Angelica Duncan, Theatre Arts
Angelica Duncan has been a theatre arts instructor for Metro Parks since 2005. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from Ithaca College, NY, and has studied abroad in London and Buenos Aires. She is also an Actor’s Studio Adjunct Artist at the Tacoma School of the Arts and has taught at Tacoma Little Theatre, Lakewood Playhouse and A Simple Wish. She is currently a cohort of Seattle’s Teacher Artist Training Lab. She has performed in countless musicals and plays locally and regionally, and also enjoys portraying special characters for birthday parties and special events. Angelica believes that acting is a way of life and she strives to create a safe, energetic and creative classroom environment in which students can let go of inhibitions. Angelica engages with her students on a personal level because “it takes a lot of guts to be onstage, presenting in front of an audience.” She says, “Acting can be extremely vulnerable work; actors must work to discover who they truly are while respecting and accepting those around them.”

Shred Fit Instructor
Kelly Norton
Shred Fit instructor Kelly Norton says she was overweight and spent a great deal of time learning how to get healthy before she found what worked for her. Now, as a fitness instructor at STAR Center, her passion is to inspire others to do the same. Kelly developed Shred Fit in 2008 as a HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workout for every fitness level. She said she expects her students to respect the needs of their bodies and honor their own range of motion, while pushing themselves beyond their comfort level. “Sound hard?,” she asks. “It is! But when we tune in with our bodies’ needs, we can make steady strides in our fitness goals.” A fitness instructor for six years, Kelly says that in every class she teaches, she is inspired by her students’ strength. “I’m not talking about how many push-ups they can do,” she says. “I’m talking about the effort, tenacity and intensity they put into their goals in and out of the gym.” Kelly’s Shred Fit class is at 5:30 pm on Tuesdays and 5:45 pm on Thursdays at STAR Center. Free to STAR Pass Holders; $5 drop-in fee for general public

Coach Profile

John Rembert, Sr.
More than 35 years of coaching experience has built John Rembert’s reputation as a “dynamic, no-nonsense” coach. That’s how longtime Metro Parks’ youth sports coordinator Roy Fletcher describes him. John himself is a little more understated, explaining that he believes in “taking care of business.” Though he currently coaches Metro Parks’ fastpitch softball, he has also coached football, basketball and baseball for the parks district, as well as soccer for other leagues since 1976. A man with two softball-playing daughters of his own, John says he enjoys helping kids learn the correct way to play sports. In Roy Fletcher’s eyes, “kids excel” under John’s tutelage and his willingness to “go the extra mile for kids.” “The more time we spend with youth,” John believes, “the more they learn and become productive.”
