MCC Graduate Quentin Savwoir Quentin Savwoir grew up in Kansas City. He graduated from the Paseo Academy– part of the Kansas City Public School District. Now he works for the city in Mayor Sly James’ office. “My title is Special Assistant for Public Policy. I work in the areas of public health, transportation and energy efficiency. I am responsible for making sure that the Mayor is fully aware of ordinances and any developments in those three areas” said Savwoir. “I am a son of Kansas City and having this job, in this role, is allowing me to experience the City that I love in a different way. I am able to see the decisions that impact so many lives and make the difference in so many lives day in and day out. And it allows me to appreciate the city much differently.” When he talks about his journey, Savwoir explains it was not necessarily an easy path. He attended three other higher education institutions in the area. He referred to those attempts as false starts, but then he enrolled at MCC. “I recognized that at my core, I am a student and I like to learn. And it was something about unlocking my desire to understand my greatness and potential that enabled my success at MCC. And I had a really good group of people who were supporting me. I knew I didn’t want to go to a school where I was just another number. When I walk down the hall, I wanted my teacher to be able to call me by name. When someone asks me about MCC, I tell them it was the best decision I have ever made in my life, ” said Savwoir.

CAREER PATH
More than just a job – you can have a career. Many of today’s best paying jobs don’t require a bachelor’s degree. In fact, there are many jobs that pay between $45,000 and $65,000 a year that only require an associate degree or short-term certificate. MCC works with area companies to ensure what you learn here will put you in a position to get the career you dreamed of.

MCC Graduate Charlie Shields Before he was in charge of Truman Medical Centers, Charlie Shields was an MCC student. “When I was in college, it was important to me to keep my job. I wanted to stay local, so I went to MCC-Longview,” Shields said. “I was amazed at what a great experience I had there. The instructors’ commitment to my success really stood out to me.” One instructor in particular, Mel Aytes, helped paved the way for Shields’ political career. Prior to his current role as TMC president and chief executive officer, Shields served 20 years in the Missouri General Assembly and even became President pro-tem of the Missouri Senate. “That instructor really got me interested in politics and led me down a path I’m not sure I would have gone otherwise,” Shields said. After earning his associate degree from MCC, Shields graduated from the University of Missouri, where he earned a bachelor’s in marketing as well as a master’s in business administration. Today, he oversees two acute-care hospitals and a behavioral health facility. TMC is also the largest provider of inpatient and outpatient care in the Kansas City metropolitan area, serving more than 100,000 patients a year.
MCC’s partnership with the Lee’s Summit School District and the University of Central Missouri is recognized as one of the top workforce development programs in the country.

MCC Graduate Aubrey Kent Aubrey Kent, an alumna of MCC-Blue River, was named a 2016 New Century Scholar by earning the top Missouri score in the All-USA Community College Academic Team competition. The honor came with a $2,000 scholarship, presented to Kent on April 2016 in Chicago at the American Association of Community Colleges convention. Kent, of Independence, majored in general studies earning a 4.0 GPA and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biology at William Jewell College in Liberty, wanting to work in genetic research. More than 1,900 students across the country were nominated for New Century Scholars honors. Judges consider grades, leadership, activities and, most important, how students extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom. She was on track to graduate from high school in 2003, but she ended up putting her education on hold. She says setting an example for her two children ultimately pushed her to earn her high school diploma and go on to college. “Receiving this scholarship was an extreme honor, especially when there are so many amazing and talented students who applied,” Kent says. “Having been the only student in Missouri to have won is a feeling that is almost impossible to articulate.” Blue River, she adds, “has been more than a college to me — it is like a second home. The students, staff and faculty are all amazing people who I appreciate so very much.”
