A

l ittle over a year ago I stepped into the role of editor for MetroFamily. I could have never guessed the journey we’d traverse together in that short time, especially over the past several months. The future feels uncertain as we ponder what the year ahead holds for us. As parents we wonder and worry about the little things, like when our family fun plans can return to normal, as well as the big things, like the toll COVID-19 has taken on our community and families and each of our roles in seeking racial justice.

“Our community as a whole, and you our community of parents, have stepped up to support those around you.” One thing, though, is certain. Our community as a whole, and you our community of parents, have stepped up to support those around you. We’ve watched local businesses and organizations rally to help sustain families. We’ve watched you, parents, shoulder your own concerns as you also care for the physical, emotional and mental health of your children. We’ve watched white families seek

to listen to and understand families of color, and parents of all colors provide resources about having conversations about race and racism with our children. In that vein of supporting others, we had a huge response to our annual Family Favorites Awards, nominated and voted on by you our readers, as you sought to show your favorite local businesses how much they are needed and appreciated. Find the results starting on page 20 of this “Everything” Guide, with resources from pediatricians and therapy services to after-school activities and locales for family fun. You’ll want to hang on to this issue for year-round access to the best parentvetted resources in OKC. In addition to family supports and services, we could all use a big dose of FUN right now, so in these pages you’ll find family adventures to add to every season of your calendar. Both cognizant of our current socially-distant environment and looking toward the future, check out this year’s Grandparent Guide on page 74 with road trips for the older and younger generations to enjoy together, plus scope statewide spots where STEM learning abounds on page 12. Don’t miss the dish from local moms on their favorite locally-owned restaurants and shops in the metro on page 68. From family fun to parenting resources, thank you for allowing us the privilege to walk this journey with you of raising children and seeking solidarity. With gratitude,

EXPLORING OKLAHOMA WITH CHILDREN

STEM

ACROSS OKLAHOMA

BY HEIDE BRANDES. PHOTOS PROVIDED.

Weekend adventures for the family can be a source of fun and escape anytime of year but these outings can also serve as a perfect opportunity to sneak in some science, technology, engineering and mathematics. More focus is continually placed on the importance of getting kids involved in STEM to prepare them for their futures. But it isn’t always easy to get children excited about anything related to education. Thankfully, even while summer and school breaks can lead to the dreaded “brain drain,” these are also perfect times to explore new places with STEM-related activities. In fact, parents can slip STEM fun into their children’s daily lives all year long! Every day can be an opportunity to have fun while learning, and with these tips, you won’t even have to convince your children to put on their thinking caps. EXPLORE THE WORLD OF PHYSICS ON A KAYAK.

STEM AT THE LAKE

Many families flock to the lakes of Oklahoma for all-season fishing, boating and nature. During the warmer months, playing in the water, making sandcastles or collecting pebbles are not only time-honored family activities but great opportunities to learn.

WESTERN OKLAHOMA Head out to Foss Lake in western Oklahoma for one of the state’s sandiest beaches. Located near the town of Foss, this lake boasts more than 60 miles of shoreline, making it the largest lake in the area. Foss Lake is a perfect destination to take advantage of the summer heat but is also a delight in the spring and fall. Take a magnifying glass in your lake bag to explore the astounding beauty of sand. Made up of eroded rock, minerals and shells, sand is different everywhere. Sand on one side of the beach is unlike the sand on the opposite side. Ask your children what they see in the sand and why they think different pieces are unique.

ENJOY ONE OF OKLAHOMA’S BEST BEACHES AT FOSS LAKE.

12 METROFAMILYMAGAZINE.COM / EVERYTHING GUIDE 2020-2021

CENTRAL OKLAHOMA Take advantage of a windy day to visit Arcadia Lake in Edmond. Learn how wind can make a lake a wild and rough environment, then create your own beach in a bottle. Grab any plastic bottle for this fun activity and then collect materials like sand, water, small rocks and lake plants. Let your little explorers shake the bottle to see what happens to the items within their turbulent lake. Arcadia Lake also offers kayak rentals throughout the year so throw on your life jacket and explore the world of physics by propelling your kayak through the water. Ask your little scientist how she or he thinks the paddles help move the boat. Experiment with deep strokes and shallow strokes and compare each with your speed. Play around with balance by rocking the kayak (just don’t tip over!). Arcadia Lake has a park entry fee of $6 per car on weekdays and $7 per car on weekends, covering up to five people in each car. Kids under the age of 13 must have a life jacket on while in the water.

SWIM LESSONS Two years in a row!

FIND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AND INDOOR NATURALIST PROGRAMS AT LAKE EUFAULA.

Mix 1/2 cup of white glue and 1/2 cup of water in a bowl. Add 1 cup of sand. After mixing the sand, add 1/4 cup of liquid starch and stir. When it’s mixed well, add in another 1/4 cup of liquid starch. Let the gooey mixture sit for about 10 minutes, and then have fun playing with the moldable slime. Talk about how glue contains polymers that cause a reaction with the starch called crosslinking. The polymer molecules stick to each other and form a slime-like consistency when cross-linked with starch.

EASTERN OKLAHOMA Lake Eufaula in eastern Oklahoma has plethora of sand on its beaches, making it the perfect warm weather destination for this next experiment. Satisfy your children’s “ick” factor by making sand slime, which also makes a cool gift for your kids to take home to friends.

Return to Lake Eufaula in the fall for naturalist programs and activities open to adults and children to learn about the natural world and wildlife living in the area. A winter fishing trip mixes biology with fun. Talk about what kinds of fish are native to Oklahoma, and use your bait as a good example of how big fish eat little fish to survive. Cleaning fish can become a lesson on anatomy by pointing out fins, organs and gills.

STEM HIKING The best thing about nature is that STEM is built in, a science incubator if you will. Simple hikes can teach little ones about math, physics, engineering and more. If hiking at Lake Thunderbird in Norman in the winter months, try tossing different sized rocks into the water and talk about why bigger rocks make bigger splashes. Place some sticks across a creek to show how fallen logs make natural bridges for animals or bugs. Lake Thunderbird State Park’s Discovery Cove Nature Center is a perfect place to visit when the weather is chilly. Open five days a week, this center houses displays of native animals, local snakes and historic artifacts. Kids will also learn how to track animals, cook in a Dutch oven and fish through scheduled programming. Learn about the power of the sun by collecting both dry and fresh leaves at the Great Salt Plains National State Park in northwest Oklahoma. Place a leaf in a safe area like a fire pit or sidewalk and use a magnifying glass to concentrate the light of the sun into a tiny point. Watch in amazement when smoke appears as the sun’s energy burns a hole in the leaf. Talk about why certain leaves burn more easily and how dangerous forest fires can be. Warn your kids that broken glass and water bottles can start forest fires through this experiment.

Moving Day – Western Luggage

August 1 • 10:00 a.m. – Noon The history of the West tells the stories of people’s movement. From nomadic Native American tribes, to explorers like Lewis and Clark, to settlers moving West in wagons, they all needed something to carry their belongings. Pack a wagon like a settler, assemble a no-sew leather pouch of your own, experiment with Native American travois and enjoy storytime. Free for members or with Museum admission. All activities available while supplies last.

DIG FOR SELENITE CRYSTALS AT THE GREAT SALT PLAINS NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE.

The Great Salt Plains Wildlife Refuge is the only place in the world where selenite crystals form with an hourglass of sand inside. The salt plains were once a prehistoric ocean, and your family can dig for these crystals from April through October. Bring supplies like a bucket, shovels and plenty of sunscreen and water if you visit during the summer. Keep your eyes open for more than 300 species of birds that call the Great Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge home.

Take advantage of the milder temperatures of spring and fall with a journey to Roman Nose State Park in Watonga. Bring a journal on your hike to record the number and types of wildlife you see. Mornings and right before dusk are prime times to view deer, hunt for coyote tracks or spot rabbits. If you are hiking in the summer, beware of rattlesnakes and discuss why some snakes are poisonous while others are not. Map out your hiking route using a run tracker on your smartphone to learn how trails are built and how GPS technology works. The Three Springs Trail at Roman Nose is a familyfriendly hike leading past a waterfall fed by natural springs, into shady forest areas and over a small bridge. While you cross the bridge, inspect it to discover what makes the bridge stable and how the structure was built into the natural environment.

STEM ON THE ROAD Whether you are driving to grandma’s house down the road or across the state, every road trip can become a learning experience. Instead of plugging bored kids into the DVD player, try these tips from the Tulsa STEM Alliance. Before pumping gas to explore Lake Murray State Park just south of Ardmore, ask your child to predict how many gallons of gasoline it will take to fill up the tank. Lake Murray is open year round, so visit the trails in the winter and again in the summer to see how the natural world looks different. Take kayaks out to explore how the water acts in cold versus warm weather.

AMUSEMENT STEM Watching or riding a roller coaster at Frontier City fires up the imagination. Open from April to October with special holiday events for Halloween and Christmas, the park is full of STEM fun. Talk about how roller coasters travel faster on a downhill slope and research how the rollercoaster cars stay on the track. Demonstrate centripetal force by having your child swing a bucket of water in a circle to observe that water does not splash out even when directly overhead. Then take a ride on Frontier City’s Tina’s Tea Cup Twirl to feel the force in action. Even walking from ride to ride can be educational. Using your smartphone, track your steps around the park to engage in math exercises to determine how far you walked, how many steps equal a mile, convert miles to kilometers or calculate miles per hour.

Instead of driving, squeeze in an engineering study by taking the Heartland Flyer Amtrak train to Ardmore, located just minutes north of Lake Murray. Bring along a book about the history of trains. Pay attention to which direction you’re traveling when you are driving. If you’re headed to Weatherford to visit the Stafford Air & Space Museum, ask your kids how they can tell if you’re going north, south, east or west. Pass around a compass to your passengers to demonstrate. Bio-index your trip by counting how many animals and birds you see while driving to Woolaroc in Bartlesville. Woolaroc was the ranch of oil baron Frank E. Phillips, and the museum and wildlife area is full of historic artifacts that helped shape the west. As you travel, take note of areas where you see the most of each animal and ponder together why. No matter where your road trip takes you, entertain your passengers with a box of marbles. Ask your kids to take note of which direction the marbles roll as you speed up, slow down, stop or turn.

BACKYARD STEM If your spring or fall break is a staycation, explore the amazing science in your own backyard. Slip in some engineering by having your children build stick forts, create a dam, build a bird’s nest or even dig a hole that doesn’t collapse in. Learn about biology through planting a garden, collecting insects, inspecting and pulling weeds or counting birds in the backyard. Create a nature mandala by collecting leaves, flowers, sticks and pebbles. Place your nature items in a pile and arrange them in pictures and patterns. See if you can create a fish or a tree using the items collected. Try building a stone maze out of rocks in the yard. In the summer months, talk about why some items float in a pool while others sink. While searching for bugs, talk about camouflage and watch how insects adapt their colors and shapes to their environment.

Whatever your vacation entails, the opportunity to add fun learning experiences is endless. Your children’s passion for exploration can be the perfect gateway into STEM family fun. METROFAMILYMAGAZINE.COM / EVERYTHING GUIDE 2020-2021

Super Kids

of the Metro

Kid Biz Whizzes: Local kid-preneurs succeed in sales, service BY ERIN PAGE. PHOTOS PROVIDED.

While some kids spend their school breaks and summer vacations playing video games, exploring the outdoors or catching up on sleep, others prioritize organizing product inventory, learning marketing strategies and ringing up sales. The next generation of Oklahoma business owners is coming in strong, with an eye for profit-making and hearts for giving back. Serenity, Malachi and Sophie share how their respective businesses launched, what they’ve learned and their plans for the future.

Serenity Jade

Owner: Serenity, age 11 Product: Beaded bracelets with messages of positivity Serenity will be in the seventh grade at Deer Creek Middle School this fall, a time in many kids’ lives when they are plagued by feelings of inadequacy and awkwardness. Not so for this confident, affirmative tween, who has built a business based on helping others see the best in themselves and the world around them. Spreading positivity, one bead a time, is Serenity’s mission, and mom Chasity says her daughter’s determination, thoughtfulness and sincerity in seeking to help those around her make her incredibly proud.

Why has it been so important for you to focus your business on positivity? Serenity: I feel like there is too much hate and bullying, and people don’t understand how much it affects people. It’s not right, so I want to spread positivity. I’ve learned that being positive makes me feel better about myself, and I want to inspire others to be happy. I put my creativity and the power of positivity together, and Serenity Jade became a business.

With negative self-talk so common among kids and adults alike, what advice do you have for other kids your age to think positively? Serenity: I’d tell them to think about how they were put on this earth for a reason. They were made the way God wanted them to be. Everyone has a purpose in life; they are unique and they don’t have to be like everyone else.

16 METROFAMILYMAGAZINE.COM / EVERYTHING GUIDE 2020-2021

What have you learned by starting a business? Serenity: I’ve learned how to set up a website. And I’ve learned that I have to trust the process, that I won’t be successful right away but not to give up. I’ve learned to be more confident in myself.

What’s been the most fun? Serenity: The most fun part is making the bracelets and thinking of the words to put on them. It’s fun to think about inspiring others and making a difference.

What advice do you have for other kids wanting to start a business? Serenity: Be confident in yourself and be positive in everything you do. Believe in yourself and trust the process.

What are you most proud of about your business and yourself in being an entrepreneur? Serenity: I’m proud that my bracelets are handmade and that I’m making a difference, not just selling a product.

What’s next for Serenity Jade? Serenity: I want to get a bigger inventory, and I want to do birthday parties where I bring the beads and make bracelets with people.

Malachi’s Workshop Owner: Malachi, age 10 Product: Bluebird houses

Malachi was unsure about launching a business on his own, so he enlisted the help of older brother Elijah and Malachi’s Workshop was born. Malachi is the ringleader with Elijah offering quiet encouragement and confidence-bolstering advice to his younger brother. Now Malachi is stepping out to run the business on his own, assured in his in his abilities both to build and sell. Malachi’s business was inspired by his grandfather, who builds birdhouses with all his grandchildren. That experience ignited a spark in the kid entrepreneur, who offers both ready-made birdhouses and kits for buyers to build the houses themselves. Malachi’s mom Trish says when his homeschool work is done, her son immediately rushes to tinker with building or engineering activities. She’s been especially proud to watch her once-shy son thrive as a confident business owner who prioritizes giving back, giving a portion of profits to a nonprofit.

Why has it been important to you to donate a portion of your profits? Malachi: Compassion International helps kids around the world get out of poverty, get an education, go to church, get meals and medical help. I feel like we need to be helping those people that need to get out of poverty. My mom has sponsored a child since she was 16, and then I started sponsoring a child who [shares] my birthday. He is from Ghana. We send him letters and he sends us letters back.

What has been the hardest part about owning a business? Malachi: Getting the products done in a timely manner can be a challenge.

What have you learned by starting a business? Malachi: I have learned a lot about birds and how to make the birdhouses, like if you put a perch on the house, blue jays can perch there and eat [the bluebirds’] eggs. At my first business fair I was nervous to talk to people when they came up to our table, but my brother helped me and encouraged me, and now I’m more confident.

What’s been the most fun? Malachi: Bossing people around, especially my brother! I like doing stuff with my hands and I always have. I want to be a carpenter one day.

What advice do you have for other kids wanting to start a business? Malachi: Dress nicely and present yourself well to people and they will take you more seriously. Take notes and learn from other people in the same [industry].

What are you proudest of about your business and yourself in being an entrepreneur? Malachi: It feels good to accomplish something and to know that I’ve done something to help people around the world when I sell my birdhouses.

What’s next for Malachi’s Workshop? Malachi: I’m making bat houses and stove top covers, starting to do cutting boards and really anything I can make with wood.

Fifi

Owner: Sophia, age 11 Products: Origami crane earrings, knitted animals, molded crayons

Sophia, whose nickname is Fifi, built her business of the same name around her artistic expression. Though her initial focus was on origami crane earrings, for which she won a 2019 Oklahoma State Fair blue ribbon, she’s continued to expand and grow her business with new product offerings. The creative tween will be in sixth grade at Summit Middle School in Edmond, where she gives a portion of her proceeds to the Kindness Club, founded by a friend who passed away. Sophia’s close-knit family enjoys both creating and serving their community together, Sophia’s mom Lingchu laughingly recalling a toilet paper pendant necklace made as a tribute to the family’s COVID-19 quarantine. The pandemic also prompted Sophia’s latest commitment to donate to OU Children’s Hospital through Fifi.

What’s been your favorite product to make? Sophia: My crane earrings. I saw the earrings in the Oklahoma City Museum of Art and just followed the design of the crane. They are all different sizes and no crane is the same.

What’s so special to you about origami?

What’s been the most fun? Sophia: The best part is creating new things.

What advice do you have for other kids wanting to start a business? Sophia: Figure out what your merchandise is going to be, then figure out an allowance for getting supplies and then how much they are going to cost [to sell].

What are you proudest of about your business and yourself in being an entrepreneur? Sophia: I’m proud of myself for stepping into the light. I’m not a big people person and I don’t even know the people who are coming up to buy things [at craft fairs]. I think I’m more confident. I’m proud that I make my products by hand.

What’s next for Fifi? Sophia: At first I just had crane earrings, then I started making molded crayons and now I am starting to do string art and getting into carpentry. I’m thinking about setting up a website, too.

At the Y, our facilities are clean and safe for all ages. We offer affordable memberships and financial assistance to ensure all of our friends and neighbors can enjoy what we have to offer. We’re also a non-profit community benefit organization. Through the help of generous donors and partners, we operate feeding sites, facilitate a mentorship program for teens, provide financial assistance, address community needs in times of crisis and so much more.

Sophia: It’s like I am at peace when I am making it. Each little crane becomes part of someone or something bigger.

Epic Charter Schools 405.749.4550 1900 NW Expy Floor R3, OKC, OK 73118 Epiccharterschools.org It all started with a simple idea – that school can be different. Ten years and nearly 34,000 students later, EPIC Charter Schools has grown to be Oklahoma’s largest virtual public charter school and the state’s third-largest public school system.

instruct and support their students’ learning. Before the pandemic, teachers met regularly in person with their students, as well as used video conferencing tools like Zoom, Google Hangout, Skype or FaceTime for daily face-to-face interaction. This fall, families have the option of resuming in-person meetings, or exclusively using video conferencing for teacher instruction.

EPIC Superintendent Bart Banfield said the unprecedented growth is the result of students and families having another option.

“EPIC is uniquely prepared to handle an influx of families due to the pandemic,”Banfield said, adding that all students are given free technology and/or connectivity if they need it. “We look forward to demonstrating to a record number of students this fall that school can indeed be different whether they are with us for a short time or remain with us through graduation.”

“One thing we know about education is that one size most certainly does not fit all,” Banfield said. “A great many of our students come to EPIC because a traditional classroom setting wasn’t the right setting for them.”

EPIC is the state’s third-largest public school system. It anticipates serving approximately 40,000 students statewide in the 2020-2021 school year and employing more than 1,700 educators and administrators across Oklahoma.

Banfield said school safety issues (like bullying), commitment to sports or other competitive extracurricular activities and different learning styles are some of the many reasons some families have found their way to EPIC. Now, with a global pandemic, some families are being drawn to EPIC for fear of returning to a traditional school setting for the foreseeable future. Free, fully accredited and offering instruction for grades Pre-K through 12, EPIC teachers’ average student roster size is just 28 students, allowing them to daily interact,

Keystone Adventure School and Farm Keystone Focuses on Individualizing Education, Regardless of Learning Venue For sixteen years, Keystone Adventure School and Farm, an accredited preschool and elementary school in Edmond, has been welcoming students to a safe, inclusive learning environment full of the wonder of childhood. When COVID-19 shuttered schools across the nation, Keystone pivoted to offering live online classes and experiences in pasture, art, music, and more. Teachers met one-on-one with students and in small groups. “Our goal was to make sure that the relationships between teachers and students stayed strong, and that the students would not experience a gap in their learning,” said Jenny Dunning, Keystone co-founder and co-director. To prepare for the challenges of the upcoming year, Keystone assembled a Task Force of experts to partner with the Board of Directors in making decisions specific to the Keystone community. They created a scientific metric for determining whether school would be fully on campus, a hybrid model of 2-3 days a week on campus, or in a virtual learning scenario.

“It’s important to note that, regardless of whether we are on campus or online, none of our commitments to the mission or philosophy of Keystone have changed,” said John Duhon, co-founder and co-director. “We will continue to attend to each child’s social, emotional, physical, and academic health in a way that is best for them.” One way to attend to emotional health? “Infuse some fun!” Dunning said. “Keystone will launch a space theme this fall as our kids explore the unknown on the Starship Keystone.” Keystone also plans to utilize its 15-acre campus, creating shaded outdoor classrooms that allow for mask-free social distancing. Even in a virtual learning scenario, Keystone plans to open up the campus to small groups of students for outdoor-only activities, like caring for pasture animals, physical education, and art. More information about Keystone is available on their website at: www.keystoneadventureschoolandfarm.com or by calling 405-216-5400.

REAL MOMS OF THE METRO

Moms Dish On metro eats, swag & fun

When it comes to planning family fun, seeking new swag at locally-owned shops and trying the best in OKC eats, metro moms are always our best resource. The events of 2020 have made it even more important to support local businesses and restaurants, and these families were eager to share how they’ve done just that. Check out these local moms’ favorites.

Northeast OKC: Whitaker family

While being quarantined at home, I found myself needing a break from preparing meals and ordering the usual takeout. Through casual conversation, I found a new favorite locally-owned restaurant: Papa Dino’s Pizza & Grill. It is simply amazing! Through this pandemic, I’ve also had to re-learn how much fun it is to simply be outside. Looking at smart devices and watching television gets old … fast! Riding my bike was something I took for granted. So much so, I couldn’t even tell you the location of my own bike, so I have borrowed my mom’s bike in order to enjoy the cool breeze on a warm day. I love getting outside with my son and enjoying Mother Nature while nibbling on Papa Dino’s! Jillian Whitaker is mom of Janori (2) and a news reporter and founder of Better Black News.

Midtown & Uptown: Lawrence family

As a small-business family living in the heart of Oklahoma City, we LOVE to champion other local businesses in the community. Our very favorite thing about OKC is the small neighborhood vibe right in the middle of a big thriving city, and the options for families are extensive. One of our favorite neighbors and local businesses that we love to support is Commonplace Bookstore in Midtown, which hosts our favorite Storytime for Littles every Saturday morning. Sweet Yield Studio on Film Row is where both of our babies (and their momma) take ballet, hiphop and creativity classes. We love Theatre Camp at Oklahoma Children’s Theatre at Oklahoma City University, and our kids have created some incredibly cool things during art camp at Oklahoma Contemporary (we can’t wait to see the new location!)

THE LAWRENCE FAMILY TAKES IN AN OKC DODGERS GAME LAST SUMMER.

We love biking at beautiful Scissortail Park and cheering for our home team at OKC Dodgers games (we can’t wait for baseball to be back). Our favorite local eats are Plant in Midtown (healthy and delicious!), PlayCafe on 23rd (super cool concept!) and Tuckers Onion Burgers or Pizzeria Gusto in Uptown. Oklahoma City does community well and we’re so thankful to be a part of it. Erin and Justin Lawrence are parents of Jackson (6) and Charlie (4) and live in Mesta Park. They own Oklahoma Shirt Company.

Asian & Plaza Districts: Arrendondo family

One of our favorite places to visit as a family is right in the heart of OKC … Cafe Kacao! We absolutely love their Guatemalan and Latin cuisine dishes. They offer unique and delicious flavors in their menu, full of heritage and culture. Located off 33rd and Classen in the Asian District, we’ve been happy to support them through COVID-19 as they have been open for curbside and pick-up orders and their customer service is still one of the best! Another local area we love to support as a family is the Plaza District. We love to visit The Mule to dine outside on their patio. Then, we like to hop over to grab some ice cream from Roxy’s Ice Cream Social. Gardenia and Diego Arredondo are parents of Alayna (11), Diego Jr. (5) and Gianluca (1). Gardenia is a lead teacher at Special Care.

Central OKC:

Shahan family Our family adores being outdoors, which has been extra convenient throughout this time of social distancing. Our favorite is Scissortail Park, where we stop by the food trucks to get a snack or drink, then let the kids run around the fenced in and truly unique playground area. Very nearby is Myriad Botanical Gardens, which is not only beautiful (perfect low-key family photo opps!), but they always have fun family activities. Our favorite is Pumpkinville in the fall. Plus, there’s a carousel, so that’s always a win! When we aren’t roaming around outside, we love museums. Our favorites are Sam Noble Museum of Natural History, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and Science Museum Oklahoma.

MYRIAD GARDENS IS A SHAHAN FAMILY FAVORITE.

We love finding restaurants where our kids can be kids and we get to enjoy delicious food. Ingrid’s Kitchen provides fantastic German cuisine, delicious pastries and if you’re lucky you’ll catch the live polka music (so fun!) The Jones Assembly offers great options for cocktails, appetizers and desserts and a patio with live music, making it a unique environment for fine dining with a laidback atmosphere to enjoy dinner as a family. Aly and Adam Shahan are parents of Micah (9) and Peyton (6). Aly is associate director of the Wesley Foundation campus ministry at Oklahoma State University.

Piedmont: Hopkins family Piedmont is located in such a quaint district but it’s also an up-andcoming city growing at a rapid rate with impressive Blue Ribbon Schools. Our Piedmont family loves the savory tastes of Sharp’s, a hometown BBQ classic located in the heart of the business district. Just nearby, A Latte Love has grown into a brick and mortar coffee shop after originating inside a food truck. Most recently, Big Buns Bakery and Blast Nutrition (a shake/tea shop) have opened in our community. For a little shopping, travel down the road to find the historic Old Store, which is open to vendors and antique lovers state wide. Plus, there is a wide variety of local boutiques to assist you with all of your shopping needs, including Mirror Mirror, Wild Rose and the Trendy Sister to name a few. Robyn and Courtney Hopkins are parents of Linden (5), Lennox (4), Zayne (19 months) and Luxe (6 months). Robyn is owner and managing attorney of Hopkins Law and Associates, P.C. and Courtney, MSN, is a registered nurse.

THE LATIMERS LOVE VICTORIA’S PASTA SHOP IN NORMAN.

Latimer family As a commuter (pre-COVID), I get to enjoy the best of both worlds — all the Oklahoma City entertainment, food and shops and the perks of living in a college town. Norman is home to my favorite locally-owned restaurant, Victoria’s Pasta Shop. My husband and I have been patrons since our undergrad college days, and I swear the food and drinks have only gotten better with time. Victoria’s has been around for more than 30 years, and their commitment to quality and community will keep us coming back for family gatherings and date nights for 30 more. Norman:

Porter family It’s a given to think about Norman and the University of Oklahoma. But rest assured, there is a lot more to the town we’ve called home for more than 20 years. When our daughter was younger, we were regulars at the Sam Noble Museum, Gymboree, the library and Duck Pond. Now that our daughter is a teenager, we enjoy Campus Corner across the street from OU’s campus. Lucca, Blush and Savvy have trendy, youthful clothes, and we always stop into Pepe Delgado’s for authentic southern Mexican fare where everything is made fresh daily. Apple Tree Chocolate has caramel apples and loads of chocolate treats if we have room for a goodie. And, rounding out the day with a stop at Joe’s Nails is the perfect way to enjoy our hometown — together. Renee and Chris Porter are parents to Ellie (15). Renee is co-founder of Scissortail Community Development Corporation. THE PORTERS ENJOY CAMPUS CORNER IN NORMAN.

Grandtravel ADVENTURES ACROSS OKLAHOMA

When our first grandchild was a few years old, the realization hit me that I have the opportunity to experience a myriad of kid-friendly activities with the infusion of child-like wonder and curiosity. Visiting the OKC Zoo and Martin Park Nature Center, making sugar cookies with extra icing and sprinkles and keeping up a running commentary on cows and fire hydrants outside our car windows all have new

Historic Fort Reno For history buffs and older children enchanted with Native American and military history, Historic Fort Reno is a treasure trove. My husband Bob and I had visited with friends and family members previously but wanted to share the experience with our grandchildren, who were intrigued by the promise of learning more about war and weaponry! Located 4 miles west of El Reno, the sprawling historic site offers windswept views for miles, and one can almost imagine the desolation of this 1874 outpost established as a military camp during the Indian Wars. During the hour-long drive, we shared a bit about the history of Fort Reno with our grandchildren, where Buffalo soldiers and Cavalry and Infantry units of the United States Army were stationed from 1875 to 1907. The fort also played a significant role in the 1889 and 1892 Oklahoma Land Runs and served as an internment work camp for German and Italian POWs during World War II. Pawpaw did his best to explain the concept of prisoners of war to our grandkids, and shared that so many of these prisoners, after being forced to return to their home countries after the war, ended up returning to America with their families to enjoy their freedom living in a new land. Young and older legs alike will enjoy a stretch walking the grounds. Some buildings can be entered and toured, while others admired from outside. On our visit, Fort Reno’s director and museum curator Wendy Ogden, who’s been involved with the fort since she was a child, started our tour in the Fort Reno Visitor Center and Museum, the former home of the head veterinarian at the fort.

meaning with my favorite tiny traveling companions. As our grandchildren have gotten older, now 8, 6 and 4, we’ve begun to expand our travels around the city and state. Following are a trio of primarily outdoor adventures, which, in our experience, prove delightful for all generations and are perfect for times of social distancing and beyond. BY DEBBI MARSHALL. PHOTOS PROVIDED.

WENDY OGDEN PORTRAYS MOKA, WIFE OF FAMED CAVALRY SCOUT BEN CLARK, ON A HISTORIC FORT RENO TOUR.

The children enjoyed learning about the fort’s history as a remount station from 1908 through 1947, providing horses and mules for all branches of the military, and examined the various saddles on display with interest. The famous riderless horse Black Jack trained at Fort Reno and is a familiar image to those recalling President Kennedy’s funeral procession. We also heard tales of visits to the fort by Amelia Earhart and Will Rogers. The kids found the touchable historic items like the metal drinking cup dented by a bullet that saved a soldier’s life and the antique polo stick fun to examine, a reminder that learning through touch is vital for little ones. Ogden shared the history of the fort’s attempts to both protect and westernize the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes, which at times resulted in battles and loss of life. Passionate about educating the public through historical interpretation and making events come alive

for all generations, Ogden portrayed and taught us about Moka, wife of famed cavalry scout Ben Clark, both of whom are buried at Fort Reno Cemetery. We walked by the small former home of Clark and Moka and contemplated how they lived there with their 11 children! Other highlights included a walk by the chapel built by German POWs and a look at the commissary with a brick inscribed by “Buffalo Bill” Cody. The U.S. Calvary Museum is also located onsite. The children were intrigued by the Fort Reno Cemetery, the resting place of military families stationed at Fort Reno as well as European POWs from Texas and Oklahoma, where Pawpaw explained the coins left on headstones were placed there out of gratitude for their service by visitors or fellow soldiers. Fort Reno hosts Tombstone Tales in the fall and spring where costumed historians

portray persons buried there in the candlelit cemetery. The annual Firing of the Christmas Guns in early December kicks off the Christmas season with German folk tales and a vintage Santa. The historic site is open for tours Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children 4 and under are free; ages 5-17, $4; adults, $6; and military and seniors, $5. (7107 W Cheyenne St., El Reno; fortreno.org) Before or after a visit to Fort Reno, swing by Sid’s Diner in El Reno for a burger, coney with slaw and a myriad of creamy shakes and malts. My favorite is the orange shake, which reminds me of a creamy Dreamsicle, while Pawpaw and the kids preferred the more modern Oreo option. Acclaimed by several food network reviewers, Sid’s offers seating inside and out as well as online to-go orders. (300 S Choctaw, El Reno; sidsdinerelreno.com)

VARIED PLAY SPACES AND VIGNETTES THROUGHOUT OSU’S BOTANIC GARDEN OFFER MUCH TO EXPLORE.

The Oklahoma State University Botanic Garden While our usual destination when we visit Stillwater is a football or basketball game (Go Cowboys!), the Botanic Garden at OSU has emerged as a new favorite stop. Tucked away off Highway 51, this 100-acre secret garden offers meandering walking trails (which are wide and stroller-friendly) and an abundance of open, shady areas for picnicking, playing games and just running wild. Both my master gardener and grandma instincts lead me to spend time in nature with my three wild wonders, pointing out plants, flowers and insects and listening with care as they discover the great outdoors. Botanic Garden volunteer director Laura Payne emphasizes the ever-growing importance of connecting children with nature, describing the garden as “more like a living museum than a park.” She goes on to reflect: “If kids sit back and quietly watch, they may observe [non-poisonous] snakes, frogs and lizards crawling through the gardens.”

Vignettes throughout the gardens offered my grandchildren a variety of places and plants to examine. The children’s play area features an inviting playhouse and tree swing nestled in the shade. Bluebird houses with squawking mama birds and containers of a variety of herbs to smell gave us pause and prompted conversation. New to the gardens and encouraging creative play is the Tree Walk Village, highlighted by a swinging rope bridge. Our grandchildren were fascinated with the chicken moat, watching colorful, clucking hens scampering about within an enclosed area. The kids were intrigued to learn the chickens’ waste provides nitrogen-rich fertilizer for the gardens! The spring and summer months boast beautiful floral displays while fall highlights the best of foliage as the trees turn every hue of red, orange and yellow.

94 METROFAMILYMAGAZINE.COM / EVERYTHING GUIDE 2020-2021

The Botanic Garden is host to countless free and seasonal events, including an herb festival, yoga in the gardens, Friday night concerts and open houses. On the first and third Saturdays of the month, from 10 a.m. to noon, children can enjoy varied activities in the Model Train Garden, which features a running train. The last Saturday in September is typically reserved for the mum sale and garden fest. Social distancing and wearing masks are encouraged. (3300 W 6th St, Stillwater; botanicgarden.okstate.edu) While in Stillwater, a trip to the original Hideaway Pizza or a stop for cheese fries at Eskimo Joe’s is always in order! Other favorite attractions for grandparents and grandkids to enjoy together are the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (405 W Hall of Fame, Stillwater; nwhof.org) and Lost Creek Safari (1200 W 8th St; lostcreeksafari.com), an exotic animal park.

HIKING, FISHING AND WATER RECREATION MAKE FOR MULTIGENERATIONAL FUN AT CHICKASAW NATIONAL RECREATION AREA. PHOTOS BY NATIONAL PARK SERVICE.

Chickasaw National Recreation Area Another outdoor Oklahoma oasis perfect for multiple generations is the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, located 90 minutes south of the metro. Grandparents may recall the park’s original name was Platt National Park with the distinction of being the seventh national park in the United States. In the 1970s the park merged with the Arbuckle Recreation Area, adopting its current name.

live reptiles, amphibians and birds of prey. Ranger-led programs are presented daily during the summer, and those interested in the Junior Ranger Program can pick up information there. Designed for kids of all ages to learn about the park through games, activities and puzzles, the program requires attending a ranger-led program, hiking a park trail and completing activity pages.

The area is an ecotone, or meeting place of two different ecosystems. The eastern deciduous forest and the mixed-grass prairie overlap, providing diversity for hikers and nature lovers. The hiking trails vary from very easy to moderate so visitors can choose their level of adventure. Don’t miss the easy 1.2 mile round-trip trail to Little Niagara, with the reward of a beautiful waterfall view. If the weather is hot, a swim here or in Antelope or Buffalo Springs nearby adds even more fun to the trip.

We have recently introduced our grandkids to fishing, and fishing docks at the Lake of Arbuckles are available for this shared activity, which does require a current Oklahoma fishing license. In the summer months, a cool dip in the lake is a welcome refresher.

Stop by the Travertine Nature Center to learn more about the diversity of plant and animal life in the park, examine exhibits and meet

For a full outdoor vacation experience, campgrounds are available in the park by reservation. The park is open 24 hours a day and no admission fees are charged for park entry. Social distancing is currently encouraged in the park and some areas may be closed due to COVID-19. Megan Wilkins, public information officer, offers the helpful

tip of visiting during the weekdays to take advantage of lower park attendance. (901 W 1st St, Sulphur; nps.gov/chic/index.htm) Other unique adventures to add to your visit to Chickasaw Country include the Chickasaw Cultural Center (867 Cooper Memorial Dr, Sulphur; chickasawculturalcenter.com); highflying fun with 777 Zipline (6250 Highway 77 S, Davis; turnerfallszip.com); and a visit to Bedre Fine Chocolates (37 N Colbert Rd, Davis; bedrechocolates.com) to watch sweet treats being made (and buy some for the car ride home!) in Davis. NOTE: Be sure to contact these entities before attending due to possible pandemic closures. For me, experiences with my grandchildren are lasting treasures. “Grand-travel” provides recreational opportunities for grandparents and grandchildren to deepen relationships, see the world through a fresh lens and entertain others with funny stories. Joy may be found in the journey, regardless of the destination.
