PRESENTATION

« My hatred of problems is proportional to my fascination with solutions » Metalobil takes place as a free spirit in the fields of environmental design, layout, scenography, furniture and graphic engineering. Matthieu Lebot, architect, and Freddy Bernard, visual artist, founded the structure in 2004. They bring together the complementarity of a rigorous know-how and a strong creativity. In perpetual cerebration, Metalobil takes a malicious delight in making aesthetics propositions and in developing singular techniques. Thusly dynamics and ludic facilities are built. They command an unheard and learned lecture of their environment.

ACTIVITIES

Either draughtsmen, or designers, or manufacturers, our productions are systems enriching the landscape and the architecture. Metalobil consists of a research department and a workshop. Going by the name of «design engineering», this coexistence enables us to create, design and manufacture unique objects in the field of environmental design: microarchitectures, poetical machines, works of art, linings, special layouts, staircases, furniture, events scenography, exhibitions scenography, commercial stands, graphic engineering, signage systems, etc. Thusly Metalobil supports its prescribers (architects, artists, landscapers, promoters, private individuals, companies, territorial agencies, etc.) in implementing their projects: from definition of their needs, to the end of installation.

The furniture lays, stretches out, becomes distorted, adopting the shape of the salon & bodies. It is transformed sometimes in bench or bunk, sometimes in alcove for stereo system and video equipment. Flexible slabs that are punched and backlighted upholster the walls and the ceiling composing a moucharaby of lust images.

This playground is located in the city-center of Nantes, in front of the castle «Château des Ducs de Bretagne». The dragon is made of locust and chestnut trees, a garden is suspended over its backbone, a misting system is settled into its nostrils, its tongue is a slide, and children run into the nets under its belly. Both absurd and poetic, a fountain reveals the river rhythm. Hanged on the embankment, it rings every six hours the ebb tide, the flood tide, the ebb tideâ&#x20AC;¦ But here, the ringing is a powerful and spectacular water jet that stops only when the tide is high. The entity «Creation Area» knew they were going to settle in this building for a little while. We invented a layout they will just have to dismantle when moving in their new building, just like Lego... This invention has been patented. It’s made of modules (multiple of 60 cm) with various fonctionnalities (insulating, acoustic, windows, shelves, billboards, etc.), attached together with staples we manufactured ourselves.

For this spa we created the entrance hall (with its entrance desk), the column of the pool and the cladding of the hammam and sauna area. Everything is made of Rattan and Krion.

The chapel Corneille is renovated to become an auditorium. Metalobil implemented a huge sphere hung on the ceiling, with one side used as a chandelier (400 bulbs) and the other side as a mirror (fish eye effect). The sphere is mecanic and can be put on both sides. Moreover it has inside an acoustic lens to reverberate the sound. We also manufactured the mobile scene, the acoustic baffles, and few smaller chandeliers.

Japaneese shop Mark’Style Tokyo moves in Paris. This mechanical assembly system, requiring no nails or screws, using instead a complex version of a mortise-andtenon joint, draws on and adapts traditional Japanese wood joinery techniques. The system employs an innovative type of wood wedge, developed specifically for this project in collaboration with a team of design engineers at Métalobil, used with the wood planks to fix their positions at each shelf height

Niigata is a twinned city of Nantes. To celebrate their union birthday, Tetrarc and Metalobil cocreated the scenography of an exhibition about the west side of France, and specifically the city of Nantes. The exhibition takes place in Japan, it’s an invitation for a sensual immersion. Huge coloured columns full of water expose images of the city, those lasts are created thanks to special movements of water driven by little machines installed inside each of the column. A soundtrack gathers noises and rumblings of the city. A wall is made out of 1 547 canned food. To pay hommage to the hospitality of our hosts, we put inside each can a gift from our region (LU biscuits, lily of the valley perfume, poetry written by Jean Rouaud, Waterman pencils, etc.). When spectators take an offering, an image backlit appears. Altogether they will constitute a huge puzzle of our agglomeration aerial view.
