Slide into Winter Reading with Hot Reads and Cool Prizes By Zoe Elrod, Internal Communications Coordinator
If you’re looking to cozy up with a good book this winter, the Metropolitan Library System has just the thing to kickstart your reading goals. Running from Jan. 1 through Feb. 28, the annual Book Bingo Winter Reading Challenge invites adults to complete a bingo card filled with unique reading categories. Winter Reading is more than just a chance to win prizes—it’s a beloved tradition that brings the community together. And it’s not just books that count toward your reading goal. Whether you’re enjoying audiobooks, magazines, bedtime stories or novels, Book Bingo offers a fun way to discover new reads, revisit old favorites, and reap the many benefits of reading. "All kinds of reading counts for this challenge,” said Emily Williams, teen services manager. “Audiobooks provide just as much vocabulary and reading comprehension as the paper versions. E-books are a convenient way to carry about dozens of books at once, plus the library’s downloadable collection is just a Wi-Fi signal away." For many, this cherished tradition is the highlight of the season, with readers eagerly anticipating the reveal of this year’s collectible mug design and diving into the challenge. But it’s about more than just the prizes—it’s a yearly reminder of the benefits of reading, like reduced stress. Incorporating audiobooks into your routine can make activities like walking, running, cooking or yard work more enjoyable while keeping your mind engaged. Meanwhile, reading physical books offers a much-needed screen break and can even help improve your sleep. “Reading can help us process our experiences, receive reinforcement for our feelings, or provide a distraction from everyday stressors,” Williams said.
How to Play Winter Reading Book Bingo 1. Get Your Card: Pick up a bingo card at any Metro Library location or download one online at metrolibrary.org/winterreading. Each square features a fun category, like “a book with a number in the title” or “a book set in the winter.” 2. Track Your Progress: Write the title and author in the corresponding square. Complete any five squares for

a bingo or challenge yourself to fill in all 25. The book categories are suggestions to inspire your reading, but you’re welcome to log any books. You can also track your progress on the Beanstack app. 3. Submit Your Card: Return completed cards in person or log your progress online by Feb. 28. Participants can submit one card to qualify for prizes. 4. Prizes and Perks: Read five books to earn a librarybranded campfire mug (while supplies last) and enter a drawing for prizes like Apple AirPods. Complete 25 books for a chance at the grand prize, which includes an iPad, VIP Literary Voices tickets featuring Jodi Picoult and a YMCA membership. Buffalo Dreamer Violet Duncan
JFICTION DUN
Available formats: Book, eAudiobook, eBook, Kindle "Buffalo Dreamer" by Violet Duncan is a poignant narrative crafted for readers aged ten to twelve. This short book serves as a touching tribute to both the survivors and those left behind during the era when Indigenous children were forcibly placed in residential schools by the Canadian government. The story follows Summer, a young Cree girl, who visits her grandparents on a Cree reservation. There, she begins to experience vivid dreams about a girl her age fleeing from mistreatment at a 1960s residential school. Alongside her cousin Autumn, Summer delves into their family history and helps heal a broken community. Duncan’s prose is approachable and breaks down the historical context of residential schools in a way that neither diminishes their long-reaching impact on Indigenous communities, nor becomes too graphic for younger readers. I teared up more than a few times, particularly in the final act. I would recommend “Buffalo Dreamer” to any reader, young or old, who is in the mood for historical fiction with a timely message. reviewed by: Annika Lewis Annika Lewis is a librarian at the Downtown Ronald J. Norick Library. Her favorite genres are urban fantasy and science fiction. In her spare time, she runs tabletop RPGs for her friends, takes her cats for walks and paints historical & fantasy portraits. 8

A LEGACY OF
Learning
By Lisa Bradley, Special Collections Librarian
In July of 1965, the libraries in Oklahoma County joined to form the Oklahoma County Library System after a vote of the people. Changing our name to Metropolitan Library System in 1977, our library system celebrates our 60th anniversary this year. Bethany Library opened on January 31, 1965 – 60 years of serving the Bethany community. Midwest City Library opened 70 years ago on March 7, 1955. Originally, the library was housed in a renovated city garage in Atkinson Plaza across from Tinker AFB. The oldest library still operating out of its original building, the Wright Library, opened on September 15, 1925— nearly 100 years ago.

Behind the Stacks: All About Library Aides By Zoe Elrod, Internal Communications Coordinator
Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at your library? While librarians manage big-picture projects, library aides also keep everything running smoothly.
What Do Library Aides Do? Library aides typically assist guests, shelve books, process materials and maintain an organized library. Their duties include: • • • •
Helping guests find materials and services. Sorting, shelving and organizing resources. Checking out and in materials, handling fines and managing accounts. Supporting library displays and setting up rooms.
Aides also assist with technology and promote library programs, ensuring smooth daily operations. Jim Nimmo has proudly served as a Library Aide for 31 years, a testament to his dedication and passion for the role. He enjoys many aspects of his job, but he especially emphasizes the library’s welcoming environment. While library aides are responsible for sorting and shelving books, he emphasized that guests should never hesitate to take a book off the shelf to browse. Guests are encouraged to explore freely, leaving 14

Nimmo enjoys the orderliness of his job—returning items to their proper places—and finds satisfaction in helping make the library a welcoming space. He values the library as an open space for rest and reflection and takes pride in fostering an inviting atmosphere where people from all backgrounds can gather, read and connect. His goal is to ensure every guest’s experience is peaceful and enriching. "Sometimes being at the library is the best part of their day,” Nimmo said, reflecting on the meaning for many library guests. “They get some quiet and peace, and that's the best we can do for them as a public library. The library offers a place of respite.” Thank a library aide today — they keep our libraries running!
