Cubism: The Leonard A. Lauder Collection Cubism, the most influential art movement of the early 20th century, still resonates today. It destroyed traditional illusionism in painting and radically changed the way we see the world. The Leonard A. Lauder Collection, unsurpassed in its holdings of Cubist art, is now a promised gift to the Museum. On the occasion of this exhibition, the Collection is being shown in public for the first time—81 paintings, collages, drawings, and sculpture by the four preeminent Cubist artists: Georges Braque (French, 1882–1963), Juan Gris (Spanish, 1887–1927), Fernand Léger (French, 1881–1955), and Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973). Madame Cézanne Paul Cézanne’s paintings, drawings, and watercolors of his wife and most painted model, Hortense Fiquet, profoundly inflected his portrait practice for more than two decades. Lecture
Among the earliest wood sculptures preserved from Africa is a small group of masterpieces from southeastern Nigeria. Their subjects are seated figures of mother’s nurturing children and aggressive male warriors that were, for the most part, originally integral to carved drums at the epicenter of spiritual life in Mbembe communities. Here together for the first time are 16 surviving electrifying creations from this tradition.

Bartholomeus Spranger: Splendor and Eroticism in Imperial Prague A major force in European art in the late 16th century, Bartholomeus Spranger (1546–1611) was an excellent painter, draftsman, and etcher who employed a bravura technique and elegant style. This is the first exhibition in the world devoted to his rare paintings, drawings, and etchings. Made possible by the Placido Arango Fund and The Schiff Foundation.

Thomas Hart Benton's America Today Mural Rediscovered Missouri native Thomas Hart Benton (1889–1975) painted the 10-panel mural cycle America Today in 1930–31 to adorn a boardroom at New York’s New School for Social Research. Depicting a sweeping panorama of American life during the 1920s, it ranks among Benton’s most renowned works and as one of the most significant accomplishments in American art of the period. Grand Design: Pieter Coecke van Aelst and Renaissance Tapestry This first major monographic exhibition devoted to the great Netherlandish artist and Renaissance master Pieter Coecke van Aelst (1502–1550) explores his career, travel, and artistic daring. Uniquely, 19 of the spectacular Renaissance tapestries that were made to his designs are reunited with his exceptional drawings, rare panel paintings, and fascinating and influential printed works. The Al-Thani collection of Indian jeweled arts represents a collector’s fascination with royal works created for Indian nobility over a period of four hundred years. The collection also contains jewelry representing a wider international taste, such as Indian-inspired works by Cartier and other 20th-century and contemporary jewelers. Made possible by Cartier.

The Winchester Bible: A Masterpiece of Medieval Art
Ennion: Master of Roman Glass
The Winchester Bible, one of the pivotal landmarks in medieval art around 1200 and a treasure of Winchester Cathedral, was famous for its beauty and importance when it was made. It has been called one the greatest works of art ever produced in England. Two volumes are displayed together with the Morgan Leaf, which is the single most important full-page miniature from the Bible that was separated from it long ago, as well as with related objects from the Museum’s collection. Made possible by the Michel David-Weill Fund.

The most outstanding examples of firstcentury Roman mold-blown glass were produced by Ennion. With examples from collections in Israel, Europe, and America, this is the largest gathering of his work to be displayed in a special exhibition. Works signed by other glassworkers as well as a selection of other related mold-blown glass vessels illustrate the profound influence Ennion exerted on the nascent Roman glass industry. Assyria to Iberia at the Dawn of the Classical Age This landmark exhibition traces the deep roots of interaction between the ancient Near East and the lands along the shores of the Mediterranean, and their impact on the artistic traditions that developed in the region. Focusing on the early first millennium B.C., it draws on the world’s leading museum collections, bringing together works of art including sculptures and wall reliefs, carved ivories, metalwork, and jewelry.
