N 1995, in an effort to par ody the way the American Psychiatric Association’s hu gely inf luential Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Me ntal Disorders medicalizes every excessive behavior, psy chiatrist Ivan Goldberg introduced on his website the concept of “Internet Addiction Disorder.â€? Last sum mer Ben Alexander, a 19-yea r-old college student obsessed wi th the online multiplayer game World of Warcraft, was profiled by CBS News, NPR, the Assoc iated Press and countless other media outlets because of his status as client No. 1 at reSTART, the first residential treatment center in America for individuals trying to get themselves clean from Azero th, iPhones, and all the other digital narcotics of our age . At reSTART’s 5-acre haven in the woods near Seattle, clients pay big bucks to detox from pat hological computer use by building chicken coops, cooking ha mburgers and engaging in daily therapy sessions with the program’s two founders, psychologist Hilarie Cash and clinical social wo rker and life coach Cosette Rae. With room for just six addicts at a time and a $14,500 progra m fee, reSTART isn’t designed for the masses, and so far it see ms to have attracted more reporters tha n paying clients. When I spo ke with Rae in May, she said “10 to 15â€? people had participated in the 45day program to date. ¨ #

Still, the fact that reSTART exists at all shows how far we’ve progressed in taking Dr. Goldberg’s spoof seriously. You may have been too busy monitoring Kim Kardashian’s every passing thoughtlike thing on Twitter to notice, but Digital Detox Week took place in April, and Video Game Addiction Awareness Week followed on its heels in June. Internet addiction disorder has yet to claim a Tiger Woods of its own, but the sad, silly evidence of our worldwide cyber-bingeing mounts on a daily basis. A councilman in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv is ousted from his position for playing Farmville during budget meetings. There are now at least three apps that use the iPhone’s camera to show the world right in front of you so you can keep texting while walking down the street, confident in your
ability to avoid sinkholes, telephone poles and traffic. Earlier this year, 200 students taking a class in media literacy at the University of Maryland went on a 24-hour media fast for a group study, then described how “jittery,â€? “anxious,â€? “miserableâ€? and “crazyâ€? they felt without Twitter, Facebook, iPods and laptops. “I clearly am addicted,â€? one student concluded, “and the dependency is sickening.â€? In the early days of the web, dirty talk was exchanged at the excruciatingly slow rate of 14.4 bits per second, connectivity charges accrued by the hour instead of the month, and the only stuff for sale online was some overpriced hot sauce from a tiny store in Pasadena. It took the patience of a Buddhist monk, thousands of dollars and really bad ¨ %

SK Stephen L. Braveman what most of the patients he treats for pornography and sex addiction have in common and he’ll tell you that, in about 85 percent of the cases, they’re also addicted to the Internet. “It’s very common for people who come in my door to say they’re addicted to their Blackberry or addicted to their computer, says Braveman, a Monterey-based marriage and family therapist specializing in sex therapy. “It’s not a big deal for a computer programmer who’s making a million dollars a year working on their computer. But for someone like a commute train operator who’s checking email when they should be watching the tracks, it’s a big problem. Although Braveman’s practice is focused on patients’ sexual problems rather than their online habits, he says the Internet has brought a slew of new challenges for the modern sex therapist. Instant, and often free, access to online pornography makes avoiding temptation exponentially more difficult for sex addicts who are looking to tamp down their obsessions. Child pornography, also widely available online, is fueling an increase in pathology and criminality among those who produce and consume it. Braveman says he recently treated a soldier who had been downloading child pornography onto his government-issued laptop. Instead of having him discharged or court-martialed “and wasting the $100,000 they spent trying to make him a killer, Braveman says the young man’s commander came to him looking to get the soldier treatment. In many cases, Braveman says his patients have to find a replacement for the computer altogether, because even if a patient gives up online porn, he or she can quite easily switch to online games, shopping or gambling. “With porn addicts we have to be very careful, he says. “If we don’t find a proper outlet, they can switch to something else. If we get them away from adult content but they spend hours on computer games, we haven’t helped them much. Curtis Cartier

1 =D 3 @ A B= @ G j 2 7 5 7 B/ : 8 C < 9 7 3 A TV reception to overuse the web in a self-destructive manner. Yet even then, many people felt Ivan Goldberg’s notes on Internet addiction worked better as psychiatry than comedy. A year before Goldberg posted his spoof, Kimberly Young, a psychologist at the University of Pittsburgh, had already begun conducting formal research into online addiction. By 1996 the Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital had established a computer addiction clinic, a professor at the University of Maryland had created an Internet addiction support group and The New York Times was running op-eds about the divorce epidemic that Internet addiction was about to unleash. In 1998 Young told the Riverside PressEnterprise that “5 to 10 percent of the 52 million Internet users [were] addicted or ‘potentially addicted.’ Doctors today use similar numbers when estimating the number of online junkies. In 2009 David Greenfield, a psychiatrist at the University of Connecticut, told the San Francisco Chronicle that studies have shown 3 percent to 6 percent of Internet users “have a problem. Is it possible that the ability to keep extremely close tabs on Ashton Kutcher actually has reduced the Internet’s addictive power? Three percent is an awful lot of people. Argue all you like that a real addiction should require needles, or spending time in seedy bars with people who drink vodka through their eyeballs, or at least the overwhelming and nihilistic urge to invest thousands of dollars in a broken public school system through the purchase of lottery tickets. Those working on the front lines of technology overuse have plenty of casualties to point to. In our brief conversation, Cosette Rae tells me about a Harvard student who lost a scholarship because he spent too much time playing games, a guy who spent so many sedentary hours at his computer that he developed blood clots in his leg and had to have it amputated, and an 18-year-old who chose homelessness over gamelessness when his parents told him he either had to quit playing computer games or move out. A few minutes on Google yields even more lurid anecdotes. In 2007 an Ohio teenager shot his parents, killing his mother and wounding his father, after they took away his Xbox. This year a South Korean couple let their real baby starve to death because they were spending so much time caring for their virtual baby in a role-playing game called Prius Online. On a pound-for-pound basis, the
average World of Warcraft junkie undoubtedly represents a much less destructive social force than the average meth head. But it’s not extreme anecdotes that make the specter of Internet addiction so threatening; it’s the fact that Internet overuse has the potential to scale in a way that few other addictions do. Even if Steve Jobs designed a really cool-looking syringe and started distributing free heroin on street corners, not everyone would try it. But who among us doesn’t already check his email more often than necessary? As the Internet weaves itself more and more tightly into our lives, only the Amish are completely safe. As early as 1996, Kimberly Young was promoting the idea that the American Psychiatric Association (APA) should add Internet addiction disorder to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). In February, the APA announced that its coming edition of the DSM, the first major revision since 1994, will for the first time classify a behavior-related condition—pathological gambling—as an “addiction rather than an “impulse control disorder. Internet addiction disorder is not being included in this new category of “behavioral addictions, but the APA said it will consider it as a “potential addition . . . as research data accumulate. If the APA does add excessive Internet use to the DSM, the consequences will be wide-ranging. Health insurance companies will start offering at least partial coverage for treatment programs such as reSTART. People who suffer from Internet addiction disorder will receive protection under the Americans With Disabilities Act if their impairment “substantially limits one or more major life activities. Criminal lawyers will use their clients’ online habits to fashion diminished capacity defenses. Which means that what started as a parody in 1995 could eventually turn more darkly comic than ever imagined. Picture a world where the healthcare system goes bankrupt because insurers have to pay for millions of people determined to kick their Twitter addictions once and for all. Where employees who view porn at work are legally protected from termination. Where killing elves in cyberspace could help absolve you for killing people in real life. Is it too late to revert to our older, healthier, more balanced ways of living and just spend all our leisure hours watching Love Boat reruns? 0

Shakespeare Santa Cruz’s ‘Othello’ packs some good acting but lacks coherence 0G 16@7AB7</ E/B3@A
‘O
THELLO, which opened Aug. 6 at Shakespeare Santa Cruz in the Festival Glen, is a bold and tragic tale of “one that loved not wisely but too well. Othello, a celebrated black general of Venice (played with physical power by Corey Jones), has eloped with Desdemona, the daughter of Brabantio, a senator of Venice. “It is too much of joy, Othello admits, finding himself newly married and assigned to defend Cyprus against the Turks. The plot thickens quickly on the wings of brilliant writing as news of the promotion of a lieutenant, Cassio (Richard Prioleau), reaches the overlooked commander Iago (Victor Talmadge). Cassio famously plots his revenge for this perceived insult by turning Othello first against Cassio, and then against his new bride, by planting Desdemona’s handkerchief on Cassio, whereby it is “discovered, and with it the fictional adultery as well. Everything in Othello depends upon our loathing the villainous Iago and cheering the loving couple, Othello and his Desdemona. We know that this is a tale that cannot end well, but in order for it to captivate us, we must have some clear markers of the deep bitterness gnawing at Iago and of Othello’s conflicts as a defender of Venice who is also a man in love. As consummate as is much of the acting, and as swift as is the pace of this production, there seemed a crucial absence of coherence among the actors and their text that prevented the source of Iago’s sadism from surfacing. Some incoherence might be traced to the absence of a set, without which the drama, directed by Pam MacKinnon,
<= 1=C<B@G 4=@ =:2 4@73<2A Othello (Corey Jones, right) is tricked by a scheming Iago (Victor Talmadge) in ‘Othello,’ running through Aug. 29.
never quite pulls together visually. Nor does the costuming generate any sense of drama, intrigue or time signature. In true postmodern style, we might be anywhere, watching any random intersection of people from any time and any place. Military uniforms identify the lieutenants of Venice, while a series of blatantly unattractive gowns are modeled by Green’s statuesque Desdemona. It is unclear why Marion Adler as Emelia (Desdemona’s maid and Iago’s wife) is clothed in military khaki, but all these choices blur the potency of words and deeds. As Iago, Victor Talmadge needs to be the poisonous engine powering Shakespeare’s great tale of duplicity and emotional exploitation. Yet we are given no point of access or insight—we simply do not understand his motivation. Why is he so intent upon betraying the great general? Can it simply be the lack of promotion? Is it a personal racism? Something more? We cannot gain any traction, since Talmadge’s matter-of-fact delivery prevents nuance or sting of Schadenfreude. The audience had little idea how to engage with the words or the action onstage. So they responded to the surfaces offered, the gestures and the
shouting, by laughing at all the wrong moments, as if they were watching a sitcom on TV. The final scene, fueled by shouted dialogue and the visual distraction of grimaces and outstretched palms woven through Green’s technique, lacked the required sense of horror. One last-minute exception appeared in the valiant and persuasive speech by Adler, Iago’s horrified wife, upon discovering the full weight of her husband’s deception. At least in this early performance, Othello never fully materialized in the magical somewhere of the redwood glen. It’s entirely possible that a melodramatic Elizabethan tragedy finds decreasing sympathy and traction in a postmodern world of slick surfaces and quick consumption. The brilliant play itself seemed confined to a limbo just offstage, waiting to be brought to life.

89 min.) Director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) has thoughtfully outfitted his killer fish pic with 3-D technology, the better to distract the audience from the premise, which is that a sudden tremor releases a school of prehistoric man-eating fish from their underwater hideyhole, wreaking havoc on attractive vacationers. (PG; 94 min.) Even the second tier of animated filmmaking is fairly advanced, and Despicable Me’s brisk and intelligent rephrase of the evil genius plot makes up for
several cul de sacs. The bald, heavy-eyebrowed and Akim Tamiroff– accented Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) is a mad scientist working on his latest plot. If he can steal a shrink-ray just being developed, the Bank of Evil will give him a loan to finance his magnum opus: the theft of the moon itself. The action may be silly, but the directors take it seriously. (Read a full-length review at www.metroactive. com.) (RvB) 27<<3@ 4=@ A16;C19A (PG-13; 110
min.) Steve Carell stars as Barry, one of the most dimwitted individuals imaginable. He is courted by Tim (Paul Rudd), a rising executive looking for the perfect guest for his boss’s monthly event, a dinner for idiots. The message is essentially that an abnormally idiotic man can ruin your entire life but you should not make fun of him because of it. Interestingly, the denouement contradicts the exact purpose of the movie for the audience. Replete with buffoonery, the film does boast some moments of incomprehensible social awkwardness that will have audiences twisting in their seats. (MM) 3/B >@/G :=D3

Julia Roberts stars in Elizabeth Gilbert’s bestselling account of life reinvention by way of conducting the titular activities in Italy, India and Bali.
disdain for the movie is less dismaying than his presidential ambitions, and some muttered crazy-talk about Bosnia by Mickey Rourke. (RvB)

112 min.) Katie Holmes, Kevin Kline and John. C. Reilly star in tale about a gentleman escort of wealthy New York widows and an aspiring playwright.
(R; 103 min.) Director/ co-writer/star Sylvester Stallone rounds up the cast of most of the action movies of the past few decades as mercenaries for an assault on the vile island of Vilena, a Caribbean dictatorship run by an evil general, who is the sock-puppet for CIA swine Eric Roberts. Turning the private army of El General into what Terry Crewes’ Hale Caesar accurately describes as “red sausageâ€? is the aim of the aged if still muscular lugs. The slomo girl is Sandra (Giselle ItiĂŠ), the curvy daughter of the dictator. The scene of her waterboarding is typical for Stallone; the decades have proved that he never knows when he’s crossed over the fun line. The wasting of the army (one long explosion in a butcher shop) and the fights between musclemen are as low-class as the greatly uninteresting car-crunches, though a Dolph Lundgren/Jet Li bout has some style. Look for a cameo by Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose

In 1981, in Moscow, Pierre (Guillaume Canet), a French technocrat, is mistakenly approached by Grigoriev (Serbian director Emir Kusturica). This Soviet officer, sick of his government, aims to help push it over from the inside by passing on information to the West. The Russian is surprised to find out that Pierre has almost no connections with the secret service. Pierre’s government asks the amateur spy to carry on, and a friendship develops. The art direction is immaculate; Carion aims to take you on a trip to the vanished USSR, dwelling over the frightening Martian/ Gothic towers and neongreen corridors. (RvB)

(R; 137 min.) This second installment in the Stieg Larsson series brings back Noomi Rapace’s ratty but invincible urchin Lisbeth Salander. Shortly after Lisbeth’s return to Stockholm, her old nemesis of a parole officer starts stirring up trouble. Meanwhile, trustworthily pockmarked investigative journalist Mikael (Michael Nyqvist) meets a new writer. He and his sociologist girlfriend are trying to expose the sex-slave trade conducted out of the former Soviet Union, apparently abetted by the Sapo, the Swedish Secret Police. Salander is an old-fashioned pulp heroine in a pulp plot. (RvB) 7<13>B7=< (PG-13; 148 min.) The basic idea of Christopher Nolan’s film is simple. Led by Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), a sort of Impossible Mission Force, working for a Japanese trillionaire (Ken Watanabe), descends into the sleeping subconscious of the plutocrat’s young rival (Cillian Murphy), using technology that allows them to design dreamscapes. Because of the complexity of this operation, the team is forced to create dreams within dreams, and each deeper dream takes place in an exponentially larger time frame. The
film is audacious and frequently thrilling, especially when Nolan folds Paris in on itself and Escherizes interior spaces. It’s visionary filmmaking, uncommon at this scale, with neither the mawkishness of What Dreams May Come or the spiritual horse feathers of the Matrix trilogy. (RvB) B63 972A /@3 /:: @756B (R; 111 min.)
Crisis occurs when a very settled lesbian marriage is challenged by the arrival of the sperm donor (Mark Ruffalo) who fathered one of the couple’s children. Julianne Moore as a classic California girl: no intellectual, very earthy, a blurter-out of things she probably shouldn’t have said; Annette Bening, amusingly dour, is her hard-working spouse. Director Lisa Cholodenko and co-writer Stuart Blumberg takes their film away from the realm of the typical gay and lesbian film fest talkathon and up to speed with the blogs, Alison Bechdel’s cartoons Dykes to Watch Out For and with the fiction of Mary Gaitskill. As a director, Cholodenko is a dry, tough-minded wit. But the way she analyzes the needy, unpretty cores of these characters is what takes The Kids Are All Right out of the realm of the domestic comedy/drama and makes it a film to remember. (RvB)

(PG-13; 107 min.) Two disgraced cops—Allen (Will Ferrell) and Terry (Mark Wahlberg)—hope to claim the roles of star detectives held by fellow detectives P.K. (Samuel L. Jackson) and Christopher (Dwayne Johnson). Ferrell’s Allen is a socially awkward detective just looking to get through each day by handling the accounting side of police work. Wahlberg’s Terry provides the kind of extreme vexation that having to deal with Ferrell’s character on a daily basis inevitably leads to. Despite some excellent comedy pairing by the leads, Allen lacks the hilarious, goodnatured stupidity of, say, a Ron Burgundy. Ferrell attempts to use more dry humor here rather than the outsized expressive comedy we’re used to seeing from him. (MM) A/:B (PG-13; 100 min.) A fast-paced, action-packed thrill ride with a tinge of Cold War–era military tension. Angelina Jolie, who plays CIA officer Evelyn Salt, continues to be the sole actress capable of playing the lead role in an action film. The story begins with the torture of Salt in a North Korean military prison. Eventually, she is released in a prisoner exchange. Two years later, Salt and her superior, Ted Winter
(Liev Schreiber), are on their way out of the building when a Russian defector, Orlov, accuses Salt of being a Russian spy during an interrogation. This is the point where the action starts and never stops again. Unfortunately, the plot in this film doesn’t leave much room for the audience to decide whether Orlov’s accusation is true or false. The movie is completely reliant on Jolie for its appeal, and she delivers. The action sequences are filled with old-school foot chases and fights blended with plenty of new-school, improbable—or likely impossible—stunts and special effects. If you love action flicks with a near minimal amount of thought required to decipher the impending acts this is a great show. (MM) A1=BB >7:5@7; DA B63 E=@:2 (PG-13;
108 min.) Michael Cera has a crush problem: he must vanquish the seven evil exes of his new beloved (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) or else lose her forever. AB3> C> ! 2 (PG-13; 107 min.) A gaggle of New York street dancers team up with an NYU freshman and dance it out, yo, with a rival team of hip-hop dancers in a, yes, life-changing competition.

Astrology Free Will
By Rob Brezsny
For the week of August 18 /@73A (March 21–April 19): In the 18th century, the French Academy laid down rules about the differences between professional and amateur paintings. For example, it was decreed that true artists must create a “licked surface, hiding all evidence of their brushstrokes. The illusion was more convincing that way; viewers could sink their attention fully into the image without being distracted by thoughts about the artist’s process. When the Impressionists barged into the scene in the 1870s, one of their rebellions against convention was to reject the licked surface. By making some of their brushstrokes visible, they declared they weren’t interested in upholding the artifice. They wanted their audience to get involved in their subjective interpretation of the scene that was portrayed. In the coming week, Aries, I encourage you to be like the Impressionists. Forget about trying to present a licked surface. Reveal the inner workings that are whirling and humming behind your eyes. B/C@CA (April 20–May 20): If your home is like a museum, a staid assemblage of fine memories, I suggest you shake things up a bit. If your imagination is filled with tape loops that keep running storylines you’ve heard a thousand times before, shake things up a bit. If your daily actions are so thoroughly possessed by the anesthetizing demons of habit that you can’t recall your last creative innovation, shake things up a bit. On the other hand, there’s no need for blame. Don’t berate yourself for your sluggishness. It was an inevitable byproduct of your efforts to solidify and stabilize your life. Just slip into a more playful mode and enjoy a bout of experimentation. 53;7<7 (May 21–June 20): Maybe you know a person like my friend Joanna. She’s bright but terse, open-minded but not chatty. Like an inscrutable Buddha, she watches everything closely and churns her thoughts carefully. Silence is her ally. Now and then, though, when moved by an inner prompting that has nothing to do with drinking wine, she will suddenly erupt with a torrent of sweet talk and pithy observations and wild explorations. I predict that for you, Gemini, the entire world—even the parts of it that are not usually very forthcoming—will soon resemble Joanna when she’s overf lowing.
1/<13@ (June 21–July 22): This would be an excellent time for you to get aggressively inventive about your education. It wouldn’t be too crazy, in my opinion, to launch your own school, with you as the only student. You could design your own course curriculum for the coming years. Decide who your teachers will be. Think about where you can get the stuff you’ll need to expand your mind, enhance your skills, and just plain increase your intelligence. You could call your center of higher learning the University of Wily Exuberance or the Academy of Astonishing Grace or the Institute of Getting Down to Business.
:3= (July 23–Aug. 22): For the people of Finland, the word sisu describes a quality they regard as integral to their national character. It refers to a courageous strength of will that can be sustained for a long time—a staunch ferocity that refuses to be defeated. We all could use more of that good stuff, not only to weather our personal ordeals but also to stay plucky in the face of the world’s lunacy. The coming weeks will be an especially good time for you to build up your reserves of sisu, Leo. How? Start by taking inventory of all the resources and allies and skills you have at your disposal. D7@5= (Aug. 23–Sept. 22): “Ever upstream from myself, wrote Belgian poet Edmond Vandercammen. “I advance, implore and pursue myself. I suggest you adopt that attitude, Virgo. Assume that your best self is sailing along at a rapid clip, somewhere in the distance ahead of you, and it’s your job to catch up. Your highest form of expression is eluding you, but you’re hunting it down. The most beautiful possible embodiment of all your potentials is surging toward the future, and it’s your fun job to close the gap between you and unite with it. :70@/ (Sept. 23–Oct. 22): In one possible scenario I could foresee for you in the coming week, you’re sweaty and tearful, enmeshed in an extreme state that causes an internal blockage to dissolve. The sweat is purgative, the tears are cathartic, and you’re riding a wave of relief and release that clears out a backlog of emotional congestion. In a second possible future, I
could see you as supernaturally relaxed and exuberant, periodically laughing so hard that you break up an internal blockage. The calm is purgative, the laughter is cathartic, and you’re riding a wave of relief and release that clears out a backlog of emotional congestion. Which scenario would you prefer?
A1=@>7= (Oct. 23–Nov. 21): Last June, comedian Stephen Colbert reported that President Obama’s big TV address to Americans about the Gulf catastrophe was a failure because it went over the heads of too many people. Language experts who analyzed Obama’s speech determined that it was written at a tenth-grade level—too professorial, scolded Colbert. I wonder what he would say about the horoscopes I compose, which are designed for readers who enjoy thinking metaphorically and have a high degree of emotional intelligence. In the coming week, Scorpio, I suggest that you take the approach that Obama and I use rather than the one Colbert (farcically) recommended. Don’t talk down to your audience or pander to the lowest common denominator. Raise everyone up with your appeals.
A/57BB/@7CA (Nov. 22–Dec. 21): My favorite baseball player Tim Lincecum told San Francisco magazine: “I think you either get in the canoe with your oar and control the boat, or get into it and let the current take you. I’m kind of in between. I want to be able to enjoy the ride but don’t want to be swept away by it. I don’t want to be overwhelmed; I want to see what’s going on. Whether you are customarily the type of person who controls the boat or the type who enjoys drifting dreamily along, I suggest you take Lincecum’s in-between approach for now. Be half in charge and half surrendered. 1/>@71=@< (Dec. 22–Jan. 19): The poet Jean Perrin dreamed “of marrying the dawn with the light of the moon, and I invite you to do the same. The darkness you’ve been immersed in will leave you soon. As it does, please don’t forsake the pale, moonlike radiance that has provided you with a bit of guidance and consolation. Rather, bring along what it has taught you as you head into the far brighter phase you’re entering. In other words, retain some of the wisdom the dim light has compelled you to learn.
/?C/@7CA (Jan. 20–Feb. 18): I know two people in their 80s who have accomplished a sensational long-running creative art project: They’ve been happily married for 65 years. The amount of reinvention they’ve had to dream up in order to keep loving each other is so profound that it confounds the imagination. How could they possibly have continued to stay closely interwoven through all the changes each of them has gone through as they’ve aged? During the fascinating relationship tests that will be coming your way in the weeks ahead, Aquarius, I’d love for you to summon some of their dogged ingenuity and tenacious collaborative skills. In fact, I predict you will be able to do just that.
Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital Serving you with thorough and compassionate care for more than 45 years
>7A13A (Feb. 19–March 20): For the last 20 years, I’ve worn just one brand of shoes—all-black Converse high-top sneakers. I’ve had them on them at weddings and while jogging, at my daughter’s high school graduation and while performing at my shows. Am I too set in my ways? Definitely. In any case, Pisces, don’t be like me. Whatever your version of covering your feet with nothing but black Converse high-top sneakers may be, the upcoming weeks will be an excellent time to change your ways. Break out and branch out! Try something new about how you present yourself—the equivalent of me switching over to suede moccasins or snakeskin cowboy boots.

Thanks to our guest writer, Janna Hoadley, honorary Cornucopian, for her informative advice. Having a garden is wonderful, call us to find one, attached to a house.
Prune your apple tree, start a veggie garden and be happy Fall is on its way so it’s a good time to prune your fruit and nut trees. Pruning can be done at any time of the year, but it is most commonly done in winter and midspring through summer. The reasons to prune your fruit and nut trees are to reduce the height of large trees or to keep small trees from getting to big for ease of harvest and to encourage the trees to produce consistently abundant crops with great flavor. Pruning and the care that accompanies it can also reduce any pests or diseases that may be present. This is important for good fruit production, the overall health of the trees and the health of other fruit or nut trees in the neighborhood. Now is also a great time to start a vegetable garden if you do not have one already. We are very lucky here in California to be able to garden all year. This is the time to plant vegetables and herbs for an abundant fall and winter harvest such as cabbage, kale, fava beans, lettuce, potatoes, radishes, parsley, chives and oregano. A raised bed in your yard or a container on your porch are both great ways to have fresh veggies ready to pick and eat! The reason I tell you this is because I am the owner and operator of a local business called Your Home Grown Food and helping people grow their own food is my passion. I wanted to be a farmer for a long time and have always been very interested in the production of food. Because of this I got my bachelors degree at UCSC in environmental studies with a focus in agroecology. Now that I have this gardening business I have been able to live out my dream (even though I don’t have farm land) by helping people in the Santa Cruz area grow their own food. I hope to continue spreading the joys and rewards of growing food because it nourishes the body, elevates the spirit, builds community, and makes the world a better place. To find out more about how you can have food growing at your home, check out my website, yourhomegrownfood.com, or contact me, Janna Hoaldey, Agroecologist, at 831-227-1905, yourhomegrownfood@ gmail.com. For gardening tips and information about the alternative food movement, tune in to my weekly radio show about food, Wednesdays 11:30am-12pm on Free Radio Santa Cruz 101.1FM and freakradio.org.
