PRESIDENT’S LETTER

2016 is upon us and the offseason has been an active one within the section!

SECTION OFFICERS Heath Wassem, President Brian Crowell, Secretary Stuart Waack, Treasurer Carl Alexander, First Vice President Michael Shank, Second Vice President BOARD OF DIRECTORS Dave Fusco Ben Hoffhine Chris Kenney Jamie Kilmer Adam McDaid Cory Muller Karl Obermeyer James Ondo Sean Quinlivan Steve Scott Brad Worthington, Honorary President EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Jeff Voorheis EDITORS Met PGA Staff DESIGN AND PRODUCTION PRINTCRAFT Mamaroneck, NY 914-698-3453 METROPOLITAN PGA 49 Knollwood Road, Suite 200 Elmsford, NY 10523 Phone: 914-347-2325 Fax: 914-347-2014 Junior Golf: 914-347-2416 Junior Fax: 914-347-1501 Email: met@pgahq.com www.met.pga.com

Congratulations to Charles Robson and his amazing 43 year tenure as our Executive Director. He has seen our section grow under his guidance from a 1 room office at Wykagyl with himself as the only employee to a fulltime staff of 20 plus in season. Initiatives such as the New York State Open, The Junior Tour, The Assistants Tour, The Squire Cup, First Tee of Metropolitan NY, Met HOPE are just a few of the programs developed under his guidance. I believe I am speaking for all of us as he has been an incredible mentor and friend to us all. I would like to wish him and his family nothing but the best in this new chapter of life. Thank you Charlie for everything you have done for all of us!! I would like to extend warm congratulations to Jeff Voorheis as he ascends to the Executive Director position from within our own staff. Jeff has chosen Dan Kiley to fill his role as Tournament Director, Kevin Rodine as Assistant Tournament Director, and Kaitlin Sabbagh as our new Player Development Manager. We have an incredible staff of dedicated golf administration professionals! They work tirelessly in season and bring a dedication to supporting the membership and growing the game of golf like no others. We are looking forward to a bright future in The Metropolitan Section with this new group. 2016 is a busy year for golf. The PGA and Section are celebrating our Centennial Anniversary on April 10th. The PGA was founded right here in Manhattan in 1916 with the final formation meeting being held at The Martinique Hotel in lower Manhattan. We then move on to the PGA at nearby Baltrusol, golf in the Olympics, Section Championship at the site of the first PGA Championship Siwanoy CC, to co-hosting the National PGA Annual meeting in Manhattan commemorating President Derek Sprague’s outgoing the first week of November. The Board has also committed to expanding our charitable efforts by changing the name of our fundraising efforts to The Metropolitan Section Foundation, which has several key spokes: Youth Golf, Military and Diversity. All three of which help us fulfill the goals and objectives of our section mission statement. Some of the programming supported via this foundation: First Tee, Junior Tour, Golf in Schools, PGA Hope, Patriot Golf Day and many more. Thank you to all the section members for your invaluable support in raising funds for these great causes! Our section continues to lead the nation and set an amazing example that the other sections look up to. I would like to thank my Officers and Board members for all their hard work during the offseason as well as during our busy season. This group is very diligent in trying to represent every member of the section and implement decisions that are well thought out for betterment of our section as a whole. Wishing everyone a successful 2016!!!

The Year Ahead 100 years and going strong! The architects of the PGA of America could not have imagined what the game of golf would look like in 2016, but they would surely be proud to have formed an association that would be 28,000 strong and have such an impact on so many lives. PGA Professionals are, of course, the keepers of the game of golf but they are much more than that. Metropolitan PGA members teach, coach, mentor, inspire and heal. Often unsung, they are selfless pillars of the facilities they manage and the communities they live in. Although the game has dramatically evolved over the last 100 years, the character and integrity of the PGA of America’s members hasn’t changed one bit. 2016 will be a yearlong Centennial celebration for the PGA of America and the Met Section. A few days after the Spring Meeting at Wykagyl, Butch Harmon will visit the Met Section at the annual Spring Educational Forum at Westchester Dinner Theatre. Along with Harmon, the day will feature 2015 Award Winners: Professional of the Year, Nelson Long, Player of the Year, Matt Dobyns and Sam Snead Award Winner, John Kennedy. The Centennial party will travel to Bronxville in September. Siwanoy Country Club will play host to the Lincoln Met PGA Championship, 100 years after hosting the inaugural PGA Championship. In between, other past PGA Championship venues like Eisenhower Park (formerly Salisbury), Inwood, Pelham, Fresh Meadow and Engineers have agreed to host events to help us keep the celebration going. Our relationships with many of our sponsors mirror the longevity of the association. Lincoln’s sponsorships of the Section Championship, Women’s Met Open and Pro-Ams have been mainstays. MasterCard is a priceless partner in sponsoring the Match Play Championships as well as player development initiatives. Lenox Advisors passion for golf shines brightly as they fill the field for the NY State Open Pro-Am and manage the $100,000.00 plus purse for the tournament proper. Mohegan Sun, National Car Rental and Empire City Casino add fun to the Pro-Am offerings while OMEGA and the Treiber Group help reward our Players of the Year at the season-ending stableford Treiber Memorial. Our golf industry partners also jump on board and support almost every other event on the agenda. Celebrating one hundred years in 2016 will also afford us a great opportunity to look to the future. Player Development is and will continue to be a daily charge for everyone associated with this great game. Our repositioned Met PGA Foundation will steam ahead based on its three pillars: Junior Golf, Military, and Diversity. The robust Met PGA Junior Golf Tour has been the cornerstone for years, most recently growing to 1,300 plus members and over 120 tournaments. The Met PGA’s commitment to the First Tee is well documented and we have a renewed vigor for identifying and bringing golf to those previously underserved in our communities. Finally, perhaps one of the most impactful programs we have ever administered, Met PGA HOPE allows us to physically connect with and thank members of our military through the game of golf. When you think about our centennial in a historical context, you can’t help but reflect on the common thread of freedom that we have enjoyed since day one. Met PGA HOPE truly allows us to celebrate the providers of our freedom, and during our hundredth year that might feel a little extra special. Saving the best for last, 2016 will afford us a number of opportunities to celebrate and thank Charlie Robson for his service to the Metropolitan PGA and its members. Charlie’s wisdom, guidance and perseverance are the cornerstone on which the association was built. Every member has been touched or helped directly or indirectly by his tireless efforts and many, many members have “Charlie stories” that they remember, cherish, and appreciate. There aren’t enough words to describe Charlie and what he means to the Met PGA, so we simply say “Thanks Charlie – you are the absolute best.”

Education The Met PGA professional’s ability to innovate doesn’t stop at their jobs. Over the last several years, the Education Committee has developed and refined the delivery of its programs to maximize efficiency and participation. Bookended by the “majors” (the spring and fall forums), the Winter Series seminars have opened unlimited opportunities for range of material, presenters and venues at a time of year conducive to grabbing the section members attention. In 2015 the Spring Forum offered Chuck Cook, teacher to Keegan Bradley, Jason Chuck Cook Dufner, Luke Donald and Joe Ogilvie. Cook was followed by Dr. Sasho MacKenzie. Dr. MacKenzie had put together a scientific study to demonstrate the corollary between the mental game and its connection to biomechanics. The Fall Forum was highly popular thanks to the appearance by Cameron McCormick. McCormick’s relationship and tutelage of Jordan Spieth was impressive and powerful.

While the spring and fall are headliners, the rest of the schedule provides incredible variety, relevant topics and unexpected treats. Programs involving health and wellness, marketing, social media, technology, junior golf development, product knowledge, Aimpoint Putting instruction, financial planning and the annual Met PGA/MGA Rules of Golf seminar help provided

a well-rounded offering, while appearances by Stan Utley with PING, Johnny Miller representing Zero Friction, and Callaway Golf’s Wedgeducation with Roger Cleveland added some extra pizazz. In all, more than 50 hours of education (mostly free) are offered to a captive audience of PGA Professionals.

Champions Spotlight The first win in Westchester belonged to Bobby Heins and Adam Larkin of Old Oaks. The duo shot a 6 under par 64 to win the TaylorMade Westchester Pro Assistant Championship at Leewood The season opening MasterCard Long Island PGA Championship lived up to its billing. Glen Oak’s Scott Ford and Huntington’s Matt Noel, the host assistant professional, engaged in a spirited back and forth final. It took 21 holes, but Scott’s experience and steady play earned him a well -deserved victory.

Garden City Golf Club came out firing in the TaylorMade Long Island Pro Assistant Championship at Brookville. Bob Rittberger and Jesse Fitzgerald combined to shoot a 9 under par 62 to secure the year’s first win. It had been eleven years since Rob Labritz’s first and only match play title. The wait ended this past year when the Glen Arbor head professional marched to victory at the MasterCard Westchester PGA Championship hosted by the Apawamis Club.

Metropolis Country Club head professional Craig Thomas defended his MasterCard Senior Match Play Championship title at Woodmere Club in impressive fashion. The two-time champion went no further than the 15th green in his last two matches. Met PGA Magazine 2015 Year in Review

The POLO Golf Senior Head Professional Championship is a two day event. Darrell Kestner did his best to win the tournament on day one. The Deepdale Director of Golf birdied his last four holes during the opening round to post a staggering 6 under par 65. A second round 70 solidified the 8 shot victory for the Met PGA legend.

On a tough second day at North Shore Country Club, Tam O’Shanter’s Mark Brown fired a 3-under par 68, one of only three red numbers on the day, to capture his first POLO Golf Head Professional Championship.

Champions Spotlight Fresh off a come from behind victory at the 2015 PGA Professional National Championship, Matt Dobyns wasted no time returning to the winner’s circle. The two-time National Champion posted three rounds under par at Fairview Country Club and the Golf Club of Purchase to capture his first Metropolitan Professional Championship.

Upper Montclair Country Club played very difficult on day one at the Lincoln Women’s Met Open Championship where no competitor broke par. Kelly Shon flipped that narrative early during the second day when she birdied four of her first seven holes. Consistent play followed the early fireworks and allowed Shon to secure a 3 shot victory.

Jessica Carafiello, Innis Arden, impressive driving and timely putting enabled her to capture the Women’s Stroke Play Championship by four shots at Metropolis Country Club. The annual visit to Bethpage Black for the New York State Open is always a highlight of the tournament season. The area’s best golfers challenge a renowned major championship venue. Jeb Buchanan was more than up for the challenge. The Londonville, New York native fired a very impressive 5 under par 66 in both rounds one and two to take a 5 shot lead into the final round. A few early bogeys opened the door for his nearest competitors and a miscue on the picturesque par 3 17th dropped him into a tie atop the leaderboard. Showing an incredible amount of poise, Jeb steadied himself and ultimately earned the victory on the first playoff hole. Pictured alongside Jeb is the low amateur, Cameron Young.

Bethpage Red is a familiar and comfortable track for Century assistant professional Frank Bensel. The three-time National Assistant Champion added a fourth Metropolitan Assistant Championship title to his trophy case on the back of a 3 under 67 final round to win by a stroke.

The 2015 Met PGA Championship will be one to remember. Standing on the 18th tee one back of National Champion Matt Dobyns, Saint Andrew’s assistant professional Tyler Jaramillo knew he needed birdie to force a playoff. After a perfect drive and optimal lay-up, Tyler chipped his third shot 12 feet below the hole. The surrounding crowd erupted when Tyler coolly rolled the tying putt to send the Section Championship to a sudden death playoff. An errant tee shot from Jaramillo on the first playoff hole opened the door for Dobyns. The Fresh Meadow head professional stepped right on through to par the first playoff hole and win his first Metropolitan PGA Championship. 13 13

Champions Spotlight Former PGA National Professional Championship winner Ron McDougal emerged from a tight pack to win the Met PGA Senior Championship at Metropolis Country Club.

Carl Alexander, Golf Club of Purchase, and Jack Druga, Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, shot 17 under par in 27 holes to win the Senior Junior Championship at Eisenhower Park Golf Course. Matt Dobyns and Michael Lamoretti, Fresh Meadow Country Club, defeated the field by 9 shots to win the Lincoln/Club Car Long Island Pro-President at Muttontown Golf Club in decisive fashion.

Dave Fusco and Scott Filor, Patriot Hills, shot 15 under par to win the Lincoln/Club Car Westchester Pro President at Century Country Club.

A few holes of free golf were needed to decide the Metropolitan PGA Senior Team Championship. After trading birdies on the first extra hole, Winged Foot’s Mike Gilmore and Pelham’s Mike Diffley chipped in for eagle on the par 5 second hole to defeat Jon Kudysch and Mike Caporale and earn the victory. This was Diffley’s second consecutive Senior Team Championship title.

There were plenty of birdies to go around at the Met PGA Team Championship. Scott Ford, Glen Oaks, and Brian Gaffney, Quaker Ridge, teamed to shoot 9 under par 61 at Gardiner’s Bay on day one and an 8 under par 64 at The Bridge on day two to secure the win.

Sunningdale’s Christopher Toulson and Michael Greene combined to shoot a scintillating 9 under par 62 to capture the National Car Rental Pro Am Championship on their home track. Met PGA Magazine 2015 Year in Review

Champions Spotlight

The National Car Rental Jack Mallon Pro Am at Rockaway Hunting Club featured an astounding four way tie atop the leaderboard. Matt Dobyns and Alan Finkelstein, Fresh Meadow, Matt Hurd and Daniel Gordon, North Hempstead, Jesse Fitzgerald and John Byrne, Garden City Golf Club and Mike Meehan and Shawn Rogul, Old Westbury, all shot 3 under par 70.

Piping Rock’s Sean Quinlivan and Mimi McAndrew captured the Long Island Pro Lady Championship at Old Westbury Golf & Country Club with a blistering 5 under par 67.

Mount Kisco’s Chris Case and Suzanne Sturz shared winning honors with Paramount’s Steve Scott and Renata Coyle at the Westcher Pro Lady Championship at Bedford Golf & Tennis Club

Charlie Bolling won his fourth Senior Treiber Memorial in the past seven years in incredible fashion. On a windy, difficult fall day, four players competed in the final round of the tournament. Three players failed to break 75. Charlie Bolling shot 8 under par 62. Congratulations, Charlie, on a round for the ages.

Met PGA Magazine 2015 Year in Review

Rob Labritz found himself in a familiar spot at the Treiber Memorial Tournament of Champions – the winner’s circle. Rob fended off a furious rally from Met PGA Player of the Year Matt Dobyns and the hard charging Scott Ford to capture his second Treiber trophy in three years.

Pouring rains did not deter Met Section teams from enjoying the glamor of Pinehurst Resort. James Lichtenberger led his Colonial Springs team (Alex Burbatsky, Bob Gibilterra and Tom Nissen) to victory at the annual Travel Pro Am. 17

2015 Year In Review Winter came in like a lamb, but went out like a lion. The snow and ice that didn’t come in November, December, and most of January decided to linger until early April. The freeze, thaw, and refreeze process that we experienced did widespread damage to playing surfaces and essentially eliminated spring golf. Fortunately, the weather would finally swing in our favor and offered one of the nicest summers imaginable. Once the area’s golf course superintendents could see the ground and the weather cooperated, top notch playing conditions yielded some fantastic golf action. Matt Dobyns coasted to both OMEGA Met PGA and National Player of the Year honors in impressive fashion. Dobyns won his second PGA Professional National Championship in June, and came home to win the Section Professional Championship at Fairview and GC of Purchase in August. He then capped the season by winning the Lincoln Met PGA Championship at Fenway in a playoff with Tyler Jaramillo of Saint Andrew’s GC. When he wasn’t winning, Dobyns was finishing 3rd in the POLO Golf Head Professional Championship, 2nd in the Long Island Open, 4th in the Lenox Advisors New York State Open and 2nd in the Treiber Memorial. Believe it or not, Dobyns did Matt Dobyns leave some room for a number of other notable performances. Rob Labritz claimed his second MasterCard Westchester PGA title to open the tournament season. Interestingly, his first was in 2003 at the same venue, The Apawamis Club. Glen Oaks’ Scott Ford outlasted Matt Noel in the 21st hole to win the MasterCard Long Island PGA Championship at Huntington CC. Mark Brown from Tam O’Shanter played two beautiful rounds at North Shore CC to win the Polo Golf Head Professional Championship. Century CC’s Frank Bensel won his fourth National Car Rental Assistant’s Championhip title at Bethpage Red. Rob Labritz made it bookends when he ended 2015 with a win at the Treiber Memorial Tournament of Champions at Wheatley Hills. On the Senior circuit, Deepdale’s Darrell Kestner built a Player of the Year resume with a win at the Polo Golf Senior Head Professional Championship, Rob Labritz 2nd at the Empire City Casino Met PGA Senior Championship, 2nd at the MGA Senior Open, and 4th at the Senior Treiber Memorial Tournament of Champions. Metropolis CC Head Professional Craig Thomas opened the season with a win at the MasterCard Senior Match Play at Woodmere. Ron McDougal won the Empire City Casino Met PGA Senior Championship on a newly renovated golf course at Metropolis CC. The Senior Treiber Memorial at Deepdale was the stage for one of the best rounds imaginable as Charlie Bolling’s shot 62 to match the course record on blustery late fall conditions The Metropolitan PGA professionals are champions beyond hoisting trophies after winning golf tournaments. The Met PGA’s Foundation continued much of the great work it has done over the years while always looking for new ways to serve those in need. Ray Ford again called Rolling Hills to action, leading the section to another astonishing total donation of $475,000 to The Folds of Honor’s Patriot Golf Day appeal. Rolling Hills alone contributed over $100,000 with others like Cherry Valley, Westchester CC, Tuxedo, and Saint Andrew’s all easily eclipsing the $20,000 mark. Committed to finding new ways to give back, the Met PGA identified another way to help military veterans in 2015. The Met PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) program used golf as a vehicle to recreation, camaraderie and fun for veterans who might not otherwise pick up a club. In what many said was among Grant Sturgeon the most impactful things they’d ever done, Met PGA professionals gave their time, expertise and friendship to great men and women who suffered physically or mentally following their service to our county. The cliché about getting more out than you put in couldn’t be more applicable in this case. The importance of the Met PGA’s long lasting charity, junior golf, might be at an all-time high. The fact that over 1300 kids participate in a schedule of events that lasts about 60 days and includes over 115 events demonstrates that the game has a healthy underpinning. Several years ago, then-Section President Rick Meskell ushered the challenge for the Met PGA to raise $100,000.00 a year to help promote Junior Golf. Thanks to the effort of a few clubs, including perennial leaders Saint Andrew’s and Garden City Golf Club and their members who helped raise over $20,000, that target was again attained. The Met PGA also continues to make a significant annual 28

2015 Year In Review contribution to First Tee, not only with dollars but also as one of the key partners in leading the chapter in their delivery of golf and life skills programming. PGA Junior League continued to grow in 2015. Viewed by many as one of the best programs the PGA of America has offered, Junior League Golf was up over 100% in the Met Section in 2015. The youth sport concept has been a creative way to make golf a fun team sport, ideally to be viewed as a viable alternative to the likes of soccer and baseball. Met PGA professionals who put their arms around the league concept were thrilled with the impact on family engagement and time spent at the club. Equally pleasing was the number of kids who proudly sported their jerseys around the course even when there wasn’t a scheduled practice or match. Similarly, the Drive, Chip & Putt concept has provided a low intensity vehicle for kids to have a competitive golf experience. The qualifiers are truly a sight to see and 2015 hosts: Apawamis, Bethpage, Colonial Springs, Harbor Links, Knollwood, Sunken Meadow and Stanwich all put on a great show. In early April we will celebrate Maidstone’s Sam O’Hara and Kyra Cox from Centennial as they represent the Met PGA at the finals at Augusta National. Darrel Kestner Every year, we all benefit from the connections of our educational program organizers. In the spring, we convened at the Westchester Dinner Theatre to hear from Chuck Cook, best known for his students Keegan Bradley, Jason Dufner, Luke Donald and Joe Ogilvie. Cook was joined on stage by Dr. Sasho MacKenzie. MacKenzie’s approach to the mental game and it’s connection to biomechanics was fascinating. In the fall, 200 PGA Professionals turned out for the Fall Meeting, Forum and Awards program at Bethpage. The Fall Forum featured Cameron McCormick who has gained tremendous notoriety as the coach and instructor for the FEDEX and Tour Champion winner and the phenomenal Masters and US Open Champion, Jordan Spieth. Cameron spoke about driving toward high performance. He definitely has the keys! Add to that our popular Winter Education Series, cutting edge offerings like AimPoint, and appearances by Johnny Miller, Stan Utley, and Roger Cleveland and you’ve got a best in class slate of offerings.

We have so many people to thank than to list them in this short article. It is impossible to acknowledge every club, every professional, every sponsor and every accomplishment without many, many omissions. We have so many wonderful club members, golf professionals, golf course superintendents, and club managers who go out of their way to welcome our events. In addition to the tournament capsule above, we were special guests at places like Fisher’s Island, Friar’s Head, Brookville, Leewood, Woodmere, Muttontown, Century, Sunningdale, Bedford, Rockaway Hunting Club, Old Westbury, The Bridge and Gardiner’s Bay. Professionals and amateurs got to compete side by side in our Pro Am Series events at: Village Club of Sands Point, Whippoorwill, Bonnie Briar, Knollwood, North Fork, Waccabuc, North Hempstead and Fenway. And who could deny the special feeling of what golf is all about when neighboring Tamarack CC agreed to host the annual William A Mitchell Pro Am because Innis Arden was under construction. The Pro Am events culminated in the fall with trips to Atlantic City and Pinehurst.

Clearly our golf community has much to be grateful for, but sadly we also use this space to remember those who we lost. Andy Pergar was a brilliant young man with a giant heart, unmatched dignity and unending professionalism. He served the Whippoorwill Club for many years and was vital to the operation of the club before losing his struggle with cancer. Golf is such a source of positivity, and Andy was that for the people he knew. The Met PGA and the golf community were lucky to have had Andy represent what it means to be a golf professional. We were blessed by his presence and now mourn his absence. Having one section member win a PGA National Award is a momentous, and having two is rare to say the least. The PGA Professional of the Year award is perhaps the top honor bestowed on members. Tom Henderson’s was a wonderful choice as the 2015 recipient. Ironically, a man who has been a mentor to so many used his acceptance to talk about mentorship and thank those who helped him. Matt Dobyns played his way to a second PGA Professional National Championship in route to earning OMEGA PGA Professional Player of the Year honors. While Dobyns will be officially honored at this years’ Professional Championship, it will likely be no match for the Dobyns/Henderson Met PGA party at the Merchandise Show! Assistant’s Special Awards Gil McNally Most Improved Award The Gil McNally Award recognizes one assistant professional each year for his hard work, diligence and application to strive for improvement as a player. The 2015 Gil McNally Award recipient is Kent St. Charles of Willow Ridge Country Club. Kent’s yearlong play on the Assistants Tour was a model of consistency. After finishing in a tie for 27th at the opening Hampshire event, Kent regrouped the following week at Colonial Springs to fire a 1 over par 73 and finish tied for third. That performance spearheaded a spectacular season. In his remaining seven events, Kent finished no lower than 20th. He capped the incredible season with a tie for 11th at the Metropolitan Assistant Championship. That finish earned him his first spot in the National Assistant Championship. After finishing his last bit of coursework, Kent is set to be elected to membership this season. If last year’s performance is any indication, the name St. Charles will appear often on quite a few Section leaderboards. Congratulations, Kent, on a great season and well deserved award!

Scoring Average Award If you shoot lower than Nick Beddow, your chances of winning an Assistants Tour event increase substantially. That, of course, is much easier said the done. The Piping Rock assistant professional produced a banner year in 2015. Nick followed up a T3 performance in the season-opening Hampshire event with a 2nd place finish at the Spring Major at Saint Andrew’s (66) and a win at the June stop at Patriot Hills (67). Nick revisited the winner’s circle one more time at Woodmere where he fired a 1 under par 69. Having never failed to shoot worse than 75 in thirteen competitive rounds, Nick finished the year with a 71.08 scoring average! This recognition is given to the Assistant Professional who finished with the lowest stroke average on the Assistants Tour. In order to be eligible, an assistant must play in at least fifty percent of Assistants Tour events.

TaylorMade adidas Assistant Professional of the Year Award Dennis Dungee, Mount Kisco Country Club, has been selected as the 2015 TaylorMade Assistant Professional of the Year. This is Dennis’ second consecutive such honor. Dennis served as President of the Assistants Association in 2015, 1st Vice President in 2014 and Secretary in 2013. A well rounded professional, Dennis focuses an enormous amount of effort on junior golf and charitable fundraising. In addition to volunteering with The First Tee and building a Met PGA Junior League Golf team at Mount Kisco, Dennis has conducted junior golf fundraising efforts during each of the past four seasons. His devotion to player development within the Section and at his club has earned him a US Kids Top 50 Honorable Mention award. Dennis’s philanthropic efforts continue beyond the boundaries of his Section and club. He as an active participant in Patriot Golf Day activities, runs successful campaigns for Arnie’s Army for Fight Against Prostate Cancer and commits annually to participate in Play for P.I.N.K. outings. A section leader, a committed junior golf advocate and a devoted philanthropist, Dennis Dungee has rightly earned this outstanding award. Congratulations, Dennis! 38

Nine Core Values The First Tee has established Nine Core Values that represent some of the many inherently positive values connected with the game of golf. These Nine Core Values have been incorporated into The First Tee Experience and have been used to name golf holes at several of The First Tee facilities. Honesty — the quality or state of being truthful; not deceptive. Integrity — strict adherence to a standard of value or conduct. Personal honesty and independence.

Confidence — reliance or trust. A feeling of selfassurance Responsibility — accounting for one’s actions; dependable. Perseverance — to persist in an idea, purpose or task despite obstacles. Courtesy — considerate behavior toward others. A polite remark or gesture. Judgment — the ability Garamond to make a Berthold decision or form an opinion.

Sportsmanship — observing the rules of play and winning or losing with grace. Respect — to feel or show deferential regard for; esteem.

First Tee

Junior Golf Association

Now that The First Tee has become well known nationally thanks to the promotion of the Masters and PGA Tour, it is still interesting that many golf aficionados in our own area are not tuned in to the history of the local chapter and the amazing reach that has been achieved since its inception in 2001. The First Tee of Metropolitan New York was part of a vision that Lew Rudin, a pioneer and a philanthropist had for kids and golf. The original announcement of The First Tee came in 1997 in Central Park when leaders of Augusta National, the PGA, USGA, LPGA and PGA Tour along with corporate supporters like Lew Rudin laid out a dream to make golf more affordable and accessible. Four years later the facility at Mosholu was opened to the Metropolitan Chapter, tragically less than 2 weeks after Mr. Rudin’s passing. The guidance of the chapter though was under capable eyes with the MGA and Met PGA playing significant roles along with a number of community and golf-minded leaders of the local business world. The Rudin family inaugurated the Lew Rudin Learning Center at Mosholu and the Board was presided over by Howard Druckman, a friend of the Rudins and Tim Finchem, the chief architect of the national program. Fast forward now and the scope of The First Tee of Metropolitan New York has evolved and continues to grow. New founding members have emerged along with a group called The Young Benefactors, bringing youth and philanthropy closer together. Education and lifeskills, supported by the nine core values, are more important than ever. Facilities throughout the five boroughs, New Jersey, Long Island and Southern CT deliver programs and benefits to thousands of youngsters. From participants in Scholars Programs and Leadership Academies to qualifiers for the Nature Valley Champions Tour First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, the merger of golf and life skills has been a home run of achievements. The Chapter is now moving into a new era as Philip Laskawy, president for the last six years, has turned the gavel over to Ken Whitney. The new leader will certainly try to keep the momentum churning while continuing to explore ways to strengthen and expand the success of golf’s most diverse and unique youth offering.

Met PGA Hope PGA HOPE delivers a new level of enjoyment through golf that enables our nation’s heroes to once again be active and participate in a game that enhances their mental, social, physical, and emotional well-being. PGA HOPE builds this foundation through partnering our PGA Professionals with our local Veterans Administration hospitals. This program is open to all veterans and their families with an emphasis in serving veterans with physical and emotional disabilities who would benefit the most from such a program. In 2015 we worked closely with the Montrose, Castle Point, and Northport VA Hospitals to deliver three programs and had close to 90 veterans graduate the program. The classes had a large diversity of veterans with disabilities including blindness, leg amputation, arm amputation, PTSD, TBI, drug and alcohol addiction, physical limitations, and community assimilation. Met PGA Professional’s support of HOPE has been strong and we thank all of those who participated especially Andy Crane of West Point GC, and Paul Glut of Woodside Acres for hosting our programs in 2015. To get involved in 2016 plan on attending one of our HOPE training seminars this Spring or contact Kelli Clayton for ways to get involved. www.metpgahope.com.

Ah yes, The Zone. You remember that place where you relax your body and mind just enough to shape those random little notions into something useful.

You know: ideas. An elusive place these days, for sure. And yet, the new Lincoln Black Label MKX* is doing

its small part to help you find it. How? By paying attention to nuances of texture and tone, by using only the top 1 percent of hides for leather seating. And then there are the exceptional privileges, like having your vehicle personally picked up by a Lincoln Black Label Specialist if it ever needs service, then delivered back, good as new.** It’s like it turns even your time into a luxury. Who wouldn’t love that? All to inspire that feeling of effortlessness, yet leaving you in total control. Ah yes… The Zone. Remember? LincolnMKX.com/BlackLabel
