ime and again, we’ve heard people tell us that their first encounter with the Methow Valley was in the winter, usually for Nordic skiing. For some, winter is the only time they visit. We’re OK with that, because the Methow is an enchanting place during the snowy months, with an ever-widening number of reasons to visit, recreate, relax and socialize. For some, Nordic is still the thing, and why not? With more than 200 kilometers of groomed trails, the Methow challenges you to explore the valley’s farthest reaches on skis. But skiing is not the only way to get out and get around. The Methow has become a Mecca for fat biking enthusiasts. It was already a favorite of snowmobilers. It’s becoming increasingly appealing to snowshoers. With the expanded facilities at the Winthrop Rink, ice skaters and hockey players are taking full advantage of a

much longer season on the ice. And just a few miles away, Loup Loup Ski Bowl offers challenging alpine skiing in an extraordinary setting — plus snowboarding, tubing, Nordic skiing and the new favorite, luge sledding. And let’s not forget the somewhat more sedate (but rewarding) outdoor experiences such as ice fishing and stargazing. You can come fully equipped for all those activities, or find what you need to buy or rent at our helpful local retailers. When it’s time to find indoor comforts, the Methow Valley hospitality industry will be ready with a range of lodging, dining, imbibing and entertainment options. The Methow Valley Winter 2018-19 publication is designed to provide easily accessible information about all things Methow, and provide ideas for how to spend your time here. And if haven’t yet, you should try our summers. But that’s another story.

Open-air ice skating: a Methow tradition

magine a world-class ice-skating rink with a regulation hockey surface, permanent ice-making system and a variety of programs for all ages and abilities. Now take the roof off, and you have the Winthrop Rink — an open-air facility that allows you to enjoy a great skating experience and Methow Valley views simultaneously. For decades, folks in the Methow Valley went ice skating outside the old-fashioned

way — by finding an area big enough to flood and freeze when the conditions were right. The dream of a permanent outdoor facility was realized in 2007 when the Winthrop Rink was completed, thanks to a state grant matched by local donations of money, time and materials. But it wasn’t until the winter of 201617 that the final phase of the rink plan was finally completed: a permanent ice-making system was installed. Now the outdoor rink is open from early November

through March. The rink’s busy schedule includes a full slate of skating sessions and lessons for casual skaters, or for students who are just learning or improving; a youth hockey program; drop-in sessions for hockey “rink rats;” and adult and youth hockey tournaments. Don’t worry if you’re not equipped for a spin round the rink. Rentals are available for those who don’t have their own skates.

Winter offers stargazing at its best By David Ward

O

ne of the grandest sights that the human eye can see is a myriad of stars twinkling in a clear winter’s night sky. Get out of town and away from Santa and his reindeer and all the other distracting Christmas lights people put out on their lawns these days. Take plenty of warm clothes and a blanket or lounge chair. Then, and I know this sounds crazy, lie down, yes, lie down in the snow and look up at that great dome of sky above. Many nights at this time of year are cloudy, but when we have a clear, moonless one, it can be spectacular. There are a couple of reasons why winter stargazing is the best. The air is cold, an obvious fact for anyone out in it, and cold air is heavy and still. In summer the atmosphere is being buffeted by heat waves coming off the ground as it is cooling down in the evening. These waves distort our view of the night sky, but without them on a cold clear night, the air is more transparent so we can see more stars. Also in the winter, we are looking out into the universe away from the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way, and its billions of stars. In the summer a large part of the sky is actually lit up by a faint glow from all those stars which we cannot see individually. At this time of year with its short days and long cold nights, most of that glow is gone and the stars we can see are brighter and clearer.

Looking up into the heavens above, imagine you are peering through the shadow of the earth. We call it night and it extends about one million miles from us into space in the shape of a cone. Think of it as the cone of night and almost everywhere else is blazing sunlight. Of course, being in that shadow allows us to see the stars. How many stars can you see up there? It may look like millions, but if you have excellent eyesight and the night is clear and dark, you will be able to pick out about 5,000 individual stars. The true number is far greater, but our eyes are just not sensitive enough to see them all.

BIG AND BRIGHT

Almost all those stars we can see with the unaided eye are bigger and brighter than our sun, some spectacularly so. Check out Rigel, the bright white star at the foot of Orion. That star shines 60,000 times as bright as our sun. To enjoy the same climate we have here on earth, our little planet, if it got moved to Rigel, would have to be five times farther away than Pluto is from our sun. Across from Rigel at the shoulder of Orion, reddish Betelgeuse is a red super giant star. Swollen up in its old age, it is only a star’s heartbeat away from exploding in a super nova explosion, one of the most violent events in the universe. If it were the size of a giant red beach ball as tall as a 10-story building, the earth would only be as big as the

period at the end of this sentence. Those three stars all in a row in Orion’s belt may not look like much, but they are all whoppers. The middle one, Alnilam, is one of the most luminous stars we can see, a brilliant beacon shining out from the deep abyss of space, possibly almost one million times as brighter as our sun. Just southeast of Orion is Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. Do not be fooled by its brilliance, though. It is quite close to us, almost our next-door neighbor, and shines at only 25 times the luminosity of our sun.

AC TIV E IMAGINATIONS

Ancient people had no clue how bright or how far away the stars are or even what they might be, but they projected there over active imaginations on the night sky. For them the heavens were filled with heroes, fearsome beasts and beautiful maidens. The great hunter Orion had many talents including the ability to walk on water and the skill to slay any beast on earth. Romantic pursuits were not his strong suit, however. In one story his girlfriend, a divine goddess, shot and killed him with her bow and arrow. In another the seven gorgeous sisters he pursued for seven years detested him so much, they begged to be placed in the sky as stars, rather than submit to his amorous advances. Look for them in the beautiful little Pleiades star cluster just west of Orion. The Gemini twins were born of the

Some of the creatures up there include an angry bull with a menacing red eye, a giant lion which fell from the moon as a meteor and a couple of hunting dogs. There is even a sea serpent with multiple heads. Every time you chopped off a head, two more grew back in its place. Only the hero Hercules could dispatch this terrifying beast. If you want to see some fainter objects deep in the vastness of space, try for the Milky Way galaxy, our home in the cosmos, which can be seen in the winter from a dark place like the Methow Valley. While not as bright as

same mother and conceived on the same night by two different fathers, one a mortal man and one an immortal god. If that is not weird enough, they then hatched out of an egg at birth. In life they were inseparable, accompanying Jason and the Argonauts on their quest for the Golden Fleece. They also rescued their sister Helen when she was abducted. She later became famous as Helen of Troy, the beautiful woman who provided the excuse for the Trojan War. Because of their unique parentage, one of the twins was mortal and the other immortal. When death threatened to separate them, they decided to somehow share the immortality of the one immortal twin. No one could figure out how this might work, even the gods, so they were placed in the sky where they could be together forever. Look for them in the east during mid-winter.

the summer version, look for it arching overhead from north to south in midwinter. That faint glow is the combined light of billions of distant stars. Winter is a great time to look right out of our galaxy, thousands of times farther from us than any of the stars we can see up there. Use the “W” of Cassiopeia to point the way to the Andromeda galaxy, our neighbor in the huge cosmos and the most distant object visible to the naked eye. While you are out there, keep an eye open for the fleeting celestial phenomenon like meteors, tiny sand-size particles of debris slamming into our atmosphere at thousands of miles per hour. The International Space Station sometimes passes over us. It will appear as a bright star like object traveling rapidly and evenly from west to east across the sky. Watch it dim and disappear in the east as it moves into the shadow of the earth. If you are lucky you might even spot an Iridium Flare, a ray of sunshine glinting off a satellite orbiting the earth. Enjoy those few spectacular nights under the stars and stay warm out there.

Snowmobiling: the best way to cover lots of ground

T

here’s no more efficient and enjoyable way to see lots of Methow backcountry than on a snowmobile, preferably in the company of friends. Snowmobilers can access 177 miles of groomed snowmobile trails from five Sno-Parks in the Methow Valley –and also connect with routes to Conconully or Chelan. Snowmobiling is also increasingly 12

popular with skiers and snowshoers as a way to get to further off the beaten track. Backcountry skiers often head up the North Cascades Highway by sled, and then strap on their skis and climbing skins to get up to powder-filled bowls. Snowshoers also use snow machines to increase their options in the high country. You can explore on your own, or get to know local trails and other sled

enthusiasts by joining a weekly ride with the Methow Valley Snowmobile Association. The club’s rides take you to designated backcountry areas to play on the hills and always include a chuck wagon lunch. Club rides are open to everyone, and are a good way for less-experienced riders to team up with others. Riders typically set out in small groups from the Sno-Park. Visit mvsnowmobile.blogspot.com

for information. The snowmobile association maintains two warming huts — one near Sweetgrass Butte and the other in Blackpine Basin, between the Goat Creek and Yellowjacket Snoparks — equipped with a wood stove and basic emergency supplies. The local Mountain Trails Grooming Association grooms three times a week, generally on Wednesday,

Thursday and Friday, although the schedule can change if conditions warrant. Groomers based in Okanogan groom from the North Summit Sno-Park at the Loup (providing connections to Conconully), and a Chelan club grooms from the Gold Creek Sno-Park, so you can link to trails in the Chelan network. While Highway 20 west of the Methow Valley is closed to motorists during the winter, it is open to snowmobilers as far as Cutthroat Lake Road.

GET IN VOLV ED

The Methow Valley Snowmobile Association organizes weekly club rides (alternating on Saturday and Sunday), from December through March (see mvsnowmobile.blogspot.com for schedule). Membership: family, $20/ year; individual, $15/year. The association meets the third Tuesday of each month from October to March at the Winthrop Barn. Potluck is at 6 p.m.; meeting starts at 6:45 p.m. For more information, contact methowsnowmobilers@gmail. com.

Paradise for fat bike fans

W

hether you take a mellow pedal along an icy river, or push your way uphill to take in panoramic winter vistas, fat biking opportunities abound in the Methow Valley. It’s “the best part of the state for fat biking,” as the Northwest Fatbike Facebook page says. Renowned for its Nordic skiing trails, the Methow Valley was one of the first ski areas in the nation to embrace fat biking when the sport began taking off. Methow Trails, which operates the cross-country trail system, recognized the growing interest in fat biking several years ago and created dedicated trails for fat bikers. Local fat biking aficionados,

organized as Methow Fatbike, have developed a network of trails in recent years around Pearrygin Lake State Park, and host weekly evening rides that culminate in a bonfire and barbecue. Methow Fatbike also hosts an annual gathering that draws fat bikers from throughout the Northwest. New this winter, Bear Creek Golf Course will offer fat bike rentals and groomed fat bike and snowshoe trails around the golf course. The golf course snack bar will be open for food and beverages, and the clubhouse will have an outdoor fire pit and indoor warming space. “We will be targeting more of the beginner or intermediate rider and

families who have different skill levels who are looking for something for everyone,” said Laurie Hilton, who operates Bear Creek Golf Course. Riders who want more challenging terrain can rent bikes at the golf course and ride trails at nearby Pearrygin Lake, and enjoy a snack or beverage at the golf course before, during or after their ride, she said. The Methow Valley has several outlets where fat bikes can be rented or purchased, and where knowledgeable folks can guide fat bikers to the best places to ride. With its spectacular scenery, plenty of blue-sky days and terrain for novice to expert, the Methow Valley is an ideal place to ride out winter.

LOUP LOUP SKI BOWL, a community nonprofit ski hill, offers nearly 50 kilometers of groomed Nordic trails near Loup Loup Pass. www.skitheloup. com/nordic-skiing, (509) 557-3401 METHOW TRAILS, a 42-year-old recreation-focused nonprofit organization that establishes and maintains more than 200 kilometers of trail from Mazama to Winthrop. www. methowtrails.org, (509) 996-3287

There are five major trailheads for access to Nordic skiing in the Methow Valley; three of them are linked. The Methow Trails system comprises three main areas, all connected by the 30-kilometer Methow Community Trail, which stretches from Winthrop to Mazama with spurs up to Sun Mountain and out to Wilson Ranch and Early Winters Creek. The Sun Mountain and Rendezvous areas are the highest and thus tend to be open earliest (often by Thanksgiving)

and stay groomed the longest (through April 1 in good snow years). METHOW COMMUNITY TRAIL. The 30K Methow Community Trail (MCT) is the most easily accessed section of trail in the system. Ski moderate terrain through sunny fields or undertake a fun point-to-point ski with some hill climbing in between Mazama and Winthrop. The Winthrop Trailhead will feature a new self-service waxing hut this season. SUN MOUNTAIN. The Sun Mountain trails offer varied terrain, with everything from sustained hill climbs to some relatively flat loops. A warming hut at the Chickadee Trailhead makes starting in this area quite comfortable and an illustrated “StorySki” makes it an appealing place to take the kids. RENDEZVOUS. If you like hills, you’ll want to hit the Rendezvous, accessible from Cub Creek, Mazama, and the Gunn Ranch Road. This area has a backcountry feel, even when you’re no more than a few kilometers from a trailhead.

THE LOUP. The Loup Loup Pass area offers a small but worthwhile Nordic option: South Summit. Located 12 miles east of Twisp, South Summit features 50K of trails with some dog-friendly options. Trail passes are not required but a Sno-Park permit, available at the Loup Loup ticket office, is. The Bear Mountain Nordic Trails at the Loup are operating when the luge is not, on Wednesdays and Fridays except during holiday weeks.

CHECK IT OUT

Enjoy winter at your own pace

M

oving through the Methow winter landscape should be as enjoyable as it is physically invigorating. Traversing our terrain on snowshoes offers both — and it’s affordable as well as adaptable to your abilities. If you haven’t discovered snowshoeing, consider these reasons for strapping in and heading out: • It’s fun. Snowshoeing opens up a winter world that offers quiet solitude or a social outing. • It’s easy to learn. People say if you

can walk, you can snowshoe. Unlike skiing, the learning curve is low. Your technique will improve with experience, so strap on the shoes and start exploring. • It’s family-friendly. Since it’s an easyto-learn sport and can be as relaxed or strenuous as you want to make it, snowshoeing is a great activity for families. • It’s inexpensive. Required gear is snowshoes that you rent or buy, perhaps some poles, and of course warm clothes. If you decide to explore the miles of snowshoe trails maintained by Methow Trails, you’ll need a trail pass that costs

$5/day. If you want to explore off-trail, it’s free. • It’s good for you. Snowshoeing provides a low-impact, aerobic exercise that helps you stay in shape during the winter. And, it poses little risk of injury. • It’s versatile. You can go easy or go hard, flat or steep. And it allows you to travel in terrain and in conditions that don’t work for skiing or walking. The Methow makes it easy to get started. Check out the information on these pages to make snowshoeing your next adventure.

Ice fishing is really cool

I

f you’re hungry for fresh fish in the winter, you’re in good company — dedicated ice fishers say fish are also hungrier in the cold weather. That turns a little time on the ice into a satisfying meal. With the right equipment, you can pierce the layer of ice in less than a minute, gaining access to a world of yellow perch, rainbow trout and kokanee. The equipment — and technique — are straightforward and inexpensive, compared to summer fishing. You don’t need a boat or high-end fly-fishing gear — and you can keep your catch.

You drill a hole with an auger, scoop out the snow and ice, and drop your line in the hole with live bait or a shiny lure and a jig to sink it. When you get a fish, you pull it straight up through the hole instead of reeling it in. Drilling a hole, even with a handcranked auger, is surprisingly quick — a sharp auger will make a hole through more than a foot of ice in less than a minute. Most ice fishers make a hole that’s 6 to 8 inches in diameter, big enough to see what you’re doing and bring up fish easily without compromising the ice.

It’s helpful to have a bucket to use as a seat and carry home your catch. Ice fishing is fun for kids, since they don’t need to learn to cast. While it can be chilly, the Methow Valley’s bright, sunny winter makes it comfortable to be out long enough to get a good catch. And you can bring a wheelbarrow or metal trough to build a fire and a tent for shelter if it’s really cold.

WHERE TO GO

Best spots in the Methow Valley: • Davis Lake — winter is the only time of year you can keep rainbow trout

(10-14 inches) from Davis Lake • Patterson Lake — yellow perch (no limit), rainbow trout, kokanee, bass • Best spots in the Okanogan: • Bonaparte Lake — kokanee (10-12 inches), triploid eastern brook trout, tiger trout • Leader Lake (just over the Loup Loup summit) — perch, bass, catfish, rainbow trout, black crappie, bluegill • Palmer Lake — kokanee (more than a foot long — twice the size of Patterson Lake kokanee) Limit on most species is five a day.

WHAT YOU NEED

• A short pole (even a stick and some fishing line will work once you make a hole) • An ice auger (to drill a hole) • A scoop (to keep the hole free of snow and slush) • A bucket (to support the rod, to sit on and to carry your catch; a lawn chair also works) • Live bait, a shiny lure or artificial maggots • You’ll also need a fishing license from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife — (360) 902-2464 or fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov. Optional, but nice to have: • A jig (to sink the lure or bait straight down in the water) • A wheelbarrow or metal trough (for a fire) • A tent or other shelter Even more luxurious: • An electric sensor or that beeps or lights up, or a device that sends up a flag (to let you know when you have

WHY YOU SHOULD GO

• cold-water fish are tastier, with a less “fishy” taste • the simplicity of ice fishing — no casting or reeling in – makes it fun for kids • some species, like trout, are easier to catch in the winter

SPECIAL E V ENTS

Annual Ice Fishing Tournament and Festival on Sidley Lake in Molson (northern Okanogan County) on Saturday, Jan. 19. Fishing starts at 8 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m., with excellent opportunities for good-sized trout and triploids. Prizes for adults and kids. Register at the historic Molson Grange starting at 7 a.m., where there will be an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, an arts and crafts fair, lunch, bingo and a raffle, all to benefit local nonprofits. Registration is also open at Sidley Lake during the tournament. For more information, call Eden Valley Guest Ranch at (509) 485-5002.

ICE SAFET Y

Make sure the ice is thick enough to support you. Drill a hole with an auger a foot or two from shore and measure the thickness of the ice, then test it again in the middle of the lake — 4 to 6 inches is generally considered safe, but remember that ice is not uniform — it may be a foot thick in one area but only a few inches nearby. Look for new, clear ice. Clear ice tends to be more solid; ice that is off-color is usually weaker. New ice is generally stronger than ice that has been around for a while — 4 inches of clear, newly formed ice may support one person, while a foot of older ice that has thawed and refrozen may not. Remember that snow insulates the ice, meaning it will freeze more slowly. Carry ice-rescue claws. Claws will enable you to climb out if you fall through the ice. You can make claws from pieces of wood or a broomstick with nails embedded in the ends, or from sharpened screwdrivers.

STAR STRUCK

TIE THE KNOT

Winter brings magnificent stargazing, and the Methow Valley’s dark skies will show you the constellations like you’ve never seen them before. Check out Dave Ward’s article about winter stargazing on page 10, and read his Naked Eye column in the Methow Valley News for current happenings in galaxies near and far, far away.

WE’RE ENTERTAINING

Check out what’s going on at The Merc Playhouse in Twisp. Live music is on tap at many local bars and eateries — often with no cover charge — including Old Schoolhouse Brewery, Methow Valley Ciderhouse, Sixknot Taphouse, Twisp River Suites, the Branding Iron, Mick & Miki’s Red Cedar Bar, Copper Glance and The Barnyard Cinema. Get married. Well OK, this is not going to be a spur-of-the-moment time-killer when you’re visiting the valley, but if you plan ahead, winter is a spectacular setting for nuptials. Check out the Methow Valley News “Valley Vows” publication for complete information on how to make it happen. Look for copies around town for find the digital version on our website, www.methowvalleynews.com.

TALK IT OV ER

Enjoy a casual conversation and great coffee at Blue Star Coffee Roasters, Kind Grinds, Rocking Horse Bakery, 3 Bears Cafe & Quilts, the Mazama Store, Oliver’s Artisan Kitchen, Cinnamon Twisp Bakery, or the deli at Hank’s Harvest Foods. You’ll be served blends from one or the other of the Methow Valley’s specialty coffee companies: Blue Star and Lariat Coffee Roasters in Winthrop.

NIGHT LIFE

Contrary to the small-town stereotype, there is actually a Methow night life. On weekends, Copper Glance in Winthrop is open until 1 a.m. and they frequently have bands and dance parties. The Branding Iron in Twisp is another hot spot, where on Fridays you’ll find a lively karaoke session and Saturday turns out locals on the dance floor.

GO ALOF T

In a place with numerous magical experiences, floating above the valley in a hot air balloon ranks high on the list. You launch from Winthrop just after sunrise with the folks at Morning Glory Balloon Tours, and glide soundlessly over the valley, exploring terrain from a vantage few will ever experience. On the first weekend of March, Winthrop hosts an annual balloon fest, when dozens of balloons from around the Northwest fill the morning skies. The site of so many silent colorful bubbles juxtaposed against a blue sky is eclipsed only by the otherworldly glow of a balloon lit up in downtown
