that freight business will increase and a tourist-shlepping “dinner train from Capitola to Davenport will succeed. Should the business plan fail, the company could pull out of the county, leaving the tracks to rust and the RTC with 32 miles of property that used to make money. Even then, however, the RTC could use an age-old option called “railbanking that would allow it to put off maintenance but maintain ownership until a new train operator is found. Sierra president Dave Magaw says he’s well aware of the risk, but promises his company is “in it for the long haul. Besides the myriad governmental entities talking up the purchase, perhaps no group is drooling more than Santa Cruz County’s cycling community. Their prized Davenport-to-Watsonville rail trail, however, is nowhere in the RTC’s current proposal. Nor is passenger service. Meaningful passenger service such as light-rail, in fact, is estimated to cost hundreds of millions of dollars in track upgrades and expansions and be decades away, if it ever happens. For reference, San Jose’s first light rail line cost about $25 million per mile in 1991. Yet for Micah Posner, head of the green transportation advocacy group People Power, it’ll do. “I feel confident that there will be a [cycling and pedestrian] trail throughout Santa Cruz County, says Posner. “I think passenger service will happen eventually too. The important thing right now is purchasing the rail line.
Last Stop Not everyone is on board with the rail purchase. A group of Aptos residents, most with property lines that abut the rail corridor, is calling itself the Santa Cruz Coalition Against Recreational Rail and represents perhaps the most vocal opponents of the purchase. Critics accuse it of classic NIMBYism, but fiscal conservatives as well as supporters of widening Highway 1 are standing up to the proposal as well. Martin Bryant, a Santa Cruz resident who lives on Morrissey Boulevard, several blocks from the tracks, says the purchase is just one more example of “government spending gone wild. “This is just more money being poured down a rat hole, says Bryant. “I believe in widening Highway 1 because it’s a capital project. We’re putting the cart way before the horse here and we need to step back and re-evaluate. Members of the county’s Metropolitan Transit District are also worried. Though the board officially endorsed the purchase on April 23, the vote was not unanimous, and it came with the stipulation that the RTC promise that no funding would be siphoned from the county bus system’s $7.5 million tax-subsidized budget. MTD member and Scotts Valley Vice Mayor Dene Bustichi voted against supporting the acquisition, and as an RTC member, he says he’s changed his mind “at least a dozen times. “The RTC is anticipating that we are going to be getting funds from passenger rail and renting [train
car] storage space, he says. “One, those funds have yet to materialize. And two, even if there are funds available, we don’t know how much there will be. . . . We’re buying a rail line that doesn’t operate efficiently and doesn’t have enough activity to keep it going. We may have the money to purchase it, but do we have the money to maintain it? Bustichi’s concerns, however, have more to do with the financial wellbeing of the RTC than of Santa Cruz County residents. As owners of the rail corridor, the RTC would have several crisis-averting options if business tanks. And even if Sierra leaves, the tracks fall apart and a bevy of unanticipated costs arise, the losses would be borne by the state taxpayersupported RTC, not the local county government. Whoever ends up with the Santa Cruz Branch Line, most supporters and opponents of the purchase agree that its current use as a minor freight route and a major pedestrian highway for county drunks is a waste of resources. Whether a local agenda will revitalize the tracks into a legitimate transportation corridor or not, Santa Cruz County residents will likely have decades to decide for themselves. “I say let the people own it, Swift says on the bumpy 12-mile-perhour train ride back from Watsonville. “If not now, we could lose it forever.

1=D3@ AB=@G j 53<23@ C<03<23@ Scientific critics were not so kind. The British journal Nature called it “riddled with scientific errors. Others pointed out that Brizendine jumped to conclusions based on tiny samples or very early research, used animal data to discuss human behavior and was sometimes just plain misinformed. She had to remove from the book a claim that women use 20,000 words a day while men use only 7,000. There was harder evidence behind the idea that men and women talk the same amount. The new book is breezy and readable, but has many of the same problems. Critic Emily Bazelon points out in her excellent New York Times review that “You’d never know from reading Brizendine that beneath the sea she blithely sails are depths that researchers have only just begun to chart. Men, Brizendine claims, are rational systemizers and problem solvers who don’t comprehend emotion. Women wail desperately at their mates, “You don’t understand! while the men look blank. Her major citation, Bazelon points out, is a single, very small 2008 brain-scan study of 14 women and 12 men, which found a gender difference in part of a lab experiment that tried to simulate empathy. A great deal of evidence contradicts this tiny study.
Show Some Emotion Do men lack empathy and fail to understand emotion? Psychologist Faye Crosby of UC–Santa Cruz says no. Crosby methodically examined the major, well-designed, scientific studies comparing males and females with regard to empathy, altruism, cooperativeness, nurturance and intimacy. She found “no conclusive evidence to show that men and women differ from one another in the extent to which they attend to and are good at interpersonal relationships. In fact, in a number of the laboratory studies, men responded more strongly internally to emotional stimuli than women, but women show more emotion outwardly. Vanderbilt University psychologist Ann Kring, who studied findings on sex differences in emotion, said in a 1998 issue of The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology that: “It is incorrect to make a blanket statement that women are more emotional than men. It is correct to say that women show their emotions more than men. The Male Brain unfortunately tosses another log onto the media blaze about men and women having their “natural places. Men are the thinkers, the
systemizers, the rationalists. Women are the carers and the feelers. Cambridge University psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen—who wrote the book The Essential Difference (2004)— says that males are good at leadership, decision-making and achievement, while females are suited for “making friends, mothering, gossiping and ‘reading’ your partner. (He has been quoted in The New York Times, in a Newsweek cover story, in a PBS documentary and in many other major media outlets.) Baron-Cohen bases his claims on one study, conducted in his lab in 2000, of day-old infants purporting to show that baby boys looked longer at mobiles, while day-old baby girls looked longer at human faces.
‘The Male Brain’ unfortunately tosses another log onto the media blaze about men and women having their ‘natural’ plaes. Men are the thinkers, the systemizers, the rationalists. Women are the carers and the feelers. Elizabeth Spelke, co-director of Harvard’s Mind, Brain and Behavior Interfaculty Initiative, utterly demolished this study. It has never been replicated, nor has it appeared in a peer-reviewed journal, she reported. Spelke found the study lacked critical controls against experimenter bias and ¨

1 = D 3 @ A B = @ G 53<23@ C<03<23@ was not well-designed. Female and male infants were propped up in a parent’s lap and shown, side-by-side, an active person or an inanimate object. Since newborns can’t hold their heads up independently, their visual preferences could well have been determined by the way their parents held them. Moreover, a long line of literature flat-out contradicts Baron-Cohen’s study, providing evidence that male and female infants tend to respond similarly to people and objects. (Brizendine cites the Baron-Cohen study with nary a nod to the critics.)
Corpus of Evidence Even books that try to boost women can fall into this trap. In The Natural Leadership Talents of Women (2005), Helen E. Fisher claims women have superior relationship abilities because of the larger size of their corpus callosums, the nerve cables connecting the halves of the brain. “So it’s not surprising that women already hold over 60 percent of jobs in the booming service sector of the world economy—another way they lead, she says in the book. But peer-reviewed research finds no difference between men and women in the size of the corpus callosum. If women hold so many jobs in the service sector it’s not because of their brains. Maybe it’s because those jobs tend be lower-level ones that do not lead to the CEO track, where the power is. Steering women toward “caring, relational jobs keeps them out of the highest-level positions. We have to tread lightly in the area of brain research, because of its dismal history. In the Victorian era, scientists packed cadaver skulls of white and black females and white and black males with lead pellets to measure brain size. The larger size of the white male brains, it was argued, meant that white males were the natural lords of creation, while the brains of white and black women and black men were “childlike in comparison. (Researchers used the brains of Hottentots, a group of blacks very small in stature, to rig the results.) We now know, of course, that slightly larger brains do not make men more intelligent than women. But this “science helped keep women out of universities and out of the voting booths for years. Caryl Rivers and Rosalind C. Barnett are authors of ‘Same Difference: How Gender Myths Are Hurting Our Relationships, Our Children and Our Jobs.’

<=B G=C@ BG>71/: >=:7B71/: /<7;/: Robbie Conal, the Los Angeles urban artist famous for his grotesque caricatures of political figures, has grown tired of drawing “ugly old white guys in suits and ties. His softer side is on display at the A. L. Walters Gallery with a collection of artwork focusing on animals. The images of puppies, bunnies and kitties are adorable, though many are not without a satirical edge. Conal will be present at the opening reception on Friday, May 7, 5:30–9pm at the Santa Cruz Art Center, 1001 Center St., Suite 15, Santa Cruz. Exhibit runs through June 6; 831.425.7529.

Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard star in one of the most glamorous films ever made, about a beautiful, wacky call girl and the handsome writer who falls for her. (Plays Thu at Santa Cruz 9.) 6/@@G 0@=E< (R; 102 min.) Probably indefensible but far better than the average customary raging-geezer vigilante movie; we’ve seen this movie before but rarely done this crazy, almost halfway to Gaspar NoÊ in its fatefulness,
grim urban surfaces and misanthropy. Michael Caine as Harry Brown—a cautious, ill old Londoner with little left to lose—gives us everything Caine ever had in his prime: here is both the decency and the steel beneath it. It’s a happy experience watching Brown slowly decide to do what this movie assures him he needs to do. But Harry Brown isn’t dead from the neck up. Director Daniel Barber disguises the manipulation in the film as best he can. He finds pity in the story. (Opens Fri at Nickelodeon.) (RvB)

(PG-13; 104 min.) A new kind of dreadful. Jennifer Lopez plays Zoe, a Manhattan boutique pet-store owner who has decided to have a turkeybaster babe. Shortly after insemination, she meets Stan (Alex O’Loughlin, combining the least interesting elements of Dermot Mulroney and Keanu Reeves). The typical romcom hunk has been greenwashed here; Stan runs a gourmet cheese stall and has a herd of goats upstate. He apparently milks them through osmosis, because the farm goes on the backburner. The movie is a bizarre mix of the bland, expensive and clinical, yet Zoe goes into labor with perfect makeup on and an orchid behind her ear. No relief by Michaela Watkins as Zoe’s best
pal, a bitter housewife; her four kids seem to be raising themselves, like Zoe’s pets and Stan’s goats. (RvB) 4C@@G D3<53/<13

Roman Polanski’s goodlooking thriller follows a British journalist (Ewan McGregor) hired to clean up the memoirs of a British prime minister (Pierce Brosnan) whose previous ghost writer has just turned up dead. (Unrated; 158 min.) Stieg Larsson’s book is the hottest thing going in mysteries right now, and thankfully, director Niels Arden Oplev and screenwriters Nikolaj Arcel and Rasmus Heisterberg recognized that more important
than any of the hype swirling around the book is the protagonist at its center, Lisbeth Salander. She is the girl with the dragon tattoo, and she’s maybe the best fictional character to come around yet this century. Swedish actress Noomi Rapace is absolutely incredible in her ability to bring Lisbeth to life. She is a force of nature, pure and simple. Lisbeth is hired to dig up dirt on Mikael (Michael Nyqvist) but ends up helping him investigate the disappearance many years ago of Harriet, heiress to a creepy, feuding family of millionaires. Though it may use the U.S. title, the movie doesn’t shy away from the book’s unrelenting critique of the violence that society allows men to perpetuate against women, and though the scenes with certain unsavory characters may have been cut down in number, they are still surprisingly graphic. Luckily, Lisbeth is womankind’s ultimate revenge fantasy come true—sooner or later, her boots are gonna walk all over absolutely everyone. (SP)

Due to a wormhole, observed by a hot tub repairman or a Time Lord or something (Chevy Chase), three idiots (Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry and the ever soulful John Cusack) are transported back to their happier past at a ski resort in 1986. Accidentally transported with them is 24-yearold Jacob (the hilarious Clark Duke), a depressed middle-aged-man-intraining whose life may depend on the events of the night to come. Certainly the funniest and grimiest film since The Hangover, but Hot Tub Time Machine’s editing is ruthless, almost to the point of resembling a coming-attractions reel. Rather than looking like a frenzied mess, however, it is more like there was some brilliant four-hour version that was cut down to a ragged but right shape. Director Steve Pink scripted High Fidelity; Cusack and Corddry do things here that you will still be laughing about 10 years from now: examples being Corddry’s violent unplugging of himself from a hospital bed or Cusack’s monologue about the day life went wrong for him, a tale as funny as the story in Gremlins about the Santa who ruined Christmas. (RvB) 9719 /AA (R; 117 min.) Dave, a home-brewed costumed vigilante
(Aaron Johnson), meets up with real professionals in the field: a Batman and Robin–esque father-anddaughter team (Nicolas Cage, and the excellent Chloe Moretz, who was the wise little girl in (500) Days of Summer). Entertaining in parts, but director Matthew Vaughn has no feeling for the romance and mystery and vigilante lore: the movie has a nasty fan-boy quality, a hermetic focus that doesn’t see anything beyond the purpose of beating bad guys bloody. Cage carries the movie’s ambiguity deftly—he’s enough of a serious comic book reader that he knows it’s a dreadful thing when a father bends his child to revenge. Bloody-minded little girls (thank heaven for them) may like Moritz. It’s nuts to call Kick-Ass the next Watchmen. The slamming violence and the dullard noms de guerre these superheroes pick for themselves show a comicbook tradition at the end of a line. (RvB) :/ ;7AA7=< (R; 125 min.) Che (Benjamin Bratt) is an S.F. Muni conductor, a hobby mechanic and an ex-con, single-parenting his son, Jesse (Jeremy Ray Valdez). What he doesn’t know is that Jesse has a secret life—and a boyfriend who lives in St. Francis Wood. Che’s outright rage at his son’s sexuality is tempered by the attentions of his lovely new neighbor Lena (Erika
Alexander). Any positive representation of Aztlan has to be applauded; the scenes of highly polished lowriders gliding through the Mission make their own statement of beauty and pride. Bratt is the definition of movie-star gravity: a man doing nothing but thinking about stuff and making it look interesting. The film, then, is a celebration of San Francisco. Problem is, San Francisco may be San Francisco, but it is still a city. So some hardto-credit idealization mixes uneasily with real, street-level violence. (And it’s one thing to make a Sundance movie, another to openly filch a scene from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.) La Mission is a kind of overexemplified view of San Francisco as a city of healing and refuge: a vision of a place where everyone is wounded, and almost everyone heals each other. The dearth of narrative thrust and useful informational tidbits are a downside—the creatures swimming by are sometimes identified, sometimes not. They’re arranged by cuteness, color and shape rather than by districts of the
ocean, as in the sturdy zonal structure of Earth. Bruno Coulais, the rising composer whose work was key to the success of The Secret of Kells and Coraline, is adept with musical scoring: the organ is never too heavy and the harp is never too light. You’ll want to miss most of the text; because this is Disney, the anthropomorphic angle is heavy; narrator Pierce Brosnan salutes the ancient wisdom of a sheepshead wrasse, the smoochiness of a walrus and the smiling face of our friend the Great White Shark. Oceans’ cuteness is, you know, for the kids; it’s moments to clutch like a blanket when seeing the bottomless appetites underwater: a horrorsequence of a school of sardines under Scud attack by plummeting cormorants, frigate birds picking off a beachful of baby tortoises as if they were popcorn and a vicious crab/langouste bout that’s as bad as any streetfight. Lillian’s Italian Kitchen dishes up East Coast attitude with the sauce to back it up 0G 16@7AB7</ E/B3@A
W
E STARTED with prawns diavola and ended with decadent cannoli. In between we feasted on home-cooked Italian food, Jersey-style. A vibrant neighborhood haunt with no pretensions and plenty of gusto, Lillian’s Italian Kitchen has come into its own. Those expecting the Italian cuisine of Italy will quickly be set straight. Lillian’s is an authentic Italian-American joint with so much meatball-and-marinara attitude it will bring a tear to the eye of any East Coast native. “I could be at Roberto’s on the Shore, rhapsodized my companion Jack, launching into his second mouthwatering meatball. And he was right. Lillian’s caters to East Coast expats by providing warm, almost maternal service, kitchen-table casualness and a Sunday gravy to match your great-aunt Zelda’s. Imagine a family-run version of Buca di Beppo and you’d be getting close. No wonder the entire Eastside loves to wait and wait for a table on weekends, checking cell phones for an alert that their table—one of only a dozen or so in this tiny trattoria—is finally ready. Most find the wait well worthwhile, and after a few sips of wine and a bite of my succulent prawn appetizer ($14.95), I had to agree. Jack had wisely ordered a green salad to keep us company on our odyssey through the world of garlicky red sauce ($5). I fell instantly in love with a big tumbler of
>/@BG =< / >:/B3 If Lillian’s black truff le-stuffed gnocchi with Gorgonzola cream sauce and New York steak doesn’t do the trick, nothing will.
Martin Ranch Sangiovese ($9.50) while Jack nursed his Chianti Classico ($7.50). Seated comfortably at our plainly set table (there are no white tablecloths here, just paper napkins and simple cutlery), we prepared ourselves for a treat. The place practically levitates with joy, every table packed with families, grandfolks and couples eating like it was South Philly or something. After plowing through the zesty salad of hearts of romaine, cherry tomatoes and grated carrots slathered in a nicely balanced vinaigrette, we entered the heart of the Lillian’s experience: Sunday gravy. Based on the meaty, garlicky homecooked marinara that formed the centerpiece of Sunday dinner in, oh,
Brooklyn, East Orange or Newark circa 1955, the Sunday gravy is f lat-out dreamy. I ordered mine with well-made house Italian sausage over a gold mine of perfectly cooked penne ($11.95). Lillian’s Sunday gravy is distinguished by its lavish use of pork, beef, sausage and spare ribs over your choice of penne, linguine or polenta. But you can mix and match with the house ravioli (add $2), thanks to this pasta-driven menu. Jack ordered a noticeably fiery version of arrabbiata over penne ($8.95) with a side of stellar meatballs ($4). Killer meatballs. Meatballs to make a grown man refuse to believe in cholesterol. For dessert we shared a textbook version of crisp cannoli filled with chocolate-studded ricotta, maraschino
cherry and orange zest ($5.50). Sigh. “This is the only believable cannoli I’ve had on the West Coast! Jack swore. Yes, we had fun with this unapologetically upbeat, nondesigner food. Even though Lillian’s f lirts with urban attitude, it is smack dab in the middle of Soquel Avenue. There’s a little Jersey in all of us. Lillian’s just helps it step into the light.

Astrology Free Will
By Rob Brezsny
For the week of May 5 /@73A (March 21–April 19): Hip-hop music definitely needs to include more tuba playing. I think that’s what’s missing from it. Likewise, the sport of skateboarding would benefit from having more dogs and monkeys that can master its complexities; the state of journalism could be improved by including more babies as reporters; and you Aries folks would significantly upgrade your life by learning how to play the game of cricket. (If you believe everything I just said, you’ll be equally gullible when a little voice in your head tries to convince you to seek out things you don’t really need or adopt behavior that doesn’t suit you.) B/C@CA (April 20–May 20): Among the ancient Anglo-Saxons, the month of May was called “Thrimilce. The word referred to the fact that cows were so productive at this time of year that they could be milked three times a day. I thought of that as I studied your current astrological data, Taurus. During this year’s Thrimilce, you are almost impossibly fertile and abundant and creative. My advice is to give generously, but not to the point of exhaustion: the equivalent of three times a day, but not four. 53;7<7 (May 21–June 20): In accordance with the astrological omens, I encourage you to seek out a concentrated period of sweet oblivion. Not a numb, narcotized limbo. Not a mournful unconsciousness that’s motivated by a depressive urge to give up. No, Gemini: The mental blankness that you cultivate should be generated by a quest to rejuvenate yourself, and it must have qualities of deliciousness and delight. You not only have a need to rest and recharge in a lush nowhere—you also have the right to do so.
1/<13@ (June 21–July 22): A while back, I gave my readers this homework: “Tell a story about the time a divine intervention reached down and altered your course in one tricky, manic swoop. A woman named Kelly testified as follows: “At first I was disturbed to find I couldn’t identify the last time Spirit descended into my midst with a forceful intervention. But finally I realized why: I have been working to make my whole life be guided by the Spirit of my Higher Power, as a deep undercurrent. That way I don’t need bolts of lightening to fix my course. This is a useful lesson, Cancerian. It’s an excellent time for you to follow Kelly’s lead. Ask yourself how you could cultivate a deep, abiding undercurrent of the good inf luence you want to have guide you, thereby making lightning bolts of divine intervention unnecessary. :3= ( July 23–Aug. 22): The exact height of Mt. Everest has proved challenging to determine. Even using modern scientific methods, different teams of surveyors have come up with varying measurements. The problem is not simply with the calculations themselves. The world’s tallest peak is definitely evolving. Shifts in the earth’s tectonic plates work to raise it up and move it northeastward. But there’s also evidence that the melting of its glaciers due to climate change is causing it to shrink. A member of one mountain climbing expedition said, “If Everest is bobbing up and down, we must hope to catch it on a low day. I bring this to your attention, Leo, in order to offer you a metaphor for the coming weeks. Your version of Mt. Everest is shriveling. Get ready to ascend. D7@5= (Aug. 23–Sept. 22): Have you been lusting after spiritual traditions other than your own? Have you been fantasizing about cheating on the deity you’ve always been faithful to, and seeking a taboo liaison with a strange and exciting god from another part of reality? If so, Virgo, that’s a good sign. I suspect you could use a few adjustments to your familiar relationship with the Divine Wow. After all, you have gone through a lot of changes since the last time you hammered out your definitive theories about the meaning of life. What made good sense for you back then can’t be completely true for you any more. So feel free to let your mind wander in the direction of holy experiments.
:70@/ (Sept. 23–Oct. 22): When a girl is born, her ovaries already contain all the eggs she will ever have. What this means, of course, is that a part of you was in your grandmother’s womb as well as in your mother’s. Now would be an excellent time to celebrate that primal fact. Your connection with your
mother’s mother is especially important these days. I suggest you meditate on what gifts and liabilities you received from her (genetic and otherwise), and how you might be able to make better use of the gifts even as you take steps to outwit the liabilities.
A1=@>7= (Oct. 23–Nov. 21): Who is the person most unlike you in the world? I suggest you study that person for tips on how to improve your life. What are the healthy experiences you are least attracted to? You might want to meditate on exactly why they’re so unappealing, and use that information to update your ideas about yourself. What are the places on the earth that you long ago decided you would never visit? I invite you to fantasize being in those places and enjoying yourself. Can you guess why I’m calling this Opposite Week, Scorpio? A/57BB/@7CA (Nov. 22–Dec. 21): Are you in a trance or a rut or a jam? If so, excuse yourself. It’s break time! You need spaciousness. You need slack. You need to wander off and do something different from what you have been doing. If there’s any behavior you indulge in with manic intensity, drop it for a while. If you’ve been caught up in a vortex of excruciating sincerity or torturous politeness, shake it off and be more authentic. Of all the good reasons you have for relaxing your death-grip, here’s one of the best: Life can’t bring you the sublime gift it has for you until you interrupt your pursuit of a mediocre gift. 1/>@71=@< (Dec. 22–Jan. 19): The state of Texas is a Capricorn, having become part of the United States on Dec. 29, 1845. At that time, it was granted the right to divide itself into five separate states at some future date. So far it hasn’t chosen to do so, and I would advise it to continue that policy. I extend the same counsel to all of my Capricorn readers. From an astrological perspective, this is not a favorable time for you to break yourself up into subsections. On the contrary: I suggest you sow unity and solidarity among your various parts.
/?C/@7CA ( Jan. 20–Feb. 18): I’m all for recycling, composting, and carpooling. Anything you and I can do to reduce our carbon footprint is brilliant. But I also agree with author Chris Hedges, who says, “The reason the ecosystem is dying is not because we still have a dryer in our basement. It is because corporations look at everything, from human beings to the natural environment, as exploitable commodities. It is because consumption is the engine of corporate profits. So beyond our efforts to save the earth by adjusting our own individual habits, we’ve got to revise the way corporations work. Now let’s apply this way of thinking to the specific personal dilemma you’re facing right now: It’s important for you to change yourself, yes—and I’m glad you’re taking responsibility for your role in the complications—but you will also have to transform the system you’re part of. >7A13A (Feb. 19–March 20): Every year Americans fork over six times as much money on buying lottery tickets as they do on going to the movies, according to the documentary film Lucky. Yet many people who actually buck the improbable odds regard their “luck as a curse. “Winning the lottery is like throwing Miracle-Gro on all your character defects, said one person. Let this serve as a cautionary tale for you in the coming months, Pisces. To get ready for the good things that are headed your way, you should work to purify any darkness that’s lurking in your unconscious.
