OCO CHANEL once commented that “in order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.â€? A handful of local boutiques seem to have taken her immortal advice to heart. In defiance of the mass market’s dictates, one-ofa-kind clothing stores are popping up across the county, each with a singular stylistic DNA. Small labels, locally crafted fashions and even carefully curated recycled accessories are their stock in trade. One noteworthy newcomer, Stripe, celebrates its oneyear anniversary this month; others, like Cameron Marks, Tom Teifer, Pacific Trading Company and too many others to do justice to here, have been at it for years, aesthetic outposts on the fashion frontier. In this year’s fashion issue—featuring photographs by Dina Scoppettone, and interviews with soon-to-be-famous treasure hunters and entrepreneurs in organic style—we propose that small is beautiful, different is good and Coco was right. ¨ !

Twist’s handbag expert is getting attention
W
HEN Lara Marotta decided to open Twist last summer, “with no money and Facebook, it was all about the clothes. In the Pacific Avenue storefront where she used to run Galla Cabana before selling it several years ago, her concept for a high-end consignment store stocked with designer labels began to take shape. Sophisticated Ralph Lauren dresses and Gucci jackets would hang next to playful Free People sweaters and shimmering Bebe halter tops, carefully chosen fashion pieces at a fraction of the original price. Then Marotta met Carolyn Bowers. And now, in addition to impeccably stylish consignment clothing in excellent condition, Twist is winning a following for its huge collection of preowned designer handbags. At its Aug. 1 opening, the store had one display of bags by designers like Kate Spade, Coach and Gucci as well as midmarket brands like LeSportsac and Land’s End. Now it has five. “It’s 90 percent of my business, says Marotta, sounding a little awestruck. Bowers waves away praise. “It works out well for everyone, she says. “I feel like I’m doing a good thing. All women love bags. Even if they just like to carry a shopping tote. Her humility notwithstanding, Bowers is Twist’s secret weapon, a onewoman treasure-hunting operation with satchels, hobos and clutches as the booty. She’s understandably coy about her techniques, which include both online sleuthing and real-world digging, but the fact is her expertise can’t be replicated. What started as a hobby six years ago with the purchase of a silver compact that turned out to be a valuable antique has become almost a sixth sense for quality. “Like when I felt this, I just knew, Bowers says, touching the impossibly supple leather of a pale green Bottega Veneta hobo. New, it fetched in the neighborhood of $1,200; here it’s priced at $400. Similarly, an understated but unusual satchel turned out to be a handpainted Goyard, a French luggage maker

similar to Louis Vuitton but harder to find. It goes on like that, shelf after shelf of gems rescued and restored. A huge part of Bowers’ job is detecting inauthenticity—and that gets harder and harder. “It’s incredible, she says, shaking her head, when asked about the quality of knock-offs. “There are AAA-quality replicas. They use good leather, good hardware, everything. It takes all of Bowers’ encyclopedic knowledge about zippers, liners and certification tag patterns to filter out the frauds. Then she must clean the bags, very carefully, liners and all, using tools and products she’s discovered over time. The result is a candy case of good-quality accessories at all price points, from $10 to $700—something everyone can appreciate.

Globetrotting Style Synergy Clothing comes home to Santa Cruz
A
LOT has changed since Kate Fisher locked eyes with Henry Schwab at a Phish concert in 1997. She was a Deadhead peddling Indian textiles; he was a Greenpeace activist touring with Phish’s nonprofit arm the Waterwheel Foundation. And yeah, yeah—they grew up, got married and had kids, but Fisher’s clothing line Synergy grew up with them, culminating with her new downtown Santa Cruz storefront, Synergy Clothing, which opened in January. “We started in our 20s and now we’re in our mid, late 30s. We’re young families and young adults wanting to be eco-minded. People who are more willing to shop at Whole Foods or Staff of Life, she says. “We’re growing up in that whole demographic that’s been developing over the last 10 years. Fisher got her start at 21 on a vacation to India and Nepal in 1993, when she came back with a suitcase full of recycled silk saris, brocades and other textiles. Once she realized there was a market for the look, the native New Yorker designed contemporary, Western-style clothing, like spaghetti strap dresses, and had them sewn from the traditional cloth. “An Indian woman would wear it in a marriage ceremony, then it came to a woman here in the States living her life. I liked that idea of the cultural history of the fabric, she says. Synergy (named for the marriage of Eastern cloth and Western style) started in 1995 and rode the wave of bohemian chic that crested when the likes of Madonna and Gwen Stefani stuck bindis to their foreheads in the late ’90s. By then Fisher and Schwab were married and living in Santa Cruz, selling clothing at trade shows and concerts. The line hit a commercial high note with an order from Urban Outfitters. “Then it started to die out, says Fisher. “There was less demand in the marketplace and I was starting to get bored with that motif. As she began exploring new ways to work with recycled materials, she learned more about organic cotton being grown in India. The concept meshed well with the couple’s hippie roots. “Coming from the world of environment nonprofits, working so long for Greenpeace, it was natural, says Schwab. “Our business is an extension of who we are.
0G 83AA71/ :CAA3<6=>
The shift really took place after the birth of baby number one in 2006, when Schwab stepped up full-time to handle the business side of Synergy. The line split into three parts: Synergy, which still makes some items from recycled silks; Synergy Organic, a youthful line that includes T-shirts, screen prints and hand appliquĂŠs; and Kate Organic, a more upscale line of organic cotton dresses, pants and tops all sewn in the Bay Area. Everything is made with organic cotton, hemp and low-impact dyes. While Synergy Organic has a more junior vibe with birds, clouds and f lowers screenprinted on swingy, soft cotton garments, Kate Organic has a more classic essentials look. But they all share Fisher’s basic inspiration and commitment to environmental ethics. “I guess what inspires me are clothes that look good and are functional, that make a woman feel feminine but are easy to wear,â€? she says. “I want someone to be able to throw on a dress and know she looks good. Puts on her shoes and is out the door.â€? Fisher and Schwab opened their storefront on Walnut Street in the old Bay Photo location at what many might have considered an odd time economically. But the company is very healthy, says Schwab, despite the economic downturn, having done about $1 million in sales in the last year. Synergy clothes are selling in 300 stores in 45 states. “We’ll ship to yoga studios, spas, health food stores, mom and pop boutiques,â€? says Schwab—and they now look forward to expanding their retail location. Between the addition of an accessories line, the couple’s frequent trips to trade shows all over the country and the line’s growing popularity in places like Belgium and Japan, it’s a wonder they find the time to come home to sleepy Santa Cruz. “I like the pulse of urban life,â€? explains Fisher. “But Santa Cruz has an easy life. I like the lifestyle.â€? And that jet-set mind-set in a soft gauzy body comes through in the clothes—another type of synergy. 0

?C33@ ?C33<A 7< B63 ?@CH LAUGHTER may not be able to pay your credit card bill, find you a job or bring back the heartbreaker who left you blubbering into your beer last week, but it sure has its way of putting things into perspective. The Queer Queens of Qomedy are like trained professionals when it comes to administering belly laughs and happy tears, and they are headed our way to lighten things up. Although “Qomedy may sound like an exclusive sort of humor, producer Poppy Champlin promises the straight folks an equal dose of the good stuff. The witty Champlin hosts the show and brings along two very funny sidekicks. Voted one of the top ten lesbian comics by Curve Magazine is the sassy Sandra Valls of The Latin Divas of Comedy and One Night Stand-Up. The third queen is Roxanne Ward, a piano-playing, parody-song-singing high school teacher who may just be the secret love child of Steve Martin and Bette Midler. (Maria Grusauskas)
QUEER QUEENS OF QOMEDY perform Saturday, March 6, at 8pm at the Rio Theatre, 1205 Soquel Ave., Santa Cruz. Tickets are $30 at Streetlight Records or Ticketweb.

(PG-13; 95 min.) Lone Scherfig’s British coming-of-age film ends with a marathon session of tea brewing, but it has its good points. The look is cool—1960ish England may be more interesting than the full-blown and overexposed later ’60s. Twickenham-raised Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is studying for Oxford when she gets picked up by David (Peter Sarsgaard), a slightly older rotter; his slightly cruel eyes and flat smile forecast trouble to come. Until then, Jenny gets to see London high life and nightclubs, and voyages to Paris. Smelling class, and wanting to make their hard-working daughter happy, Jenny’s parents (Cara Seymour, Alfred Molina) relax the leash. And that’s when the young girl learns how David makes his money without working days. Mulligan is charming, the meet-cute is deft and Olivia Williams bears all the movie’s spine as a deliberately drabbeddown English teacher. and a 15-year-old girl (Katie Jarvis) staged in a no-hope housing project in Essex, England. Director Andrea Arnold is a fiendishly persuasive director, and she makes you see things from Mia’s view. The film is the furthest thing from a slumming expedition; we can see past Essex’s rubbish heaps, junkyards and tired-looking houses into something wild— particularly at the plot’s climax at the Thames estuary, where the land ends as abruptly as if it had been chewed away by a steam shovel. The finale is where this little film gets big: it’s like the end of a Romantic novel when the elements are brought in to witness the emotional states of the characters on a windy fen or the banks of churning water. Arnold observes the raw hedonism and willfulness that makes a poor life bearable. It’s rare when a director who is so sensitive, who has such a sure eye and ear, can understand the bliss of a hard party. (RvB) B63 6C@B :=193@
(R; 138 min.) The soldiers of Bravo Company are stationed in Baghdad for the 2004 fighting. Central to the film is the mystery of Staff Sgt. James (Jeremy Renner) who comes in to replace a slaughtered demolition expert. James’ risk-taking amazes and angers his subordinate, Sgt. Sanborn (Anthony Mackie). The suspenseful, grimly funny script is by co-producer Mark Boal. Renner is outstanding as the inhumanly brave demolition expert. Director Kathryn Bigelow does what Howard Hawks would do; she finds the cooperation between men of great competence in a killing trade, rather than pumping up rivalry. Bigelow breaks through the sense of anonymity that characterizes most Iraq war movies, where helmeted men move alike and talk the same terse slang. (RvB)
Despite the various stops and starts he has had adapting the Cervantes classic, Gilliam repeatedly makes films about fantasy as an escape from a cruel world. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus has Christopher Plummer in the Man of la Mancha role this time, with Verne Troyer as Percy, a dwarf Sancho Panza. Plummer plays Doctor Parnassus, an immortal sage reduced to busking in a horse-drawn Gypsy wagon. He and his crew set up their stand in the streets of modern-day London, trying to lure patrons in to a world beyond the doctor’s mirror. On board is his daughter, who doesn’t know that she has been promised to the devil on her 16th birthday; Mr. Nick (Tom Waits) is sniffing around already. During their travels, the group rescues a hanged man named Tony (an irresolute Heath Ledger). Certainly, Gilliam’s love for antique theater is true—although the greasepaint and cardboard make one wonder why he didn’t stage this story instead of filming it. Robert Downey Jr.’s expert acting reflects William Blake’s thought that if you could open the doors of perception, you would see the world as it is: infinite. The schoolteacher comments that what we see will help us understand “the events that came after.â€? By “the events,â€? director Michael Haneke may mean Germany’s next 30 years after 1914. Eichwald is a serpent’segg hatchery: the village’s obedient children will be participants in the kaiser’s war and Hitler’s crime wave. 102 min.) It’s not a perfect film, but The Wolfman is a loving remake, made by people who understood the romance, pathos and torment of the original 1941 film. This new animal has speed on his side, and there’s more viscera flying around. In 1891, after the horrific death of his brother, the noted Shakespearean actor Lawrence Talbot (Benicio del Toro) returns home to his family’s mansion. This means a re-encounter with his estranged father Sir John (Anthony Hopkins). The town gossip has it that Lawrence’s brother was killed by a tame dancing bear owned by a band of Gypsies; when investigating on a moonlit night, Lawrence himself is nearly killed by the real culprit. The fiancĂŠ of the late brother (Emily Blunt) stays to nurse Lawrence back to health And when the next moon rises, well, you know. The Talbot scenes suggest Del Toro was cast for his resemblance to Lon Chaney Jr., with his clouded, thick features and his air of suffering. We see the human under the fur. (RvB)

Astrology Free Will
By Rob Brezsny
For the week of March 3 /@73A (March 21–April 19): To place yourself in smooth alignment with planetary rhythms, do conscientious work on the foundations of your life. Take extra care of the people who take care of you. Make sure you have a good supply of the various resources that keep you strong and steady. Check to see if maybe you need to rev up your emotional connection with the traditions you hold dear. But that’s only half your horoscope, Aries. Here’s the rest: Invite your most rambunctious playmates over for a raucous home-blessing ceremony. B/C@CA (April 20–May 20): Two-thirds of people surveyed said they would rather look good than feel good. I hope you’re not one of them. The ironic fact of the matter is that if you put the emphasis on looking good in the coming week—creating favorable impressions, acting dishonest in order to curry favor, wearing uncomfortable but attractive clothes—you will end up feeling sub-par and looking mediocre. On the other hand, if you put the priority on feeling good—treating your body like a beloved pet, seeking out encounters that nurture your secret self, and hanging out in environments that encourage you to relax—you will look good and feel good.
53;7<7 (May 21–June 20): If you’re bogged down in the trance of the humdrum routine, astrology can open your mind and illuminate fascinating patterns that have been invisible to you. It can reveal the big picture of your life story, sweeping away the narrow ideas and shrunken expectations you have about yourself. And it can purge your imagination of its endless tape loops, awakening you to the power you have to create your own destiny. But reliance on horoscopes can also have downsides. If you’re superstitious, it might make you even more so. If you’re prone to be passive, believing that life is something that happens to you, it might further diminish your willpower. That’s why, as much as I love astrology, I’m wary of its potential to deceive and lead astray. Is there anything comparable in your world, Gemini? Something that feeds and inspires you, but only if you’re discerning about it? This is a good time to ratchet up your discernment.
believes it gives her abilities that non-autistic people don’t have. For example, her extreme sensitivity and extraordinary visual memory are at the root of her unique insights into the needs of animals. If there were an instant cure for her autism, she says, she wouldn’t take it. She’s an advocate of neurodiversity. Now here’s my question for you, Libra: Do you have a supposed weakness or disability that’s actually an inherent part of one of your special talents? Celebrate and cultivate it this week.
A1=@>7= (Oct. 23–Nov. 21): Self-help author Barbara De Angelis wrote a book that offers to help us learn “how to make love all the time. Maybe I’ll read it someday, but right now I’m more interested in your take on the subject. How would you make love—not have sex, but make love—with your sandwich, with the music you listen to, with a vase of flowers, with the familiar strangers sitting in the cafe, with everything? Your expertise in this art is now at a peak.
A/57BB/@7CA (Nov. 22–Dec. 21): It’s not a good time to treat yourself like a beast of burden or to swamp yourself with dark, heavy thoughts. You’re extra sensitive, Sagittarius—as delicate and impressionable as a young poet in love with a dream of paradise. You need heaping doses of sweetness and unreasonable amounts of f luidic peace, smart listening, and radical empathy. If you can’t get people to buoy your spirits and slip you delightful presents, do those things for yourself. 1/>@71=@< (Dec. 22–Jan. 19): In some of the newspapers that publish my horoscope column, my carefully wrought text is buried in the back pages amidst a jabbering hubbub of obscene advertisements for quasi-legal sexual services. For readers with refined sensibilities, that’s a problem. They do their best to avert their eyes, narrowing their focus down to a tight window. I think you’ll be wise to adopt a similar approach in the coming week, Capricorn. Only a small percentage of information coming your way will be truly useful to you, and it may often be embedded in a sparkly mess of distracting noise. Concentrate hard on getting just the essentials that you want so you won’t be misinformed and worn out by the rest.
1/<13@ (June 21–July 22): I don’t care whether you call it uncanny intuition or plain old telepathy: In the next three weeks, you will have unusually abundant access to that way of knowing. So please use it. Please call on it. It could steer you away from twisty wastes of time that don’t serve your highest good. It might also allow you to ferret out disguised or hiding opportunities. There’s one catch: If you don’t believe in them, your psychic powers won’t work as well as they can. So I suggest you set aside any dogmatic skepticism you might have about them and proceed on the hypothesis that they are very real.
/?C/@7CA (Jan. 20–Feb. 18): Do your own stunts, Aquarius. Don’t commandeer a stunt double to do them for you. Accept blame and claim credit that rightfully belong to you. Don’t scare up scapegoats or tolerate plagiarists. It will also be a good idea to deliver your own messages and sing your own songs and kick your own butt. No surrogates or stand-ins, please. There’s just no way, you see, for you to get to where you need to go by having a substitute do the traveling for you. Your only hope of claiming the reward that will be crucial for the next chapter of your life story will be to do the work yourself.
:3= (July 23–Aug. 22): Let’s poke around to see if we can stir up some good trouble, Leo. The time is right. You’re in need of a friendly disruption or two. Fortunately, I’m sensing there’s a forbidden temptation that isn’t so forbidden any longer . . . as well as a strange attractor you might find inspiring and a volatile teaching that would turn you insideout in a good way. Are you willing to wander into a previously off-limits area? Hey, look. There’s one of those mystery spots I was hinting about. I wonder what would happen if you pressed that green button. Go ahead. Don’t be . . . Gaaaahhhhh! Unnhhh! Wha?! I mean WOW! That was very interesting. Try it again!
>7A13A (Feb. 19–March 20): One of the best new bands of 2009 was the Girls. Spin magazine selected their debut CD Album as the fifth best album of the year. After touring for months and selling scads of records, the band came back home to San Francisco in February to do a sold-out show at the Great American Music Hall. For his on-stage apparel, lead singer Christopher Owens wore baggy orange f lannel pajama bottoms and a rumpled green f lannel shirt, proving that his new-found fame had not rendered him self-important or excessively dignified. I nominate Owens as your role model this week, Pisces. I’d like to see you move on up toward the next level in your chosen field of endeavor, even as you remain perfectly comfortable, full of casual grace, and at home in your excellence.
D7@5= (Aug. 23–Sept. 22): You may be prone to overreaction. You could be on the verge of uncorking an excessive response to a modest prompt. On a regular basis, you should ask yourself: “Are the feelings rising up in me truly appropriate for what’s happening now? Or are they mostly the eruption of material that I repressed in the past? I also encourage you to consider Hoare’s Law of Large Problems, which says that inside every large problem is a small problem scrambling to get out. Be alert for the possibility that minor adjustments will work better than epic struggles. :70@/ (Sept. 23–Oct. 22): Temple Grandin is a successful autistic person. Diagnosed at an early age, she nevertheless went on to earn a Ph.D. in Animal Science and became a bestselling author whose work has led to notable improvements in the humane treatment of livestock. Although she acknowledges that her autism has caused her problems, she also
