We encourage our employees to be passionate about their work, and to contribute to society through our work. What are the challenges you faced while completing Mumbai Metro Line 1 project? And what is your assessment of reason behind the bottlenecks in some projects?
INTERVIEW Mumbai Metro Line 1 faced challenges that most urban projects experience. These included delays as a result of previously unidentified live utilities that were encountered during construction. The process of addressing these utilities was time-consuming and adversely impacted the overall schedule of the project, as well as the cost. In addition, obstructions within the right-of-way in the nature of properties to be acquired also resulted in delays. In addition, the metro line crossed existing railway lines. The approval process by Indian Railways for the resultant bridges required over the railway lines further delayed the project. The problems encountered on the Line 1 project are the typical reasons why most urban projects, including metro rail projects, experience delays How this project is different from Mumbai Metro Phase 1? And what are different strategies you need to adopt to complete this project?

Alstom’s Cordia iLint: World’s first emission free Hydrogen Train, rolled out in Germany
The world’s first hydrogen train is entering into commercial service and is ready for serial production. They have made their global debut in the northern countryside of Germany. The hydrogen-powered vehicles can travel the span of 600 miles (1000 km) on one tank of hydrogen. The trains rely on fuel cells that can produce electricity from a combined mixture of hydrogen and oxygen. The models are extremely efficient in the conversion — excess electricity can be siphoned into ion lithium batteries stored on board. The only by-products emitted by this process are steam and water. The zero-emission alternatives are attractive because of their quieter, eco-friendly nature and ability to run without electrified railways. The efficient trains were produced by French transportation engineers at Alstom.

As Alstom put its hydrogen multiple units into traffic in Lower Saxony on September 17, the company confirmed significant interest from the UK in the technology. The trains can run for around 620 miles (1,000 km) on a single tank of hydrogen, similar to diesel trains. It can carry up to 300 passengers with seats for 150, boasting a top speed of 140 km/h (87 mph), and has acceleration and braking performances similar to the diesel-powered Coradia Lint 54. In between runs, the Coradia iLint trains will be fuelled at a mobile hydrogen filling station. Hydrogen will be pumped into the trains from a 40-foot (12 metre) high steel hydrogen gas container next to the tracks at Bremervoerde station, Germany. With one tank, they can run throughout the network for the whole day.
Alstom is betting on the technology as a greener, quieter alternative to diesel on nonelectrified railway lines - an attractive prospect to many German cities scrambling to combat air pollution Alstom will deliver a further 14 Coradia iLint trains, and if they prove to be a success, more will likely be seen in other regional areas of the country.

A stationary filling station on Elbe-Weser Train (EVB) premises is also scheduled to go into operation in 2021. Hydrogen fuel cells are one of the best greener ways to power vehicles. But at the same they have also been costprohibitive. World’s first hydrogen now that's starting to change the German passengers boarded it. Stefan Schrank, a project manager at locomotive company Alstom said that sure, buying a hydrogen train is somewhat more expensive than a diesel train.
On a single track the new trains transport passenger along 100 kilometers (62 miles) of track and can travel up to 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) on a single tank of hydrogen, reaching top speeds of 140 km/h (87 mph).
Even though they remain pricey, hydrogen fuel cells have advantages over batteries. For Hydrogen train Instead of recharging, for instance, you can just refuel them like you would a gas or diesel engine. This train will help to cut carbon emission, and powering with hydrogen instead of diesel could be much more beneficial.

What do you think about metro railway, rapid rail transit and high-speed rail revolution in the major metropolitan cities in the India?
India currently is facing transportation issues and need a Transport transformation strategy to carry the passenger and goods in a smarter way. Amongst them, Metro sector has become one of the convenient modes of transport in India for all sections of our society. The good part is that Government of India is taking number of initiatives to enhance public transport, particularly in the cities. Foreign investment has been invited in this sector. As per a recent comment from our PM, Shri Narendra Modi, fifty cities in India are ready to implement metro rail projects. Coming on to HSR, India is a large country and thus there is enormous potential for the longhaul travel ranging from 150kms+

onwards where the concept of High Speed Rail will be relevant. Though we have been serving by Indian Railways which also is the fourth largest railway network in the world, but has its own limitations of speed and technological infrastructure. India needs more fast trains than the current Shatabdi as not all people can afford Air Travel. If HSR is introduced like any other European country, it is expected that people will shift from personal vehicles/Road transport to this mode which will be a safer transport mode than others. At the same time, the places having low connectivity or where Metros aren’t feasible, Monorail systems can be implemented specially in Industrial area. For carrying commercial Goods, initiatives like laying dedicated fright corridor is an extremely good initiative by the Government and this definitely will ease out Goods traffic load from passenger tracks of Railway network. ABS India is also working with all Major Metro provider in India. •
