MAHONING VALLEY/UPDATE COMMUNITY JOURNAL
Chamber receives award for minority business effort
T
he Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber was recognized with an award last month for its collaborative efforts related to the consolidation of Anderson-Dubose, Inc. operations in the Mahoning Valley. During the 2012 Team NEO Economic Development Plus Awards Dinner on Wednesday, June 27 in Westlake, the Chamber garnered the Minority Business Development Award. Anderson-DuBose Inc., a minority owned business, recently ramped up operations in their new multimillion-dollar, 155,000-square-foot distribution center and headquarters at Ohio Commerce Center, 5232 Tod Ave. S.E., Lordstown. The company, which plans to create 160 jobs, provides logistics solutions and service to the world’s most elite corporations in the quick service food industry. The Regional Chamber worked with the company for more than two years by assisting them in locating a site to consolidate their Cleveland and Pittsburgh distribution operations and corporate headquarters. Regional Chamber staff provided a single point of contact throughout the company’s search process to ensure that all of their needs were being met in a timely fashion. Sarah Boyarko, the Regional Chamber’s vice president of Economic Development Retention and Expansion, said “It is always a compliment to be recognized by your peers for a job well done. The community worked together to land this deal. It was a combined effort of the Regional Chamber, Jobs Ohio, the Village of Lordstown, and the Trumbull County Commissioners, Planning Commission and One Stop.” In addition, the Regional Chamber was recognized by Team NEO as a finalist for the Regionalism & Cross-Border Collaboration Award for efforts in improving business development in Northeast Ohio. Team NEO, an 18-county economic development group in Northeast Ohio, annually salutes excellence in the field of economic development during this awards ceremony.
July 12 lecture to focus on organized crime
F
red Viehe, professor of American Urban History at Youngstown State University, will present “Characteristics of American Organized Crime” as part of the YSU Alumni Lecture Series 7 p.m., Thursday, July 12, in the Trustees Meeting Room in Tod Hall on the YSU campus. The cost is $5 for members of the YSU Alumni Society and $7 for non-members. RSVP by July 6 to Heather Belgin at habelgin@ysu.edu or 330-941-1591.
METRO MONTHLY ELECTRONIC IMAGE BY RON FLAVIANO
Mason Tibbetts of Team Homeplate poses with Scrappy after tossing out the first pitch during Metro Monthly’s annual company picnic in late June.
Viehe has taught and researched the history of organized crime for more than 20 years. He will discuss the role of primitive attitudes and behavior concerning American organized crime and the underworld’s significant involvement in hedonistic culture. Organized criminal groups historically have structured themselves according to archaic values to maintain ethnicity as the main foundation for social organization. To enforce their atavism, they have used excessive violence against those who do not share their values. At the same time, American organized crime has attempted to fulfill two major goals—maintain a past social structure and pursue a hedonistic future. Other upcoming programs in the Alumni Lecture Series include: ◆ Thursday, Sept. 20. “X-Planes and Hypersonic Transport,” Peyman Givi, Ph. D. (BE ’80). ◆ Thursday, Oct. 18. “Competing in the Global Market: Opportunities for Regional Businesses” Panel discussion. ◆ Wednesday, Oct. 24. “Public Protection: The Role of Certification and Licensure From a National Perspective of 25 Years in Emergency Medical Services,” William E. Brown, Jr. (BSAS ’77, BSN ’77). For more information on all Alumni Lecture Series programs, visit the YSU
Alumni and Events Management website, or contact 330-941-1591 or habelgin@ ysu.edu.
Wean Foundation awards $384,542 in local grants
T
he Raymond John Wean Foundation has awarded a total of up to $384,542 in its June 2012 round of grants to organizations involved in a variety of efforts in Warren, Youngstown and other Mahoning Valley communities. Projects range from building children’s skills before entering school to energizing support of the arts as an economic driver and narrowing the skills gap for manufacturing jobs. In the area of early childhood development, the Foundation will provide $60,307 to the Community Solutions Association of Warren to develop a strategy and business plan to publish and market its groundbreaking Project KIND regionally and nationally. Project KIND (Keys to Improvement for Necessary Development) is an educational life skills program that teaches social and behavioral skills. It is being used in the Warren, Youngstown, Campbell and Girard school districts. Project KIND has received a variety of positive evaluations and feedback, including federal recognition as an evidencebased curriculum, said Jeffrey M. Glebocki, president of the Wean Foundation.
The Foundation has supported the development and implementation of Project KIND since 2003. This new venture will allow the project to position itself successfully in the marketplace, diversify its funding sources and sustain itself in the long run, he said. The Wean Foundation also decided on further support to the Power of the Arts initiative for its work on the role of the arts in revitalizing communities in the Mahoning Valley. The $40,000 award will help support three initiatives: Completion and promotion of an economic impact study, being conducted with Americans for the Arts, of the arts in the Mahoning Valley; pursuit of public funding of the arts in Trumbull and Mahoning counties through ballot initiatives; and greater public outreach and community awareness of the arts as an economic driver. Glebocki said Power of the Arts is an endeavor that the Foundation helped launch because of the great impact that it can achieve. He said the initiative has, in a relatively short period of time, galvanized an increasing amount of community understanding and support for the role that the arts play in boosting the Mahoning Valley’s economy. The Foundation also awarded a $20,000 grant to the Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition for its efforts to provide opportunities for students, the unemployed and under-employed in the Mahoning Valley to advance to careers in manufacturing and earn a livable wage. The largest of the June grants, of up to $134,235, was earmarked for the Youngstown Schools Community Engagement Process, an effort by the Harwood Institute to assist the schools in emerging from academic emergency. JUNE 2012 WEAN GRANTS ◆ Community Solutions Association (Warren) – To develop a strategy and business plan to publish and market the Project KIND curriculum, $60,307. ◆ Community Solutions Association (Warren) – To support continuation of Warren SPARK in the city’s Willard and Jefferson neighborhoods, $65,000. ◆ The Harwood Institute (Bethesda, Md.) – Youngstown Schools Community Engagement Process, Up to $134,235. ◆ Help Hotline Crisis Hotline, Hotline Crisis Center Inc. (Youngstown) – To underwrite costs for merging Trumbull 2-1-1 with Help Hotline Crisis Center, $20,000. ◆ West Central Job Partnership (New Castle, Pa.) – To support comprehensive action plan and community mobilization efforts of the Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition, $20,000. ◆ Policy Matter Ohio Ohio – CASH Coalition, $20,000. ◆ Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County – Power of the Arts Initiative, $40,000. ◆ YMCA of Trumbull County – To support the salary of an inteim director and strategic planning activities in 2012, $25,000.

ieces of a Dream will headline the Youngstown Jazz Fest at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 7 in Youngstown. This free, family friendly event occurs at Harrison Common, located on Youngstown State University’s campus on North Walnut Street, across from the MVR. Pieces of a Dream, celebrating 32 years in music, is known internationally. The band has 15 major label albums to their credit. In addition, the group’s leader and keyboardist, James Lloyd, has lived in the Youngstown area for 12 years. “We thought it was important to showcase a major source of contemporary jazz music that resides right in our own backyard,” said musician Jere B, producer of the event. “The late jazz legend, Grover Washington Jr. not only discovered these guys, but toured with them internationally. James continues to write for and produce storied artists who top the jazz charts today.” The Youngstown Jazz Fest is a collaboration between the Mahoning County Convention & Visitors Bureau, The YSU Summer Festival of the Arts and the city of Youngstown. It is a part of the overall events associated with the Summer Festival of the Arts, held at and around YSU July 7 and 8. Other events that weekend include the Smoky Hollow 5 K and the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Summerfest. Additional acts include jazz trombonist John Reese, a staple in the local music community; YSU Dana School of Music graduate, Alton Merrell, who recently earned his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh where he presently teaches; Cleveland singer Laura Varcho, who’s debut CD “Desire” is making waves on the jazz charts, and a cameo appearance by 2011 headliners, SounDoctrine. “The primary goal is for this event has always been for our community to come together for a free evening of fun and celebration and have the opportunity to witness the many genres jazz has to offer. We are excited to also showcase many independent artists who are just as exciting and engaging as the nationally known acts," added Jere B. Additionally, this year's fest will honor the memory of sound engineer and musician Kim N. Hines, who passed away in late June. Hines was the chief engineer for last year's event and was scheduled to continue for this year. "He was a friend to all who are performing this year and had toured with many major artists, including Pieces Of A Dream. He will be sorely missed. We'll be jamming in his

RESTAURANTS
Springfield pairs summer beers with Kobe burgers, dogs V RESTAURANTS
alley Wine lovers had a number of fine tastings to choose from in June. Summer weight wines and beer predominated most of the events and quite a few were downright delicious. Our first event was held at Station Square Ristorante in Liberty with Wine and Dine Ohio pouring wines from around the world. The first wine of the evening sampled was the 2011 Cederberg Bukettraube from the mountainous Cederberg region of South Africa. The Bukettraube grape is a cross between Sylvaner and Frankenthal, and is still grown in Alsace, France (with a few small plots in Spain). This wine’s delicate floral aromas lead to mouth filling apricot flavors that seem to go on forever. This Cederberg selection will surely please everyone looking for a refreshing change of pace for summer fare. Chef Ottavio’s rich Scallops Risotto Carbonara was a perfect choice for the crisp and flashy Bukettraube. From South Africa, our next wine was the 2009 Villa Sparina Gavi di Gavi from Italy. Made from 100 percent Cortese, this 100 percent stainless fermented white features lush peach and citrus flavors followed by a crisp finish. The folks who ordered the Chilean sea bass grilled with pink crab sherry sauce simply raved about this fine pairing. The Villa Sparina Gavi di Gavi is another fine pick for the grilled chicken and fish entrees we enjoy during the summer. Our first red pick was the 2009 Maggio Family Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel
from Lodi, Calif. Plummy dark fruit and berry flavors and a lush lingering finish made this red a fine match for the Drunken Filet Tips tossed in creamy fettuccine. Our next red sample, also from the Maggio family of wines, was their delicious 2009 Petite Sirah. Deeply colored with ripe earth-tinged dark fruit flavors, it finishes long and spicy with a hint of cracked pepper. This tasty big-boned red was also a fine match for the Drunken Filet Tips. Our final red of the evening was the 2008 Shannon Ridge 2 Bud Block Zinfandel
from Lake County, Calif. This award-winning Zin produces ripe cherry and red fruit flavors leading to a balanced long finish tinged with spicy oak. Only 953 cases of this mostly Zin blend (5 percent Petite Sirah) was produced, so if you’re interested in trying this great wine, I wouldn’t tarry too long. The 20th Anniversary Charred Ribeye from Ottavio’s grill was a great match for this textbook Shannon Ridge Zin. Springfield Grille showcased a number of fine beers last month for their monthly dinner taste. The Grille’s food pairings for their monthly taste are always great, but they outdid themselves last month. Chef B.J. Sulka produced a four-course dinner that was simply outstanding. Our first course consisted of a mini Kobe beef slider
beef brisket with a side of Blacktruffle Purple Yukon potato salad was served with a glass of Crooked Tree IPA (Indian Pale Ale). Heavily hopped with piney citrus flavors, it was great with the spicy beef brisket. A housemade chocolate chip biscuit with homemade caramel-Guinness ice cream was presented to us for dessert. A serving of Guinness Black Lager was just the answer for this rich dessert. Cold brewed with roasted barley, it was more than enough for the scrumptious chocolate chip biscuit. I want to congratulate B.J. Sulka and his staff for one of the METRO MONTHLY ELECTRONIC IMAGE BY JOHN WEBSTER most enjoyable Springfille Grille Manager and Executive Chef B.J. Two Frey Winery a try. Charlie’s Fine Wines of Sam Adams fruit beers and Angry Orchard Howland featured two Frey wines in a rehard cider were served with the course. My cent Saturday store tasting. The Frey Natufavorite was the Angry Orchard Hard Apple ral Red ($14.99) is a blend of Carignan, Cider. Its bright apple fruit flavors and crisp Zinfandel and Syrah. Medium bodied with tangy finish were just the answer for this upfront red fruit and berry flavors, this orentrée. The Sam Adams Cherry Wheat Ale ganic wine should be on everyone’s “buy” was more traditional, with the beer taste list for upcoming outdoor cookouts. It was dominating the cherry flavor. The Sam delicious with the chicken that shop owner Adams Summer Lemon Wheat Beer was a Mike Lapmardo provided for the tasting. My next pick was the 2001 Frey Pinot hit with quite a few people. Flavored with lemon peel and grains of Paradise (imported Noir ($19.99) from Mendocino County, rare pepper), it should drink nicely during a Calif. Made from 30-year-old dry-farmed fruit, it delivers oodles of black cherry fruit summer heat wave. Our next entrée was local fried green flavors and finishes smooth with spicy flotomatoes with macadamia-coated fresh ral notes. This is one of the nicest organic mozzarella drizzled in a sweet Sauvignon wines I’ve ever sampled, and I recommend Blanc-basil emulsion. I’m a real fan of fried that you give it a try. Summer wines were on the table at Vingreen tomatoes, and the Grille’s version is delicious. Crisp Sauvignon Blanc-basil emulsion. Just when I thought we reached our and bright citrus flavors with a hint of pear culinary peak, our main course came and apple make this Riesling a sure hit for out. Fork-tender Memphis-style shaved fruit salads and grilled fish and chicken.
The
Wine Guy By John Webster My next pick was the 2010 Manu Pinot Gris from Marlborough, New Zealand. Wonderful floral notes and crisp citrus fruit flavors will make this a great wine to pair with shellfish or grilled chicken. Over the past few months, I’ve attended quite a few trade tastings, and I’ve found some real winners to pass along to you. At Cutting Edge Distributors Northwest Passage tasting in Cleveland, they had two wines from Oregon’s King Ridge Winery that I thought were excellent values. The 2010 Kings Ridge Riesling ($12.99) offers up bright citrus and stone fruit flavors and finishes with bright floral notes. This Riesling compares nicely to the highest quality “Pradikat” German wines that cost twice its asking price. Another fine bargain from Kings Ridge is their 2009 Pinot Noir ($17.99). Vibrant black cherry and raspberry flavors give way to a finish of spicy clove and roasted nuts. This is a fine medium-weight red for summertime drinking when heavier reds won’t do. Wine and Dine Ohio’s upcoming tastings will be on Thursday, July 26 at Café Cimmento Restaurant in downtown Youngstown, featuring Cescon Wines from Nannicola Imports; on Wednesday, Aug. 29, we’ll be at Stonebridge Grill and Tavern featuring Vintners Select wines. To make a reservation or get on the email list for Wine and Dine Ohio event information, call 330-651-8676 and leave a message, or contact us through the Wine and Dine Ohio website (www.wineanddineohio.com). If you have already signed up but haven’t been receiving emails lately, please email your contact information to jmwineguy@gmail.com, and we’ll make sure that you’re on the list. Other upcoming tastings include the Springfield Grille monthly wine dinner (call restaurant for date); Charlie’s Premier Wines of Howland, every Saturday; Wine Styles, every other week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday; Vintage Estate, third Saturday tasting; and Michael Charles Premier Wines on Elm Road, second Saturday tasting. If your restaurant, shop or charity event is having an upcoming wine tasting, please email me a month in advance at jmwineguy@gmail.com. I look forward to seeing you at events around the Valley.
