Inspired by the paintings of Edward Hopper and two emblems of American architecture, the iconic red barn and Bates mansion from Alfred Hitchcock’s film Psycho, British artist Cornelia Parker has created a thrilling and provocative site-specific installation on the Museum’s Roof Garden.
More than 170 examples of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear—from the early 20th century to the present—are featured in this intriguing exploration of the ways in which designers are reconciling the handmade and the machine-made in their creations.

Tools of Fashion: Hand and Machine
M2
For Andrew Bolton, The Met’s Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, the exhibition Manus × Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology is a celebration of the art of making. By challenging the long-held, conventional dichotomy between the handmade and machine-made, which at one time was the basis for the distinction between haute couture and prêt-à-porter, the show reveals how the hand (manus) and the machine (machina) work in unison to create fashion of exceptional originality and outstanding technical ingenuity. “Through the marriage of the handmade and the machine-made,” says Andrew, “a new aesthetic is emerging—one of exacting beauty and unfettered imaginings.” Since the Industrial Revolution, he continues, “the oppositional relationship between the hand and machine has played out in every sphere of artistic production, and perhaps no more so than in fashion. Indeed, following the birth of the haute couture in the mid-19th century, the culture of fashion came to be governed increasingly by the hand/machine dichotomy. Recently, the distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other.” Through more than 170 examples of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear, dating from the early 1900s to the present, the exhibition presents a series of case studies contrasting haute couture and ready-to-wear ensembles to unravel the realties and mythologies of the hand/machine conundrum. Intricate specialties for which haute couture is traditionally known—including metmuseum.org

embroidery, featherwork, artificial flowers, pleating, lacework, and leatherwork—are featured alongside ensembles made with innovative processes such as 3-D printing, circular knitting, computer modeling, bonding and laminating, laser cutting, and ultrasonic welding. Don’t miss this chance to see how fashion and technology are inextricably linked, more so now than ever before. The exhibition is on view through August 14 and features the creations of more than 50 designers, including Cristobal Balenciaga, Sarah Burton (Alexander McQueen), John Galliano (Christian Dior, Maison Margiela), Nicolas Ghesquière (Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton), Rei Kawakubo (Comme des Garçons), Karl Lagerfeld (Chanel), Alexander McQueen (Givenchy), Miuccia Prada, Yves Saint Laurent (Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent), and many others.

MAR 18–SEP 4, 2016 The question of when a work of art is finished has intrigued and driven the world’s greatest artists from the Renaissance to the present. This innovative exhibition brings together 190 of their works, many from The Met collection, to reveal the breadth and nuances behind these great artists’ understanding of the term “unfinished.” #MetUnfinished #MetBreuer
