WHAT IS ATHLETIC TRAINING? “Athletic training (AT) is practiced by athletic trainers and health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities.” - National Athletic Trainers Association

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Certified Athletic Trainers work with physically active people in a variety of settings, some of which include: professional and Olympic sports, universities and colleges, secondary schools, physicians’ offices and hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, military and law enforcement agencies, private industry, and corporations.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Methodist University Athletic Training Program is to: 1) develop and prepare students as future certified and licensed athletic trainers; 2) provide high quality athletic training services to the student-athletes of Methodist University; 3) serve as a resource for the community about topics in which athletic trainers possess knowledge, skills, and abilities.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Athletic Training Program at MU is a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accredited undergraduate program. The program is designed to prepare students for professional opportunities as BOC Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC). Students accepted into the program will be working toward either a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts. ATHLETIC TRAINING AT METHODIST Methodist University is fortunate to have six certified athletic trainers on staff. In addition, students in the program will receive individual didactic and clinical instruction in both the classroom and in the athletic training facilities. Athletic training students gain valuable experience working with the athletes and coaches of the 19 NCAA Division III varsity athletic programs at MU, many of which are nationally ranked and are perennial USA South Athletic Conference powers. Each student is assigned to a certified athletic trainer for individualized clinical education in a variety of athletic settings on and off campus. Athletic training students are expected to attend practices and home events related to their clinical experience, as assigned by the supervising certified athletic trainer. ADMISSION The Athletic Training Program is a limited space, competetive admissions program. Requirements for admission include successful completion of the following:   

A minimum GPA of 2.75 in select athletic training courses and a minimum overall GPA of 2.50 A physical examination by a qualified physician A completed application and an interview
