NEW FROM TAMIYA 1:35 US PROPELLED 155MM M40 BIG SHOT
Tamiya has announced this almost all new (only the suspension parts from the M4A3E8 'Easy Eight' Sherman are re-used) of the US Army 155mm M40 'Big Shot' self-propelled gun. Although they never fought in WWII, one example of their T83 prototype did make it to the European Theatre of Operation. The M40 served in the Korean War and was eventually replaced by the M53. Tamiya visited the US Army Field Artillery Museum in Fort Sill, Oklahoma to study a real M40 to create this kit, so it is extremely accurate. It comes with the full complement of eight crewmen; an aluminium gun barrel and brass ammo will also be released for separate purchase. • Comes with eight crew figures and two markings-options recreating Korean War 937th Field Artillery Battalion M40s • The hydraulic elevation cylinders include metal outer tubes for a realistic finish • Rear gate can be assembled up or down; individual pulley parts are included • Includes photo-etched parts to recreate engine grilles • Clear parts included for lights, plus sights on twin driver and radio operator cupolas • One-piece flexible tracks included • A range of accessories include separate shell and propellent charge depictions. • Newly moulded hull included, with wider proportions than the standard Sherman tank hull • Separately available aluminium gun barrel will be released at the same time as the M40 kit. The tip of the barrel’s inner surface features rifling detail and comes with brass parts and decals to depict ten projectiles with fuses attached. www.hobbyco.net

KIT PREVIEW TAMIYA 1:12 KAWASAKI NINJA H2R ● KIT NO.14131
Tamiya’s latest motorcycle kit takes the form of the record-breaking Kawasaki Ninja H2R and it’s another wonderful addition to the 1:12 range
KAWASAKI H2R:
THE MOST POWERFUL BIKE EVER MADE
T
he statistics for Kawasaki’s Ninja H2R mass-production track bike are staggering; the supercharged 998cc, inline four-cylinder engine produces 300bhp (the most powerful ever for a motorcycle) offering a speculated 0-60mph time of 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 249mph (400kph). So, 250mph. On a motorbike. It must feel like being fired out of a cannon. The H2R uses a space-frame structure made from steel tubing and carbon-fibre cowling which is a pretty minimal affair. There’s no lower bodywork at all, the engine being largely left open for help with cooling. The bike comes without mirrors and indicators and the tyres are slicks as standard, so it’s strictly a closed-circuit only machine only.
NINJA IN 1:12 MODEL-FORM
Tamiya’s 1:12 rendition of this bike replicates the open-framework structure in two halves, moulded in metallic grey polystyrene. The main engine parts come on this sprue as well and they are beautifully rendered, with a two-part supercharger and plenum chamber all accurately depicted. Modellers might be glad to know that the two frame halves are assembled before the engine is
6
mounted, so the cemented line at the front of the frame where the front forks mount can be cleaned up before painting and without the engine blocking access. Decals for the engine, frame and instrument panel are provided and whilst only small, they add up to create an air of realism, as do the numerous lengths of vinyl tubing provided for the cables and plumbing. Two gauges of tube are provided but really fastidious modellers might want to use aftermarket tubing of thinner diameters for enhanced authenticity. Drilling out the many cooling holes in the brake discs will also impart a realistic look to these mouldings. We’ve said this before, but we think Tamiya’s 1:12 bike kits are some of the best models the company makes; they have a special touch with the subject and they just look so good when built and painted with care. The H2R can proudly sit alongside the other Kawasakis, Hondas and Yamahas in the range, comfortable in the knowledge that the real thing is the most powerful motorcycle ever made. And that’s quite an achievement.

LOWRIDER LANG PART TWO;
SUSPENSION AND GEARBOXES
T
his time, we tackle the Jagdpanzer IV’s suspension/ running gear, gearbox installation and begin work on the hull interior’s electronic systems. When examined close up and prior to installation, the suspension is a reasonably scale-like depiction of the real thing; when the bogies are in place on the hull and mostly concealed behind the roadwheels, it looks excellent and works realistically too. Things to watch out for in these stages are the suspension bogie components; there are four units each side and they are ‘handed’, so make sure you are using left-hand parts for the left-side bogies and vice-versa. At first they are easily mixed up but once you become familiar with the make-up of each sub-assembly they go together with ease. Ensure you use the threadlock where indicated in the instructions, because some areas are hard to reach once other parts are fitted around them and tightening screws at a later stage can be difficult or impossible. Take time to make dry-runs of sub-assemblies to familiarise yourself with the parts before applying the threadlock as it will make screws quite difficult to unscrew, as it is supposed to! Wipe away any excess threadlock with a Q-Tip dipped in lighter fluid or white spirit. Work is continuing on this model as this was being written and we’ll bring you the next update in the December issue of TMMI! ●
10
ASSEMBLING THE SUSPENSION
The Panzer IV suspension bogies follow the mechanical layout of the real things, but obviously in a somewhat simplified form. Note that the single leaf spring has already been fitted here, secured with a grub-screw
A small steel collar must be placed over the spring support pin on the rear-facing swing arm to act as a loose bearing that will reduce wear on the aluminium casting
The forward-facing arm is being lowered into place here, ensuring the tip of the leaf spring sits in the correct position above its support pin on the rear-facing arm
The backplates are then positioned and tweezers are recommended here. Note the orientation of the two plates, neither of which are symmetrical

The Editor continues work on Tamiya’s new 1:16 radio-control Jagdpanzer IV /70(v) Lang
The loosely assembled bogie is then lifted onto the axles of a pair of roadwheels; you can build the bogies directly onto the wheels but we've shown it separately for clarity. The wheels are secured with screws whose tips were dipped in threadlock, included with the kit
Tamiya’s neat little crosshead screwdriver is perfect for this operation but of course you can use any appropriate screwdriver
The finished bogie; only seven more to build! Note that the tyres have been left off and the wheels sprayed black; this was to ensure all areas were primed. The tyres will be slipped onto the rims later on
Here we see all eight of the Pz.IV-pattern suspension bogies, almost ready to mount to the hull. It's clear from this view that the units are 'handed' for the left and right hull sides
The backing plates proved to be a fiddle to sandwich between the hull and bogie when mounting, so they were tacked on with superglue (cyanoacrylate) to prevent them from dropping out during the procedure

With their backing plates superglued in place, each bogie was then ready to be mounted to the hull side. A single 2.6mm x 6mm hex-head screw and washer holds each unit in place from within the hull and using the kit-supplied allen key, it's a slightly awkward operation. If you have a ball-ended allen key, the job will be much easier.
All bogie units have now been firmly fixed to the hull and their smooth operation tested. Don't press down on the hull too hard though, or the leaf spring ends can pop out of the rear-facing arms. If this happens, they can be easily re-engaged with the use of pliers
INSTALLING THE GEARBOXES
The model is propelled forward, reverse and steered by a pair of RS380-type electric motors, each running through its own gearbox. The units come pre-assembled which greatly eases construction and reduces the potential for error; one part in the wrong place within a gearbox and the model is going nowhere!
12
The left gearbox is fitted first; you won't be able to get it in if the right 'box is already in place. The output shaft for the drive sprocket is guided through the aperture in the hull side and the gearbox then lowered onto its sturdy steel mounting pegs, previously superglued to the hull floor
November 2016 TMMI 253
p 10-16 RCJagdpanzerIV 253MN.indd 12
03/10/2016 17:00
The ‘boxes are then secured to the hull floor using three, 3x10mm machine screws. Tamiya's threadlock was used again to ensure these vital screws won't loosen through vibration. This material is sticky and sets firm once the screw has been tightened
Here we see both gearboxes in place and we can see why the left-side ‘box had to be fitted first; the higher motor mounting of the right ‘box is staggered so both can fit within the narrow Pz.IV hull
FITTING THE DRIVE-SPROCKETS AND TRACKS
The drive sprockets in this kit are necessarily cast from aluminium for strength and durability. They come in two halves which interlock without the need of glue, although the ambitious modeller might want to glue and fill the gaps to represent welding seams. Note the filled screw-hole and replacement resin bolt-heads on the final drive casing

With the sprocket firmly screwed in place via a large machine screw and spring-washer, the armoured 'hubcap' is fixed in place. We used rubber cement for this, instead of superglue just in case the cap needs to be removed to tighten the sprocket screw at a later date
The kit’s tracks links are moulded in a tough, slightly flexible plastic and come pre-assembled as standard. They are held together with metal track pins and to join the track, a pin is pulled out almost as far as it will go
With the track ends engaged, the pin is then re-inserted, taking care that it travels through the whole width of the link until its narrow end appears on the outer edge
The instructions recommend removing five links from each pre-assembled run, which we tried. It seemed a little tight, so just four were removed for the photos here, which created a realistic degree of track-sag (to our eyes). This might need to be adjusted when running the model though. The track's plastic does not take paint well, so weathering pigments and washes will be used to give them a more convincing finish

INSTALLING THE ELECTRONICS
Perhaps the most fun thing about Tamiya's 1:16 'full-option' RC tank kits is their sound-effects package. The Jagdpanzer comes with this function too and is able to reproduce digitally sampled engine noises, plus main gun and machine gun firing sounds. To give the effects some volume, a decent sized speaker is required and here we see it being installed within the rear hull where the real vehicle's engine would live. The speaker is a reflex design with a front-facing port to project the noises as efficiently as possible
The multi-function unit (MF-05) is next to be fitted and it is simply secured to the hull floor with a piece of double-sided foam tape. This box of tricks contains the electronics that create the sounds and flashing lights etc.
The digital control unit (DMD) then sits on top of the multi-function box. This item is responsible for controlling the model’s driving functions and it is to this that the motors and battery are connected. Again, double-sided foam tape is used to hold it in place

These are the four connectors that transmit electrical power to the RS380 motors. Each needs a positive push to make a good connection to the motor wire connectors
The wiring up of the motors to the DMD unit is colour-coded and explained clearly in the instructions; the left side motor’s yellow wire connects to the blue lead and its green wire connects to the orange lead. The right-side motor’s yellow wire connects to the purple lead and its green wire connects to the white lead
The wiring looks like an exploding plate of spaghetti at the moment, but once the upper hull's electric servo motors and gun-flash leads have been plugged in, it will all be tidied away with cable ties. More on that next time!
MORE ON THE BIG JAGDPANZER IV SOON!
Next time, we will work on the upper hull and its internal servos that control the main gun’s movements. See you again in a month!

MODEL REFERENCES AIRSPEED HORSA
SILENT APPROACH Fancy building Bronco's fantastic 1:35 Airspeed Horsa kit? Here are some reference images to help with your project
T
he Airspeed AS.51 Horsa was a World War II British troop-carrying glider built by Airspeed Limited (and subcontractors) and used for air assault by British and Allied armed forces. It was named after 'Horsa', the legendary 5th Century Anglo-Saxon warrior. The German military was a pioneer in the use of airborne operations, conducting several successful operations during the Battle of France in 1940, including the use of glider-borne troops in the Battle of Fort Eben-Emael. Impressed by the success of German airborne operations, the Allied governments decided to form their own airborne formations.
This decision would eventually lead to the creation of two British airborne divisions, as well as a number of smaller units. The British airborne establishment began development on 22nd June 1940, when the Prime Minister Winston Churchill directed the War Office in a memorandum to investigate the possibility of creating a corps of 5,000 parachute troops. When the equipment for the airborne forces was under development, it was decided by War Office officials that gliders would be an integral component of such a force; these would be used to transport troops and heavy equipment. The first glider to be designed

and produced was the General Aircraft Hotspur, the first prototype of which flew on 5th November 1940. However, several problems were found with the Hotspur's design, the primary one being that the glider did not carry sufficient troops. Tactically it was believed that airborne troops should be landed in groups far
The Horsa was virtually a throw-away aircraft and the appearance of the cockpit testifies to this

larger than the eight the Hotspur could transport, and also the number of aircraft required to tow the gliders needed to carry larger groups would be impractical. There were also concerns that the gliders would have to be towed in tandem if used operationally, which would be extremely difficult during night-time and through cloud formations.

V So it was decided to use
the Hotspur as a training glider and continue with the development of several other types of glider, including a twenty-five seat assault glider which became the Airspeed Horsa. The Horsa, given the designation of AS.51, was produced to meet Specification X.26/40 issued on 12 October 1940. Initially it was planned that the Horsa would be used to transport paratroopers who would jump from doors installed on either side of the fuselage and that the actual landing would be a secondary role; however the idea was soon dropped and it was decided to simply have the glider land airborne troops. An initial order was placed for 400 of the gliders in February 1941 and it was estimated that Airspeed should be able to complete the order by July 1942. Enquiries were made into the possibility of a further 400 being produced in India for use by Indian airborne forces, but this was abandoned when it was discovered the required wood would have to be imported into India at a prohibitive cost. Five prototypes were ordered, with Fairey Aircraft producing the first two prototypes for flight testing while Airspeed completed the remaining prototypes to be used in equipment and loading tests. The first prototype (DG597) towed by an Armstrong Whitworth Whitley took flight on 12th September 1941 with George Errington at the controls, eleven months after the specification had been issued. Production of the Horsa commenced in early 1942, and by May some 2,345 had been ordered by the Army for use in future airborne operations. The glider was designed from the outset to be built in components with a series of thirty sub-assemblies required to complete the manufacturing process. Manufacturing was intended primarily to use woodcrafting facilities not needed for more urgent aviation production, and as a result production was spread across separate factories, which consequently limited the likely loss in case of

OPERATION DEADSTICK
Operation Deadstick was the codename for an operation by airborne forces of the British Army that took place on 6 June 1944 as part of the Normandy landings of World War II. The objective was to capture intact two road bridges in Normandy across the River Orne and the Caen Canal providing the only exit eastwards, for British forces from their landing on Sword Beach. Responsibility for the operation fell to the men of D Company, 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, part of the 6th Airlanding Brigade of the 6th Airborne Division. The assault group comprised a reinforced company of six infantry platoons and an attached platoon of Royal Engineers. They flew from the south of England to Normandy in six Airspeed Horsa gliders. Through what was later described as the "most outstanding flying achievements of the war", the gliders delivered the company to their objective. After a brief exchange of fire, both bridges were captured and then defended against tank, gunboat and infantry counter-attacks, until the company relief arrived. â—? Source; edited from Wikipedia

he Supermarine Spitfire was a single-engine low-wing, produced by the British firm Supermarine in the thirties and forties. Used in Europe, North Africa, Australia and Asia, became one of the symbolic planes of WWII mainly for its effective and decisive contribution to the victorious British resistance to German aggression, during the Battle of Britain and the years of the conflict. In the Battle of Britain, shared with Hawker Hurricane the difficult task of defending the territory from Luftwaffe attacks.
Note the subtly shaded and varied tones created by the author in the Dark Earth finish
THE KIT; CONSTRUCTION AND PAINTING
This mould is totally all new, with no parts in common with the old release from 2007, but there are some components in common with the new Mk.V, released recently. The cockpit interior is well detailed and does not need many improvements. I only used some of the Eduard sheet released for the old but evergreen Tamiya kit where I only needed the instrument panel and seat belts. The fit of the various parts of the cockpit is very good and no puttying was required. The front part of the cockpit
was painted with Tamiya Cockpit Green (XF-71). The higher points of detail were lightened with the same colour slightly brightened with the flat white. The instrument panel is in semi-gloss black. To paint the compressed air cylinders I used Alclad II 'White Aluminium' (ALC 106) and for the oxygen tank I used Tamiya Flat Black (XF-1). The closure of the two parts of the fuselage was straightforward and the same can be said for the fuselage to wing joint. I replaced the two-bladed propeller with a far superior resin item from
The Dark Green has now been applied and as with the Dark Earth, shading has been applied over it to create a more realistic look

V Ultracast of Canada, which
is correct in form and size. It was painted in black, with tips in Gunze yellow (H-4). I also used Ultracast resin parts to replace the engine exhaust and open access door. The most disappointing parts of the kit are the main undercarriage legs; the join between the legs and the retraction part is a simple but fit with no positive locating points, so reinforcement will be helpful here. The legs were painted with Alclad II Natural Metal (ALC-106). The transparent parts are fine and their fit is perfect. For my representation of this historic and charming aircraft, I chose a pre-war specimen based at Duxford, UK in 1938. To paint the top surfaces, I applied the classic Spitfire Mk.I two-tone camouflage using Gunze Dark Green (H-73) and Gunze Dark Earth (H-72). Instead of using the decals, I chose to mask and paint the national insignia on the wings and to do this I used Tamiya Royal Blue (X-3) and Gunze Gloss Red (H-327) with just a little bit of Gunze Gloss added. The lower surfaces were painted
The result is a perfectly flush finish with no decal carrier film or wrinkles in sight
With the masking applied to perfectly centre the inner circle, the red was then airbrushed on
with Gunze Black (H-2) and for Gunze White (H-1). For oil leaks, I used various shades of artist's oil paint such as Vandyke brown and natural earth shades. The model was finished with a Vallejo flat clear.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion I would say that I really enjoyed myself in representing this plane that I love so much. The kit is well done and highly recommended, it just needs some improvements but with a few aftermarket available this can be easily done! ●

KIT PREVIEW EDUARD 1:72 SPITFIRE MK.IXC LATE VERSION PROFIPACK ● KIT NO.70121

Eduard’s 1:48 Spitfire Mk.IXc and subsequent variants were released to much acclaim a few years back and the kit is widely recognised to be the best of its type in that scale
Q
uite sensibly, Eduard have now utilised their impeccable data on this aircraft to create this completely new model in 1:72, still a very popular scale with an enthusiastic worldwide following, TMMI included! The new kit uses many of the design ideas of its 1:48 cousin and it barely compromises on the detail either; the cockpit is an example of this and must rate as the most intricate box-standard interior of any 1:72 Spitfire yet released. The seat builds up from three parts and in this initial ProfiPACK edition, comes with a choice of injectionmoulded or photo-etched armour plates. Likewise the ProfiPACK PE sheet includes pre-coloured seat harnesses parts. The forward cockpit bulkhead is offered in two forms; with and without a moulded-in instrument
panel, the latter being found on the PE sheet in three, pre-coloured layers for a truly realistic appearance. The cockpit walls are moulded individually for superior detail and no less than three forms of pilot door are provided; open and closed (with canopy in the open position) and closed for canopy open. It must be noted that separate clear parts are included for these different positions, plus a bubble hood for a future Mk.XVI, we’d imagine. A choice of regular and tall rudders is offered and the ailerons are moulded individually, although the elevators are moulded in with the horizontal stabilisers, in the neutral position. The radiators are build-up structures and can be modelled with their flaps lowered if desired. The model comes with bombs and a drop tank, plus a choice of underbelly
slipper tanks. Six decal options are provided for RAF machines. This is a very welcome kit indeed and puts pretty much every other 1:72 Spitfire kit into the ‘runners-up’ category. The kit costs around the £15 mark which is quite high for a 1:72 fighter kit, but the box’s contents more than justify this price point; it’s a gem. ● MN MODEL SPEC EDUARD 1:72 SPITFIRE MK.IXC LATE VERSION PROFIPACK KIT NO.70121 www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:72 MATERIALS; . . . . . . . . . . . a minimum of effort, you can create a stunning model of this classic fighter. Minimum effort - isn’t that a rather odd thing to say? I use that phrase intentionally because let’s make it clear from the off: this is a kit that anyone could build and not just those with skills in-keeping with its cost. Tamiya always
create kits that are easy to build, but in this case, that seems to have been pushed to heights I have certainly not seen before in a kit. Though a very complex design, the team at Tamiya has broken the Tomcat’s shop down into such easy to construct sections, you can’t help but smile as you are putting the pieces together. Not only
The fit around this kit is the best we have ever seen; just look at the separate panel around the lower nose and gun port: can you see the joint?

are there seemingly as few parts as necessary to get the job done, the individual pieces fit with such precision, the kit can easily be built in sub-assemblies that you can complete and the bring together seamlessly once done. It’s an astonishing feat and one that simply adds too the pleasure that you experience from this project.
Design aside, detail is also first-rate; panel lines, rivets and other surface feature are replicated with a deft touch. Internally, the cockpit and wheel bays are complex and playing, multipart seats and undercarriage legs adding a laying of complexity that is both fun to assemble and paint. The seats are a highlight for sure but I would have

like some effort to have been made to either replicate in plastic the straps, or offered them in photo-etch. The decal sheet offers the straps – as can be seen in this feature – but they are far from ideal, homemade alternatives or a raid on the aftermarket being wise alternative route.
Clever design and the use of large locating pages ensures that the nosewheel bay is a secure, strong fit

THOSE WINGS...
The wing set-up of this kit is perhaps the one area that has caused the most debate amongst modellers. Tamiya has created a model that offers only two options: wings forward or wings swept, both with flaps and slats retracted. There are no options to have flaps and slats dropped. Why? Well, because that the way most Tomcats look when they are on the ground! The only time – other than during maintenance – that the flaps and slats are dropped is when the aircraft is strapped to a catapult or on final approach. Other than those instances, they are retracted and the wings swept back. Add to that the fact that they also only offer subsonic intake ramps (unlike their 1:32 kit that offered subsonic, transonic and supersonic options…) and you can see that they were very specific in how they wanted to see the model completed. Should you wish to replicate either of the wing positions, the kit includes separate sealing parts that are appropriate – and carefully marked on their undersides – to allow this to be accurately done. The parts incidentally, simply snap into position so you can swap the positions at will. Along with the parts needed to build a vanilla Tomcat, you will also find the necessary weapons and decals to build a fully-loaded aircraft in the marking of VF-2 Bounty Hunters (as seen in this feature), VF-84 Jolly Rogers, or the Iranian Air Force. Weapons include AIM-54 Phoenix, AIM-7 Sparrow and AIM-9 Sidewinders, as well as under-fuselage drop-tanks. So this then is Tamiya’s 1:48 F-14A Tomcat - we hope that you like it!
Work begins on the wing sweep mechanism
As you can see, the sweep mechanism is separate from the wings, a very clever idea

There are a number of small changes that need to be made to the panel layout in this kit, this area needing to be filled to create the Alpha model depicted in the kit
The upper and lower fuselage section have been joined. The upper panel is actually split in two, the fit once again being flawless
The wings simply slip into place…
All yellow areas were undercoated with white and then sprayed with Tamiya X-8 Lemon Yellow
It’s amazing that so few parts can create something that looks this complex! The intakes are moulded in one-piece sections, each being completed with the addition of aft tunnels. The effect is close to a seamless intake. The highlighted pips are the mounts for the external fuel tanks
…the fit once again being exceptional!
Though little of the interior of the nose can be seen, it was given a quick coat of flat black to cover the areas that would be seen with the tub and walls in place
Once in place, the wings sweep back and forth perfectly. Once you’ve played with them, they can be removed ready to be painted, decalled and weathered.
The jet pipes are superb and look great painted following the kit’s detailed instructions. Gunze Sangyo Mr Hobby and Super Metallics were used to paint these items
As very little can be seen inside the jet pipes, they were simply painted in base colours: flat white and then shades of metal
The cockpit parts, painted and weathered
Keeping the sidewalls on their runner helps to hold everything whilst painting and weathering takes place

The tub was painted with Gunze Mr Hobby Neutral Gray and then weathered with carefully applied washes of raw umber oil paint
In order to create a neater finish, the black side consoles were masked and airbrushed with Tamiya Flat Black. Lightened shades of grey drybrushed on to the panels, brought out the features before final painting
All internal bays were airbrushed with Tamiya Flat White and then weathered with thin layers of Raw Umber mixed with a couple of drops of dark grey
Before fixing the cockpit into place the outer surfaces were airbrushed with a layer of Mr Hobby Light Gull Gray, thinned with Mr Color Thinner
Test-fitting the nose to the rear fuselage. This is without glue: astonishing!
The cockpit is in place and the nose halves joined. Thanks to clever design, the cockpit does not need to be glued into place, large peg and socket joints all holding it where it needs to be

All of the jet pipe parts have been carefully joined ready to be fixed in place during final assembly
And here are the sprung fuselage panels that sit against the wings. Again, two sets are supplied for the two wing positions offered in the kit. Here, they have been base-coated in Mr Hobby Light Gull Gray, as have the doors for the dropped boarding ladder
Here is one of the jet pipes pressed into place without glue. Neat, huh?
The wings were first painted with Mr Hobby USN White, masked and then in Light Gull Gray. The masking though looking complex is actually rather easy, if not a little boring!
Two different pieces are supplied for the seals behind the wings - one for forward and the other for swept positions. Needing to show both positions, both items were airbrushed in a base-coat of Tamiya Ocean Grey
With the grey and white dry (at least three days drying time), the leading edges were masked and then airbrushed with Tamiya AS-12 Bare Metal Silver.
Test-fitting the nose once painted. Time to remove it ready for decalling
As you can see here, the soft-edged, wavy demarcation was masked with sausages of Blue-tack and Tamiya masking tape Though counter intuitive, the rear fuselage and intakes were first sprayed with Light Gull Grey, masked and then airbrushed with white, the masking being far easier this way around
I couldn’t resist bringing everything together to see how it looked!
The high-gloss finish possible from the use of Gunze’s paints can be seen in this shot

The intakes have been painted, decalled and weathered. Weathering was kept relatively light on this model, subtle washes helping to bring out the delicate panel line detail
The completed wings. Raw Umber and Paynes Grey oil paint washes helped to define the panel lines and bring out the features around the slats and flaps
03/10/2016 17:11
Those wing seals seen earlier have been weathered with lightly applied layers of Tamiya Red Brown and Flat Black thinned around 80% with X-20A Thinners
The remaining cockpit parts have been painted. Being a strictly out of the box review, even the seat harness decals were used!
Although decalling began with the wings, the nose was the area that really showed how well they worked on the model. As with the plastic parts, the fit of the decals around areas such as the open steps, was simply superb!
The rear fuselage, completely painted and decalled. The rudders were painted with Tamiya Flat Blue and the oversprayed with several thin layers of X-3 Royal Blue
In order to get the decals to settle down properly, Gunze Sangyo Mr Mark Softer and Setter were used to great effect. Using this system, the decals settle down as well as any other high-end products
Washes over the underside white camouflage has helped to bring out the panel line detail. Note the multicoloured fins. These were painted in blue and yellow and then finished with stars from the spares’ box, the kit offering complete blue flashes on the decal sheet that I chose not to use
Here’s a close-up of those fins; painting the blue on The undercarriage legs are superbly detailed and has created a neater finish I think… look great once assembled, painted and weathered. Tamiya white was use for the main colour in this area, Vallejo German Grey darkened with black being used for the tyres. Note the red edges on all of the undercarriage doors
The jet pipes are in place, anchored with carefully applied blobs of superglue. In this shot I’ve made a mistake, the metal panel on the beaver tail being in the wrong place ( subsequently repainted). That’s what happens when you are not concentrating!

The shoulder pylons with their AIM-7E and AIM-9H sidewinders was fun to build and paint

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC
www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk www.hannants.co.uk Eduard now have five dedicated photo-etched sets for Trumpeter's 1:350 USS Kitty Hawk CV-63, with parts for the island structure, hull and carrier deck, railings, air-wing and lifeboats, enabling the modeller to really go to town on this big kit. Revell's Halifax B Mk.III also comes in for attention with PE sets for the bomb bays, interior and exterior. Tamiya's Su-76M gets some very useful parts, including the mesh engine grilles, log saw blade and other internal and external sheet-metal components. As always, Eduard's sets are precision-made and come with clear instructions. MAGIC MODELS, RUSSIA
www.magicmodels.ru This is a new manufacturer to TMMI and they have hit the ground running with some very nicely made accessories for Takom's recently issued 1:35 ZSU-52-7. The twin 57mm S-68 gun barrels (MM3543, above) are finely lathed from brass and most importantly, feature drilled-through 'pepper-pot' muzzle brakes. The barrels come with individually machine caps for the brakes plus photo-etched details. Also new from Magic Models for the ZSU-57-2 is a set of sixteen 57mm BR-281U AP rounds in machined brass, sixteen 57mm OR-281U High Explosive Tracer rounds and a set of eight empty shell casings for the same kit. Magic Models have also created a set of four barrels for Meng's ZSU-25-4 Shilka AA system, each beautifully made from brass in three sections. 1:35 X16 57MM OR-281U HIGH EXPLOSIVE TRACED AMMUNITION, SPAAG ZSU-57-2 S-60 (MM35300) X16 57MM BR-281U ARMOUR-PIERCING (AP) TRACED AMMUNITION, SPAAG ZSU-57-2 S-60 (MM35301) X8 57MM EMPTY SHELL CASINGS, SPAAG ZSU-57-2 S-60 (MM35302) X4 25MM BARRELS 2A7 SPAAG ZSU-23-4 SHILKA (MM3515) MM35301

KIT PREVIEW TAMIYA 1:24 HONDA NSX ● KIT NO.24344
Tamiya’s 1:24 kit of Honda’s new NSX supercar is here
HONDA RIGHT TRACK: NSX ARRIVES T he new £130,000 Honda NSX is a hybrid machine, equipped with a 3.5 litre twin-turbo V6, outputting 500bhp and 406lb-ft of torque between 2,000 and 6,000rpm. A direct-drive electric motor between the engine and the newly designed, nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox creates an additional 47bhp. There is also a twin electric-motor unit on the front axle generating 36bhp. The total outputs are 573bhp and 476lb-ft, offering claimed performance of 0-60mph in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 191mph, impressive figures for a car weighing in at a chubby 1,725kg. A staggeringly powerful vehicle then, and one that simply had to be re-created in 1:24 by Tamiya. The kit is a fully detailed production with extensive engine and gearbox parts, suspension, front axle electric motors and plus cabin interior, so allow a little extra bench-time for this one. The design of the Honda’s engine bay means that the upper surfaces of the powerplant will be almost completely hidden when the inner engine hood (part No.F13) is in
place, with just some intake pipework remaining on show. The best way to see the engine on the finished model will be from below. The kit comes with the option of a left or righthand drive cabin, which means you’ll find two whole dashboard assemblies in the box, plus windscreen wipers and their base. Diagrams in the instructions showing how to position the foot-pedals for either left or righthand drive. The cabin builds into a tub that drops onto the chassis in Step 10. A big plus point with this kit is a fairly simple one; it comes with its body mouldings in plain white polystyrene. You may answer “so what” to that, but it means that you can easily paint your model white or other light colours; if it were moulded in red, the powerful dye tends to bleed up through layers of lacquer thinners and paint over time. Another future classic enters Tamiya’s 1:24 Scale Sports Car Series and justifiably so. Extensive detail inside and out, an accurate profile and precision engineered in a way only Tamiya know how.

REVELL, USA
‘57 FORD GASSER 2 ‘N 1 www.revell.com SCALE; 1:25 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS KIT NUMBER; 4396 The 1957 Ford was an unusual car in that it had an ‘estate’ type of body but with just two passenger doors. Revell’s kit captures the profile very well and comes with a detailed engine, naturally. This release is marketed as a ‘2 ‘n 1’ kit with the option to build either the standard car (which is our favourite) or the ‘Gasser’, a racing class of the ‘50s and ‘60s with mag wheels, jacked-up suspension and very retro decals. The body sports some lovely detail on its flanks and the drivetrain is well done too, with individual shock absorbers and trailing-arm links. MN
REVELL, EUROPE
KENWORTH AERODYNE www.revell.de/en SCALE; 1:32 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; 07671 The sprues are marked ‘Monogram Models Inc 1981’ and the age of the model can be seen in the simplicity of certain parts, but the cabin shell is very nicely detailed and the kit is full of character. The chassis is a one-piece affair with a moulded-in sump/ gearbox but when viewed from above it looks pretty good. The cabin interior is all in one piece (plus gear lever and steering wheel) but with some imaginative painting and skilful masking, it will look fine. The wheels and tyres are moulded together in kit plastic and the tread detail suffers because of this, but if sanded down to represent worn tyres, they can look good. MN

CESSNA 172 SKYHAWK 1987 LANDING ON RED SQUARE www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO;2764 Who’d have thought a plain old Cessna 172 could look so interesting? Italeri have made use of oldish kit parts here, but the addition of three interesting markingsoptions lends some history and character to this light aircraft. In 1987, Mathias Rust famously landed his Cessna in Moscow’s Red Square and the kit comes with civilian decals for this version, along with an Irish Air Corps (1972) scheme in overall matt green and a camouflaged aircraft of the Croatian Air Force from the battle of Vukovar, 1991; an appealing variety. The kit itself features somewhat prominent rivets and panel lines but this will look a little less apparent under a layer of paint. MN

C-141B STARLIFTER www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE; 1:144 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; 325 This is a new-tool kit for 2016 of the mighty C-141B Starlifter from Roden and it looks good in its (over-large) box. The airframe sports very fine recessed panel lines that, while still overscale for 1:144, are perfectly within acceptable limits; a completely smooth surface would look odd anyway. The cabin is a ‘sealed unit’ without detail which is fine really, as little would be visible through the small cabin windows; just paint this area matt black. Construction is otherwise very straightforward and the enthusiastic builder could have an airframe ready to paint in front of them within a few hours. Once the Gunship Grey is on, you have just the one decal option for a USAF aircraft of the 452nd Air Mobility Wing, March AFB, California in the mid-’90s. MN

Subtle detail, great subject choice, looks quick to build

FLYHAWK PRECISION MODEL, CHINA
HMS HERMES 1942 www.flyhawkmodel.com SCALE; 1:700 MATERIALS; IM, WS, PE KIT NUMBER; FH1122 The latest ship kit to emerge from the model kit ‘black magic factory of miracles’ that is Flyhawk depicts HMS Hermes, the WW2 aircraft carrier as she appeared in 1942. Construction actually began during WW1 and she was the first vessel to be designed as an aircraft carrier. She met her fate on the 9th of April 1942 at the hands of Japanese aircraft, when she was sunk of the coast of Sri Lanka, then called Ceylon. Flyhawk have used their wizardry again for this release, producing some of the finest injectionmoulded parts we’ve seen, along with some equally delicate photo-etched brass parts for the railings, crane and even the struts and rigging for the carrier’s complement of Fairy Swordfish aircraft. An extraordinary kit with some staggeringly fine detail. MN
PLATZ, JAPAN
US NAVY UCAS X-47B ‘GO NAVY’ ARMY-NAVY GAME www.platz-hobby.com SCALE; 1:72 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO; EMSF-1 010 The US Navy’s experimental X-47B UCAS (Unmanned Air Combat System) drone is a fascinating aircraft and if one searches online for pictures, its apparently dull overall grey is starting to acquire an interestingly patchy finish. Platz’s new kit is in 1:72 and that’s just the right size for this surprisingly large machine, which is similar in bulk to an F/A-18C Hornet. The airframe detail is very refined and subtle and just enough to take an appropriately light colour wash. The twin bomb-bays can be configured in the open position and a pair of GBU32s are included to fill them. The undercarriage legs are well moulded, the main legs featuring separate hubs/brakes. The wing-mounted air brakes can be fitted open or closed and the wings themselves can be mounted extended or retracted. MN
Exquisitely fine moulded detail and a superb replica of Hermes as she appeared in 1942
Appealingly sinister subject with great detail and some nice positionable options

FINE MOLDS, JAPAN
MITSUBISHI A5M2B CLAUDE www.finemolds.co.jp SCALE; 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, PC, WS KIT NUMBER; FB20 The Claude was a carrier-based Japanese Navy fighter that was designed in the 1930s, with some serving into WW2 when the USA entered the conflict and even up to the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942. Fine Molds kits are always refined productions and this new-tool model of the Claude is absolutely delightful. The model reviewed here is the closedcanopy version; the open-canopy variant has also been released. The model comes with an excellent cockpit that includes individual sidewall frames, ammunition hopper, forward and rear bulkheads and a suspended seat on individual bracket arms. The engine is well appointed too, with an individually moulded pushrod disc, intake tubing and exhausts. Fit of parts (yes, I have started the build!), is extremely precise and external detail is appropriately restrained. A fantastic kit. MN
FINE MOLDS, JAPAN
JGSDF TYPE 61 TANK UP-GRADED www.finemolds.co.jp SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; FM45 Fine Molds’ Type 61 is a relatively recent release (2014) and is an outstanding kit of this rather handsome tank that served Japan’s Ground Self Defence Force during the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s ,‘90s and just into the 2000s. It’s a highly detailed model with a comprehensive parts-breakdown and is moulded with a delicacy and attention to detail that this manufacturer is well known for. Evidence of this can be seen in the beautifully rendered, in-scale welding seams that run along the top edges of the upper hull’s side plates and the subtle cast-steel texture on the turret. This is a re-launched kit with a revised sprue layout in some areas and a newly sculpted mantlet cover. New markings also feature and will be found in the polybag along with photo-etched exhaust shrouds and clear parts for the vision blocks and headlight glass. MN
A very attractive subject. The kit is finely detailed and the fit of parts is precise and easy

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC ITALERI, ITALY
WELLINGTON MK.IC www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:72 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO;1383 This kit of Sir Barnes Wallis’s iconic Wellington has quite a release history behind it; it was originally tooled up by MPM in 2002 who offered at least four boxings, Airfix and Revell have offered a release each and this is Italeri’s second issuing. This says something for the quality of the model in that so many makers have wanted to utilise its plastic parts and from a look at the sprues, the detail is very good indeed. The geodesic structure of the airframe is subtly visible on the wings and the stringers can be seen on the fuselage. The cockpit interior is adequate for this scale but there’s nothing to see through the main side fenestration. The engines come as central crank cases to which the cylinders are fixed, but they are barely visible through the cowling openings. Six markingsoptions are provided, including Coastal Command No.304 Polish Squadron and an RAF version in Dark Earth/Middle Stone over black, based in Egypt, 1940. MN
HARRIER GR.7/9 www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE; 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, PE, PCM, WS KIT NUMBER; 82112 In this limited edition release from Eduard, we have Hasegawa’s generally excellent 1:48 Harrier GR.7/9 injectionmoulded parts, coupled with Eduard’s superb resin ejector seat (vastly superior to the kit seat), weighted tyres, two photo-etched frets, pre-cut canopy masks and a new decal sheet carrying six schemes. The plastic parts are in the familiar Hasegawa style; grey polystyrene, refined airframe surfaces consisting of recessed panel lines and delicately formed detail parts. The Harrier’s characteristically bulbous canopy is well depicted in two halves and each just requires the sanding/polishing off of a fine mould part-line. As mentioned, the kit-standard bang-seat is rather poor and this is more than rectified by the exquisite item from Eduard’s Brassin line. A very welcome release with some very worthwhile goodies thrown in. MN

KIT PREVIEW TAKOM 1:35 KING TIGER HENSCHEL TURRET W/ZIMMERIT ● KIT NO.2047
BRAND NEW
TAKOM'S TERR T
he Tiger II is one of those subjects that just never gets boring, to us at TMMI at least. Tamiya's 1:35 models are a few years old now but still build into very good replicas (see Seven Frisch's brilliant King Tiger in TMMI Issue 250) and we have other kits in circulation from Dragon and soon, Meng. Takom are the first in this current race with their all-new model of the 'Henschel turret' seriesproduction machine. From the presence of a Porsche-turret mantlet (part No.8) on sprue F, it would seem that this version will follow. The kit comes in a deep box to make space for the significant number of extra sprues for the very complete interior. This includes the engine and its bay, hull floor, internal suspension bars, full fighting compartment with ammunition in racks, driver's station, gearbox, radio and, of course, a complete turret interior with basket and a detailed replica of the 8.8cm main gun.
ENGINE DECK AND PE
The engine deck features individually moulded access panels to allow the Maybach power-plant and its cooling systems to be seen if desired. Photo-etched mesh screens are included and they exhibit a three-dimensional effect on their upper surfaces which gives the impression of a woven pattern. Other items in PE brass include end-caps for the 8.8cm ammunition rounds plus some other sheet-metal components, but the photo-etched contribution to this kit is surprisingly limited, which will come as a relief to many modellers.
52
Takom have chosen instead to replicate most of the model in polystyrene and in my opinion, it's all the better for it. I have nothing against PE brass of course and it's invaluable for many modelling applications, but here the delicately detailed plastic parts are the best solution.
ZIMMERIT
The hull and turret's exterior surfaces come pre-zimmerited, essential for the specific tanks depicted and it is remarkably realistic-looking, even in the tricky, curved areas around the turret loading hatch and rear plate. The large uncoated patches on the turret sides are original features of tanks from s.H.Pz.Abt.505 and were there to allow the large 'charging knight' emblems to be stencilled over a smooth surface.
TRACKS
The tracks are supplied in individual-link form and are of the non-articulated, glue-together type, This is a slight fiddle but they are fundamentally straightforward to assemble if liquid cement is used. There are small ejector-pin marks on the inner faces of both link types, but these will be easy – if a little time-consuming – to file/sand off.
TOOL CLAMPS
Takom have taken a rational approach with the tool clamps; each clamp is moulded in with the tool but alternative 'lever' parts are provided in photo-etched brass, should a more three-dimensional appearance be preferred. The modeller can just snip off the moulded plastic lever and replace it with the metal part,
fixed with CA glue, a very good compromise in my opinion.
MARKINGS
Two markings-options are provided; tank 1/s.H.Pz. Abt.505 and tank 2/s.H.Pz.Abt. 505. Both are overall dark yellow with a soft-edged, red-brown camouflage pattern overspray. Tank No.1 also carries winter whitewash in a disruptive pattern. Both tanks exhibit the 505's famous 'charging knight' emblem on their turret sides, as mentioned earlier. ('s.H.Pz.Abt.' is an abbreviation of 'Schwere Heerespanzerabteilung' or Heavy Panzer Battalion in English).
THOUGHTS?
This is one big box-load of King Tiger from Takom and from our initial sprue inspection, it looks quite magnificent. Detail is sharply rendered and it appears that a lot of research has gone into its creation. There will always be a few niggles; non-articulated tracks can be a pain to cement together cleanly, the rear-hull positioning light-tube is moulded-in and as such is an inverted 'U' shape instead of a cylinder and there are some big ejector-pin marks on the turret roof's underside surface, but these can all be addressed by the modeller. It's a valiant effort by Takom and we can't wait to see how it goes together. Red-oxide primer at the ready! ● MODEL SPEC TAKOM KING TIGER HENSCHEL TURRET W/ZIMMERIT KIT NO.2047 SCALE; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1:35 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .IM, PE, WS AVAILABILITY; Takom models are available from good model shops and online. I
’ve been a race fan pretty much since birth due to being born into a racing family. I have followed a lot of forms of motorsports for as long as I can remember. With that being the case, my modelling has pretty much always focused on racing related subjects as well. With the majority of my detailed projects usually being Nascar race cars. As a teenager and a racing fanatic when the Tom Cruise movie 'Days of Thunder' came out in the early 1990s, I was blown away by it! I’ve lost track how many times I have watched it, and I collected everything that had to
do with the movie and the cars that were in it. As my skills have improved I finally felt I was ready to build the villain of the story’s car, Rowdy Burns’ menacing black #51 Exxon Chevrolet Lumina. Revell produced an all new kit at the time the movie was released. It has great detail out of the box, but I wanted to go even further with mine and really detail every area of the car. With the most recent release of Powerslide’s excellent decal sheet for the car, a fresh Revell kit, and a few reference photos I was set to build.

The starting point was a moulded in white Revell Chevy Lumina kit. The front and rear bumpers have been installed and smoothed out with Evercoat two-part putty. The hood and trunk were both hinged with Model Car Garage photo-etch hinges. The hood was temporarily held in place with wire
The chassis was built from the kit with the addition of several extra bars to make it more accurate. .080, and 1/16 Evergreen rod were used to build the front bumper and engine bars. In the trunk area small brass rods were added to support the rear package tray. The fuel cell protection bars were also scratch built from .080 rod
With all the chassis work complete, the entire chassis was primed, and painted with a light grey lacquer. After drying, it was clear coated with two-part urethane clear. All roll-bar padding was painted with acrylic flat black jar paint. The author also began to install the front suspension at this point. The rotors and rotor hats were machined on a Sherline lathe for a true metal brake rotor
The lower sway bar links were taken from a chrome plated photo etch sheet from Dirt Modeler. After installing onto the chassis, they were connected with miniature links
CONSTRUCTION
Usually when I start a project like this, I want to have a good idea of what level of detail I am trying to achieve before I even begin building so I know what steps to start with. With this particular project I knew right from the start I wanted to add as much detail as I could. That meant the car would be displayed with the hood and trunk posed open, and the tyres and wheels displayed separately. I first started with the Lumina body. The front nose piece, and rear bumper were glued to the body and blended in with Evercoat catalysed putty. After sanding the areas smooth, I began to work on the trunk. Using the backside of my hobby knife I cut the trunk lid open and sanded all the edges smooth. Both the hood and the trunk were then hinged with photo-etch pieces. Some underside detailing was also added to both parts with small styrene rod to match the 1:1 car. The body parts were
Moving to the rear, soft embossing metal was cut and bent to shape and applied to the rear fender tops. Fuel filter and fuel lines were also added using Detail Master braided line and fittings

straight from the spray can and set aside to dry. Next I turned my attention to the chassis construction. I used a majority of the kit parts, but there was room for improvements. I began by removing the moulded-in window net and the rear filler panels from of each side of the roll cage. New chassis bars were added to the front engine bay with Evergreen .080 rod. Smaller bars and the front bumper were made with Evergreen 1/16 rod. It is important to have the body close by for periodical test fits so that the bumper fits the body tightly. Brass suspension brackets from the Dirt Modeler company were added for the front shock mounts. Smaller braces were added using some fine brass wire. After I was satisfied with the body and chassis modifications, the inside of the body panels and the completed chassis were sprayed with a light grey lacquer and clear coated with at two-part urethane clear coat.
The rear suspension was built up as an entire assembly before being installed. More turned aluminium rotors were used in the rear, along with turned aluminium spring perches. Brake lines were added, as well as the rear end oil lines. Again, Detail Master braid and fittings were used here. This is now ready to be added to the chassis
56
The seat has been glued in place and an aftermarket seatbelt set added. The author has also begun to add electrical and oil lines to the interior and engine bay. Oil tank details include turned metal oil breathers, as well as heavy orange oil lines from Detail Master insulated wire
Once attached to the chassis, the oil lines were hooked up to the rear end oil cooler. The rear shocks and springs can also be added at this point

FRONT SUSPENSION
Engine detailing began with the addition of spark plug wires and turned aluminium pulleys to replace the kit plastic pieces. The author has also begun to add the fuel lines and transmission details
After the clear had cured for a few days I began to start working on the front suspension. The kit pieces were used for the upper and lower control arms, as well as the steering links. Brake lines were added using Detail Master #1 fitting line and braided line, along with Detail Master #1 AN fittings. The brake rotors were machined on my Sherline lathe and mill and then added to the front spindles. To replicate the lower sway bar arms, I used some chrome plated photo-etch linkages from Dirt Modeler. The chrome plating really adds a nice metallic effect. I next plumbed the power steering lines and anything else that needed to be detailed before the engine was installed. New front springs were added by simply winding some detail wire around a paint brush, and installing them into the lower control arms. The final touch was to add some neon orange paint to the end of the lug nut studs.
INTERIOR/TRUNK DETAILS
The kit headers were sanded to remove mould lines, glued together, then painted with Alclad Metallic Bright Silver as a base colour. The next step was to simulate heat staining with carious Alclad shades. Hot Metal Sepia, yellow, and violet along with Steel were all finely airbrushed on

One of my favourite areas of detailing on a Nascar subject is the interior. This is usually where the cars have some unique things that distinguish them from other cars, such as the seat style, or dash arrangement. I started by painting the moulded-in roll bar padding with an acrylic flat black paint by brush. On bars that are missing padding, such as the centre bars, Pro Tech roll bar padding was cut to size and slid into place. The machined breathers on top of the oil tank box are also produced by Pro Tech. To add some life to the dash, I began by drilling out the centres of all the gauges until just the moulded outer ring remained. Next, styrene rod was selected that would just slide into those openings. A separate rod was cut for each gauge opening, then a decal was applied to the end. Once the dash had been painted flat black and the dash panel painted silver, the rods with the gauges were slid into place from the

This is a handy five-pot set of surface effects for the weathering of WW2 German camouflage, always a popular subject area. In the pack we have ‘Dry Steppe’ (a mud paste), ‘Brown Wash for German Dark Yellow’ (enamal-based colour-wash), ‘Dark Earth Filter’ (enamal-based colour-wash), Streaking Grime (enamel-based colour-wash) and Dark Earth (pigment). A useful project to keep in the modelling arsenal.

V rear side. A small amount of glue was
used on the back side to hold them in place. After they were completely dry, the excess was cut off. The kit seat was used, but with a few modifications. First three holes were opened up in it to allow the seat belts to pass through it. After painting it silver to replicate the bare aluminium it is made up from, the side areas were brush-painted with a semi-gloss black acrylic paint. The centre area was then painted with a thick coat of flat black and the still-wet seat was dropped into a plastic bag filled with a black craft embossing powder. The powder clings to the wet paint and once dry is held firmly in place giving a simulated fabric texture. The seat was now glued into the chassis and seat belts installed. The final bit of detailing was to add some red and black electrical wires, along with some heavy orange coated oil lines down the drivers side on the interior. Moving back into the trunk area, a new fuel cell plate was added from a Model Car Garage photo-etch kit. Fuel lines were added using Detail Master braided lines and fittings. A soft embossing metal was used to make the outer 'crush' panels the car ran to seal the chassis to the body. Using a pen, ribs were pressed into the soft metal, then they were bent to shape and glued to the chassis fender tubs.
REAR SUSPENSION AND ENGINE WORK
There are a lot of opportunities to add extra detail to the rear suspension. Like the front end, a set of machined aluminium brake rotors was used. A set of turned aluminium spring perches were glued onto the rear suspension at this time as well. Almost all of the detail work that needs to be done can be added before the complete sub-assembly was added to the chassis. This includes all the brake lines and rear-end oil lines. Once complete it was mounted to the chassis and the oil lines connected to the rear end cooler. Rear shocks were installed at this time as well. Another area where you can really show a lot of detail on these types of cars is the engine. Especially since the hood will be permanently posed open. The basic kit engine block, cylinder heads and valve covers were used. From there, a full set of custommachined pulleys were added to the front of the engine. Again, Pro Tech oil breathers and spark plug wires were used to detail the top of the engine. Fuel and oil lines were duplicated
With the body work completed, the hood, trunk, and body were primed with grey lacquer primer. From there the inside of each was painted the same light grey as the chassis. The grey was then masked off and the body pieces were ll painted with House of Kolor black. After the black had dried, each part was clear coated with Omni two-part urethane clear coat. Any imperfections in the clear were polished out, and then the Powerslide Exxon decals were applied
With all the decals on, a quick mock up was done to check progress

The engine was installed next and the exhaust could be connected. The body was finally added to the chassis at this point as well
At the rear, the driveshaft was connected to the rear end and final details could be added such as the rear pan hard bar, and driveshaft safety loop
Under the hood the remaining oil and fuel lines were connected. The hood prop rods were also glued in place to hold the hood permanently in the up position
The tyres and wheels could now be finished. The tread areas are sanded with a coarse sanding stick. The author also gave the lug nuts a dark wash to show some depth against the silver wheels. Tyre markings were a combination of hand painting, and Powerslide decals
A new window net was cut from thin strips of athletic tape and then laid into position. It was brush painted with Tamiya Flat Red acrylic paint and installed with photo-etch hardware
using more braided lines and fittings. Tamiya clear blue and clear red from the jar work well to add the colour anodizing to the fittings. The kit headers were also used. After sanding off mould lines and imperfections they were glued together and sprayed with a bright Alclad II silver base coat. After drying, a dark steel shade was applied using a fine spray set on my Badger airbrush. That was then followed by some clear Alclad II 'Hot Metal' Violet, Amber, and Blue shades to simulate the heat staining the headers show after getting hot repeatedly. The headers could now be
glued to the engine, the remaining oil lines added to the dry sump system and the engine glued into the chassis. With it in place the driveshaft could then be connected to the rear end and the basic undercarriage was complete.
Body painting and decals
Moving back to the body, it had previously had the inside painted in light grey and clear coated. These areas were all masked off to prevent any of the black from getting on them. A House of Kolor gloss black was then airbrushed over the body, hood and trunk. This was followed by two coats of an Omni brand
two-part urethane clear coat. I gave the body a good scrubbing after polishing with a mild hand soap to remove any residue left over from the polishing compounds. It was now ready for decals. To bring the Rowdy Burns #51 to life, I used a decal sheet just for this car produced by Powerslide Decals. These are high quality decals printed by Cartograf in Italy and include the proper neon orange stripes and the really cool chrome borders on the Exxon logos; just like the car appeared in the movie. The decals went on with little trouble and really capture the look of the 1:1 vehicle.

ASSEMBLY V FINAL With the body painted, polished
and decals applied and the chassis complete, I could begin final assembly. First step was to get the body onto the chassis and glued on for the last time. Once firmly in place the windows could be installed, along with adding the exhaust pipes and small body braces. The hood and trunk were put into position and held in the hinges with tiny pieces of aluminium rod and glued 'up' to show off the details under them. In the engine bay the last remaining oil lines, water lines and radiator ducting were installed. Now was when the tyres and wheels can be detailed as well. Since I was to display the car up on a stand, the tyres would just be placed beside the complete car. I started by sanding the tread area of each tyre with a coarse sanding stick to remove mould seams and to simulate wear. The wheels were painted a dull metallic silver and pushed into the tyres. The Good Year logos are decals and to make sure they went on and looked correct, the sidewalls of the tyres were first glossed-up with a varnish. This was then followed by the decals, then finally a matt coat was sprayed over them to seal in the decals and to make them look painted-on. Valve stems were added as well as some fine, hand-painted tyre markings. A simple stand was made from square styrene stock and with that the #51 was complete and ready to be put on display. â—?

The Editor’s Page... Tamiya make good use of the easy-to-build HVSS suspension for the new M40
BIG SHOT, INBOUND
A
s you’ll have seen in this month’s News Desk, Tamiya’s next major 1:35 release will be the M40 ‘Big Shot’ 155mm self-propelled howitzer. A single example (a T83 prototype) did just make it to the European front in World War Two, but the vehicle’s main combat experience was during the 1950-53 Korean War. The machine weighed around forty tons and was powered by
a 340hp Continental R975 EC2 radial petrol engine, giving it a road-speed of 24mph. The 155mm gun fired a projectile of 95lbs to a range of over fourteen miles, giving the artillery units a long and powerful reach. By the time you read this, I will have the test-shot of Tamiya’s new kit on the workbench, so as the saying goes ‘watch this space’! ● See you again next time editor@tamiyamodelmagazine.com
The new 1:35 kit won’t be Tamiya’s first M40; the company released a 1:21 model back in the early 1960s and it’s a valuable collector’s item these days
EDITOR’S CHOICE BANDAI 1:62000 STAR DESTROYER I picked up this beautiful little kit in Tokyo back in the summer. It’s by Bandai of course and I believe the scale is 1:6200! The detail is astonishing and all for just ¥480 (about £3.50) which is amazing value I also picked up the X-Wing and Poe’s X-Wing in the same series, both in 1:144 I think. I hope this series grows! See you again next time editor@tamiyamodelmagazine.com
