Rambling Along the Metaphysical Path

by Georgia E. Warren Publisher, Metaphysical Times

Poetry We now publish poems in the Metaphysical Times, but when I was “the Kid” I did not like poetry. I did not like nursery rhymes. I thought nursery rhymes were “stupid.” I cried, or as my brother Jim said, “blatted” because I felt so very bad for Old Mother Hubbard’s dog, and when I found out that they were talking about Jack’s head when they said he “broke his crown,” it was just all over. I would not listen to any more rhymes. They tried to make them sound cute by having sing-songy rhymes with such very sad stories. My mother gave up and decided to read Moby Dick to me at bedtime. She didn’t think I really understood the book, but I made her read chapter 17 so often that I can still remember it almost word for word. I took it as a little kid “sign” that fiction was “good” and “poetry” (or rhyme) was just plain “bad.” Time went on and I finally was old enough to go to school, I started school in the last of the one-room school houses in Oswego county. It was also what I considered an unpleasant place to be. It was heated with a woodstove in the winter, we had to go through a covered walkway to an outhouse and there were two students to every desk. I quickly learned in the first few weeks of school that I was wrong, fiction could be “bad” as well. I quite distinctly remember reading “Dick and Jane.” It was, in my child’s vernacular, so “stupid” that when the teacher said to the class “read as far as you can then pass the book on to your neighbor,” I just couldn’t stand it and when it came to my turn, I just sat there with that mean-looking “the Kid” face on and read the whole thing to the end so we wouldn’t have to deal with it any longer. The teacher was not pleased. Except for the big kids in the same room. They all thought I was funny and especially funny when I read that “stupid” book to the end and I told the teacher that “I just wanted us to get it over and read something else.” Okay, we will flash forward three LONG years with me suffering at the one-room school house and the teacher leaving me completely to my own resources. My mother worked with the centralized school board to get the one-room school shut down by making them have a meeting there on a cold winter’s evening, so they could see that the place wasn’t all that “quaint.” I liked to read. Fiction. In third grade I had the best teacher that I have ever had in my life. No teacher in high school, college, graduate school, came close to this teacher. The centralized school we all were sent to thought I was what was then called “retarded.” When I wrote anything it was looked at as scribbling, plus, I had learned better from the teacher at the one-room school house not to talk. Not to talk at all. This teacher somehow one day noticed I was not scribbling but writing mirrored letters backward from right to left instead of left to right. She took me to the lavatory and showed me in the mirror what I was doing. I decided right then I could talk to her, I told her that that I was left handed and if I wrote my way my paper wouldn’t get dirty. She told me if I wrote that way nobody else could read it. I said that my big brother Freddy could. She explained secret writing and that I could keep writing like that to him but for the rest of the world I should just lift my wrist up a little and write like other people. I said “okay” and did. But, I said, I won’t write poems. “They’re stupid.” The next day, teacher brought in two poems. She stared right at me and read them to the class. One of them was In Just”1 by E. E. Cummings man and the other was “The Hollow Men”2 by T. S. Eliot. I was in love. I was in love with poetry. I understood right then and there that it could be beautiful, meaningful, and DID NOT NEED TO RHYME.

My third grade teacher was the best teacher I ever had. Without her I very well might have ended up in a special school for learning disabled children and hating poetry at the same time. I can’t remember her name. One day we all had to go to “assembly.” A whole bunch of teachers had to kneel on the stage in the auditorium. The principal, walked around and told them that their skirts must reach the floor and if they did not, they needed to go home and change them. My teacher was one of them whose skirt didn’t quite reach the floor. It wasn’t way short, only a little bit didn’t reach the floor. She would NOT go home and change her clothes. She did go home though. They fired her. I guess I learned more from her than how to write so regular people could read it.I learned to be a little fiesty now and then and to stand up for what I believe even if it cost me something. I truly do appreciate good poetry and am proud to have it in our magazine, even if sometimes it does rhyme. I thank you unnamed teacher. I hope you found a school that appreciated you. Walter the Catfish By Oren Pierce B.A., B.S., M.S.G. A loose family of out-grown teddy bears and a few other abandoned companion animals lived together in an old, archtop trunk of cast-off clothing, out-grown Halloween costumes, and out-of-work toys. The house-humans were hardly ever home, and Oren Pierce, the man who looked after the house in their absence, always left the radio on, tuned to a chatty public-radio station so the place would seem humanly inhabited. The trunk itself was always held partly open by an old shoe jammed near the hinges,

Metaphysical Times

which enabled the bears to crawl in or out to sleep (which is what a Trunkbear does most of the time) or to lounge about listening to the radio. Because most of the Trunk Bears had mouths sewn shut, they were not much for talking, but they were very intent listeners. Their favorite radio programs were “Car Talk” and the local weather report. One storm-dark evening, the Trunkbears were listening to a radio discussion of Global Warming, Weird Weather Patterns, and Species Extinction, as a slurry of rain and snow splattered against the glass door to the deck of the little house.

hoeing his beans when he was showered upon by a school of Mackerel. The usual explanation given for such events is that the school of Mackerel or Sardines had been picked up and delivered by a Water Spout In fact, powerful Water Spouts are known to occur on the widest part of Cayuga Lake where this incident took place. But, whether this particular fish was picked up by hydroclones, dropped from a plane, or shot from a cannon, Nowella (who, unlike the other Trunkbears, was well acquainted with weather) could not bear to leave this rudely transported fish out in that freezing rain.

And then, SPLAT, the fish hit the door.

We are speaking here of a large fish. A large Catfish: its fleshy whiskers flattened against the glass for a moment … a moment long enough that Nowella the Bear and the larger of the two Raccoons had time to rush to the door and watch as the fish slithered to the deck, and lay there twitching.

Such things happen. Occasionally you read about someone like the farmer in New South Wales, who had been

Oneil the Independent Hand helped Nowella slide the door open, then the two of them and Big Coon, joined by Little Wooly Bear, grabbing the fish by its whiskers and fins, and dragged it over the threshold into the house, where a few of the braver Bears each grabbed a whisker or a

fin and helped pull the Catfish (which was longer than two or three cats) across the floor, following Nowella into the little bathroom, and right to the shower stall.

That group effort of understanding and kindness was the salvation of Walter. Not only was Walter able to survive in the merely moist bathroom; he was content there.

From her extensive fishing experience, Nowella knew that Catfish differ from most other fishes, as do frogs and certain other amphibians, in that they can, to some extent, respire through the permeable membrane of their skin. Surely no Bear can breathe through its very thick, hairy skin, and other than the limited example of Oneil the independent hand, there are only a few documented humans (or human parts) with that talent, mostly in upper Ganges lowlands of India. But to remain effective out of water, Catfish skin, unlike Oneil’s adapted epidermis, needs to stay moist, and Nowella well knew that the showerhead had a chronic drip.

As a matter of fact, he was unwilling for an extended time to even leave that room. He spent a whole week - or maybe it was a month - in the bathroom before he ever ventured out, and during that month in the bathroom , as Walter became somewhat acclimated to life out in the air, he grew aware of the sounds in the air. The sounds were voices. it was the voices that finally drew him out. He would eventually become almost one of the Trunkbears, although something of an out-lier, and he would never fully understand what any of them or the radio were talking about, nor would any of them ever remember when or why they started calling him “Walter.”

Metaphysical Times Thirty second in a continuing series by Sue-Ryn

So Far, So Good Living, loving and working with animals has reached new levels of experience this summer. Baby season burst upon us after a long wet spring again and proceeded pretty much non-stop. A steady caravan of critters came and went. We got to spend time with adorable baby owls, grouchy gulls, an assortment of songbirds – especially robins and waxwings, some hilarious woodchucks who all went to live at a friends farm (and yes, we are still friends), and our first time ever incredibly soft, cuddly, and generally charming muskrat baby who earned the name “Rattyroo”. About the time Rattyroo got to go live near our friend Jim in Eel Bay, the first second litter squirrel orphan arrived. As of this writing there are still twelve squirrels growing towards release. After rearing twenty second litter squirrels a few years ago I know I said,” never again”, but when the “second litter” flood started one rehabber who would have helped had moved out of state and the other had an seriously ill spouse, so they all came to grow up with us. Their arrival also occurred about the time that our elderly domestic companions made their departure within the same twenty four hours. We knew they would be leaving, but didn't expect it so soon, or simultaneously. Maybe the universe knew we needed to be kept busy and distracted? When a fellow rehabber got injured and needed placement for nine second litter squirrels, I was willing to take them, hoping some would be the same age as the singleton in residence. Three were, though they didn't survive. Since like attracts like, we began to get a few more second litter babies as storms blew trees and nests down, and soon there were four new siblings for the singleton. We decided at some point we needed some kind of new pet. Friends assured us it would help. We were and are still grieving, but also lonesome for domestic animal comfort. We had long conversations about who to look for first – cat or dog. We would sneak peaks at rescue websites late at night, then confess and share who we saw. Eventually, we decided we needed to find a dog first, because some one needed to get the yard rabbits to back off from the gardens a little. We've pretty much decided any future cats will be indoor kitties after our wonderful experience s with an eleven year old named Lovey.

We tend to go for Border Collie mixes, because they are smart, trainable, and usually grasp the concept of “protecting the caged ones” fairly easily. We've also had two really wonderful Border Collie mixes since we've been together. There was a Border Collie listed in a Watertown shelter and I called about her. Two and a half years old and given up because “she didn't get along with the other dogs in the household”. That could have been for many reasons; bad parenting, lack of routine, aggressive siblings, or just personal preference. Our continued search took us back to our favorite shelter up in St. Lawrence county. It's small, very neat, and the animals have wonderful volunteers looking after them. They had a cute Red Heeler mix listed on their site, along with other dogs. When we went to see them in person, Roxie the Red Heeler spent most of our visit three feet off the ground enthusiastically barking and wagging and letting us know she'd be happy to come home with us. While we thought she was adorable, we could tell her energy level would be too high to harmonize with all the other things we have to pay attention to in our lives. We visited a few others and the Director accidentally brought us a dog named Delilah who'd been out for a walk on our first pass through. I'd actually been looking at a dog named Danica, who turned out to be young and still growing, probably into a large girl if her parentage was any indicator. The Director then convinced us we should check Delilah out and maybe take her for a walk, so we did. Delilah was incredibly good on the leash and very calm and attentive to our cues...stopping to visit other dogs when we did and moving in whatever direction we went without hesitation or resistance. She was unperturbed by barking ankle-biter types or large lunging types or pretty much anything else. She was a really cool customer. What's more, every volunteer we ran into had nothing but kind words about her – she seemed to be a special favorite to everyone. We talked about her all the way home. When I called to check on the Border Collie in Watertown, she had a few folks waiting in line to take her home. I wish that for any sheltered dog. I'm sure it's as confusing for them as for any other creature when their lives take a turn and they end up behind bars. I know any time anyone gets switched to a new cage in our care they go through some upheaval no matter how

Metaphysical Times

Fall 2015 • Page 10

gradual or smooth I try to make the transition. Animals who have shared a bond with someone must find it really sorrowful Delilah was not who we were looking for. She is only a little smaller than our old love, Chloe and we'd thought smaller would be easier on us as we age. She was listed as a Chocolate Lab mix, though mixed with whom is still a good question. She has black spots on her tongue and gums like a Chow, and beautiful expressive Great Dane-like ears, and a profile that could be Boxer or Pitt or “all-of-the-above”. Her coloring goes to darker points at her face and feet like Siamese cat, only in darker shades of brown. For an eight year old she is in terrific shape, and I'm hoping keeping her that way helps me get back into more walking and hiking. She has coppery colored eyes and a lethal tail that wags destructively whenever she's happy about something. She is very responsive to our commands considering we haven't known her for very long, and that those commands usually involve caged critters in the back yard – though there's been no lunging or barking. The only person she has barked at so far is the FedEx man. We spend as much time with her as we can and look forward to learning who she is under all that calm. We know her family fell apart and that she was at the shelter for about three months and was starting to “close down”. We know she would not have been picked as a pet by most people due to her age and seeming lack of enthusiasm. We know she didn't meet any of our supposed requirements, but we are really glad Delilah came home to live with us. So far, so good.

Reiki: Just The Facts

Part XII: Reiki, Healing Stones & Rabbits

By Don Brennan

About 8 years ago, I wanted to buy a piece of Green Apophyllite for healing work, and also for communicating with nature. I expected to purchase a simple, small green stone. But when I glanced at the specimens available at Two Hawks Gallery, I immediately locked in on a piece with Apophyllite clusters harmoniously intertwined with Calcite, all still attached to the matrix from which they grew. Within the Calcite formations, I sensed the energy of fairies and thought of Coleen Shaughnessy, the fairy author and artist. Some of the Calcite formations even looked like fairies. I knew this was the stone for me, even though it was such a fragile, delicate piece. It had within it the communities of both the nature kingdom and the fairy kingdom on a heart/shield shape, making it perfect for healing the heart and nurturing the emotions. Last year, I finally had a chance to show it to Coleen at the Canastota fair. Her eyes widened as she held it and said, “This is giving me chills. There’s not just one in there. There are lots of them!” When I first started working with this stone, it didn’t seem ready for handson healing work. So I used it only on myself occasionally. Mostly I used it for meditating with and within nature and

Fall 2015 • Page 12 in creating sacred space filled with loving, Reiki healing energy for all creatures to enjoy. It also helped make communication with animals a little easier. One afternoon, I noticed a rabbit enjoying the clover in the back yard. I began sending Reiki into the space and when the rabbit began to take in some Reiki, I directed my healing to her. I also sent the message to enjoy the yard now because I was going to mow the grass a little later. And then I heard, very clearly, “Oh, don’t cut the grass!” So I compromised and left it wild around the edges. A couple days later, as I was meditating and creating sacred space, this same rabbit came into the yard. Happy to see her and to share Reiki with her, I closed my eyes and returned to the deep bliss. Moments later, I opened my eyes and there were two of them, just staring at each other. And then they started performing the bunny hop-mating dance, which I had never seen before. Finally, I got it. Rabbits like to nest in tall grass. She was telling me not to cut the grass because she was getting ready to make babies. Earlier this year, as I was planning my first Reiki Healing With Crystals class, I began to collect stones from all over the house to see what I had and what I might need. I picked up the Apophyllite and my heart was filled with a sweet, gentle nurturing energy. It was like two old friends reconnecting again and it told me that it now wanted to be more involved in my healing practice. So I’ve been working with it as guided and it has become one of my significant healing stones. It’s also a stone with a very distinct personality. I sense the individual consciousness of all the clusters, but collectively the stone seems to have the persona of a “lady” and sometimes, a “princess.” After volunteering to do more healing work, it hid from me while I was packing for GemWorld 2015. The only stone left

behind on the dining room buffet, it seemed like it was cowering beneath the protection of my Kwan Yin sculpture. “You little stinker,” I said out loud. And then I promised to be extra careful with it and to be very selective with the people I used it on. It turned out to be the perfect stone for a few individuals. One of the Reiki and Crystals classes got off to a very sad start, this summer. I was moving an easel and white board out to the garage where I found a dead baby rabbit. At first it scared the heck out of me, until I realized it was a rabbit. And then I was overcome with grief. The poor little creature had gotten trapped in the garage, alone, confused and afraid, until death brought it release. I love all animals, but I’m especially fond of rabbits. They’re such gentle creatures. I go out of my way to make them welcome in the yard. I know it wasn’t my fault that the baby rabbit got trapped in the garage, but I couldn’t stop blaming myself. That morning, I didn’t have much time to properly take care of its remains, but I thought of its mother. One of her babies had been missing for at least a couple days. I wanted her to have closure. So I moved the baby rabbit’s body to the far back where the mother would find it on her travels. Coincidentally, the animal theme kept coming up in that class. Two people who canceled out were grieving over the death of their pets. One student who practiced Reiki primarily with animals fell in love with the Apophyllite piece. So we placed it on her heart center during practice. That was the first class that the stone agreed to join for hands-on healing. The next morning, I charged the Apophyllite/Calcite stone with Reiki. Then I took a clear Quartz chip, programmed it with Reiki to have the vibration of the Apophyllite/Calcite piece, and filled it with Reiki, to sustain the healing, for all of

How to Have a Successful Spiritual Business!

Written and Sponsored by Cindy Griffith

You are educated in your field and ready to start your spiritual-based business. Congratulations, you have taken the first step toward living the life of your dreams. But now what? There are some initial considerations to ensure a successful venture. Whether you are just starting or have been in your spiritual business for years, it is important to follow your passion. You may be really good at hands on healing, yet love the part where you help people release the emotions that created the dis-ease in the first place. Or maybe you have been a massage therapist for years and are now more passionate about the aromatherapy product you use

Fall 2015 • Page 16 than doing the massage. Following your passion will show you what to specialize in. Your clients will feel your passion and be drawn to you because of it. It is equally important to consider how you will pay your bills. As a psychic for over 20 years, my passion lately has shifted toward teaching and writing. At this time, my financial success still comes from my psychic readings, so I haven’t stopped offering them while I begin to shift my marketing focus toward my new passion. It is important not to quit the day job before your new business can support both itself and you. If you are looking at your clients as your ticket to paying your rent, they will feel your lack of sincerity and won’t come back. Once you are secure in paying your bills, another consideration is focusing on why a prospective client would want to come to you over someone else offering the same service. Reflect on how you are different than others in your field. Here are a few things to consider. • Do you offer a service that is unique? • Do you have extra training? • Does your background give you insight into client’s issues or lives? • Did you use your service to heal or create harmony for yourself? • Do you offer something another provider does not? I.e. A recording, a free follow-up, etc.

Those are just a few things that might entice a client to work with you over someone else. Likewise, think about how your service will change or transform a person’s life. Why should someone want your service? Make a list of how your service will affect a person. Here are a few things to think. • How does your service affect the client’s body? • Does your service calm the mind and/or emotions? • How can you help with spiritual growth? • What will change in your client’s life after spending time with you? • What problem will your work help the client to solve? Most will find their work focuses on one thing, but the effects of their work offers other advantages. For example, a life coach may help a client move forward in his or her life, working more on the emotions and mind of the client, which then in turn creates a healthier body because of the reduced stress. Your client wants to have a shift in his or her life. Let them know how you can help. Although if your community does not understand what it is you do, no matter how special you are or how you can help them, they will not know they need your service. It is important to evaluate how your business is perceived in your

Metaphysical Times area. Do people respect what you do? I moved from a larger metropolitan area to a smaller community and was able to raise my prices because psychics were viewed as more valuable in the smaller community. Evaluating if your modality is well understood and, if not, educating your community is equally important. This can be done with free talks, blogs, articles, newsletters, and basic community outreach. These outlets allow you to teach about your service, what advantages you offer, and why someone wants to come to you. Remember, these are not infomercials, or hard marketing. It is important to educate, not suffocate with heavy marketing. Of course you will have promotional material available for them to take home with a coupon or a free sample. Further consideration, before getting started, is learning your demographics. It is important to know who is going to want to use your service. My demographics as a psychic is mostly women from the age of 30 to 70. My demographics as a spiritual development teacher in the US is mostly women from 40 - 65, yet when I teach or offer psychic sessions in Tokyo, Japan, it changes to men and women from 35-75. Knowing your demographics will help you to market to your audience. I wouldn’t advertise my psychic business in the US at a baseball game, yet I might in Tokyo.

Fall 2015 • Page 17 decisions are environment, price and professionalism. It can be hard to know what choices your prospective client will be presented with if you don’t experience what other practitioners are offering first hand. Paying a visit to another’s office, paying full price, and receiving a treatment, session, etc. is the best way to know what your prospective client will be offered. Paying full price, rather than bartering, ensures you experience what a potential client would. It is important, and ethical, not to copy who ever you visit, it is meant for you to understand your prospective client’s choices and support the practitioner. This is not spying. Connecting with others in your spiritual community and experiencing their services creates camaraderie, community and most important referrals.

others in your field as competition, it sets up a competitive energy. It is difficult for a spiritual-based business to thrive in a competitive environment. If you work with those in your community, you set up a supportive attitude that allows everyone to flourish. Remember, it is your attitude that makes your business a spiritual business, not your modality. You can be a lawyer, accountant, psychic, or shop owner. It doesn’t matter what you do as long as you are doing it with an open heart and with the goal to be of service. For more insight into creating a spiritual business, read my book, Grow Your Spiritual Business: Building a business in the Internet Age by Cindy Griffith and Lisa K. PhD, coming out Fall 2015.

This brings up the subject of supporting your spiritual community. If you want to have a successful Cindy Griffith, Psychic, Spiritual business, it is very important to be Development Teacher, Blogger, and Author of Soul Soothers: involved and supportive of your community. In a healthy spiritual Mini Meditations for Busy Lives is community, you will receive support excited about her new book, coauthored and referrals. MUSIC AND SPIRIT by Peter Wetherbee Peter Wetherbee is a musician. He has produced albums of spirit music from Haiti, the Philippines, and NYC, and written liner notes for various Gnawa and Jajouka music CDs. As label manager for Axiom/Island/ Polygram Records, he worked closely with Bill Laswell on spirit music releases from all over the world. He lives in Ithaca, NY, and his mind is controlled by his cat, Larry. peter_wetherbee@yahoo.com Musicians convert spirit energy into physical vibrations. There is energy running through and around us all the time, but most of us can’t perceive it until it comes in a form we can hear, smell, feel, see or taste. As antennae for the spirit energies, musicians simply perform the service of transducing the signals into the physical realm of sound waves by rebroadcasting the information through voices and instruments as vibrations. This article attempts to discuss Spirit Music in my personal experience, augmented by a variety of sources ranging from ancient mystical texts through the cutting-edge science of the modern world. Lately I have been in heaven because my drum guru, Nana Anim, brought an entire drumming and dance troupe from Ghana to Ithaca, where I live and have been studying drumming for several years. To sit in the middle of this group of master drummers, and be taken under their energy-rebroadcasting wings, is one of the greatest experiences of my life. Quite frankly, it feels like I am surrounded by angels, and each opportunity to drum with these young virtuosi is an opportunity to experience joy and a great uplifting of my spirit. Nana frequently admonishes me -- especially when learning complex new rhythms -- to relax and not think. The biggest obstacle to communing with spirit magic, of course, is the conscious “intellectual” mind, with all its relentless attempts to categorize, classify, and compare to previous events, and its clinging inability to “let go.” There is nothing intellectual about deep music, and in fact it is the ability to escape the noise of the conscious mind, and all of its inhibiting ego- and

fear-based chatter, that opens the somatic self to the magic of Spirit Music. Spirit Music is a loose umbrella under which I place music that brings ecstatic joy and/or release, or which catalyzes transcendent experience. And I use the word spirit intentionally loosely as well, because it seems to me that there are so many kinds of spirit energies. My Ghanaian angels claim, however, that it is all one god, in their case the Christian variety brought to West Africa by British missionaries. The Christians make a point of denying the validity of the pre-imperial spiritual beliefs and practices of West Africa, with particularly negative views of Voudou music’s pantheon of deities (similar to Greek mythology, in which each spirit has a unique personality and specialties). Much of this discrimination comes from suspicion of contemporary “Juju” practices, which are typically used for personal gain and to bring harm to others, but the Voudou traditions of West Africa (and of Haiti, where Voudou has been thoroughly syncretized with Catholicism) are based around the worship and celebration of many different types of specific spirits, and are, I believe, beautiful and elegant ways of praying and living. I have seen and heard various Voudou spirits manifested by drums, singing, and dancing in Haiti and elsewhere, and therefore tend to believe in a multiplicity of the spirits, although I am comfortable with the idea of a single universal God who encompasses all these things; discussion of quantum mechanics below tends to support the universal idea on fundamental levels as well. Somatic “perception” is the idea that the human body/spirit is capable of perceiving spirit information in non-conscious and even alternatesensory ways. My idea of somatic “understanding” is that the body can, for example, “hear” music without (or in addition to) the use of the ears, and that there is a lot more abstract connecting going on between our bodies and the spirits, most of which we are unaware of because of the inabilities of the conscious mind to grok such things. It is the goal of meditation in Buddhism and many other mystical and religious traditions, in particular as pertains to ideas of non-duality, which is to say non-polarized and freely transcendent ways of being. One of my favorite time signatures in West African drumming music is 6/8, which often allows grooves to exist concurrently in increments

Metaphysical Times of 3 and 4. The result is a fascinating kind of “float” in which polyrhythms simultaneously pulse in 3s and 4s, and the result is compelling and contagious. The magical swinging area between the two “feels” is much of my favorite music from West Africa and its diasporic manifestations, and is a completely non-intellectual process which demands specifically that the conscious mind lets go of the need to “track” the two simultaneous rhythms in order to groove on the composite abstract of the two. My friend Laura Lippie had the opportunity to jam with Gnawa Musicians in Morocco. The Gnawa music is deep trance music, often performed through a whole night, featuring a stringed bass instrument called the sintir. I asked Laura to describe the experience of being immersed in this music: The experience of being under a tent with 20 Gnawi is powerful, magical and completely unique. The power of the metal vibrations with the rhythmic coordination of a continuous “clack clack clack clack” where you won’t repose on the beat but in between the beats, means you are constantly in the sway of the vibrations, creating a fusion of emerging aspirations and transforming your psychic condition. The ways that Spirit Music is perceived and processed corresponds to elements of Taoist cosmology: Spirit Music is a portal into the perception and transmission of ideas about the cosmic flow around us, the nature of God, and the inter-connectedness of all things in the Universe. By examining the essential elements of Spirit Music – and exploring scientifically and metaphysically the mechanisms of its dissemination and flow – its transcendent implications are revealed as a window to deeper, inner, higher, wider, outer awareness. Water is a primary metaphor for sound wave phenomena. Ripples on a pond, waves on a beach, mountain streams and river deltas all create a metaphorical link to both Taoist notions of flow and the hard science view of waves and space resonance. This simple, flexible and resilient analogy between the respective properties of sound and water helps to familiarize us intuitively with some of the more complex ideas of and about Spirit Music. Water represents flow, waves, and even spirit in ancient Sufi sources in which the word “ma” figures centrally. Fritjof Capra’s “The Tao Of Physics” is a wonderful analysis and magical synthesis of various resonant levels connecting Taoism and quantum mechanics, and is the model and inspiration for many of the connections I make here in these areas. In this spirit, I dug up some heady scientific documents by a guy named Milo Wolff, a quantum mechanic specializing in the nature of atoms, specifically electron spin. I have excerpted below from his conclusions in a fascinating academic paper Wolff wrote called “The Physical Origin of Electron Spin – using quantum wave particle structure” (Technotran Press), which can be found in its complete form here: http://mwolff.tripod. com/body_spin.html. Electrons spinning are the essence of atoms, which are what we come down to when we try to break down ideas like matter and sound waves to their most fundamental. From Wolff:

Fall 2015 • Page 22 A UNIVERSE OF QUANTUM WAVES AND SPACE Although the origin of spin has been a fascinating problem of physics for sixty years, spin itself is not the important result. Instead, the most extraordinary conclusion of the wave electron structure is that the laws of physics and the structure of matter ultimately depend upon the waves from the total of matter in a universe. Every particle communicates its wave state with all other matter so that the particle structure, energy exchange, and the laws of physics are properties of the entire ensemble. This is the origin of Mach’s Principle. ...This structure settles a century old paradox of whether particles are waves or point-like bits of matter. They are wave structures in space. There is nothing but space. As Clifford speculated 100 years ago, matter is simply, “undulations in the fabric of space”. Joscelyn Godwin is a scholar at Rutgers University who has written a large body of literature about mystical elements in music throughout history. His book “Music, Mysticism, and Magic: A Sourcebook” (Arkana/Penguin, 1986) is a remarkable collection of translations (incredibly, most of the translations from disparate languages are by Godwin himself!) of ancient texts that range chronologically from Plato to Stockhausen, with excellent representation of Jewish, Sufi, and European mystics throughout the ages. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for anyone interested in a variety of perspectives on Spirit Music across the last three millennia. On the subject of waves, flow, electrons, water, and space resonance, consider Godwin’s comments on Celestial Harmonies. The idea of “Music Of The Spheres” originates in the 4th Century B.C. with Plato, whose “Myth of Er” Godwin calls the prototype of all the soul-journeys of Western Literature, with their oft-repeated theme of hearing celestial music made by the souls of the spheres...If we allow that these ‘spheres’ may represent not only the physical orbits of the planets, but also the powers of those planetary archetypes – the Mercurial, the Solar, etc. -- within the human soul itself, then the journey takes on a new meaning as an inner pilgrimage through the layers of the psyche to the divine center within, which is also the all-encompassing circumference of the spirit. Godwin also translates an extract of the Asclepius in Egyptian texts called the Corpus Hermeticum from the early centuries AD, which emphasizes another angle: that the understanding of sound extrapolates into transcendent understanding. For the true knowledge of music is nothing other than this: to know the ordering of all things and how the Divine Reason has distributed them; for this ordering of all separate things into one, achieved by skillful reason, makes the sweetest and truest harmony with the Divine Song. By exploring the nature of Spirit Music – as the warp and woof of God’s Fabric which manifest in and around sound – we find the elements which bring the “sweetest and truest harmony,” literally

Metaphysical Times and figuratively, with nature, reality, and the dimensions. The length and frequency of a wave are simple code that includes tools for describing rhythm, melody, and harmony – and by extension, the sensibilities of texture, timbre, resonance and tone. Logic might suggest that space, silence, or the respective level of “ambiance” becomes the “opposite” of each sound or characteristic. The less impact a given action has, the weaker the output of waves, and the higher the relative “silence” is. So there are increasing ratios between silence and the wave, and the only factor that is attenuated is the amount of energy (whatever that is – soul expression?). Trance music can be called a focused celebration of the space itself and its impact in connecting with Spirit. I like to use the ideas of Texture, Trance, and Space as three essential criteria by which to define Spirit Music; as building blocks to explain the nature, sensation and perception of Spirit Music, a lens through which to examine a large body of music, noise, natural and synthetic sounds. Today, with each technological leap in each of the primary media delivery formats [CDs, DVDs, Blu-Ray, and future hi-rez delivery vehicles] comes ever-rising thresholds to the qualities of textural sensations, trance experience, and spatial awareness. It is in the exploration of this conceptual triumvirate that we find much of the magic that has motivated musicians, shamans, artists, alchemists and listeners since the beginning of time. Godwin translates Iamblichus (3-4th Century Greek), who was interested in pagan rituals and how they could be incorporated into the Platonic/Pythagorean tradition: Pythagoras devised techniques for curing people by divinely contriving mixtures of certain diatonic, chromatic, and enharmonic melodies, through which he easily transferred and circularly led the passions of the soul in a contrary direction... he freed them from nocturnal heaviness, relaxation and torpor, through certain peculiar songs and modulations, produced either by simply striking the lyre, or employing the voice... he extended his ears, and fixed his intellect in the sublime symphonies of the world, he alone hearing and understanding, it appears, the universal harmony and consonance of the spheres, and the stars that are moved through them, and which

produce a fuller and more intense melody than any thing affected by mortal sounds. Godwin notes that apparently Pythagoras was able to attain a state of trance/vision, in which he would retain a memory of both music and moral teachings. This melody also was the result of dissimilar and variously differing sounds, celerities, magnitudes, and intervals, arranged with reference to each other in a certain most musical ration, and thus producing the most gentle, and at the same time variously beautiful motion and convolution... Sometimes, also, by musical sounds alone, unaccompanied with words, they healed the passions of the soul and certain disease, enchanting, as they say, in reality. And it is probable that from hence this name epode, I.e. enchantment, came to be generally used. The wildest and most cosmic interpretation of the somatic understanding

Fall 2015 • Page 23 of music might be that of Isaac Ben Solomon Ibn Sahula, 13th century Kabbalist and poet, in his commentary on the song of Solomon. According to Godwin, The personal experience of song [is] something which can be realized by the soul at various levels, the highest of them being that attained by Solomon and reflected in his Song of Songs. “Song” is here a metaphor for transcendent knowledge, though this does not discount the possibility that the experience of such knowledge may actually take musical form. Fellow Kabbalist Isaac Loeb Peretz Kabbalist had this to add, four centuries later, on the subject of transcendent somatic experience. Again via Godwin, Peretz is describing the act of “performing” somatic music, however, as opposed to “hearing” it: “The true, highest melody is that which is sung without any voice. It resounds in the interior of man, is vibrating in his heart and in all his limbs.” And then there’s the Sufi perspective. Ikhwan Al-Safa, of the Sufi Brethren of Purity (10th century), trying to reconcile the mysticism of the ancient philosophers with the Q’uran, had this to say: [Music] is entirely composed of spiritual substances which are the soul of the hearers, their effects also being entirely spiritual manifestations... Melodies and rhythms have the power of transporting the soul from one state to another and of transforming its character by making it pass from one extreme to another....the effects imprinted by the rhythms and melodies (naghamat) of the musician in the souls of hearers are different kinds. In the same way, the pleasure that the soul draws from these rhythms and melodies and the manner in which it enjoys them, are variable and divergent. The poetic dichotomy expressed here, between the ears and intellect and the body’s perception of the non-verbal, are yet another description of the profound possibilities of somatic perception. Interestingly, the more we root through the writings of the experts on Spirit Music throughout history, the more we find that reminds us of Wolff’s “spin” of the electron and Iamblichus’ reversing the rotation of the soul. Further Sufi explanations are provided via Godwin by Majd Al-Din Al-Ghazali (12thC.) on the subject of the predecessors to the famous whirling dervishes. Of particular interest to those exploring the mechanisms of trance triggers in music is the mention of holy sounds and words. Note also the completeness and casual confidence of this description of the process of entrancement and revelation: ...the combined sound [of the elements of a tambourine] is a reference to the appearance of the divine revelations and unrestricted knowledge by means of these realities in the hearts of the saints and the people of perfection...Dancing is a reference to the circling of the spirit round the cycle of existing things on account of receiving the effects of the unveilings and revelations; and this is the state of the Gnostic. The whirling is a reference to the spirit’s standing with Allah in its inner nature (sirr) and being (wujud), the circling of its look and thought,

Metaphysical Times and its penetrating the ranks of existing things. ...the sound Huwa [a holy and mystical Sufi/Islamic chant word] is penetration from the exterior to the interior and is joined to the heart; then the heart and the spirit are joyful by means of the variation of measured notes and by the number of the realities which come down upon the spirit in the ranks of existing things. So when the spirit follows the body in movement and the body follows the spirit in presence, light, and joy it is detached from the suppositions and imaginations, and the realities which are combined in the spirit penetrate the bodily powers. Godwin notes that Al-Ghazali’s references to “a world of lights and spirits which sama enables one to enter concern what the Iranian philosophers of a generation later would call Hurqalya, the “imaginal world” of Archetypal or Autonomous Images.” Autonomous is used in a slightly different way here yet nevertheless suggests, once again, somatic “perception.” Godwin’s discussion of Suhrawardi’s (12thc.) comments on Hurqalya – in the context of connecting Shiite Sufism with other ancient philosophies – is almost a textbook definition of transcendent somatic revelation: Hurqalya is the place of visions and theophanies, of Heavens and Hells, perceived by the Active or Creative Imagination. But far from being ‘imaginary,’ it is even more real than what the body senses perceive. Suhrawardi’s own writings include much discussion of different varieties of autonomous and transcendent sensory perception among holy men and visionaries. Perfect for summing up our discussions of the cosmic and somatic elements of Spirit Music, Suhrawardi’s statement brings it all home in simple and universal terms, even including a mention of the music of the planets: The suprasensory realities encountered by the prophets... appear to them like those delicate figures proceeding from the most refined art of the painters. On occasion they are shown as if in an enclosure; at other times the forms and figures appear suspended. Everything which is perceived in dreams – mountains, oceans, and continents, extraordinary voices, human personages – all these are so many figures and forms which are self-subsistent and need no substratum. The same is true of perfumes, colors, and flavors. How can the brain, or one of its cavities, contain the mountains and oceans seen in a dream, whether the dream be true or false, no matter how one conceives of, or explains, this capacity? ...The Celestial Spheres give out sounds which are not caused by anything existing in our sublunar world. Moreover, we have already proven that sound is something other than the undulation of air... In conclusion, I’d like to refer to the following excerpt from the Vimalakirti Nirdesa Sutra, as translated by Robert Thurman from the original 9th century Tibetan source. This segment ties together the Tao with a form of “scientific” logic, and pretty much sums it all up for me.

Fall 2015 • Page 24 The Bodhisattva Vidyuddeva declared, “‘Knowledge’ and ‘ignorance’ are dualistic. The natures of ignorance and knowledge are the same, for ignorance is undefined, incalculable, and beyond the sphere of thought. The realization of this is the entrance into non duality. The Bodhisattva Priyadarshama declared, “Matter itself is void. Voidness does not result from the destruction of matter, but the nature of matter is itself voidness. Therefore, to speak of voidness on the one hand, and of matter, or of sensation, or of intellect, or of motivation, or of consciousness on the other – is entirely dualistic. Voidness does not result from the destruction of consciousness, but the nature of consciousness is itself voidness... The Bodhisattva Pramati declared, “‘Eye’ and ‘form’ are dualistic. To understand the eye correctly, and not to have attachment, aversion, or confusion with regard to form – that is called ‘peace.’ Similarly, ‘ear’ and ‘sound’, ‘nose’ and ‘smell,’ ‘tongue’ and ‘taste,’ ‘body’ and ‘touch,’ and ‘mind’ and ‘phenomena’ – all are dualistic. But to know the mind, and to be neither attached, averse, nor confused with regard to phenomena – that is called ‘peace.’ To live in such peace is to enter into non duality.”

All Hallows Exchanging one shade of gray for another, made not of dawn or noon, this day is dog barks, the hum of solitary cars on a country road, the gurgle of plumbing. Nourished by the chill, withdrawn into shadows, I make coffee, feed the cats. Earth balances under burnt tomato vines. The yearling cat chases leaves, sniffs the air, his whole body curved. Birds smell the dry cold, migrate. Then when the winds mingle, women go off with the moon. Ghosts find seeds in their hair. ----- Mary Gilliland

ANNA IN THE FIRST PLACE

Peter Fortunato from the collage series by Peter Fortunato "I Want to Be Real (I Am)"

Metaphysical Times Kathy Wellford felt unsettled. She could almost see the word in quotes floating above her head as she made her way through the remaining audience and out the rear door of the auditorium. She looked back once over her shoulder toward the podium and the speaker, whom her imagination long ago had labeled “humanitarian.” Revising that on her mental screen, the letters were deleted one by one, and one by one, she retyped “bodhisattva.” Anna Ahlgren clearly qualified for that. Her efforts on behalf of widows and orphans in Tanzania, where she had risked her life in various ways over the past ten years, placed her in the ranks of the spiritual heroes. Nor did Anna think of herself as a bodhisattva, if she even knew what the term meant. Kathy was now reviewing the language of her own introduction from an hour earlier, which she had delivered at that same podium. She thought with some pride that she might well be called upon again in the future to introduce Anna to another appreciative audience, and so Kathy wanted to remember the revisions she would make to her speech. Drop the references to their school days -- they were both too old for that now. Kathy was on her way to the room reserved for Anna’s reception in another building on campus. She knew that of a little while longer the audience in the Chandler Redutton lecture hall would ask questions and express their admiration, that they would to seek and be given some form of benediction from Anna. Kathy’s teaching assistant Kareem had been instructed to intervene by 5:30 pm and to deliver the speaker to the Stilton Thoms House where Kathy would be hosting a public reception and then dinner with specially invited guests. What a lot of work to arrange this visit to her small, upstate New York college for Anna Ahlgren! She had underestimated her friend’s celebrity and how much she would be in demand during a rare visit to the States. As Kathy climbed the stairs outdoors and away from the building that everyone at Orion College referred to simply as Chan, the heavy air, which had been collecting moisture all day, seemed all at once to condense into rain. Drops of water were kissing her face – it made her laugh to think so -- and felt refreshing. She hadn’t realized that her cheeks were so warm: did Anna still make her blush after all these years? With pride? With envy? It was enough that they had remained friends, it was, as she said to herself “a treasure” in her life. She could not hold the proverbial candle besides Anna’s stellar achievements. Kathy gulped the air as she climbed, ran her tongue on her lips, sipped relief. Anna had always been a star, even when they were undergraduate roommates, and her record in graduate school back home in Sweden had of course been magnificent. Her thesis had been published almost at once, and now ten years later, she was the Field Director of an international

Fall 2015 • Page 29 human rights organization in Africa, and the author of several notable books. By the time Kathy had hiked up the imposing driveway to the historic home of Orion’s first president and scaled “Thom’s steep stairs,” the misty rain was running in rivulets from hair across her face. It was late September, and unseasonably mild weather had been holding steady the entire month. The first wash of color was in the maples, the goldenrod and purple asters were blooming, and a week past the autumn equinox, it had until this morning still felt like summertime. Now she could sense the advance of a cold front, this cool rain its harbinger. Why had she been so stubborn, despite her husband Asa’s warnings this morning, and refused to bring along a coat and hat? Because she was an optimist, she had called back to him from her car door. “No, not that,” she had revised herself, swinging her bare legs into the Volvo. “Because I have faith.” It was because Anna was visiting, and she felt young as she drove off to fetch her at the hotel, where for a few moments they would be alone over coffee before the busy day subsumed them. “Immersed” was more like it, she thought. 5:30 pm, and twenty five guests for dinner, Anna the star of the department’s speaker series this semester. The headline was in neon letters this time: “Unsettled?” it read. Answering herself, she said, “I can’t pretend.” But she wasn’t nervous because of the dignitaries who would be at the dinner. One of her Buddhist teachers long ago had observed that Kathy liked to “ponder,” and this she could accept about herself, yet she had never been tedious or weighty: she was sensitive Kathy, intelligent, anxious Kathy, loving and concerned – or at least she tried to be. She tried hard and was always examining herself to see if she’d matched her ideals. Other people sometimes misconstrued her introspectiveness as diffidence, or its opposite, a sense of superiority. Why was it that people always wanted to categorize you? In order to know where they stood in relation to you? Meditation had taught her to observe her own tendency to be judgmental, especially about herself, and to let go of such troublesome thinking. Sometimes she labeled her passing thoughts with as much objectivity as possible and then in turn allowed the labels to dissolve. Kathy believed it made her less self-righteous, something that as an academic she had always seen as an occupational hazard. Still, it wasn’t always so easy to practice this objectivity and neutrality, especially with some of her more competitive colleagues. A few names came immediately to mind – but wasn’t that also judgmental thinking? She corrected herself immediately. At Thoms house, she took a deep breath, settled into her center of gravity, and grabbed the brass handle of the heavy front door. When she entered the hallway, just as her thoughts turned to her physical appearance and what the rain had

Metaphysical Times wrought, she was greeted by Brenda Donahue. “Professor Wellford -- my goodness! Let me get you something to dry off with.” Brenda was a senior enrolled in Kathy’s research seminar, older than the others students, and rather too motherly to suit her. She soon returned from the kitchen with a white terry cloth towel that she handed to her professor. Thank goodness that “good Brenda” hadn’t actually started to mop off her face, Kathy thought, yet she was genuinely grateful for her student’s kindness. She took the towel with a smile of thanks, and began to daub at her dripping brows while Brenda waited, standing close by in case she could be of further assistance. Kathy wiped her pale freckled arms and then ran the towel down her bare legs and over the tops of her tee-strapped shoes. “Wasn’t her presentation fantastic?” Brenda said as Kathy finished up. It was more of a pronouncement than a question, and it was indeed the reaction she hoped to hear from all of her students and guests. This was why she had invited Anna in the first place. Anna couldn’t help but inspire. She was born to shine, had even chosen the right parents to whom to be born: a pair of pediatricians in Stockholm who constantly wrote books and published medical papers in the best journals. Anna’s latest book, from whose manuscript she had read today, was already out in Swedish, and while she was in the States she would be meeting with an agent to discuss its upcoming publication in English. Of course, Anna herself had done the translation. It seemed to Kathy she must not ever sleep, or else it was that Anna’s work and life and writing simply flowed together as one steady stream of energy. As well as producing three daughters and consuming two husbands, Anna had also given birth to four books -- five, if you counted Walking With the Wounded, the current manuscript that would likely give Anna her first best seller in America. She was leaving Orion tomorrow for her agent’s in New York City, and she had asked Kathy if she wanted to be her guest at the hotel where she would be housed. Between business engagements they could spend some time together in Manhattan, just as they had done years ago when they were college roommates. Kathy folded the tea towel and passed it back into Brenda’s waiting hands. “You’re a life saver,” she said. Brenda smiled and departed, leaving her professor to arrange her damp hair before the antique mirror in the foyer of the elegant mansion. She knew that she had only a few moments before Kareem and Anna and the rest would be arriving. Kareem had his car, thank goodness, and glancing at her watch she thought that at any moment he ought to be pulling up into the circular drive at Thom’s house. She saw that heavy rain was now falling and sensed some slight apprehension just below her breast bone. She named it “concern,” but then revised that to “justifiable concern” in tiny black, block letters that she saw running

Fall 2015 • Page 30 around her wrist like a bracelet. She could manage it. Anna would be fine, Kareem was very reliable, they would be here along with all the other happy, moist guests momentarily. She focused on her hair at the mirror. Actually, it look good like this, wet and rather wild. She smirked. She remembered that it was she who years ago at Bryn Mawr first bedded “Lawrence Perfect”; Anna had picked him up afterwards. “Bodhisattva.” She thought about the word again in connection to the Buddhist vows she regularly chanted, pledging to save all sentient beings and deliver them to nirvana. This was impossible in any quantifiable way, as all intelligent practitioners had to admit. Still, it was a promise Kathy renewed regularly, and if anyone asked her, she was unapologetic about her idealism. “Don’t think about numbers and time,” her Zen roshi had told her. “How will you save all those beings right now?” It was inevitable, Kathy thought, this comparison of herself to Anna -- and how predictable, all the mental captioning that she was indulging: a familiar expression of her neurotic nature that flared up whenever she was unsettled. “Nervous” was more like it. She was a nervous person, she had finally admitted to herself, years after her husband Asa had told her that he loved her no matter how many concerns she had, no matter how many times she condemned herself for being neurotic or anxious or apprehensive. How petty she seemed to herself right now, looking for any tiny aspect of her friend’s life that Kathy might feel she had bested, and yet she had to admit that her marriage was something that Anna didn’t have: Asa and Kathy had been wedded only to each other for eighteen years, they had two children, a girl and a boy, beautiful children, and they lived in a wood-crafted home that her husband, manly, kindly Asa Standish had built with his own hands. As well, two years ago Kathy, had been promoted to Associate Professor at a prestigious private college. She was indeed living a life that she could call the picture of success. “Composed.” That’s what she saw typed in the air above her reflection in the mirror. It was immediately replaced with “Happy?” She turned her head away from the looking glass. A lock of damp hair that she had just attempted to wrap into her bun slipped loose and tumbled down moist across her right eye. This was too much disarray, she thought: she looked bedraggled. Immediately she set about reassembling her hair-do, combing out the remains of the twist with her fingers, deftly plucking her hair pick from the air when it fell free. She shook her head vigorously, and her long auburn-colored mane, shot through here and there with strands of gray, shimmered wavy and lovely under the foyer chandelier. Asa loved to pull her hair down when they went to bed, and he said he found it “a big turn-on” that she had never colored it nor relied on “face paint.” Of course they were happy together, they were. She would not engage in an endless discussion with

Metaphysical Times herself about categories of happiness, as once she did with Anna who was at that time preparing to jettison her second husband. Anna was always in the midst of some transformation or other, and Kathy had noticed right away when she’d picked her up at the airport yesterday how she was nowadays wearing her hair much shorter than ever and dyeing it a blond color it had never naturally been. Anna was as magnetic as ever, yet the lines around her mouth looked hardened into place, her eyes puckered and tired from something more than jet-lag. Friends noticed such things about each other. In a word, she was careworn, which was understandable in someone who gave so much to those in need, but for the first time in all the years they’d known each other, Anna did not seem happy with herself. “There,” Kathy thought, “I’ve said it.” Did she care any less about other people than Anna? She was peering into her own eyes at the hallway mirror, fussing with her hairdo, watching her thoughts arise and dissolve, when at the front door she heard Kareem and Anna being greeted by Brenda. She paused with her hands suspended over the crown of her head. Then she abandoned the idea of putting her hair up and shook her head from side to side. No, she was nobody special.

Where's Georgia?

Look. See Georgia? She is going inside.

The Book of William Author David Warren’s imaginary brother first appeared standing beside the family dog in their back yard garden: the stunted boy’s head no higher than that of the dog. William, as the wild boy would be called, was never traced back to his origins. He stayed on with the Warrens for years, sleeping mostly in the bathtub, sneaking out and about at night. His rambles soon kept him away for nights on end, and then for weeks at a time. He built one-night nests and more permanent habitations - some laid up neatly of stone, some dug into river banks, a few in trees, most not much bigger than a refrigerator box, although he spent a year in the attic of the Cornell University undergraduate Library. When in the North woods, he often lodged in one of his modified beaver houses, and for a year while still an adolescent, he was sent to live with his “Aunt” Sammy on her Florida rooster farm. Contact between William and the Warrens became infrequent during his adult years. Then around 2005, author David Warren moved out to the country, and soon found himself with a flock of chickens unbalanced by too many murderous adolescent roosters. If anyone could wrangle roosters, William could. Author Warren located William, and after he was promised a hand-me-down laptop, William soon moved to Dog’s Plot. As an adult drifting through coffee houses, William had taken to the computer like it was a magic slate, and while at the farm, started the Dog’s Plot Blog, chronicling his days at Dog’s Plot, re-imagining his past, and expanding beyond his recollections and exaggerations, to offer contrarian theories on cosmic origins and natural history ...

Georgia is getting hard to find on the palm reading circuit, since she began homesteading at Dog's Plot and becoming a literary tycoon. But she will be appearing at the Cortland Psychic Fair on October tenth and eleventh at the Holiday Inn and at Beardslee Castle on Sunday October eighteenth, where she will read hands (both of them). She will also read the Skull and Stone oracle cards she and Oren Pierce designed, as well as sell them and Metaphysical Times Publishing Company books.

The Hollow Men

Mistah Kurtz-he dead A penny for the Old Guy I

We are the hollow men We are the stuffed men Leaning together Headpiece filled with straw. Alas! Our dried voices, when We whisper together Are quiet and meaningless As wind in dry grass Or rats' feet over broken glass In our dry cellar Shape without form, shade without colour, Paralysed force, gesture without motion; Those who have crossed With direct eyes, to death's other Kingdom Remember us-if at all-not as lost Violent souls, but only As the hollow men The stuffed men. IV The eyes are not here There are no eyes here In this valley of dying stars In this hollow valley This broken jaw of our lost kingdoms In this last of meeting places We grope together And avoid speech Gathered on this beach of the tumid river Sightless, unless The eyes reappear As the perpetual star Multifoliate rose Of death's twilight kingdom The hope only Of empty men.

II Eyes I dare not meet in dreams In death's dream kingdom These do not appear: There, the eyes are Sunlight on a broken column There, is a tree swinging And voices are In the wind's singing More distant and more solemn Than a fading star. Let me be no nearer In death's dream kingdom Let me also wear Such deliberate disguises Rat's coat, crowskin, crossed staves In a field Behaving as the wind behaves No nearer-

Is it like this In death's other kingdom Waking alone At the hour when we are Trembling with tenderness Lips that would kiss Form prayers to broken stone

Not that final meeting In the twilight kingdom V Here we go round the prickly pear Prickly pear prickly pear Here we go round the prickly pear At five o'clock in the morning. Between the idea And the reality Between the motion And the act Falls the Shadow For Thine is the Kingdom Between the conception And the creation Between the emotion And the response Falls the Shadow Life is very long

Between the desire And the spasm Between the potency And the existence Between the essence And the descent Falls the Shadow For Thine is the Kingdom For Thine is Life is For Thine is the This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends Not with a bang but a whimper.

Synchronicity or Coincidence?

One evening it just happened that Georgia and I were talking about synchronicity and coincidence. I don’t know why. I said that it is Synchronicity when you go "Wo wo' about it, and coincidence when you more or less ignore it; but I mentioned that my old friend the physicist Victor Mansfield actually wrote a book on the subject of synchronicity. Furthermore, the book has an introduction by my imaginary friend the Dali Lama, and is available on-line; so right then she ordered a copy. That same day, Georgia was leafing through some poems of David McAleavey to choose one to publish in this issue of the Metaphysical Times and she came across “Coincidence” which we are printing here, of course. Later she took a Facebook break and here was this post by David Bennet on Synchronicity. The Mansfield book, has not come yet, but Georgia went and looked up the word "Synchronicity" to determine whether she has been experiencing it ... or just coincidence. It turns out that the early twentieth century Freud-contemporary psycholgist, psychiatrist, theorist, and mystician, Carl Jung pretty much owns the definition, as it was he who made up the word. David S. Warren

Jung variously defined synchronicity as an "acausal connecting (togetherness) principle," "meaningful coincidence", and "acausal parallelism." He introduced the concept as early as the 1920s but gave a full statement of it only in 1951 in an Eranos lecture.[3] Carl Jung

A woman drives past, hunches down to crane up into her rearview mirror. Maybe she’s looking at herself, or at her back shelf, but her movement’s so quick she must have felt, well, a ghost, a car behind her which wasn’t there, whose possible presence she’d just remembered the very moment I’ve glanced out at the street as if I thought that through the narrow slats of my window’s blinds something remarkable enough was happening I’d remember what I can’t recall ever having learned, something bigger than the avoidance of evasion and bigger than the beauty of coincidence, which is maybe all beauty is, things happening together which don’t have to, in a face how the eyes are angled or the nostrils flared above some shape of mouth, some stretch of skin, it’s complete how we’re able to approach each other, I wave and you wave back, and the third thing that happens is maybe in the light, we think it’s waves where our waves wander, mingle, wander away into further instants of weaving and touching, the glances, the slight grazing of my hand, our hair, or the air through which your hair was at the same time passing – everything here is full in revolt, not one of these connections tightens, they flow, there’s riot, beauty all around – beside the deathly gasping of those drowning in floods the full heartbreak of those who must just watch, or who tried to help, maybe they were too late, but their desire to have things back, to hold, erupts weeping from them the way gentle lettuce in my garden pushes dirt aside, the push of things we pull – the deep bass harmony is not, in the lightning-stroke of sharing it, chaos. An unexpected surprise. I think I just heard a Spirit move. There is such a hush on the air. No noise to the mornings groove. Except a whisper on my ear. (whisper)... "Good morning Glory".... Good morning... I replied, with a soft low tone. To what do I owe the honor of you coming to my home. The Spirit answered back to me; said all was well and fair and wasn't I the one who came to bring a message there? After quite the conversation, we decided right away. That the solitude of our morning was dynamically on this day a causation for our meeting with a similarity in relation to sitting and relaxing, breathing deeply in meditation. In conclusion we decided, (with lots of joy and laughter)... Whether it's before our birth, or whether it is our life after The world of Spirit and the world of man is like a sister to a brother. It's not only related with key dynamics, but it's related to each other. That there is no Spiritual distance That it's only in the mind And perhaps to ponder for instance It's a physical matter of time. Peace on your journey Kris

PSYCHIC/MEDIUM

Hi Kris,

In a previous reading you told me that I would want to go to New Zealand between the snowfall and feb 2014.You also mentioned the name Simone. That spirit was saying that name was important. I haven't told you, but I had just come back from New Zealand 2 wks. before our reading. During my time there I met a new friend. You blew me away when you stated her name-it is Simone!!! I just thought you deserve to know that like clockwork as this snowstorm rolled in, I heard from her recently. She is severely depressed and I had to notify help for her and now I am going to go there. I just thought you should know how amazingly accurate you are. Christine. .

Questions about Past, Present, Future Are you interested in Communication with Ancestors, Family on the other side Call Kris 315-483-0074 Kris I came to you at a psychic fair in Rochester, NY on March 6, 2010. You mentioned my father Ed, who had passed 8 years earlier and he was there with us. I never mentioned my father or the fact he passed. I asked about a future relationship. You said 3-7 years and it would have something to do with the South Pacific. I recently met a man, (3 years later). It feels like we have known each other for years. I asked where he got his name from. He said it was given to him after an orphan boy his dad met in WWII in the South Pacific. You are amazing! How did they get the name? In Blair Jackson’s book on the Dead, Garcia is quoted as saying: “One day we were over at Phil’s house...He had a big dictionary. I opened it and there was ‘Grateful Dead’, those words juxtaposed. It was one of those moments, you know, like everything else went blank, diffuse, just sort of oozed away, and there was GRATEFUL DEAD in big, black letters edged all around in gold, man, blasting out at me, such a stunning combination. So I said, ‘How about Grateful Dead?’ And that was it.” The dictionary entry reads along these lines: GRATEFUL DEAD: The motif of a cycle of folk tales which begin with the hero coming upon a group of people ill-treating or refusing to bury the corpse of a man who had died without paying his debts. He gives his last penny, either to pay the man’s debts or to give him a decent burial. Within a few hours he meets with a travelling companion who aids him in some impossible task, gets him a fortune or saves his life. The story ends with the companion disclosing himself as the man whose corpse the hero had befriended.(Funk & Wagnall’s Dictionary). The name has also been attributed to this quote, though it’s generally believed that they came across this one later:

“We now return our souls to the creator, as we stand on the edge of eternal darkness. Let our chant fill the void in order that others may know. In the land of the night the ship of the sun is drawn by the grateful dead.” -- Egyptian Book of the Dead
