FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHERE WILL I LIVE AS A FIRST-YEAR STUDENT? First-year students will live in one of the following halls: Cumberland (male), Sanford (male), Garber (female). These residence halls are each designated as a Living Learning Community (LLC) for the First Year Experience (FYE) program. WHAT IS A LIVING, LEARNING COMMUNITY? A Living Learning Community (LLC) is a group of students residing in the same residential area, interacting academically and socially with other students and faculty members around a shared interest. LLC’s bridge the gap between in–class learning and out of class experiences. WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY HOUSING ASSIGNMENT? Housing assignments are e-mailed to students who have paid an enrollment deposit beginning in June. WHO WILL MY ROOMMATE BE? Your roommate assignment is made based on the information you provide on the Housing/Pathway Selection form which will be sent by e-mail to deposit-paid students beginning in March. If you request a specific roommate, we will make every effort to accommodate that request, provided the requested student submits a written request to be housed with you. WHAT IF I DON’T LIKE MY ROOMMATE? There is a room change period at the beginning of each semester. Your residential coordinator must approve any room change. DO STUDENT-ATHLETES GET ASSIGNED TO A CERTAIN RESIDENCE HALL? No. Student-athletes are housed just as non-athletes are housed. We do make every effort to house students with similar lifestyles and interests together as roommates. WHEN CAN I LIVE IN THE CAPE FEAR COMMONS OR MCLEAN APARTMENTS? Returning students are given priority based upon semester hours completed when housing assignments are made. Typically, by the time you have completed enough hours to obtain junior status, you should be able to get an assignment in one of these halls.

ARE THE RESIDENCE HALLS SAFE? Great care is taken to provide our students with a safe and healthy living environment. All housing facilities are locked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and only residents are able to access the buildings. Each room within the building is keyed and can only be accessed by those living in the room. Each residence hall is monitored by campus security, a staff of resident assistants and a residential coordinator, as well. Unfortunately, none of this ensures a completely crime-free environment, and students are advised to be aware of their surroundings and report suspicious or illegal activity. WHAT IS THERE TO DO ON CAMPUS? Lots! The Student Activities Committee (SAC), Residence Hall Association (RHA) and Student Government Association (SGA) schedule regular activities such as movie nights, comedy shows and MU Late Night events, in addition to the activities planned by numerous other campus clubs and organizations. You can get as involved as you want at MU! ARE THERE LAUNDRY FACILITIES IN THE RESIDENCE HALLS? Yes, and they are free! Each residence hall has a laundry facility with washers and dryers that are free to use - just add detergent! CAN I BRING MY VEHICLE AND WILL THERE BE PARKING AVAILABLE? Yes, you can bring your vehicle and parking is available in designated lots on campus. CAN I GET A PRIVATE ROOM? Private room requests are granted only if space is available. This has not been the case in the last few years, and we don’t anticipate having space to grant these requests in the near future. IS THERE SOMEWHERE THAT I CAN WORK OUT ON CAMPUS? Yes, the Nimocks Fitness Center s a great place to stay fit. IS SMOKING ALLOWED ON CAMPUS? All University owned buildings are smoke-free. Smoking on campus is restricted to designated areas.

THANK YOU FOR CHOOSING METHODIST UNIVERSITY. WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO MEETING YOU, AND ARE CURRENTLY PREPARING FOR YOUR ARRIVAL! Beginning in March, students who have paid their enrollment deposit will receive instructions for completing their housing application, selecting a roommate and choosing a pathway to the First Year Experience (FYE) program. This information will be sent to your Methodist University e-mail account, which will be assigned shortly after you have been accepted. The FYE program is designed to help first-year students connect with other first-year students in a close-knit Living Learning Community (LLC). A LLC is a group of students residing in the same residential area, interacting academically and socially with other students and faculty members around a shared interest. At Methodist University, every freshman will participate in one of the three LLC’s: Engage, Enrich, or Empower. These LLC’s are an important residential component of the FYE program at Methodist University. More information about the FYE program and pathway selection is enclosed in the First Year Experience brochure. Please review this brochure, which should answer many of your questions about campus living. If you have a preferred roommate, you will be able to note this information on the housing/pathway selection form which will be sent to your MU e-mail account in March. Your prospective roommate

should request you on his/her form, as well. Mutually-selected roommates should be submitted as soon as possible, with priority given to those who pay housing deposits by May 1. We cannot guarantee that you will get the roommate that you request, but every attempt will be made to honor that request. If you have not selected a roommate, one will be selected for you. We do our best to match individuals by major, sport, pathway and other interest. Room assignments will be sent to your Methodist University e-mail account starting in June. You will receive contact information for your roommate in this e-mail. Please be advised that all dependent students who have earned less than 62 semester hours must live in University operated residence halls unless they commute from the home of a parent or legal guardian residing within 60 miles of the University. All requests for waivers of this policy must be directed in writing to the dean of students. If you have questions regarding campus living, please visit the Housing and Residence Life website at www.methodist.edu/ housing, send an e-mail to reslifeinfo@methodist.edu, or call us at (910) 630-7370.

Have a great year and again, welcome, new Monarch! Sincerely, Clifton R. Bobbitt Director of Housing and Residence Life
