for them to accommodate the PE chain adjusters. Careful checking of clearances and fit was required because of the various modified parts that were being used. As with anything that requires cutting, always measure twice so you only have to cut once!

IGNITION STATOR AND ROTOR (OR MAGNETO)

This part was heavily modified, I wasn’t happy with the standard kit part as it looked way too simple and if you just painted it like that it would be difficult to make it look authentic. I first cut out the moulded rotor arm, then cut out the four coils that are underneath the rotor arm. I then took some metal tubing, cut to size and painted copper which were inserted in the gaps I made for them. I then used some scrap PE metal and cut it with my Dremel to make the shape of the rotor. I used some turned metal bolts to enhance the detail and I also added 0.4mm wiring of different colours based on reference.

COWLINGS

The cowlings were painted with a combination of Zero paints Honda NSR500 1984 Red & White (ZP-1238) and the Blue was Tamiya TS-15 decanted and sprayed through an airbrush. I strongly suggest not to use the blue decals in the kit, they are very fragile but more importantly if you do get them to work without tearing you

will end up with lots of creases which will affect the final look.

ENGINE

I decided to go a little heavy with the detailing here as the final product will be displayed without the cowling on. Many modifications and corrections were made, if you have been reading this article you will see how I did the clutch and stator. In addition to these I added some scratchbuilt parts to where the air intakes are, the white plugs and the reddish/brown tubing relate to the fuelling of the bike.

EXHAUSTS AND EXPANSION CHAMBERS

I used reference from the Honda Museum's NSR500 to match the exhausts, I used various Alclad 2 metal shades to achieve the different metal shades on the exhaust, the Alclad 2 colours I used were pale burnt metal, hot metal sepia, hot metal red, hot metal blue, transparent orange, pale gold, steel, exhaust manifold and jet exhaust. Total time of painting was around about one hour, so it wasn’t a quick job! To finish it all off I added exhaust springs which I slightly pulled

U

The ‘upside-down’ nature of the 1984 NSR500 is evident here; the exhausts over the top and the fuel tank underneath the engine

The radiator was fitted with spring-clips on its water hoses and an overflow pipe at the filler cap

The aftermarket clutch has been fitted; its plates and linkage can be seen here

The engine was supported on a brass wire support frame during assembly, to limit handling

Above and below; multiple layers of translucent and metallic Alclad 2 colours were airbrushed over the exhausts to create the heat-stained look seen here. The final effect is astonishingly realistic

Many extra detail parts were used on the Honda’s engine including spark-plug caps (blue), fuel piping and intake mask covers

FULL-BUILD: MOTORCYCLE RACING TAMIYA 1:12 1984 HONDA NSR500 ● KIT NO.14121

This model was assembled on a ‘Motojig’, available from eBay by searching for; ‘marcomotodesign’

V apart to depict some tension in the

spring. The exhaust silencers were finished with Tamiya TS-30 Silver Leaf decanted and sprayed through my airbrush, then I used Mr Hobby Top Coat Semi-Gloss to dull the sheen off a bit. Turned bolts were added as well as the weld lines and finally a pin wash to bring out the details.

FRONT FORKS

For the front forks lots of extra details were added and a little bit of scratch building too. I did notice that if you use the detail up parts for the front fork then at the top of the trees the

14

shock adjusters don’t fit correctly, so I decided to use the kit suspension struts and do some modifications to enable me to use some of the detail up parts for this kit. Lots of turned bolts were used and the blue ones were painted with Alclad Transparent Blue. I sprayed the shock bodies a mix of Alclad Steel (approximately one part) and Alclad Pale Burnt Metal (approximately five parts). The rest of the forks were painted with Tamiya X-18 Semi-Gloss Black. The tie wraps around the black 'Showa' covers were made from 0.13mm Evergreen styrene clear sheet (No.9005). I lightly sanded

the styrene to give it a cloudy look and in order to make them secure I drilled holes into the shock bodies to enable me to anchor the strips and put tension through them.

BRAKE ROTORS AND CALLIPERS

I chose to use the Hobby Design detail up set for the front and rear brake rotors because when compared with the kit versions they look much more authentic. Each rotor half is six pieces which must be assembled precisely with CA glue. I used a mix of Alclad 2 Pale Burnt Metal with Alclad 2 Aluminium to get the correct shade for

June 2018 TMMI 272

the rotor carriers, then used 320-grit sandpaper to scuff the disk surfaces in a circular motion to give it a slightly used look.

FRONT AND REAR WHEELS AND TYRES

Abundant additional details were applied to the rear suspension arm (chain adjuster and more) plus the front end (cabling, micro screws, weld seams and more), adding up to a high level of realism

The tyres were given a used look by scuffing the contact surface with 180-grit sandpaper. After sanding and getting the desired amount of wear on the tyre, I washed the tyres with warm soapy water, dried them and applied an oil paint wash to the sanded part of the tyre. I left the oil 'wash to dry on the tyre for as long as possible (three to four days before touching them). I then applied the Michelin sidewall decals and weathered the sidewall decals by applying some charcoal with a paint brush.

DASHBOARD

The author’s model is a work of art, even with the bodywork off

A high quality two-part gloss clearcoat provided the perfect finish for the cowling

The electronics box that sits underneath the speedo was pretty heavily modified and very fiddly to work with! In hindsight I should have cut off the front frame section from where the steering tube is so it would have allowed me to work on the speedo and electronics box. Nevertheless I managed to complete it and I was quite happy with how it came out. As for reference pics, I couldn’t find very much showing the wiring routing so some logical thinking was used to try to figure out the wiring paths. The grips and handle section were heavily modified. On the righthand side, the way Tamiya have routed all the wiring is wrong in some parts and simplified in other parts. I first cut off the throttle cable housing and turned it through ninety degrees so that one side was on top of the brake lever and the other side was below, as shown in my reference pics. I then got rid of the standard brake fluid reservoir connector and made the correct part out of 0.8mm solder wire. On the left hand side I got rid of the kit's clutch adjuster and replaced it with turned metal parts. I also added the adjuster lock and changed the push button next to the grip to a metal turned button.

Mark Stearney at Motojigs: The first person who inspired me to build bikes and a great friend, he is also the inventor of the awesome Motojig. If you build bikes then the Motojig should be the most important tool in your workshop! The Motojig in my pics for this build are the second ones ever made (first was Mark’s) and they have evolved considerably since then Peter Wingfield (RIP): Another guy who totally inspired me to achieve more and build better, he was also a great person to get advice from. ●

TECHSPEC... Despite of its inverted packaging, the 1984 Honda NSR500 retains classic racing bike lines

V I applied a little varnish to the brake

levers on both sides as references showed that the levers are shinier than the rest of the hand controls. I also added lots of PE and bolts to further enhance the realism.

CONCLUSION, INCLUDING PROS AND CONS

Overall this is a great kit to build, but because of the issues with the blue decals, I would suggest it be built by the more experienced modeller. Some things to keep in mind when building this model: Do not use the blue decals for the cowlings, they are difficult to work with and you will not achieve a painted-on finish. The correct colour, which is pretty much an exact match to the decals, is Tamiya TS-15. You will

still need to use the decals to create templates of the blue sections so you can make masks for them. Where the exhaust ends join the back box, they are a little short, but luckily I mocked it all up and was able to fix that problem. I also found in my kit that there was a large gap on the right hand side of the bike on the lower section of the radiator where it connects to the pipe. If you want to ensure that the main parts of the bike are true to the real machine, you need to adjust the throttle cables section on the right hand side grip, they need to be turned ninety degrees to match the 1:1 version

Please note, we have obscured the swastika emblems on this model to comply with regulations in certain countries where Tamiya Model Magazine is sold

he Ju87 Stuka is one of the most famous aircraft ever. Prior the Second World War, the Ju87 fought during the Spanish Civil War. During the Second World War, the Ju87 operated in a range of different roles, first as a dive bomber and then as a tank buster and it was not only flown only by the Luftwaffe but also by a number of other belligerents including Italy, fighting in almost every theatre of operations. So many histories of this aircraft have been written that I believe it doesn't need any longer presentation. This kit is a replica of the second major operational version of the Stuka, characterised by an enlarged operational range. Like most modellers of my generation, I spent a lot of time in my younger years buried in the Airfix catalogue; in the '70s, it as a big source of inspiration. At the time, it was mostly about 'the one and true scale' but the place where I dreamt most were the pages dedicated to the very large 1:24 kits and in particular to the biggest kit of all, a Stuka portrayed in a deep, almost vertical dive. Such a huge kit was supposed to offer plenty of incredible detail, to be as close as possible to the real thing. Now, way too many years later, we can enjoy a kit with comparable levels of detail in a much smaller scale. The box art captures again the feeling of this famous aircraft; as usual with Airfix, it tells you a story. Inside the box we find a decal sheet packed with all the markings needed for one of two aircraft and many well moulded sprues. Parts are crisp and well formed with very good detail and the instructions are very well done. As is now usual with Airfix, we have a multi-page booklet clear and detailed build diagrams and colour call-outs. The almost ninety stages are easy to understand but I strongly advise not to jump from one stage to another. In addition, you need to decide which of the two final configurations you like the best. For once, I did not decide for a fully open engine, given that I like so much the archaic shape of the Stuka’s forward fuselage.

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY AVIATION AIRFIX 1:48 JUNKERS JU87B2/R2 STUKA ● KIT NO.A07115

OFF V STARTING I would like to say that

construction starts with the fuselage interior, but I really do not know if this is the case. Airfix supplies something more than the simple cockpit floor. Instead, we have a quite complex structure (part A25), which, among the other things, helps the wings achieve the right dihedral. As a result, these first stages of construction are very different from the standard of World War Two quarter-inch scale kit, because the cockpit is not simply sandwiched between the fuselage halves. The extensive canopy glazing means that much of cockpit is visible, so it is worth taking some additional time in detailing all these interior parts. Some crew harnesses are simply mandatory. My choice fell on some Eduard photo-etched, pre-painted belts, secured with a little cyanoacrylate, not forgetting the observer/gunner seat. For the additional detailing of the cockpit I took advantage of many of the small etched parts included into Eduard's 'Big-Ed' Set for the Airfix Stuka (ED 49166). The rear-firing MG15 gun was fed by magazines hanging from the fuselages sides and all these parts all well represented by Airfix. Also the canister for the empty shells is a good representation of the real one. However, the level of detail reached available with the Eduard Brassin MG15 gun (648085) is far superior, making for a really worth addition. I started airbrushing the interior parts with RLM02 (Mr Hobby H70). While correct, this colour is a bit too light but allows for some depth, given that soon after I applied a darker mix of the same grey. This last coat was applied in small patches, trying to keep the larger colour to the centre of the interior surfaces. Afterwards, it was time for some detail painting using a fine brush and some very bright colours, like blue, red, and yellow. I like to get as much colour into the cockpit as possible, because the eye seems always drawn to the interior of aircraft. The simple application of a coat of RLM02 will not allow adequate differentiation between highlights and shadows. If not complemented by colour variations, simple tone variations would leave things looking very uninteresting.

20

Above and below; the main cockpit structures have been painted and are being test-fitted here

Eduard’s photo-etched, pre-painted belts were secured with a little cyanoacrylate, not forgetting the observer/gunner seat (above)

The black dials contrast well against the RLM02 grey

Airfix have done an excellent job of the Stuka’s cockpit, it only really needs seat harnesses and a few other small items

The wings are an excellent fit to the fuselage and are strongly braced thanks to internal struts

To display the Stuka’s wing gun bay, the access panel will need cutting out with a sharp knife; a Swann-Morton scalpel is the ideal instrument for this operation

'THAT' CANOPY

The cockpit glazing was masked off at this stage, given that the internal framework is painted with the same interior colour and, as a result, must be applied first. When all these interior parts were fully dry, I applied some Vandyke brown oil colour-wash, taking care to do this very cautiously, mostly in the most recessed areas. Blending it into the painted surface with a clean dry

brush was the next step. This may seem like a lot of trouble, but it is really not. Testing the fuselage halves together and then over and around all these interior parts showed no fit problem at all. In a very unusual fashion, the time to add the instrument panel comes only after the gluing together of the fuselage halves and interior parts. For the

instrument panel I could not resist using an item by Yahu Models (YMA4856). Maybe I am getting lazy, given all the pre-painted stuff that lately I am using in my builds, but the look of these detail sets is simple amazing. The wings are next and this is an area where this kit reaches new standards, and not only for the sturdy engineering. In a

smart and striking difference with other kits of the Ju 87, the flaps have not been moulded integrally with the wings. The flaps and the various small bits replicating the flap actuators, control horns, and push rods are faithfully reproduced and they can be added at the very end of the build. This is something important, given that otherwise they would be easily snapped off and lost during the painting processes.

U

The brown over-spray significantly changes the look of the early-war camouflage applied by the Junkers for the Luftwaffe

Underneath the later-applied brown camouflage, we can just make out the original two-tone splinter scheme

The engine module was left off the model to make the painting processes easier; it’s an easy fit later on

BAY DETAIL V GUN While I opted to not show

the engine, I decided for an open wing gun-bay access panel as shown in step 26. The wing gun detail is more than adequate and would have been a pity not to show off at least one of them. Another strong point of this kit are the tail control surfaces, a multi-part affair offering the possibility to set the elevators slightly angled, like on a real parked Stuka. Again, take your time and follow the instructions. The oil cooler assembly allows for a lot of detail. The instructions indicate that the exhausts should be fitted at this stage but honestly, I would have preferred to leave them off until the airbrushing of the airframe was completed, for easier painting. The oil cooler itself is detailed in the front but not so much on the rear. In any case, the rear of the oil cooler is barely visible. The general build went very smoothly with no fit issues; it was time to deal with the minor components. I do like the engineering of the undercarriage legs, it is very precise and solid and the tyre halves are nicely done with a realistic weighted bulge. Maybe of all the undercarriage, the only area that would benefit of some new aftermarket

22

item is the rear wheel. In my opinion it is not up to the kit’s standard. The same cannot be said of typically weak point of many Second World War aircraft kit; the spinner and the propeller. Airfix did a pretty good job here and I do not see room for any aftermarket improvement.

WHICH COLOUR SCHEME?

Of the two camouflages available out of the box, I chose the three-colour scheme of a Ju87B-2 deployed to Libya in 1942. Mr Hobby Aqueous (acrylic) colours are in my opinion a good match for all the four major shades required, the two greens, RLM70 and '71 (H65, H64), the light blue RLM65 (H67) and the light brown RLM79 (H66). Given the hard colour separation typical of the early Luftwaffe camouflage I took advantage of some Tamiya tape of various widths. I sprayed both the two greens in very thin layers, progressively lightening and so highlighting the entire camouflage. When this first stage of the painting process was set and done, I masked again the upper surfaces to get them ready to receive the brown camouflage. Finally, I painted the undersurfaces. Afterwards, I sprayed the entire model with a few of

As with the engine, the spatted undercarriage can be fitted once painted

Very sensibly, Airfix have moulded the distinctive control surfaces of the Stuka individually

The big canopy of the Stuka is very well tackled by Airfix and the result looks extremely authentic

very thin layers of a mix of matt and gloss clear Mr Hobby colour (85% H20 + 15% H30). The Airfix decals look fine and adhere well to the Mr Hobby colours. Weathering with some oil paint and pastels came next. The detail painting of the engine exhausts was done first with some Matt Black

(Mr Hobby H12), and then with some Rust (Humbrol 113). Masking the canopy would be quite a tedious job, but Eduard came to the rescue again with some very fine pre-cut masks. At the end, the fit of the canopy and all the other minor parts like the flaps was very good indeed.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I enjoyed building this kit. The new Stuka from Airfix is a superb kit, although you need to take care when cementing the parts together, given the very fine detail of the interior and exterior mouldings. I loved the way Airfix dealt with the flaps; historically, the wing

flaps are the weakest point of many Stukas in this scale but Airfix did a good job. Upgrades are possible and available, but this kit can be built in a very eye-catching replica just out of the box. I am already looking forward to other variants of this kit in the future! ●

FORZA FERRARI

PT.2

In a change of plan from last issue’s ‘Part One’, Eric Evain completes Tamiya’s new 1:20 Ferrari SF70H, with plenty of added carbon-fibre effect decal

T

he 2017 F1 season was marked by a major change in the technical regulations, which is notably characterized by a significant increase in the width of the tyres, the body and the fins. The result was to give a more aggressive look to the cars with a front wing way ahead of the nose cone and a rear spoiler inclined. The result is quite convincing even if we regret that the low and flat noses were maintained. In addition, the aerodynamic criteria – so essential nowadays – means that the era of beautiful F1 cars seems long gone. And I'm not even mentioning of the introduction of HALO in 2018! Note also that F1 cars of 2017 became very long and very heavy. A car

The back edge of the cowling was primed in grey. If white primer was applied directly to the red plastic, a slight pink tint could persist in the white areas

of 1989 was 3.5m long and 500kg; in 2017 they are on average about 5m long and weight 728kg. Ferrari seems to have invested heavily in 2016 to catch up with Mercedes. This translates into a rather extreme single-seater with new air intakes and it seems efficient. During the first half of the season, Sebastian Vettel was tied with Lewis Hamilton as they took four wins each. But the second half would be a real ordeal for Scuderia Ferrari, including the Asian campaign and in the end Lewis Hamilton would once again become World Champion with nice wins and 363 points against five wins and 317 points for Vettel.

U

Some accessories used in the completion of the SF70H: Tamiya and Belkits carbon decal sheets, Model Factory Hiro harness set and Hasegawa Gold and matt black foil stickers

White primer was then applied to the grey primer, then the back edge was painted TS-26 White

The white part was then sealed off thanks to masks provided in the box. The masks are not pre-cut, they must be trimmed out with a good pair of scissors

Once the engine cover had been painted TS-49 Red, the masks were removed and decals 56 and 60 applied. A white decal on a white background: the contrast with red is perfect

SEE THAT COMING! V DIDN'T The release of this kit

of the SF70H was a real surprise. Announced at the Nuremberg Toy Fair in late January, it has been on sale since March. This is the first F1 without engine produced by Tamiya since 1967. This is probably due to an access denied to the engine by the Scuderia, but also because with a car with complex shapes, it is almost impossible to achieve a 'motorised' model with a cowling that closes properly. We can hope that some craftsmen, such as Top Studio for example, we will release a resin engine to complete the model. In any case, the realization of an F1 with so tormented aero forms must have caused many migraines for Tamiya's designers.

The modern F1s are entirely made of carbon, so the author decided to cover all the unpainted areas of carbon with decal. The paint masks provided by Tamiya were used to mark the boundaries

Tamiya carbon-fibre effect decal was used on the chassis and the undertray. Thanks to the patterns previously drawn, the application of the decals was more precise

U

The carbon decals placed on the various parts (chassis or undertray) form a harmonious and continuous curve

The finishing of the bodywork ended with the application of the decals. The body parts were then varnished with PPG D800 polyurethane clear

The Shell logo required some incisions to fit to the cowling's curves. Note how the red of the Scuderia Ferrari decal perfectly matches the TS-49 Red

30

Once the chassis had been varnished, the air intakes were completed by the various flaps assembled separately. This view distinguishes the sophisticated design of this dual air intake, faithfully reproduced by Tamiya

Tamiya even includes a carbon-fibre decal for the inside of the air intakes

V BRIEFING

Micrometric precision assemblies are a credit to Tamiya's reputation, even though I found the wheel hub assemblies a bit fragile. Tamiya's TS-49 spray or its Lacquer Paint LP-50 airbrushable version are spot-on for this car and are a perfect match for the red decals provided by Tamiya. A modern F1 is full of carbon elements and Tamiya made a good decision in providing a generous quantity of decalling for the majority of visible parts, including the undertray. I coated the other parts either with Tamiya carbon-fibre decals (Twill Weave Fine) whose pattern is identical to that of the flat areas provided in the box, or with Belkits decals (also twill weave) but with more silver highlights. The use of the hairdryer for the application of the carbon decal is more than recommended to shape the decals around the more complex kit parts. In the end, the effect is spectacular.

To make the cutting patterns for the solid areas of carbon, Tamiya masking tape was applied to the part to be covered and the edges marked with a pencil

Once cut, the pattern was applied to the decal sheet to serve as a guide. The pieces on the right and left sides are symmetrical, so the pattern was applied to the front and back of the decal sheet to make both sides

All parts to be carbon coated were painted in Humbrol enamel Gloss Black

U

Before applying the carbon decal, the author applied a little Tamiya X-20A thinners as softener. As much as possible, apply this under the carbon pattern, not above, as it may be slightly altered by the solvent

The decal was then simply applied and the solvent allowed to take effect for about a minute

Then the decal is shaped by blowing with a hair dryer. Under the effect of heat, the decal is immediately melted on the piece without any manipulation. This solution is very practical for ailerons, camera fairings or suspension triangles. To try it is to adopt it

Nuts with 3mm screws (not supplied in the box) were glued to the engraved locations on the undertray to fix the finished model Tamiya showcase (size P)

Tamiya provides carbon decals to fully cover the top of the undertray. The decals alternate with different carbon weaves, creating a very realistic effect. Parts D38 and D39 were previously painted in TS-49 Red and glued on the undertray before laying the carbon

32

The front wing is a small masterpiece of moulding. The flat part (piece A20) was painted red and the 'louvres' C21 and C22 are white. Carbon-fibre decal was then affixed to the sides. The red flaps were not painted because they would be dressed in the provided decals

The white mini-deflectors were then fitted. Their rear faces were coated with carbon-fibre decal provided on the Tamiya sheet. Note the thin, full-width carbon band at the front of the wing

Although it is almost invisible on the completed model, the gearbox was also 'carbonised'. Thermal protection films were added with either Hasegawa Gold Foil or Bare Foil Aluminium Foil

Exhaust outlets leading to the rear of the engine hood are all reproduced. The 'monkey seat', a small fin at the end of the gearbox was not coated carbon

The driver's seat is also made of carbon. The foam coverings of the real seat, along the back and the shoulders of the pilot, were reproduced with Hasegawa matt black adhesive sheet

The harness was made from a Model Factory Hiro set. The 'Santander' logos were taken from the Tamiya decals to be glued, still on their paper supports, onto the straps

Two options are possible to finish off the steering wheel: either paint the different controls, or apply Tamiya decals. I chose the second option; more realistic but more difficult

The bottom of the undertray was also coated with carbon-fibre decal using a Tamiya accessory sheet. The wooden 'plank' was simply painted

The flaps of the diffuser were dressed with 'checkerboard' decals provided by Tamiya

V On the other hand, the

tyre markings lack opacity; pre-painted tyres would have been preferable. The driver's harness in decal form lacks realism; it would have been better to have provided a three-dimensional harness set like the F60. I replaced them with Model Factory Hiro harnesses. But these are just peccadillos that the most demanding modellers can easily fix. This SF70H is pure happiness for all F1 fans. Let's hope we see another Tamiya 1:20 F1 car kit soon! â—?

The chassis/cowling assembly was simply attached to the undertray with micro-screws. The mini screwdriver is also provided in the box

The SF70H takes shape and everything fits perfectly

The author used Belkits' carbon-fibre decal for the suspension elements and fins because their silver-grey pattern gives more relief to the pieces. All the parts coated with carbon decals were protected by the same varnish as the bodywork

The side baffles are beautifully reproduced by Tamiya with a precision assembly. Here too, carbon reigns supreme

The use of the hairdryer to apply the carbon-fibre decal on the flanks of the rear wing is essential, allowing the decal to 'melt' into the slots. Under the effect of the heat, the decal splits without intervention and forms perfectly to on the indentations. It's almost magical!

For laying the decals on tyres, the method is simple. The protective film must first be removed from the transfer. The transfer was then removed from its cardboard backing. You just have to left a corner with a knife tip to separate the two. The transfer is slightly sticky. Once well centred on the tyre (already mounted on its rim), it was rubbed with a fingernail to adhere to the sidewall. Then, lukewarm water was dabbed over the support paper to separate it from the transfer. The paper was removed lifted off, without effort, and the transfer is gently wiped

The finished wheels. They are beautiful, but we must recognise that pre-painted tyres like those provided by Ebbro, have a better result

INTRUDER WINDOW! Rene van der Hart returns with his impeccable build of the Hobbyboss 1:48 Grumman A-6E Intruder

I

n 1958 Grumman was awarded a contract to build a new carrier-based attack plane. After the success of the A-1 Skyraider the US Navy was in need of an all-weather, jet powered replacement of the ageing piston-powered workhorse. The prototype of the Intruder, then still called YA2F-1, first flew in 1960. After several changes, modifications and improvements to the prototype, the A-6A Intruder entered service in 1963. The Intruder saw extensive action during the Vietnam War with both the US Navy and US Marine Corps. Its most important assets were long rage, heavy payload and all-weather capability during day and night sorties. Over the years several model brands have released 1:48 kits of the Intruder such as Fujimi, Monogram and Kinetic. In 2013 Hobbyboss released a brand new kit of the A-6A. And what a kit it is. Upon opening the large box, the content just oozes quality. All sprues are packaged in separate plastic bags with the more fragile parts stored in a cardboard compartment within the box. The surface details like panel lines and rivets seem to be in scale and the detailing of the cockpit, landing gear, wing flaps and wing fold are above average. In my opinion, almost no aftermarket parts are needed for this kit. I choose only to replace the ejection seats with a pair of resin seats from Wolfpack.

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY AVIATION HOBBYBOSS 1:48 A-6E INTRUDER ● KIT NO.81709

THE OFFICE V INTO As with most kits, the build

starts with the cockpit. The detail on the instrument panels, side panels and the area behind the pilots' seats are simply beautiful and very sharp, making it quite easy to touch them up with a small brush. A few pieces of brass rod and copper wire were added behind the seats, according to photos of the real aircraft. All parts were painted with black primer from Alclad 2 and painted grey according the instructions. A neutral grey wash from AK Interactive and a very light drybrush session helped all the details stand out. Since the cockpit is the only part to be installed inside the fuselage, the next step was to build up the actual airframe; cementing together the fuselage halves, inner parts of the wings and engine nacelles. The overall fit of the parts is excellent and only a bit of filler was needed is places. The long seam on the back of the plane needs a bit of attention. After sanding you might lose some of the fine rivet detail. Repairing the rivets proved a bit hard to do because l didn’t have a rivet tool with the correct spacing. I ended up filling the rivets still visible and replaced them all by making new ones with a rivet wheel.

NOSE: OPEN OR CLOSED?

The final large part to fit is the nose-cone. It is possible the pose the cone in the open, upward hinged position, showing the nicely detailed radar provided in the kit, but I decided to cement it in the closed position. The fit of this part is not bad but in several places a small gap remained between the cone and fuselage. I filled the whole separation line with Tamiya putty and rescribed the line after the putty had fully dried. The Intruder is a fairly large aircraft and this was the main reason for me to pose the wings in the folded position. This meant that the wings had to be painted and assembled separately. All the flaps and slats are also provided as separate parts in the kit and if the wings are fixed in the normal position, they can be posed in the lowered position if desired. At this stage the beautifully clear windscreen and canopy were masked for painting as well. The windscreen was glued in place with white glue and the cockpit was completely masked off.

U

The standard cockpit is excellent but the seats were replaced with resin items from Wolfpack for an even better appearance

Lengths of copper wire were added to the cockpit rear area to enhance the visual complexity here

The Intruder’s vast instrument panel is well treated by Hobbyboss, with raised and recessed detail in abundance

Ejector-pulls were added to the resin seats using copper wire, bent to shape

The seats were base-coated in matt black before detail painting took place

Individual dials were cut from a Mike Grant decal sheet using a punch and die set

Each dial face could then be applied to its location on the painted instrument panel. The effect is far crisper than hand-painting each display The painted and decalled cockpit tub awaits its seats. Most of this will be visible through the huge canopy

With carefully hand-painting, the Wolfpack resin seats look superb

The big ejector seats are a simple drop-fit, secured with small drops of CA glue

The cockpit module and forward coaming are being test-fitted in the fuselage here

IT BLACK! V PAINT After sanding all parts smooth

and checking if the panel lines and rivets were clear, a coat of black primer was applied. The advantage of a black primer is that you can build up a variation of shades with just one colour by randomly airbrushing the paint in thicker or thinner layers. The second advantage is that white paint covers very nicely over a black primer. For this build I decided to use Hataka Red Line acrylic paints for the grey and white colours, which they work very well. I used Hataka thinner to thin the paint; it went on the model very smoothly and the drying time was very short. All other colours like radome colour and red for the flaps are from the Mr Hobby Aqueous range. After the grey and white base colours were dry, a few thin coats of Alclad 2 Aquagloss were applied. This protects the paint for the next stage: masking the nose, leading edges of the wings, speed brake and the red panels on the flaps and slats. In order to get a nice result with the red, be sure to apply a layer of white paint first. After the paint dried, another coat of Aquagloss was applied. The next job was to apply a grey colour-wash all over the model, which I did before applying on the decals. The stencils were mostly translucent, so the panel lines and rivets would be visible though the decal film anyway. The larger decals would receive a round of colour-washes afterwards.

Brake lines were fitted to the undercarriage using varying gauges of fine wire

Once painted, the up-detail undercarriage legs look far better with plumbing added than if left plain

The Intruder’s chubby fuselage takes shape. Note the apertures for the airbrakes

The first ‘colour’ to go on was a layer of matt black, over which the US Marines greys will have more depth

The basic greys – and radome tan – have been applied; the weathering will bring out the detail

With the colourful decals in place, the initially anaemic airframe is starting to look like an Intruder

DECAL TIME

The large kit decals proved to be quite brittle and I decided to use an aftermarket decal set from Impact Decals. Again a coat of Aquagloss was airbrushed all over the model after the decals had dried for twenty-four hours. Now that all 'colours' were on the model, I could decide if more weathering was needed. In several places, grey colour-wash was again brushed on and wiped off when dry. This added more subtle variations in the grey

paint. Some light brown and black pastel powder was applied in places to simulate dust and dirt. I kept the weathering subtle because the colours on this model are very light and it would have been easy to over-exaggerate the dirtying-down. The main and nose landing gears are very detailed but still I added a few plastic strips and some copper wire to simulate the brake lines. The main landing gear is split in two parts and have white metal inserts which help

U

The wingfold hinge is buzzing with detail and is a weathering magnet

The folded wing option comes as standard in the Hobbyboss kit, as do the bracing struts that secure the outer wing sections

Almost done, with just the airbrakes needing to be fitted. Hobbyboss should be proud of this kit, it’s an excellent replica

V to bear the weight of the

model. The gear legs and wheels were painted with black primer, followed by a coat of Mr Hobby White. A grey colour-wash gave some depth to the details on these parts. Installing the landing gear into their slots in the wheel wells provided an instant and solid connection. A few drops of super glue were enough to secure them in place.

TECHSPEC... FINAL STAGES

The separate outer wings fit snugly into the hinges on the inner wing parts. Two wing supports, painted red, would keep the wings firmly in the folded position. A few extra details on the wing hinges were painted glued in place too at this time. As is usual with Hobbyboss kits, a vast choice of underwing stores and weapons is provided

in the kit. On this plane I choose a centre-line tank, two wing-tanks on the inner pylons and multiple ejector racks with six Mk.82 bombs on both outer pylons. A dozen or so remove before flight tags from the spares box complete this build. I really enjoyed building this kit. The level of detailing, fit of the parts and the choice of optional parts is truly amazing. ●

FANTASY PRINTSHOP, UK

www.fantasyprintshop.co.uk Sometimes during a modelling project, one needs to apply an even stripe of colour and when masking/painting is not practical, only a decal will do. Spare decals can be sliced up of course, but a far better solution is a purpose-made strip and this is where Fantasy Printshop step in. They now offer waterslide strips from 0.25mm (the width of a pen stroke) to 12mm in a selection of colours that includes black, white, light and dark red, yellow, orange, navy and royal blue, silver, gold, four shades of grey plus fluorescent green, orange and red. HAULER, CZECH REPUBLIC

www.hauler.cz A host of neat new items have arrived from Hauler, including a diorama set to create a park wall/fence that comprises masonry pillars, low walls and photo-etched brass railings. Instead of plaster castings for the stonework, Hauler have used resin, which is arguably easier to prepare and paint than porous ceramic. The stonework incorporates realistic dings and cracks and can be assembled as a corner – as per the boxart – or in a straight line. Superb detail and an almost instant diorama. Also new is an extremely handy PE set for Tamiya's M1A2 Abrams that addresses the issue of the missing turret bin mesh, cupola 'segments' and other useful small detail parts. If you're building a 1:35 diorama that requires a changing-room steel locker, Hauler have just the thing in brass, complete with louvres to ventilate those smelly 1:35 socks... 1:35 PARK FENCE ELEMENTS (HLU35106) STEEL LOCKER (HLU35105) 1:48 M1A2 ABRAMS DETAIL SET (HLX48385) FOR TAMIYA 1:72 SPPZ2 LUCHS (HLH72075) FOR REVELL STERN ANTENNAE (HLH72073) GRILLES FOR PZ.III FAMILY (HLH72074) FOR ATTACK

LAFERRARI YELLOW EDITION www.hobbyco.net SCALE: 1:24 MATERIALS: IM, SVT, PCM, NM, PE, WS ITEM NO.24347 Tamiya’s 1:24 kit of the LaFerrari was originally released back in 2013 to much acclaim; it’s a stunning model that is packed with detail inside and out. Now, we have the ‘yellow edition’ which features body parts moulded in the very bold ‘Giallo Fly’ yellow. It’s a stunning colour but maybe more at home on the Cote D’Azur than the North Circular. The kit still looks fresh as a daisy, with phenomenal detail on the engine parts, brakes and interior. It’s no quick build but if you’re a scale model Tifosi, it will give you weeks of modelling pleasure.

A wonderful kit that’s pure Tamiya brilliance from top to bottom A patient, methodical approach will be needed for a successful result; there’s a lot of parts!

V-2 ROCKET HANOMAG SS100 MEILLERWAGEN www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE 1:72 MATERIALS; IM, PE, SVT, WS ITEM NO.5001 The V-2 missile is a fascinating German WW2 weapons-system that has appeared in various forms in miniature over the years. Takom released the missile, its transport/launcher and prime-mover in 1:35 a while back and now the same setup has been produced in 1:72. For many modellers, this is the ideal size for the rig, mainly for practical reasons. An inspection of the kit’s sprues reveal very few detail compromises in the parts, the erector/launcher being particularly delicate in execution. The wheels feature individual rims and the forward bogie is detailed right down to the leaf springs.

An evergreen modelling subject with heaps of detail, like its 1:35 brother A couple of crew figures would have been the icing on the cake

Mirror Models have kitted the F15A water truck here, a variant that was used in North Africa, northwest Europe, Italy, Sicily, Soviet Union, Burma and post-war too. The model is very highly detailed with an engine, chassis, suspension and drivetrain all depicted in full. The first kit (early version) was issued last year to much positivity from the armour modelling community and since then we have been offered the Late and now the Mid-production vehicles. The kit is moulded in grey polystyrene and comes equipped with linkand-length tracks formed from the same malleable material. Close attention must be paid to the instructions when fitting the tracks because the right links must be in the right places and this is made tricky by the very small size of the illustrations. Aside from this, it’s a superb kit of this towering beast of a tank

A fantastically well detailed kit of a very significant WW2 Allied truck design

An impressive new kit of a US workhorse with stacks of fine detail

IJN CARRIER FIGHTER MITSUBISHI A5M2B CLAUDE LATE www.finemolds.jp SCALE 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, PC, WS ITEM NO.49921 The A5M2B Claude is an attractive 1930s-designed fighter from Mitsubishi that featured an open cockpit and spatted main undercarriage wheels, quite different to the sleeker designs from later in the war with enclosed canopies and retractable undercarriages. Fine Molds’ 1:48 kit of this machine is an exquisite little production that comes with a finely detailed cockpit that extends forward to the machine gun ammunition guides and rearwards to the aft bulkhead and oxygen bottles. These areas alone will take some assembly, painting and weathering. The beautifully detailed radial engine features separately moulded pushrod discs and exhaust collectorrings which all create an air of complexity in the this area. Three markings-options are provided, all for overall natural metal machines with red-painted tails and black cowlings, a classic look and open to plenty of weathering.

WINGNUT WINGS, NEW ZEALAND

JUNKERS D.1 www.wingnutwings.com SCALE: 1:32 MATERIALS: IM, PE, WS ITEM NO.32065 The newest release from New Zealand’s fabulous Wingnut Wings is the chubby little Junkers D.1, a late-war fighter, single-seat machine of a revolutionary all-metal monoplane design. As WW1 aircraft kit subjects go it has one huge advantage over others; it has almost no rigging! This will endear itself to many because rigging-up can be one of the most challenging aspects, but it also a fascinating design too with a corrugated airframe skin. WnW’s kit is another of their magnificent productions with stunning detail inside and out, complimented by very original instructions. We will be bringing you a full-build on this one soon, so keep reading!

Fantastic subject choice, gorgeous detail, brilliant execution It would just be nit-picking

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY VEHICLE TAMIYA 1:35 ‘BRITISH AMBULANCE ROVER 7 ● KIT NO.35082

BUILD V THE The main build went fast

and the fit of parts was very nice for a thirty-year old kit. I completed the driving compartment first (painting, weathering and adding the driver) then I left the back compartment empty. The first surprise came with the roof; I had planned to remove all detail such the vents and rolled tarps, but in this 1970s model, these items are moulded integrally. I removed them but the result was four big holes on the top. This was fixed with a thin piece of plastic-card, glued in place with cyano then sanded. I found a logical position for the turret, made a hole to the size of the turret ring then fixed the roof top to the rest of the kit.

The author added smoke dischargers, roof vent and police siren (taken from an AFV Club Centurion) to the roof edge, handrails antenna mount, back bumper from an M113 Zelda plus a police light and wheels from an Italeri HUMMVEE

EXTERIOR DETAILS

I replaced the rear windows with a pieces of plastic-card to simulate armour plate, with pistol ports taken from the BRDM-1 etched set and I added texture to these parts plus the roof using Tamiya cement. I added smoke dischargers, roof vent and police siren (from the AFV Club Centurion) to the roof's edge, handrails antenna mount, back bumper (Zelda), the police light and wheels (Italeri HUMMVEE), wire cutter and its protection (Hobbyboss M706), the window grilles protection (Eduard T55) and the double .30cal MG turret (M113).

Tamiya’s 1:35 ‘Archer’ 17pdr self-propelled anti-tank gun is a highly detailed kit inside and out, and Eduard have added to it with a pair of tailor-made detail sets that provide small sheet-metal fittings, internal items such as stowage brackets, instrument panel and more (36375). A separate set (36376) provides dust guards completes the package.

PAINTING

I started with an acrylic flat black primer over the whole model to provide a level playing field for the differing materials and also to check the fit and the joints. For the main colour I used Tamiya XF-25 Light Sea Grey applied in multiple, thin layers and I then painted some details (smoke discharger, mirror, antenna mount, wire cutter) with Humbrol H67. The chassis and tyre rims were finished with Tamiya X-18 Semi-Gloss Black and finally I covered the entire model with Tamiya X-22 clear to protect the paint for the weathering. The decals (C23) are from Tamiya's M-48 tank and licence plate numbers come from the spare parts box. I applied these between two layers of clear.

WEATHERING

I started the dirtying-down process with some paint scratches and scoring, applied in logical locations using the sponge technique with my homemade mix of Humbrol Black and Brown. This was followed by a layer of clear, then a colour-wash of AK Interactive product (Panel Line Wash Deep Grey), flowed into every nook, cranny and detail. After one day of drying I added some streaking and rain marks all over with more AK Interactive products (Rain-Marks and Streaking Grime). After another day of drying I undertook some paint de-colouration, placing small dots of oil paint all over the model, blended and spread with a flat brush moistened with lighter fuel (take great care when doing this and thoroughly ventilate your workspace). Finally, I used some weathering pigment (Vallejo Light Sienna) to simulate dust and dirt under the model, lower bumper and wheels. The pigment was distributed with brush and fixed with water and fixed with a layer of flat clear to give a very dull and dirty look to the model.

Tamiya Acrylics, oil paints and ready-made weathering products were employed to give the Land Rover a well-used look

THE FIGURES

The driver was built and painted without any modification, but for the man in the turret I used the officer from the Tamiya ambulance kit, adding arms found in my spare box and a head – with gas mask – from an old Dragon British SAS figure set. I painted both with Humbrol Enamels, followed by a clear coat. They were given an umber oil paint colour-wash, matted down with another coat of flat clear. The edges of details were highlighted with white pastels.

BASE V THE I used a 23cm x 18cm picture frame

for the base, gluing on a piece of 5mm cardboard for the groundwork. I started by painting the centre of the road with Tamiya XF-69 NATO Black followed by a bands of Tamiya XF-3 Flat Yellow. I then masked off the centre of the road with Tamiya tape to simulate the road lines, and once dry, I sprayed some stripes with an airbrush along the road way with Tamiya colours (XF-85 Rubber Black, XF-53 Neutral Grey) to simulate dust and wear. A thin, airbrushed coat of Tamiya XF-63 German Grey was employed to further harmonise the colours. The Jersey barriers were made with plaster castings from Meng Model, painted with acrylics and weathered with

oil paints. The Armco barriers along the road are from Meng too, again painted with acrylics and weathered with AK Interactive products. The big 'caution' and traffic signs were made using PC software, printed and glued on a thin plastic-card panels. The frame of the board was made from scratch using plastic-card channel and I added bullet holes on the warning board with a heated pins. Both sings were weathered with oil paints and further AK Interactive products. Finally, the dirt patches either side of the road were made with a mixture of natural sand, rocks and rubble, fixed with carpenter's glue, painted with acrylics and weathered with oil paints. And there we have it, Tamiya's classic 1:35 Ambulance Rover 7 in a new, post-apocalyptic setting. ●

Book Reviews GOT A NEW BOOK? IF YOU ARE A PUBLISHER WITH A NEW MODELLING RELATED TITLE TO PUBLICISE, WHY NOT SEND IN A COPY FOR REVIEW HERE?

THE 101ST AIRBORNE IN NORMANDY JUNE 1944

YVES BUFFETAUT, CASEMATE ILLUSTRATED ISBN 978-1-61200-523-2 www.casematepublishing.co.uk This compact-format, 128+ page softback makes a very useful and informative guide to the actions of the famous US 101st Airborne, aka the ‘Screamin’ Eagles’ in June 1944 during the Allied landings. Their incredible, heroic efforts are well documented here, with a strongly pictorial approach taken by the author to show the Division in clarity. Biographical panels on US and German Generals make interesting reading and form a balanced counterpoint to the high quality images, many from the wonderful archives taken during the campaign. Well drawn colour illustrations highlight some key items of inventory; Jeep, Waco glider, 75mm Pack howitzer, M10 TD plus French tanks and trucks in German service. A very useful companion volume with some interesting, high grade photographs of the unit.

PANZERWRECKS 22, DESERT

Lee Archer, Panzerwrecks www.panzerwrecks.com Volume twenty-two of Panzerwrecks has arrived and this time the subject of choice is the north African desert campaign, earlier in the Second World War. And as you’d expect from this theatre, there are Panzer IIIs a-plenty depicted, all in varying states of disrepair. These alone plant the seeds of model projects in one’s mind, but there are many more AFVs within the title that will get the modelling juices flowing; how about an M3 ‘Honey’ tank, repainted and marked for German service, but burnt out, covered in soot and peppered with bullet holes? Or a an US M3 halftrack, overpainted with German sand and a patchy camouflage over-spray plus large Balkenkreuze, but also wrecked and abandoned? Fantastic inspiration for vignettes and dioramas. The book finishes with an extensive series of photos depicting the Panzerjäger 38 7.62cm PaK(r) that provide ideal references for people building the Tamiya 1:35 or 1:48 kits.

Airbrush Thinner Our Ultimate Airbrush Thinner is specifically formulated to work with ALL brands of acrylic modellers paint. Our blended formula of six ingredients ensures a fast drying, smooth finish every time, no matter what brand of modelling acrylic paint you use.

Airbrush Cleaner Our fast & effective Ultimate Airbrush Cleaner is specifically formulated to work with ALL brands of acrylic modellers paint and all types of airbrush. Our cleaner is not overly aggressive and will not ruin the seals in your airbrush. We have also added a blue dye to the cleaner to be able to distinguish it from our thinner. Photo-Etch Placer Our photo-etch placer is a re-usable wax based positioning stick that will help you to hold and place even the smallest piece of photo-etch or styrene. A real helping hand when dealing with the more fiddly side of modelling.

Primer Our Ultimate Primer is a water based acrylic polyurethane self levelling surface primer. Offering a simple and easy application with excellent adhesion and durability, it dries to a hard flat finish and is simple and easy to clean up. It’s also fine to sand. There are seven colours to choose from: Grey, black, white, gloss black, olive, oxide and gelb. Ultimate Primer can be applied with a brush, airbrush and sponge for use on styrene, plastics, resin, metals, woods and various other substrates.

Weathering Wash Ultimate Weathering Wash has been formulated with several key non-toxic ingredients to bring you a superior clay based wash to add detail and realism to your model. The nine vibrant colours in our range cover the most widely used in modelling. Be aware, the wash will dry slightly lighter than the colour of the bottle and a good shake and stir is recommended before use.

Modellers Sanders Our range of specially produced Ultimate Modellers Sanders provide an excellent abrasive solution for the discerning modeller. Uniquely shaped they are provided in several grits (100/180/220/240/400/800/1200) and a buffer (3,000/12,000 grit). They are long lasting and washable, which will allow them to be used to their maximum potential with the minimum of waste. Thinny Sticks Our range of Thinny Stick Sanders have been developed specifically to help modellers get to those hard to sand areas on all genres of models. They come in six grits (180/240/400/800/1200) and a buffer (3,000/12,000 grit) and are uniquely shaped to accommodate all your fine sanding scenarios. They are made from the same high quality materials as our Modellers Sanders and are available in packs of six. Thinny Sponges Our Thinny Sponges are designed to compliment our Thinny Stick range. They come in one grit 220, but being a softer sponge it’s equivalent to nearly a 300 grit like the full size Ultimate Modellers Sanders. This will prove to be the go to sander on your bench.

NEW in the ‘HOW TO BUILD...’ series NEW How to Build... TAMIYA 1:32 F4U-1A and F4U-1D CORSAIR When Tamiya released their 1:32 scale Spitfire Mk.IXc in 2009, they set a new standard for plastic model kits. Each model since then has seen incremental improvements. Just when you think the series can’t get any better, Tamiya goes and proves you wrong. Their 1:32 scale Birdcage Corsair was released in mid-2013. This was an outstanding kit in every respect. Tamiya expanded their 1:32 scale Corsair family with an F4U-1A in late 2014. This kit included several new sprues and offered a wider range of camouflage and marking possibilities. Tamiya has now completed the -1 trio with their new 1:32 scale F4U-1D Corsair. Once again, this kit includes a significant number of brand new sprues to depict the unique attributes of this variant. We can also marvel at the kit’s subtle surface textures, high level of detail, clever parts breakdown and accuracy. In this new book, we provide an exhaustive step-by-step illustrated guide to building and detailing the 1:32 scale F4U-1D and F4U-1A, offering plenty of inspiration with two different configurations and colour schemes. We have also a bonus Chapter on building Tamiya’s 1:48 scale Corsair family, offer some tips for painting pilot figures and include a helpful walk around of a Corsair under restoration.

Is DDV192 Ibuki real, or imaginary?

KUBO IBUKI in 1:700!

I

must say I was a little puzzled when news arrived of Tamiya’s latest ship kit. At first glance I thought the subject matter was a hyper-modern Japan Marine Self Defence Force vessel – not a something I have much knowledge of – but interesting all the same and something new to research. Which is just what I did, and discovered that actually, the Aircraft Carrier DDV192 ‘Ibuki’ is a fictional vessel that starred in a Japanese language story by Kawaguchi Kaiji and Eya Osamu, serialised from December 2014 in the Shogakukan publication ‘Big Comic’. Who knew? The Ibuki, commanded by former ace pilot Akitsu Ryota, is

the largest ship of the fleet and the flagship of Escort Flotilla 5. She is an imaginary adaptation of an actual design – that of the DDH22 Izumo class helicopter destroyer – and borrows her name from an uncompleted WWII IJN ship. The model has been created by Tamiya commemorate fifty years of Big Comic. Events in the story occur in the year ‘20XX’, against a backdrop of increasing territorial tensions around the Japanese archipelago, which threaten to escalate into full-blown conflict with

an attack from a foreign power in April ‘20XY’. Worryingly topical. Real or not, the 1:700 waterline kit is 354mm long 72mm wide; it’s beautifully detailed, featuring a hull rendered with panel detail, a flight deck with surface patterns and a

‘ski-jump’ aircraft ramp. An airwing comprising ten VTOL fixed-wing jets (F-35), eight Sea Hawk helicopters and numerous on-deck tractors is also to be found in the box. So there we have it, a fantasy vessel in 1:700 from Tamiya! ●

ZERO PAINTS DIAMOND FINISH TWO-PART CLEAR COAT www.hiroboy.com Although some serious technical issues (the loss of my in-progress images from a dead computer hard-drive) meant that I had use Eric Evain’s (superb) 1:20 Ferrari SF70H instead of mine this issue, I did at least get to try out Zero Paints’ Diamond Finish two-part gloss varnish system. It was my first time using such a material and I was a little nervous, but I needn’t had worried, because the stuff is incredible. I mixed the main clear-coat ingredient with hardener in the correct ratio and thinned to airbrush consistency with the correct solvent (included in the pack) and sprayed it using very thorough ventilation of the work area. It didn’t want to ‘sag’ (excess liquid pooling in corners) and it was bubble-free. After a week of curing it was rock-hard and safe to mask over and no polishing was needed at all. An impressive product that, when treated carefully and the safety instructions fully read through, will form a wet-look gloss finish on a model like nothing else.
