DIORAMA SPECIAL FEATURE: OPERATION URGENT FURY 1983 TAMIYA 1:35 M561 GAMA GOAT â—? KIT NO.35330
OPERATION URGENT FURY 1983 To commemorate the 30th anniversary of Operation Urgent Fury, TMMI brings you this superb diorama from Japanese modeller Mr Kase, using no less than four of Tamiya's new Gama Goat kits
O
peration Urgent Fury was a US-led invasion of Grenada in October-December 1983, prompted by a military coup which had expelled a revolutionary government and the invasion resulted in a restoration of constitutional government in Grenada. The US Army's Rapid Deployment Force (1st, 2nd Ranger Battalions and 82nd Airborne Division Paratroopers), US Marines, US Army Delta Force and US Navy SEALs and other combined forces comprised the 7,600 troops from the United States, Jamaica and members of the Regional Security System (RSS) defeated Grenadian resistance after a low-altitude airborne assault by the 75th Rangers on Point Salines Airport on the southern end of the island, while a Marine helicopter and amphibious landing occurred on the northern end at Pearl's Airfield shortly afterward. The military government of Hudson Austin was deposed and replaced by a government appointed by GovernorGeneral Paul Scoon until elections were held in 1984. (Edited source; Wikipedia).

DIORAMA SPECIAL FEATURE: OPERATION URGENT FURY 1983 TAMIYA 1:35 M561 GAMA GOAT l KIT NO.35330
a V Something little different
Inspired by this operation and wanting to build a diorama of something other than the rubble of street fighting or another muddy Russian road, I decided to construct an amphibious assault scene, using Tamiya's excellent new 1:35 M561 Gama Goat kit; four of them, to be precise! To get a feel for the landscape, style of houses, colours of the earth, beach sand, vegetation and ocean of Grenada (somewhere I have never visited) I referred to 'Google Maps'. I also watched Youtube clips to observe the running (and swimming) of the Gama Goat for the realistic re-production of the waves around the vehicle. As stated, I made four Gama Goats; three straight from the box plus one converted to the personnel carrier type using the radio and antenna-post parts from Tamiya's M151 kit.
The vehicles and figures The vehicles were painted using Tamiya Acrylic paints for all camo colours. The undersides of the hulls were over-sprayed with X-19 Smoke to represent a wet look and the wheels were painted with X-1 Black (gloss) for the same reason. Pigments from Mig Productions and the ash from incense sticks was used for the dust. All the figures are from Tamiya – except two civilians which are by Preiser – and there's a total of fifteen figures on the diorama; drivers and crews from the Gama

The author did an amazing job with the water, using various materials described in the main text.
The tyres of the Goats in the water were painted with Tamiya X-1 Black (gloss) to impart a wet look.

THE BEACHFRONT HOUSE
The waves lapping on the beach are extraordinarily realistic and really bring this scene to life.
Based on the pictures of houses in Grenada found on various websites, the wooden building's basic structure was made from foam board. The windows and door were made using the injectionmoulded plastic parts from MiniArt building kits. The outer wall surface was covered with a thin layer of plaster, then painted with water-based paints. The porch floor and hand rails etc., were made from flat plastic sheet and the roof was made from corrugated plastic sheet as used by railway modellers. The eaves were made with thin aluminium sheet, pressed onto a brass corrugated pattern then bent up and deformed. The roof was painted a dark colour (grey/ brown), then over-sprayed
with X-21 Flat Base and X-20A Acrylic Thinner for the white, faded effect. Have you ever had the experience of adding too much X-21 to a Tamiya colour and the surface became white and chalky when it dried? Well, I used this chemical reaction to my advantage here! The surfaces of the porch floor and hand rails were scratched up with a wire brush, then painted. This process was repeated few times to reproduce the worn out wood effect. AK Interactive's 'Worn Effects' was used for the paint-chipping on the house's outer walls. The vegetation was made using real twigs (found and gathered in the park) plus finer branches and leaves from Joefix Studio.
MAKING THE OCEAN
The ocean was made with 'paper clay'. Once this had dried, I painted it with Tamiya Acrylic X-23 Clear Blue and X-25 Clear Green, then the surface was covered with thick layers of clear spray (synthetic resin enamel clear spray which can be found out in do-it-yourself shops; in Japan at least!) for the glossy result. Furthermore, 'silicon based clear clay' was used for the crests of waves around the vehicle hulls and wheels, which were partly painted white to depict foam. I really enjoyed making this ocean diorama and it is a great honour for me that many readers of TMMI might enjoy seeing my work. â—?

N F1 LEGEND
he Lotus 49 of 1967 marked a milestone in the history of Formula 1; it was the first time the engine of an F1 car was used as part of the chassis. The monocoque ended just behind the cockpit and the engine – bolted directly to the back wall – acted as an integral part of the structure of the car. For this purpose, Colin Chapman required a sufficiently rigid motor and it was the firm of Cosworth that was entrusted with the work. The founders of the firm, Mike Costin and Keith Duckworth, devised the famous V8 DFV ('Double Four Valve'; double overhead camshaft and four valves per cylinder) three-litre Formula 1 engine which lasted for fifteen years, winning 155 races. In the 1967 season, the Lotus 49 was entrusted to Jim Clark and Graham Hill from the third Grand Prix of that year, winning in its first appearance at Zandvoort. The car went on to win three further races (Silverstone, Watkins Glen and Mexico) but was beaten by the Repco Brabham BT24 of Dennis Hulme, the Championship winner of 1967, and Jack Brabham. The '49 was the last Lotus to wear the traditional green and yellow colours of the brand. 1968 brought a new sponsor who imposed their own colours on the cars. Also, this was the last Lotus F1 car to race without a spoiler. Lotus-lovers 'Ebbro' continue to show their commitment to the team of Colin Chapman with their third 1:20 kit of a historic Lotus (the first two being the Lotus 72C of 1970 and Lotus 72E 1972). F1 fans can rightly rejoice in Ebbro's releases as none of these crucial F1 designs had been reproduced in injected plastic kit-form before. Throughout the 1967 season, Lotus 49 constantly evolved, with changes being made at almost every race. Ebbro have clearly studied this issue and include many optional parts that allow the modeller to reproduce the car in different configurations seen during the season. The versions offered are for the GPs of the Netherlands, Great Britain, Italy, the USA and Mexico. The decals are printed by Italian markingsTMMI 220 February 2014

This scheme is on the restored car that can be seen running in historical races. I relied on the book 'Joe Honda Racing Pictorial Series No.26' published by Model Factory Hiro which contains many pictures in colour and black and white of the vintage car.
The decals have been applied; the yellow areas are not painted, but are the decals.
LET'S GO!
Early in the assembly, you must choose which version you want to build. For me, it was the GP of Great Britain won by Jim Clark, which differs from that of the GP of the Netherlands by the inclusion of a fully transparent windscreen. We must consider that the timeline for the various versions are distinguished by a lot of other differences too and it's worth studying
The front suspension builds up directly onto the front of the monocoque, followed by the radiator and its associated plumbing.
The completed mid-section, ready for engine and suspension.
the instructions and making mental notes of which parts you need for your build. For the seat, there is no harness in the box, not even a decal; after some research, it would appear that the drivers of the time had no harnesses. Today, this seems outrageous because of the risk of ejection from the car, but I suppose it was easier to evacuate the car before it ignited following a crash. Early F1 cars
were extremely dangerous things. The steering wheel was painted Citadel red-brown instead of the dull red recommended in the instructions. The body parts were painted separately and it's noteworthy that Ebbro has broken the body parts down like the real car rather than as half-shells. Riveting is finely moulded and the paint needs to be very thin to preserve it. Each body part was primed in grey
U
For the GP of the Netherlands at Zandvoort, the windscreen was made entirely from Plexiglas. To align the two parts that constitute it, toothpicks were inserted in the locations of mirrors. The pieces were then bonded with an epoxy adhesive.
Two types of windscreen are included: one with a green rim that was used early in the season and the second, a full Plexiglas one, as shown above right, fitted to the car of Jim Clark. For the British GP, Clark used the second windscreen while Hill was still using the first.

Various aluminium paints are available, but the author mainly used X-32 Tamiya enamel.
Tamiya’s Panel Line Accent Color was used on the gearbox casing.
Ebbro does not provide wiring in the kit, so the author used tubing from Model Factory Hiro for the electrical and fuel lines. Above right, we see the ignition leads in place.
Here we can see the rear suspension take shape as its various elements are fitted to the engine and gearbox, which formed part of the car’s chassis. The parts are delicate and require careful handing.
The engine is a one-time fit to the monocoque; it snaps into place, so don’t fit it too early or you won’t be able to get it off!
V then painted with Tamiya
TS-43 Racing Green, which is perfect. I wondered about painting the yellow stripes rather than using decals, but with such high quality transfers to hand, it's really not necessary so I chose not to over-complicate the task. At first, I thought the yellow was a bit too bright compared to vintage pictures but in fact, it was the photos that are a little pale due to fading! The use of a softener is essential when applying the decal to the air intake on the top panel, to shape the pattern in front of the nose and more generally to 'melt' the markings onto the rivets. Of course, the nose was provisionally fitted in order to align the yellow stripes. Once the decals were dry, the body was covered with polyurethane varnish. The frame was then
assembled with a few drops of cyanoacrylate glue.
Cosworth DFV
The engine supplied by Ebbro resembles the one produced by Tamiya a few years ago. This would not be surprising since there are very close links between Ebbro and Tamiya, as evidenced by the 2CV van released as a cooperative effort a few months back, but in fact the 49's engine is all Ebbro. Being 'bare metal' aluminium, I used Model Master Matt Aluminum for the block. The Ford markings on the cylinder heads and the bolt-heads were touched in with Model Master Silver. It's a little disappointing Ebbro doesn't provide the electrical cables for the engine; I used 0.5mm Model Factory Hiro cables and I also used
Almost there; just the wheels and nose cowling need to be fitted now.
translucent yellow tubing for the fuel lines. The air inlets were protected by wire mesh screens – probably brass – over the tops of the intake trumpets. The mesh was very fine and Ebbro represents it with translucent yellow domes which are a very good out-of-the-box solution. Purists looking for real metal screens will, no doubt, be able to find them at the usual aftermarket providers. I imagined that the engines or gearbox components of '60s F1 cars would be stained with oil and covered with dirt, but this is not the case and I was very surprised to see that their appearance was like new, or at least very clean. That having been said, to give a little visual relief to the gearbox I applied a black colour-wash the hollows in
the 'casting'. Fixing the 'box to the motor is not all that easy and I suggest you do some preliminary 'dry' tests. The assembly of the rear suspension was not really a problem but the elements are rather fragile, so perform test-fits with great care to avoid potential problems. The installation of the motor to the frame is irreversible; an L-shaped pin is inserted, which in turn snaps inside the chassis. So, do not fit the engine to the chassis prematurely because you won't be able to remove it! The advantage is that once in place, the engine/gearbox is very firmly secured to the frame. Assembly ended with the installation of the nose. During the first dry-fit, I found that the front cowling could not be fully inserted. I initially thought that
16 February 2014 TMMI 220
p 12-17 Lotus 220MN.indd 16
18/12/2013 17:31
the problem was with the radiator, because there is very little play inside, but in fact it was the sidebars of the radiator support which were rubbing against the inside of the nose. A little sanding and the nose-cowling fitted fully and held without any extra help! In conclusion, this a great kit. Ebbro has done an excellent job with their research, offering many variations and a very high level of moulding quality. The Lotus 49 and Jim Clark are true legends of F1 and this model must feature prominently in our display cases. I can not wait for Ebbro's Lotus 49B and 49C and the Tyrrell 003 to arrive! â—?
The tyres come pre-printed with Firestone logos. The wheels were stripped of their plating and re-painted with Alclad metallics.
For a perfect fit, the inside of the nose cowling was carefully filed out with a rat-tail file.

y the time you read this, Meng’s new 1:35 Leopard 1 A3/4 will probably not be their latest release, as they are certain to have created something even newer in the intervening time! But for now, this is the company’s latest 1:35 AFV and it depicts an iconic main battle tank of the Cold War era. The Leopard 1 is arguably one of the most effective tanks ever built and both Tamiya and Italeri have released kits of it, but Meng’s model is – as you might imagine – the most sophisticated production yet created, coming with working torsion-bar suspension, photo-etched parts, a choice of individuallink or one-piece vinyl tracks and a host of other features that plant the model firmly in the twenty-first century. Clear-moulded parts are included for the optical systems of the vehicle and the engine deck grille is depicted by a large PE brass part, backed with a moulded insert that replicates the real tank’s structures
extremely well. Naturally, as with any kit, some things need addressing and in this case, and small fittings such as grab handles etc will look better if replaced with copper wire and as with any tank model, the fitting of Friulmodel tracks will always transform its appearance, even though the kit-supplied options are pretty decent. The back-faces of the roadwheels are a little plain but these are hidden on the built model and as such, are not really a big deal. The main gun barrel is split conventionally in two halves and with some careful seam clean-up, will look excellent. This is an impressive new release that captures the lines of the big cat, a tank that still looks modern today. ● MN MODEL SPEC SCALE: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:35 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . I
STAVS,
THE BLOCK!
was quite happy when the Editor asked me to build Revell’s 1:32 Bf109G-6. When it finally arrived I opened the box immediately and was amazed by the amount of plastic present. And the first impressions were very favourable, although some minor cons caught my eye almost immediately. I will address the most important ones as we go along but one thing has to be said from the start; given the price of the kit – it retails around €20 here in The Netherlands – Revell’s efforts have to be recommended. This is possibly one of the nicest G6’s around in this scale and it has huge potential for superdetailing. The G-6 is an impressive flying machine. It’s easy to see that it is family of the earlier E-series which were swarming the skies over Europe only three years earlier. But the G series hasn’t got the fragile looks of the E-series: this '109 was a battle hardened and menacing machine. It was made operational in mid 1942 and soon it became clear that it did have an Achilles heel; the G-series had to perform many different missions and its weight increased substantially. The petite dancer of the earlier days had become a heavy footed giant. Her firing power increased considerably. The G-6 is recognizable because of the two bulges in front of the canopy which give room to MG131 machine guns. Some 12,500 G-6s were built by the end of the war. That bulkiness was something I always wanted to portrait and the Revell kit offered me the opportunity to give my first G-6 a go.
THE COCKPIT
The build starts with the cockpit. Revell have done a nice job here, although there are some small points for improvement. The cockpit builds like a box that has to be attached between the two fuselage halves. The floor part and instrument panel are nicely detailed. The side-parts are not bad at all but they could do with extra detail (some wiring would add a lot already). The transparent fuel line is a very nice touch. The stick however has the wrong shape and if you strive for perfection you should replace it. The safety harness is moulded on the seat pan and back seat; that to me really was a no-go in this scale. I was aiming for an out of the box build, but I definitely would replace it with aftermarket items. Eduard, HGW, Fine Molds and RB Productions all offer options that are better than what’s in the kit. I painted all parts of the cockpit with RLM66. I also added a thin coat of Humbrol Matt 63 in some selected areas that would collect dust and grime. I used a very thin mixture for this, which gave me the opportunity to carefully build up colour density. Then a dry coat of Tamiya Gloss Varnish was applied and left to harden completely. With various thinned down browns I made small colour variations on the RLM66. By thinning the paint even more than you would for a wash you can reach very subtle effects. A wash of Humbrol Matt Black, Raw Umber oil paint and thinner was applied in the deeper areas and around detail. Again a coat of gloss varnish was airbrushed and left to dry. Now it was time
When build straight from the kit the cockpit really isn’t that bad. The level of detail is very acceptable, although the sidewalls could do with some extra wiring. The moulded on harness should be replaced by an aftermarket item. For the detail buffs; the stick isn’t the correct shape and you might want to replace this as well.

All parts received a coat of RLM66. A second coat with a bit of Gloss White added was airbrushed on the more exposed areas of the cockpit. Then a very thinned coat of Humbrol 63 was sprayed on spots that might have collected dirt and grime. The whole was sealed with Tamiya Gloss Varnish.
V to paint the smaller details.
The transparent fuel line was painted yellow. The safety harness was painted with Tamiya Tan colours, mixed with some white for highlights. The decal for the instrument panel was cut into three pieces and with some Micro Sol and Set, pressed into place. A coat of Tamiya Semi Gloss Varnish finished the painting of the cockpit.
BUILDING THE G-6
Building the fuselage and the wings is a relatively swift operation. Generally speaking the fit is excellent but there are some areas that need extra attention. First of all, after the cockpit is being sandwiched between the two fuselage halves you will need to glue the two nose panels in place. This leaves a seam under the centre cockpit window which will need to be cleaned up as it isn’t a panel line
The wheel wells are nicely done and there’s a lot of detail. I painted the wells RLM02 after which subsequent pin-washes and drybrushing made the detail stand out. I especially liked the lightening holes that add depth to this part of the build.
Details should pop out, and one way t do this is to add a wash. In this case a highly diluted mixture of raw umber oil paint, Humbrol Matt Black and thinner was run along all details. The contrast may seem a bit strong but most of these parts will be hidden deep in the cockpit without much light, which will smooth out the effect.
on the real thing. The top nose section where the MGs are will also leave you with a seam that needs to be done away with. These are no major operations, especially when you take a little care when you glue the parts in place, but they do illustrate that design-wise the Revell G-6 has it’s little complications. The two bulges on either side of the nose are to small and should be replaced with aftermarket items. The wings houses some of the nicest wheel wells I’ve seen on a '109, but at the same time is a bit of a strange affair as well: the top wings consists of two parts on each side and I would advise you to leave these parts to dry thoroughly after gluing, as they don’t make for the strongest joint. The last noticeable points for improvement would be the intake lip of the air intake on the left hand side of the nose which is far too thin
The cockpit done except for the gunsight. To me the highlight of the cockpit is the transparent fuel line on the right hand side. A nice touch from Revell! The kit decals were used for the instrument panel and they conformed well to the raised detail.
and lacks the significant bolts and the overdone detail on the flaps. All these things aren’t too bad and can be corrected with some aftermarket stuff, but I believe Revell could have paid a little more attention to these smaller hiccups. Nevertheless, the fit of all parts is good and I managed to complete building the entire fuselage and wings in only two evenings!
PAINTING AND WEATHERING For me the painting part is always where the fun really starts. I wanted to experiment with some new techniques and one of those was the use of very thin layers of paint to get tonal variation and depth in the paintwork. Just to avoid endless repetitions: I often airbrush thin coats of gloss varnish in this stage. It’s sufficient to know that I do this each time that I want to protect the last layers of
Although there are over 80 steps in the building process the assembly goes quite swiftly. On the fuselage some seams appear in places that are really annoying as in reality they wouldn’t be there (cockpit panels). The wing is a six part affair and I personally didn’t like this arrangement at all.
paint or weathering from the stages and processes that are to follow. To give you an idea: I used five or six layers of varnish on the G6. Painting started off with a coat of RLM76 Lichtblau on the fuselage sides and the undersides. After this had dried a mixture of about 50% Humbrol Gloss White and 50% RLM76 was thinned down considerably and airbrushed in a cloudy pattern over the base-coat. This coat was allowed to dry completely after which RLM75 Grauviolett was used for the basic pattern on the wings and topsides of the fuselage. This was all done freehand. I then thinned the RLM75 down and carefully sprayed the mottling. This was done with low pressure so I could gradually build up the colour density. Then RLM74 Graugrün was sprayed in the same way I did with the RLM75. RLM74 was also

The first colours have been airbrushed: RLM76 Lichtblau for the bottom and the sides of the fuselage. This base-colour has been lightened with some Gloss White and a patchy pattern was randomly applied. This is especially visible just behind the cockpit. This coat was allowed to dry completely after which RLM 75 Grauviolett was used for the basic pattern on the wings and some mottling on the fuselage.
Here you can see how the RLM 74 Graugrün was applied. More mottling on the sides of the fuselage and the saw-pattern camouflage on the wings. RLM 04 Gelb was used for the bottom of the engine cowling. The tail section still has to be painted white.
After the painting was done the decals are applied. I used EagleCals sheet EC37, that includes Alfred Grislawski’s “White 10”. The decals performed well but I had some troubles with the crosses on the fuselage that needed touching up. Everything was protected with a coat of Tamiya Gloss Varnish to protect the work so far from the next steps in weathering.
I mixed some Tamiya XF-1 (Black) and XF-64 (Red Brown) and thinned it to a 10:90 paintto-thinners ratio. This mixture was then airbrushed on all panel lines, around detail and in the area where the exhaust soot would go.
A very thinned down mixture of RLM 81 Braunviolett and thinner was airbrushed in the wingroot and some panels to represent some discolouration and break up the monotony of the colours so far. The brown adds a little warmth to the base colours.
The airframe has been covered with small dots of white, grey, green and brown oil paints. With a wide flat brush moistened with thinner they were then drawn into streaks over the fuselage and the wings. Again this procedure helps to break the base-colours.

This is another of Zvezda’s tidy little 1:100 tanks and its rationalised parts count makes for very fast assembly. The tracks and wheels are moulded as one, and the two-part turret has its gun barrel moulded in place. Tidy detail, accurate profile and a fun, quick build.

A wash of Humbrol matt black and raw umber oil paint was run through all panel lines and around detail. It sharpens the patchy paintwork. A silver pencil was used to create the little scratches you can see. After all this was done again a coat of protective varnish was airbrushed.
V used to apply the tooth-saw
camo pattern on the wings. The Editor provided me with EagleCals decal sheet #37 and I was immediately enthusiastic about ‘White 10’, Alfred Grislawski's bird. It has a beautiful white tail that carries an impressive seventy-nine victory marks. Grislawski had 133 victories by the end of the war and was holder of the Knights Cross. The EagleCals set works very well with some Sol and Set and after two nights of work everything was where it was supposed to be. After another gloss coat I was ready to start with the next weathering steps. First of all a very thinned down mixture of RLM81 Braunviolett and thinner was airbrushed in the wingroot and some panels to represent some discolouration and break up the monotony of the colours so far. I then applied a pattern of small dots of oil paint on the fuselage and wings. The colours are randomly placed. I used blue, raw umber, warm grey, white and green. After the dots had set (it takes about half an hour) I started streaking them in with a wide brush, slightly moist with thinner. This process continues until most of the paint is gone and some very subtle colour variation and striping remains over the base colours. The next step consisted of spraying a very thin layer of Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black mixed with Tamiya XF-64 Red Brown over all panel lines. This needs to be done very subtly, and in hindsight I think I overdid it a little. One is never too old to learn! After
The landing gear has been painted separately. Main colours are RLM02 and RLM76. The weathering process has been exactly the same as with the fuselage. I deviated from the OOB plan with the decals and did it for the second time here: the wheels are the superb Barracudacals castings, made by Roy Sutherland.
this had all set I ran a wash of thinned Humbrol Black and Raw Umber enamel paint into all panel lines and around detail. Then, as a last step, it was the time for some detail painting and chipping. Chipping was done with a silver pencil. The whole lot was sealed with Tamiya X-35 Semi Gloss Clear.
CONCLUSION
In my eyes Revell’s Bf109G-6 is a very good kit. Yes, there are points that can and should have been improved upon. The most eye-catching to me are the safety harness that is moulded on the seat, the propellor, the air intake with its thin lip, perhaps the incorrect shape of the intake under the nose, the ammo bulges on either side of the nose which are not entirely correct in shape and undersized and the over-engineered flaps. There are and will be a number of aftermarket sets
to correct this. There are also some oddities as far as engineering is concerned, in particular the nose side panels and the two part upper wing. Nevertheless, one has to remember that this kit retails in Europe for around €20. With an aftermarket set doubling the price and perhaps some scratchbuilding you will have an absolute winner in your hands. And for you who want to build an OOB: something very acceptable can be made straight out of the box, as I hope to have shown here in this article. Happy modelling! ●
The wheels are in place and I believe they nicely integrate with the rest of the weathered fuselage. Time for last details like the cockpit, antenna’s and wiring. She’s almost done!

ccording to the company’s website, “the A350-900 is the cornerstone member of Airbus’ all-new A350 XWB Family, which is tailored to meet airlines’ future market requirements in medium-to-long haul operations. The aircraft can accommodate 315 passengers in a two-classes, with a true long-haul capability of a range of up to 7,750 nautical miles.” It’s also a sleek and handsome machine that is perfect for production as a scale model, as Revell have amply proven with their newest civilian aircraft kit release. This is a new-tool production that uses the latest techniques of moulding to create a very accurate profile and fine, subtle detail, the latter being essential for a 1:144 model. The kit sports extremely fine, almost invisible panel lines across its airframe, the fuselage exhibiting a silky smooth, satin finish that will be ideal for the application of primer and paint. The engines feature very delicate and realisticlooking front fan discs
that look so much better than the solid discs that are sometimes used for model jetliner engines. The undercarriage looks excellent and comes with all the struts and pistons you’d expect to find in an Airbus undercarriage bay. The cockpit is represented by a reasonable flat panel with moulded-in seats and instrument panel coaming, more than adequate for what’ll be seen through the cockpit windows. The cabin windows are represented by strips of clear mouldings with raised window panels that push-fit from inside into cut-outs in the fuselage halves. I’m ashamed to admit I have never built (or rather, completed) an airliner kit and quite how to paint the windows remains a mystery to me, so this is a technique I’ll need to look into. Revell have done an excellent job with the Airbus A-350 900, a kit that looks every bit as refined as the real aircraft. ● MN MODEL SPEC SCALE: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:144 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Bit of an 'Arry Tate Mikael Terfors builds Wingnut Wings' 1:32 RE.8 'Harry Tate', a quirky experience!
I
guess it was the looks of this oddly shaped bird that first caught my attention. I have always had a thing for the quirky and the RE.8 is about as peculiar as they get. When looking at it, no one part seems to point in the direction of flight and one wonders what the engineers were thinking of while drawing? It was possibly these odd looks that gave the plane its nick name 'Harry Tate' after the popular Scottish comedian of the time. Designed as the RAF RE.8 (Royal Aircraft
Factory Reconnaissance Experimental 8) in 1915, it was built by a number of contractors and entered front line service in 1916. Despite a lack of performance, it soldiered on until the cessation of hostilities. Wingnut Wings first announced they were releasing it back in 2009, but we had to wait for another two years before the 'Harry Tate' appeared in their rapidly growing range of WWI 1:32 kits. A long wait for an eager builder like me – though he who waits for something good…

THE KIT AND CONSTRUCTION Like all WnW kits, this one arrives in a sturdy box with evocative box art. The box is packed with high quality mouldings and, of course, a superior set of decals from Cartograf together with the WnW comprehensive instruction booklet. Fit overall was as usual very good, and I hardly used any filler at all during the build. Because of the long production time and the various contractors for the RE.8, there were many small variations in details inside and out. WnW gives
you the option to build many different versions in this kit, which is a good thing. But it does mean you have to be very careful when reading the instructions, as it is easy to miss some small details. Also, you have to decide which profile to build early on in the construction, as the differences already starts with the instrument panel. While the manual is of the latest fashion with coloured 3D exploded views, it is perhaps not always as clear to follow as it first appears. This author thinks this kit is slightly 'fiddlier' to assemble
than the average WnW kit. Don’t be discouraged by this though, it is far easier than most WWI kits and the engineering is simply superb. If built straight OOB, you’ll end up with a really impressive replica. However I did choose to ad a few bits and pieces. The RAF 4a engine is beautifully moulded as it comes, but I planned to leave some of the cowlings off, and therefore added some leads and plumbing, using copper and brass wire. I also opened up one small hatch on the side cowlings to further expose the interior.
PAINTING
I approached painting in my usual fashion. The interior and engine were done using a mix of Tamiya acrylics and Winsor & Newton oil paints. The oils are used for texturing wood, linen and leather, giving the surfaces a depth and richness that I feel is hard to achieve in another way. I also applied plenty of oil washes to ad shadow and dirt in the appropriate places around the engine and floors. Once the fuselage halves were assembled and the lower wings attached, I

Pre-shading was done using Tamiya XF-10, which I feel, works better than black for surfaces covered in linen rather than metal. The wings and body were then sprayed with the topcoat, using a mix of olive drab and brown, to simulate the British PC10 dope. Speaking of PC10 – or Protective Covering 10 as it was known – this so called
'standard' coating of most British planes of the period, is perhaps not as standard as one would think. Modellers and historians have argued continuously over the exact hue of this dope. Consisting of a mix of yellow ochre, lamp black and iron oxide, its tone probably varied due to the mix and exposure to the elements. In its freshly applied form it would appear as olive drab, but it soon faded towards brown – so as a modeller you have a bit of leeway here. On the lower surfaces

CDL, or Clear Doped Linen, was applied. Tamiya XF-55 Deck Tan is my preferred choice as topcoat in this department.
DECALS AND WEATHERING
After the paint had thoroughly dried, I applied a couple of over-sprays of my usual mix of 'Future' polish and alcohol, before decalling could begin. These went on without much trouble at all. I had chosen to do the very attractive zig-zag adorned '7' of 52 Sqn. This decal comes in three pieces and match up
perfectly which makes for a very hassle free experience. I did use small amounts of Micro Set, but no Sol. In my experience Sol tend to fry WnW decals a bit. As the decals had set in their place, I carefully cleaned the surfaces of any residues, and then sealed the lot with more Klear. Time for some weathering. I gave the engine cowlings a thorough wash of burnt umber and thinner and the under surfaces got a treatment of washes and streaks using various earth tones. To blend in the

Rigging is a large part of “most WWI plane modelling
and British planes tend to have more rigging lines than most. The RE.8 even have a lot... roundels a bit, I masked them in portions using post-it notes and sprayed with some Tamiya Smoke.
FINAL ASSEMBLY
With the various subassemblies all painted, weathered and pre rigged, it was now time for final construction. This is the stage where many, even experienced builders, get a bit shaky; mounting a top wing does require a steady hand. Well, WnWs fantastic engineering has made wing mounting a much more hassle free experience. Yes, you still have to line everything up carefully from the outset of construction. But if you have, you will be rewarded with a top wing that almost falls into place. One way of making things easier, is to mount the wing upside down. That
”
is, lay it flat on your desk, underside up, and mount the plane upside down, sliding the struts into the exposed location holes. This gives you much better control of the process, as you can actually see what you’re doing, without having to strain you neck trying to peek under the wing. Just make sure you dry fit first to get the best angle of things.
RIGGING
Rigging is a large part of most WWI plane modelling and British planes tend to have more rigging lines than most. The RE.8 even have a lot of rigging for a British plane, but with a bit of planning everything will come out all right. I start out by locating and drilling holes in all the starting and finishing points of the wings and fuselage. This
requires careful study of the rigging diagrams, here WnW have made a quantum leap compared with how it used to be with older kits. I usually drill before I paint. This way I don’t risk damage to the surface finish. When I rig, I tend to use 'buckles' from 'Bobs buckles'. He supplies me with both brass tubes and eyelets. I superglue the eyelet in the pre drilled hole and then I attach the rigging lines from either the top- or bottom wing. This is done before attaching the upper wing. My preferred rigging thread is 0.15 mm fishing line. For control wires I use elastic EZ line, available from WnW. As the top wing has settled in place I start tensioning the lines one at a time working my way from the wing root
to wing tip. Control wires and landing gear are among the last things I rig.
FINISHING TOUCHES
After rigging, there were only some final touch ups to do and putting the prop in place. The quirky looking 'Harry Tate' was now ready for my display shelf, where it takes up quite a bit of room as this is a large bird in its finished state. Well what can I say? Wingnut Wings have brought us yet another very pleasurable build experience and state of the art kit. Though perhaps not a kit I would recommend to someone who's starting out in WWI modelling, with a bit of rigging experience, you should be fine; just follow the instructions carefully! ●

fter the conclusion of the First World War, Germany was prohibited by the Treaty of Versailles to create any heavy armoured vehicles. This did not, however, stop them from designing several in secret. The Great Depression put all these plans on hold temporarily and during the mid 1930s several designs were dusted off. The '232 family was created as a heavily armoured eight-wheel drive reconnaissance vehicle, serving as the eyes of the armoured divisions. Production ran until 1943, with approximately 600 units being built. The Sd.Kfz.232 served in Europe, North Africa and Russia, serving with distinction in all theatres. Tamiya’s 1:48 kit is broken down in a similar way to their old 1:35 kit, but the level of detail is quite high overall. The build is a simple, straightforward affair with few surprises or traps. I did, however, choose
The completed, yet un-painted model
to add a few extra details to mine. I purchased both the general photo-etched detail set and the resin/etched muffler and guards sets from Hauler. These two sets bring the '232 to life and both are a must in my opinion.
To add a bit more, I also purchased the brass 20mm gun and the MG34 from RB Models. Another must for me, as the RB products are quite inexpensive and the detail gain is huge. I also added a few small
scratchbuilt details to my model, but these will be called out, and none are too challenging, well within the skill set of even the beginner modeller Follow along, and I’ll show what we can expect from this kit.

Some of the Hauler etch is evident here. The detail improvement is obvious
Some bits of stowage were sourced from the spares box. This gives the vehicle a “lived-in look
These gorgeous brass guns are replacement items from RB Models
Hauler also provides all the replacement clasps for The tiny hull-mounted marker lights were drilled to the hull and fender hatches receive clear resin lenses later.
Here we see the Hauler set of the resin mufflers, and the etched guards. This is one area that Tamiya provided poorly in the kit. The Hauler items are highly recommended.
The turret hatch was detailed to add some realism
A power conduit was also added to the radio mast. Period photos were examined to get the placement correct.
The solid moulded top piece of the radio mast was cut away, and rebuilt to look more like the real thing. Again, Tamiya over simplified this area, but this was not as difficult to fabricate as I feared.
To begin the painting process, Tamiya XF69 NATO Black will be used a base primer. Several thin, misted coats are applied. This step will also help to show up any build flaws.

To create a suitable grey, I will mix these colours: Tamiya XF-63 German Grey, XF-19 Sky Grey, and a touch of X-4 Blue.
The result! I wanted a warm grey shade, with just a hint of blue.
Again, several thin, misted coats are desirable over one thick application.
Next, a liberal drop of XF-2 Flat White is added to the colour, and the model gets another round of spraying, lingering a little more of the centres of panels, edges, etc. The result is a nicely faded blue/grey colour
The finish now needs a protective gloss coat. I prefer to use Future floor wax. It dries to a durable, glossy acrylic finish.
The next step is to apply all the decals. I am using a kit-supplied option for the 2nd Company, 8th Armoured Recce Battalion, 5th Panzer Division on the Balkan Front, 1941.
Patience, as well as liberal amounts of Gunze’s “Mr. Mark Softer” helps to get the best from the Tamiya decals.

After many experiments, I have found a great way to restore my models to a flat finish. I use equal parts Vallejo Matt Varnish 70.520, Matt Medium 70.540, and I thin this with their own Airbrush Thinner 71.361. The results are an excellent, dead flat finish.
With these colours mixed 50/50, I will paint around the desired surface detail.
A brush dampened in clean thinner will be used to feather away the edges of the dark colour
The effect starts to become apparent.
To add some contrasting light lining, I will use Abteilung 502 oil. Here I will use Abt. 180 Copper Oxide Blue Patina.
Some contrasting, lightly coloured lines are added.
And once blended, the effect becomes apparent.

This colour is also used to apply some very light scoring to the finish. A light touch is desirable for this step.
To add some rusty effects to the thin metal muffler guards; I will use Abteilung 502 oils again. In this case, I will use Abt.060 Light Rust Brown. Light streaks are added, and gently blended.
To impart a dusty look to my model, I will lightly spray a mix of Tamiya XF-19 Sky Grey and XF-55 Deck Tan. Be very careful in this step. This could get out of hand easily, with a model that is uniformly dust coloured Not what I want here. Let the colour build very gradually.

After picking out the gun tubes in Humbrol Enamel Humbrol enamels were also used to pick out the No.33 Matt Black, I masked the two areas on stowage items. Pigments helped to blend them the 20mm tube that are the hand grips. I then into the surrounding weathering. dry-brushed the guns in a mix of enamel chrome silver and Raw Umber oils.
The jack was weathered using rusty coloured pigments, applied dry.
Here we see some more of the on-board tools.
Dust coloured pigments were used to add dust to the model’s tyres. The exposed rubber effect was achieved simply by rubbing my finger tip over the tyre side wall, exposing the black painted ‘rubber’ underneath.
Small clear resin lenses were added to the pre-drilled marker lights. These items are from ‘MV’ lenses.

KIT PREVIEW TAKOM 1:16 RENAULT FT ● KIT NO.1001
Spencer Pollard starts work on Takom's impressive new 1:16 FT-17 French Light Tank
CHAR DE CO T
he last few years has seen the emergence of a bewildering array of new model kit manufacturers, many of which have risen from the increasingly powerful Chinese economy. From these new companies we have seen a wide range of hitherto unthinkable kits being released to please the enthusiastic modeller. Perhaps the most unexpected release and the one that had many a modeller’s juices flowing, is the one we are concerning ourselves with this month, Takom’s 1:16 Renault FT. It seems as though this little tank has captured the imagination of late with a number of new kits being released, though my attention would normally be grabbed by the release of a new 1:35 kit (Meng), the idea of one in a large scale was certainly enticing and now that it is here, that initial excitement has been satisfied – more or less. From the outset, this kit appears to be as complete as you could reasonably expect in this scale. Get past the dreadful brick-red plastic and you will find a very impression collection of parts that replicate both the interior and exterior details of the vehicle with aplomb. You’ll see a complete interior, driver’s compartment, engine bay and turret as well as separate hatches that allow it all to be shown off. The detail is in the main, pleasing and though at times it looks to be a little heavy, or simplified, there is certainly enough there to provide the basis of a highly detailed model. Dig a little deeper though and there are issues – of sorts – including an annoying collection of ejection pin marks – both raised and depressed – that litter some obvious parts of the model.

The track links are built up from three individual pieces. Detail is very good.
Radiator detail. Careful painting will bring out the fine mesh grill.
The inner faces of the kit are marred by some obvious ejector pin marks. Careful removal will be needed…
There are some neat casting numbers on the sides of the turret. Note the lack of texture.
The idler wheels are somewhat simplified with a lack of detail. ITA’s replacement certainly comes into play here.

Uppermost in my thoughts at this time are the six that find their way onto the inner face of the spade assembly. Obvious to any onlooker, the curved face of this piece will make removal a real pain, but a necessary one nevertheless. The exterior of the vehicle is well dealt with and exhibits some neat touches. Of course the sheer size of the model makes some of the features appear rather over-scale, but this is simply an illusion, all areas such as the rivets, bolt heads, hinges and the like, appearing to be well handled and in scale. I was particularly taken with the manufacturer’s logos that Takom have incorporated onto the sides of the suspension units and the casting marks on the side of the turret. Being a cast-turret, I was expecting to see some evidence of texture on this part of the model, but the kit parts are smooth. Though not likely to look like a Russian T-34 turret, I would still have liked to have seen some evidence of texture. There are simplifications around the hull. The springs that adorn the suspension are moulded in one piece and as such look a little suspect, as do the tools that hang off the sides of the hull. These have been moulded with their clamps in situ and though the tools themselves are fine, the clamps will benefit from replacement with ITA’s resin and photo-etched parts. The real highlight of the vehicle and this particular kit thereof, are the tracks. These have always given these early AFVs an agricultural look and so need to be dealt with accurately, if the personality of the vehicle is to be captured. Here. They’ve been well produced with excellent detail. Each shoe is made up of three parts that combine TMMI 220 February 2014

to allow a complete run to be prototypically flexible. Though it took a while to get to grips with the fiddly nature of their assembly, once in the groove the tracks were easy to clean up and assemble, the results being very pleasing indeed. The kit is completed with a well-produced set of instructions, a small photo-etched fret of detail – that appears to be powdered-coated to match the colour of the plastic! - some chain and a small decal sheet that offers three different vehicles. The choices on the decals are as follows: • Renault FT – 2nd Section, 1st Company, 505E RAS, France 1918 • Renault FT – Co. C, 327th Tank Battalion, 1st US Tank Brigade, St. Mihile, September 1918 • ‘Passe Par Tout’, 1st Company, 2nd Section, 2nd Battalion, 1st Polish Tank Regiment 1920 Though the decals are really well done, the painting instructions are less so with only left-hand side profiles on offer, so the modeller will have to dig deep into their references to work out how the camouflage patterns should look on all of the other sides! This is a fine kit that looks to build into a neat model. Though replicated in 1:16, the diminutive size of the real vehicle makes this a far from large replica and that places it well within the scope of modellers more used to 1:35 projects. I also feel that other than the fiddly tracks, the complexity of the kit’s breakdown is such that modellers with a few kits under their belts will find little to trouble them and those with a desire to create a showstopper will have the basis on which to fulfil their dreams. Well done Takom: that’s a fine way to make an entrance. What’s next? A St Chamond – in 1:35? Wow… My thanks go out to Chris Meddings (Inside The Armour) for the review sample. l
A set-square is useful when aligning the interior walls.
A modular approach to assembly means that access to the interior is easy.
Detail, on the whole, is wonderfully realised. This is a large scale model, so the opportunity to add extra detail, is great.
Work begins on assembling the tracks. Carefully construction means they remaining fully articulated.

o matter what your interests are in life, it’s always good to step out of your comfort zone once in a while and try something new. Though I spend a great deal of my time building military models – predominantly aircraft – I like to tackle something a little more 'down to earth' once in a while. Having built Tamiya’s magnificent Red Bull F1 car earlier in the year, I decided that it was maybe time to have another go at a racing machine, though this time on two wheels instead of four… As with Tamiya, Hasegawa have created a very fine range of 1:12 motorcycles and though a lot later to the party, have tackled all of their choices with aplomb, each kit being a state of the art rendition for the modeller to enjoy. Having a number of these kits in the ‘to-do’ pile, I decided to pick what would perhaps be the simplest in terms of finish and so grabbed the Yamaha YZR500 that you see here, finished in its gorgeous colours of gloss white and day-glo orange – or more specifically, Eddie Lawson’s Championship-winning bike from the 1988 season.
INITIAL THOUGHTS…
From the off I knew that this was to be a steep learning curve and that any pretensions to creating a perfect bike were to go out of the window. Though I like bikes, I’ve never really taken the time to research the specifics in terms of detail and in this case accuracy of finish, so I could approach this as a truly relaxing project where the finesse of the finish was to be more important than the accuracy of the detail. In so doing, it allowed me to truly appreciate the kit for what it was, try some knew ideas and finishing techniques and for once, build a model that was perfect in terms of painting: there would be no weathering on this one, at all! The biggest hurdle to completing this kit was that gloss finish. Not only was I looking for a perfectly smooth surface, I was also looking to do it using perhaps the two most difficult colours possible: white and day-glo orange!
Add to that the use of multiple metallic shades, plenty of details to pick out and the application of ‘stickers’ that I wanted to look like the vinyl marking used on the real bike and I knew this was going to be a really involving kit to build!
IN THE BOX…
Hasegawa’s kit is everything that one would expect from a twenty-first century kit: well moulded, highly detailed, beautifully packaged and completed with a fine set of well-drawn instructions and in this case, gorgeous, Cartograf decals. In keeping with a lot of bike kits, this one is moulded in colour, though in this case there is thankfully no evidence of plated parts! This of course means that you will have to paint everything, but that’s all part of the fun isn’t it! The first thing I decided to do was spend an hour or so studying the instructions to help me decide on a) how best to build the kit and b) where I could cluster parts together that would be painted in the same colours. For instance, the engine block, is essentially painted in a dark aluminium colour, the frame in gloss aluminium etc., all large sub-assemblies that can be completely built and then painted in one go, details being picked out as appropriate. Across the board the delicacy of the individual components and the fit between each one is exemplary. This really helps when painting some of the smaller pieces as you can do so knowing that once finished, each will fit in place with little of no need for any additional adjustment. You’ll need to clean up some of the larger sections, the frame being uppermost in my mind at this point, but on the whole, the parts can almost be used as supplied. Whilst on the subject of clean-up, you’ll also need to tackle the seam that runs around the circumference of the two tyres, a course sanding stick, plenty of elbow grease and no little patience, being needed to complete this aspect of the kit’s construction. If I were to level a criticism at this kit, it would
The various engine components show off for the camera. This marks the start of the construction phase and in so doing, gives a fair indication of the quality of the rest of the kit. All of these parts were base-coated in Alclad II primer and then oversprayed with Dark Aluminum, Steel, Pale Burnt Metal and mixes thereof to create a group of realistic ‘metal’ components.
The completed engine block ready to be installed within the frame. The plugs with their red colouring add a nice splash of colour. Detail was popped around this part of the model with carefully applied washes of Tamiya smoke painted in place neat and thinned with a little water.

18/12/2013 17:42
The engine block fits between the two halves of the frame perfectly, only a few drops of Tamiya Extra Thin Cement being needed to hold everything in place. Amongst all of the small sub-assemblies, the rear swing-arm was perhaps my favourite. The construction and then painting of the metal arm, the chain and rear wheel, all added up to a few hours of fun. The wheel was painted with Zero Paints McLaren MP4 Red and then overpsrayed with Zero’s single-part clear coat – as was the front wheel – to create a neat, gloss finish. As with the rest of the bike, the decals were applied but not sealed into place, the appearance of vinyl ‘stickers’ rather than sealed-in decals, being important on the completed model.
The rear swing-arm assembly is held in place with a screw, a plastic cap hiding its crosshead, once in place. The mudguard was painted with Tamiya Satin Black before drybrushing it with Humbrol Dark Grey to bring out the detail. Once fixed firmly in place, a start was made on attaching the cabling, using as mentioned in the text, cables from an old Tamiya kit rather than the material supplied in the kit.

There is a wonderful degree of detail in this kit, all of which benefits from careful assembly and painting.
This is a very interesting version of the Spitfire; the floatplane variant which really changes the profile of the iconic fighter. The mouldings are short-run in style but carry good detail and the floats are massive, for 1:72. Kit comes with PE parts and resin engine air intake.

The forks have been assembled and fixed in place, again using a screw to provide an additional level of strength. Once again, Alclad II provided the finish for all of the metal parts, the front wheel and mudguard being once again sprayed with Zero paint. Note the brake disk; this was painted with Alclad II Dark Aluminium and Steel, Tamiya Smoke helping to pop the detail. A final drybrush with Games Workshop Mithril Silver added that final degree of sparkle.

that’s supplied to deal with the various cables and pipes that adorn the bike. Though nice and fine, the cables are supposed to fit over small pips that are moulded on the relevant parts, plugs, accelerator, brakes etc. Good idea, difficult to pull off. The tubing supplied has a very small diameter hole running through it that is at times, almost impossible to slip of the aforementioned
pips. Though I managed it in a couple of places, I gave up with the rest, electing instead to rob an old Tamiya bike kit for the tubing supplied in that, the resulting assembly being far easier to carry out. The kit is completed with the inclusion of a stunning decal sheet that is both perfectly printed and wonderfully detailed. The day-glo markings are also wonderfully vibrant,
A close-up of the rubber radiator hose. This was painted with Vallejo Flat Black and then detailed with German Grey and London Grey to create the look of a toughened, rubber hose.
A close-up of the front brake disc. The blue axle was created by overpainting the Alclad, with a thin layer of Tamiya Clear Blue. The tyre was carefully sanded and then rubbed with a Scotchbrite pad to remove the mould seam and create the illusion of a tyre that has been reasonably well-used!
The use of clear and black hoses certainly helps create the illusion of reality, as do the tiny decals that adorn many of the smaller details. Note the subtle weld-beads in this shot and the finesse possible from the use of Alclad’s finishing products.

All of the body panels were painted with a layer of Tamiya Superfine Surface Primer and then over sprayed with three or four layers of Zero Paints Pure Brilliant White. This was then masked off and the Orange panels sprayed with McLaren MP4 Red. After leaving it to dry overnight, the panels were checked over and then sprayed with Zero's 2 Pack Gloss Clear Coat, a thin key-coat followed by one single, heavy layer being needed to create that incredible gloss finish. The painted parts were then left to harden for a few days and then the decals applied, Daco’s setting solutions being used to help them snuggle down over the detail. A quick wash and rub-over with a soft cotton cloth and the parts were ready to be fixed in place.
matching perfectly, the colours use to paint the bike. The instructions are explicit when it comes to painting instructions with not a single piece being omitted from the various steps illustrated. This is carried over on to completed painting and decalling pages, where everything is well explained and easy to follow.
Zero paints: a different approach
From the off, I knew that this model would need a perfect finish and so from the off I decided to have a go at using Zero’s range of paints and their 2K clear coat, all of which would need to care to apply and precautions when doing so. Being lacquers,
these paints need to be sprayed, preferably within a well-ventilated spray booth. This is particularly necessary for the 2K clear. This is a catalysing paint in which to mix a clear finish with a catalyst and then thin it ready to be airbrushed. Unlike normal paints, these dry using a chemical reaction rather
than drying through the input of air and so you need to take precautions so that you don’t breath them in: rubber gloves, a well-fitting spray mask and the aforementioned spray booth, being minimum requirements. That said, the paints that I used are all designed specifically for hobby use and by

precautions to the letter – as described on the Hiroboy website – you should not have too many problems. When spraying such small amounts, I was assured that they could be used safely. I was happy to do this and felt no adverse effects whatsoever - had I done, I wouldn't be using them! Also, my workshop is away from the house and so I ran no risk of these materials affecting my family. The colours themselves were simple, single-part Zero acrylics, only the clear being two-pack. Taking sensible precautions, using the correct safety equipment the results of using these paints is incredible, the finish you see here being the result of a single application of the 2K and no polishing – amazing eh?
With tidy paintwork the massive front brakes and their hardware can look superb. Note subtle shading on the disc.
THIS MONTH’S FEATURE…
Over these few pages, you’ll find a collection of photographs of this model under construction with some detailed notes on the various stages through which I went through to complete each aspect of the model’s construction and painting. It’s by no means exhaustive, but I think the images will give you a very good idea of what you can expect from one of these bike kits and how much fun you can have putting together the myriad, tiny pieces and then painting the results! This then is Hasegawa’s 1:12 YZR500 – we hope you like it! ●

Moebius’s 1:32 kit is an all new tooling and incorporates some very nice detail while keeping the model’s overall complexity to a sensible level. It appears to be a significant advance over the older Revell kit in terms of detail refinement although to be fair, the Revell offering is still a pretty good kit. Moebius have created a very buildable model of a great-looking ship and it comes with two styles of decal for either the miniature prop or the full-sized filming set ship. MN

BMW M3 DTM 2012 ‘MARTIN TOMCZYK’ From good model shops. www.revell.de/en SCALE; 1:24 • MATERIALS; IM, CP, SVT, WS • KIT NUMBER; 07082 It’s great to see Revell continuing with their release program of DTM cars and the two latest depict a pair of BMW M3s from the 2012 season. The two cars use fundamentally the same mouldings so it’s their liveries that give them strikingly different appearances. Internally, the cars are very well detailed; sparse like the real thing but will all the major structures. A decent replica of the engine is included and this can be observed on the finished model thanks to a removable front bonnet/wheel-arch moulding. The decals are glossy, well printed and come with carbon-fibre effect panels for the wing and other aero parts. The second kit is the ‘Bruno Spengler’ which has a satin black finish (kit no.07178). RED BULL RACING RB8 ‘SEBASTIAN VETTEL’ From good model shops. www.revell.de/en SCALE; 1:24 • MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS • KIT NUMBER; 07074 As well as DTMs, Revell are putting out some great Formula 1 kits too and reasonably up to date too; a pair from the 2012 season. The Red Bull RB8 is the car in question and both Vettel’s (kit no.07074) and Mark Webber’s (kit no.07075). Three options each are offered for both models; Vettel’s can represent the car as it appeared at the Bahrain, German and Indian GPs and Webber’s comes with options for the Australian, Monaco and Indian GPs. The kits come with partial replicas of engines plus air intakes and there are optional parts for the rear wing uprights. Overall, these are excellent replicas of the 2012 Red Bulls and with some TLC can look very good indeed. MN

US UTILITY TRUCK M151A1 ‘VIETNAM WAR’, M151A2 ‘GRENADA 1983’ From good model shops. www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:35 • MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBERS; ‘A1; 35334, ‘A2; 35332 Tamiya have undertaken a significant re-work of the ‘80s 1:35 Ford MUTT, backdating it to an early variant (M151A1) as would have served in the Vietnam War. Newly tooled parts are now supplied for swing-axle rear suspension and the body now has the simpler, early-pattern ‘flat’ front wings (with indicator lights on top) and the grille has been revised to incorporate blackout lights. The rear plate is a new part, now having rear lights that are appropriate for the ‘A1 and the rear wheel openings can be built with straight rear edges. The windscreen has been revised to include the central strut and the correct, pneumatic wiper-motors are represented. The kit also comes with a newly moulded canvas top and decals to build either a US Army or USMC vehicle. The M151A2 is released in pretty much its original form but now comes with a sprue carrying an extra two figures, plus folding bed, bags, ammunition and M2 HMG mount; ideal to go with the Gama Goat. The kits are cast impeccably in grey resin and both come with complete fightingcompartment interiors and main gun breeches, which can be viewed through the pair of large roof hatch apertures. The tracks are individual link in style and will need careful assembly, perhaps using PVA glue. Detail throughout is fantastic and the kits will build into gorgeous replicas of this low-slung Italian version of the StuG.

F-102A CASE XX www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE; 1:72 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; DS-005 Meng’s second version of the sleek Convair F-102A Delta Dagger is the ‘Case XX’ version which incorporated numerous improvements over the ‘Case X’ such as an autopilot, fire control computer and infrared search system, but the distinguishing feature of the Case XX was the curled-down wingtip; straight on the Case X. This feature has been faithfully reproduced by Meng, along with the angled outer edge of the aileron. Detail throughout the kit is fantastic and if you add Eduard’s photo-etched details it can really shine.
Case XX details have been correctly incorporated in this new release What’s not to love about this classic CenturySeries fighter?

ATF DINGO 2GE A2 PATSI From good model shops. www.revell.de/en SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS KIT NUMBER; 03233 The ATF Dingo could hardly be called good looking, but it has a brutish charm that works well in kit form. Revell have done a good job with this model, providing it with an engine (well, the bottom twothirds), an element-by-element chassis, full drive-train and an impressive cabin interior which can be seen thanks to individual crew doors. The kit is moulded in Revell’s standard and rather yucky dark green plastic (mid-grey would be better) but the detail is all there and the model will build into an imposing model of this Bundeswehr battle bus.
Comprehensively detailed inside and out and very up to date Vinyl tyres are tricky to add flat spots to; DEF Models might oblige with a set of sagged resin replacements
KRAZ-214B From good model shops. www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS KIT NUMBER; 804 The massive KrAZ 214 truck was made in the mid/late 1950s to serve the Russian armed forces and it went on to become a workhorse for many other nations, including Czechoslovakia, Cuba, Poland, Hungary, Egypt and North Vietnam. This new kit from Ukrainian manufacturer Roden does a good job of capturing the truck’s bulky profile and comes with extensive engine and chassis detail plus a decent cabin interior. The tyres are in vinyl but are well detailed and just a fine mould seam. The cargo deck floor is marred by some sink marks so you’ll need to add plenty of stowage or construct a tarpaulin cover.

US MRAPS IN ACTION
JOHN ADAMS-GRAF, SQUADRON SIGNAL PUBLICATIONS • ISBN 978-0-89747-737-6 From good book sellers. For more info; www.adhbooks.com There is currently a plethora of MRAP (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicles in US service and it’s easy to get confused as to which is which, and what they do. This new ‘In Action’ from respected US author John Adams-Graf goes a long way to clear up the confusion and is a great help to modellers wishing to construct a scale miniature. 225+ colour photos feature in this soft-backed production, showing us in detail all the main MRAPs in current and recent usage; Buffalo, Caiman, Cougar, Husky, MATV, MaxxPro, RG-31, RG-33 plus the early-deployed M1117 ASV. The excellent colour photography and detailed captions provide the reader with a clear overview of the types and also offer the modeller some useful detailing cues, although for more detailed references on specific vehicles, you’ll need to find other sources. GAMA GOAT DETAIL IN ACTION
DAVID DOYLE, SQUADRON SIGNAL PUBLICATIONS • ISBN 978-0-89747-735-2 From good book sellers. For more info; www.adhbooks.com We have another feature on the quirky M561 Gama Goat this issue and even though it was an unfamiliar vehicle to many modellers when first announced by Tamiya last year, it has lots of charisma which is making for a popular little kit. In this new soft-cover, eighty-four page production from US author David Doyle, we are presented with the ideal combination of archival and in-action photographs (143 vintage colour and black-andwhite photos, including Grenada 1983) plus Doyle’s thorough and clear walk-around imagery which brings us pretty much every aspect of the machine, inside and out. Particularly interesting are the eleven photographs of the ‘FAAR’ (Forward Area Alerting Radar) version which was a lightweight radar system based on the Goat’s chassis; it would make a fabulous conversion project for an ambitious modeller. Highly recommended. MN

MAGACH TANKS OF THE IDF, MAGACH 1 & 2 VOLUME 1
DR ROBERT MANASHEROB, SABINGAMARTIN PUBLICATIONS • ISBN 978-0-9841437-9-5 Available now, from; www.aviationbookcentre.com The story of the M48 tank in Israeli service is, as you might imagine, a convoluted and fascinating one, given the intense political sensitivity of the region and the wider ramifications of buying main battle tanks from the USA. Thus, when Israel wanted to upgrade its tank fleet and the American M48 Patton was chosen, the vehicles were actually ‘obsolete’ ex-West German M48A1 machines that were to be secretly upgraded to ‘A3 configuration in Italy and shipped – with equal clandestinity – via the Mediterranean to Israel. This extraordinary tale is told in detail by the author in this new production, which – as well as being a superb modelling reference – is a great read too. The story of the IDF’s M48 is told in absorbing detail through the use of contemporary photos, scale drawings, photographic walk-arounds and excellent colour illustrations and it makes for a very complete publication. MN
TRAIN HARD – FIGHT EASY, IDF ARMOR SERIES NO.2
OFER ZIDON, NISSIM TZUKDUIAN, WIZARD PUBLICATIONS • ISBN 978-965-90757-2-0 Available now, from; www.aviationbookcentre.com In this ninety-two page softback production, we are treated to some extraordinary images of the advanced training techniques used by the Israeli Defence Force which have been developed by them in response to the specific types of small, localised combat actions encountered in the region. The paper and print are of very high quality here, allowing the exceptional photographs to really shine and reveal their detail. The Merkava MBT, Namer APC, M113, HUMVEE, M-109 Doher, Puma APC and the mighty D9R Doobi dozer plus a smattering of helicopters and aircraft are shown on exercise in realistic scenarios, all great stuff for modelling references; informative captions tell us what we're looking at. Particularly interesting is the section at the back showing a specialised variant of the HUMVEE, fitted out as a T-72 with a fibreglass turret, fake body parts and even rear fuel drums. It looks very odd indeed and would make a fabulous 1:35 conversion set! MN
MARDER II PANZERJÄGER II FÜR 7.5CM PAK 40/2 (SD.KFZ.131), NUTS & BOLTS VOLUME 31
J BASCHIN, M BLOCK • Available now, from; www.historexagents.com Volume 31 of this unique and irreplaceable book series focuses on the Marder II Sd.Kfz.131, as based on the standard PzII hull/chassis and as with each preceding edition, N&B gives all you could ever want (and more) on the subject. From the introductory 100+ page section of wartime images of the vehicles in action from Russia to Europe, in every conceivable camouflage scheme. Following this we have scale drawings, colour profiles and extensive walk-arounds of preserved examples showing details – inside and out – which are not readily on view within wartime photos. All this is topped off with a modellers' section, making this another unmissable volume in the N&B series; it's unlikely you'll find a more detailed reference source. MN

The Editor’s Page... REVELL ‘SPACESHIPTWO’ AND ‘WHITEKNIGHTTWO MOTHERSHIP EVE’
FANCY A SPACEFLIGHT? We must doff our collective modeller’s caps to Revell, who, despite the general predilection of model companies to release kits of mainstream subjects to keep sales buoyant, still come up with something truly unusual from time to time. This is certainly the case with their new 1:144 kit of the ‘SpaceShipTwo’ and ‘WhiteKnightTwo Mothership Eve’ (the latter named after Richard Branson’s mother), a superb miniature replica of Virgin Galactic’s spacecraft and its launch vehicle. Even if models of commercial spacecraft aren’t your thing, this release is one of those must-have models, if only for its historical significance as a kit of potentially the first ever passengercarrying spacecraft – and it’s also a really nice model too! I measured the wingspan of the WhiteKnightTwo at 296mm, so it builds into the ideal size and even though it’s supposed to be brand-spanking new and shiny, I don’t think anyone would mind if there was the slightest hint of panel-line shading applied to the kit’s surface detail, just to give it a little life... Another quirky – and therefore cool – kit from Revell, with some nice detail too. www.revell.de/en See you again on February 20th! editor@tamiyamodelmagazine.com Revell’s Virgin Galactic kit is executed in the style of an airliner model, with very fine air (space) frame detail and windows that fit from within the fuselage.
