f you’re getting married these days, chances are you’re in your mid to late 20s — or older — and you’re joining your life with someone else who, like you, has been living independently from their parents for many years. And like you, your betrothed has probably accumulated a household’s worth of housewares, appliances and linens, making less-acute the need for
such items to be procured as wedding gifts. This makes wedding gift shopping far more fun, but far more difficult as well, as the options seem limitless. For the betrothed and wedding guests alike, the job will become more enjoyable — and quite possibly more meaningful — if gift sourcing is done in the Methow Valley. If you’ve chosen to hold your big event in the Methow Valley, it’s only fitting that your gifts reflect your connection to this special place.
As a shopper, Methow Made (www. MethowMade.com) is a great place to begin. An information source for locally crafted goods, Methow Made features some of the valley’s finest artisans, growers, and producers. Ranging from pottery to botanicals to fruit to hot sauce, the products of Methow Made reflect the wide and varied talents of Methow producers. Also look for copies of “Made in the Methow,” the annual guide to valley-made products, at local shops Traditional wedding anniversary gifts are themed by year—paper for the first year, cotton for the second year, and so on. If you’re overwhelmed by the idea of shopping for wedding gifts, consider purchasing an item that aligns with one of these themes.

Shape your special day with decor
W
hether you’re planning outdoor nuptials or an indoor reception, there are a lot of things to consider while preparing decor. While details feel important, don’t get lost in them. Pick just a few areas and concentrate your efforts there. If you invest your labors in concentrated areas, your guests are sure to notice your hard work.
Create a Focal Point If you are having an outdoor ceremony, the area you will definitely want to focus on is creating an altar. This can be done by choosing a location that already provides a landmark, such as a live oak. Consider hanging a large piece of luxe fabric behind the officiant, or standing between two large planters filled with flowers or greenery. Other places on which you might want to concentrate
could be the dance floor or head table, if you choose to have one.
Let There Be Light Paying special attention to lighting at your event can be a great way to punch up the style of your summer wedding. Cafe lights are great for illuminating an outdoor ceremony or reception, and any type of strung lighting complements white paper lanterns hung at varying levels. Mason jars can be found on the cheap at many flea markets and yard sales and are the perfect vessel for containing small votive candles. You can create dimension by placing lanterns of various heights on tables or lining doorways. If you are after a real “wow” factor, plan a send-off with sparklers.
Have Fun Communicating Guests are there happiest when

Have f un communicating to your g uests. Sandwich boards (the two-sided chalkboards commonly seen in cafes) are a great way to point guests in the
direction of seating, the dance floor or the ceremony space if you are hosting the ceremony and reception in the same location. Easels are fantastic for displaying menus or placards, and chalk board hangtags add a special touch to drink stations and buffet tables. •

Getting the right person behind the camera can make all the difference
C
hoosing a wedding photographer can be a tricky business. Start by finding a photographer to whom both you and your fiance are drawn through their personal style. But what else do you need to know? There are several questions you need answered.
Why to ask: You cannot compare photographers if you don’t know what is included for the price. Prints? Digital copies? Do they put together an album or include an engagement shoot for free? How many hours of coverage do you get?
how many weddings have you shot; how many do you shoot in a year?
Will touch-ups happen before or after i see the proofs?
Why to ask: This will tell you several things. You want to know that this is his profession, and she has shot enough weddings to be sufficiently experienced to deal with the pressures that come on the big day. You also want to know you will be prioritized on your day — you don’t want a photographer that overloads herself.
Why to ask: Touch-ups are how photos become magazine-worthy. Some photographers will perform this technique on all your photos, while others only want to spend time doing this on photos you choose.
Will you be my photographer, or will it be one of your partners (or assistants)?
Why to ask: If you are booking with a group (or anyone that is more than a one-person show) make sure you speak with the person who will actually be shooting your wedding. What is your favorite part of a wedding?
Why to ask: This can tell you a lot about how your photographer approaches weddings and what she might inherently pay more attention to. It is important that you find someone who shares your priorities and helps you see the beauty in moments you might overlook.
What type of packages do you offer?
What is your deposit/refund policy?
Why to ask: Know the particulars. When is the money due and what happens if catastrophe strikes and you have to postpone or cancel? Do you prefer to work off a shot list or capture events as they unfold?
Why to ask: It is good to find a photographer who works on a mixture of these two approaches. While a shot list provides a guide (and guarantees that you get at least one photo with grandma) you are hiring a photographer for his expertise. Allow him to capture the events while you focus on living them.
knowing when you will get to clap eyes on them will help you manage the waiting. •
how long after the wedding before we see the photos?
Why to ask: You will be wanting to see photos of your wedding the very next day. While this is impossible,

hoosing a wedding gown can be one of the hardest decisions a woman makes. It is built up through history, through the media and through the sheer fact that it is most likely one of the most expensive garment purchases she will make in her lifetime.

Ethereal wedding gowns have soft and feminine silhouettes. Romance is the name of the game with ethereal dresses. They’re ideal for the bride who covets billowing tulle or admires a beaded sleeve. Ethereal dresses also pair well with nature and are a fantastic option for brides choosing to marry outdoors.
Open backs and plunging necklines are everywhere in bridal fashion these days, and while both are alluring options for flashing some skin, don’t overlook their more demure and classic, “off-the-shoulder” sister. Off-theshoulder dresses scream romance but give more detail than strapless gowns. The best part? So many designers are incorporating the trend that you are guaranteed to find one in your style
Stephen Your dress should reflect your style. Photo courtesy of Autumn Pines photography — whether covered in lace or a more structured satin fashion.
Short Audrey Hepburn and Mia Farrow both went short on their big day, and you can’t get more iconic than that. Whether you choose a mini or a dress that shows your ankles but no more, you are guaranteed to have all eyes on you.. •

very bride wants to look her very best on her wedding day. While some elements of appearance are more controllable than others — such as hair and nails — achieving a clear and bright complexion is a much more formidable task. Some of the best tools at your disposal exist not in your bathroom or high-end beauty counters but in your kitchen. Mother Nature, lovely as she is, has given us plenty to create a pre-wedding beauty regimen. Concern: Dry and dull hair Try: Olive oil Use olive oil in place of your conditioner after using your usual shampoo. It is simple as that. Olive oil is packed with great fatty acids that nourish and moisturize your locks. Looking for a deep conditioning treatment? Instead of rinsing out right away, apply and
wrap your hair in a towel for 15 minutes, then rinse. Concern: Uneven skin tone Try: Coconut oil The great thing about this treatment is that it triple-tasks as makeup remover, cleanser and moisturizer. Best done at night, rub roughly a tablespoon of coconut oil all over your face, messaging the skin for several minutes. Remove with a warm, damp washcloth first by holding the cloth to your face and allowing the steam to open your pores, and then slowly messaging the oil off. Rinse the cloth as needed. Concern: Puffy eyes Try: Tea bags Soak two tea bags in warm water before chilling in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes. Place each tea bag over one eye and let rest for five
Brides do not have to visit the cosmetic counter for effective beauty products. Photo courtesy of Autmn Pines Photography minutes. The caffeine in the tea will reduce most swelling for a dramatic, immediate difference. Concern: Weak or slow-growing nails Try: Milk and lemon juice Soaking your nails in this mixture
for 10 or so minutes will help promote strong and healthy nails. You should start to notice a difference after a couple of treatments. Really want to pamper your hands? Follow up by messaging a natural oil, such as olive or coconut, into your nail beds to soften cuticles and the surrounding skin. •

Hashtags are the latest trend to help capture all of the magic of your wedding
O
ur parents put disposable cameras on every reception table; we have Instagram. Creating a personalized hashtag is the hottest new trend to hit weddings and can be a great way to gather photos from your special day — especially moments that you may have missed because you were busy taking family portraits, or just staring at your spouse thinking, “I can’t believe we’re married.” Best of all, hashtags, by their very nature, collect all of the photos attached to it in one place. No idea where to begin? Just keep in mind that the ultimate goal is usability: You want people to use it so you can see the aggregate of fantastic photos. There are several wedding hashtag generators out there if you’re feeling creatively crippled. (Weddinghashtagwall.com and weddingwire.com are two such sites). But remember wedding hashtags are personal, so don’t overthink it. Here are a few tips to get you started:
Keep It Simple Start with some combination of your names: First, last, nicknames, initials. Your hashtag should not only be a reflection of the two of you but also be easy to remember. Capitalizing the beginning of each word in your hashtag keeps the message clear and helps people distinguish what you are saying (for example, #MeagenandCarter).
Bonus: It doesn’t matter if your guests capitalize every word. It will work either way.
Have Fun with It Play with turns of phrase, idioms and alliteration! Think: #ForeverYoung, #Weber Wedding, #HappilyEverAllard. After you think you have a few you really like, check and see if others have used them. Chances are you won’t be the first couple to use #MeantToBe. Hashtags are public, and depending on how popular your favorite one is, you might not want to have to wade through hundreds of photos of other people’s weddings to find yours. Numbers are a great way to set your hashtag apart from the rest. Think wedding date or year, or another number that holds special meaning to you.
Advertise It Once you’ve successfully chosen your hashtag, spread the word. Make sure it is prominently displayed on your wedding website and save the dates. It should also appear in multiple locations at your reception. Couples have chosen to display their hashtag everywhere from welcome signs to cocktail napkins. Make sure your guests don’t have to search too hard, and your wedding hashtag will be a social media hit. •
