An in-box look at Tamiya's new 1:24 Porsche 934 Turbo RSR Vaillant

amiya launched the newly-tooled 1:24 Porsche 934 Turbo RSR 'Jägermeister' last year to much acclaim and enthusiasm; it was great to see a newly-tooled 1:24 kit of this amazing machine. Already we have a second edition of the model, using the same moulded parts, depicting the 1976 Group 4 GT car of the Vaillant team. The main sponsor (a German boiler/heating system manufacturer) used a very eye-catching livery on its competition cars, with a turquoise

background and purple, red and orange stripes which contrasted beautifully with the blue-green overall shade. In Tamiya's new kit, the bodyshell and chassis plate (plus some other smaller parts) are moulded in a good replica of this colour, and while most modellers will wish to paint their Porsche kit, for those who prefer to leave the bodyshell in its bare plastic (youngsters and beginners) the colour makes a useful starting point. The kit is what could be described as 'curbside' which means no full engine, just the

lower portions. The doors, bonnet and boot are moulded shut which preserves the scale-like lines of the body and greatly eases assembly. This rationalisation doesn't mean the kit is simplified in detail; the chassis is very well rendered with rear swing arms, anti-roll bar, shock absorbers, steerable front wheels and nicely moulded disc brakes and callipers. The engine's lower portion gets a separately moulded turbocharger and exhaust manifold and the turbo intercooler face is enhanced with a

photo-etched grille. The kit's cabin replicates the sparse interior of the real Porsche, with foot pedals, gear lever and handbrake on the floor, plus a multi-part rollcage, standard 911 Turbo dashboard and racing steering wheel. The racing seat comes with decals for its harnesses, something most modellers aren't too fond of, but they do the job and look fine from a distance. The kit comes with photo-etched metal grilles and chromed, self-adhesive mirror faces. The decals are dazzling and the chrome on the wheels, perfect. The new 1:24 Porsche kit is easy to build thanks to its ‘curbside’, engineless presentation.

Just the underside areas of the engine are provided, but the turbocharger is a separate moulding.

The interior is accurately sparse, but the floor of the cabin ‘tub’ is extremely well detailed.

QUOISE TURBO The kit comes with photo-etched grilles for the front of the body too and these will need to be bent to fit the curve of the cutouts in the front spoiler. They will also need painting in the body colour and very careful fixing in place with CA glue, or for safety, PVA glue. The smallest details are sometimes the hardest to get right and creating neat-looking rear view and

wing mirrors can be quite a challenge. Thankfully in this release, we are treated to brightly plated, photo-etched mirror faces that even come with self-adhesive patches for easy attachment to the mirror moulding and they look very cool. One of the hardest parts of any vintage 911 kit is painting the full-width rear light bar that sits above the rear bumper. The kit provides this as a

one-piece clear part, so some very careful and masking/ spraying will be required for a neat appearance. It's great to see the wonderfully colourful Vaillant livery on this fabulous 1970s Porsche Turbo and Tamiya's newly tooled bodyshell and chassis capture the bulbous lines perfectly. To top off the package, we even have a specially mixed Tamiya Spray for the colour... ●

fter building mainly German armour recently, this Allied subject was a very refreshing change. I had seen the Dragon Wagon in Tamiya's top ten models (TMMI Issue 200) and immediately wanted to take on the challenge of building one. I didn't have to wait long though as my other half had bought me one for my birthday! Initially the project started off as a very slow process, simply as I had to do it on my lap in front of the TV. I was renovating the 'man cave' and I just couldn't wait for the room

to be finished before I cracked into the kit. Sooner or later though the model build started flowing nicely and being a relatively new Tamiya kit (I think it's at least fourteen years old! Ed) it was simply a joy to put together. I didn't go down the aftermarket route as I thought what was supplied in the kit was of a very high standard and I couldn't justify the extra cash needed for the conversion set. Saying that though the .50cal machine gun did get an upgrade; I chose the excellent RB Models barrel and photo-etched set for this.

The cabin’s outer shell builds up as a ‘drop-on’ sub-assembly which greatly helps the painting process.

V THE BUILD

I started off by making sub-assemblies as per the instructions, cleaned up the parts and tried to remove the ejector pin marks as best I could. The tooling of the model is fantastic and sub-structures are designed to be moved and placed in realistic ways suitable for dioramas. I chose to have my M26 with a few of the armoured flaps hanging down so that you could see into the cab. I love the look of the truck with the all the hatches open, it almost looks futuristic rather than a vintage military machine getting on for seventy years old! You can get the truck almost built before you have to start slinging paint around and this gives you a chance to think about the paint job. I wanted the appearance of the vehicle to be well used but not abused so to start this look off I sanded the tyres to within an inch of their lives. I put the rubber tyres in the freezer overnight so they would become rock hard and then took my mini-drill to them. This was a lot easier than just sanding them normally and reduced the 'fluffiness' of the tyre.

Lifecolor acrylics were used to form the faded olive-drab tones of the vehicle’s cabin and chassis.

Colour-washes using Humbrol Enamels were applied to the model to highlight surface detail.

Once the decals had been applied to a glossed-up Matt varnish was used to restore the correct finish. paint finish, Humbrol Decal Fix was used to set them. Note the rain-streaked US star in this view.

This little kit of the fascinating ‘Bronekater’ (armoured ship) depicts the The Soviet BK1125 which was used during WW2 from western Europe to Stalingrad, used more like a waterborne tank than a conventional ship. Zvezda’s kit comes with a miniature river-scape and is well detailed.

THE PAINT JOB

I started off getting all the small parts ready for paint such as the fire extinguishers and ammo boxes and put them aside ready to go in the cab. I couldn't wait to get started on the olive drab. This was a technique I hadn't practiced much and I'm always in awe of people who can pull off a convincing shade of what really is just 'green'. I spoke to John Hale, a very experienced modeller who specializes in painting Shermans and he gave me

some invaluable advice and a real boost to get this thing looking right. I've still not mastered the colour modulation technique but I try and use it as best as I can. Lifecolor's 'Olive Drab Contrast and Desaturation Set' came to the rescue here and gave me three fool-proof shades of colour to use. This was all sprayed through the very versatile Iwata Revolution M1 airbrush. After I was happy with the paint job I started to apply filters (colour-washes) using Humbrol enamels and oil

paints. Once these had cured I applied the decals and gave it an acrylic gloss coat ready for the weathering. The tyres were given a coat of black Vallejo Primer and then a coat of 'Rubber' from AK Interactive which gave them a convincing dark grey look. The lights were replaced with AK Interactive lenses which gave a much more realistic appearance. I moved onto the hand tools next and decided to paint them while attached to the vehicle, simply placing a piece of masking tape behind

them so I wouldn't mess up the paint job on the cab. Vallejo 'Old Wood' was used for the handles and Citadel Washes 'Devlan Mud' was used for the wood grain. The hammer heads and shovels were polished with dark steel pigments. I decided to add a few items to the cab to give it a little life, so as well as some tools and a magazine, I also added Captain America's Helmet! I was going to add the shield but thought I had gone far enough as it was!

V Weathering I started off with a series of

localised 'pin' washes using heavily thinned enamel paints and I gave the Allied star decals a little white streaking. At first thought I had gone a little over the top but after many washes and filters it tied it all together. When I thought the look of the washes was right I started to apply pigments. I turned the cab upside down and applied enamel thinners quite heavily. I then tapped loose 'Earth Tone Pigments' off an old brush to give the look of built up mud. The pigments absorbed the thinners at first but after a few layers it started to look convincing. I then moved onto the fifth wheel at the rear. I recently saw Scott Girvan's 'Rat Rod' model and was stunned by the realistic look of his grime and grease that he achieved using pigments. This was an area I hadn't really focused on in the past and was excited to give it a try. I applied enamel thinners as before and repeated the process that I used under the wheel arches of the cab but this time I introduced some Tamiya

X-1 Black (gloss) acrylic paint which soaked into the pigments and gave a lovely greasy look. For the tyres, I made a colour-wash with the same pigment colour (but heavily thinned) and applied it to the tyre tread, immediately wiping away the excess with a piece of kitchen towel. This left the 'mud' effect in the grooves of the tyres and once dried looked great. I went easy on the chipping on the olive drab as this was apparently baked on and wasn't prone to chipping easily, but I did go to town on the white-painted areas. I used a mixture of AK Interactive 'Chipping Fluid'

and Vallejo 'German Camo Black Brown' with the sponge technique to achieve this. The chains were dipped in metal burnishing fluid to obtain a rusty look and the exhaust was painted with Lifecolor's 'Rust' set, again using the sponge technique to great effect. The winches were soaked in heavily thinned shades of dark enamel paint and then rubbed with dark steel pigment. Looking back, this was one of the areas that I would have paid more attention to as the 'wire' (which is really just nylon cord) provided in the kit gets a bit fluffy and ruins the appearance of winching

cable. I also added some graffiti with a very fine chalk pencil. I added my son's initials which has become my little thing I do to each model I make now.

Final thoughts

I thoroughly enjoyed this model and it was nice to step out of my comfort zone to create something different to what I usually build. To finish it off, I mounted it on a base that was custom made (stonedesignonline@ hotmail.com) from thick slate, with 'M26 Recovery Vehicle Engraved' in a 'Gun Play' stencil font which gives the model a subtle looking presentation. l

he bikes in Tamiya's 1:12 range are some of the most comprehensively detailed 'out-of-the-box' kits made by the company and their popularity has endured for several decades. Many of the major makers are covered; Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki and, of course, Ducati. This Italian marque is sometimes labelled the 'Ferrari of motorcycles' and for good reason. They are finely engineered, offer explosive performance and are highly desirable, all the attributes of the famous car maker, and they seem almost as rare. The latest in Ducati's performance line-up is the 1199 Panigale S, a machine with a 1198cc engine and a top speed of 186mph. Tamiya's kit of this exotic beast is a characteristically flawless production from the gorgeous replica of the Superquadro, desmodromic-valved 'L' engine moulded in the familiar metallic grey plastic that Tamiya uses for these parts, to the minimal frame castings, provided in black plastic here. The barely-there wheels are exquisitely moulded in black and the massive tyres carry 'lightning bolt' tread patterns that only just qualify the racing-type rubber for road use. As with pretty much any bike kit, almost every part will need to be painted before assembly and this will call for impeccable clean-up and masking by the modeller; 'work clean' is a good methodology here. The instructions are as close to perfect as you'll see in any kit and they guide you confidently through the model's build-up. It's worth studying the illustrations before cutting plastic and it's also essential that the sequence is followed to the letter as the various sub-assemblies must be fitted in the

correct order. As with all of Tamiya's 1:12 bike kits, the larger sub-assemblies are held together with small screws – some truly tiny – and a suitably diminutive screwdriver is provided. You can tell how many 1:12 bikes a modeller has built by how many of these little orange-handled tools they have in their toolbox; they are way too nice to throw away after the model is finished. The real Panigale can be bought in either Ducati red (solid) or satin/matt black. Sensibly, the kit's body parts are moulded in plain white which eliminates any chance of the dye 'bleed-through' which can even penetrate primer and gloss paint. We recommend applying primer to the body parts if you plan to use TS paints, which ever colour you choose. Once again – as if there was any doubt – Tamiya have come up with an impeccable miniature rendition of this Italian classicin-the-making, replicating its razor-sharp lines in flawless polystyrene in a way only Tamiya know how. All you might want to add is a little carbon-fibre effect decal on the front mudguard and you have a potentially stunning miniature Ducati in the making. he USS Buchanan was one of 66 Gleaves Class destroyers, a typical representative of the destroyers the US built during the years before the war. Unlike Japan or Germany, the US did not build large destroyers, opting instead for smaller, simpler designs which could be mass produced more easily. The thinking was, that since destroyers are mostly for patrolling and escorting, numbers are more important than size. History proved them right. The USS Buchanan was awarded one 'Presidential Unit Citation' and sixteen 'Battle Stars', making her one of the most decorated ships in the history of the US Navy. In 1949 she was sold to Turkey, where she served until 1976. Her distinguished record played no part whatsoever in my wanting to build her, though. I built her because of her ultra-cool version of the 'Measure 12' camouflage!

THE KIT

This kit was the first of a series of US and German destroyers that Dragon started to issue in 2008, some of the best ship kits ever issued in 1:350. The fit and the level of detail is

excellent and a small set of PE is included. As usual, radars and railings are not included in the PE set, so I also bought a set of PE from Gold Medal Models. An excellent set with clear instructions. Dragons instructions, on the other hand, do not distinguish themselves by their clarity. They are not their worst, but there were several occasions when I could not make out how the parts were to go together. I had to go scouting in books and on the internet to find out. It must also be made clear though, that even with high quality mouldings, this kit is no easy build and is not for beginners. For an experienced builder though, it offers the possibility of building a well detailed little gem. As reference, I would like to recommend 'Warship Pictorial No.31 USS Buchanan', which contains a number of excellent colour photos. For various reasons (having to do with my move to Berlin) I ended up not buying the book, which turned out to be a bit of a limitation. On the other hand, the kit seems to be pretty accurate and in this case my focus was

on painting and giving the model a convincing overall appearance, rather than creating a historically correct miniature replica.

STARTING THE BUILD

The build started with the gluing together of the upper and lower hull parts. Since the hull is rather small, the usual fit problems between the upper and lower parts did not occur. Plenty of liquid cement and pressing the parts hard together, basically did it. A small amount of putty and some sanding did the rest. It's not usually this easy. The fitting of the deck parts into the hull was equally problem free. What little of the joints that could be seen, would later be concealed by the railings. The upperworks, on the other hand, offered some challenges. When bulkheads and decks are glued together, a visible joint inevitably occurs and you get the classic problem: How do you fill and sand a joint, without ruining the surrounding surface detail? I solved the problem by simply sanding most of the details down and replaced them with scratchbuilt ones or with PE.

PAINT JOB V THE USS Buchanan's interestinglooking camouflage was, as mentioned, the main reason I built her. On the cover of Nicholas A and Armand H Veronicoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book 'Battlestations' (MBI Publishing) there is the colour photo of her that first brought her to my attention. The book contains colour photos of US ships from WWII, and is a goldmine for ship builders, especially if one is looking for reference pictures of weathered ships. True to my habit I started the paint job by priming everything with 'Chaos Black' from

Games Workshop. It sticks really well both to plastic and metal, and provides an excellent foundation for the Vallejo paints I then use. I used and airbrush throughout unless otherwise stated. Once the primer was dry, I painted the boot-line dark grey and then 'livened it up' by over-spraying it with a thin mist of brownish black in a cloudy pattern. I avoid monochrome surfaces like the plague, they kill the impression of a model. Note that I do not give you any numbers for the colours I use. I am very much against 'painting by numbers' and I think it leads to boring

models. You develop much more as a modeller and painter, if you mix your colours yourself. I masked the boot line with Tamiya tape, and then proceeded to paint the lower hull using my usual method. I spray a chaotic pattern of light brown, light green, dark brown and dark green over the black primer. Over this brown-green chaos, I then sprayed a very thin half transparent layer of brownish red. The thing is to stop in time, or you'll get a monochrome surface. In my experience it's best to stop when the contrast still looks too

stark in the strong light that I paint under. Then, when I look at the model in normal light, the lower hull will look appropriately worn and overgrown with algae. I described this painting procedure more in detail in my article on Dragon's Scharnhorst in the September 2012 issue of TMMI. The lower hull was then masked off and I went on to paint the decks. The decks of US Navy decks were during WWII usually painted Deck Blue, a colour that quickly got discoloured There are colour photos, where the Deck Blue is more brown than

blue. Using Prussian Blue as a basis, I mixed a basic Deck Blue, by adding some light grey. To this mixture I then added some light brown, to make it look a little bleached. I painted the decks in this still relatively clean looking Deck Blue, then sprayed some gloss lacquer over it, and then applied the excellent decals, that represent the anti-slip surfaces. With plenty of Micro-sol and Micro-set the decals conformed really well to the engraved deck surfaces. Once the decals had properly set and dried, I 'weathered them in', by over-spraying them with several thin mists of Deck Blue mixed out with more light brown. The decks were masked off and I then painted the three-colour camouflage. I mixed the three colours, Navy Blue, Ocean Gray and Haze Gray into three empty Vallejo bottles. When mixing the colours I used samples from Squadron Signal's 'Warships No.10 Essex Class Carriers In Action' as a reference. Other books on my shelf also had samples of these colours and as can be expected, the samples don't match one another. Part of the problem is that the US Navy changed the specifications for the colours as the war went along. There is plenty of room for research here if you are into that sort of thing.

ADJUSTING THE COLOURS

I mixed my colours with the samples from 'Warships No.10' as a starting point, and then I tried them out by painting the camouflage pattern on a piece of scrap plastic. I then adjusted the shades until the overall impression of the camouflage matched that of the photos in my books. I painted the hull in Navy Blue, the darkest of the three colours. Over this coat I then sprayed a thin cloudy layer of Navy Blue, mixed with light brown, along the waterline, corresponding to the discolouring often seen in this area. The areas that were to be Navy Blue were then masked off with Tamiya tape. I put a wide piece of tape on a piece of acrylic sheet and started cutting out the camouflage pattern with a sharp knife. Ambitiously, I started to try to recreate the camouflage pattern exactly as on the real ship, but the technical difficulty of it, and lack of patience, got the better of me, so I settled for 'close enough'. Once done with the masking, I then painted the hull and the sides of the superstructure with Ocean Gray. As with the Navy Blue I also painted a brownish discolouring where the Ocean Gray is close to the waterline. On the superstructure I took care to spray at right angles to the sides and slightly

If you’ve not got shelf-room for a larger scale, this little kit of the parasol-winged Hs126 might be an attractive proposition. It’s a very simple but well moulded kit with easy to fit wing struts and a modular undercarriage unit.

By doing this, the black primer will not be completely overpainted on the undersides of the surface details, which makes them darker, thus emphasizing the shadows and bringing the surface detail out. I then mixed Ocean Gray with some bleached yellow and sprayed from above, so that the upper edges of the surface details got a lighter nuance, thus bringing out the highlights. This technique of emphasising shadows and highlights allows me to use less of those hard-to-control washes in the latter stages of the painting process. Now came the tricky work of masking the Ocean Gray. It was easy enough on the flat sides of the hull, but I had to be very careful on the superstructure, where the camouflage pattern went across PE handrails and ladders. One way was to cut the masking so that it went right up to the handrail and then to cut another piece for the continuation on the other side of the handrail. Another way was to make a loose fold in the masking tape as it crossed the handrail or the ladder. I took care to not press the tape on to the fragile PE parts in order to minimize risk of them coming off or being deformed when removing the masking tape.

THE FINAL REVEAL!

When I painted the next colour, Haze Gray, I took care to spray at right angles to the

surfaces where the masking tape crossed the PE parts, in order to avoid paint creeping in under the masking tape. As with the Ocean Gray, I let the primer shine through on the undersides of the surface details and emphasised the upper edges with a lighter nuance. Having painted and masked all these colours, the model was now almost completely covered in masking tape. Knowing how much that can go wrong in these cases, I was a bit tensed when I carefully started removing the masking tape. I was pleasantly surprised. Only one piece of PE handrail came loose, and the demarcation between the colours was surprisingly crisp in the places where the masking tape had made loose folds over the PE parts. Seeing that the basic paint job had gone so well, I put the superstructure and the guns loosely in their places, took some photos and felt quite happy with myself. All details were primed and then painted in the colour of their surroundings. Just like on the superstructure, I let the dark primer shine through on their undersides. From above I sprayed them with a lighter shade of their basic colour.

VARYING VARNISH LUSTRE

The hull, superstructure and the details were given a very thin black colour-wash and were then carefully drybrushed with a lighter shade of their basic colour.

This delicate system of props (a piece of plastic card, rod and a pair of tweezers) was used to hold the ship’s boats in place while the glue sets.

I try to minimize my use of washes, since I find them hard to control. The railings were painted in a slightly darker shade of Ocean Gray. This way they look thinner and become less prominent. With all the parts in place, all that remained was to spray the model in different mixes of half matt clear varnish. By mixing matt and gloss you can get just the flatness or shine you want. I made the area along the waterline and the decks the flattest, the upper parts of the hull sides slightly shinier and the bottom a bit shinier still. It's remarkable how much these subtle differences in shine can enhance the overall appearance of your model. It was lots of work for such a small model, but it was definitely worth it. She has that special ship model quality. The more you look, the more details you see. It

never ends. Although the waterline joint of this model gave me less trouble than usual, I still maintain that waterline joints should be prohibited! ●

WARRIOR Marcus Nicholls builds a pre-production example of Tamiya's all-new 1:35 WW1 British Mk.IV Male tank

ith the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War being commemorated in August 2014, model kit manufacturers are turning their attention to the key vehicles that took part in the conflict. Tamiya are one of these companies and even though the first tanks didn't appear on the battlefield until 1917, they have created an all-new 1:35 kit of the British Mk.IV 'Male' to pay tribute to the crews, the conflict and the technology. The kit will be the first WW1 model kit ever released by Tamiya and the company's researchers travelled to Britain to measure up existing examples of the vehicle and to photograph it extensively. The result is a spectacular rendering of this iconic machine, capturing its bulky outline perfectly and also its boilerplate surface detail consisting of hundreds of rivets. One slightly unusual element is the addition of a small electric motor to propel the model in a straight line forwards, via a set of fully articulated tracks. Upon its announcement, this feature caused a little controversy, some modellers seeming to think would make the kit toy-like. But in reality, it's a finely detailed, scale model that just happens to come with a motor (although our pre-production review sample came without it) and it can be completed to a high standard, bypassing the mechanical additions if so desired.

FULL BUILD: FIRST WORLD WAR TAMIYA 1:35 TAMIYA WW1 BRITISH TANK MK.IV MALE â&#x2014;? KIT NO.30057

BUILD-UP V MK.IV The model is fairly straight-

forward to build and the basic structure can be completed in a couple of days; it consists of flat panels just like the real tank and the kit parts are engineered to allow for easy alignment. As mentioned, the review model came without the motor/gearbox and associated battery box and wires and these components are incorporated into the hull as assembly progresses. To allow the batteries (two AA cells) to be changed, the gun sponsons are designed to be removable from the hull via a system of polycaps; the battery box is held in place with Velcro pads. If, like us, you do not intend to use the motorisation system, the sponsons can be cemented in place and the slight gaps around their edges sealed up for a more scale-like result. Likewise, the main hull roof is also a pull-off item to allow access to the interior and this is best cemented in place if you're going for a static display option. Unlike more modern tanks which feature large road wheels, the Mk.IV utilised a simple running gear of twenty-six rollers of two patterns along the lower portion of the side panels. The kit replicates this feature and even though they will be completely hidden when complete, both types of roller are provided. The two patterns do not simply alternate along the hull; there's a specific sequence to be followed, outlined clearly in the instructions. The gun sponsons feature detailed replicas of the 6-pounder guns that equipped the 'Male' version of the tank (the 'Female' was fitted with machine guns) and these can be at least partially observed on the finished model thanks to individually moulded crew doors on the rear face of each sponson. Other than these, there is no further internal detailing

The roof is on. It was cemented in place as no access will be needed to the interior on this build, but it can be removed thanks to polycap fasteners.

In the test shot, the drive sprockets and idlers will be found on the kit sprues and have a scale-like appearance. Harder wearing items to drive the tracks will also be included in the full-production kit.

in the kit. As you'd expect, Tamiya's Mk.IV is finely detailed and well researched and will build up into a fine replica of this historic vehicle. The motorisation feature is a slightly unusual addition and not to most modellers' tastes, but that aside, it's very welcome addition to the Military Miniatures Series. The release of a British Mk.IV Male tank is a very significant moment for Tamiya and I was delighted when it was announced. Having now built the kit – albeit from a pre-production sample with final adjustments still to be made – I can attest to it being a very fine model with all the detail touches we know and love from Tamiya. Once again, Tamiya prove their prowess in the art of injection-moulding and this model is a triumph of detail and engineering. Buy and build with confidence! ●

The rollers must be fitted in a specific order and it's not just a simple, alternating sequence. The instructions show this clearly. Some groups overlap too and fitting them is quite a fiddly operation.

The gun was painted in a black/ brown colour, then rubbed with graphite powder to add a metallic sheen. The inside of the sponson was painted off-white and given a light colour-wash, with a few streaking rust spots.

Two moulded-in hatch handles on the hull roof were replaced with copper wire, but this was the only modification made to the review model.

The tracks in Tamiya's Mk.IV are the easiest to assemble individual-link tracks ever included in a tank kit. They simply click together and remain fully articulated. A tiny moulding point is present on each tread-bar and this can be easily sanded off using a foam sanding stick.

Here we can see just how flexible Tamiya’s tracks are! They were painted in a dark brown colour then treated to a rust-toned colour wash (mixed from Tamiya X-6 Orange, XF-10 Flat Brown and X-21 Flat Base) then given a ‘dust-wash’ using the Humbrol Enamels shown on the opposite page.

The white patches were masked up and the red (Tamiya XF-7 Flat Red) was then airbrushed on. The white and red identification flashes on the forward hull and driver's roof were painted before the main colours were applied, starting with an undercoat of XF-2 Flat White.

If you undertake even the smallest amount of detail work and minor scratchbuilding on your models, you’ll need a precise and consistent way of measuring plastic card and rod etc., and a steel ruler has its limits. A digital caliper is an affordable way (£15.95) to measure very fine tolerances (down to 0.1mm, more than enough for scale modelling) and can measure external and internal dimensions. The instrument can toggle between millimetres and inches and opens out to over 110mm.

To seal off the markings in readiness for the camouflage colours, Tamiya masking tape was applied for the edges, back-filled with latex liquid mask (Vallejo 28.850).

The undertrack areas and roadwheels were sprayed with black/brown acrylic paint mix. Much of this will be hidden but it eliminates the chance of bare plastic being seen on the finished model. The main shade used was Tamiya XF-49 Khaki, which seemed to look right.

An undercoat of acrylic green was applied to provide an appropriately coloured base layer.

No decals were included in the TMMI sample so we had to improvise! Dry-transfer markings from an Archer set were applied to the rear hull sides.

Weathering was kept extremely simple, with airbrushed layers of dried mud/dust sprayed up the hull sides. The colour used for this was a 50/50 mix of Humbrol Matt 148 and Matt 234, thinned. This allowed the paint to be 'streaked' with a brush dampened with white spirit to create a rain-stained finish as can be seen in the photos of the finished model.

Of course, these items are vital for any emplaced Bofors gun or M42 Duster, since the guns used prodigious quantities of ammunition. The set includes several types of box, including the common square metal box which could contain clips of four shells, as well as two sizes of wooden boxes which contained the shells singly in cardboard fibre tubes for transportation. Interestingly, there are also tall watertight aluminium cases, which protected the rounds when used on ships, and also saw use with USMC and US Army units in Vietnam. Large numbers of clips of shells are provided, ready for use in the gun, as well as some empty clips which were ejected from the gun once the shells had been fired. '72 JUMP TREA This month, Spencer Pollard builds Airfix's small but perfectly formed 1:72 Harrier GR.3 and adds his own special touches

f all of the kits that I have built over the years, the Airfix 1:72 Harrier is perhaps the most important. As a young modeller, this was one of the very first kits that I built, bought I seem to remember on holiday and then glued together without painting, soon after returning home. I also remember making a mistake during construction and rather than leave it as it was, I took the model apart, rebuilt it and then wondered why it was now covered, from top to toe, in glue… Released in 1969, the then

new Airfix kit was more of a Kestrel than a true GR.1 Harrier and though state of the art at the time, lacked any real finesse, many of the aircraft’s delicate features being treated with a heavy hand by the kit’s designers. Over the years it was reboxed and then in 1982, reworked into a Gr.3 complete with laser nose and tail mods. It was in this form that this ancient kit remained in the catalogue until Airfix decided to create a brand-new kit to replace what had for many years, been an ancient relic…

NEW AND IMPROVED…

Airfix have released two new first generation Harriers, the GR.1 and the later GR.3. Both of these kits share common sprues, details, weapons and decals differentiating the different boxes. Though this is a sensible move on their part and on the whole makes the construction of the kit very straightforward, it has resulted in a slight compromise in that the tail fins in both kits are the same. As you may well know, the fin of the GR.3 is 5” taller to take into account

the Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) fitted to its leading edge, but Airfix simply modified the GR.1 tail by adding the sensor, but didn’t notice the height issue. This is a simple fix: either add a new fin tip with plastic card, or do as I did and use an aftermarket part… That slight slip-up does little to dampen your enthusiasm for what is essentially a very fine kit. Detail is comprehensive, moulding first class and the overall levels of accuracy and finesse, top drawer. There are many features

to enjoy. The wheel bays for instance are nice and deep; intake doors are supplied as optional, open or closed inserts; nose with or without I-Band transponder; an upper wing that is prototypically provided in one long section; tailplanes that are joined to allow a degree of deflection; weighted tyres and weapons, though hardly a comprehensive selection, well detailed and delicately rendered. It is, to all intents and purposes, a delightfully, comprehensive package. From the moment that

the Airfix brand was taken over by Hornby, the kits have seen an incremental improvement and nowhere has this been more evident than in the reproduction of panel lines. Earlier kits from this generation saw trench-like panels that were debated endlessly, comparisons being made with many of Airfixâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; major rivals. As they have learned their trade, the designers have finessed these features and now, as proven in this kit, they can stand alongside many of the kits produced elsewhere. Though perhaps

still a little too deep (which is subjective, I know), they are wonderfully sharp and comprehensive. The grey plastic used by Airfix shows these off well and helps give the modeller an indication of what the

The intakes fit well, only a smear of Mr Surfacer being needed to fill any small gaps. There is a moulding imperfection that runs over the top of the forward fuselage that needs to be filled and sanded smooth. Here it is in the process of being dealt with.

Fine, stiff, sanding sticks were used to smooth over the intake joints, their inflexible nature ensuring that the surface curves remained true.

Small intakes were carefully hollowed out with fine drill bits and then shaped with the tip of a No.10 scalpel blade.

a wash, without being overdone as a result. I like them and I like the direction that the designers are going with each and every release. Alongside the quality of the actual components, one must comment of the clever design of this kit. Unlike the GR.9 that was released several years ago, this one is broken down into very simple components that in many ways mirror the original release. A full-length fuselage and large upper wing takes care of much of the airframe and as a result of not trying to milk the moulds to create a Sea Harrier, the nose in moulded in situ, only the nose cone being separate. Fit, across the board, is very good indeed. As many of the components are designed to locate across natural panel lines, careful alignment prior to reaching for the glue brush, will help cut down on the amount of filling and sanding needed to produce a seamless finish. The only areas that caused concern in this case were the upper wing to fuselage joints, slight gaps where the intakes blend into the blown fuselage sides and the lower fuselage panel that includes the airbrake bay. None of these joints was difficult to deal with, a smear of Mr Surfacer being a sensible solution. Though there is much to admire, there are a few areas that could have been better. The cockpit for instance, though featuring a neat ejector seat, lacks console and instrument panel detail. Decals are offered - and indeed, were used as part of this build but they cannot replace fine detail. When other areas of the kit are so neatly dealt

with, why not the cockpit? The weapons are similarly worthy of comment, the gun pods being rather blank affairs and then the Sidewinders heavily detailed, with large fuselage rings and overly-thick fins. Add thick sprue gates that are very difficult to clean up and the need to replace these missiles, should you choose to use them at all, becomes self evident…

CONSTRUCTION – A FEW THOUGHTS

Building this kit is not going to tax too many modellers keen to add it to their collections. The sensible nature of its breakdown and the degree of finesse that has been incorporated into not only the moulding of the components, but also their fit, ensures that all but an absolute beginner with be able to build it with ease. That said, there are a few areas worth discussing in order to improve things even further. Work begins in the cockpit. This was built from the box in this case, but a little work with some rod and strip would work wonders in improving what’s on offer. The consoles are decorated with finely printed decals, each of these fitting well. Though neatly detailed, there is no reason why a few drops of colour here and there couldn’t be painted on to garnish their look, further. The seat is well detailed, but lacks straps. In this case they were added using thin strips of Tamiya masking tape painted in various shades of khaki and grey to create the illusion of a fully detailed seat. Given the size of the cockpit in the completed model, this was really all it needed!

The kit’s tail-fin is around 2mm too short and so it was replaced with Freightdog’s resin part.

Before closing up the fuselage halves, the instructions guide you through the construction of the intake interior and nose-wheel bay. This is where I deviated from the instructions, choosing to fix the outer intake parts in place, clean up their joints and then assemble and paint the interior. In order to ensure that the fit was not going to be an issue, the walls of the wheel bay were not joined to each half of the intake tunnel, but rather glued together, the tunnel halves painted and fixed in place, the fan added and then the now complete bay, snapped into place. Dry-runs ensured that this was possible, very little glue being needed to hold it all together once done. You’ll also see in the photos that prior to fixing the intake tunnel in place, the outer edges of the intakes/fuselage were airbrushed in their final camouflage colours, the edges of the parts creating a neat demarcation between colours without masking. Filling the intakes with a small piece of foam was all that was needed to mask these areas during the application of the camouflage, later on. With the internals dealt with, the airframe goes together very quickly. The

instructions guide you through the removal of the auxiliary intakes that sit on top of the engine access panels (a carry-over from the GR.1 kit) as do they, the opening of the various locating holes for the under-fuselage pylon that carries the rece pod and external refuelling probe – the latter, left off until final assembly. As mentioned earlier, the tailplanes are deigned to move, a pin and slot being used to fix them to the tail. In order to not only simplify any cleaning up that may be needed around the tail, but also painting of the camouflage, it was decided to build all of the tail sans tailplanes and then split the single part into two, so that they could be fitted later on after painting. As it turned out this was a sensible move the fit of the upper panel and tail cone needing considerable fettling before the rear fuselage looked nice and smooth. Whilst working on this part of the model the small vents that are found around the tail-boom were either redefined or added to, constant checks to reference photos being needed to ensure all additional work was correctly carried out. Completing the airframe leads us nicely on to the smaller details that festoon

the aircraft, as well as the weapons and their pylons. In the main, detail is sufficiently good that most of these items can be used as-is, though some fettling to reduce the size of some of the smaller items such as aerials is a must if the illusion of fine scale is to be maintained. Though the underwing tanks and SNEB pods were used as supplied (a fair amount of cleaning up of seams being needed to do so) the 30mm Aden gun pods were improved by opening up their muzzles that are moulded solid. Care needs to be taken when doing this,

each pod being moulded in two halves and so if the glue is not fully set, the drill bit will bite into the soft joint, opening it up as it does so. In order to prevent this happening, superglue (CA) was used, an accelerator helping to speed up the drying time, setting the glue rock-hard within seconds. This method also allowed the pods to be sanded smooth with no evidence of any seams, the CA acting as both an adhesive and filler. Whilst dealing with the gun pods and with drill bit in hand, many of the smaller vents and openings that can

The undercarriage is well handled by Airfix, including a pleasing level of detail. More than that though, this is one of the few Harrier kits that allows the model to sit correctly. Look at any picture of a Harrier on the ground and you will see that it looks heavy, crouching down as if on its haunches. Many kits model the aircraft as if on tip-toes, its nose pointing upwards at too extreme an angle. Not so here; much like their Gr.9 kit, Airfix have gotten the stance just right, the compression of the nose gear looking like it is under load. Well-done Airfix! Constructing the undercarriage is a straightforward process, despite as done here, deviations are made from the suggested assembly sequence. The kit’s nose leg is split into two halves that trap the wheel in place. Never feeling that this allows the leg to be cleaned up neatly, or the wheel painted with any degree of finesse, the leg was assembled sans wheel, the location pegs being removed and then a hole drilled in one side of the leg to allow a plastic card axle to be used to fix the wheel in place after painting. Whilst working on this, the small door that attaches to the top of the leg was removed and a far finer plastic card piece, created to replace the grossly over-scale kit part, glued in place.

In order to create a slightly more candid looking model, the ailerons were removed and set at slightly deflected angles. This was a simple job that improved the look of the model, no end…

Some aftermarket bits and pieces were bought for the model, a brass pitot tube and etched brass ladder. The ladder will be used once the model is set on a base, later this year…

In order to simplify painting and make the clean-up of the tail easier, the once-piece tailplanes were split in half so that they could be painted separately from the rest of the airframe.

CAMOUFLAGE AND MARKINGS

Airfix offer two options in their kit, a drab No.1(F) Squadron aircraft flown during the Falklands War in wrap-around Dark Sea Grey and Dark Green camouflage, or a No.4(R) Squadron aircraft with Light Aircraft Grey Undersides. Being fond of the wrap-around scheme, that was the one chosen, but to be a little different, the 1 Squadron markings on the nose were added from a

spare decals sheet, to show it after its trip to the South Atlantic. Painting and weathering of this model was kept simple. Though the demarcation between the two colours looks to be rather sharp in reality – thus necessitating some floating masks – the camouflage was sprayed freehand, heavily diluted Gunze Sangyo acrylics, thinned with Mr Color thinner, helping to get the

job done. The model was first prepared by masking off the openings and then spraying it with several thin layers a Tamiya’s Fine Surface Primer. This helps to not only reveal any surface imperfections, but also create a durable surface onto which the subsequent paint layers can bond. Along with the airframe, the smaller items such as the undercarriage, canopy, weapons and jet exhausts were mounted on

cocktail sticks and primer ready for their individual colours to be applied. With the primer dry (less than five minutes thanks to my trusty hairdryer!), the first colour, Dark Sea Grey (H331) could be sprayed on. This was done in a number of thin layers, the paint being applied in even strokes to ensure that everything was covered and the finish was smooth. Happy that was so the model was set aside overnight to dry. The Dark Green (H330) camouflage has a distinctive pattern and so the instructions were followed carefully to ensure that each area of green was sprayed on to match accurately, the drawings supplied. In order to keep the edges as tight as possible, the paint was thinned with around 70% thinners, the air pressure from my compressor being kept at around 20psi. The successful application of camouflage on any model is dependent on a number of factors: high quality paint, thinning, consistent airflow and a dual-action airbrush that is up to the task. In this case, the paint was sprayed using an Iwata HP-CH fitted with a fine head assembly that allowed the paint to be sprayed cleanly in lines around .5mm across. Though not as tight as that produced using masks, the look of the model was sufficiently natural that the compromise was deemed worthwhile.

TIME FOR MARKINGS

Having completed the airbrushing, all of the parts were coated in several thin layers of Tamiya X-22 Clear and then set aside to dry

ready for the decals. As usual with Airfix decals these days, they performed flawlessly the use of small drops of Daco’s Strong setting solution helping to snuggle them down over the kit’s surface features. You will also need to indulge in a little forward planning, too; the underwing serials and roundels sit underneath the pylons, so don’t be tempted to fix those in place before applying the decals! Slide the decals onto the model, let them dry out thoroughly and then trim out the slots with a new scalpel blade before fixing the pylons and weapons, in place. The smaller details are fun to paint, especially if you take time to add as many colours and details as you can. For instance, the rear jet pipes and fuselage panels were sprayed with Alclad II metallics over a base-coat of Tamiya’s primer, several shades being used to create well-worn, metal parts. The weapons were similarly treated to a layer of Alclad, before masking off the rocket cones and spraying them with matt black, washes with a little Dark Earth enamel to create a used look. The drop tanks are another aspect of this model that can be made to look a little more interesting with some thought. Though the instructions suggest simply spraying them dark Green, a few reference shots showed all manner of different colours, one in particular,

Once coated in a layer of Vallejo matt varnish, all of the finishing layers come together to produce a natural looking model.

The panel lines were carefully defined with thin washes of Raw Umber oil paint thinned with white spirit.

The nose of the aircraft is dominated by that cool-looking in-flight refuelling probe. The GR.3 kit offers alternative noses, one with the I-Band transponder in place, and the other with the original thimble nose as fitted to the GR.3. As you can see here, the former was chosen for this build. Small paint chips were applied around the clips on the engine panels to add further interest to the finish.

was painted Dark Sea Grey. Liking this look, one of the tanks on the model was painted Dark Green and then its front third masked off and sprayed with a layer of Dark Sea Grey. Once dry, both tanks were sprayed in Clear, decalled, vanished and then weathered to match the rest of the model. Though it would have been appropriate to go to town on the weathering of this model, a little more restraint was used, washes around the panel lines and some sooty deposits on the rear fuselage, being all that was needed to create a little interest. Given its small size, subtlety is most definitely the key here, washes that are only a couple of shades up from the underlying colours being most appropriate. I’ve seen lots of 1:72 models spoiled by the use of black for panel line washes, whereas more muted tones such as dark grey, dark green or shades of brown would have been more in keeping with the scale and size of the finished model.

FINISHING OFF…

Happy that the model was painted and weathered completely, the smaller details could be fixed in place. Work began on the undercarriage. The biggest hurdle that anyone will face when building a Harrier model is getting all five wheels on the ground at the same time. More often that not you’ll see a model with one of the outriggers floating in midair, because the twin wheels under the fuselage have been set too far down. Solving this problem though, is child’s play. Glue the nose gear and outriggers in place, ensuring that they are all at the correct angles. Adjust where necessary, twisting the nose-wheel so that its flat-spot is in contact with the ground. Leave this to set overnight. You can now fix the under-fuselage wheels in place. To do this add a drop of 5-Minute epoxy into the locating hole and then add the leg. Turn the model over so that it rests on the other wheels and let the free-floating leg drop under it’s own weight onto the tyres, once again checking that the flat-spots are in

the correct position. All five wheels should now be in contact with the ground. Leave to set. Simple eh?

FINAL THOUGHTS

I’ve waited a long time to add a first generation Harrier to my 1:72 collection and so when this kit appeared, I was keen to get cracking on it. The delicate nature of the aircraft has been well handled by Airfix and thanks to some sensible engineering and well thought out details, the resulting model is every inch a Harrier. It looks right, it sits right and there’s plenty of features to either build as is, or improve further as you see fit. This one took a little longer to build than I had planned, but now that it’s finished, I’m delighted to display it alongside my GR.9. Now, where did I put that Sea Harrier..? ●

KIT PREVIEW FREEDOM MODEL KITS US NAVY UCAS X-47B ● KIT NO.FD18001

STEALTHY OBSERVATION – NAVY STYLE Freedom Model Kits’ first release is

reedom Model Kits is a new company from China and for their first kit release they have chosen the intriguing unmanned aerial vehicle, the X-47B. This slightly sinister-looking aircraft is an experimental unmanned combat air vehicle developed by Northrop Grumman for the United States Navy’s carrier-based operations. The X-47B made its maiden flight in 2011 and successfully performed a series of land and carrier-based exercises in 2013. It continues to undergo flight testing and Northrop Grumman aims to develop the prototype into the battlefield-ready ‘UCLASS’ (Unmanned CarrierLaunched Surveillance and Strike) system to enter service before 2020. FMK’s model is presented in the popular scale of 1:48 and this results in a fairly sizeable airframe. The kit is moulded in conventional, mid-grey polystyrene and is supplemented with a 4 x 2.5cm fret of photo-etched brass. A sheet waterslide decals provides options for two schemes and the names of eleven US aircraft carriers are supplied, so you can depict your model ‘in

the US Navy’s experimental X-47B deployment’, which of course is a little previous for this experimental machine! The fuselage/lifting body comes in upper and lower halves and sensibly, they are substantially moulded with a generous wall-thickness to avoid warping. The engine intake trunking and exhaust is provided for the inside the fuselage and it comes in two halves with intake/exhaust fan discs set internally. Neither will be particularly visible on the finished model but it’s a thoughtful inclusion, and nice to know they are there. The twin weapons bays are depicted in full within the lower half and are impressively detailed, all the more so when you check out the instructions where you’ll see the nicely detailed bay doors with their individual hinges. A pair of GBU-32 bombs are provided for the bays although this prototype machine was never armed. In fact it’s the undersurfaces of this aircraft where the most interesting parts will be found; the top side is rather plain, as there’s no cockpit of course. The undercarriage appears well detailed and if you want to add more detail, references can be found online. Like

the weapons bay doors, the undercarriage doors feature individually moulded hinge rods which adds considerably to the detail here. The outer winglets can be fitted in the extended or folded position and to achieve this, a pair of well detailed hinges (non-working) are supplied for the folded option; the extended option utilises a pair of stout tabs to fix the outer wings firmly in place. The winglets also feature open/closed airbrake options, only applicable when they are extended of course. This is an impressive first release and an eye-catching and memorable subject choice too. This is a generic name for what is clearly the International MaxxPro, but presumably they have skirted around using the name for licensing reasons. The kit comes moulded in grey polystyrene which, in this author’s opinion, is by far the most satisfactory colour for almost any model kit subject. It features comprehensive chassis detail, the main fame building up from side rails, crossmembers, leaf springs and shock absorbers to form a substantial structure to which the crew ‘pod’ is affixed. The upper cabin and crew compartment builds up panel by panel into a solidfeeling box and it features a decent level of interior detail, with seats, stowage racks, radio and more all provided. It’s worth searching online for detail photos for any extras you might wish to add to the compartment but as it comes, it’s a good enough for most purposes and will look impressive with the rear ramp lowered. The driver’s cabin is well appointed too, with foot pedals (often omitted) and a good level of detail present. The armoured cabin doors are moulded individually, so the driver’s station can be shown off to full advantage. The roof-top turret is a detailed subassembly, coming with clear glazing panels and a choice of either .50cal HMG or Mk.19 40mm grenade launcher. The tyres are provided in the form of hollowmoulded, flexible items moulded in black vinyl. They sport excellent tread detail and even feature the characteristically dimpled sidewall pattern, but they do not feature any moulded data detail, nor manufacturer logos etc. If you want this, it’s worth keeping an eye out for the DEF Model resin tyre set for this kit, which will feature the missing detail, plus a weighted, bulged appearance for complete realism. DORNIER DO335B www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE; 1:32 • MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS • KIT NUMBER; 01E07 There are a number of subjects that you sort of dream will one day be released in 1:32. Just a handful of years ago, it perhaps seemed that those subjects wouldn’t see the light of day for the foreseeable future. Of course, we perhaps didn’t vouch for a company such as HK Models making a big hit in our hobby, in more ways than one. HK Models, in quite a short period, have already brought us a B-17, three B-25 variants, a Meteor, and there is a Mosquito expected, as well as other planned B-17 kits. Apart from the Mosquito, the other releases represent the bulk of planned releases that formed the original Wingscale brand that eventually became HK Models. The Dornier Do 335B represents the first release from HK that has nothing to do with Wingscale. This kit is certainly no weekend project, and comprises fifteen light grey styrene sprues (inclusive of a couple of duplicated sprues for engines etc), and one clear sprue. It’s obvious from the break-down of this model (a test-shot is reviewed here) that HK intend to produce further variants of this aircraft. The model has a fully detailed interior, including bomb bay. No bombs can be seen in this kit though, despite an image on the HK Models Facebook Page showing one. The cockpit is always a focal point for the modeller, and when you are doing something in this scale, it needs to look correct. Bearing in mind that I have no instructions at the moment, and no way of absolutely seeing exactly what goes into the cockpit, the parts I can identify look very good. The main part of the ‘office’ is based around a single part tub which has some great console detail. There seems very little need to add any aftermarket to this at all. The kit also presents weighted wheels with separate hubs, amazingly detailed undercarriage bays, and great looking u/c struts. Ejector pin marks on the inside of the main gear doors will be hidden by attaching the strut. James Hatch Surface detail is some of the very best I’ve seen in this scale. The exterior is indeed riveted, and that riveting is quite complex looking. Panel lines are extremely fine, as are access panels and plates A few ejector pin marks and some sink marks on the propeller blades, but these might be corrected in the fullproduction kits

Add to this two, very packed photo-etched sets that provide a host of additional cockpit details such as the console and instrument panel faces, ejector-seat pulls, exquisite seat harnesses (in pre-cut fabric from Eduard/HGW Models), canopy frame edges (a big detail improvement) and many more enhancement and this release begins to make sense; all the extras you need are in the box. The icing on the cake are the decals, offering five, colourful schemes from the Vietnam War era (VF-84 Jolly Rogers, VMFA-542 Bengals, VMFA323 Death Rattlers, VF-161 Chargers and VF-111 Sundowners) plus a full set of airframe data stencils and you have quite a lot of kit for your money. All you really need is cement and paint! MN

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA CYLON RAIDER www.moebiusmodels.com SCALE; 1:32 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; 941 I have to admit I was delighted when I opened the latest parcel from the USA and saw this kit inside; Moebius Model’s latest kit from the original TV series of Battlestar Galactica, the Cylon Raider. It’s not the first model of this fabulous design from the show of course, but this time it’s in 1:32 and therefore it is huge, as you might just be able to see from the photos of me holding some of the parts. Moebius have done marvellous job here, engineering a kit that is finely detailed and accurate in profile, whilst retaining a buildability and excellent fit of parts that will allow a relative novice to cope with assembly. The model builds up from large upper and lower hull halves and there’s plenty of space here to fit in an LED lighting system and battery box; in fact I think an enterprising modeller somewhere has already come up with such a set for this model. One very fun part of the kit is the faithful replication of the random model kit components that were used by the TV special effects people who made the prop for filming; we can see a Centurion engine deck (Tamiya?), sections of track, gun barrel halves, breech blocks, an 88mm Flak base, tank drive sprockets, F1 car gearbox halves and more. All this just adds to the fun, making this already spectacular release all the more rewarding. MN

GERMAN 1-TON HALF-TRACK SD.KFZ.10 www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:35 • MATERIALS; IM, WS • KIT NUMBER; 37016 This is Italeri’s older kit of the Demag halftrack, dating back to possibly the 1970s, and it came out at a time when Italeri were pretty much ahead of everyone when it came to armour kits; it still holds it own even to this day. With this fact in mind, it was a wise move by Tamiya to re-issue the model with a few key enhancements that give an extra touch of polish to the areas of the model that needed it the most; the rifle racks, improved canvas cover, new tools and three figures. The tracks come moulded on the kit sprues and are in ‘link and length’ form; they are serviceable but you might wish to replace them with an aftermarket set for a more naturalistic appearance, but other than that, this is an excellent model that just needs creative painting and weathering treatments to bring to life. Windscreens are provided in the form of pre-cut acetate sheets which is a nice touch. The model comes with Tamiya’s German infantry sprue (1994 vintage) which provides MG34, MG42, KAR98, MP40 plus water bottles, gas masks, bread-bags and other items of personal gear. Also in the box is Tamiya’s excellent 2010 jerrycan set which features a vehicle jack, Notek lights, towing cable ends and some boxes. MN

It’s an oldish base kit but an excellent one at that; Tamiya would never have chosen it for this treatment otherwise. Still very fine detail and accurate lines You might need new tracks for full realism although the kit-supplied ones aren’t bad at all

US NAVY AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS SARATOGA CV-3 www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:700 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; 31713 Tamiya have gone for a 100% new tooling for this kit of the famous United States Navy carrier and it shows; the detail is stunning, from the waterline to the Hellcats and Avengers on her deck. She’s not a small kit either, the flight deck measuring nearly fifteen and a half inches in length (around 38.5cm). Hull-sides are rendered with a subtle mixture of raised and recessed detail as are the island, funnel and other superstructure parts. The model is waterline only so you’ll need either a seascape or a smart base plate to display it once complete. The carrier is depicted as she appeared at the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945 and the aircraft appropriate to the period of the war, with radar pods on the wings and markings for the gloss blue airframe colour. The finest parts such as anti-aircraft guns, life-rafts etc., are particularly fine and will look very crisp when in place. SUNDERLAND MK.III www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:72 • MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS • KIT NUMBER; 1352 This is the second incarnation of Italeri’s new-tool Sunderland kit, the Mk.I being released a couple of years back. In this issue we have a revised upper fuselage with a cut-out for the dorsal turret plus ‘hedgehog’ exhaust outlets and associated support struts. The new turret builds into a drop-in fairing and is the main visually distinguishing characteristic of the Mk.III. Italeri also provide the antenna arrays for the upper and rear fuselage and these are made up from injection moulded masts with photo-etched elements for an in-scale result, and they look good. What looks less good (still) is the somewhat over-emphasised panel detail of the fuselage which, whilst not a deal breaker, does look a bit too prominent for the scale. Some modellers have reduced the effect by painting in thinned modelling putty along the panel lines and then sanding over the top. It must be said that it looks much better under a layer of paint. Overall, an excellent version to chose and with a little extra work, an excellent model can result. CULIN HEDGEROW CUTTER The 'Culin' device is well-known to armour modellers as an addition to US tanks in the post-D-Day campaign in Normandy. Its conception (and thus its name) is generally attributed to Sgt. Curtis G Culin III although according to military historian Max Hastings, the Sergeant was apparently inspired by “a Tennessee hillbilly named Roberts” who, during a discussion on how US tanks could penetrate the dense 'bocage' (the wall-like hedgerows between the small fields that dotted some areas of the Normandy countryside) suggested “Why don't we get some saw teeth and put them on the front of the tank and cut through these hedges?”. Culin recognized the idea's potential. The teeth were thus made from the 'hedgehog' beach obstacles that had

confronted the liberation forces days and weeks earlier and thus the 'Culin Hedgerow Cutter' was born. The beauty of this device for armour modellers is that, while a general form was followed, each cutter was unique, with rough-cut edges and prominent welding seams and they are great fun to make from plastic card! So why not add one to the next M5, M4 and M10 that you build, so long it was a post- D-Day machine.
