president’s letter
I am looking outside my office window and I can finally see most of my front lawn. The snow is finally giving up and the forecast looks better and better for spring to finally show up. I am looking forward to when the only white things falling from the sky are golf balls and not snowflakes. Sitting down and preparing to write this opening note has let me focus on how many incredible things are happening in the Met Section. The PGA Junior League is growing incredibly and the feedback has been unbelievably positive. We are hoping to have almost 80 teams registered in 2015, up from the original 3 teams just two years ago. Another thriving winter education series was conducted, with an average attendance of 50 professionals. Our Spring and Fall Educational Forums will feature several of the most prominent names in golf instruction today, including Chuck Cook, Sasho Mackenzie and Cameron McCormick. PGA Hope is a new program providing golf instruction to our nation’s veterans which enhances their mental, social, physical and emotional well being. One site will be put into action this year with hopefully many more to follow. The PGA and LPGA are joining forces with the brand new KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Westchester Country Club this June. Our Section will be working to promote the event and, more importantly, focusing on raising awareness and programming for women’s golf. The Metropolitan PGA Junior Golf program is as strong as ever and will be receiving a formal name change to the Metropolitan PGA Junior Golf Foundation. I encourage every Met Section member to embrace one or several of these incredible programs. The education events not only empower you with knowledge, but allow you to socialize and connect with your fellow section members. The outreach programs can and will positively affect the growth of our game and allow you to make a positive impact in your own community. Promote your participation and involvement to your employers and demonstrate to them that you are making every effort to stay relevant in this quickly changing and competitive profession. Our office staff is growing as we have added a new Communications Manager and a 6 month intern. We are also excited to be unveiling a completely new website and digital membership directory this spring. We have reorganized positions in the office and we congratulate Dan Frankel moving up to Junior Golf Director and Dan Kiley to Assistant Tournament Director. Kelli Clayton will now focus her energy solely as Operations Director and deserves a huge thank you for an amazing 15 years as Junior Golf Director. The PGA has gone through some major changes in the last few months and I am sure there will be much more change in the future nationally and locally. I am truly fortunate to be surrounded by an incredible group of Officers, Board Members and Nominating Committee who are all dedicated to making sure The Metropolitan PGA is prepared for this change and will continue to lead us in the right direction. Each and every one of you make this the best section in the country, let’s all strive to make 2015 an incredible year for golf! Heath Wassem, PGA Metropolitan PGA President 5

the Year Ahead In 1916, a group of golf professionals gathered at The Martinique Hotel in New York City and the PGA was formed. They brought together a common bond of a love for playing, teaching and competing, a passion for the profession and a commitment to grow the game of golf. Employment has always been a priority and the Met PGA is as concerned about the well-being of their membership as ever, but they also understand the dynamics of serving the employer facilities to keep golf viable. As we approach that magical centennial milestone, not a lot has changed to the PGA’s original mission statement. Time, obviously, has not stood still. Those original founders could never have envisioned 300 yard plus drives, greens rolling at 13 or 14, concerns about the grooves on a wedge or the size of a driver head or how a putter was to be held. Winged Foot and Bethpage were yet to be conceived and the number of PGA Professionals nationwide was less than what the Association boasts today in just our Section alone. The game has grown in leaps and bounds but the sport is still wrapped in the elements that have always made it special. It is the game of a lifetime, relishing the importance of integrity and playing by the Rules, and a a game that can be enjoyed by all. PGA Professionals, who at one time were experts in club-making and golf course design, are now more often attuned to club-fitting and the use of technology to try and best the wonderful designs of yesteryear and today. What does 2015 hold in store for the Met PGA and for golf as we move toward our Centennial Celebration? Playing and teaching are still at the forefront. Renowned instructor Chuck Cook (currently mentoring students Keegan Bradley, Jason Dufner and Luke Donald among others) will be joined at the Spring Forum by Sasho MacKenzie, a noted professor of human kinetics who has worked with a number of top golf instructors. Cameron McCormack, Jordan Spieth’s coach. will headline the Fall Forum. Competition in the year ahead will include some very special venues with a Tillinghast treasure, Fenway Golf Club, hosting the Section Championship and Bethpage Black returning again for the State Open. Other Championship sites on the docket include Huntington and Apawamis for the Match Play Championships, North Shore for the Head Pro, Bethpage Red for the Assistants Championship and Metropolis as the Senior Championship host. The Treiber, of course, returns to Wheatley Hills and The Bridge and Gardiner’s Bay once again host the Team Championship. A history of great champions illuminates the legacy of these title chases. What makes them extra special are the sponsors who remain steadfastly loyal to the game of golf and the Metropolitan PGA. Lincoln still drives the Section Championship, Women’s Met Open and Pro-Ams while MasterCard is a priceless partner in sponsoring the match play championships as well as Junior Golf and First Tee initiatives. Lenox Advisors brings an incredible invitation list to participate in the Lenox Advisors NY State Open Pro-Am and manages the $100,000.00 plus purse for the tournament proper. Mohegan Sun, National Car Rental and Empire City Casino add fun to the Pro-Am offerings while OMEGA and the Treiber Group help reward our Players of the Year at the season-ending Treiber Memorial. The golf industry also jumps on board and supports almost every other event on the agenda. When you talk about sponsorships, however, Ernst & Young is truly unique and special. For nearly 20 years, Ernst & Young has blanketed our Junior Golf initiatives and helped the program grow to an incredible schedule of almost 120 Junior Tour events Ernst & Young’s incredible support is seen in a community oriented, educational and reward program for the 1300 plus kids that join the Met PGA Junior Golf Association, the foundation that has become synonymous with Met area junior golf. Add to the Junior Golf Association the associated youth programs (Drive, Chip & Putt, PGA Junior League and the Player Development programs at area hockey and baseball games plus our Play Golf America and PGA Reach initiatives that will support the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship), and there is no doubt 2015 will be another incredibly busy but rewarding year for golf and the Met PGA. Education The Met PGA has developed a winning formula when it comes to education. In the spring and in the fall, top instructors and featured presenters help kick-off and close the golf season. The reformatted Winter Educational Series offers a wide range of topics, speakers and venues for those professionals stuck in the north during the off-season. A dash of summer programs, geared mainly for the assistants, completes the year-round experience that supports the constant need to refresh one’s knowledge and skill set to serve his or her golf constituency. In 2014, the keynote speaker at the packed Spring Forum was former Met PGA Professional and the 2001 PGA Teacher of the Year Craig Shankland. Shankland had toiled at both Middle Bay and Fairview before launching an incredibly successful teaching career that now includes seasonal stops at the LPGA home in Daytona and out in Colorado during the summer. An incredible communicator, Shankland is as energetic now as when he served as Section President in the mid-70’s. The Forum also included noted author Mark Broadie (“Every Shot Counts”) with his own head professional and 2013 Met PGA Teacher of the Year, Mike Diffley, and a segment hosted by Michael Breed, the 2012 PGA Teacher of the Year, sharing his insight on putting. Adding to the star-studded cast was the inclusion of the Met PGA Hall of Fame induction for Shankland, 1994 PGA Teacher of the Year Jim McLean and four-time PGA Club Pro Player of the Year Bruce Zabriski. In the fall, Randy Smith, pride of Royal Oaks CC and the 2002 PGA Teacher of the Year, shared his 40 years of experience as an instructor at the club level and with some of the greatest players on the Tour including Justin Leonard, Gary Woodland, Harrison Frazer, Colt Knost, Ryan Palmer and Martin Flores among an impressive student list. While the spring and fall are bookends, the rest of the schedule provides an incredible wealth and variety of topics on the shelf of knowledge. Programs involving health and wellness, marketing, social media, gadgets and technology, junior program development, analyzing launch monitor data, interview techniques, product knowledge, Aimpoint Putting instruction, financial planning and the annual Met PGA/MGA Rules of Golf seminar provided more than 50 hours of education to a very willing and participatory audience of PGA Professionals.

Fresh Meadow Country Club jumped out to a fast start in 2014 as head professional Matt Dobyns steered all three teammates to the top of the leaderboard. Matt and Keith Dicciani combined to shoot an 8 under par 63 to earn the top spot at the TaylorMade/adidas Long Island Pro Assistant’s Championship at Southward Ho Country Club. TaylorMade representative Brian Overbeck was on hand to congratulate the duo.
Similar to the happenings on Long Island, Sunningdale Country Club head professional Christopher Toulson led all three of his teams to the top of the leaderboard. His partnership with Mark Ledom resulted in an 8 under par 62 and the top spot on the podium at the TaylorMade/adidas Westchester Pro Assistant’s Championship at Brynwood Golf & Country Club.
Winged Foot’s Grant Sturgeon waded through an impressive list of Met PGA playing legends to capture his first Met Section trophy at the MasterCard Westchester PGA Championship hosted by Mount Kisco Country Club. Unknown to everyone at the time, Grant’s 2&1 victory over Christopher Toulson foreshadowed a historic year for the former Louisville Cardinal. Matt Dobyns, Fresh Meadow Country Club, put on quite the display at the POLO Golf Head Professional Championship. Matt posted nine birdies and only one bogey over 36 holes in cold, blistery conditions to earn a seven shot victory.
Met PGA Magazine 2014 Year in Review
A winter of strong play saw Huntington Country Club’s Tim Puetz qualify for and play in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open, his first appearance at golf’s highest level. His strong winter play carried over into the MasterCard Long Island PGA Championship at Muttontown Golf Club. Tim’s accurate driver and hot putter earned him a decisive 5&4 victory over defending champion and good friend Nick Beddow.
In his first full season on the senior circuit, Metropolis Country Club head professional Craig Thomas wasted no time finding the winner’s circle. Craig defeated Deepdale’s Darrell Kestner 2&1 to win the MasterCard Senior Match Play Championship at Willow Ridge Country Club. Host professional John Reeves was on hand to present Craig with the trophy.
The POLO Golf Senior Head Professional Championship turned out to be a bit closer. Siwanoy’s Grant Turner birdied the final hole to force a playoff with Greens at Half Hollow’s Shawn Baker. Grant eclipsed Shawn in that playoff to earn the victory. POLO Golf representatives Michael Shutte and Kate Bauer presented Grant with the winner’s trophy.

A steady and consistent Jessica Carafiello, Innis Arden Golf Club, erased a five shot deficit in the final round to capture the Lincoln Women’s Metropolitan Open at Waccabuc Country Club.
The Metropolitan Professional Championship debuted a new, three round format in 2014. That change just offered Ben Polland, Deepdale Golf Club, eighteen more holes to increase his birdie total. On the strength of sixteen tournament birdies, Ben earned his first Metropolitan PGA victory and a coveted spot in the 2015 Professional National Championship. Titleist representatives Brendan Dlouhy, Bill Kent, Paul Deedy and Jay Hill presented Ben with the winner’s plaque and check.
Host professional Ashley Gersten used her course knowledge to capture the Women’s Stroke Play Championship by four shots at Woodway Country Club.
If the New York State Open at Bethpage Black taught us one thing it is that the talent pipeline in the Metropolitan area will not run dry anytime soon. Knollwood Country Club’s Michael Miller, son of club head pro Bob Miller, used his prodigious length off the tee to help kick-start his final round with a 5 under par 31 on the front nine. Michael finished the tournament 8 under par to earn the victory. Dylan Newman, Bonnie Briar Country Club, earned low amateur honors on the back of an impressive final round 66.
Red numbers were popping up all across the leaderboard at the National Car Rental Met PGA Assistant Championship. The championship was decided in a thrilling four man playoff between Anthony Aruta, Staten Island Practice Center, Kevin Loftus, Pine Hollow, Paul Selvaggio, Wykagyl, and Grant Sturgeon, Winged Foot. Grant Sturgeon continued his sensational yearlong play with a victory on the second playoff hole.
Renowned for his work at Bethpage Black, superintendent Craig Currier may have outdone himself at Glen Oaks Club. A 27 hole layout bearing an eery resemblance to Augusta National, Glen Oaks provided a magnificent challenge for those professionals competing in the Lincoln Metropolitan PGA Championship. The challenging course seemed to get the better of the field all week until Anthony Casalino, Innis Arden Golf Club, walked to the 4th tee in his final round. Casalino had started the round six back. After a bogey on two and a par on three, he found himself seven back. Over the next fifteen holes, Casalino posted seven birdies, five pars, two bogeys and an eagle to fire an unbelievable 6 under par 66 and capture the Joseph J. Lannan Trophy in comeback fashion.

The hometown duo, Allison Agogila and Jason Lyons, captured the Long Island Pro Lady Championship at Rockville Links with an impressive 3 under par 69.
Silver Spring’s David Jones departed the Metropolitan PGA in winning style. He and Silver Spring member Lynda Foster shot an even par 71 to hold off the field and win the Westchester Pro Lady Championship at Patterson Club.
A bevy of supporters surrounding the 18th green at Wheatley Hills Golf Club roared in amazement as Mark Brown’s 40 foot putt found the bottom of the cup to clinch the Treiber Memorial. Peter and Scott Treiber were on hand to present the Tam O’Shanter head professional with his trophy as well as congratulate Craig Thomas on his Senior Treiber Memorial victory.
Pinehurst Resort played a bit tougher for the Metropolitan PGA teams than it did for Martin Kaymer, but a worthy champion was crowned again. Ryan Kalista led his Tamarack Country Club teammates Howard Golden, Rick Rakow and Doug Sweetbaum to victory at the annual Travel Pro Am.

2014 Year In Review Like a Tale of Two Cities, the weather in 2014 provided the best of times and the worst of times. What began as a wet and dreary spring that seemed to impact rounds and enjoyment throughout the Section turned for the better by the end of May. From that point on, almost every event and most weekends were perfect temperatures with plenty of sunshine. It was late October before we had to reschedule a tournament round, a rarity indeed! Aside from near-perfect weather and playing conditions (something we have come to expect from the outstanding area golf course superintendents) there were also some memorable performances. Grant Sturgeon made his presence felt in only his 2nd year in the Section as the Louisville native won the MasterCard Westchester PGA at Mount Kisco CC, the Met Open and both the National Car Rental Met PGA Assistants Championship at Bethpage Red and the National Championship in Florida enroute to the coveted OMEGA Met PGA Player of the Year title. Among the senior constituents, Craig Thomas had as equally an impressive and dominant year with wins at the Met PGA Senior Championship at Pine Hollow, the MasterCard Senior Match Play at Willow Ridge and the Senior Treiber Memorial at Wheatley Hills in addition to finishing as the low club professional at the PGA Senior Professional Championship. Sturgeon and Thomas were joined on trips to the winner’s circle by Tim Puetz of Huntington CC (MasterCard LIPGA), Fresh Meadow’s Matt Dobyns (POLO Golf Met PGA Head Pro Championship), Ben Polland of Deepdale (Met PGA Professional Championship), Innis Arden’s Anthony Casalino (Lincoln PGA Championship), Mark Brown of Tam O’Shanter (Treiber Memorial),Grant Turner of Siwanoy (Senior POLO Golf Met PGA Head Pro Championship) and Jessica Carafiello of Innis Arden (Lincoln Women’s Met Open Championship). Winners, however, are measured in deeds as well as by scores and the 2014 year saw some champions of the less fortunate and the future. Ray Ford and Rolling Hills broke all records for Patriot Golf fund-raising here in the Met Section with over $125,000.00 raised through their Folds of Honor Pro-Am. That mark helped lift the Met PGA to another $400,000.00 plus tally for total funds raised for the children of those who have sacrificed so much for the sake of our freedom. The Met PGA’s other charity of choice is, of course, junior golf. It is the lifeblood of the game and perhaps the one area that stagnancy and a changing culture has not yet left its mark. The fact that over 1300 kids participate in a schedule of events that lasts about 60 days and includes over 115 events demonstrates the game’s healthy underpinning. Several years ago, then-Section President Rick Meskell ushered the challenge for the Met PGA to raise $100,000.00 a year to promote Junior Golf. Thanks in large part to the efforts of Garden City Golf Club and their membership and professional staff that raised over $20,000.00 to lead all contributors in 2014, that target was again attained. The Met PGA continues to make a significant annual contribution to First Tee, not only with dollars but also as one of the key partners in leading the chapter in their delivery of golf and life skills programming. The Met PGA’s commitment to the future of the game, the incredible growth of PGA Junior League here in the Met Section has been inspiring and awesome. The thirty-three club increase in participation between 2013 and 2014 delivers a clear message of commitment from those PGA professionals who believe in the value of creating a less competitive but team-oriented introduction to golf. Identifying jerseys have replaced the logo hats of the tour players and Section leaders believe that it may be possible to field as many as 70 teams in the coming year. Player Development has become more than just a brand for the Met PGA. It is a marching order and it occurs in places such as Citi Field, Nassau Coliseum, Eisenhower Park and Patriot Hills. It may start with the youngest competitors trying to qualify for the amazing Drive, Chip & Putt Championship at sites like Harbor Links, Sunken Meadow, Bethpage, Eisenhower Park, Knollwood, Apawamis and Stanwich to the excitement for 13-15 year old champions Jennifer Rosenberg and Matt Camel who qualified from our region to compete this April at Augusta. As Bubba Watson and other tour stars watched last year’s inaugural competition, it was fascinating to think that it might not be the last time to see some of these local champions inside those hallowed grounds. 28 Met PGA Magazine 2014 Year in Review
2014 Year In Review And speaking of future stars, in many ways the future is now. This past year saw two of our graduates of the Met PGA Junior Tour, Kelly Shon and Nannette Hill, gain their LPGA Tour cards. How great would it be to see them playing alongside Jean Bartholomew or Liz Caron at this June’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Westchester Country Club. Meanwhile Cameron Wilson who was truly a prodigy when he first competed on the Met PGA Junior Tour as a 9-year old is now one step closer to his dream of a spot on the PGA Tour with a successful ascent to the Web.Com tour for 2015. We are equally as excited about the prospects of Cameron Young, a member of the 2014 PGA Junior Ryder Cup squad and son of Sleepy Hollow’s David Young. Watching him compete on the national and international stages now makes it difficult to think that it was just a few short years ago when he was gaining points on the Junior Tour. Cameron, Shon and Hill, along with Michael Miller, Mike Ballo Jr., David Pastore and Clancy Waugh are just a few of the Met PGA Junior Tour graduates with bright futures in the game. The year in the rear-view mirror was special on the airwaves also for a few of our professionals. Jeff Warne of The Bridge joined Jim McLean to host Golf School Live on SiriusXM Radio. Debbie Doniger of GlenArbor and Natalie Gulbis were the Golfing Girls on their monthly broadcast on SiriusXM. Michael Breed continues to entertain and educate on The Golf Fix while this fall, Brian Crowell of GlenArbor also accepted a hosting role on Golf Channel’s Lesson Tee Live weekly program. What a special treat for the more than 200 kids attending the Junior Awards ceremony to actually hear from Crowell, Doniger and Warne as part of the year-end Columbus Day celebration at Bethpage. Just a couple of weeks after that, some 200 PGA Professionals returned to Bethpage for the Fall Meeting, Forum and Awards program. Instead of the kids toting home the trophies and prizes it was the “best in class” of 2014 as the Met PGA’s special award recipients. Darrell Kestner, Jeff Warne, John Kennedy, Michael Shank, Nick Maselli, Max Galloway, Greg Bisconti, Chris Kenney and Darren Stanek were honored by their peers as teachers, educators, junior leaders, merchandisers, mentors and for player development. No matter how many times these awards are celebrated and how many different ways the recipients are recognized, the presentations are always motivating, emotional and uplifting. And just to add some spice to the personal achievements of our professionals, how cool was it to see Westchester Country Club name their beautiful, state of the art new facility – the John Kennedy Learning Center - a lifetime legacy for a man with a lifetime of dedicated achievements and service to others. It is impossible to acknowledge every club, every professional, every sponsor and every accomplishment without many, many omissions. How do you thank Augusta lookalike Glen Oaks for a Lincoln Met PGA Championship that will long be remembered for one of the greatest final round charges ever recorded. What more can you say about EY’s passion for kids and golf? Lincoln, Lenox Advisors, MasterCard, Mohegan Sun, Empire City Casino, National Car Rental, the PGA Tour, Anheuser Busch and Treiber Group promote more than business and tournament winners, they are brands for golf. We celebrated the best of our professionals at venues like CC of Fairfield, Meadow Brook, CC of Darien, Waccabuc, Southward Ho, Brynwood, Willow Ridge, Mount Kisco, Muttontown, Bethpage (Red and Black), Wheatley Hills, The Bridge and Gardiners Bay. And we enjoy the opportunity for professionals and amateurs to compete side by side throughout the year including at Pinehurst after this year’s Open Championships for the Met PGA’s closing Pro-Am event. . So we have much to be grateful for in 2014 but sadly also use this space to remember those who we lost. Tom Nieporte was a giant of a man, not so much in stature but in heart, in dignity and in professionalism. He will always be remembered as the last club professional to win a PGA Tour event but the truth is that to those he served, he was a champion of a person. So too was Harbor Links’ Guna Kunjan, taken too early by the ravages of cancer. And few of our current members knew Mickey Homa, the former head professional at H. Smith Richardson, who like Nieporte, was a great player, filled with humility and also was a Met PGA Professional of the Year. Golf gives us so much in our everyday life and when we lose something or someone special, it is hard to put that loss into words. The Met PGA and the game of golf were far richer for having had the likes of Nieporte, Homa and Kunjan grace our game and our profession. We were blessed by their presence and now mourn their absence.

Assistant’s Special Awards Gil McNally Most Improved Award & Scoring Average Award A fine player for several years in the Metropolitan Section, Tim Puetz, Huntington Country Club, made the leap to an elite player in 2014. Tim’s tremendous improvement was evident before the Met Section tournament scheduled started. On March 1, 2014, Tim teed it up in a Monday qualifier for the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open. The field was dotted with PGA Tour veterans (Arjun Atwal, Jason Allred), amateur phenoms (Peter Williamson) and Met Section colleagues (Danny Balin, Nick Beddow). Staring down the more accomplished field, Tim qualified for the Puerto Rico Open that day spearheading a season to remember. During the winter, Tim focused on his driving, putting and wedge play as the three key areas of his game that needed improvement. He believed he would contend at every event if those three areas remained consistently strong. He was not wrong. In eight Assistants Tour events, Tim finished in the top 6 six times, capping off his season with a win at the Assistants Tour Championship at Old Oaks Country Club. Tim’s impressive play resulted in a 70.56 scoring average and an improvement in his scoring average with relation to par by 4.55 strokes. Those marks earned the Huntington Country Club assistant professional the Scoring Average Award and the Gil McNally Most Improved Player award. In addition to his exploits on the Assistants Tour, Tim earned his first Met Section major championship in May at the Long Island PGA Championship hosted by Muttontown Golf Club. He later added a third place finish at the Long Island Open, a second place finish at the Met Open Championship, an eleventh place finish at the Lincoln Met PGA Championship and a sixth place finish at the Treiber Memorial Tournament of Champions.
TaylorMade adidas Assistant Professional of the Year Award Dennis Dungee of Mount Kisco Country Club has been selected as the 2014 TaylorMade Assistant of the Year. Dennis served as Vice-President of the Assistants Association in 2014 and recently became President with Andrew Bostrom’s move to the head professional position at Green Brook in the New Jersey Section. Dennis has been active for the last three years serving as Secretary in 2013 and 1st Vice President in 2014. A well rounded professional, Dennis focuses an enormous amount of his efforts on junior golf and charitable fundraising. In addition to volunteering with The First Tee and building a Met PGA Junior League Golf team, Dennis has conducted junior golf fundraisers during each of the past four seasons. His devotion to player development within the Section and at Mount Kisco Country Club has earned him a US Kids Top 50 Honorable Mention award. Dennis’s efforts continue beyond the boundaries of his Section and club. He is an active, annual participant in annual Patriot Golf events, runs successful campaigns for Arnie’s Army for Fight Against Prostate Cancer and commits yearly to Play for P.I.N.K. outings. A section leader, a committed junior golf advocate and a devoted philanthropist, Dennis Dungee has rightly earned this outstanding award. Congratulations, Dennis!

As a professional athlete, travel is a huge part of my life. With tournaments, sponsor obligations, and training, I spend up to forty weeks a year on the road. Over the course of my golf career, that can add up significantly. The Cessna Citation Excel/ XLS is spacious enough to bring friends along for the ride, and the King Air 350i can access shorter runways, bringing me closer to more remote tournaments. I train hard to be the best professional golfer, and Wheels Up is the most efficient way to stick to my schedule and advance my career. Nine Core Values The First Tee has established Nine Core Values that represent some of the many inherently positive values connected with the game of golf. These Nine Core Values have been incorporated into The First Tee Experience and have been used to name golf holes at several of The First Tee facilities. Honesty — the quality or state of being truthful; not deceptive. Integrity — strict adherence to a standard of value or conduct. Personal honesty and independence.
Confidence — reliance or trust. A feeling of selfassurance Responsibility — accounting for one’s actions; dependable. Perseverance — to persist in an idea, purpose or task despite obstacles. Courtesy — considerate behavior toward others. A polite remark or gesture. Judgment — the ability Garamond to make a Berthold decision or form an opinion.
Sportsmanship — observing the rules of play and winning or losing with grace. Respect — to feel or show deferential regard for; esteem.

First Tee
Junior Golf Association
Now that The First Tee has become well known nationally thanks to the promotion of the Masters and PGA Tour, it is still interesting that many golf aficionados in our own area are not tuned in to the history of the local chapter and the amazing reach that has been achieved since its inception in 2001. The First Tee of Metropolitan New York was part of a vision that Lew Rudin, a pioneer and a philanthropist had for kids and golf. The original announcement of The First Tee came in 1997 in Central Park when leaders of Augusta National, the PGA, USGA, LPGA and PGA Tour along with corporate supporters like Lew Rudin laid out a dream to make golf more affordable and accessible. Four years later the facility at Mosholu was opened to the Metropolitan Chapter, tragically less than 2 weeks after Mr. Rudin’s passing. The guidance of the chapter though was under capable eyes with the MGA and Met PGA playing significant roles along with a number of community and golf-minded leaders of the local business world. The Rudin family inaugurated the Lew Rudin Learning Center at Mosholu and the Board was presided over by Howard Druckman, a friend of the Rudins and Tim Finchem, the chief architect of the national program. Fast forward now and the scope of The First Tee of Metropolitan New York has evolved and continues to grow. New founding members have emerged along with a group called The Young Benefactors, bringing youth and philanthropy closer together. Education and life-skills, supported by the nine core values, are more important than ever. Facilities throughout the five boroughs, New Jersey, Long Island and Southern CT deliver programs and benefits to thousands of youngsters. From participants in Scholars Programs and Leadership Academies to qualifiers for the Nature Valley Champions Tour First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, the merger of golf and life skills has been a home run of achievements. The Chapter is now moving into a new era as Philip Laskawy, president for the last six years, has turned the gavel over to Ken Whitney. The new leader will certainly try to keep the momentum churning while continuing to explore ways to strengthen and expand the success of golf’s most diverse and unique youth offering.

In order to qualify for the benefits offered by HBM2 in its Program you must be continuously enrolled in the Program and you must close your real estate transaction with a real estate agent directly affiliated with the Program. If a rebate is offered via the Program, that rebate amount will be based on the actual, final sales price of the subject property, with a minimum final sales price of $75,000 to qualify. Player Development What is the formula for successful Player Development programs? It may sound trite but it seems that if we want to find new golfers, there is one simple way to make it happen. Make the experience “fun.” All too often it seems as though we may have lost our way, promoting the competitive ideals and over-celebrating the victors. It is great that we all aspire to win at whatever level we aspire to, but in fact the game of golf is one of the healthiest, most social, most challenging sports that any man, woman or child can play. Whether you are learning at the age of 5 or still playing into your 90’s, it is really all about making it fun. Tee it Forward was a great start and now that impetus is spilling over into many other forums and ideas to promote the game at many, many levels of play. With that as a backdrop, 2014 included a number of special activities authored by the Met PGA under the Player Development umbrella. Thanks to our Regional Consultant, Jonathan Gold, a Met PGA staff that believes with passion in promoting the game and a large cadre of volunteer PGA professionals who give of their time and expertise there was no shortage of smiling faces that attended and maybe even learned a little about golf from Citi Field to Nassau Coliseum to Augusta National. After several successful events in conjunction with the New York Mets, the Met PGA took their travelling golf show on the road to the Nassau Coliseum twice in 2014. The first stop was in March as the golf season was getting ready to pop and the hockey season was near the finish line. Then we returned in September with more instruction, a chuck-a-puck golf theme and the chance for several junior champions to get on the overhead video. Add to that four hours of instruction that even Sparky the Islanders Mascot enjoyed and it is easy to realize that golf can be marketed everywhere – even on ice. Add to that, our Play Golf America Day at Eisenhower Park that targeted Veterans; the Drive Chip and Putt Qualifyings that brought together nearly 1,000 competitors to try to win a coveted spot at Augusta and the relatively new but overwhelmingly successful PGA Junior League that went from 4 teams in 2013 to 37 in 2014 and may approach 80 by this spring. Initiatives like these make it clear that Player Development is a healthy cause with a wonderful upside for the Met PGA and golfers alike.
