EXPERIENCE THE 2018 – 19 SEASON Welcome to the Metropolitan Opera’s new season—featuring four compelling new productions and the return of Wagner’s epic Ring cycle, plus 18 remarkable revivals of classic repertory and rare gems. The season opens on September 24, 2018, with a visionary new staging of Saint-Saëns’s Samson et Dalila from Tony Award–winning director Darko Tresnjak, with Elīna Garanča and Roberto Alagna in the title roles. Nico Muhly’s new opera Marnie, based on the same novel that inspired the Hitchcock film, has its U.S. premiere in October. And on New Year’s Eve, the great Anna Netrebko stars in the title role of Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur. In exciting news, Yannick Nézet-Séguin will conduct his first performances as the Met’s new Music Director when he leads the new production of Verdi’s La Traviata, with soprano Diana Damrau as Violetta. It’s one of three productions this dynamic young maestro will conduct, including Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande and Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites. We hope you will join us for the 2018 – 19 season and invite you to explore all our offerings in this brochure.

SPOTLIGHT

When CHRISTINE GOERKE sang the Dyer’s Wife in Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten at the Met in 2013, she announced her arrival as the world’s next great dramatic soprano. General Manager Peter Gelb took notice and immediately cast her as Brünnhilde in the 2019 revival of Wagner’s Ring cycle. After her “overwhelming performance” (New York Times) in Elektra in 2018, Goerke is perfectly positioned to take on Wagner’s iconic warrior maiden at the Met. “Doing these roles is a joy, but there’s a lot of pressure,” she says. “I mean, the Ring cycle at the Metropolitan Opera … It’s one of those things—be careful what you wish for because you just might get it.” For more on the Ring, turn to page 37.

MAN OF THE HOUSE The biggest take-away from the Met’s announcement of the 2018 – 19 lineup was the news that Yannick Nézet-Seguin would take on the position of Music Director at the start of the season—two years earlier than originally planned. In his first season as the Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer Music Director, Nézet-Séguin will be on the podium for a new production of Verdi’s La Traviata and revivals of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande and Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites (in addition to participating in various talks and events). “The Metropolitan Opera is the greatest opera company in the world,” Nézet-Séguin says. “I’m honored to become its next Music Director.” 4

CHEMISTRY LESSON Elīna Garanča and Roberto Alagna open the 2018–19 season in the title roles of Saint-Saëns’s Samson et Dalila. It’s sure to be a lovefest.

EG I am very excited to work with Roberto again, because we’ve done so many performances of different operas together. He’s one of the partners that I can fully rely on. He’s a very generous and very honest performer. Very often with him, you actually forget that you are performing— what happens on stage becomes like real life.

RA With Elīna, we have this feeling together, we are very close when we are onstage together, we understand each other very well. Samson is a real exchange between the two characters. You must be like one person, like a husband and wife— to have a real communion. And I think with Elīna, we have that.

For more on Samson et Dalila, turn to page 8.

COMPOSER NICO MUHLY ON MARNIE

“Marnie is an adaptation of the Winston Graham novel, which Hitchcock also adapted into his amazing film. The basic outline of the story is there’s a woman who has a pattern, and her pattern is that she gets a job in a firm or company of some sort, gets the code for the safe, steals the money and runs, and changes her identity—rinse and repeat. Eventually she gets caught by one of the bosses, and instead of turning her into the police, he convinces her to marry him. So she enters into this state of sexual servitude and confusion. It’s kind of the perfect subject for an opera because it addresses all of the things about disguise, about theatricality, about lying, about deceit— which I think is at the heart of most operas.” For more on Marnie, turn to page 10. 5

THE TWO FACES OF ANNA In the 2018–19 season, the great Anna Netrebko will show off her remarkable theatrical range when she stars in the title roles of two equally virtuosic but very different operas: Verdi’s Aida and Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur. Here’s how the diva’s Met engagements stack up. AIDA The Character

Proud Ethiopian princess enslaved by the ancient Egyptians

Real-life 18th-century actress known as much for passionate affairs as passionate performances

Love Interest

Radamès, an Egyptian warrior torn between his loyalty to his king and his love for Aida

Maurizio, whom Adriana believes to be a lowly soldier but is actually the Count of Saxony

Rival

Amneris, the Egyptian princess who has designs on Radamès for herself despite his indifference

The Princess de Bouillon, married to the prince and determined to reignite the affair she once had with Maurizio

Big Aria

6

ADRIANA LECOUVREUR

“O patria mia,” in which Aida pledges her devotion to her homeland above all else

“Io son l’umile ancella,” in which Adriana pledges her devotion to her art above all else

Sensational Demise

Buried alive with her lover in an underground vault in the Temple of Vulcan

Dies in Maurizio’s arms after kissing a bouquet of poisoned violets

Legendary Met Forebears

Zinka Milanov, Birgit Nilsson, Leontyne Price, Martina Arroyo

Renata Tebaldi, Montserrat Caballé, Renata Scotto, Mirella Freni

Surprising Fact

Despite the “Egyptomania” that gripped Europe in the 19th century after Napoleon’s visits there, Verdi himself was not a fan of Egyptian culture. It’s ironic, then, that his opera, which had its world premiere in Cairo, would go on to become one of the most notable artistic tributes to the ancient civilization.

Legend has it that a jealous Parisian rival-in-love bribed audience members to heckle the real Adrienne during a performance of Racine’s Phèdre. In response, the actress spewed her frenzied character’s lines directly at the woman, who was forced to run out of the theater amid jeers and boos.

SAMSON ET DALILA When mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča and tenor Roberto Alagna joined forces for a new production of Carmen at the Met, the results were electrifying. Now this star duo reunites for another sensual French opera when they open the season in the title roles of Saint-Saëns’s biblical epic Samson et Dalila. MARNIE Composer Nico Muhly unveils his second new opera for the Met with this gripping reimagining of Winston Graham’s novel, set in the 1950s, about a beautiful, mysterious young woman who assumes multiple identities. Director Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening, the Met’s Rigoletto) has devised a fast-moving, cinematic world for this exhilarating story of denial and deceit, which also inspired a film by Alfred Hitchcock. Mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard sings the enigmatic Marnie, and baritone Christopher Maltman is the man who pursues her—with disastrous results.
