Northside hospital to get $20 million upgrade
V
alleyCare Health System of Ohio will break ground this month for a $20-million expansion and upograde of Northside Medical Center. It is the largest infrastructure investment made at the hospital in 15 years. ValleyCare will add a 30,000 square foot tower that will expand the emergency department and create a new main entrance, while modernizing more than 28,000 square feet of the existing hospital. This project is part of a five-year, $80 million capital expenditure made possible through ValleyCare’s affiliation with Community Health Systems in October 2010. “These improvements will enhance our number one priority – delivering quality care to our patients,” said ValleyCare Health System of Ohio CEO Kirk Ray. “These changes also will support our dedicated healthcare professionals by making hospital resources more accessible and efficient.” Nearly 70,000 patients sought care through ValleyCare emergency rooms in 2012, almost 30,000 at Northside alone. Updates to Northside’s ED, a designated Level III trauma center, will support prompt assessment, resuscitation and stabilization of injured patients. Noise will be reduced and patients will have more privacy through the creation of 21 private exam and trauma rooms. Improvements will continue Northside’s commitment to serve patients in 30 minutes or less and enhance the quality of care. “Northside has served the residents of the Mahoning Valley for more than a century,” said Northside Medical Center Board Chairman Sandy Kessler. “With these developments, it will be positioned to continue care for another 100 years.” In the three-story addition, the most visible component is a new main entrance that will serve as a central location from which patients and visitors access hospital resources. A new first floor lobby will include registration, preadmission testing, waiting rooms, a gift shop and an information center. The addition will also improve patient convenience by extending the hospital closer to the existing garage that offers covered parking. Surgical services will be combined in a single location by moving outpatient surgery to the second floor adjacent to existing surgery suites. The addition of 21 private patient holding rooms will streamline the surgical experience for patients and providers. On the third floor, endoscopy services will be enhanced with a new waiting area and the addition of two endoscopy suites and a bronchoscopy room. Since 2010, ValleyCare has invested approximately $50 million to improve hospital facilities such as the ongoing transition to private patient rooms, update technology, add new medical equipment and recruit physicians. Construction is expected to be complete in fourth quarter 2014. Northside is finalizing preparations to ensure continued patient comfort and access for all who come to campus throughout the process.
County real estate tax deadline set for Aug. 9
M
ahoning County property owners will receive their second-half real estate tax bills in the mail in the coming days, said Mahoning County Treasurer Daniel R. Yemma. Property owners who do not receive statements by July 9 should call the Treasurer’s Office at 330-740-2460 to confirm payment amounts or request copies of bills.

Rev. Joseph Rudjak (Holy Apostles Parish) and the Ethnic Heritage Society present Sister Jerome with the Lifetime Achievement Award during a recognition dinner in Canfield last month. Nearly 100 came to share in Sister Jerome’s honor. Educators, people from a variety of ministries, Ursuline Sisters, former associates and life-long friends were among the guests. The Treasurer’s office offers a number of ways to make tax payments. In an effort to encourage taxpayers to take advantage of technology, all Electronic Check Payments made during the designated tax collection period (July 8–Aug, 16) will be free. Owners can also pay taxes online by credit card. Refer to http://treasurer.mahoningcountyoh.gov for payment options. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday for taxpayers who prefer to pay in person. Payments may also be mailed to the Treasurer’s Office, 120 Market St., Youngstown, Ohio 44503. Any payment that is postmarked on/or before Aug. 9 will be recorded as on time. Paperless tax bills are now available. Visit http://treasurer.mahoningcountyoh.gov and click the attachment, “authorization form” then fill it out and return to: The Mahoning County Treasurer’s Office 120 Market St., Youngstown, Ohio 44503. Approximately $112 million has been charged to the county tax duplicate. The money is dispersed to each taxing district in the county. On average, two-thirds of real estate taxes are returned to local school districts. The remaining funds are shared by countywide voted levies for parks, libraries, children’s services and more, Yemma said.

A number of summer-weight wines to complement the season
M
idsummer is in full swing with a number of dinner tastes and exciting store tastings to report on. I’ve found quite a few delicious summerweight wines that should be on your dinner table this summer. I attended a Springfield Grille dinner taste featuring a Spanish theme, with five unique Spanish wines from different regions paired to complementary dishes. Springfield staff member Debi DeSousa, who is fluent in Spanish, led us through each course of food and wine, giving an added dimension to the evening’s fun. Our first wine was the Casteller Cava Brut made from three indigenous grape varieties (40 percent Macebeo, 40 percent Papellda, and 20 percent Xarello). It produces a dry sparkler bursting with green apple and citrus flavors that paired nicely with the ruby red grapefruit and cucumber gazpacho. The next entrée was a crispy duck tostada drizzled in Barcelona adobo sauce (traditional simmering sauce). A spicy 2011 Cortigo Rioja red was chosen for this dish. Supple red fruit and berry flavors led to a herb-tinged finish that complemented the spicy duck. A 2011 Licia Albarino was our third selection, a white from the Rias Baixas region of Spain. Bright and crisp citrus flavors led to a long mineral finish that was in step with the Paella salad made of chorizo sausage, shrimp, and bay scallops on a bed of crispy rice and greens, drizzled with Spanish sherry vinaigrette. Madrid-inspired slow-roasted pork with fingerling potatoes was presented with a glass of 2011 Vina Alarba Old Vine Garnacha (Grenache) from the Calatayud region of Spain. The slow-roasted pork was just plain mouth-watering and the lush berryinfused Garnacha was a fine match. Valencia churros (Spanish doughnuts) were served with a glass of Cava Mas Fi Brut Rose from Catalonia, Spain. Slightly off-dry with oodles of fresh berry flavors, this rose is produced from 100 percent Trepat grapes, found only in Catalonia. I found this wine to be particularly tasty with the chocolate dipping sauce served with the churros. I’d like to congratulate the Springfield Grille and especially Debi DeSousa for a wonderful culinary trip through Spain’s wine and food regions. The Grille’s June taste featured the Joel Gott line of wines paired to a host of scrumptious summertime foods. Chris Savelli, senior regional manager for Trinchero Family Estates, led us through the

The
Wine Guy By John Webster dinner explaining some of the Joel Gott wines that his firm distributes. We started with a glass of Joel Gott 2012 Pinot Gris from Willamette Valley, Ore. Very aromatic with juicy tropical fruit flavors, it was a nice match for the sage and summer squash crepe. I’ve become a fan of unoaked Chardonnay for summer fare, and Joel Gott’s 2011 Unoaked Chardonnay is a textbook example of this style. With no wood to mask the pure Chardonnay fruit flavors, this tasty blend of Napa, Monterey and Sonoma County fruit delivers apple-like flavors that complemented the lemon, mushroom grits and shrimp entrée. The third course was a roasted vegetable salad with seasonal berries drizzled in key lime juice. This dish was served with
a glass of Gott’s 2011 Alakai Red blend. Made from Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Carignan grapes, this lush cuvee (blend) exuded juicy red fruit flavors and paired wonderfully with the berry-drizzled roasted vegetables. Our next entrée was prosciutto-wrapped filet mignon topped with sliced figs. I have to congratulate the Springfield’s kitchen, as this was one of the finest steaks I’ve had in quite a while. Fork-tender, this filet needed a bold yet refined red to go with it, and Joe Gott’s 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon from sourced vineyards was just the answer for this outstanding dish. Deep red fruit flavors give way to a lush finish tinged with cinnamon. Dessert was a dark chocolate, rhubarb and strawberry Neapolitan, and a 2011 Joel Gott Zinfandel was just the answer for this rich creamy dessert. Bold berryinfused dark fruit flavors led to a supple finish tinged with new American oak. Once again, the Grille produced a fine evening of food and wine. I would also like to thank Chris Savelli for his insight-
ful tour of this fine California wine producer. Local store tastings produced a number of affordable wines for summer drinking. At $10 a bottle, the 2012 Ruffino Orvieto DOC Classico is quite a bargain. Refreshing apple fruit flavors and a crisp clean finish make this a good choice for summer salads topped with chicken or seafood. Another white you might want to try is the Amalaya 2012 Torrentez- Riesling (85 percent-15 percent) blend ($10.99). Fresh and lively citrus fruit flavors lead to a crisp finish tinged with honey. Chicken tacos or tilapia sautéed in garden tomatoes with green onions would be a good choice for this interesting white blend. One of the nicest roses I’ve tried lately is the 2011 A to Z Rose ($13.99, marked down from $18.99) from Oregon. Juicy red fruit and berry flavors follow through to a finish marked with strawberries and spice. Grilled chicken or salmon would go well with this tasty rose. A great red from the Carinena region of northern Spain is the 2011 Alto Cinco Garnacha (Grenache) at $13.99. Produced from old vines, it makes a wine bursting with ripe raspberry and black cherry flavors. Finishing long with hints of mocha and spice, and it should be a good choice for steaks hot off the grill or slow-cooked pork loin. Another great red for summer steaks is the 2010 Livelli Orion Primativo (Zinfandel) from Apulia, Italy ($14.99). Genetically similar to California’s own Zinfandel, it produces similar-tasting wines. Barbecued chicken or ribs would be delicious with this bold Italian red. Upcoming events include the Springfield Grille’s monthly wine dinner (call the restaurant for date); Upstairs Restaurant’s Wine Down, third Thursday tasting; Charlie’s Premier Wines of Howland, every Saturday; Wine Styles, every other week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday; Vintage Estate, third Saturday tasting; and Michael Charles Premier Wines (Elm Road), second Saturday tasting. If your restaurant, shop or charity event is having an upcoming wine tasting, please email me a month in advance at jmwineguy@ gmail.com.
