THERING OF EAGLES TMMI's Editor Marcus Nicholls flies out to Squadron's headquarters near Dallas, Texas to report from the Eagle Quest model show

B

ack in June this year, over the weekend of 15th 17th, I travelled from London to Squadron's hometown of Carrollton in the Dallas/

Fort Worth area to cover the company's highly esteemed 'Eagle Quest' event that encompasses a competition, presentations, very generous raffles and more. For those

interested, I flew out on an American Airlines Boeing 777-300, flying direct. The good quality entertainment system (HD screen) plus gin and tonics made the ten hour flight go a little easier... After an evening's rest, it was an early start at Squadron's incredible model warehouse to avail myself of their extremely generous 40% discount. Ultimately I purchased just the one kit,

Bandai's new 1:144 Star Wars AT-AT whose price was too good to refuse. I reviewed this spectacular kit last issue and hope to build it at some point. As well as the competition entries – some photos of which you can see in this report – many seminars and demonstrations took place, covering scale modellingrelated topics such as scratchbuilding, the use of

effects, working with oil paints plus my own which focused on the painting of model aircraft cockpits. I must admit that I'm not a particularly confident public speaker but armed with an airbrush, compressor, paints, a camera, lights, microphone and projection screen, I felt reasonably comfortable. My gratitude must go to TMMI collaborator Stan Spooner who helped me prepare for the talk. Fitting in perfectly with this year's theme of '10,000 Days of Thunder, Vietnam: a Tribute to Valor', the 2017 keynote speaker was Mr Dan King, a retired Chief Warrant Officer and helicopter pilot with the US Army who flew Hueys in the late 1960s and early '70s during the Vietnam War. His combat tours were with the 240th Assault Helicopter Company, Vietnam 1969/70 and a twelve month tour working with the South Vietnamese Air Force as Test Pilot Trainer in 1973/74 when the US pulled out all its troops. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in June 1970, thirty-three Air Medal Awards (one for every twenty-five combat missions), Bronze

10

Star, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry (individual and unit) and Vietnamese Civic Action Medal (individual and unit). Dan's speech was fascinating and his anecdotes from the war will stay with me for a long time. Eagle Quest is the largest peer-judged model show in the USA and draws in some high quality model work from local enthusiasts plus modellers from across the country too. Some entries were just begging for a close inspection, such as an extraordinary, scratchbuilt 1:24 Caterpillar 6020B Mining Excavator and the wild 'Double Trouble' twin-engined Harley Davidson. Both of these were works of art with staggering amounts of detail. The more conventional entries deserved respect too and prizes were won by many. Over the next few pages you can see some photos from the event that hopefully convey the variety and quality of the models entered. My thanks go to Squadron's CEO Gwynne Gorr for inviting me to attend the event and Richard Poulsen for being my chauffeur and landlord during the show, I am very grateful for your support, help and generosity. â—?

FULL-BUILD: WW2 MODELLING TAMIYA 1:48 RUSSIAN 1.5 TON CARGO TRUCK MODEL ● KIT NO.32577

Sancar Buhur takes a break from 1:35 models to his favourite scale of 1:48, with a three-tone painted Russian truck

THE COLOURFUL RUSSI T

here is one thing I have to confess about my modelling style. Although I like to build all scale armoured vehicles, quarter-inch scale is always close to my heart; they are nicely detailed, easy to build and I treat them like a form of therapy from more complex builds. When I was struggling once again with work and also my Phd, I wanted an easy-to-build and nice looking model, so I picked one of the latest Tamiya 1:48 kits, the 1.5 ton Russian Cargo Truck. During the war, Russians used these trucks for many purposes and generally painted green. To be honest, although green is very suitable colour to practise painting styles and shows

14

the weathering effects well, this time I wanted to paint differently. After some internet searches, I found an example of the same truck painted in three tones.

CONSTRUCTION

When I opened the kit box, I had a little smile on my face. As I had read in reviews, a really nicely detailed model was waiting for me. The model is formed from dark green plastic and all parts are crisply detailed and perfectly moulded. The model contains a total of five figures; four infantrymen riding in the cargo bay and one driver, for modellers who want to use this model in dioramas or vignettes. As I don't like to paint figures, I decided to build

only the truck and place some accessories in the cargo tray. Assembly was pretty easy and I finished construction very rapidly, with an amazing fit of parts. I only needed to use putty only for the join-lines on the bonnet to lessen their depth. As for extra detail, I added only a scratchbuilt wiper to the driver's side which is the missing detail from the model.

PAINTING

If you search reference photos of this truck, mostly you will find the green-painted version. When I found an example in three-colour camo I said to myself “that's it, I have to paint this”! In the profile illustration, the chassis

was painted black and the body/cargo deck were in the yellow, green and dark brown camouflage. After the building steps were complete, I started painting immediately. As a first step, as usual, I primed the whole model and its accessories using Mr Surfacer 1000. After the priming was done, the model was ready for the first layers of paint. I started by spraying the chassis black. I generally like to use Tamiya colours for airbrushing and I added a few drops of Tamiya X-22 Clear into Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black for the truck's underpinnings; I always add

SSIAN The kit builds up quickly and easily and filler was only used to reduce the depth of the join-line on the engine cover. This kit would make an excellent introduction to the hobby for a beginner or someone returning to modelling

Once assembly was complete, the whole model was given a coat of Mr Primer Surfacer 1000. The chassis was painted XF-1 Flat Black, as was standard

V a little X-22 to my all paints

to create slight sheen which makes the finish better looking, to my eyes. I like the tone of Tamiya XF-65 Field Grey when painting Russian green and I airbrushed this colour out of the bottle (thinned) onto the model to create the darker and deeper shades. Then I started adding Tamiya XF-2 Flat White to the green to create lighter tones, as I like to have 'cold' tones in my greens; if you want to achieve warmer green tones, add yellowish colours to the base mix.

CAMOUFLAGE COLOURS

After the green was dry, I masked the model up and painted the remaining two camo colours, which are dark yellow and dark brown. I used Tamiya XF-60 for the Dark Yellow and XF-64 Red Brown and both were lightened by adding more flat white. After the three tones of camo had been airbrushed, I peeled off the masking tape and

16

September 2017 TMMI 263

whoah! A sweet-looking model was ready for its highlights. Before applying the lightened shades, to see the colours better I applied a very thin layer of raw umber oil colour-wash on the model. I highlighted the truck with different Vallejo colours using a sharp-tipped brush. For the next step, I started with the 'chipping' of the truck's paint to create a beaten-up effect. Very patiently, I applied the chipping to all three colours of the camouflage using once again Vallejo paints. To simulate a worn wood effect in the cargo deck, I used combination of Vallejo's Panzer Aces 'Old Wood' and Game Color 'Bone White'. After the deck was ready I turned to metal parts of the truck. Using black and brownish tones, I finished off the second chipping process. To form some dirt deposits on the chassis and wheels I prepared a mixture consisting of Tamiya Acrylics, very fine sawdust, white glue and water. Using an old

For the base green colour, the author chose Tamiya XF-65 Field Grey, which is a useful ‘do-it-all’ green for many applications. The colour was lightened with XF-2 Flat White to create tonal variation as seen here

U

Here we can see the cabin and cargo deck being masked up for camouflage application

26/07/2017 15:00

Following the sand-coloured areas (Tamiya XF-60 Dark Yellow) the brown portions of the truck’s camouflage were airbrushed, using Tamiya XF-64 Red Brown

As with the green areas, the sand and brown camouflage patches were highlighted with lightened mixes of the basic colours, creating the subtly faded effect we can observe here

By applying Vallejo acrylics (www.creativemodels.co.uk) by brush, prominent areas of the truck were given hard-edged highlights; notably the cargo deck structural elements. A worn, scraped effect was created on the cargo deck floor using Vallejo Panzer Aces ‘Old Wood’

The wheels were given radial scrapes and scratches using further Vallejo paints. The mud effect was created with earth tones from Tamiya, applied by brush

V brush, I applied this mixture

to the places I wanted to see dirt build-ups on the undersides. To give a dusty appearance to the model, I prepared a diluted mixture of three Revell enamel colours and applied them to the model in rough stripes. After a few minutes of drying, using a thinnermoistened brush I 'washed out' the dust colour as much as I could. This forces the thinned enamel paint into recesses where it would naturally collect and

achieves a nice-looking dust affect. For the final steps I applied a dusting effect to the 'glass' parts using my airbrush plus some touches with raw umber oil paint to break up the dusty appearance on the model. I used combination of raw umber and black oils for the dirty oil effects in the cargo tray. If you want very nicely detailed and easy to build model, I definitely recommend this kit. Special thanks to TMMI's Editor for sending me this kit to build. â—?

The Messerschmitt Me262 was the world’s first operational jet powered fighter aircraft. Its design had actually started before the beginning of the Second World War, but it wasn’t until the war started to turn against the Nazi regime that the development work was speeded up. By April 1944 when the machine was finally introduced into service it was a giant leap forward in flight performance over contemporary piston engine fighters. Having incredible straight line performance. It was able to out accelerate anything the Allies had and Its four 30mm cannons also packed a devastating punch.

KIT PREVIEW AIRFIX 1:72 ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH WHITLEY GR.MK.VII ● KIT NO.A09009

GUARDIAN OF BRITAIN’S COASTLINE The Coastal Command version of the RAF Whitley bomber has arrived!

A

s one of Airfix’s ‘new generation’ kits to which we have been treated in recent times, the 1:72 Armstrong Whitworth Whitley came as quite a (pleasant) surprise, to us at least. The subject is not especially glamorous, as much as a WW2 bomber could be, but it is very charismatic and has elegant, distinctly 1930s lines. Airfix launched the initial Whitley kit – the Mk.V – in 2015 and the model being reviewed here is the second release, the GR Mk.VII, which comes with two markings-options; a machine of ‘BOAC’ based at the Great West Aerodrome (now Heathrow Airport), 1942 and an RAF Coastal Command GR.Mk. VII based at Limavady, County Londonderry, November 1941. The former has a blanked-off nose which gives the aircraft a somewhat pugnacious – dare we

say ugly – appearance, but this is made up for by the Dark Earth/Dark Green camouflage over silver-doped undersides and huge civil registration codes ‘G-AGDY’ on the upper and lower wing surfaces. The latter machine has the familiar Coastal Command white sides and under surfaces with Extra Dark Sea Grey/Dark Slate Grey top-surface camouflage. With a nose gun turret fitted it looks much more natural. For this machine, anti-submarine warfare dorsal antennae are provided and they are reasonably scale-like, but for a more refined look, Eduard offer one of their ‘Big Ed’ sets for this kit, which, along with a heap of fantastic interior and landing-flap detail, also provides the arrays in realistically delicate photo-etched brass. The model’s parts come in

a rather pleasant pale lilac-grey polystyrene and they are beautifully formed, with varied and subtle ribbing patterns in the wings and fine, recessed panel lines in the fuselage. Cockpit detail is excellent and the bomb bay doors can be fitted open or closed. When open, we can see the detailed bay roof and bomb-load, complete with individually moulded racks, very nice. The main undercarriage wheels have appropriately flattened tyres and the clear parts are admirably thin and clear. Overall then, a very interesting subject, depicted in 1:72 by a superb, modern kit. Good quality decals and clear instructions complete the package. ● AVAILABILITY; Airfix models and materials are widely available from good model shops and online. www.airfix.com

KIT PREVIEW TAKOM 1:35 US MEDIUM TANK M47 E/M ● KIT NO.2072

Markings for Iraqi and Spanish Army M47s are supplied in this release

PATTON MAKER The ‘middle’ Patton tank is reborn in 1:35, thanks to Takom

F

or many years there was a family of Patton tanks in the US military, starting with the M46 (the M26 Pershing’s replacement) followed by the M47 and the M48 and its descendent the M60, although the latter was never officially named after the (in) famous general. Takom have chosen the middle tank of the family tree as their latest subject and it was a good choice because the vehicle found its way into various armies of the world and thus presents the modeller with a decent range of colour schemes and markings to choose from. Having said that, the review kit we received, the M47 E/M, offers just two basic schemes; overall sand for the Iraqi Army and overall green for the Spanish Army; model No.2070, the M47/G comes with a wider range of colour schemes including

Pakistan, South Korean and Jordanian armies. The kit parts are all-new and use nothing from the old Italeri model. The suspension is fully depicted with individual swing-arms and dampers and to ensure all parts line up properly once cemented in place, moulded plastic jigs are provided for each side. The jigs have a second use as assembly formers for the link-and-length tracks, allowing them to be built up off the model (but on the sprockets and idlers) for painting, then transferred to the running gear. This type of track is difficult to depict in kit form because the end and central connectors (the latter with the guide-horn) pivot on the links and they look ‘stiff’ if they are all set in a straight position. Takom have moulded the connectors at an appropriate angle on the single links that wrap around the sprockets

and idlers and so long as the correct parts are used in the right locations, the result should be very accurate and natural. The turret of this kit is a masterpiece, with a casting texture in all the right places, although there are mould-part seams that need removal, followed by gentle re-texturing where they have been scraped off. The commander’s cupola comes with a clear insert for its vision blocks and the gun barrel is offered with no less than four muzzle brakes and covered or ‘naked’ mantlets. From this in-box inspection it looks like an excellent model that captures the salient features of this Cold War machine: the proof will be in the building of course. ● AVAILABILITY; Takom models are widely available from good model shops and online. www.pocketbond.co.uk

T

he Morbidelli 125 was what might be called a 'clean sheet of paper' design. Its designer created, for 1975, a new bike inspired by the concepts of the earlier '70s from Giancarlo Morbidelli and Franco Ringhini. A new engine was developed with cylinders tilted forward by 45° and a proven rotary-valve system, but in this case fitted with two 28mm Mikuni carburettors. The engine thus configured was able to develop 40bhp at 14,500rpm. The chassis, deeply revised, was lightened with Marzocchi forks with 30mm stems and Marzocchi rear gas-dampers. The braking system consisted of one rear and two front discs with double-piston clamps by Scarab. The total weight of the bike was about 80kg and, with the power available, allowed the riders to reach a maximum speed of 238km/h. The bike won three consecutive world titles from 1975 to 1977. The scale model in question concerns the 1976 version with which Pier Paolo Bianchi won his first titled title. I want to write about how, by chance, I found myself with this wonderful kit in my hands. It all stems from the great friendship I have with Luciano Brach Zanino (Brach Model) and when we happened to talk about motorcycles and motors (our passion) on the occasion of the annual ASI Moto Show in Varano, Italy a few years ago. The idea was came from Luciano who had the desire to make an Italian model of the vintage racing series. A friendship with Pier Paolo Bianchi, the winner of three world titles, also came to fruition, and so the choice could only be the Morbidelli 125, a winning machine that in the world of motorcycle racing has gained a world-wide repetition. Hence, here we have a kit with over 500 highly detailed resin parts with the addition of metal and photo-etched parts.

The PE parts are not overwhelming in quantity, but the chain is assembled link by link!

The decal sheet is well printed and usefully, provides the light blue portions of the livery

V ASSEMBLY The castings that make

up the kit are extremely precise and clean and allow assembly to proceed with speed. Casting flaws are virtually non-existent and the use of abrasive paper was only necessary to clean up the parts when removed from their casting plugs. The first section of assembly concerns the frame, which is made up from six parts that form the double cradle, glued

together with cyanoacrylate adhesive. The 'heart' of the model, the engine, is a little work of art from Luciano and consists of crankcase, cylinder block, cylinder head, clutch and water pump. All engine components were cast individually to better recreate the powerplant as it is in reality and also to allow modellers to work on individual parts using colours and surface effects more precisely targeted.

The resin parts are finely detailed and just require an undercoat of Tamiya primer after clean-up

For anyone who has doubts about the quality of the kit and the quantity of its details, one only has to take a look at the supplied nuts, hexagon bolts (with and without washers) plus lock-nuts and more; everything on the real bike also exists in the kit. These should be fitted separately as if you were working on the real engine, rather than gluing them, to tell you the truth, I wanted to screw them in!

Instead of a gloss white coat, the author chose to polish up the white primer for a retro off-white

A dry-run confirms the fit of the engine block within the assembled frame; they’ll be painted individually. After some layers of black and aluminium, the frame and engine start to look more lifelike

PAINTING

As usual, after being cleaned up and before painting, all components were washed with a degreasing detergent. This step is essential for the removal of residues from the moulding process. I used Tamiya White Primer on all parts. Once the paint had cured, I checked for any imperfections and corrected a few points with a stroke of abrasive paper, then painted each casting in the

A bronze-coloured aerosol paint was used to re-create a scale-like gold effect on the wheels

The bike is really starting to take shape here. The brakes, shock-absorbers, engine and exhaust are all in place, each with a creatively applied paint finish. The ‘body’ parts – fuel tank, upper/lower cowlings and seat-back – are next to be fitted and great care will be needed to avoid causing damage

appropriate colour. The chassis, fork stems and rear swing arm were treated with TS-29 Semi-Gloss Black, while for the bodywork, tank, tail fairing and lower cowling, finding the correct white was not easy. For a late '70s bike, the colours were not as brilliant as they are on today's GP machines, so I tried an experiment by

painting it all with Tamiya White Primer and then finding the right semi-gloss finish by polishing the painted parts with Tamiya Compound.

PAINTING THE WHEELS

For the rims, after several colour tests, I was convinced that a bronze-coloured aerosol (an Italian product called 'Effetto Bronzo' by

OBI) faithfully reproduced the real colour of the wheels. For the engine and all other mechanical parts, I used Tamiya TS-17 Gloss Aluminium. After spraying this base colour I applied localised colour-washes of Tamiya X-19 Smoke, using various dilutions to create depth to the detail and to also suggest the presence of a film of dirt that would

have been seen on the engines of the time, sealing everything with transparent semi-gloss varnish. The model was now almost assembled, just needing the radiator and its pipes (for which the photo-etched fittings provided in the kit), the braking system, the battery and its cables, coils and the small tachometer on the dashboard. A

titanic but little-known battle was fought in early 1945, for the conquest of East Prussia, a German territory north of present-day Poland, including the emblematic towns of Tilsit and Koenigsberg (now Sovetsk and Kaliningrad, in Russian territory). At dawn on the 12th January, the Russian army launched the enormous 'Vistula Offensive'. More than 3.8 million men, supported by 53,000 guns, 10,000 tanks and almost 8,000 aircraft attacked the German defence line from the Baltic shores, to the Romanian border and the south of Hungary. The action of our diorama takes place in Tilsit at the beginning of February 1945. The city has just fallen into the hands of the Russian soldiers of the "3rd Belarusian Front" commanded by Marshal Rokossovsky. They joyfully greet the powerful JS-2M armoured personnel who helped them in their victorious progression with their formidable 122mm guns. The strategy of the Blitzkrieg, a German invention, was assimilated by the Russians...

This view shows the completed tank being checked for fit on the diorama, which is just taking shape

THE JS-2M TANK

During Operation Barbarossa in the summer of 1941, the KV1 and T-34/76 tanks had been a very unpleasant surprise for the German General Staff, their qualities of speed, armament and armour making them formidable opponents for the Panzer IVs with short-barrelled guns, not to mention other types of light Panzers. The Germans had responded by putting the Tiger I into service in November 1942, then the Panther, which was strongly inspired by the T-34, in the summer of 1943. In response, the Russians first updated their excellent T-34 with a More powerful 85mm gun and a larger turret (T-34/85), then put into service the JS (IS for Ioseph Stalin) tanks. The JS-1 armed with a 85mm gun was placed by a new version, armed with a 122mm gun and this lead to the JS-2, then to the JS-2 model 44 after correction of a number of upgrades. The enormous

impact of the 122mm D-25.T cannon was often enough to stop the German tanks encountered and its shells worked wonders against fortifications and buildings. The JS-2M's armour, 120mm thick at the front and 60° inclined, provided excellent ballistic protection at the usual combat distances.

TAMIYA'S 1:35 JS-2M

Launched in 2007, this is an excellent kit, that fits the philosophy of the Japanese brand, namely maximum detail with ease of assembly. The model represents a late-production vehicle typical of the Chelyabinsk

plant. The kit consists of 268 parts of finely moulded dark green plastic, two photo-etched engine grilles, a set of polycaps for the suspension and gun barrel, a length of nylon cord to represent the tow cable, plus decals. A combination of versatile soft vinyl tracks plus their more detailed equivalent in kit plastic is also provided. The turret and the hull have a nice casting effect, although possibly a bit too subtle for a Russian AFV of the 1940s. This will be my main point of personal improvement during the assembly.

UPGRADES

Basic assembly does not raise any particular talking points, so I will limit myself to explaining the various improvements I made and modifications carried out to adapt the model to the diorama. Before any assembling, I began by enhancing the 'raw foundry' texture of the hull and turret. I applied plastic model cement and before evaporation, I created surface relief by tapping it with a hard brush or a toothbrush. The texture created was then softened by a light sanding with 800 grit water-based abrasive paper,

once it had dried. Many parts can be improved by removing the moulded details and replacing them with photo-etched or scratchbuilt replacements: additional tank fasteners, track-guards (especially if you want to represent them twisted or damaged), side lockers, turret periscope guards, fasteners etc. I used the extraordinary detail sets of Voyager Model (35221) which allows one to refine the overall model exterior. Some of the set's photo-etched parts are difficult to handle due to their small size; we all reach

U

The back of the building is less visible is but still required much modelling work. We can clearly see the different materials used to represent the partition walls

Mini Review... BRENGUN MODEL ACCESSORIES 1:48 KI-61-ID HIEN FLAPS, detail set (FOR TAMIYA) ITEM NO. BRL48082 and BRL48083 www.brengun.cz

Tamiya’s recently issued 1:48 Ki-61 ‘Hien’ (Tony) barely needs any extra detailing, but Brengun have come up with two sets for the kit and they are rather neat. The landing flaps come with cross-members with lightning holes and the flaps’ inner faces carry some superb, half-etched detail. The general detail set provides main undercarriage door liners, cabling, instrument panel faces, seatbelts, seat, switchgear, UC scissor-links and more. All good stuff for adding more to an already superb model.

V a time when our big fingers

and eyes can no longer keep up with these products! Photo-etched metal, by its very nature, is flat and is not always the best solution to represent bulkier parts, so it is important to assess what's appropriate when using these improvement sets. The bulk of the work consisted of replacing the mudguards with those in PE, then twisting and damaging them as in reality. Beware, however, the model becomes very delicate to handle. The exterior fuel tanks of the model were attacked with a cutter blade and a Maxicraft milling cutter in order to depict the damage frequently suffered by these components. They were then sanded lightly to achieve a realistic result and finally were given their batch of PE parts (side handles and fasteners) and resin (filling plugs). After the addition of a bulb and some aluminium paint inside, the main headlight received a much more realistic transparent lens, also from the Voyager Model set. The 12.7mm 'Dushka' machine gun, not included in the kit, was taken from a Tamiya JS-3 kit (thank you Jerome!). Even though this machine gun was

often taken off during the campaign to avoid getting caught it tramway power lines, pictures show it in place on some JS-2s in Germany in the spring of 1945. It was improved by the addition of a scratchbuilt sight system using plastic card. The synthetic cord tow rope was replaced by a home-made cable made from four or five pieces of wire braided together using the rotational motion a mini drill. The flexible cable thus obtained can be bent to shape very realistically to fit to the model.

PAINTING

The action being in February 1945, a winter camouflaged scheme seemed logical and attested to by many photos. The first step was the transition of a light grey over the entire model in order to standardize the basic shade of all the materials between them. Over a layer of Tamiya XF-19 Sky Grey (acting as a primer), a brown-black pre-shade was made with a mixture of Tamiya acrylics. The main 'Russian Green' hue was then airbrushed in thin layers to preserve the effect of pre-shading. It was made from a mixture based on Mr Hobby H55,

The vacuum-formed street section by Remi was too small and so was adapted to the baseboard and then painted, although on the finished diorama, we can't see much of it

No need to invest in commercial accessories to make the rubble. Tinted plaster slabs were cast and then patiently chopped up

The door frames of the Verlinden kit fit very badly to the building and a lot of adjustments were be necessary. Pieces of clear plastic cut out from food packaging represent the remains of broken glass

Just a few of the elements that will eventually join the diorama

plus H59, H303 and H1 of the same brand. To achieve winter camouflage without resorting to the technique of hair lacquer that I do not use (long-term resistance?), I simply used the airbrush to apply Humbrol enamel flat white in a patchy, uneven layer. Just as it would be done with warm water on hairspray, I used cotton and fabrics slightly moistened with white spirit to scratch and rub off the whitewash. The acrylic is insensitive to white spirit and the effect is created in record time. Be careful, however, to observe the real effects by referring to the photos of time. The whitewash disintegrates vertically most of the time, following the runoff of water on the surfaces of the tank.

FIGURINES

These are mostly derived from two Dragon sets of Russian infantrymen dressed in quilted winter ensembles called "TĂŠlogreika". Some were modified either by altering the poses or by the addition of more detailed or expressive resin heads from the Hornet brand, the basic principle being to

adapt the poses to a general atmosphere of victorious feasting! The figures were painted with Rembrandt and Winsor and Newton oils. Given the fairly large number of characters (fourteen), I used a faster technique than for contest figures, based on a basic Humbrol base layer

close to the final shade but lighter, applying oil paints in the hollows, using an similar but darker shade. For the eyes, the basic 'almond' shape was painted with dark brown then two white points (not using pure white) then mark out the iris and pupil. Not fun for those with shaky hands!

THE DIORAMA

The dioramic scene is based on a simple piece of particle board around 12mm thick, enhanced by wooden edges, sanded then painted grey. The groundwork is a section of vacuum-formed paved street from the 'RĂŠmi' brand plus a Verlinden Productions building in plaster. The

big enough so it was cut up to be positioned to cover the base as much as possible. Painting the cobbles involved five different Humbrol colours, after applying a grey base coat. The ruined Verlinden building was heavily modified, its facade being

altered to represent the typical architecture of the brick buildings found in East Prussia. The stone structure was re-sculpted with a fine pointed tool and the faรงade coating was then reproduced by the careful application of Mr Surfacer in two or three coats. The three colours of the faรงades were inspired

by looking at video clips of East Prussia found on the internet. The interior rooms of the two adjoining buildings were created from scratch using balsa wood of various shapes to form the ceilings, floors and joists and also the window frames (or what remains of them) which are absent from the

Verlinden kit. Created from cast gypsum blocks and then broken into small pieces, the street rubble was glued over blocks of Styrofoam insulation foam so as not to have to resort to astronomical quantities and unnecessarily weigh down the diorama whose weight was already substantial.

Just a few touches on the diorama and the tank, because although early and harsh, the winter of '44-45 was also very short. According to the photos, there was not much snow left in February '45. This diorama is part of a vast project to represent the Second World War, year by year, collectively presented in public exhibitions at commemorative events such as the 70th anniversary of the Allied victory in Europe, in 2015. I'm proud to say that it received the 'Best Of Show' (Bruno Carsuzaa Prize) at the International Competition of Models of the Saumur Tank Museum in 2015. ●

In addition to the appearance of general finesse, the use of photo-etched parts allows the modeller to reproduce realistic damage (here on the track-guards)

MISSION MODELS, USA

www.missionmodelsus.com Last issue we used Mission Models' new range of super-fine acrylic paints to finish Tamiya's 1:35 Matilda II tank and were very impressed by the results; the paints are almost grainless and flow through the airbrush flawlessly. They stay wet on the model's surface long enough for a self-levelling effect to take place and they cover extremely well. Each bottle comes with a stirring ball inside to ensure all the pigment is distributed in the medium; a good two-minute shake is needed to guarantee this has taken place. Modellers of WW2 Luftwaffe subjects will be delighted as Mission have expanded their range of RLM-matched shades, as well as adding RAF earlywar colours, LRDG pink plus some interesting metallics to the line-up. Plus Model's latest little wonder in laser-cut wood is a jetty, featuring planked decking and a handrail in wood, plus buffers and a life-ring in resin. It could form the heart of an attractive diorama and is easy to assemble. Also new is a set of beer and lemonade crates (laser-cut wood) with clear-cast bottles in resin. Each bottle is provided with a label (waterslide decal). In Plus Model's 'Easy Line' we have a set of four resin cast suitcases plus travel stickers (decals) which are perfect for adding to a tank's crew stowage etc. 1:35 JETTY, LASER CARVED WOODEN PARTS (500) BEERY AND LEMONADE CRATES (422) SUITCASES (EL061)

www.star-decals.net Star Decals are very productive these days and some of their latest sets cover some attractive modelling subjects. Tamiya's recently issued 1:35 Matilda II tank lends itself for conversion into an Australian machine and there are two decal sets for it. Takom's new 1:35 FV432 gets some new markings for IFOR, UN and a machine from Operation Granby, but always check your references if the kits require extra modification other than new markings. The photo-etched sheet from the Renaissance set allows the cabin interior to be detailed-up with side partitions, plus new parts for the steering wheel, pedals and the gear shift lever. simply changed some elements of the engine in order to decrease its power. Before moving on to the painting stages, there were still some modifications to be made. The front and rear hoods must be cut out and replaced with their resin counterparts from the Renaissance set. To do this,

For the painting of the rims, masks were made using a template to draw circles onto Tamiya masking tape. The original gold wheels were then painted XF-2 Flat White, followed by X-14 Sky Blue

I scored the shut-lines several times with an X-Acto blade and, since the plastic is very flexible, the two sections of the central section of the body were separated quickly and cleanly. I used a mild file to clean up the surfaces to be cemented. The livery consists of a blue central band

The cabin has been mounted to the chassis and the door interiors (painted X-11 Chrome Silver) are also fitted in this view. The bulkhead was painted X-7 Red. Once the cement had hardened, the front axle was assembled with its wheels.

as well as the ‘NART ‘ name and some small logos. The application of the decals went smoothly with Micro Sol softener, with only the strip on the front cover requiring a slight touch-up of X-4 Sky Blue. After evaporation of the solvent or ‘flashing off’, I applied two thin layers of Renaissance’s own polyurethane varnish followed by a further thicker coat. After twenty-four hours of drying, the entire bodywork was polished out using Tamiya Polishing Compound (Fine + Finish).

The new resin front cowling in the foreground reveals less obvious differences than the rear parts

FINISHING LINE

Before fitting the bodywork to the chassis, the final work on the body, such as fixing the windows and headlights and accentuating the shut-lines was carried out. The photo-etched parts, rear-view mirrors, wiper blade and rear hood fasteners were also attached using cyanoacrylate glue. For those who wish to take the plunge and embark on a conversion of this type, I would simply suggest having good references and to arm themselves with a little courage. But what a challenge! ●

F-4S PHANTOM II www.zoukeimura.co.jp SCALE 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO.SUPER WINGS SERIES NO.5 Zoukei Mura’s new 1:48 F-4S Phantom II has arrived and the maker provides an impressive boxful of parts to recreate this iconic Cold War jet. All airframe components are moulded in mid-grey polystyrene, with a clear sprue carrying canopy parts for the open position (individual sections) and a one-piece moulding for the closed-up cockpit. Unusually, just one markings-option is supplied for an F-4S (BuNo153808) from VF-161 off USS Midway 1981. The Cartograf-printed sheet carries the striking red/white lightning flash emblem but the modeller must paint the tailfin black, quite a sensible plan really. Airframe data stencils are included, as well as some for the cockpit side-consoles, but these are best avoided. The console parts sport some superb raised detail and it’s better just to carefully paint this instead of use decals. A generous quantity of ordnance is included with the kit, making this a very complete model.

REVELL, EUROPE

STAR WARS X-34 LANDSPEEDER LIMITED EDITION www.revell.de/en SCALE 1:14 MATERIALS; IM ITEM NO.06050 Revell released this new-tool Landspeeder around six years ago and it’s a very decent replica of Luke Skywalker’s Tatooine transport. The proportions look authentic and even the canopy – thankfully, separately bagged – is respectably thin. The craft is moulded in upper and lower hull-halves with a tub for the cabin containing seats, ‘dashboard’, coaming, steering wheel and gear-lever (!) and individually formed side grilles. As in the film, the left-side engine is missing its cowling and the powerplant and its pipework can be seen, a very nice touch of detail. C3PO and Luke are provided in the form of flexible plastic figurines and whilst the golden android is a very acceptable replica, Luke’s neck looks a tad long and could do with one vertebra less; something the modeller could do with a sharp modelling knife. Overall, a nice kit that has masses of superdetailing and gizmologizing potential.

Impressive detail on all surfaces; the cockpit and its seats are a work of art. A very comprehensive production

Classic Star Wars design and a well executed kit with a huge amount of up-detailing potential. Comes with cement, paints and paintbrush

Just one decal option, but it is a very attractive one

The figure of Luke could a little remodelling to look more natural

TIRAN 4 MEDIUM TANK www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, CW, WS ITEM NO.2051 Takom have made use of their excellent T-54/55 mouldings to create the Tiran 4 tank, a design that originated from when Israeli forces pressed captured T-54 and T-55 tanks back into service. Various iterations were seen, including vehicles operated by the South Lebanese Army. Takom have chosen the Tiran 4 which was a T-54 with numerous modifications including a pintle-mounted .30 or .50cal machine-gun, new mud-flaps, loader’s hatch, aerial mounts plus IDF-pattern jerrycan holders, stowage boxes and other fittings. Takom’s kit includes all these mods and they do lend the tank a distinctively new look, the outward appearance of the turret being quite different, thanks to the stowage bins. The mouldings are exquisite, carrying excellent detail and formed with great finesse. The tracks are the individual-link, glue-together type and the fuelcell plumbing is included.

Very ‘modelgenic’ subject with masses of detail with appealing IDF (sand grey) and SLA (blue) colour options The tracks are good but Friulmodel’s metal links were born for this job

VOLKSWAGEN POLO R WRC 2015 www.hobbyco.net SCALE 1:24 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, PE, F, WS ITEM NO.BEL-010 This 1:24 release from Belkits depicts the VW Polo R WRC of the Monte Carlo Rally 2015 and uses the parts from their 2013 release plus new decals for the 2015 season. As before, the kit’s most important and impressive feature is the highly accurate Polo bodyshell which was developed in close cooperation with Volkswagen to ensure the profile was exact. This is an engineless production, with the underside of the powerplant represented by a one-piece sump/gearbox moulding that does the job well. The rest of the underside is fitted out with a comprehensive suspension system and drivetrain, although the constraints of the moulding process mean that there are no location holes for the ancillaries within the wheel arches. Their locations are indicated in the instructions but a printed, 1:1 drilling template would have been better. Great detail otherwise and PE brakes, seat harness hardware and stunning decals are plus points.

Extremely accurate bodyshell, lots of detail with PE included for harnesses and more Some suspension component locations are vague TMMI 263 September 2017

YOKOSUKA MXY7 OHKA MODEL 22 www.brengun.cz SCALE 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS ITEM NO.BRP48002 The Ohka is an enduringly fascinating subject and there are multiple kits of its different versions in various scales already on offer. Brengun’s new 1:48 kit depicts the Model 22 and comes with a groundhandling dolly, which makes the ideal way of displaying the finished model. The original’s sparse interior is well represented by a simple floor moulding with individually moulded control column, bucket seat and rudder bar; the basic instrument panel cements into the fuselage half as does the rear bulkhead. Cockpit wall structural ribbing completes the picture. Detail is excellent and the small canopy is perfectly moulded. The dolly is nicely complex with individual wheel axles, support blocks, wing-contoured brackets, draw-bar and hydraulic pump. Ten grammes of counterweight must be added to the model’s nosecone to keep things level but otherwise this looks like a straightforward build.

LETOV Š-16 LUFTWAFFE AND SLOVAK AIR FORCE www.brengun.cz SCALE 1:72 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS ITEM NO.BRP72024 Brengun’s 1:72 Letov Š-16 is a neat little kit of a surprisingly large aircraft that comes on just two sprues of brownishgrey polystyrene plus a fret of photo-etched brass, acetate film for the windscreen and a sheet of waterslide decals. The markings are for one of two aircraft; a Slovak Air Force example and an earlywar Luftwaffe machine, both in plain ‘khaki’ over aluminium dope; the swastikas are split in half on the sheet but are easy enough to align during application. The airframe detail is lovely, with subtle ribbing on the wings, realistically raised stringers along the fuselage crisply formed louvres on the engine cover. The mouldings are clean with virtually no flash in evidence. The kit professionally executed but some modelling experience will be helpful, particularly when working with the wing struts and rigging.

A simple airframe that will be quick to build, with excellent detail

Interesting and original subject, excellent detail and well moulded

Modelling experience will be helpful here, although not essential

he Saab 35 Draken (Dragon) supersonic fighter was manufactured by Saab from 1955 to 1974. The J35 was a very successful design from the Cold War period and was exported to Denmark, Finland and Austria as well as the USA as a test-pilot training aircraft. The Draken was the first fully supersonic aircraft to be deployed in Western Europe. As usual, before starting the actual construction I did dry run of the entire model, in order to see where any extra attention might be needed in the coming assembly phases. I began with the cockpit; in this limited edition we are presented with both resin and photo-etched parts

52

that enhance the overall detail of the model. In this case, pre-coloured PE for the instrument panel and consoles and a resin Brassin seat mark a significant upgrade from the plastic parts. As evidenced in the photos, the ex-Hasegawa plastic parts were processed to remove the surface detail, in order to create a uniform base for the PE parts. The seat and its parts are easily removed from their supports with help from an RB Productions hacksaw which is great for this kind of work. As for the instrument panel, it was enough to unite the two parts through the use of gloss varnish. I brush some on the first face which includes the various dial

quadrants for then place it over the second. Positioned with care and precision so as to align the various dials with their bezels, I let the piece dry and, to provide additional anchoring I used a few drops of cyanoacrylate on the upper edge. The remaining photo-etched parts were folded with tweezers and positioned with the use of super glue. The seat was painted while referring to a photo, with an aluminium colour for the structure and seat cushions in dark green, highlighted by the use of Kcolor and Vallejo acrylics. To finish it off, the various seat straps were fitted, being careful not to fracture the coloured film that coats the etched parts. Once in

place, I sprayed a layer of matt varnish and then applied colour-washes using Lifecolor pigments in order to give the seat an aged look. Once the cockpit was complete, I proceeded with the assembly of the airframe; fuselage, details and the wings. I did not find major fit problems, but some adjustments were required in the area between the exhaust and the rest of the fuselage, the air vents and the parts representing the muzzle of the gun. These three areas needed a targeted use of putty and cyanoacrylate in order to create a perfect fit. The smaller parts, such as the undercarriage legs, pylons and tanks received

some improvement work thanks to the dedicated PE in the Eduard box. I prepared the wheels (from Eduard's Brassin range and also included) and these would be painted during the later stages. The last step before painting was the preparation of the transparent parts. Using

the pre-cut set provided in the kit, I proceeded to mask off the outside canopy and windscreen. I detailed-up the instrument panel with the use of the supplied PE and acetate sheet to recreate the HUD and then cemented the windscreen and fixed the canopy in place. Over the black undercoat, the author airbrushed medium green for the main cockpit tub colour, subsequently highlighted with Tamiya XF-4

The seat was given a base colour of aluminium with details touched-in by hand

V PAINTING For this model, I relied on

the proven technique of the 'black base'. To do this, I used Mr. Surfacer 1500 Black which lends itself perfectly to this technique thanks to its semi-matt finish and grainless finish. As the Draken's central belly is bare metal, I followed the satin black with a layer of Humbrol 21 Gloss Black in order to easily work with metallising colours. As a base shade, I used Aluminium from Kcolor, followed by Steel to differentiate some panels. Thanks to their speed of drying, this work took place in just one airbrushing session. Using some of the new colours of the AK Extreme Metal I created further variations of metallic tone, closely observing reference photos. As suggested by the instructions and information on the web, this aircraft's wing undersurfaces were painted FS36173 Medium Grey and I used Kcolor acrylic paints for the purpose.

Once the upper camouflage colours were on, I created another effect. A peculiarity of this aircraft are two large 'patches' on the mid-wing areas that cover the old aircraft identification numbers, now positioned on the rear of fuselage, much smaller. To realistically reproduce this, I performed the same procedure done on the actual aircraft, making templates for the two big number '6' on the wings and then over-painting them with a dark olive green, Helo drab FS34031 to be precise. By performing irregular painting here, I allowed the old numbers to just show through, so as to create further ageing effects in this area. To finish the painting stages I used the same Helo drab to create some dirt in certain areas, evident in my reference photographs. With a lighter grey, I repainted some panels on the lower part of the plane to create a tonal variation and again to reproduce what I saw in the pictures of the Draken that I'd found on the 'net.

The moulded undercarriage legs are proved with photo-etched brass detail parts. The areas to be replaced have been marked with a marker pen

AK Interactive metallics were used on the jet pipe and afterburner ring The new brass parts make a significant difference to the look of the UC legs. With the canopy fitted and masked off, the completed airframe was undercoated in Mr Finishing Surfacer 1500 Black

If you prefer not to add a seated pilot to the cockpit of your aircraft model – and most modellers don’t because it will cover up lots of added detail – a standing figure is a good alternative. This new pilot in grey resin is cast to perfection and comes as a one-piece part. He wears the classic leather Cooper A-2 jacket as well as RayBan Aviators, and while nothing concerned with war should be considered cool, he looks cool. He carries his B-8 parachute and will look perfect in front of a combat-ready Mustang.

DECALS AND WEATHERING

After two coats of gloss varnish, I started applying the decals, which are made by Cartograf for this Limited Edition kit. These markings are presented with almost no carrier film along their edges and an optimal thickness. Just a few applications of Mr.Mark Softer from Mr Hobby ensured that the decals conformed perfectly to recessed panels to raised rivets. With everything sealed with a gloss coat, I started the colour-washes. Keeping in mind the photos of the real aircraft, I tried to apply colour-washes that would not create too much contrast with the camouflage colours, so I limited myself to shades that were close to the camo tones but slightly lighter or darker, almost

tone on tone. This way I could create soft but well balanced levels of contrast. The processes that entertained and engaged me the most during this project were the ones where I recreated the dirtying characteristics of the Draken's belly; a mixture of exhaust fumes, liquid leaks, grease and dirt. To do this I made use of different products using different techniques. First I started recreating, with the aid of a brush 00, the various hydraulic fluid drips and leaks. Following this, with my airbrush, I created the most extensive dirty deposits with Kcolor's Candy Burnished Brown and with the same colour I added some variation to the exhaust zone, in order to simulate the colour changes caused by the

A gloss black undercoat was applied in preparation for the metallic central belly area

heat from the engine. To achieve the dirt near the undercarriage bays, I used 'Liquid Pigment' from Lifecolor, applied via both airbrush and paint brush. By airbrushing in layers, I created a basic

Once the central belly of the Draken had been painted in a basic aluminium ‘colour’, portions were masked off for spraying with subtly differing metallic shades to create a variety of tone

patina of dirt over which I hand-painted streaks and stains. Still using Lifecolor products, I applied the rest of the dirtying-down process, focusing on the various hydraulic leaks present on the aircraft's control surfaces.

The whole tail fin was painted red, using the author’s choice of Kcolor paints from Italy

After two coats of gloss varnish, it was time to apply the decals, assisted by Mr Mark Softer

Darker colours from the Lifecolor range of washes were used to simulate a build-up of dirt and grime around the undercarriage bays (airbrushes.com)

The last stage of ageing was carried out using Lifecolor Liquid Pigments as washes this time, so as to create more variations of uniformity in the camouflage and thus obtaining very realistic effects. To do this I used the sponge method, unevenly distributing the pigment and then, with another piece of sponge soaked in water, dabbing the previously treated surface to remove selected areas of the diluted pigment, creating thin uneven discolouration.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Although now showing its age, this kit maintains the highest standards and can be assembled without too many problems. The

Up-detailed, painted and with a oil-coloured wash, the undercarriage legs look superb

photo-etched and resin upgrades included by Eduard are certainly the cherry on the cake and allow you to further amplify the detail. The colour schemes offered on the decal sheet are beautiful and really enhance the shape of the Draken. The finish of my model was created with tested techniques, but also a hint of experimentation, all going towards raising the bar on accuracy and realism. A great kit from Eduard! ●

Varying metallic tones help to make the drop tanks look a lot more interesting

To depict the original, over-painted wing numbers, the author make stencils, painted them, then lightly re-sprayed the camouflage, allowing them to just show through

AVAILABILITY; Eduard models and accessories are widely available from good model shops and online. www.creativemodels.co.uk www.eduard.com

The undersides of in-service aircraft are often more visually interesting than the upper surfaces. Here we can see the well-weathered drop tanks and fluid-stained belly and wings

KIT PREVIEW PLUS MODEL 1:35 US ROAD ROLLER ● KIT NO.467

FLAT EARTH SOCIETY Plus Model continue their plant-machinery theme with the release of a rather fabulous 1:35 road roller

P

lus Model of the Czech Republic are gradually creating a nice range of unusual and interesting vehicular hardware in 1:35 and this Hyster Road Roller is the latest. The C-350 is a commonly seen machine on road-building projects and it lends itself perfectly to model kit representation, albeit in the form of a slightly specialised resin release. Plus Model’s box-top shows a built-up model in US MERDC (Mobility Equipment Research and Development Center) camouflage and the paragraph of subject history on the front page of the instructions mentions its use in the US Army, but we couldn’t find any more information on it in military service from internet searches, so some deeper research will be needed to get the background on this. Fair

to say that as well as the standard yellow over black manufacturer’s paintwork, one could paint the machine in any contractor’s colour scheme and it can be as squeaky-clean or scraped and rusted as you like! The model comes in five bags of dark greenish-grey and clear resin plus a small sheet of photo-etched brass, some copper wire and waterslide decals. The instructions feature Plus Model’s slightly hand-drawn illustrations but they are clear enough to work with and reveal how remarkably complex this initially simple-looking machine really is! Much of the intricacy lies with the engine which is wonderfully detailed and comes with fan belts and cooling fan in photo-etched brass as well as a radiator and associated cooling pipes. The rollers are cast as solid items with very thin

and delicate rims which are all too easy to damage, so take care not to drop them on the model bench, even from a modest height. Each part is attached to a casting plug and must be trimmed off and cleaned up; a razor saw is best for this, followed by a few strokes of a sanding stick. Detail, as ever from this maker is fantastic and the multiple small parts and grouped components – particularly on the engine – come together to create some wonderful structures just ripe for creative paintwork and weathering. Once again, Plus Model have treated us to a quirky and highly original model kit subject that will be a creative challenge to paint and weather. ● AVAILABILITY; www.plusmodel.cz www.creativemodels.co.uk

Book Reviews GOT A NEW BOOK? IF YOU ARE A PUBLISHER WITH A NEW MODELLING RELATED TITLE TO PUBLICISE, WHY NOT SEND IN A COPY FOR REVIEW HERE?

WESTLAND SCOUT & WASP, WARPAINT SERIES NO.110

ADRIAN M BALCH, GUIDELINE PUBLICATIONS www.guidelinepublications.co.uk The Westland Scout helicopter (and Wasp) is a particular favourite of mine, although I don’t think I ever managed to finish the tiny Airfix 1:72 kit of it when I was a youngster as it was way too fiddly for me back then! The Scout and Wasp are handsome little things and with their power and rotor systems exposed to the elements they make great subjects for kits; shame then that as far as I’m aware, we only have the Airfix 1:72 Scout and equally long-in-the-tooth Fujimi 1:48 Wasp kits to date. This new publication in Guideline’s Warpaint Series covers both variants, the book being evenly split in coverage between them. Within the fifty-two pages we are treated to a wide range of colour and black and white photographs showing many different colour schemes, as well as some excellent profile illustrations from Richard Caruana that offer the reader an idea of colour schemes and markings; a lot of countries used these helicopters and so the range of paint schemes is colourful and extensive. Paper and print quality are top-notch and the book is rounded off perfectly with an ‘in detail’ section at the back offering walk-around views of preserved examples, ideal for the modeller. MN

TIRAN WRECKS, TIRAN 4/5/6 WRECKS IN THE IDF, PART 1

MICHAEL MASS, ADAM O’BRIEN, DESERT EAGLE PUBLISHING www.aviationbookcentre.com ISBN; 978-965-7700-05-1 In 1:35, Tamiya offer an excellent kit of the Tiran 5 – a captured and modified T-55 – and as you can read in this issue’s New Releases section, Takom have just released a stunning new model of the Tiran 4 which was derived from the T-54. The exciting thing about the Israeli Tiran series of tanks is that they got into the most incredible states of disrepair and were painted in varying shades of paint that later flaked off and made a horrible mess; perfect for weathering addicts! The authors of this new, eighty-four softback production from Desert Eagle Publishing clearly understand this too and have chosen to compile a photographic collection of the most mouthwateringly beaten up vehicles you could imagine. Some background history of the Tiran programme is provided but quickly we are off into the photos and if you’re a compulsive weatherer like me, your mind will be whirring with modelling ideas by the time page twenty comes around. The close-ups are fantastic and focus on the peeling paint, crumpled, rusty stowage boxes, corroded metal, perished rubber, sun-bleached markings and dry mud-packed tracks, all making wonderful references for these machines specifically and also for any tanks abandoned in arid lands. I highly recommend this book as a reference source for the Tiran of course, but also for the striking imagery that captures the ‘beauty’ of gently corroding AFVs. MN

Airbrush Cleaner Our fast & effective Ultimate Airbrush Cleaner is specifically formulated to work with ALL brands of acrylic modellers paint and all types of airbrush. Our cleaner is not overly aggressive and will not ruin the seals in your airbrush. We have also added a blue dye to the cleaner to be able to distinguish it from our thinner. Photo-Etch Placer Our photo-etch placer is a re-usable wax based positioning stick that will help you to hold and place even the smallest piece of photo-etch or styrene. A real helping hand when dealing with the more fiddly side of modelling.

Primer Our Ultimate Primer is a water based acrylic polyurethane self levelling surface primer. Offering a simple and easy application with excellent adhesion and durability, it dries to a hard flat finish and is simple and easy to clean up. It’s also fine to sand. There are seven colours to choose from: Grey, black, white, gloss black, olive, oxide and gelb. Ultimate Primer can be applied with a brush, airbrush and sponge for use on styrene, plastics, resin, metals, woods and various other substrates.

Weathering Wash Ultimate Weathering Wash has been formulated with several key non-toxic ingredients to bring you a superior clay based wash to add detail and realism to your model. The nine vibrant colours in our range cover the most widely used in modelling. Be aware, the wash will dry slightly lighter than the colour of the bottle and a good shake and stir is recommended before use.

Modellers Sanders Our range of specially produced Ultimate Modellers Sanders provide an excellent abrasive solution for the discerning modeller. Uniquely shaped they are provided in several grits (100/180/220/240/400/800/1200) and a buffer (3,000/12,000 grit). They are long lasting and washable, which will allow them to be used to their maximum potential with the minimum of waste. Thinny Sticks Our range of Thinny Stick Sanders have been developed specifically to help modellers get to those hard to sand areas on all genres of models. They come in six grits (180/240/400/800/1200) and a buffer (3,000/12,000 grit) and are uniquely shaped to accommodate all your fine sanding scenarios. They are made from the same high quality materials as our Modellers Sanders and are available in packs of six. Thinny Sponges Our Thinny Sponges are designed to compliment our Thinny Stick range. They come in one grit 220, but being a softer sponge it’s equivalent to nearly a 300 grit like the full size Ultimate Modellers Sanders. This will prove to be the go to sander on your bench.

DAGENHAM'S DIRT-DIGGER RETURNS! R

etro cars are cool! Yes indeed they are and the recent re-issue of Italeri's 1:24 Ford Escort RS1800 Mk.II confirms this. It's a model that began life all the way back in 1979 under the ESCI brand name, remember them? They came up with some great kits that still stand the test of time pretty well. I wonder if this rise of interest in older cars is because the new ones are somewhat dull? Or perhaps it just taps into scale modellers' powerful sense of nostalgia? Anyway, the Mk.II Escort will need some gentle fettling to bring it up to spec, but there's a very decent kit in there, once all parts have been tidied up. It's a 'project kit' for sure and won't fall together like a new Tamiya release, but the subject matter over-rides these concerns somewhat. In the meantime, there will no doubt be a heap of aftermarket decals on offer and detail sets too. I'm looking forward to seeing these kits built up and finished! See you again next time

Editor's Choice

EDUARD BRASSIN F-14A EXHAUST NOZZLES www.creativemodels.co.uk www.eduard.com Last issue I dedicated a whole page to Eduard’s ‘Big Ed’ set for Tamiya’s 1:48 F-14A because I wanted to show just how much you get in one of these productions. The Tamiya Tomcat certainly has been the focus of attention by Eduard and now we have a pair of superdetailed exhaust nozzles for it. They are resin castings and come with one open and one closed outlet, quite a common sight on this aircraft. The interior is detailed with PE parts and whilst they’ll be rather buried inside the model, it’s good to know they are there; and can be seen with a small but powerful torch!
