PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Welcome to the 2017 season. While much has been accomplished since the Fall meeting, I’m hopeful that you all had some time to relax, review, and recharge for the upcoming months. Last year we celebrated the Centennial anniversary of the PGA of America, but it’s now time to set our sights on the next 100 years. The upcoming season is filled with exciting events and opportunities to make a difference at your facilities and beyond. I want to thank the Nominating Committee for this opportunity to serve as the President of the Metropolitan Section. And I will again thank Heath Wassem for his time, effort, and solid leadership throughout the past three years. Speaking of service, I want to thank the Met PGA Board of Directors for contributing their time and energy as well. We’ve added a couple key committees to concentrate on Finance, Partners & Sponsors, and the Foundation. For the Foundation, a committee chair position has been created to oversee and report on Section efforts with PGA HOPE, Junior Golf, First Tee, and Player Development, including PGA Junior League. Although the grass hasn’t been growing, many of our Section Committees have been very active throughout the past few months. Our Winter Education Series continues to grow and thrive. A special thanks to our Met Section professionals who have provided the sites and the excellent content. Congratulations to Steve Scott and our Education Committee who have put together the first District 2 Teaching & Coaching Summit. This great event on April 25th at Fiddler’s Elbow in NJ will combine talent and attendance from the Met, New Jersey, and Philadelphia Sections. As proof of our strength in golf instruction, additional Met Section professionals have recently joined the GOLF Top 100 Teachers List. Once again, the Met Section had a very strong showing in National tournaments during the winter months, and we congratulate all our Met Section winners. Our 2017 Section tournament schedule is nearly complete, and features fantastic sites for our Championships and Pro-Ams. Your support and involvement with our tournaments, Pro-ams, foundation activities, education, and our social media/public relations efforts is encouraged and much appreciated. Whenever possible, please also take time to recognize and support our Partners & Sponsors, as they make what we offer possible. Congratulations also goes out in advance to all of our Section Award winners for their incredible dedication and achievement. I can assure you that the Section officers, the Board of Directors, and Nominating Committee are dedicated to serving and representing all members of our Section. Additionally, we are so fortunate to have an amazing staff managing the active Met Section schedule. In his first full year as Executive Director, Jeff Voorheis has done a great job on all fronts and his leadership has been exceptional. I can assure you that all our departments are in very capable hands due to the commitment of the rest of our team which include: Kelli Clayton, Dan Kiley, Dan Frankel, Kaitlin Sabbagh, Kevin Rodine, Paul Giordano and their supporting crew! The Year Ahead Who is your PGA Pro? Of course, we know who we are and what we mean to the game of golf—but does our community? Many members can remember the PGA badge poster that attempted to demonstrate the many “hats” worn by a golf professional: Trained Instructor, Publicist, Business Manager, Etiquette Coach, Inspirationalist, Accomplished Player, Personnel Manager, Junior Golf Mentor, Motivator, Community Leader, Tournament Director, Financial Consultant, Event Planner, Innovator, Golf Shop Operator, Rules Authority, Clinician, Event Coordinator, Skilled Clubfitter, Humanitarian, Inventory Manager, Outing Director, Team Captain, Club Repairperson, Master of Ceremonies, Competitor, Expert Merchandiser, Handicapper, Facility Director, Equipment Consultant, Service Trainer, Fundraiser, Food and Beverage Manager, Counselor, Private Tutor, Promoter of Golf, Friend. As an association, we need to do our absolute best to make sure that everyone in our golf ecosystem is reminded of all the things their PGA Pro is. 2017 promises to be another fast paced and exciting year. We open our activities with a business meeting at Old Westbury in late March, with a number of education and tournament opportunities to follow. Early April always brings the best of the best to the Westchester Dinner Theatre. This year, we will learn from putting guru Phil Kenyon and Blast Motion’s Mike Bentley. In addition to top notch education, the 2016 Professional of the Year, Brad Worthington will be honored alongside Player of the Year Rob Labritz. In a very special Sam Snead Award presentation, we will have the opportunity to recognize Charlie Robson’s contributions to the game of golf and the Met PGA. In the weeks following the forum, the Met PGA will travel to a number of great venues for our Taylor Made Pro-Assistant’s events and the opening Player of the Year point events, the MasterCard Long Island and Westchester PGA Championships. Our relationships with many of our sponsors mirror the longevity of the association. Lincoln’s sponsorships of the Section Championship, Women’s Met Open and Pro-Ams have been mainstays. MasterCard is a priceless partner in sponsoring the Match Play Championships as well as player development initiatives. Lenox Advisors passion for golf shines brightly as they fill the field for the NY State Open Pro-Am and manage the $100,000.00 plus purse for the tournament proper. Mohegan Sun, National Car Rental and Empire City Casino add fun to the Pro-Am offerings while OMEGA and the Treiber Group help reward our Players of the Year at the seasonending stableford Treiber Memorial. Our golf industry partners also jump on board and support almost every other event on the agenda. While tournaments will always be a critical component of Met PGA activities, looking to the future of our game is an intensely growing priority. Player Development is and will continue to be a daily charge for everyone associated with this great game. The Met PGA Foundation will steam ahead based on its three pillars: Junior Golf, Military, and Diversity. The robust Met PGA Junior Golf Tour has been the cornerstone for years, most recently growing to 1,300 plus members and over 120 tournaments. The Met PGA’s commitment to the First Tee is well documented and we have a renewed vigor for identifying and bringing golf to those previously underserved in our communities. Finally, perhaps one of the most impactful programs we have ever administered, Met PGA HOPE allows us to physically connect with and thank members of our military through the game of golf. Despite the challenge of exiting in a fast paced and ever changing culture, the unique and intangible benefits that playing golf delivers to its patrons are many, and they are undeniable. As the stewards of our wonderful game we must continue to accentuate these great benefits, keeping in mind that the mechanism of helping customers experience golf might be different or unconventional. That ability to innovate has been a trait of Met PGA Professionals for a long time and will be a key ingredient to our future success.

Education Among the most critical aspects of our association’s programming, are the Educational offerings for members to continuously upgrade their knowledge basis and develop new ways to engage with customers. The Met PGA Education Committee has been second to none when it comes to developing relevant content for PGA professionals. While instruction and golf swing theory will always be a focal point of PGA member education, perhaps most impressive is the vision of the Education Committee in presenting a well-rounded series of events to help bolster a golf professional’s arsenal in all aspects of the business. The Educational “majors” are our annual Spring and Fall Forums, and once again neither left much to be desired in 2016. The Spring Educational Forum featured one of the most renowned instructors the game has even known. Butch Harmon, best known for his work with Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and most recently, Rickie Fowler, was engaging, entertaining, and interesting. Butch even managed to reference the famous final match of the 1996 US Amateur between Tiger Woods and Steve Scott. We came full circle in October when Steve agreed to be the featured speaker at the annual Met PGA Junior Golf Awards Ceremony. Part of the story of the 1996 US Amateur that is often forgotten, was a perfect message of sportsmanship to the young players and parents in attendance that day. With a lead on Tiger Woods with just a few holes to play, and while putting on the 16th -- the 34th hole of their match – Steve asked Woods to re-mark his ball to the side of his original mark so it wouldn’t be in his line. Woods did, but after Steve putted he noticed that Woods had not moved his ball back to its original location. If Woods would have putted without moving his ball back he would have incurred a loss of hole penalty, thereby losing the match. Having no interest in winning on a rules technicality Steve quickly alerted Woods, who moved his marker back to its original position. Steve’s grace in competition, and donation of his time to speak, was an incredibly strong message to our junior players. At the Fall Forum, we were blessed to spend time with Dr. Bhrett McCabe at Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway. Dr. McCabe, a former pitcher for the LSU Tigers, spoke to us about The Mindside and the science behind sports performance and psychology. Dr. McCabe is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist whose academic credentials, professional approach, and understanding of competing in high-pressure environments have served as a foundation for his rapidly growing practice and influence in the field. Dr. McCabe’s strong affinity for PGA professionals was evident and his approach was inspirational and motivational. While the spring and fall events are headliners, the rest of the schedule provides incredible variety, relevant topics and unexpected treats. Over 300 professionals attended programs on topics including: Putting, Club Fitting, Junior Player Development, Using Statistics to Elevate Performance, Growing Your Brand and Value, Financial Literacy and Planning, Movement of the Human Body, Software and Technology, Building Successful Women’s Program, and Teaching Disabled Students. Late in the year, our Roundtable discussions provide professionals an opportunity to share information and discuss club issues.

Similar to its Long Island counterpart, the TaylorMade Westchester Pro Assistant Championship at Patriot Hills Golf Club saw two clubs share victory. Greg Bisconti, Saint Andrew’s, paired with Ambry Bishop and Tyler Jaramillo to shoot a 7 under par 64 and tie Wykgayl’s Ben Hoffhine and Paul Selvaggio.

It was a family affair at the TaylorMade Long Island Pro Assistant Championship at Cold Spring Country Club as Jason and Liz Caron fired an impressive 8 under par 63 to match the prolific teams from Fresh Meadow. Head Professional Matt Dobyns teamed with Keith Dicciani, Josh Fritz and Caleb Wilson to share the spoils with the Carons.

After waiting eleven years to secure his second match play title, Rob Labritz wasted no time picking up his third in clinical fashion. The Glen Arbor head professional ‘s victory kick-started a spectacular season at the MasterCard Westchester PGA Championship at Sleepy Hollow Country Club. Met PGA Magazine 2016 Year in Review

Anthony Aruta, North Shore, had not played the 18th hole all week at the MasterCard Long Island PGA Championship at Engineers Country Club. He, of course, found himself standing on the 18th tee box all square with Tam O’Shanter’s Josh Rackley in the championship match unsure of what club to hit. He selected driver and striped a shot that just squeaked left of the fairway bunker he forgot lay in the middle of the landing zone. The disaster was averted and after Josh failed to get up and down from an unfortunate lie, Anthony drilled his par putt to clinch his first ever Met PGA major victory.

After defeating his sister-in-law, Marjorie Jones, in the quarterfinals, Sleepy Hollow Country Club head professional David Young defeated Meadow Brook’s Bill Van Orman on the 18th hole to capture the MasterCard Senior Match Play Championship title at Whippoorwill Club. 11

Steve Scott has been knocking on the door at several Met PGA major championships in recent years. At North Hempstead Country Club, the Paramount head professional finally unlocked that door and captured the POLO Golf Head Professional Championship. Steve carded a 5 under par 65 in round one to open a three shot lead. His previous tournament experience allowed him to remain calm under final round pressure and maintain that three shot lead to secure the victory.

Tough conditions faced competitors at North Hempstead Country Club in the final round of the POLO Golf Senior Head Professional Championship. Leader Ron McDougal, Golf & Body, knew that and figured a score around even par would be enough to secure victory. Darrell Kestner refused to simply give his good friend a victory without putting up a fight. The Deepdale director of golf shot a 6 under par 64 to force a playoff. Darrell’s magic could not translate to the extra holes as Ron picked up a much-deserved title.

The season of stroke play playoffs continued at Willow Ridge Country Club in the Lincoln Women’s Met Open Championship. Friar’s Head assistant professional Becky McDaid defeated first time participant Renee Skidmore, GC of Purchase, to capture her fourth title.

The New York State Open featured two constant themes of the tournament season – a playoff to determine the tournament champion and Rob Labritz hoisting the trophy. Renowned Bethpage Black hosted the New York State’s best golfers and again provided the ultimate test. That it ended with a playoff between perhaps the State’s two premier golfers, Rob Labritz and Matt Dobyns, only added to the intrigue.

Rob Labritz continued his stellar season with a decisive victory at the Metropolitan Professional Championship at Fairview Country Club and the Golf Club of Purchase. Three rounds in the 60s led to a seven shot victory for the Glen Arbor head professional and his third tournament title in five years. The picturesque Fisher’s Island hosted this year’s Women’s Stroke Play Championship where Innis Arden’s Jessica Carafiello successfully defended her title. After an uncharacteristic and sloppy opening 76, the two-time champion fired a 3 under par 69 in the final round to erase a three shot deficit. The annual visit to Bethpage Red for the National Car Rental Assistants Championship presents a daunting task. Over one hundred and seventy-five assistant professionals compete for the title and twelve spots in the National Car Rental Assistants Professional Championship. Kyle Higgins, Inwood Country Club, arrived on-site looking to win and a first round 3 under par 67 catapulted him to the top of the leaderboard. If he was nervous to begin the final round, Kyle sure didn’t show it in his golf game. The Inwood assistant opened with seven straight pars then found his groove with back to back birdies to close his outward nine. With a strong field challenging the Inwood assistant to stumble, Kyle proved up for the task pouring in two more birdies on the back nine to solidify his lead and win his first Met PGA major tournament. 13 13

Champions Spotlight

The 2016 Lincoln Met PGA Championship will be one to remember. After needing a playoff last year to capture his first Met PGA Championship, Matt Dobyns wasted no time adding to his tally. Played at Siwanoy Country Club in honor of the PGA of America’s Centennial Celebration, the Fresh Meadow head professional nearly broke the course record after firing a 62 in round 2. That incredible round was bookended by rounds of 67 and 68 and earned Matt a ten shot victory.

The Paramount team featuring head professional Steve Scott and assistant professional Michael Jackmack certainly came to play at the Met PGA Senior Junior Championship. The pair shot a combined 16 under par over 27 holes to edge to dynamic Peter Procops and Pete Ballo team by one shot.

John Kuntz and Frank Livoti, Garden City CC, carded an impressive 12 under par to win by two inthe Lincoln/Club Car Long Island Pro-President at Woodmere Club.

Chris Marinaro, Muttontown, and Ben Polland, Deepdale, teamed together again in the Met PGA Team Championship and put on a stunning display. The two paired to shoot 8 under par 62 at Gardiner’s Bay on day one and an 8 under par 64 at The Bridge on day two to secure the win by five shots. Golf Club of Purchase head professional Carl Alexander started his Senior career in ideal fashion – with a victory at the Empire City Casino Met PGA Senior Championship at Metropolis. Carl backed up a 2 under par 69 in round one with a scintillating 4 under par 67 to defeat the dangerous Darrell Kestner by two shots and claim the trophy.

Quaker Ridge’s Brian Gaffney and Marc Friedman shot an amazing 10 under par to blitz the field by five shots and win the Lincoln/Club Car Westchester Pro President at Westchester Country Club.

For the second year in a row, the Met PGA Senior Team Championship came down to the wire. Charlie Bolling and Bill Van Orman, Meadow Brook, shot 12 under par over two days to hold off the hard-charging tandem of Shawn Baker, Greens at Half Hollow, and Michael Jackmack, Paramount and earn victory. 15

Metropolis’ Craig Thomas and Rick Blank tied with Saint Andrew’s Tyler Jaramillo and Andrew Powell to win the National Car Rental Whitey Voight Pro Am Championship at the newly renovated Sunningdale Country Club. The two teams shot 7 under par 63.

Mill River’s Jason Caron and Nancy Morris squeaked out a one shot victory at Cold Spring Country Club to win the Lincoln Long Island Pro Lady Championship with an impressive 3 under par 68.

It seems Mill River’s Jason Caron certainly takes care of his club members! After winning the Lincoln Long Island Pro Lady Championship earlier in the month, the Mill River head professional teamed with Paul Gabrielle twenty days later to win the National Car Rental Jack Mallon Pro Am at RockWheatley Hills Golf Club brought out the best in all ville Links. Jason shot a course record 9 under par 63 en route at the annual season-ending individual tournament. Tam O’Shanter head professional Mark Brown carded to the three shot victory. sixteen birdies in three rounds to capture his second Treiber Memorial Tournament of Champions title in three years.

In the Treiber Memorial Tournament of Champions Senior Division Carl Alexander continued the blistering start to his senior career by notching his second win in as many attempts.

The 2016 Met PGA Travel Pro headed to the spectacular Streamsong Resort where Garden City CC tamed two Top 100 courses to come away with victory. Head professional John Kuntz served as a steadying influence all week for Tom Barbaro, Chris Trapani and Nick Worsthorn.

2016 Squire Cup was held at Fenway Golf Club. The Assistant Team were victorious over the Head Professionals.

2016 Year In Review Charles L. Robson began working for the Met PGA in 1972. His salary, as he tells the story, didn’t quite align with his father’s idea of full time employment. Thankfully for the thousands of people Charlie has influenced in the game of golf, he didn’t listen to his dad on this one. As monumental as was the celebration of the PGA’s 100th birthday, the fact that 2016 will be remembered as the year Charlie stepped down from his post as Executive Director of the Met PGA Section is astonishing. Charlie’s wisdom, guidance and perseverance are the cornerstone on which the association was built and every member has been impacted or helped directly or indirectly by his tireless efforts. In perfect form, Charlie’s transition away from the daily activities of the association has been ideal. He continues to support the staff and work on projects that will impact the future of the game he loves and the professionals that deliver it. We moved on in 2016, but luckily for golf in the Met Section, we’ve moved on with Charlie’s continued guidance. The Metropolitan Section professionals have gotten very comfortable atop local and national leaderboards, and 2016 was more of the same. OMEGA Met PGA Player of the Year Rob Labritz added another year of wins and top finishes to his already astounding playing resume. GlenArbor’s Director of Golf started fast, winning the MasterCard Westchester PGA (for a third time). He finished T-13 at the PGA Professional Championship, earning a ticket to the PGA Championship at Baltusrol. Rob then ripped through the championship season with wins at the Westchester Open, Lenox Advisors NY State Open, and Metropolitan PGA Professional Championship. He added a T-11 at the Met Open, and T-3 at the Lincoln Met PGA Championship to cap off an incredibly impressive season. Believe it or not, Labritz did leave some room for a number of other notable performances. Though coming up just short in the Player of the Year race, Tam O’Shanter’s Mark Brown had what most would consider a career season. Brown won the Met Open Championship (his third), and the Treiber Memorial TOC. He narrowly missed a chance to win the PGA Professional Championship, finishing 2nd and qualifying for a berth in the PGA Championship field. Brown also finished T6 in the POLO Golf Met PGA Head Professional Championship, T3 in the Long Island Open, T6 in the Lenox Advisors New York State Open Championship, and T9 in the Metropolitan Professional Championship. North Shore’s Anthony Aruta claimed his first major win in the section, taking the MasterCard Long Island PGA Championship title at Engineers. The POLO Golf Head Professional Champion was Steve Scott from Paramount. While the Met PGA and Siwanoy CC were celebrating their 100th birthdays together, Fresh Meadow’s Matt Dobyns made some history of his own. Dobyns’ 10-shot victory in the Lincoln Met PGA Championship was fueled by a second round 62 that included a bogey on his final hole as he was attempting to hole out for 59. On the Senior circuit, GC of Purchase Director of Golf Carl Alexander quickly indoctrinated himself, finishing T6 at the MGA Senior Open just five weeks after his 50th birthday. Carl went on to win both the Empire City Casino Met PGA Senior Championship and the Senior Treiber Memorial TOC. The POLO Golf Senior Head Pro Championship title was taken by Ron McDougal of Golf & Body, while Sleepy Hollow’s David Young won the MasterCard Senior Match Play Championship. Jessica Carafiello of Innis Arden topped the Women’s Player of the Year list after winning the Stroke Play Championship and finishing 3rd in the Women’s Met Open. The other major event for the women is a Match Play Championship taken by Monique Thoresz of Apawamis. The Metropolitan PGA professionals are champions beyond hoisting trophies after winning golf tournaments. The Met PGA’s Foundation continued much of the great work it has done over the years while always looking for new ways to serve those in need. Chris Kenney and Ray Ford again called Patterson Club and Rolling Hills CC to action, leading the section to another astonishing total donation of $400,000 to the Folds of Honor’s Patriot Golf Day appeal. Patterson, Rolling Hills, Cherry Valley, Tuxedo, and Westchester raised approximately half of that total between them, while Connecticut GC, Hudson National, Silvermine, Metropolis, Laurel Links, and The Bridge each eclipsed the $10,000 mark. While the funds raised for the education of the families of fallen Patriots is remains a critical part of our mission, the Met PGA’s commitment to the military has taken on a life of 28

2016 Year In Review its own with our PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) program. Using golf as a vehicle for recreation, camaraderie and fun for veterans who might not otherwise pick up a club, we have created an indescribable atmosphere and a bond between PGA members and military heroes. In what many said was among the most impactful things they’d ever done, Met PGA professionals gave their time, expertise and friendship to great men and women who suffered physically or mentally following their service to our county. The cliché about getting more out than you put in couldn’t be more applicable in this case. The importance of the Met PGA’s long lasting charity, junior golf, might be at an all-time high. The fact that over 1,300 kids participate in a schedule of events that lasts about 60 days and includes over 115 events demonstrates that the game has a healthy underpinning. Several years ago, then-Section President Rick Meskell ushered the challenge for the Met PGA to raise $100,000.00 a year to help promote Junior Golf. Thanks to the effort of a few clubs, including perennial leaders Saint Andrew’s and Garden City Golf Club and their members who helped raise over $20,000, that target was again attained. The Met PGA also continues to make a significant annual contribution to First Tee, not only with dollars but also as one of the key partners in leading the chapter in their delivery of golf and life skills programming. The successes from PGA Junior League Golf continued to grow amass 2016. Viewed by many as one of the best programs the PGA of America has offered, the number Junior League Golf teams in the Met Section has increased each season. The youth sport concept has been a creative way to make golf a fun team sport, ideally to be viewed as a viable alternative to the likes of soccer and baseball. Met PGA professionals who put their arms around the league concept were thrilled with the impact on family engagement and time spent at the club. Equally pleasing was the number of kids who proudly sported their jerseys around the course even when there wasn’t a scheduled practice or match. Similarly, the Drive, Chip & Putt concept has provided a low intensity vehicle for kids to have a competitive golf experience. The qualifiers are truly a sight to see and 2016 hosts: Apawamis, Bethpage, Colonial Springs, Harbor Links, Knollwood, Sunken Meadow and Stanwich all put on a great show. Every year, we all benefit from the connections of our educational program organizers. In the spring, we convened at the Westchester Dinner Theatre to hear from Butch Harmon, best known for his work with some of the greatest players the game has ever seen. In the fall, more than 200 PGA Professionals turned out for the Fall Meeting, Forum and Awards program at Empire City Casino. The Fall Forum featured Dr. Bhrett McCabe who has gained tremendous notoriety discussing his studies of the science behind sports performance and psychology. Add to that our popular Winter Education Series, cutting edge offerings like AimPoint, and BLAST motion, and appearances by some a number of the most reputable instructors anywhere and you’ve got plenty to choose from. We have so many people to thank than to list them in this short article. It is impossible to acknowledge every club, every professional, every sponsor and every accomplishment without many, many omissions. We have so many wonderful club members, golf professionals, golf course superintendents, and club managers who go out of their way to welcome our events. In addition to the tournament capsule above, we were special guests at places like: Bethpage, The Bridge, Brooklawn, Cold Spring, Colonial Springs, Connecticut GC, CC of Darien, Eisenhower Park, Elmwood, Engineers, Fairview, Fishers Island, Gardiner’s Bay, Huntington, Lake Isle, Mansion Ridge, Metropolis, GC at Middle Bay, North Hempstead, North Hills, Old Oaks, Paramount, Patriot Hills, Port Jefferson, GC of Purchase, Rockville Links, Rolling Hills, Saint Andrew’s, Shinnecock Hills, Silvermine, Siwanoy, Streamsong, Sunningdale, Tamarack, Waccabuc, Wee Burn, Westchester, Westchester Hills, Wheatley Hills, Whippoorwill, Willow Ridge, Woodmere, Woodway, and Wykagyl. Professionals and amateurs got to compete side by side in our Pro Am Series events at: Pound Ridge, Metropolis, Tuxedo, Pelham, Montauk Downs, Sands Point, Innis Arden, and Seawane. The Pro Am events culminated in the fall with trips to Atlantic City and Streamsong. Our thanks to everyone who helped make 2016 a great year for the Met PGA.

Assistantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Special Awards Gil McNally Most Improved Award The Gil McNally Award recognizes one assistant professional each year for his hard work, diligence and application to strive for improvement as a player. The 2016 Gil McNally Award recipient is Kirk Oguri of Greens at Half Hollow. If you have never heard of Kirk Oguri, well in this Section you are probably the only one. For years, Kirk has combined stellar play on the course with a zest and aptitude for golf equipment and teaching. That combination resulted in two awards this year â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Met PGA Teacher of the Year and Gil McNally Most Improved. Kirk Oguri played early, played often and played well last season on the Assistants Tour. In ten events, Kirk finished inside the Top-25 nine times and, perhaps more spectacularly, finished inside the Top-16 eight times! The Greens at Half Hollow assistant saved his best for last, however. He closed his Assistants Tour season with a T-5 at Middle Bay, T-3 at Tamarack,T-16 at Port Jefferson and a T-2 at the Assistants Tour Championship at Huntington CC. Kirk Oguri is constantly searching for ways to improve his game. It is the hallmark of a good PGA Professional. Whether it is an equipment adjustment, tip from a fellow golf pro or a piece of advice from a Twitter follower, he will look to incorporate it into his golf game and teaching with the earnest hope of continually improving both. Congratulations, Kirk, on a great season and well deserved award! Scoring Average Award Pete Ballo certainly wasted no time acclimating to the Assistants Tour in his first year. Such an impressive list of results can only elicit reactions of awe and amazement. The Old Oaks assistant professional played in eleven events on the Assistants Tour in 2016. In those eleven events he finished inside the top 5 a whopping nine times! He won his inaugural event, Assistants Spring Meeting at Old Oaks, as well as the events at Waccabuc and Silvermine. This recognition is given to the Assistant Professional who finished with the lowest stroke average on the Assistants Tour. Now that The First Tee has become well known nationally thanks to the promotion of the Masters and PGA Tour, it is still interesting that many golf aficionados in our own area are not tuned in to the history of the local chapter and the amazing reach that has been achieved since its inception in 2001. The First Tee of Metropolitan New York was part of a vision that Lew Rudin, a pioneer and a philanthropist had for kids and golf. The original announcement of The First Tee came in 1997 in Central Park when leaders of Augusta National, the PGA, USGA, LPGA and PGA Tour along with corporate supporters like Lew Rudin laid out a dream to make golf more affordable and accessible. Four years later the facility at Mosholu was opened to the Metropolitan Chapter, tragically less than 2 weeks after Mr. Rudinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passing. The guidance of the chapter though was under capable eyes with the MGA and Met PGA playing significant roles along with a number of community and golf-minded leaders of the local business world. The Rudin family inaugurated the Lew Rudin Learning Center at Mosholu and the Board was presided over by Howard Druckman, a friend of the Rudins and Tim Finchem, the chief architect of the national program. Fast forward now and the scope of The First Tee of Metropolitan New York has evolved and continues to grow. New founding members have emerged along with a group called The Young Benefactors, bringing youth and philanthropy closer together. Education and lifeskills, supported by the nine core values are more important than ever. Facilities throughout the five boroughs, New Jersey, Long Island and Southern CT deliver programs and benefits to thousands of youngsters. From participants in Scholars Programs and Leadership Academies to qualifiers for the Nature Valley Champions Tour First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, the merger of golf and life skills has been a home run of achievements. The Chapter is now moving into a new era as Philip Laskawy, President for the last six years has turned the gavel over to Ken Whitney. The new leader will certainly try to keep the momentum churning while continuing to explore ways to strengthen and expand the success of golfâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most diverse and unique youth offering.

Junior Golf Tour 2016 was another record year for the Junior Tour with nearly 1,300 members and over 120 events celebrated at our end of the year Awards Ceremony at Winged Foot GC. Thanks to our title sponsor, EY, we were able to make advancements and improvements for the Junior Tour to reach new heights. Whether at a beginning level competing for the love of the game or competing at the highest levels nationally with endless aspirations, we continue to strive to be everything to everybody.

Player Development DRIVE, CHIP, AND PUTT This year the Met Section hosted six local qualifiers and a sub-regional qualifier for the national Drive, Chip, and Putt competition which has become a tradition unlike any other taking place the Sunday before the Masters at Augusta National. This year our local qualifiers took place at Apawamis Club, Colonial Springs GC, Harbor Links GC, Knollwood CC, The Stanwich Club, and Sunken Meadow Park GC. Our sub-regional took place at Bethpage State Park GC. The regional was hosted by the New England section at The Country Club on September 25th but will be returning to the Met Section in 2017. Unfortunately, for the first time in four years none of our members from the Junior Tour qualified to compete at Augusta next April. Thank you to all of the professionals who hosted qualifiers for us at the sites listed above and making this all possible. In 2017, the Met Section will be hosting the Northeast Regional at Winged Foot GC on October 1.

PGA JUNIOR LEAGUE GOLF In just three years, our PGA Junior League Golf program has expanded to 106 teams and over 1500 players! Congratulations to the Suffolk County Division 1 All-Star team, captained by Nick Banks of St. Georgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s G&CC, for advancing to the regional competition at Cranberry Valley CC in Cape Cod, MA. Unfortunately, they did not advance to nationals but we are very proud of them for representing our section!

A special thank you to Silvermine GC who hosted the 2016 PGA Junior League Met Section Championship on August 29 and the many assistants who came out to volunteer. The teams with the best record in their division played off to be one of the six teams representing their region at the championship, which included: Nassau CC, NYC First Tee @ Mosholu, Pine Hills CC, PJ Rotella, Silvermine GC, and Sleepy Hollow CC. After very close matches throughout the day, Silvermine GC, captained by Caleb Marsh, took home the trophy in spectacular fashion. Congratulations!

Met PGA Hope PGA HOPE Since PGA HOPEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inception in 2015 we have served over 275 veterans. This year, along with our West Point and Long Island sites, we added a third site serving the Bronx VA. In 2016 alone, 177 veterans participated in the Spring and Fall classes. The success of our program can be directly attributed to the dedication of our PGA Professionals, our local clubs, and the strong relationships that we have built with our local VA Hospitals. The stories that emerge from this program are inspirational and continuously prove that golf in its purest state has the power to change, and even save lives.Â Thank you to all the professionals who came out to dedicate their time, our sponsors, and all the clubs who have hosted fundraisers to benefit this program.
