“Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers [Parents], do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.” (Col 3:18–21 NIV)

These were Paul’s instructions for Christian households and was the Scripture that Bishop Dr Gordon Wong referenced in his message on to some 250 women who attended the General Conference of Women’s Society for Christian Service’s (GC WSCS) Thanksgiving Service, held online via Zoom on 9 Jan 2020. These “family rules” ushered in the theme for the quadrennium 2020–24, “Divine Order in God’s Family”.

The passage from Colossians was read by Mrs Daisy Ling in Mandarin, Mrs Kalaimathi Nagulan in Tamil and Ms Neo Lay Tin in English. At the start of the service, GC WSCS President Dr (Mrs) Teo Li Bee warmly welcomed Bishop Dr Wong, the Rev Dr Gregory Goh (President of the Chinese Annual Conference), the Rev Philip Abraham (President of the Emmanuel Tamil Annual Conference) and overseas guests, namely the Rev Dr Heasun Kim (Korea), the Rev Hikari Chang (Japan), Mrs Ngui-Ting Sing Hong (Hong Kong) and Ms Evelyn Sim (Malaysia). All brought greetings to the body. 2020 was not an easy year for most, but we are reminded to give thanks in everything and in all circumstances. The testimonies of Ms Ong Tham Kwee on God’s provision and Mrs Doris Wong on God’s faithfulness encouraged all to truly rely on the Lord who listens and works all things for the good of His children. Mrs Nagulan’s song, “Nandri Yesuvea” (Thank You, Jesus), filled our hearts with gratitude for God’s goodness in the past year and with hope for 2021.

Indeed, the closing hymn by Pentecost MC’s WSCS ladies expressed what was in the hearts of all—“Count Your Blessings”! We are also grateful to Mrs Angela Tan for being the translator.
