There’s nothing quite as satisfying as creating your own masterpiece, even if no one else sees it. Creativity - and the opportunity to express it - is a life-saver. When we have creative outlets in life, whether through painting, music, writing, acting, sculpting, singing or {fill in the blank}, we’re happier people, better equipped to handle life’s quandaries. We’re more relaxed and we’re actually smarter! The “brain muscles you build when you’re creating strengthen everything from motor skills and language development in kids to decisionmaking and reasoning abilities. Young or old or somewhere in between, get your creative juices flowing with Metro Arts programs.

Sometimes the biggest challenge to being fit is knowing how to begin. Pick one. Start here. Let us help you get started and stay strong.

Is it a fitness regimen? A discipline? A way to defend yourself? Martial arts provides all three. From Karate to Kendo, watch advanced practitioners and you know that martial arts increase strength, flexibility and cardio endurance, but did you know that it can also improve your posture, stamina and mental acuity? The sense of preparedness that comes with learning self-defense helps kids build confidence and resolve conflict in a healthy way. Aging adults who practice some sort of martial art can expect sharper mental function and delayed cognitive decline. Take a look at your options, slip off your shoes and join us in the dojo.

Park Ranger and Point Defiance Visitors Center Birding for Seniors Tacoma’s crown jewel park is home to birds of many feathers! Enjoy a short naturalist lecture (seating provided), followed by an optional short walk, thanks to Franke Tobey Jones Senior University.

You know that feeling you get when you see a rainbow, or uncover a bird’s nest, jump in a puddle or discover a new trail? Those “discoveries” are important parts of a happy, healthy life. They also give you something to think about, to compare your “indoors” life to. You learn what seasons really mean, how plants and animals work together, how what we do impacts where we live. When you step outside, you step into a whole new world that helps you develop creativity, compassion and adaptability. That means you’re aware and resilient: Other people see a rainy day; you see a rainbow and a puddle to jump into!

Swimming

Swimming

Autumn is the time to take swimming indoors with Metro Parks!

LEARN-TO-SWIM LESSONS

When you think about it, swimming is like a super power. It makes so much more of the surface of our planet available for you to enjoy! Learn to swim and you’re safer: Puget Sound, the ocean, pools, lakes and streams are everywhere, so it’s good to be able to handle yourself in and around water. Also, water provides about 12 times the resistance of working out on land, with much lower impact: Easy on your joints, great for cardiovascular and respiratory health. If you don’t swim yet, Metro Parks can teach you! If you want low-impact exercise and dozens of ways to enjoy the water, jump in and we’ll show you how!

We provide a fun environment where it’s easy to build confidence, make progress and create friendships. Session lengths for all ages (6 months to adult) and vary from 4 to 8 lessons, M/W, T/Th or Sat only.

New & Improved!

We start with the student: We meet you where you are so you can develop at your own pace. Build stamina, learn swim strokes, and increase your comfort and safety in, on and around water.

Visit MetroParksTacoma.org/swimming for the latest schedules, fees and details. RECREATION SWIM

We were all kids once. We know that when you have something to do and someone who expects to see you, you’re less likely to get into trouble. You’re also more likely to be safe, build healthy relationships, get better grades, feel better about yourself and see a brighter future, full of possibilities. Kids who engage in our youth programs, guided and seen by caring adults, feel they are a part of something. They belong, and it shows, from the quality of their schoolwork to the daily choices they make. When school is out, Metro Parks is in.
