FINANCE by Jeff Yeager
Give It Up for Big Savings For most people, it’s all about how to get more for less, when the real lesson is that less can often be more.
U
nless you lived through the Great Depression, our nation is currently in the throes of the most challenging economic times any of us have ever faced. Yet so much of the talk in the media these days about ways we can “economize” seems to be too little, too late, and they miss a much more important issue all together. We shouldn’t be asking ourselves “How can we afford it?” Instead, we should be asking ourselves, “Do we really need it?” And if we don’t buy it, “How will our lives be affected, for better or worse?”
For most people, it’s all about how to get more for less, when the real lesson of the day might be in understanding that less can often be more. Here are ten fairly radical lifestyle changes to consider. Adopt even one or two of these changes and you’ll not only save some serious money, you might just be happier in the end. Cancel Your Cell Phone. Only fifteen or so years ago, cell phones were virtually nonexistent, and the world seemed to work okay. Roughly 20% of American households (including mine) still don’t own a cell phone, and we manage to survive. The average cell phone plan costs more than $100 a month or $1,200 a year, and a study recently reported in the Christian Science Monitor found that the actual average cost of using a cell phone is more than $3 a minute, when you factor in unused minutes and add-on fees. Give Up Cable. Like cell phones, the average cost of most cable plans is about $100 a month or $1,200 a year. At our house, our digital-to-analog converter box is hooked up to the rabbit ears and ready to fly, and our local public library is full of DVDs we can borrow for free. That extra $1,200 sure will buy us a heck of a lot of popcorn. 6

Get Rid of Your Second or Third Car. The average American household now owns about 2.5 vehicles. The AAA says that the actual cost to drive the average car down the road is more than $1 per mile by the time you factor in the cost of the car, depreciation, insurance, repairs, gas, licenses and taxes. You could easily save thousands of dollars a year by sharing a single car, coordinating trips, taking public transportation, and so on. And Mother Earth will thank you too. Cancel Your Gym Membership. Go to the local thrift store, buy yourself an inexpensive used bicycle, and then ride it to the gym to cancel your membership. The average gym membership now costs about $50 per month, or $600 per year. Bicycling or walking when you run errands, and doing your own household chores (e.g. cutting your own grass, washing your car, etc.) rather than paying to have them done for you will keep you physically and fiscally fit. Prepare More Meals at Home. About 42% of what Americans spend on food is for meals prepared outside the home (i.e. in restaurants, carryout, fast food, etc.). That’s equivalent to about $2,500 for the average U.S. family. You should be able to prepare those same meals at home for about 80% less, or an annual savings of roughly $2,000. Stop Drinking Bottled Water. According to an article in the New York Times, if you drink only bottled water you’ll spend about $1,400 annually to get your recommended daily amount of H2O, as opposed to .49 cents for a year’s supply of just-as-healthy tap water. Use the calculator at NewDream.org to calculate your savings based on actual consumption. It’s also worth noting that public tap water is subject to far greater safety standards and inspections than most bottled water. Wear Out Your Clothing. Only a small fraction of the clothing we throw away in the U.S. is “worn out,” meaning it’s threadbare or horribly stained. Clearly most of us have more than enough clothes in our closets that we could easily go for six month or a year, or even longer, without needing to buy anything new. The average American family spends roughly $1,800 on clothing per year. Stop Using Credit Cards. Giving up your credit cards can save you big money in annual card fees, late charges, and interest payments, but the biggest savings will probably come from buying and spending less. Studies consistently show that most consumers a far more likely to buy something when they plan to pay with a credit card rather than with cash, and one study showed that credit card purchasers were, on average, willing to pay 30% more for the exact same item than they would be willing to pay if they were paying in cash.

Call NOW fOr a frEE IN-hOmE DEsIgN CONsultatION! Give up College Room and Board. The average cost of student room and board at colleges and universities is more than $10,000 per year. Largely gone were the days when kids are willing to live with their parents and attend a local community college or universities. Instead, they go away to school, and often rack up tens of thousands of dollars in student loans, in part because they’re paying for room and board. Ironically, when they graduate, they’re so far in debt that then move back home with mom and dad! Kick Your Bad Habits. What better time to kick bad habits like smoking, drinking and gambling? These are not only things that cost you money now, but are likely to cost you even more in the future as a result of health, medical and other personal problems down the road. Smoking a pack of cigarettes a day is probably costing you about $1,800 a year, or more than $50,000 if you live long enough to smoke for 30 years. Buying a case of beer a week is likely to cost you more than $1,000 a year, and even a few lottery tickets a week is probably costing you hundreds of dollars every year. Remember, the easiest way to double your money these days is to fold it in half and put it back in your wallet. Live Simple and Stay Cheap!

Finance By Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz
A Financial "TO-DO" List Developing good habits during your working years will put you in better financial shape regardless of the economic conditions.
I
n the face of continuing economic challenges, more and more people are asking me for new ways to handle their finances. They’re more than worried—some are downright scared that they’ll never reach the financial dreams they once had for themselves and their families. Granted, many of us are confronting new financial questions, but that doesn’t mean the answers have to be new. In fact, I believe that the financial advice that made good sense in the past still makes sense today. You probably heard this advice from your parents or grandparents or have given it to your own kids: live within your means, save for the future, create an emergency fund and stay out of debt. I know these are general ideas that are easy to talk about. The tricky part is to put them into practice, especially today. So to help you, I’ve created a kind of “to do” list for financial security. I’ve started with what I think everyone should do all the time (and especially in times like these) and then added on some age-specific ideas of what you can do to make sure you’re on top of things. What Everyone Can Do to Get Through Today’s Crunch. Here are some essential things that everyone needs to take care of. You may have heard them before, but they’re worth repeating: • If you don’t have a budget, create one and live within it. When you need to cut back, start with all those “nice to haves” like eating out, travel and entertainment. Better to use that extra money to build up your emergency fund. • Make sure there’s enough in your emergency fund to cover a minimum of three months of essential expenses and keep this money easily accessible. Depending on your job security and other assets, you may want to have up to twelve months of expenses in reserve. • Stay on top of credit card debt, paying it off if possible. If you’re carrying a balance, think about ways to reduce your interest rate. Can you negotiate with your credit card company? Would a home equity loan be a better way to pay off the balance? • Make saving for retirement a top priority. Contribute to your retirement accounts at least to take advantage of any employer match. Don’t leave this “free” money on the table. What To Do at 20. To give yourself a good start, be sure to live within your budget, and don’t be tempted to overspend. When it comes to credit cards, try not to carry a balance. With this under control you 8
April 17 - May 15 •
www.shoppingsense.biz
can then: • Start saving for retirement. If you start putting aside 10 percent of your yearly salary now, and keep saving at this rate throughout your working life, you should be in good shape when you reach retirement age. • Protect yourself—and your finances—with adequate health insurance. Being young and healthy is no guarantee against an accident or unexpected illness, either of which could cost many thousands of dollars. • Begin to invest for the long term. Remember, it’s not only how much you have to invest, but also how long you have to invest that counts. And given current market prices, I believe the stock market potentially presents a great long-term opportunity. What To Do at 30. Your financial obligations may be greater now as you consider buying a home or having a family. Keep these things in mind as you plan for the future: • If you’re just starting to save for retirement, try to set aside 15 to 20 percent of your annual salary in your 401(k), an IRA or another taxadvantaged account. You’re still young enough to potentially be able to benefit from today’s stock market prices. • Don’t be tempted to overextend yourself to buy a home. Remember, a fixed mortgage offers the maximum security over the long term. • If you have children, be sure to set up a will and choose guardians. Also think about life insurance, and start to save for college as early as you can. What To Do at 40. You’re beginning your peak earning years but, at the same time, retirement isn’t that far off. To protect yourself be sure to: • Keep retirement savings a priority. If you’re just getting started saving, you’ll need to set aside at least 25 percent of your annual salary in a taxadvantaged account for the rest of your working life. • Make sure that you have adequate disability insurance. If your employer doesn’t provide enough, look into an independent policy. What To Do at 50. Start by carefully assessing your retirement needs, your expenses and sources of income, and how close you are to meeting your goals. Then, as you get closer to retirement: • Look at your investment strategy, and consider slowly shifting to a more conservative asset allocation. • Think about purchasing long-term-care insurance.
Counter Top Re-surfacing • Check with Social Security to make sure your earnings records are accurate. • Review your estate plan or set one up if you haven’t already. What to do at 60. At this point in your life, you may be getting close to retirement. As this important transition approaches: • Think carefully about how to turn your lifetime of savings into a reliable stream of income that can sustain you for many years to come. This is a good time to think about reviewing your plans with a trusted financial advisor. • Plan when to take your Social Security benefits. If you can hold off until you’re 70, you’ll receive the maximum amount each month. • You’ll be eligible for Medicare benefits starting at age 65. If you plan to stop working earlier, make sure you have adequate health insurance. Improving Financial Habits at Any Age. The ultimate goal of this financial advice is to help you keep your head above water during the hard times and keep moving ahead during the good times. Use this list to improve your financial habits now, and you’ll not only be better able to survive today’s difficulties, you’ll be poised to make the most of your opportunities when things turn around. Care for Your Car with Spring Maintenance This spring, start a maintenance program for your car to help it last as long as possible.
P
rotecting your vehicle does not have to be difficult. With a little care and some proper planning, it is possible to have a reliable means of transportation for many years to come. If you want your car to last longer than your car payment, it is important to institute a good program of preventative maintenance. Each season comes with its own maintenance challenges, but spring maintenance is among the most important. After all, many drivers see the amount of driving they do spike as the summer season approaches. Whether it is heading out to that long-awaited vacation or just driving to the closest fishing hole, cars, trucks and SUVs get lots of use in the summertime. Taking the time to prepare the car for the rigors of summer driving by following a springtime maintenance program is a smart idea.
Take it to a Pro One of the most critical parts of the spring maintenance program should be a thorough examination of the vehicle by a qualified mechanic. It is important to examine the car thoroughly in order to avoid any problems down the road. It is important, of course, to find a well qualified, honest mechanic, and that can be a difficult task in itself. One of the best ways to find a great mechanic is through word of mouth. It does not take long for the word to get out about mechanics, both good and bad. Asking around is a great way to know which neighborhood mechanics can be trusted and which ones will take you for a ride. After you have found the perfect mechanic, it is important to have them look over the condition of the vehicle carefully. One area of particular scrutiny should be the condition of belts, clamps and hoses. Simply replacing a worn radiator hose before it breaks, or a worn out belt before it snaps, can save you days of hassle and hundreds of dollars.
Keep it Cool Springtime is also the perfect time to check the air conditioner for 10
April 17 - May 15 •
www.shoppingsense.biz
proper operation. Even if the weather outside is still chilly, it is a good idea to run the air conditioner for a few minutes every month to keep the system well lubricated and in good working order. If additional coolant is needed for the air conditioner, it is important to add it in the spring, before the first hot day hits.
Essential Tools for Car Maintenance If you’re serious about good car maintenance this spring, make sure these tools are on your checklist: Car jack/jack stands Elevating the car is an essential task for a lot of minor tasks and repairs, so having the proper equipment on hand is a smart choice. Also, drivers should have a jack and spare tire in the car at all times in case of a flat. Oil Wrench To make those oil changes every 3,000 miles a little easier, be sure to add an oil wrench to your tool kit. This way, you can easily remove the oil filter yourself, change the oil, and get on with your day. Funnel A funnel is an essential tool to prevent messy and potentially damaging spills while changing your car’s fluids. Be sure to keep one on hand for oil changes and other procedures. Pressure Gauge Properly inflated tires last longer, and can actually improve your gas mileage. Make sure you purchase a good-quality gauge and check your tires frequently.
The spring maintenance window is also a great time to address those issues you have been putting off through the winter. If the vehicle has been experiencing hard starts, a rough idle or begun to stall, it is important to have those issues diagnosed and addressed before the summer driving season begins. Dealing with minor problems can prevent them from becoming major (and expensive) problems down the road. n SS

Small-Space Gardening Just because you live in the city or have a small yard doesn’t mean you can’t have a garden.
T
here’s nothing quite as satisfying as growing and eating your own vegetables. Not only are you guaranteed fresh, natural produce, you can also save money at the grocery store. But what if you have a very small yard, or even no yard at all? Relax! Even people with postagestamp sized yards can grow a bountiful garden with a little planning.
Survey the Space Before you begin, assess the space you have available. To be successful, crops need a minimum of six hours of direct sunlight per day. Don’t be afraid to mix vegetables in with flowers, or even plant along the side of the house. Once your garden begins to grow, the plants will provide great color and texture, and can be just as attractive as the less practical, more ornamental variety. Once you have determined the location for your small space garden, you will need to do some research. The goal is to make the most of every inch of space. Look for vegetables that grow up rather than out. For example, while pumpkin plants will sprawl all over the garden, pole beans grow tall and produce more yield per square inch. Tomatoes
12

www.shoppingsense.biz
can be pruned to grow tall as well. Beets, carrots, leaf lettuce, peppers, radishes and cucumbers are also good choices for small space gardens.
Plan Your Plants Decide whether you want to grow your plants from seed or purchase plants that are ready to put into the ground. Growing from seed is less expensive, but it is best if you start them inside prior to planting. If you decide to go with seeds, check the backs of the seed packets to determine the length of time it takes to get the seeds started, and then how long they will take to come to fruition. Give yourself plenty of time to start the seeds so that the tender young plants can be put outside after the threat of frost has passed. Before you plant anything, make a list of what you want to grow, check the spacing required for the plants and then draw out a rough plot of your garden. Try to place the taller plants in the back, or down one side to make it easier to get through for watering, weeding and fertilizing. Forget about neat, tidy rows. Mark off square plots for specific plants and then plant them close together. You can always thin things out later if the plants are too crowded. This will also leave less space for weeds. If you have a sunny deck or porch, consider container gardening. This will maximize the space you have available and lead to a higher yield. Herbs do very nicely in pots, and you can also grow individual tomato plants, bush beans and even squash in containers. Your containers don’t have to be fancy, but they should provide adequate drainage and absorption. Remember that you will have to water the plants growing in containers twice as often as those planted in the yard, and may have to move them around to maximize their exposure to the sun. Weed when necessary, and watch for any kind of insect infestation. Use insecticides sparingly. You might also want to consider enclosing the area to protect it from harm from either humans or wild animals. Even cats can be destructive to immature plantings. Before long, you will see the first fruits of your labor. Generally, greens, beans, peas, radishes and cucumbers will come in first, followed by squash and tomatoes. Pick vegetables as they are ready, and freeze what you can’t eat. Soon you will have an abundance of fresh vegetables at your doorstep, and continue to harvest until the first frost. Remember, no space is too small for a garden. n SS

Add depth to your room by choosing furniture in richer shades like cherrywood or rosewood furniture. Furniture made of blond woods such as maple or ash will be too pale for a neutral color scheme. For bedrooms, however, white-painted furniture always works, although wood tones provide a good alternative.
Choose sunshine colors that will lend your rooms light and warmth. Creams with a tint of yellow or orange will look cheerful at this time of the year. If you do not wish to paint the complete room in one single color, select a compatible palette like cream and honey, cream and golden yellow or yellow and orange. Paint the entire room with a warm cream shade and then accentuate with the golden hues. Paint all dark corners with the brighter shade and reserve the lighter shade for longer surfaces.
Linens and Fabrics White linen curtains, cream or yellow colored cushions, or rugs and light-colored slipcovers will give the room a clean and uncluttered feel. To break the monotony, choose fabrics with pinstripes, checks or polka dots in similar, toned-down hues like yellow-honey or cream-yellow. Remove
Furniture
Mirrors and Glass Accessories Make the most of natural light by using mirrors like framed photographs by pairing 2 to 3 various shaped and sized mirrors on one wall. Clean all mirrors daily so they reflect sunlight brightly. Other glass accessories, crystals and stained glass windows will also enhance the bright, sunny look of your rooms. Use them in various places, grouping some and placing some apart.
Accessorize and Accentuate Accessorizing and accentuating are doubtlessly the most important parts in decorating. They provide character to your home. Once you have created the soft, mellow look choosing creams, yellows and whites so far, accessorizing will help you give your decor the final touch. You can continue the soft look by adding white china, yellow flowers, honey-colored rugs or lampshades. Use candles in lovely spring shades. You can also choose to accentuate with wooden accessories. Choose baskets and wooden boxes of several shapes and sizes. Add wooden artifacts and finish the look with cane or rattan chairs. For a more dramatic look, add accessories in a contrasting color. Choose red or blue cushions, flower vases and lampshades.
Some things to keep in mind 1. Keep your spring decorations as clutter-free as possible. 2. L eave lots of open space to make sure your house is fresh and airy. 3. T hink of ways to bring natural sunshine inside such as pulling back curtains with curtain-holders and tie-backs. 4. R eplace all dark-colored accessories with those in lighter shades. n SS 14

Saving Money on Makeup Find out how you can look glamorous even when your budget is tight
I
t may feel glamorous to buy your makeup from the cosmetics counter at a swanky department store, but the glow will quickly fade when the credit card bill arrives. The cost of high-end designer makeup brands such as Estée Lauder and Lancôme can really take a bite out of your budget. The reality is that drugstore makeup can provide many of the same benefits as designer cosmetics if chosen properly. Same Product, Different Packaging. It might surprise you to learn that drugstore makeup may come off the same assembly line as the designer makeup lines you buy at cosmetic counters. Although they may not have the same fancy packaging or a big name on the cover, it may be the same product that’s sold at the cosmetic counter of your local department store. The key is to learn to recognize a quality cosmetic product regardless of its packaging. Try Before You Buy. One of the advantages of buying makeup at the cosmetics counter is the opportunity to try it on before you buy it. In most cases, you’re not going to have the opportunity to do this if you purchase drugstore makeup. Although you may find testers for a few products, the selection will be limited. By the way, it’s best to try these products only on your hand for sanitary reasons. Color Matching. The other frustrating drawback of buying drugstore makeup is the color that’s shown on the outer packaging for lipsticks and blush is almost never the color you get when you open the container. Keep in mind that because you can’t see the color you’re going to make some mistakes. The good news is most drugstores have a one hundred percent satisfaction return policy on cosmetic items even if you’ve used them. Once you’ve made your mistakes and found products that really work for you, you can buy them regularly with confidence and realize a significant savings. Drugstore or Department Store? When buying drugstore makeup, it’s important to consider which products are best purchased there and which ones are best bought at a cosmetic counter. In general, items like mascara, eye shadow, eyeliner, lipstick, lip liner and nail polish, if chosen well, will be of good quality if purchased from a drugstore. If you buy from a
reputable company such as L’Oréal or Almay you’re going to get quality comparable to what you’ll find at most cosmetic counters. Items you may want to purchase at a cosmetic counter are foundation, powder and possibly blush. These are items you’ll want to try before buying and they’re the products most likely to be of better quality at a cosmetic counter. Selecting a suitable foundation shade can be tricky and buying at a department store allows you to enlist the help of the makeup specialist. If you’ve always purchased cosmetics from a cosmetic counter and want to save a little money, give drugstore makeup a try. Before purchasing, verify that you can return an item if it doesn’t work for you. This will allow you to experiment a little and discover colors that really work for you. Once you’ve found products that work, you can buy them on a consistent basis. Your reward? You’ll no longer have to dread the credit card bill arriving. n SS

Extra Pasta
Crafting Clean-Up
I have a hard time judging how much pasta to cook for my family. Recently, I started freezing the leftover pasta. It works great to throw into a soup or even to take for lunch! —ViH
For doing crafts at the kitchen table, purchase a plastic table cloth or shower curtain at the dollar store and use it as a table cloth. I don’t even wipe it off when I finish. Instead, I just fold it up and stash it for next time. —TDM
Have a Smooth Stovetop? To clean your smooth top stove, sprinkle it with baking soda and then spray it with white vinegar. Let it sit for a few minutes and clean with a damp rag and hot water—it works great! Sometimes you have to use a little elbow grease on the stubborn grit, but it doesn’t take any longer than the expensive cleaner. —Susan LoV
Measuring Liquids in the Kitchen I have found an easy way to measure small amounts of liquids (for instance, a teaspoon of vanilla extract). I use the medicine spoons that the pharmacy sends with liquid medicine for my children. The spoons are easy to read and have an elevated side so you can rest the filled spoon on the counter until the liquid is needed. —Sally M.

Help With Pet Care With such hard economic times, it can be stressful to provide the care needed to keep our pets healthy. If you are anywhere near a Humane Society animal shelter, give them a call. Vet checkups, spay and neutering services, shots and even flea and heartworm preventative medications can be purchased for about half the price of the neighborhood vet. Support your vet when you can, but if it’s just too expensive, call the Humane Society. I have also heard that many food banks are now providing dog and cat food. If you are really in a bind, give them a call and get some help to keep your pets healthy. —Beth

The House Folder We are trying to sell our house. The job is made a little easier because of our house folder. I gathered various documents and papers and put each into a plastic cover and have them all corralled into a binder. These include things like utility bills, property tax statements, subdivision plot layout, subdivision rules and receipts on any repairs or upgrades to house (new lighting, new toilet, A/C repair, new roof, etc). Each of these items is dated. We also put in a floor plan and a landscape plan. Although the house has not yet sold, lookers have told us how much that folder helps. We leave it on the table for them to view, and we also gave a copy to our agent. —Dana P.

Creative Night Lights Need an inexpensive night light for little ones? Try putting one or two solar lights that you would normally put in your yard in a sunny window. They will stay lit all night without using any electricity. I especially the small flickering lights shaped like dragonflies that I found on a clearance rack this winter. —Angela S. in Lexington, MS
Pet Cage Bedding Our hamsters were having skin problems, so I went online to do some research. I found that the cedar chips I had been using could very well be the problem. In addition, they were possibly treated with chemicals that I don’t like to have around the house. I read that I could simply use old cotton clothing and towel bits torn into shreds to bed our hamsters’ cage. Our hamsters have never been happier. Their skin doesn’t seem to be an itchy problem for them anymore, and I figure that I’m saving around $50 a year. I loved that I was saving money, but once I saw our little hamster snoozing in a baby sock, using it as a sleeping bag, I was sold on the idea! —Jennifer in Rio del Mar, California
