TENNIS CENTER A new courtside home
The Gene Clayton Tennis Center will give the Professional Tennis Management Program (PTM) and our Monarch intercollegiate Tennis Team a new courtside home. The 3,000-square-foot building will be situated next to the newly renovated tennis courts, with convenient access from the existing parking lot. The new facility will allow all of the tennis-related programs to have their own central space, with a classroom, tennis pro shop, offices, lobby, locker rooms, and laundry. The center will also be used for tennis seminars, certification events, and student association functions. Since 2006, PTM faculty members have shared space with golf programs in the Richard L. Player Center, while tennis coaches have been located in the March F. Riddle Center. The Gene Clayton Tennis Center will bring them together in a building that proudly represents the program to the Methodist Community. On the roof, there will be an elevated viewing area, which can be used for special events, or by students and visitors looking for a place to lounge, study, or watch a match. Tennis players and spectators will also appreciate the new restrooms, designed to be easily accessed from the outside of the facility.
The tennis pro shop will be a feature of the new building, where PTM students will receive hands-on experience in pro shop management, part of the program’s curriculum. The academic and athletic programs are expanding rapidly, and the new facility will help accommodate the growth. The local tennis community will also benefit from the new Gene Clayton Tennis Center, as the programs host summer camps, player development sessions, and lessons. Having a separate building exclusively for tennis will set Methodist University apart from many other similarly sized schools. It will make a strong impression on prospective student athletes and show the University’s commitment to the sport and the industry.
ABOUT THE COURTS Starting in the summer of 2013, Methodist University began a complete renovation to the tennis courts, the eight-court tennis complex on campus. Originally built in the 1980s, the courts were completely repaved, new California corners fencing was installed, and new lights were added, which will now allow for matches and practices to continue into the evening. The new courts are painted in U.S. Open blue and green, and include blended lines for 10 and Under play and events. The renovation project also includes an attractive gazebo for gatherings and new spectator seating.
