RUN, DON’T WALK ...Like an egyptian

...In the 1920’s, King Tutankhamen’s tomb was uncovered by explorers and re-
searchers within the vast deserts of the African continent beneath one of the many wonders of the world, the Egyptian pyramids. In this dry, arid, and hot region of the earth, many would think clothing and fashion would not assist in living comfortably under draped fabrics, jewels, accessories, and wigs. However, as the body becomes acclimated to the weather around it, clothing itself is bearable, and wearable. By wearing loosely draped linens, never wool and never fitted, now that’s just low class, the slinky figures, much like the cats they worship, they can wear the finely spun linens, or even a second choice, Egyptian cotton. Donning the holy and royally white colored fabrics, Egyptians were able to identify social status as well as make a fashion statement, centuries after these ancient people have long gone...

...NICKI MINAJ embraces the EGYPTIAN influences of 3000BC-500BC, With her cleopatra styled hair.... These influences can be seen In fashion by various retailers and celebrities....
DRESS IT UP! Kim Kardashian and Nicole Scherzinger each donned a rendition of a Kalasiris, which is a long sheath dress worn by women of Ancient Egypt, however, their versions are a bit more modest, many women would wear it bear breasted, however, Kim’s draping does resemble the styling of how you woudl tie a kalasiris, but in her version, theres no wardrobe malfunction. Nicole’s version gives us a slinky figure with the shiny gold collar...VERY Egyptian, she just needs a wig like Nicki Minaj and we can call her Cleopatra... if Cleopatra was a peasant, he dress is cut way too short to be a person of nobility.
STYLE LIKE AN EGYPTIAN Throw on a pair of sandals (Steve Madden), much like the palmsandals, a scarab ring (Christina Rotandaro), a wonderbra (Victoria’s Secret Bombshell Bra), its better than sawdust and wax liek they used to do it, and a bib necklace, like the Ancient Egyptian jewelled collars of 3000BC-500BC, as seen on Olivia Pallermo of The Hills spin-off, The City.

...in menswear, we can find that retailers like H&M’s Spring 2010 lookbook appropriates the influence of an Ancient Egyptian man’s schenti, which is basically a skirt for men.. it seems that Marc Jacobs is bringing the skirt back in. It is just about time.. The modern loincloth, or the man’s brief is good for comfort as well as practical, especially if you decide to wear a skirt...I mean schenti. Even muscicians like Prince carries around a little of egypt with him seeing as his guitar resembles the ANKH symbol, meaning the key of life to the Ancient Egyptians
Finish off your look with some dark mascara, eyeliner, and eyeshadow to resemble use of kohl. Taylor Momsen has it down...ask her for some tips. GOING GREEK 5
...while being affordable
...The Greeks of 1200
BC-270 BC were seen as the wisest and somewhat the most advanced cultures in human existence in many different areas. Establishing a basic knowledge and structure for Philosophy, Mythology, Science, Art, Architecture, Theatre, Politics, and athleticism, Grecians of this era were truly trendsetters in their ways of academics as well as fashion. The beatuiful gowns by Ellie Saab’s collection, we are able to take from it a glimpse of Grecian sophistication and elegance. Through use of linens and wools and colors other than yellow, Grecians make their marks in fashion history by setting a trend for sillhouettes that will translate into various styles for women today. Without Grecian innovation, We would wear shoes as if we had two left feet. Literally.
...ELLIE SAAB demonstrates the knowledge of fit, form and comfort when it comes to Grecian gowns. Though this luxury brand may be out of price range, there are many affordable choices....

...In a class based society, Ancient Rome of 265 B.C.-476 A.D., the particular
dress of the people was a marker to distinguish between citizen, slave and chaste female citizens. Through the donning of the toga, an elliptically shaped fabric, draped onto the contours of the body, peopel were able to distinguish between one another. Through use ofthe decoration of their togas and tunics, men were able to distinguish members of the military or nobility through the rings of decoration, or clavi. Weather being very cool near the Mediterranean Sea, the Roman people, who herded sheep, mainly used wool as construction for their togas and ceremonial dress. With increased imports from China, fine silks were made available to the wealthy and the wide variety of colors and dyes were introduced to the roman people allowing for diversification of style and colorings. The increase in materials, color, and variety had introduced a thriving “ready-to-wear market fully equipped with dialogue and lingo reflecting the nature of bargaining and sales. The replication of Roman style is current, yet timeless...

ROME, LIKE STYLE, ...wasn’t built in a day By: Jason Le
On the left, Selena Gomez is styled for her Music Video “A Year Without Rain” and on the right, model for designer, Catherine Deane. Selena Gomez looks stunning in a dress inspired by the Roman toga, modernized for the red carpet events... and glamorous music video shoots. The toga has evolved into many different forms of draping and variations in color signifying different social classes and ranks of power. However, the toga then was made of yards upon yards of divine fabrics and colors for men because women were considered to be the lowest in social hierarchy. Unless of course, she was divorced or committed adultry, she no longer can wear the traditional women’s stolla. But you wouldn’t do that, would you Ms. Gomez?

BUYZENTINE, BUY EVERYTHING ...2NE1, the KPOP Fashionistas By: Jason Le
15
...2NE1, South Korean Pop girl group, rises to the top with their amazing talent as well as their eye for fashion. Dressed in exotic prints, details and colors their style always has touches of Byzantine fashions.
...The Early Christian and Byzantine Era of 200-1200AD, the idea of lux and
glamor and sophistication was astounding. art had become more and more public to express the Christian faiths as well as opened up new doors for fashion itself. the use of mosaic tilings and murals had quite the influence on dress. The heavily embroidered dalmaticas, or church robes, jewels, and accessories reflected these new found forms of expression and luxury. Which differs greatly to the period succeeding it which was an exact opposite of the Byzantine Era of luxury glamor even under a strong Christian belief system. Without the people of this time, the pope couldnt glitter and glimmer when his robes hit the sunlight, and neither would you. 2NE1, though they have yet to break into the United States mainstream music industry, they have already have been tapped by designer labels such as Louis Vuitton and Jeremy Scott, both brands with amazing detailing and style, to model and represent the brand to the Korean people...
WHO WEARS WHAT? ...inside 2NE1’s wardrobe Even at age 16, Gong Minji (Minzy) was brought into the high fashion world with daring styles by her stylist. Her jewelled high heels worn for a promotion of their first mini album’s release of hit track “I Don’t Care”. The jewelled shoe is very remnant of the Byzantine Era’s luxurious styling of clogs. The overall look of a jewelled shoe makes a fashion statement rather than her specialty, dancing. But Minzy still manages to dance in 4-inch heels.
MINZY
She has also been seen wearing a modern version of a cope worn by priests which is a voluminous cape worn for processions. But I doubt you would see it in black leather on a priest.
Sandara Park, also known as Dara usually sports a whimsical style while performing and promoting their albums and title tracks. She has been seen performing in the Chuseok festival with a big bow on her head resembling a turban like vibe. Much liek that of the 4th to 12th century.
DARA
In released photo predating their release of their second album “To Anyone”, a video still from title track “Can’t Nobody” shows Dara with a new look draped heavily in frabric as if she had been wearing a dalmatica, which was a tunic after A.D. 1000, which had a more evolved form of the tunic with the sleeves closely fitted to the arms and the waist line closely fitted by a belt of some sort. I wonder what people would think if Empress Theodora showed that much skin.
BOM
Park Bom, the oldest of 2NE1, Has the strongest voice but has the most feminine of style. She has been seen in promotion pre-comeback stage wearing something similar to a Chasuble which is an evolved form of a Roman cape worn by clergy with sides cut shorter for the movement of the arms. She can always be seen wearing the shortest of dresses out of the four girls but less material doensn’t mean a toned down sense of style, the tunic like dress she is wearing is inspired by the elaborately patterned rondels and tunica tularis. The embellishments and details are inspired by the luxurious jewels and patterns created by the people of the Byzantine Era.
CL
Chae-Rin Lee or commonly known as CL the one and only baddest female, the group leader is always ahead of the game in being a fashion icon of the Asian continent. Her edgy and daring style like in promotional photoshoots for their “Can’t Nobody” video shows her in a red studded jacket with a high collar closely resembling an Amice worn by priests saying mass. She has been seen in photos from Me2Day, a daily photo blogging site by the members of 2NE1 themselves wearing a large necklace like ones worn by emporesses over their paludamentum on the neck of the dresses. 2NE1’s fanbase, named Blackjacks, expect nothing less. CL, she’s the queen.
BEAUTIFUL,DIRTY,RICH ...go from dark ages to show stopping 19
...The Dark Ages, was a time named after the
status of people as they all lived very unhealthy lifestyles as the Church dictated the social norms of society, ultimately deeming most acts as well as ways of dress as sinful. The way of life during the Dark to the Middle Ages progressively got better, though it was majorly unsanitary and way of dress was dicted by the chruch. However, in the Middle Ages, there was a rebellion to these dictated social norms of the Dark Ages in the Middle Ages where we see form and shape come to long gowns as well as risque attempts at being fashionable. Fit, cut, and style became relevant again. Both men and women had become more and more brave with that they were wearing, each being more and more sophisticated as well as an improvement in the production of fashion through patternmaking, equipment, as well as details and textiles. And the increased use of the handbag opens up more doors for luxury items.
....LADY GAGA, embraces her dark side with a crown pointing towards the Heavems. Her rebellious style is remnant of the women of the Middle Ages. Fashion growth, like GAGA can’t be stopped. Even by the Inquisition.
By: Jason Le
RED CARPET READY
Middle Ages inspired Red Carpet Styles Beyonce gracefully takes the stage for a performance in a luxuriously full empire waited gown in canary. It is very similar to that of a houppelande belted above the anatomical waistline to give that empire waist look. Serena Williams gets risky with her houppelande with Hell’s windows, as deemed in the Middle ages, created by women rebelling against the Dark Ages dictation on dress, but this look woudl get you executed. Angelina Jolie glows as she was pregnant in this dyed brown gown similar to a surcote of the 1300AD -1340AD period.
DETAIL ORIENTATION Rachel Zoe Poses for a Vera Wang campaign with a jewelled collar very popularized int he mid to end of the Middle Ages. Kim Kardashian is fearless and fierce strolling around at night with her fur gillet. But I doubt its sable, ermine, minivere, fox, cat, or vair. Because with thos esunglasses at night, She can’t possibly see PETA coming for her.
Lady Gaga Steps out with her purple hair towering almost 2 feet above her head as if she is wearing aHennin. At least its not a yard long with a veil. But its Gaga. Eventually.
Rihanna works the white carpet with Member’s Only Liquid Leggings, very similar to the fancy styklings of a partihose for men of the Middle Ages. Nicole Ritchie does her daily errands with a Chain-Quilted Chanel bag. Purses were a big craze then, and now they’re stull a big trend, but they jsut got really big. Period.
High School Musical Star, Vanessa Hudgens Steps onto the red carpet in some pointed toe heels much liek that of a poulain for men.. imagine, with her celebrity status, those points would have been 20 inches!
DITA-LIGHTFULLNESS ...enlightening styles for men and women 25
...The Renaissance, between 1500s and the 1600s was a time where there
was a rise fo the mercahnt class. This significance was the creation of specialty shops, the increase in use and imports of textiles like chiffons, silks, and satins. The increase in specialty shops offered services to compliment the ever changing trends of the middle merchant class. Though there was stilla working class, the merchant class had an increase in numbers and finances to enjoy the lavishness of the times. The creation of the printing press allowed for mass marketing of new stylkes and advertisements. with wealthy families having a surplus of money to spend on fashion, dressmakers worked everyday to hand sew all the glamorous looks. When we say beauty is pain, we dont realize how much pain it is to look and feel beautiful during the renaissance. The idea of a slim figure for women and a bulky built look for men made fashion statements the have been lifted, tucked, and pulled all the way to the modern day.
...DITA VON TEESE, the sexy and royally classy celebrity manages to make all the Romeo’s of this time period kill themselves for her body conscious style. Wherefore art thou Romeo? Looks for lovers to hit the town classy.
By: Jason Le By: Jason Le
Women of the Renaissance we body conscious. Fuller at the bottom tight on the waist. Though its not always appropriate or flattering to wear a fuller skirt these days, the options are infinite in slenderizing the body for a sexy look with out the metal corset or the fullness of a farthingale to fill up your skirt. Now both the wealthy and the average consumer can meet in the middle with looks. Meaning, budget conscious ladies, you can unwrap your bumroll and breathe a little easier. As much as you can in a corset and bandage dress. The Banadage dress by Herve Leger is the signature look of the brand. This look slims, tones, and hides imperfections these starlets and you may think you have. With a variety and range of colors and cuts, you are destined to find your perfect dress for the night out on the rown But really, what do theres young starlets have to hide, tuck, and suck in?
BODY-CONSCIOUS
GET THIS LOOK Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Parents of 6 kids ahve always looked put together and great together. These charitable duo manage to look glamorous and fit everytime they take a night out on the town. To get the look like Brad, stay away from a King Henry the 8th’s fuller figure and go for a more fitted version of the doublet underneath a fitted matching blazer. break up the formalities with a knit scarf instead of a jewelled collar that men of the Renaissance had an afinity to. Instead of cullots, go for a more fitted look with a dark resin washed jean, remember to keep it slim to keep yourself sleek. And dont forget to leave your codpiece wither inside your trousers or at home. That is jsut TMI, FYI.
STARCROSSEDLOVERS To achieve Angelina’s look, you can always slip on a sexy body hugging dress. You don’t need to go all out for an Herve Leger BodyCon dress to anhance and lift, you jsut need a nice dress with a corset built in. Your look that nigth will be seamless, timeless, and without painful metals. Sitting is possible in this. Pair both of these looks witha square-toed shoe to modernise the duckbill for a flattering elongated toe for men and a hidden platform for height for women. Nude heels go with almost every look. Adding a hanging leather shoulder bag for women will be both helpful to keep your red lipstick and powder in and you wont have to worry about clutching it. But men, this isnt the Renaissance, you dont need to carry a purse. We understand it IS European, but you might not be.
VERSIZE AND FITTED ...17th century BIGBANG Fashion Theory
By: Jason Le
29
....BIG BANG continues to take the world of music and fashion by storm. They constantly keep up witht he fashion trends and go beyond it to break lines of gender specific clothing and turn up the volume...
...The 17th century was the takeover of fashion by the French. The centralizaiton
of fashion to be housed in France is very simlar to today. But instead of Milan, the center of fashion laid with Louis XIV in Versailles where modern day fashion shows would be events for review. In othe rparts of the world during the 1600s to the 1700s BC, styles reflected cultural ideologies such as the Puritan style of England and the Americas and the spanish conservative styles. The distinction between the Cavalier style and the Puritan, or Round Head style reflects the political and scoial ideologies of the different groups. The more lavishly dressed cavaliers were Royalist sympathizers and Puritans were more subdued and drab dressed in more functional plain clothing. Fashions of both have a great effect on the fashions today. The fusion of both styles, cavalier more feminine cuts and embellishments and the puritan simplicity and utility, we find a great array of clothing for men. Korean HipHop/Pop Band Big Bang take these styles and spin it and are style icons of the Asian continent. Their personalities with their style of dress range from ornate to simple but they always look put together.
WHO WEARS WHAT? ...inside BIGBANG’s wardrobe Band Leader G-Dragon is always mixing and maching his clothing. Even with clothes designed for women. With hsi small frame and his edgy style, you cant even tell. Maybe their little sister band 2NE1 is borrowing his clothes other than the other way around? GD is seen wearing a fur collar blazer. The collar is very remnant of the fallen lace ruff but in fur. This style is even more soft than the lace, but almost as upright as a ruff collar.
G-DRAGON T.O.P. with his deep voice may seem like the manliest guy out there. Granted, he probably is, he still manages to turn it up by wearing pieces much like the mandillion, an earlier form of a mandarin collar blazer but has the elements of 17th century embellishment in the Cyon Lollipop 2 commercial. The vibrant colors on a plain blazer makes it fun as well as styles a plan puritan-esque feeling to a simple coat.
T.O.P. 31
Seungry, V.I.P. can be seen in a modern day balagny, or cape/cloack of french military heroes. But this cape is more scarf-like and lighter. However, Seungri DID just recently serve his two years in the Korean Army as all Korean men are required to do after their 18th brithday. At least they get a choice when they feel like serving.
SEUNGRI TaeYang, the youngest of the band has his own personal style. But his signature is the cap. much more subtle, rounded and modern than the copotain style hat, that looks almost close to a witch’s hat, a normal unbent wide beaked 59FIFTY cap in an assortment of styles and colors, Taeyang always has a new hat on. Exclusive 59-FIFTY caps are only sold overseas. It doesnt look like the U.S. will be getting the limited edition Star Wars soon.
TAEYANG DaeSung pays homage to a 17th century cravats which is a long narrow, scarflike piece worn instead of a lace collar on top of a surtote, modern day long peacoat. As named the unpretty one earlier on in their career, Daesung has crated a great fanbase for his comedic style and solo career during band hiatus. Daesung performed his own youngest form of korean pop songs called trot songs. This high energy matches Daesungs personaility.
DAESUNG
...The 18th century was a period of
restoration. Along with this politcal change when King Louis XVI took the throne, he took on a wife as well named Marie Antoinette. Marie Antoinette, an Austrian had changed the way that fashion, luxury, and policy of the French Government. In the 18th century, we are able to see the shortening of a dress as walking used ot be a problem. Though there is still a distinguishing name for each type of dress according to length, this marks the evolution of the way women were allowed to dress in a social arena. The gowns of women have become more and more widened at the sides once again for a fuller effect but still have added decoration to the bodice with a lowered neckline for cleavage. The stylings and the fashion forward behavior of MArie Antoinette has been said to be an issue that sparked the French Revolution due to her lack of empathy for the country’s financial wellfare, her fashion sense will always be one of many large contributions to couture and ready-to-wear party dresses today.

VALENTIN YUDASHKIN KRISTIAN AADNEVIK JASPER GARDIVA
FILHAS DE GAIA HERVE LEGER
Much of the short cocktail dress, the party dresses have a very similar flair to them that catches the theme of the 18th century. Each of these are wider at the waist and have the feminine appeal to them. However, the Kristian Aadnevik piece looks as though it has a corset sewn itnto it to give a lifted and slimmed torso. The Valentin Yudaskin piece has the lowered neckline liek the sillhouette of a gown circa 1700s. The Jasper Gardiva piece has a chemise appeal but with less ruffles for the sleeves and it is exposed with out an overcoat, robe a la anglaise. The Filhas de Gaia number has the feeling of the panniers to wided the shape of the dress but all around rather than jutting out the sides of the hips. and the Herve Leger bandage dess has the center panelling appeal of the decorative and removable echelles.
YOU’RE LATE FOR TEA The Louis heel, once a staple in fashion in the 18th century has been reborn and is alive and well. Now coined the bootie shoe, we find that many styles are becoming more and more like history repeating itself. The quality of the shoe is probably a lot better than a wooden clog and easier to walk in too. You can pair your day look with an oversized hat. Now a symbol of luxury such as in resort lines and accessory for a day at the Del Mar Race Track,, the rebirth or the leghorn straw hat is always simple, delicate and a greate piece to shade you from blistering heat and skin damaging sun rays. This plus sunblock does wonders.

DENNIS BASSO
HERVE LEGER
Gowns of today, couture, runway and ready-to-wear have the 18th century appeal to them. The fullness of a Frank Sorbier resembles the polonaise, a hooped overskirt. The intricate detailing of AcquaStudio’s gown is similar to the hairstyles of women of the 18th century, the fullness on top and the sides are very remnant of a hedgehog style. The Nicole Abramoff piece has the light airyness of a short sleeved chemise. The silhouette of the Dennis Basso is very similar to the mantua-style gown which falls fromt he shoulders to the floor, or even a Saque, an unbelted gown. The Herve Leger piece is continues the french 18th century style through its intricate weaving liek ribbons on an echilles. Each gown has its own style but have sassiness, elegance, and beauty to refine any woman.

For a clean glamorous look, an up-do is always great so you can pair it with large statement making earrings or even show off back details.
VINI - VIDI - VICI ...men who dress for success
...The 19th century was a period of social change, mobility
and political conflict. Revolutions broke out all throughout Europe during the Directoire Period and the Empire Period. The revolutionaries traded their aristocratic kneee-breeches in for some trousers as a symbol of change and liberation from aristocracy. The adoption of Roman and Greek politics shaped the way that women had dressed during this period. Menswear had become more and more gender defined. Along with the industrial revolution, the change in clothing for men was for utility, simplicity, and symbolism of the working class. Style and imagination comes from the Romanticism period (1820’s-1850’s) allowing for more free expression of tastes, emotion and turmoil. This was a small rebellion to the current state of the social hierarchies and the attempts in reviving small fleurs of the old styles of dress. The evolution of menswear moves into the Crinoline Period of the 1850s and on. Though many changes were in womenswear, it is evident that there was a constant upsurge of attempts in reviving similar styles for everyday clothing as the different time periods in history. This sets and example for how today, we see that fashion is just revival of olf staple looks to become mroe modern pieces for us during ReadyTo-Wear lines. The names of garments become more and more familiar to the average consumer even though the silhouettes are resonating images of influential pieces and looks, the classification of looks as well as the standardization of how looks are created, cut and advertised becomes the sasme. With the mass produciton of sewing machines, garments can become more sturdy and production of garments are much more efficient to produce for the working class.

Be the best dressed “Dandy” in town. As a male fashionista, you should always look put together. A coat and trousers just isnt enough sometimes. Much like the 19th century, boots are still in. Especially elastic sided boots. These make putting them on and kicking them off to relax are so much easier. Or, you can be stylish without focing yourself to go partially blind like some men of the 19th century jsut to be able to wear quizzing glasses, just buy some non-prescriptive glasses to give yourself a more refined studious prep look. Anothe roption is to throw on a bold skinny tie thats tied with a windsor knot. its a more modern version of a cravat, virtually the same thing but wider and less attractive. After youve decided on what to wear, the big question is, how do you do your do? Chace Crawford takes it to a refined and sophisticated look with hair short and clean. He opted to not have muttonchops, side facial hair. I think that was a good idea on his stylist’s part.
GARB:
FINISHING TOUCHES
Hip Hop artists today have become mroe and more refined. Taking upon the Napoleon empire style. This refined look is translated from coast to coast with more and more artists looking professional when needed. Big Bang is all dressed up wtih each member wearing a different version of the coats of the 19th century. while most are wearing a version of a sack coat, second to the left, GD is wearing a single breasted version of the Frock Coat. Taeyang, in the middle, is seen weaing a vest. a Far cry form the napoleon Era in the United States duringthe 19th century of the 1950s we can see this evolution of the jacket from jacket to what we now classify as a blazer. The Sack Jacket much like the one T.O.P. is wearing, fourth member, is a lounge jacket made of velvet. We see rappers such as Sean Diddy Combs and Jay-Z looking a lot more cleaned up from their old style of loose fitting clothes and activewear. The refined look may come from age but this tuxedo style is a far shorter version of the tailcoat that you usually see with musicians that play an instrument. We see artist Kanye West embrace the preppy refined look from casual wear to performance garb. Though it doesnt seem as much has changed for menswear from the Crinoline Period of the 1850’s. We can see the evolution from the Napoleonic Era to the evolution of menswear staples. Without the refinement of the suit jacket during this empire there would be not be the simplicity of the modern suit jacket, peacoat, dinner jacket, and blazer. The Romantic Period between the Napoleonic Empire refined the looks making them sleeker, cleaner, and form fitting for men without the extremes of the 17th century of the 18th century. There is no longer need for cod pieces, padded doublets, ruffs, and even walking sticks. The modern man has become more refined. These artists are always dressed to impress their fanbase and give an overall appealing look to othe rgenerations.
