Welcome to This Season at the Met The Met is one museum, but holds many worlds, and this season the reach of our global offerings is represented by two outstanding exhibitions. Lost Kingdoms: Hindu-Buddhist Sculpture of Early Southeast Asia, 5th to 8th Century dazzles and awes with monumental sculptures — many of which have never before been seen outside their home countries. And our Costume Institute show, Charles James: Beyond Fashion, expands our notions of how a designer works while inaugurating the new Anna Wintour Costume Center. Between these two stunning exhibitions, there are journeys to be made through every culture and medium — Garry Winogrand’s photographs, Goya’s paintings, Dan Graham’s architectural installation, among many others. I hope you’ll join us here soon.

This retrospective of one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century features approximately 175 of the artist’s best-known photographs from his 30-year career. Winogrand (1928–1984) emerged from the 1950s to become one of the principal voices of the eruptive 1960s and early 1970s. The show is the first reappraisal of the artist’s photographs since 1989. Organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Art, Washington. International tour sponsored by the Terra Foundation for American Art. Lost Kingdoms: Hindu-Buddhist Sculpture of Early Southeast Asia, 5th to 8th Century This first international loan exhibition devoted to the early art of Southeast Asia features the results of recent researches in art history and archaeology. The 160 sculptures on view—from Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), and Vietnam—provide a unique window onto these forgotten cultures. Charles James: Beyond Fashion This inaugural exhibition of the newly renovated Costume Institute examines the career of the legendary 20th-century Anglo-American couturier Charles James (1906–1978), whose ball gowns and innovative tailoring continue to influence fashion designers today. James’s revolutionary creative process is revealed through approximately 70 of his most notable designs, as well as sketches, patterns, swatches, video animations, and more.

The Roof Garden Commission: Dan Graham with Günther Vogt Part garden maze, part modernist skyscraper façade, Dan Graham’s installation comprises curves of steel and two-way mirrored glass set between ivy hedgerows in an entirely new terrain conceived in collaboration with Swiss landscape architect Günther Vogt. Employing references from historic garden design to contemporary architecture, Graham’s commission engages with issues of urbanity, public space, and the viewer’s own experience within it.

Goya and the Altamira Family One of the Museum’s most beloved Old Master paintings, the so-called Red Boy by Goya, is among five portraits of members of the Altamira family on view in this small exhibition. All but one are by Goya. This is the first time these family portraits are being seen together as a group. Made possible by the Placido Arango Fund. Organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art with the assistance of the Consulate of Spain in New York.

The Pre-Raphaelite Legacy: British Art and Design Some 30 works from across the Museum highlight the accomplishments of Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti from the 1860s through the 1890s. Their new vision of beauty, inspired by medieval and early Renaissance exemplars, produced a dynamic interaction between the fine and decorative arts. Sol LeWitt: Wall Drawing #370 In 1968 Sol LeWitt, a seminal practitioner of “Conceptual Art,” began designing wall compositions for limited duration within a broad context of architectural settings. At the Met, the 10 geometric figures set within squares were prepared by four drafters over 20 days and will remain on view until May 31, 2015, at which time they will be painted over. Mysticism and Music in Iran: The Art of Ostad Elahi (1895–1975) Ostad Elahi was a Persian thinker, musician, and jurist whose transformation of the art of tanbūr — an ancient longnecked lute — paralleled his innovative approach to the quest for self-knowledge. This presentation documents the inseparable, mutually transformative relationship between player and instrument by using rare instruments and artworks from the Museum’s collection.

The Flowering of Edo Period Painting: Japanese Masterworks from the Feinberg Collection This exhibition of one of the finest private collections of Japanese paintings outside Japan focuses on more than 90 masterworks dating to the Edo period (1615–1868). TALKS AND TOURS Presented by educators, curators, conservators, and advanced students of art history. They start in Gallery 534, Vélez Blanco Patio (VBP), unless noted at exhibition entrance. In addition, Museum-trained volunteers lead daily guided tours of the Met’s collection in English and other languages throughout the summer. From June 17 through August 8, college students also give regularly scheduled highlights and special topics tours as part of their summer internships. For both types of tours, check the website or inquire at the information desks for topics, schedule, and points of departure.
