Southern Belle’s Cakery Custom Cakes and Sweet Treats
By Whitney Thompson
When Jamie Fago was a little girl in Mobile, Alabama, she spent lots of time in the comfort of her great grandmother Sissy’s kitchen. It was there that she learned to bake her famous “Sissy cake,” a vanilla almond pound cake that was her signature. In college, Jamie found inspiration in baking competitions on television, and she made her first custom shaped cake for her now husband Joey’s birthday. The side hustle that was born became a custom cake business that soon outgrew her home kitchen. Jamie and Joey decided then that it was time to expand. The Southern Belle’s Cakery storefront opened in May 2021, despite the pandemic and all the challenges it has presented. Every day in the cheerful, quaint bakery, you can find cake pops, cookies, cupcakes, and even Joey’s famous Rice Krispies® treats. Treat yourself to a cold-brew coffee and a slice of the famous Sissy cake that started it all! And of course, you can order a custom cake for your next event. Jamie and Joey have been overwhelmed by the support of the community. “To realize that we could really do this has been unbelievable. You really can build anything from something very small.” Joey and Jamie have two beautiful daughters, Elizabeth, age 8 and Emilia, age 5.
