THE BULLHORN

COUPLE months ago, I opened an unexpected package from a parishioner serving now in the Persian Gulf. It was an American f lag, folded neatly, an expression of her gratitude. The certificate said she’d f lown it in a combat mission over Iraq on Christmas Day, 2009. Before shipping out, she’d attended church services here in Santa Cruz for a year and a half. Most Sundays, she and a friend slipped out of Monterey, where they were studying at the Defense Language Institute, rode up the coast and joined us for worship. They were quiet, both of them, but always grateful, intensely grateful. I remember, especially, their smiling widely as they received the bread and cup at communion each week. Like it mattered. A lot. Tucked in the same package was a letter. She reminded me that she’d found our church during a difficult time, a tense time. “You have no idea how much it meant for me to have some place to go to escape the stresses of the military,� she wrote. “With policies like ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ in place that don’t allow gays to serve openly, getting through my year and a half tour down there was emotionally difficult.� We were her sanctuary, her oasis, and she had taken these gifts to heart. Now she’s f lying reconnaissance f lights over Iraq. And I’m looking at a folded f lag sitting f lat on my desk. I confess to a certain ambivalence when it comes to the American f lag. Having come of age during the ReaganNorth-Cheney-Bush years, I’m deeply skeptical of those who’ve wrapped misguided, bloody policies in the red, white and blue and then called them holy. If the first Gulf War was wrong, the second’s been disastrous in almost every way. Just the same, her f lag touched some part of me that aches for patriotism, that wants desperately to love my country. “If the thought of the war is too much,� she wrote, “don’t think of this f lag as supporting bad things. This f lag, in my opinion, is for all of us who have greater dreams, better dreams for our nation and a better future forward.� I get it now. If we are to be a nation, if we are to fulfill any kind of destiny, we need this f lag to mean something. It has to mean something like we’re only as resilient as the most vulnerable among us. Something like we’re only as strong as our capacity to love and make sacrifices for one another. We need this f lag to mean something more than a Blackberry in every hand and a f lat screen in every living room. Another aviator, the great French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupery, once wrote that “Love does not consist in gazing at each other but in looking together in the same direction.� I’m not saying that’s easy. Looking together in the same direction requires patience, grace, commitment, tenacity, love. But nothing else will do. Nothing else gets us moving toward meaningful health care reform or effective action on global warming. Nothing else fixes our broken school systems or our corporate-sponsored election cycles. Maybe it’s time to turn off all those pundits making millions on our misery. Maybe it’s time to turn to the f lag again. Maybe it’s time for all of us—gay, straight, black, white, Anglo, Latino, theist, atheist—to look together in the same direction. Toward the future of America. But it’s going to take a lot of love. The greater dreams always do.

VERY TIME Anne Smith washes her kids’ grass-stained sports uniforms, her agapanthus gets watered too. It’s a time-saving, water-conserving trick that may one day become commonplace as more and more people discover the benefits of recycling household “graywater.� That dirty water laden with detergent, hair and other unmentionable cooties that drain from our washing machines, bathroom sinks and showers classifies as graywater, and it makes up more than half the average household’s water waste. Since 1928, graywater has been flushed into city sewers along with the “blackwater� that drains from toilets and kitchen sinks, sent to a water treatment center on Bay Street and later expelled

into the ocean via Monterey Bay. But with droughts, heightened awareness of water scarcity and a new emphasis on conservation, the fate of gray wastewater is beginning to change. And Santa Cruz, not surprisingly, is at the forefront of a growing movement to legally divert household graywater away from the sewer system and into the soil, where it can provide moisture for trees and other plants and recharge long-depleted water tables. In January, the California Building Standards Commission adopted a new plumbing code legalizing graywater reuse in residential buildings, a breakthrough that gives residents the go-ahead to rig up their own systems. Proponents say it can save money in the long run, relieve overstressed

septic systems and conserve the life-giving element. Most importantly, perhaps, it can help change the way people think about their water use. “Instead of calling it wastewater and shipping it downstream, graywater [reuse] goes with the idea that we all live downstream,â€? says Ken Foster of Terra Nova Ecological Landscaping, a member of the Central Coast Graywater Alliance. “In nature there is no such thing as waste. One thing’s waste is another’s food. Graywater reuse transforms our concept of waste.â€? Unlike blackwater, graywater is safe and abundant enough to use for irrigating landscape and certain types of garden plants (it’s not recommended for root crops, for example). ¨ # If done right, the benefits can be manifold.

For the Smith family, a laundry-tolandscape system that directs laundry water around the garden via a pipe connected to their washing machine provided an invaluable solution to the nightmares caused by an overstressed septic system. Diverting thousands of gallons monthly from a saturated leach field in their case has meant a savings of $30,000–$40,000, the cost of hooking up to the city septic system or installing a new leach field. Thanks to the recent legalization of graywater diversion systems, landscapers and conservationists throughout Santa Cruz are preparing workshops and classes to teach folks how to install laundry-to-landscape systems that are up to code, and the Soquel Creek Water District has recently approved a $75 rebate for laundry-to-landscape systems, effective this July.

Mother Earth Knows Best All laundry-to-landscape systems, whether simple or complex, rely on one fundamental component: the soil’s natural “food web.� The microbes and insects that live in soil act as a biological filtration community, breaking down and using as fuel the microscopic bacteria, potential pathogens, lint and hair that come out in the wash water. Conveniently, these fungal microbes and insects that love to eat nasty things thrive in wood chip mulch, a garden’s best friend. Although their powers are great, these microbes are not skilled at breaking down chemicals, so laundry-to-landscape

users should refrain from washing their socks in Clorox and should use only ecologically safe detergents. Don’t let your disappointing experiment with all-natural plant-derived antiperspirant deter you; there are many graywaterfriendly detergents on the market with effective cleaning ingredients like papaya enzyme. Anne Smith vouches for them: according to her, they “work great.� Graywater has not been granted above-ground rights, and legally it must never see the light of day. At least two inches of wood chip or other mulch is recommended to cover the areas where graywater is expelled into the soil. It is also unsanitary to allow graywater to pool on the ground’s surface or to run it through a sprinkler system to spray the leaves of your salad greens, since these methods don’t allow proper filtration. Plus, that would just be nasty. And that’s not what graywater’s about.

According to Bryan, the simplest branch drain laundry-to-landscape system can save almost 4,000 gallons of water a month used for landscape purposes during the irrigation season (May through October). Watering your plants with perfectly good drinking water that has gone through a costly purification process seems crazy when graywater is an optional source—almost as absurd as flushing your waste with the same purified drinking water. More elaborate laundry-to-landscape irrigation systems like the one that keeps Smith’s agapanthus satiated have a materials cost of around $400–$500. Golden Love of Love’s Gardens is the mastermind behind Smith’s irrigation system. The garden is set around a bocce ball court, with an expanse of black piping running its length beneath the mulch, and with 28 release valves that can be opened or closed to release the water. The most elaborate systems,

incorporating bathroom sinks and showers into the graywater flow, require a permit and an approved backflow valve to prevent graywater from flowing back into the sink or shower whence it came.

A Case-by-Case Solution Laundry-to-landscape systems are a great start to graywater reuse, but they’re not the end-all solution to water scarcity in Santa Cruz. Toby Goddard, the city’s water conservation manager, encourages citizens to explore the options that the state’s liberalized use of graywater may present in their own yards but to remember that it is one of many measures a resident can take to conserve water. Reducing yard size, using low-volume sprinkler nozzles and weather-based irrigation systems and planting more shade trees are other methods Goddard lists to cut down on landscape water usage. After all, as Sherry Bryan of Ecology Action says, the point is to reduce along with reusing and recycling. “Just like you would reduce your overall energy consumption before installing solar panels,â€? she says, “you should reduce your overall water consumption before pumping all your graywater into your landscape.â€? 0 B] 5`SS\ O AQS\S ¨

Freeform In his own writing he has gone from a technically skilled if formally conventional verse to a distinctive style of prose poem that looks simple on the surface but is in fact very tricky and idiosyncratic. In Young’s hands the simplest observations can open into unexpected depths, often revealing a spiritual dimension in the most seemingly ordinary phenomena: kids playing soccer, the cooking of dinner, a mockingbird’s song, moonlight through the redwoods, a wild mushroom. Putting his own mark on a form that goes back through Baudelaire in the 19th century all the way to the ancient Chinese masters he reveres, Young has earned a lot of respect in the literary world and a certain amount of controversy as well for trafficking in an oxymoron: prose poetry. In the prose poem, absent the formal framework of lined verse, Young says, “You have to be much more subtle� to create the kinds of linguistic tension and compression characteristic of poetry, “and it’s more difficult to achieve.� But that’s one of the things he likes about the form. “And there’s something charming about writing poetry that some people don’t think are poems,� he adds, laughing. Asked about the slim material rewards of poetry, he replied, “If you’re an artist, your reward is just being able to do the work.� And yet paradoxically, at this peak of his artistic accomplishment, he has less

and less time for writing amid his other duties. He laughs this off, too. “I feel like I had my retirement in the first half of my life, and now when everyone else is retiring I’m starting to work. “But also at this age if I don’t write every day, or even every month, I don’t feel like I’m depriving the world of some aspect of my genius. It’s not as important to me right now as teaching kids and doing these civic and educational things. I get a lot of pleasure out of it, and after working at this for 40 years I know a lot and don’t mind giving it back.� Printing, says Young, has been essential to his development as a poet: “If I have written anything of value, a lot of it is because I became a printer. It allowed me to think about poems as objects, as things, and encouraged me to think of poems as something made, where you would set it in type and feel it in your hands; and the fact that it’s physical, just the fact that you’re using your body, is a real corrective to staying in your head.� He told me that when he started out he didn’t expect much. “I didn’t know what to expect. From then until the first act takes the stage in mid-April, the web buzzes with cheers, jeers and all manner of unsolicited hipster analysis on whether the three-day, 140-plus-act festival is worth the $300 price tag. MGMT, Grizzly Bear and the XX will win over the indie rock crowd, while Devo qualifies as this year’s WTF band. Them Crooked Vultures, featuring Dave Grohl and no less than Zeppelin bass god John Paul Jones, will abuse any amplifiers left intact from Coheed and Cambria’s set. Screenwriter Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast) is sensibly trying to do a Wicked on the famous tale, complete with rivalry between witchy queens: the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) and the ghostly yet sugary White Queen (Anne Hathaway). The now 19-year-old Alice (Mia Wasikowska) is meant to quest for good in “Underland,� a place she misremembered as Wonderland. I’m a helpless Burton fan, but the colors here aren’t state of the art, and compared to Coraline’s solitude and thoughtfulness the finale turns out to be familiar dragon slaying; ultimately, it’s not just Alice who has been here before. In the future, Earthling mercenaries are shipped to the planet Pandora, where 9-foottall, blue-skinned noble savages called Na’vi live in a phosphorescent forest full of saurian beasts. Jake (Sam Worthington) is the paraplegic brother of a dead soldier hooked up to a Na’vi shell; the program is under the direction of a chainsmoking biologist (Sigourney Weaver). While it is a maxim of screenwriting that the plot ought to be the longest distance between two points, James Cameron’s terrible script for this putative end-of-thedecade experience really overworks the principle. The politics play it both ways; letting us swoon over the military hardware and still lament for the plundered forests. After an hour, the drugs wear off, and the appeal of synthespianism starts to drag; motion capture isn’t exactly motion release (compare the synthetic Weaver to the real thing), and the cobbled-together story

He passed on the risible coiffures endemic in director Louis Leterrier’s vision of the ancient world, the land of a thousand frightwigs. Hairiest of them all is Liam Neeson’s Zeus, in shiny tinfoil armor last seen in Excalibur—glittering 3-D eyesore like a f licker postcard. This glowing apparition stares down his evil brother Hades (Ralph Fiennes): nothing says “tension� like two furry, heavily mascaraed men giving each other the eye. Your kid will agree that any movie with Medusa in it can’t be a total loss. Her backstory is told by Perseus’ guardian angel Io (Gemma Arterton); Arterton provides not only the movie’s too-rare girly-action, but Clash’s one nod to the pathos of Ovid. Stieg Larsson’s book is the hottest thing going in mysteries right now, and thankfully, director Niels Arden Oplev and screenwriters Nikolaj Arcel and Rasmus Heisterberg recognized that more important than any of the hype swirling around the book is the protagonist at its center, Lisbeth Salander. She is the girl with the dragon tattoo, and she’s maybe the best fictional character to come around yet this century. Swedish actress Noomi Rapace is absolutely incredible in her ability to bring Lisbeth to life. She is a force of nature, pure and simple. Lisbeth is hired to dig up dirt on Mikael (Michael Nyqvist) but ends up helping him investigate the disappearance many years ago of Harriet, heiress to a creepy, feuding family

of millionaires. Though it may use the U.S. title, the movie doesn’t shy away from the book’s unrelenting critique of the violence that society allows men to perpetuate against women, and though the scenes with certain unsavory characters may have been cut down in number, they are still surprisingly graphic. Luckily, Lisbeth is womankind’s ultimate revenge fantasy come true—sooner or later, her boots are gonna walk all over absolutely everyone. (SP) 5@33<03@5 (R; 107 min.) Accidentally transported with them is 24-year-old Jacob (the hilarious Clark Duke), a depressed middle-aged-man-intraining whose life may depend on the events of the night to come. Certainly the funniest and grimiest film since The Hangover, but Hot Tub Time Machine’s

editing is ruthless, almost to the point of resembling a comingattractions reel. Rather than looking like a frenzied mess, however, it is more like there was some brilliant four-hour version that was cut down to a ragged but right shape. Director Steve Pink scripted High Fidelity; Cusack and Corddry do things here that you will still be laughing about 10 years from now: examples being Corddry’s violent unplugging of himself from a hospital bed or Cusack’s monologue about the day life went wrong for him, a tale as funny as the story in Gremlins about the Santa who ruined Christmas. approach, but Brendan is more interested in the arrival of a fellow artist to the monastery: the aged brother Aidan (Mick Lally), who carries with him the last treasure from his island of Iona: the book which later will be known as the Book of Kells. When Aidan sends the boy out into the wolf-haunted forest to seek pigments, the boy encounters a fairy named Aisling (Christen Mooney). What’s stressed here is art as the hope of civilization, representing something more than life.The love of nature also radiates from this movie; directors Tomm Moore, Nora Twomey and the rest of the artists at Cartoon Saloon have indeed made something that’s beautiful yet never airy-fairy. Director Marco Bellocchio charts the story of Ida Dalser (the lovely, monotonous Giovanna

Mezzogiorno), a beautician who sacrificed everything for Mussolini (Filippo Timi). It is thought that Dalser married Il Duce, and there’s evidence he acknowledged their child. After World War I, the luckless Dalser becomes a state secret, interned at a series of mental hospitals. And her son, also named Benito, is spirited away to captivity at a grim boy’s school. Ida can only watch Il Duce in newsreels. Was Mussolini, then, cinema itself ? A seductive deception, no deeper than a screen? Turbulent music heightens the operatic side of the story: Carlo Crivelli’s score sounds like Philip Glass and Bernard Herrmann having a fistfight while going over a waterfall. For most of the film, Ida does two things. She writes letters and she watches movies. Regrettably, the retroness of this drama signals an Italian cinema that, like Ida, looks backward instead of forward. (RvB)

Instead of fighting every single abuse that incited my ire, I chose three to concentrate on: the obscene militarism of the American government, the extreme financial disparities between the rich and poor, and the environmental degradations caused by corporations and corporate culture. Since then, my crusading energy has been more focused and effective, and my general mood has brightened. I recommend you consider a similar change, Leo. In the hope of replenishing the population in captivity, they captured every last one of the 22 remaining wild condors. Painstaking efforts gradually yielded results, and today there are 348 birds, including 187 in the wild.
