Short about – Bronze Bronze is a common name for various number of cobber alloys mostly with tin and some with lead, nickel, zinc, aluminum and other metals. Distinguishing is normally made between brass, a cobber-zinc alloy and bronze which includes all other types of copper alloys but the term is also occasionally used for certain brass alloys. Most common bronze alloys are tin-bronze (CuSn), alu-bronze (CuAlNiFe), lead-tin-bronze (CuSnPb) and red bronze RG7 also named cast bronze. Tin-bronze is the oldest used group of copper alloys. With a content of 5-25% of tin the metal was much easier to cast than pure cobber and at the same time both stronger and harder – and easier to work with. Bronze with a content of 5-8 % of tin could further more be processed and cured during forging. Tin-bronze become useful for tools and weapons and have given the name for the Bronze Age. Sometimes also a small amount of lead is added to make the melted bronze flow better during casting. Rolled and Cast bronze are now used where there is a need for hardness and strength, corrosion resistance, non-magnetic properties, wear resistance, or a combinations of these. Lead bronze is used in anti-friction bearings. A lot of marine and offshore equipment is made of bronze due to the corrosion resistance. Many coins is made from Alu-Bronze, which looks almost like gold. (92 % cobber, 6 % aluminum, 2 % tin) while other coins are made of tin-bronze (97 % cubber, 2,5 % zinc and 0,5 % tin).

Others

High strength and corrosion resistance for the most anfuous marine applications. Pipe fittings and flanges in chemical engineering.

Seawater handling components. propellers.

For highly stressed components in corrosive environments where high wear and shock loads may be encountered. Pumps. bearings. tools. bushings. housings

Resists tarnishing. Building and decorative components.

Leaded tin bronzes whose plasticity increases with lead content for bearings when some measure of plasticity is required and for when there is a risk of scoring mating materials

Leaded gunmetals giving good corrosion resistance with moderate strength and good castability. Applications include pumps valves and bearings.

For gears and general bearing applications offering higher corrosion/erosion resistance than gunmetals. The lead in CC482K gives improved machinability and the nickel in CC484K increases strength and hardness.
