On Saturday afternoon, the campus was in a state of nervous anticipation—of what, no one was sure. Rumors circulated that there was going to be another gathering that evening. Rumor became reality. As we stood on the commons, waiting for something to happen, someone near me, looking over at the ROTC building, got the idea to burn it down. That sounded like fun. There was a motorcycle parked nearby, and a couple of us thought, “Gee, you know, we could siphon some gas out of the tank and splatter it all over the building.� There was a dumpster next to the ROTC building. Someone else thought we could get the trash in it going with a rag soaked in gasoline from the motorcycle, and then push it into the building to see if that would do the job. I had not been what you’d call a radicalized student, but in less than 24 hours I was swept up in the political current, concocting the burning of buildings. While we were thinking, others were acting, and the fire department was called out. The crowd tried hard to cut the fire hose they had placed on the field next to the ROTC building. It was pretty tough stuff, but we pulled off some slashes. There was a photographer present. By the look of his camera, he was a professional. He was trying to take pictures of what we were doing when some of the students struggled with him for the camera, got him to the ground, and took it. An older woman saw this and cried out, “Let’s keep it calm. Please, let’s keep it calm.� I was moved by the pain in her face. I had never experienced such violence before, but it seemed maybe she had. A line of people, the length of the field, held onto the fire hose, trying to keep it from the firefighters as we continued trying to cut it. It was heavy and we were clumsy, so our efforts were ineffectual. The crowd, by now a mob, decided to march downtown, and by “decided� I mean that they followed whoever had the loudest voice and the most aggressive manner. A fellow I knew, who had literally starved himself to get out of the draft, was leading the crowd downtown, creating a path of destruction as he went. Some looted parking meters. Others threatened cars that were in the wrong place at the wrong time. One, with a family inside, was close enough for me to catch the mom’s eye. She hurriedly locked her door and had her children do the same. The fear on her face startled me. That night I returned to campus and saw that the ROTC building was now in full blaze. Somehow, somebody had had

success in the effort. For several hours, everyone there stared, mesmerized by the fire. When it was nothing more than a pile of burnt rubble, we were herded back to the dorms. A group of us got caught in The Pit, the central area of one of the dorm complexes. Jammed together and fearful of more of the tear gas that had been directed our way that afternoon, we could have succumbed to paranoia. Instead, guitars and drums appeared and we partied. All night long helicopters flew by. They were loud, and their searchlights in the dorm windows kept us awake. We thought we were under siege, but it seemed more like a siege in a toy war. Cowboys and Indians—this is how we spoke of it.

All of a sudden we were running again, presumably just ahead of the next barrage of gas vapors. But then I heard pinging and something whoosh by my head. I looked to my left and saw a car window shatter. Sunday morning a convoy of trucks and army tanks—tanks!—moved slowly down the main street of Kent. Now we were calling it the Boy Scout Jamboree, but it was nothing of the sort. It was the National Guard, our citizen soldiers, the ones we call to action during national emergencies. But we were just America’s kids. How could this be a national emergency? In fact, while we waited outside of Kent Hall to hear the outcome of the negotiations taking place that afternoon, some of us girls flirted with the Guardsmen. They were from Akron, only 10 miles from Kent. One of them was cute. As I put flowers in the muzzle of his 3

n the evening, a group of us conducted a sit-in at an intersection near the entrance to campus. For what seemed like hours, we waited for an official who, we had been told, would come and talk to us. Then I noticed Guardsmen at the back edges of the crowd, quietly surrounding us. Others noticed it, too. Mayhem again. We’d run so much over the weekend that the feeling of being chased became a feeling of being hunted. At one point, we’d actually stampeded a Cyclone fence down because it blocked the only way out. Unarmed, the thought of fighting never arose. A rally had been scheduled for Monday, and despite an injunction, it took place. I don’t know what we expected to come out of it or how we were planning to resolve the situation. I went down to the commons when all of a sudden we were running again, presumably just ahead of the next barrage of gas vapors. But then I heard pinging and something whoosh by my head. I looked to my left and saw a car window shatter. I looked to my right and saw a student fall. I heard someone yell, “They’re shooting! Get down!� I felt something hit my leg. I dove under a bush. Panic was in the air. Though everyone was crying and calling out to their friends, a strange silence had settled on the whole area. It was then that I wanted to shoot whoever was behind me because that’s where the National Guard was, where Nixon was, where my country was, and I hated them. I wanted to kill and I knew

I could. If I’d had a gun in my hand, I would have been shooting blindly, I’m certain of it, and that moment stands by itself, separate from all else. Turning, I stared in the direction of the onslaught, but the only thing I could see was the movie screen of my mind. On it was footage of me in third or fourth grade, standing with all of my classmates, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. But now, suddenly, I had been stripped of everything, of all those beliefs that had protected me. I watched one of the four die. Some people were stooping over her. A guy wiped out her mouth, flinging pink and white matter from his hand. Maybe she had vomited, or maybe it was flesh and guts, I wasn’t sure. He tried to give her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. I watched, but it was not a person I was watching. It was a biological organism. It was a body straining hard to breathe, or maybe that was the futile breaths of her rescuer, I wasn’t sure. He lifted his head and said, “She’s gone.� My first thought was that she’d fainted. Then I understood she was dead. In a daze, I also watched as a friend of mine, Scott, was taken away on a stretcher. He had been shot in the neck. Those of us left behind after the ambulances drove off tried to have some kind of civil discussion about what to do next, but it was no use. We disbanded. A bulletin went out over a loudspeaker telling everyone to leave. We were to take only as many belongings as we could carry and go home. No one wanted to get shot at again, so orders were peacefully 3 !

followed. Cars were packed. My friend Wendy and I got a ride together. Once we got out of town, we hitchhiked the rest of the way to our parents’ homes in New Jersey. That was it for the year at Kent. Campus closed. Exams were sent through the mail.

y 1998 I had become a respectable wife, mother, and small business owner. That year my son Austin and I took a road trip across the country, which included a visit to Kent so that I could see the May 4 Memorial and he could see the place so significant in his mom’s life. It had been almost 30 years since I’d been there, and at first nothing looked the same. Then, as my mind adjusted, I began to recognize many of my old haunts. After a nostalgic lunch at Jerry’s Diner, where I’d worked the graveyard shift, we drove up to campus. I had been a part of what happened there, yet I felt a stranger to its memorial. Uncertain of the way, I led my son tentatively along the path leading to the plaza. There were granite tributes to the dead here in Ohio, and daffodils had been planted in remembrance of those lost in Vietnam, one for each of the fallen. The unyielding rock, the yellow blossoms that came to life each spring— these symbols, together here, linked the student and the soldier in the ideals of their youth. I caught sight of some pamphlets and took one. It included a recounting of the weekend’s events so similar to my own recollection that I felt I’d been consulted on its writing. Suddenly, studying the pamphlet’s map of the site, I did not feel so alone in my pilgrimage. As I arrived at the spot where I stood when the shooting stopped, I looked at the map’s 13 circled letters, A through M, denoting the locations where the nine wounded and four dead had fallen. How close I had been! Now, at the 40-year mark, am I the only one who wonders if black squirrels romp among the 58,175 daffodils on a hill in Kent, Ohio? Can my memories be woven with others’ into a cohesive story of innocence, rage, sorrow, and healing? Or are they a heart-shaped balloon, cut loose, drifting, lifting, floating higher and higher into the atmosphere? Someone sees it. She points. The day goes on.

AST WEDNESDAY, regulars of the Santa Cruz Downtown Farmers Market wandered into a dazzling feast of new sights and smells. On tree-shaded aisles occupied the previous week by parked cars, the aromas of rotisserie chicken and hot pizza mingled while shave-ice vendors hawked the flavors of the tropics. Next to an array of colorful dishware by master ceramicist Mattie Leeds, the knife sharpener in his thick apron joked with visitors. The strains of bluegrass by Harmony Grits drifted off the new stage, background to the hiss of the Lulu Carpenter’s espresso machine and the chatter at information booths and the fishmonger’s. And anchoring it all, of course, were three aisles of farm-fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers, the bustling heart of the market. Last week the Santa Cruz Downtown Farmers Market gave itself a 20th birthday gift by launching a longawaited expansion on Earth Day. Now stretching from

Lincoln Street to Cathcart, the vibrant Wednesday afternoon destination for local and regionally harvested organic products has been enlarged by 20 purveyors, live music, valet services for bicycles and for retrieval of purchases, an arts and crafts section and an organic food court. The new section of the market fills the parking lot at Cathcart and Cedar behind the University Town Center and hosts informational booths representing nonprofits such as Slow Food, Seafood Watch, Save our Shores, LifeLab and Ecology Action, to name just a few. And yes, there are expanded restroom facilities and just plain more space in which to move around, hang out and do some serious shopping. For the past nine years Nesh Dhillon has been operations manager for the Santa Cruz Certified Farmers Markets, a job for which he admits that “deep breathing skills� are a prime requirement. He says the new expansion has been building for years. “We are trying

to have a diverse shopping experience for the consumer,â€? he says, “so we have new arts and crafts booths, soap vendors, a permanent massage booth and artisan booths selling prepared food like sauerkraut and jams.â€? Two or three new farmstands will also be integrated into the mix, Dhillon says, adding variety to the fruits and vegetables. For would-be locavores, good news comes in the form of several regional producers who are bringing in items not available within our immediate foodshed. Old Creek Ranch, based in Cayucos (near San Luis Obispo), will bring in pasture-raised, hormone-free beef, lamb, goat and pork, as well as citrus fruits and avocados. Massa Organics, based in the Chico area, will offer certified organic brown rice and almonds. And on the prepared foods front, RoliRoti’s Thomas Odermatt, a third-generation butcher/ chef headquartered in the Bay Area, will be roasting rotisserie chickens on-site and selling them by the half and by the whole along with roasted potatoes. ¨ %

Growing Trend Across the nation, farmers markets have blossomed in every conceivable locale, from Memphis, Tenn. (in 2007 named the United States’ most obese city) to Fairbanks, Alaska (one of its northernmost). These days, markets have star power on their side. Not only does every single chef on the Food Channel make a point of establishing his or her street cred with footage of delighted strolls through farmers markets, but political animals are getting in on the act as well. In September, First Lady Michelle Obama helped push through permits for a farmers market just in front of the White House lawn, smack in the middle of the federal district. The rapid proliferation of farmers markets is staggering. The USDA estimates that in 1994 there were approximately 1,750 farmers markets nationwide. Today there are more than 5,000. That 300 percent increase

means that direct marketing of freshly harvested farm products is not only wildly popular, it’s becoming an important source of income for small farmers—even if it’s rarely enough. “Most farmers I know are doing more than just farmers markets,â€? says Gail Feenstra, a food systems analyst at UC-Davis. “They’re looking at other marketing venues that don’t include quite as much investment in terms of time and gas and so on. But farmers markets continue to grow ,and I think they probably will for a while because there’s just so much demand out there for local food,â€? she says. “It’s way more than it used to be even five years ago.â€? In this area, says Dhillon, “Most farmers sell through CSAs, direct to restaurants and at farmers markets, and obviously most profits are made at farmers markets.â€? For that opportunity, market members pay an annual fee. Dhillon says it varies, but it’s usually about $130 per year, plus ¨ '

Size Matters Naturally, California was on the cusp of the movement. Markets started popping up around the state 30 years ago. In 1990, Santa Cruz joined the party. “So we were really on the forefront,� says Dhillon. Of the five markets in the SCCFM family, which includes the Westside, Live Oak, Scotts Valley and Felton markets, the Downtown Market is the eldest sibling. Now with 70 vendors, it’s comparable in size to the two largest markets on the Monterey Bay, the 82member Monterey Farmers Market and the 80-vendor Aptos Farmers Market held Sundays at Cabrillo. Dhillon credits two dynamics— pressure from the farming community (Exhibit A being the long waiting list of farms trying to get into the market) and consumers feeling crowded—for creating last week’s growth spurt. “And I gotta say,� he chuckles, “everybody has been so supportive—the city, the Chamber of Commerce, the business community, the City Council.� Making the expansion all the easier was the fact that the city was already acclimated to having the Wednesday market here. “They were used to having traffic and parking issues,� he says, “so it was a logical move to simply expand and add the next parking lot.� Rebecca King of Garden Variety Cheeses, for whom farmers markets are the primary sales outlet, looks forward to having a bigger booth for her handmade sheep cheeses and lamb sausage. “I’m excited about the larger market—more customers and more places to sit and eat,� she says. “It is more appealing to those who are really here to shop.� Live Earth Farm owner Tom Broz agrees that the expansion “was a great thing just waiting to happen. The farmers market is really central to Santa Cruz,� he says. “While we have a large CSA, the farmers market is a great way to bring our food direct to the consumer.� For his part, Dhillon is thrilled with the blend of sensory experiences available at the up-sized venue. “There will finally be a music series, like at the Westside market,� he points out. Arts and crafts booths will appear courtesy a pilot arrangement with the Tannery

Arts Center (it will be evaluated at the end of the year). As far as the exuberant hippie fringe—which on the first day of the new farmers market took up position at the parking lot behind Petroglyph, across from Jack’s—Dhillon remains philosophical. “The patchouli drummers just go with the Santa Cruz scene,� he says. As for the future? “To launch into the very top level of national markets, we need to launch into food education,� he says. “So we’ve begun working with Ecology Action and Slow Food Santa Cruz—that’s just part of a whole wave of exciting events planned for downtown.� At its most basic, though, the farmers market is a vibrant part of the local community, and one that defies the usual trends. “It speaks volumes that in times where most things are contracting, we’re actually expanding,� says Dhillon, “and it’s because of the success of the farmers markets. It’s amazing that we’re able to do this.�

Greg Nolten has been selling wines at the Felton farmers market for the past five years, gaining additional visibility for his Zayante Vineyards brand. “We get a lot of tourists in the summer,â€? he says, “and locals see that we grow our own grapes—and they like that.â€? for a farmers market wine booth, agrees that the farmers markets are “a great thing for local winegrowers. I’m definitely planning on participating in the downtown market,� he says. He admits, however, that “it’s a bummer we can’t give samples of the wine. In other states they have started allowing samples—so there’s hope for the future.� Limited hope, as it turns out. In Los Angeles, the main farmers market is served by adjacent beer and wine bars with their own licenses. Last September the state of Maryland allowed the first winery to participate in a farmers market and offer tastes. The process is cumbersome, however, and slow to gain legislative approval. In Washington State a recent initiative came before the legislature to allow a pilot program for winetasting at farmers markets. A target number of wineries would be able to offer limited tastings at markets during the summer months under strict controls, such as size

of samples, amount per customer and a requirement that food be present at the tasting table. “We have a lot of small family-run wineries now in the state, and we wanted to broaden the business setting in which we can operate,� says winemaker Marty Clubb, president of the Washington Wine Institute, the wine industry’s lobbying group in Olympia. Unfortunately the initiative did not get to a vote during the most recent session. “There was support for the initiative, Clubb tells Santa Cruz Weekly, “but there were big budget battles ahead of our bill, and they took precedence. So our initiative fell off the table.� Clubb will resubmit the initiative during the next legislative session at the start of 2011. “I think this will happen,� he says, “but we have to wait until the next go-round.� Here’s to California following Washington’s lead and pouring on the flavor at the market. 0

During Thursday’s kickoff event, traffic will be diverted from Pacific Avenue to allow room for three stages and more than a dozen groups dancing 15-minute sets. The sparks will literally fly around 8:30pm in a grand finale of the fire dancers of “Nocturnal Sunshine and Friends� and the glow-inthe-dark hula hoopers of “Hoopalights.� As part of Santa Cruz’s third year celebrating National Dance Week, 15 groups will be spontaneously erupting into dance on sidewalks, streets and other public places as part of the “Dance in Unlikely Places� program. Keep an eye out for spurts of samba and live drummers from groups like the 30-strong “Dance of Brazil� or impromptu flourishes of ballet by “Ballet Wassa Wassa.� The contagious dance frenzy is shared with the community in the “Out of the Studio Into the Streets� program, where pedestrians can dance up a storm with instruction by local dance teachers. 97<2 =4 0:C35@/AA MAY IS BLUEGRASS MONTH—a time when musicians, record companies and fans all do their part to honor one of the most iconic styles of American music. Established in the late ’80s to promote awareness of bluegrass music, it now also serves to kick off bluegrass-related festivities that continue throughout summertime, and is observed the world over by a dedicated community of enthusiasts. The Santa Cruz Bluegrass Fair was conceived as a way to represent Bluegrass Month on a local level, says Mike McKinley, the fair’s coordinator for the past 24 years. It’s happened each year since 1987, which, according to him, makes it the longest-running celebration of Bluegrass Month in the world—that’s right, kids, in the world. The fair is always open to new ideas, and in the past has tried things like incorporating a farmers market. This year there will be food, crafts, raffles and prizes. Of course, there will also be a great lineup of bands like Mountain Drive, the Family Hogwash and longtime participants Harmony Grits. A synthespian made completely out of Black Angus beef, Sam Worthington demonstrates his ability to suck every touch of humor in a movie, so that no matter how ridiculous things get no one laughs during his scenes. He passed on the risible coiffures endemic in director Louis Leterrier’s vision of the ancient world, the land of a thousand fright wigs. Hairiest of them all is Liam Neeson’s Zeus, in shiny tinfoil armor last seen in Excalibur—glittering 3-D eyesore like a f licker postcard. This glowing apparition stares down his evil brother Hades (Ralph Fiennes): nothing says “tension� like two furry, heavily mascaraed men giving each other the eye. Your kid will agree that any movie with Medusa in it can’t be a total loss. Her backstory is told by Perseus’ guardian angel Io (Gemma Arterton); Arterton provides not only the movie’s too-rare girly-action, but Clash’s one nod to the pathos of Ovid. (Unrated; 158 min.) Stieg Larsson’s book is the hottest thing going in mysteries right now, and thankfully, director Niels Arden Oplev and screenwriters Nikolaj Arcel and Rasmus Heisterberg recognized that more important than any of the hype swirling around the book is the protagonist at its center, Lisbeth Salander. She is the girl with the dragon tattoo, and she’s maybe the best fictional character to come around yet this century. Swedish actress Noomi Rapace is absolutely incredible in her ability to bring Lisbeth to life. She is a force of nature, pure and simple. Lisbeth is hired to dig up dirt on Mikael (Michael Nyqvist) but ends up helping him investigate the disappearance many years ago of Harriet, heiress to a creepy, feuding family

of millionaires. Though it may use the U.S. title, the movie doesn’t shy away from the book’s unrelenting critique of the violence that society allows men to perpetuate against women, and though the scenes with certain unsavory characters may have been cut down in number, they are still surprisingly graphic. Luckily, Lisbeth is womankind’s ultimate revenge fantasy come true—sooner or later, her boots are gonna walk all over absolutely everyone. (SP) 6=B BC0 B7;3 ;/167<3 (R; 100

min.) Sublime, but not dainty. Due to a wormhole, observed by a hot tub repairman or a Time Lord or something (Chevy Chase), three idiots (Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry and the ever soulful John Cusack) are transported back to their happier past at a ski resort in 1986. Accidentally transported with them is 24-year-old Jacob (the hilarious Clark Duke), a depressed middle-aged-man-intraining whose life may depend on the events of the night to come. Certainly the funniest and grimiest film since The Hangover, but Hot Tub Time Machine’s editing is ruthless, almost to the point of resembling a comingattractions reel. Rather than looking like a frenzied mess, however, it is more like there was some brilliant four-hour version that was cut down to a ragged but right shape. Director Steve Pink scripted High Fidelity; Cusack and Corddry do things here that you will still be laughing about 10 years from now: examples being Corddry’s violent unplugging of himself from a hospital bed or Cusack’s monologue about the day life went wrong for him, a tale as funny as the story in Gremlins about the Santa who ruined Christmas. serious rage in it, and it strains to make the 90-minute mark. David Duchovny—as ever, wistful, moony and vaguely horny—is the father of a fake nuclear family dropped into an exclusive yet bland community. There, the only life that goes on takes place around the spa and the golf course. They stealthmarket products to the neighbors, and the locals are left to struggle to pay to “keep up with the “Joneses.� Cast against type, Gary Cole is the tragic sucker next door, married to a venal Mary K.–style saleswoman; she’s played by the muchmissed Glenn Headly, who does all the film’s comedic heavy lifting. The product placement director on The Joneses got a serious workout, too, so the cargo-stroking is nonstop even while the film seeks to criticize this epic highend consumerism. Another problem is Demi Moore, once a concrete kitten, now a polyethylene cougar. Watching the emotions inch across her beautifully toned and lifeless face, one wishes they could have reunited Duchovny with Gillian Anderson for a different sort of team-up. Director Derrick Borte makes this luxury community out of the richest parts of suburban Atlanta and Spokane; the pale light and depressing ostentation add to the general bad mood induced by this indie. Dave, a homebrewed costumed vigilante (Aaron Johnson), meets up with real professionals in the field: a Batman and Robin–esque father-and-daughter team (Nicolas Cage, and the excellent Chloe Moretz, who was the wise little girl in (500) Days of Summer). Entertaining in parts, but director Matthew Vaughn has no feeling for the romance and mystery and vigilante lore: the movie has a

Cage carries the movie’s ambiguity deftly—he’s enough of a serious comic book reader that he knows it’s a dreadful thing when a father bends his child to revenge. Bloody-minded little girls (thank heaven for them) may like Moritz. It’s nuts to call Kick-Ass the next Watchmen. The slamming violence and the dullard noms de guerre these superheroes pick for themselves show a comic-book tradition at the end of a line. (RvB) :/ ;7AA7=< (R; 125 min.) Che (Benjamin Bratt) is an S.F. Muni conductor, a hobby mechanic and an excon, single-parenting his son, Jesse ( Jeremy Ray Valdez). What he doesn’t know is that Jesse has a secret life—and a boyfriend who lives in St. Francis Wood. Che’s outright rage at his son’s sexuality is tempered by the attentions of his lovely new neighbor Lena (Erika Alexander). Any positive representation of Aztlan has to be applauded; the scenes of highly polished lowriders gliding

through the Mission make their own statement of beauty and pride. Bratt is the definition of moviestar gravity: a man doing nothing but thinking about stuff and making it look interesting. The film, then, is a celebration of San Francisco. Problem is, San Francisco may be San Francisco, but it is still a city. So some hard-to-credit idealization mixes uneasily with real, street-level violence. (And it’s one thing to make a Sundance movie, another to openly filch a scene from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.) La Mission is a kind of overexemplified view of San Francisco as a city of healing and refuge: a vision of a place where everyone is wounded, and almost everyone heals each other. identified, sometimes not. They’re arranged by cuteness, color and shape rather than by districts of the ocean, as in the sturdy zonal structure of Earth. Bruno Coulais, the rising composer whose work was key to the success of The Secret of Kells and Coraline, is adept with musical scoring: the organ is never too heavy and the harp is never too light. You’ll want to miss most of the text; because this is Disney, the anthropomorphic angle is heavy; narrator Pierce Brosnan salutes the ancient wisdom of a sheepshead wrasse, the smoochiness of a walrus and the smiling face of our friend the Great White Shark. Oceans’ cuteness is, you know, for the kids; it’s moments to clutch like a blanket when seeing the bottomless appetites underwater: a horrorsequence of a school of sardines under Scud attack by plummeting cormorants, frigate birds picking off a beachful of baby tortoises as if they were popcorn and a vicious crab/langouste bout that’s as bad as any streetfight. ravishing Irish cartoon about their national treasure, the Book of Kells, an 1,300year-old illuminated manuscript. Young Brendan (voiced by Evan McGuire) is a monk at his uncle’s abbey at Kells in ninthcentury Meath. The merciless Viking raiders approach, but Brendan is more interested in the arrival of a fellow artist at the monastery: the aged brother Aidan (Mick Lally), who carries with him the last treasure from his island of Iona: the book which later will be known as the Book of Kells. When Aidan sends the boy out into the wolf-haunted forest to seek pigments, the boy encounters a fairy named Aisling (Christen Mooney). What’s stressed here is art as the hope of civilization, representing something more than life.The love of nature also radiates from this movie; directors Tomm Moore, Nora Twomey and the rest of the artists at Cartoon Saloon have indeed made something that’s beautiful yet never airy-fairy.
