THE WORLD’S DESTINATION
FOR HIGHER EDUCATION It is said that, “New England is a state of mind.” It is equally true that “New England is a state of minds”—perhaps the most concentrated gathering of learners, professors, and higher education institutions in the entire world. New England is where American higher education began and where students and leaders from around the globe continue to come for knowledge, creativity, innovation and expertise. Many visitors to New England arrive knowing just a handful of famous New England colleges and universities, but leave awed by the breadth of the region’s higher education institutions. Indeed, it is the diversity of New England’s 250-plus campuses—public and private, two-year and four-year, religious and secular, professional and liberal arts—that makes the region world-class. It’s New England where colleges and universities prepare students for occupations that may not have existed when those students first stepped on campus, where research labs spin off new companies and industries, and where vibrant campuses energize their surrounding towns and cities. New England colleges and universities educate over 960,000 students annually from around the globe, sending them forth as teachers, skilled medical technicians, entrepreneurs, engineers, poets, and future Nobel

laureates. It is a 2nd “home” to nearly 50,000 foreign students and over 12,000 scholars from across the globe. Moreover, many other students, from every corner of the world, access courses and degree programs 24/7 from New England’s colleges via online learning opportunities. Collaboration and innovation are the primary roles of the New England Board of Higher Education. Created in 1955, NEBHE’s mission is to expand, through interstate cooperation, the education opportunities and services available to the region’s residents, with a focus on college affordability, access, and success. A prime example is NEBHE’s “Tuition Break” program, which provides a discount on the out-of-state tuition students pay at public colleges and universities in the other New England states when they pursue specialized majors. More than 9,200 students take advantage of this program every year, accessing over 750 unique and cutting-edge academic degree programs and saving $7,000, on average, each
year on their tuition bills. In 2012, students and families saved $53 million dollars on tuition! Established in 1957, Tuition Break has provided New England students and families with over $1 billion in savings. And the six states have saved untold millions of dollars by avoiding duplication of programs already available in other New England states. Learn more about the program in this guide or visit our website at www.nebhe.org/tuitionbreak. NEBHE thanks Boston magazine for the opportunity to work together to produce the 2013 Guide to Colleges and Universities. We trust it will be a valuable resource connecting you with the region’s wide array of colleges and opening doors for continued learning, degree attainment, career advancement, and intellectual enrichment. With such a rich diversity of institutions, people and opportunities, it’s no wonder New England is the world’s destination for higher education. Q Michael K. Thomas is president and CEO of the New England Board of Higher Education and publisher of The New England Journal of Higher Education. Email: mthomas@nebhe.org.
That can be a really helpful way to gain greater focus before hitting the road,” notes Theresa Urist, Director of College Counseling at Prospect Hill Academy charter school. “Visit schools and trust your gut,” Urist says. She notes that students are really intuitive when it comes to determining whether a particular school will meet their needs. “While it’s critical to keep an open mind in the process, it is also really important to visit schools and trust your feelings about them. I once had a mom call me, highly upset, telling me that she had driven two hours to take her daughter to see a college that I had recommended; her daughter didn’t even get out of the car,” notes Urist. Her response: ‘Well, we certainly got some good data, didn’t we?’” Danielle da Silva, Director of College Counseling at Beaver Country Day School, comments that exploration begins with active engagement. “Talk to people—in person or in social media communities. I encourage students to visit campuses (or their online equivalents) and have conversations—not just with the tour guide but with that guy

the student and the college to get to know each other. Capolupo shares a few strategies for students when using social media:
• When inviting attention through social media, make sure that you are aware that it is a public forum. Be appropriate, nice, and safety-conscious. • Be authentic. Capolupo notes that when
USING SOCIAL MEDIA Students today can learn about colleges through social media by joining Facebook groups, watching YouTube videos, and following Twitter feeds. Once a student connects with a college through social media, the college can then learn about the student too. Catherine C. Capolupo, Assistant Vice President, Undergraduate Admission and Marketing at Simmons College, says that the amount a college looks at a social media profile varies by institution. While a student’s academic record is first and foremost in the decision-making process, social media gives an opportunity for both
a prospective student invites her to look at a video, she does not expect it to be the work of a 40-year-old professional. She also advises to be conscientious about the comments, images, photos, and content associated with your online profile.
• Use the social media experience to allow colleges to get to know you. If a student sends Capolupo an article she wrote or a video clip she produced, Capolupo will take the time to follow the link to get a better sense of the student. • When considering a college, join its social media groups. Use these opportunities to ask questions and get feedback from current students, families, and alumni.
• Be careful with what you are posting and how much personal information you are sharing online.
PAYING FOR COLLEGE “Unless you have $250,000 saved for college, the first thing you should look at is your overall financial picture,” notes Todd Fothergill, Strategies for College Inc. Founder and CEO. He recommends that ideally you start saving for college straight out of the maternity ward. Jim Femia, president of Atlantic Investment Partners, agrees that planning is the name of the game when developing a strategy for financing your child’s college education. “Take the time to develop a plan for paying for college. Don’t figure it out as you go. You will miss out on opportunities by not having a solid financial plan for paying for college,” he says. Femia underscores the importance of families filling out the requisite paperwork – including the Free Application for Federal

glare of brand names,” notes Fothergill. “The most important thing is to be true to yourself and make sure you feel good about being there. Students who fall into the top third of the typically admitted students are usually content,” he adds.
A NUMBERS GAME
“Colleges will always look first at a kid’s transcript. The other thing I often tell kids is ‘be here now.’ I worry that the college process has resulted in students turning into little human checklists as they try to position themselves for admission to selective schools. There’s a lot of unnecessary stress in this process as kids run themselves ragged in an effort to cover all the bases they think they need to cover to be competitive,” says Urist.
How many colleges should a student apply to? When asked if there is a magic number, da Silva responds, “No. Nothing in this process, sadly, is magic, or all our lives would be so much easier!” Fothergill suggests targeting between six to eight colleges that best fit the student’s profile. It is important to be realistic about the playing field. Statistically the chances of getting into a top college are limited given the number of highly credentialed students, top athletes, international students, and political factors. “Oftentimes students walk by a good opportunity blinded by the
