25A Healthy Home Environments

by Dr Ken Grey AP, DOM Holistic Physician

Making a connection with the bodies that house ours souls and the homes that house our bodies can be eluding. As with all Love affairs, this type of relationship will take time, patience, and perseverance. Each time we embark on a new living space, it is our prerogative to see the opportunity to create a Sanctuary.

For some of us lightness only comes with flying away to some destination, while home is viewed as just a place to hold the things we own or own us, of shelter, protection from the elements, and possibly raise a family, some- times create a work space, and of course to eat and sleep.

How do we create a Living sculpture of our life? How can our homes offer the opportunity to build an extension to our lives more than just the chore of living?

Feng Shui, originating from ancient china, is the art of spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to the flow of energy (Qi).

The art of Feng Shui claims to use energy forces to harmonize individuals with their surrounding environment. The term ‘feng shui’ literally translates as “wind-water” in English. In the search for balance and healing we may forget to look to what is closest to us. Taking courses, attending week long retreats, and subscribing to foreign belief systems in the never-ending search to clear the clutter and stress from our lives will prove futile if we are surrounded by clutter, imbalance and disorganization in our homes.

Some simple ways to create a temple of rest, relaxation, and happiness:

1.Choose cotton, silk, wool, and natural fiber fabrics for objects that touch your skin whenever possible. 2. Use Storage Bins for seasonal decorations and objects clearly labeled and stored out of site when not in use.

3.Purchase all tools, kitchen , cleaning etc. with a conscious attention to detail and passion for use. For instance, knives and cooking instruments that feel great in your hand and are satisfying to use. Pots and pans that inspire you to cook, Dish soap and cleaning solutions without harsh chemicals that smell great and have natural mood enhancing essential oils.

4. Style your home with an intention for each room, and with the same sentiment that you would style your wardrobe. Comfortable rooms should feel comfortable and have color combinations that are soothing and relaxing hues. Choose furniture with round edges. Rooms for entertaining may be more energized with brighter colors, and furniture with sharper edges and exalting objects.

5. Do not underestimate the power of great art. Beautiful art can be found in the most unassuming places, museums , local social places exhibiting artists, good will, donation type places, and more. Choose what moves you and makes an impression on your mind, and heart, as well as your eyes..

Furthermore, a healthy home environment can include elements from nature to enhance your environment such as plants and semiprecious stones like Quartz. It is said that the vibration of Quartz enhances spiritual growth, spirituality, awareness, and wisdom. It increases inspiration and creativity. It can also help with concentration, studying, and retaining what one learns. It is a stone of harmony and is helpful in romantic relationships. Treating our home with such precious regard, one can establish a Cocoon from which we emerge anew each day.
