Vigée Le Brun: Woman Artist in Revolutionary France Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (1755–1842), one of the finest 18th-century French painters, is among the most important of women artists. An autodidact with exceptional gifts as a portraitist, she was admitted to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1783 and exhibited at the Paris Salons. She was Marie Antoinette’s official painter before the French revolution, and afterward traveled widely and painted members of the royal families of Naples, Russia, and Prussia, and princely sitters of various nationalities. This is the first retrospective and only the second exhibition devoted to the artist in modern times. #VigeeLeBrun Made possible by the Gail and Parker Gilbert Fund, the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, and the Diane W. and James E. Kongo: Power and Majesty Conceived to inspire awe for the abstract force of law and order, to heal petitioners, and promote trade, the electrifying Mangaaka Power Figure has come to epitomize Kongo civilization in the West. Kongo artists were responsible for a range of artistic forms, including elegant mother and child figures, finely embroidered raffia textiles, and exquisitely carved ivory tusks. Some 140 Central African masterpieces, including, for the first time, 15 of the sensational monumental Mangaaka Power Figures, are presented in historical context and in relation to the earliest Kongo creations owned by European princes during the Renaissance. #KongoPower Made possible by the Gail and Parker Gilbert Fund and the Diane W. and James E. The Power of Prints: The Legacy of William M. Ivins and A. Hyatt Mayor Commemorating the centennial of the Met’s Department of Prints, this exhibition celebrates two transformational figures: William Ivins, the inaugural curator of the department, and his great protégé, A. Hyatt Mayor. As social historians and amateur print specialists, the two transformed how Americans understand and collect prints. Their scholarship and numerous exhibitions also galvanized print scholarship in the 20th century. On view are works by Andrea Mantegna, Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Jacques Callot, Francisco de Goya, James McNeill Whistler, Mary Cassatt, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, as well as works by lesser-known artists. Wordplay: Matthias Buchinger’s Inventive Drawings from the Collection of Ricky Jay Although he was born without hands or feet, Matthias Buchinger became a celebrated draftsman, calligrapher, magician, and musician in the 18th century. He performed for German emperors, and in England and Ireland entertained the king and was a frequent guest at noble houses. On view are approximately 20 drawings from the collection of Ricky Jay, the celebrated illusionist, actor, and author. Design for Eternity: Architectural Models from the Ancient Americas This exhibition, featuring small-scale sculptures in stone, ceramic, wood, and metal, created by artists from the ancient Americas to be placed in tombs of important individuals, is the first of its kind in the United States. It provides new insights into ancient American architectural design while shedding light on the role of models in mediating relationships between the living, the dead, and the divine. #DesignforEternity Made possible by Jill and Alan Rappaport in honor of Joanne Pearson. Fashion and Virtue: Textile Patterns and the Print Revolution, 1520–1620 Six Milanese engravings of interlaced roundels after Leonardo da Vinci, and later copied by Albrecht Dürer, sparked the serial production and international exchange of prints and books with ideas for ornament and decoration. Shortly after, a new book genre dedicated to textile patterns emerged. Demand for these models was at an unparalleled high, as textile decoration had become an important means of self-expression across all levels of society. This exhibition highlights the Met’s extensive holdings of Renaissance textile pattern books, on view with related prints, drawings, textiles, costumes, and paintings. #FashionandVirtue Made possible by the Placido Arango Fund and the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.

Celebrating the Arts of Japan: The Mary Griggs Burke Collection Over five decades, Mary Griggs Burke (1916–2012), a New York–based collector of Asian art, built one of the finest and most comprehensive private collections of Japanese art outside Japan. In March of this year, the Mary and Jackson Burke Foundation presented to the Met over 300 masterworks, of which over half—including outstanding examples of painting, calligraphy, sculpture, ceramics, and lacquerware—are on view in this tribute exhibition, part of a yearlong celebration marking the hundredth anniversary of the Department of Asian Art. #ArtsofJapan #AsianArt100 Made possible by the Mary Griggs Burke Fund, Gift of the Mary Livingston Griggs and Mary Griggs Burke Foundation, 2015.

Masterpieces of Chinese Painting from the Metropolitan Collection Over the past 40 years, the Met’s collection of Chinese painting and calligraphy has grown to be one of the greatest in the world, and this exhibition highlights the gems of the collection. Masterpieces date from the Tang dynasty (608–917) to the Qing (1644–1911), and the collection encompasses the vast historical sweep of the brush arts of China, from meticulous court painting to fiercely brushed dragons to lyrical paintings by scholars. Heber R. Bishop’s collection of carved jades was formed in the last quarter of the 19th century and bequeathed to the Met in 1902. Consisting of over one thousand pieces—primarily Chinese jades of the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as jades from Mughal India—it was the first major collection of its kind in the country. The World in Play: Luxury Cards, 1430–1540 Only three decks of European handpainted playing cards are known to have survived from the late Middle Ages. Featured here are all three decks including The Cloisters Playing Cards—the only complete set of these luxury cards— together with a selection of cards from the earliest hand-painted woodblock deck as well as the finest deck from the early 16th century. Fifteenth-century German engraved cards and contemporary north Italian tarot cards complete the display. The figures and scenes depicted on these cards reflect changing worldviews during a period of tumultuous social, economic, and religious change. #MetLuxuryCards

Artistic Furniture of the Gilded Age The most sumptuous moment in America’s Gilded Age is revealed through the work of some of its most noted design firms in this three-part exhibition. The centerpiece is the opulent Worsham-Rockefeller Dressing Room from a house commissioned by tastemaker Arabella Worsham (later Huntington). A complete work of art, it is a rare surviving commission by the cabinetmaker and interior decorator George A. Schastey (1839–1894), the subject of the exhibition’s second part. An adjoining gallery displays works by Schastey’s best-known competitor, Herter Brothers, that were created for the William H.
