PRESENT IMPERFECT ‘Happy accidents’ define the new craze for lo-fi photography 0G /<</ A16C3AA:3@

T

HE SUMMER of 2006, my last in high school, my mom gave me the task of filing all of our family photos. I spent those hot days in a cloud of dust, sifting through weathered shoeboxes full of photos of seemingly ancient events: my parents’ “before kids adventures in Europe; my sister’s first time on a bike; my eighth grade dance. Sitting cross-legged on the f loor, surrounded by hundreds of grainy 3by-5s and negative strips, daunted by the sheer volume of a family’s worth of

photos, I remembered the days of film. A time when you couldn’t delete the picture of the bird that f lew in front of Dad’s face, when the f lash robbed cousin Tim of his baby blues and gave him red devil eyes instead. When I’d finished my chore, a part of me longed for an era I thought was lost and gone forever, when one had to wait for shoddily composed, quickly snapped photos to come back from the lab. My nostalgia has been gratified. Outof-focus, light-streaked photos have made a second entrance. But this time

such photo faux pas as darkened edges and double exposures do not condemn a shot to the scrapbook hall of shame. Whole communities have sprung up around these “happy accidentsâ€? and the lovable, crappy cameras that produce them. An entire genre of “toyâ€? cameras, which are often no more than a plastic carriage with a single lens in a bulky, boxy shape, has taken f light. Holga, Diana, Lomo—let’s not forget Polaroid. All low-tech. But all the rage. For some reason. ¨

Cheap Chic Aside from sharing strange but somehow charming names, the cameras that are making a comeback have a few key things in common. Most of the models are made completely out of plastic, even the lens. Some operate on 120 mm film, some have fixed lenses; all are inexpensive. Holgas are adored for discrepancies in their plastic construction that allow light to leak into the body, which often results in bursts of overexposed film. Both Holgas and Dianas are famous for their marginal field coverage and low-quality plastic lenses, which produce the much sought-after vignetting, or blurred-edge look, and highly saturated color photos. In the 1980s, Holga cameras were mass-produced and widely distributed to the Chinese public. Intended to bring photography to the working class in an affordable way, the camera slowly gained international popularity a few years after its introduction. Professional photographers appreciated the image abstraction Holgas produced, as well as their affordable price, which was as low as $15. Diana cameras predate the Holga and were brought into the United States

from a Hong Kong plastic factory in the 1960s. They were widely used as cheap prizes for carnivals and fairs, and produced dreamy images with their soft focus. LOMO LC-A’s are Holga’s communist equivalent, developed in Russia during the ’80s. And, of course, there’s the Polaroid. First introduced in 1947, the camera, which instantly produced square photos with a white margin, had its heyday in the 1960s. Ever since Polaroid announced its decision to discontinue production of the film in 2008, though, the cameras have practically become an item of lore.

Film Flops In an age where digital rules, toy cameras and Polaroids should have no place. The images that digital cameras produce are ultra-crisp, and they’re only getting more exact. Arguably one of the best digital single-lens reflex cameras on the market, Canon’s EOS D5 Mark II, boasts 21 megapixels, eight exposure modes and can snap a photo in 1/8,000th of a second. In contrast, Polaroid cameras tend to generate ¨ !

1=D3@ AB=@G j >@3A3<B 7;>3@431B images that contain less than one megapixel. Digital images may be quickly uploaded onto a computer and emailed to every corner of the earth, while photos from film must still be processed, cropped and then scanned if one plans to share. For the amateur photographer, printing digital pictures is much more economical. Only the cream need be printed. But despite the hassles, low-definition film cameras, or at least their aesthetics, are holding their own—and perhaps even breaking new ground—in the 21st century. The Lomographic Society International is a forum for all things toy camera, whether that entails writing about them, selling them or even selling accessories for them. Championing quick and simple snapshot photography, the group offers 10 “golden rules. The 10th one trumps all: “Don’t worry about any rules. The Hipstamatic iPhone application gives digital photos an old look, as if they were taken with a toy camera. The application’s description reads that Hipstaprints, the application’s resulting images, are “characterized by vignetting, blurring, oversaturation [and discoloration], while the Hipstamatic itself “keeps the quirks of shooting oldschool with the option of switching the type of film, flash and lens used.

But—Why? We get that they’re crappy, we understand that they’re popular. But what exactly precipitates this shift in photographic trends? Jeremiah Flynn, of Jeremiah’s Photo Corner in Santa Rosa, reports that this analog obsession has consumed nearly five of his eight years in photo retail. “It’s shocking how much film we’re selling, he says. “It seems like it’s actually ramping up. And while the standard 35 mm film is still his leading seller, he’s noticing that medium and large format films, like those typically used with Holga and Diana cameras, are flying off the shelves like never before. The same is true of the Instax camera, Fujifilm’s attempt at a new-age Polaroid, which alone ensures a healthy crowd around Jeremiah’s small but thriving “toy camera wall. Customers for the Instax, Jeremiah says, are mostly “people who didn’t have Polaroids as a kid, these 16-, 17-, 19-year-olds, and they’re coming in and they’re like, ‘Wow! Look at this!’ One simple answer is trend. Tod Brilliant, a professional photographer who has been shooting Polaroid for some

10 years, says that instant film is, in some ways, a fashion accessory. “[Polaroids] were such a hipster item, they were so Urban Outfitters, he says. Indeed, the alternative-fashion retail store was among the first in the last decade to reintroduce Holgas to the masses. Of course, not everyone has a Holga from Urban Outfitters. Students of film photography are flea-market- and garage-sale-savvy, but the effect is the same. These photographers are looking for older-looking instruments in the form of weathered plastic. Brilliant, who shoots in both digital and Polaroid, says, “I think I got hooked because it was such a cool object. I go out, I take my Nikon, and it takes great pictures, but it’s not a cool object. Just the same damn thing everyone else has. If you have a camera that looks badass, why not use that?

Low-definition film cameras, or at least their aesthetics, are holding their own—and perhaps even breaking new ground Following trends sucks. But in the end, who cares? “When your favorite band becomes popular, well, did you like them, or did you not like them?â€? Brilliant asks. For him, it’s more about the camaraderie that instant photos foster. “There’s a lot of great community in it,â€? he says. “You’re out with your friends and you’re just starting to take photos and you want to share that process with your friends. It’s not so geeky. It’s not like you take your digital camera and take a picture, and you go home and put it in your laptop. You’re out in a car, and you take it and pass [the Polaroid] to the driver, and that’s that.â€? ¨

The Hi-Fi of Lo-Fi There’s no denying that digital cameras yield excellent high-definition pictures, and do so with much less angst than their film-wasting counterparts. Perhaps it’s the obsession with precision and efficiency that so often accompanies digital technology that makes digital photography feel inefficient. Sonoma State photography major Anna Tracy certainly sees the value of film. “There are only 20 pictures on a roll of film, she says. “You want to be careful about what you take a picture of. You look around and make sure your composition is exactly what you want it to be before you take a picture. Tracy, who previously worked primarily in digital media, took her first class in film photography in 2008 with Sonoma State and Santa Rosa Junior College photography instructor John

Ferdico. Ferdico requires his students to shoot with Holgas, and, initially, Tracy was less than pleased about the process. “I was so angry,â€? she says, “I probably took about six rolls of film, and only two pictures turned out.â€? They later became her two favorite photos and marked the beginning of her loyalty to film. She says, “I think photographers in general are a little more anal than a lot of other people in the art world, maybe a little controlling sometimes,â€? Tracy says. “Everything has a light meter, and it’s very ‘This is how it has to be done.’ [Holgas] kind of let you go a little bit. The fact that you really don’t know how it’s going to turn out, it lets you let go of it.â€? Ferdico himself found solace in Holgas at a time in his career when photography was exciting but ¨ %

1=D3@ AB=@G j >@3A3<B 7;>3@431B overwhelming. “I enjoyed it because it was a refreshing change from worrying about stuff with photography, he says. As an undergraduate art student, he bought his first Holga at a Kansas City dollar store in the 1980s. At around $20, Holgas are more than affordable, especially for photographers, who are prepared to pay many times over that price just for film. Tracy and Ferdico make it sound so easy, sacrificing to-the-very-pore exactness for the ability to capture a serendipitous moment. And really, does high-def mean true-to-life? “Polaroid is more like what you see, says Brilliant. “Your eye can’t focus on more than one space. That’s what I really enjoy. To me, it’s more real because it’s less honest, which makes it more honest. So blurry pictures with a tiny frame taken with a camera that can’t effectively shoot an object more than 10 feet away evoke a heightened sense of verity? Can the human eye do much better? Brilliant rests his case.

Back to Basics For experienced photographers, meticulous visual detail and overly planned shots are not the only aspect of digital that’s bringing them down. There’s the data, too. And just the thought of it bogs everyone down, even if we’re not totally aware. “It’s like a visual overload for me, Tracy says. “I have probably 18 flash drives, full of digital photographs, just because I want to have them all backed up, but it’s just so much to go through. And for someone who’s trying to make a career out of photographs, this computerized burden can act as a hindrance to finding one shot among millions. Which is why Brilliant typically travels with only one lens when shooting with his digital camera. “I really enjoy being limited, he says, “and right now we have so many choices with digital cameras. Brilliant relates this camera craze to other trends that have reverted back to older media, such as the popularity of vinyl records. He says these movements operate on a more “human scale and praises their down-to-earth feasibility. “I can’t carry 4 million photos with me. I can carry 15 Polaroids, he says.

So Bad It’s . . . Maybe these crazy, crappy-cameracarrying kids have something here. Sure, it’s a trend. But it’s a trend based on

spontaneity and downsizing, which is, at best, a hopeful perspective and, at worst, an idealistic one. Ferdico, who has been teaching photography classes for over 12 years, also sees the interest in film as a desire for an authenticity in the art form, a yearning to know how it all works. “Here’s this basic technology that provides the basis for all art forms, says Ferdico. “And it is very much like pottery in that way. “Photographs aren’t only records, but they’re actually souvenirs, he continues. “Every time you take a picture, a physical part of the world is absorbed by the emulsion of the film. And then you carry that with you on the surface of the paper. As I learned how digital photography works, it seems to me, it disappears the moment that light energy is encoded. You actually lost that tiny physical thing.

‘I really enjoy being limited, and right now we have so many choices with digital cameras’ —Tod Brilliant Maybe it is the physical thing that we hold on to, even in our minds. Are we going to remember the family portrait where every strand of hair is in place long after the f lash drive’s been misplaced? Does a photographer really not learn from her mistakes unless the mistakes are tangible? It’s hard to pin it down, exactly. But I do know that those tiny physical things are not lost on me. As I write, I have Instax photos scattered all over my room. Film canisters fill my shelves. Last night, I sat on my bed, moving the small white frames around me and wondering which one of these crappy images could possibly be used to accompany this article. I realized I probably couldn’t use any—they were just that bad. And that was OK. 0

113 min.) In this slowcooked existential spy movie, Dutch director Anton Corbijn keeps the most interesting male movie star in the world in his scopes. Run out of a snowy haven in Sweden and forced into hiding in Italy, Jack (George Clooney) walks through medieval streets, fiddles with a metal drill press and looks over his shoulder for those who might be looking for him. We don’t know his past, but his tattoos tell of some time in the military. Despite being warned by his employer to make no friends in

his new village, Jack meets an elegant hooker (Violante Placido) and a rumbling local priest (Paolo Bonacelli). These two, reaching out to body and soul, compromise Jack’s perimeter. And then Jack is recruited for one last job before retirement: the construction of a sniper rifle for a strikinglooking female assassin (Thekla Reuten). (RvB) /<7;/: 97<52=;

(R; 120 min.) Sharp, tense Australian noir by David Michod, another member of the Blue Tongue collective whose films are revitalizing the Australian film industry. J (James Frecheville) is a softheaded minor—a sad sack with a dim constellation of acne around his downturned, too-small mouth. After his mom dies of a heroine overdose, he’s taken into the scary embrace of his Ma Barkerish grandmother (the incredible Jacki Weaver) and her brood of career criminals. J, a morally dead lunk, ends up in the war between the crooked Melbourne drug squad and the family, and the body count is mounting. One soldier in it: an ambiguous police detective (Guy Pearce). Michod’s script requires some sharp hearing, as pronounced

by the heavily accented cast Listen closely, and you’ll hear some dark gems; recalling happy times with one of his uncles, J says, “We used to throw rocks at cars together. Unfortunately, the film doesn’t really snap together; Michod’s choice of emphasis, of what to include and what to delete, seems off-putting. When characters turn, as one key character does, you don’t feel completely prepared—the clues really aren’t there. Nevertheless, this is closer in spirit to pulp novelist Jim Thompson than many an actual adaptation. (RvB) 1/7@= B7;3 (PG; 98

min.) In addition to ancient ruins, Cairo has a few Imperial British ones, and this slightly stuffy travelogue/ forbidden romance by Ruba Nadda seems to be one. Juliette (Patricia Clarkson), the wife of a U.N. employee stuck in the Gaza Strip, is at loose ends in the Egyptian capital. Fortunately the husband’s former colleague Tareq (Alexander Siddiq)— now retired and running his father’s storied old cafe—can show her the sights. Do they dare tour the pyramids together? Clarkson’s mix of assurance and girlishness is unique,

There isn’t any of the forceful counterpoint that comes from adventures in really big crazy cities, just plenty of nostril-flaring between the leads, and mall walking in bazaars as the Umm Kalthum music plays on the soundtrack and the muezzin wails in the distance. The satisfyingly large and lovely Amina Annabi’s dance at a wedding is a highlight, as are (inevitably) the pyramidscapes at dawn. (RvB) 4:7>>32 (PG; 98 min.)

Based on Wendelin Van Draanen’s youngadult novel of the same name, Flipped is kind of a children’s analogy of the 2002 French film He Loves Me ... He Loves Me Not. We take two separate angles of a boy and a girl’s life, episodes linked by the now-archaic “flip (or flip wipe) as we see the reverse side of the story. It’s 1963 before the JFK assassination: the now near-adolescent Juli (Madeline Carroll) has been in love with Bryce (Callan McAuliffe) since he was a kid, but he doesn’t return the affection because of the eccentricities of Juli and her poor family. Yet there are honorable reasons why Juli’s dad (Aidan Quinn) isn’t bringing home enough money. Director/co-writer Rob Reiner seeks to return to the glory days of Stand by Me. Instead he creates an atmosphere that’s like an arthritic version of Leave It to Beaver, complete with easily assimilated life lessons. Very anachronistic; Juli’s eccentricities include tree-hugging and urban chicken raising. And the relentless fab-’50s

soundtrack will make you make you as tired of those hit tunes as a waiter at Johnny Rocket’s. (RvB) 53B :=E (PG-13; 100

min.) In the 1930s South, a hermit named Felix Bush (Robert Duvall) emerges from his decades of solitude. He drives his mule cart into a nearby small town and makes plans for his funeral, which he intends to have while he’s still alive. He finds no trouble with this idea from the local mortician (Bill Murray). Part of the draw will be Bush publicly telling the secret that made him hide his face in the woods for so many years. Murray, wearing a suspiciouslooking mustache, fur-collared suits and a horseshoe pin, is the film’s saving grace; he has the true comedian’s solitude and toast-dry humor, an eloquent wince at boredom and a consoling flask in the pocket. (RvB) 7<13>B7=< (PG-13; 148

min.) The basic idea of Christopher Nolan’s film is simple. Led by Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), a sort of Impossible Mission Force, working for a Japanese trillionaire (Ken Watanabe), descends into the sleeping subconscious of the plutocrat’s young rival (Cillian Murphy), using technology that allows them to design dreamscapes. Because of the complexity of this operation, the team s forced to create dreams within dreams, and each deeper dream takes place in an exponentially larger time frame. The film is audacious and frequently thrilling, especially when Nolan folds Paris in on itself and Escherizes interior spaces. It’s visionary

filmmaking, uncommon at this scale, with neither the mawkishness of What Dreams May Come or the spiritual horse feathers of the Matrix trilogy. (RvB) B63 972A /@3 /:: @756B (R; 111 min.)

Crisis occurs when a very settled lesbian marriage is challenged by the arrival of the sperm donor (Mark Ruffalo) who fathered one of the couple’s children. Julianne Moore as a classic California girl: no intellectual, very earthy, a blurter-out of things she probably shouldn’t have said; Annette Bening, amusingly dour, is her hard-working spouse. Director Lisa Cholodenko and co-writer Stuart Blumberg takes their film away from the realm of the typical gay and lesbian film fest talkathon and up to speed with the blogs, Alison Bechdel’s cartoons Dykes to Watch Out For and with the fiction of Mary Gaitskill. As a director, Cholodenko is a dry, tough-minded wit. But the way she analyzes the needy, unpretty cores of these characters is what takes The Kids Are All Right out of the realm of the domestic comedy/drama and makes it a film to remember. (RvB) :30/<=< (R; 101 min.)

It’s obvious that much of what one sees in Lebanon comes from personal experience. The problem is that the part that comes from a keen knowledge of cinema techniques—of grabbers and close-ups—is obvious too, and the mixture doesn’t quite mix. Israeli director Samuel Maoz was wounded in the 1982 Israeli excursion into Lebanon. One takes away from his film the sense that tank warfare is an especially filthy way to

fight and die. The movie is mostly carried out in tight close-up as an operation begins, hours before daylight. The crew of a tank gets lost. After they’re crippled from a direct hit, they’re trapped in the neighborhood with a pair of vengeful and unreliable Phalangist Lebanese allies. (RvB) ;/=¸A :/AB 2/<13@

108 min.) Michael Cera is Scott Pilgrim, a laybout in a local Toronto band, who has a thing for two girlfriends—the old Veronica and Betty dichotomy. The nice, tooloyal Betty is a Charlene Yi surrogate called Knives Chau (Ellen Wong); he is more obsessed with Ramona Flowers, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, whose nationality (American), multicolored hair (mostly magenta or ultramarine) and romantic history make her seem exotic. Unfortunately, her ex-lovers are in league against him. Not a bad premise, just a bad carryon. Ultimately, I’m on the world’s side in re: Scott Pilgrim. The heavily cyber-treated visuals, from the winter exteriors to grungy basements, close in on you like the walls in an Indiana Jones tomb. Edgar Wright did this kind of material before and better (on TV’s Spaced); better digital effects and more expensive editorial cleverness can’t make it fresh. (RvB)

Astrology Free Will

By Rob Brezsny

For the week of September 15 /@73A (March 21–April 19): When teen pop star Miley Cyrus appeared on David Letterman’s latenight TV talk show, band leader Paul Schaeffer asked her if she lip-syncs to pre-recorded music during her performances. Miley replied that no, she never fakes it. For evidence, she said, anyone could go watch a YouTube clip from one of her concerts. Sometimes she sounds terrible, which proves that she’s risking the imperfection of actually singing live. I urge you to follow Miley’s lead in your own sphere, Aries. In the coming week, you really do need to be as raw as the law allows. Be your authentic self, please—with no AutoTune-like enhancements.

B/C@CA (April 20–May 20): Here’s your mantra: BIG GREEN LUCK EVERYWHERE. I urge you to say it frequently in the coming days. Sing it softly to yourself while you’re driving your car or riding on public transportation. Whisper it as a prayer before each meal. BIG GREEN LUCK EVERYWHERE. Chant it in rhythm to your steps as you walk. Murmur it to the tiny angel looking down at you from the ceiling just before you drop off to sleep. Yell it out as you’re dancing beneath the sky. BIG GREEN LUCK EVERYWHERE. It’ll work its magic even if you don’t know exactly why you’re saying it or what it means.

53;7<7 (May 21–June 20): This is an excellent time for you to revamp your relationship with your body. All the cosmic rhythms are aligned to help you. How should you go about it? The first thing to do is formulate your intentions. For example, would you like to feel more perfectly at home in your body? Would you revel in the freedom of knowing that the body you have is exactly right for your soul’s needs? Can you picture yourself working harder to give your body the food and sleep and movement it requires to be at its best? If you have any doubts about how to proceed, ask your body to provide you with clues.

1/<13@ (June 21–July 22): While growing up,

U.S. president Abraham Lincoln lived in Indiana for 14 years. The Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial commemorates his time there. When my friend Janet was seven years old, her second-grade class visited the place. While strolling around outside, she found a BandAid on the ground and excitedly assumed it had once graced a booboo on Old Abe himself. She took it home and secretly used it as a talisman. When she rubbed it on her own wounds, it seemed to have magical healing properties. Only later did she realize that Band-Aids weren’t invented until 55 years after Lincoln’s death. No matter. The artifact had done a superb job. I predict you will soon find a comparable placebo, Cancerian.

:3= (July 23–Aug. 22): Afghan farmers grow a lot of poppies—more than anywhere else in the world. While most of the crop is converted into opium and heroin, it could just as well be used to create poppy seed bagels— as many as 357 trillion of them by one estimate. The way I see it, Leo, you have a comparable choice ahead of you. A resource that’s neutral in its raw or natural state could be harnessed in a relatively good cause or a not-so-good cause. And I bet you will be instrumental in determining which way it goes. D7@5= (Aug. 23–Sept. 22): “Nothing is more conducive to peace of mind than not having any opinions at all. German aphorist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg said that, and now I’m offering it for you to use. Are you game? Try this experiment: For seven days, divest yourself of your opinions. And I mean all of them: opinions about politicians, celebrities, immigration reform, rockabilly music, your friends’ choices in mates—everything. For this grace period, be utterly non-judgmental and open-minded and tolerant. Allow everything to be exactly what it is without any need to wish it were otherwise. By experiment’s end, you’ll probably feel more relaxed than you have in a long time.

:70@/ (Sept. 23–Oct. 22): The Latin motto “Dulcius ex aspiris means “Sweetness out of difficulty. It has a different meaning from “relief after difficulty or “character-building from difficulty. It suggests a scenario in which a challenging experience leads not just to a successful outcome, but also to a delicious, soothing harmony that would not have been possible without the difficulty. This is what I foresee coming for you, Libra. A1=@>7= (Oct. 23–Nov. 21): Give the best gifts you can possibly give, Scorpio. Don’t hoard any of the intense blessings you have at your disposal. It’s time

to unveil the fullness of your idiosyncratic generosity . . . to bestow upon the world the naked glory of your complex mojo. Some people will be better able than others to receive and use your zesty offerings, and it’s OK to favor them with more of your magnanimity. On the other hand, don’t spend too long worrying about the fine points of how to disseminate your wealth. The important thing is to let it flow like a river fresh from eternity.

A/57BB/@7CA (Nov. 22–Dec. 21): “Do not think you will necessarily be aware of your own enlightenment, said Zen Buddhist teacher Dogen. Which leads me to say: “Do not think you will necessarily be aware of becoming a role model and potent influence. The way I see it, either of those developments may happen in the coming weeks. Without suffering any pangs of self-consciousness, you could suddenly find yourself thrust into a higher, brighter, more powerful state of being. I doubt there’ll be any stress or strain involved. Rather, it will naturally occur while you’re being your strong-minded, expansive self, trying simply to rearrange the world to conform to your vision of paradise. 1/>@71=@< (Dec. 22–Jan. 19): Soon it will probably be time for you to wrap up the Season of Exploration. You’ve surveyed the outlands and fringe areas enough for now, right? I’m guessing that you’ve reconnoitered the forbidden zones so thoroughly that you may not need to do any more probing. Or am I wrong about this? Am I underestimating your longing to push out to the frontiers and beyond? Maybe your brushes with exotic creatures and tempting adventures have whetted your appetite for even more escapades. I’ll tell you what, Capricorn: I’m going to trust your intuition on this one. Are you ready to rein in your risktaking, or are you hungry for more?

/?C/@7CA (Jan. 20–Feb. 18): When I was living in Los Angeles in the summer of 1986, I had a memorable dream. In the dream, I was dancing with God. As best as I can describe it, the Divine Wow was a female whirlwind exuding cool blue fire and singing ecstatic melodies. Now and then I caught a glimpse of something that resembled a face and body, but mostly she was a sparkling fluidic vortex that I moved in and out of as we floated and tumbled and leaped. The contact was so vivid and visceral that from that day forward I never again said, “I believe in God. My experience was as real as making love with a human being; “belief was irrelevant. I predict that you will soon have a comparable encounter with a primal force, Aquarius—whatever passes for “God in your world.

>7A13A (Feb. 19–March 20): The eighth-century theologian known as the Venerable Bede compared our existence to a sparrow that flies in the window of a royal castle while the king is enjoying a winter feast with his entourage. Outside, a snowstorm is raging. Inside, there’s a big fire in the hearth that keeps everyone warm. But the sparrow doesn’t stay in this welcoming place; it quickly flies out another window on the other side of the dining room, refraining from plucking any of the delicious scraps of food the revelers have discarded. Bede says that the sparrow’s actions are like ours in our own approach to living our lives. Well, guess what, Pisces: I don’t think that will be true for you in the coming months. Judging from the astrological omens, I suspect that once you fly into the feast room, you won’t depart like a restless, confused wanderer. You will linger. 6][Se]`Y( EVOb¸a bVS ]\S bVW\U g]c e]cZR QVO\US OP]cb g]c`aSZT WT g]c Q]cZR- /\R eVg QO\¸b g]c- 5] b] @SZOab`]Z]Ug Q][ O\R QZWQY Âľ3[OWZ @]P Âś

Pacific Sun Properties 734 Chestnut Street Santa Cruz, CA 95060 831.471.2424 831.471.0888 Fax www.pacificsunproperties.com

I was walking through some residential streets of downtown Santa Cruz on Sunday. A lazy, laid back Santa Cruz kind of day. I noticed that some of the houses had junk around, the sidewalks were dirty, spotty landscaping, paint peeling in places, a general hodge podge of styles and yard keeping. I was also thinking about the new ordinance which was passed at the last city council meeting. I trust you have heard of it: all rental units in the city are in line for city inspectors to enter and investigate the conditions found within, beginning in January 2011. Home owners are exempt if they do not have any rental units. They can rent out rooms or garages on their property, and not have to have anything inspected. Section 8 units need no inspections even if they violate zoning restrictions. Let me share some of the items on the proposed checklist of this passed ordinance—ordinance items are in italics—property must be clear of Scrap wood, metal and other items not intended for outdoor use. Have you left a house chair outside? I have a painting outside-is this forbidden? Some junk in the corner? Property must be clear of overgrown vegetation and weeds. Aunt Sue is 90 and has let her garden go a bit, has no money. Now what? What if you think weeds are pretty? What is overgrown? Electrical panel. Must be covered and have appropriate identification. Does it need a name tag? All windows must have proper weather protection, be in good condition with proper locks. Of course all the inspectors will be proper too. And unbiased. Walls must be free of holes. Hurry and fill that hole where a painting was. Foundations, no sagging or buckling. Hey Ms. Landlady, get over here, the floor is sloping, we need a new foundation! And no rent increase, please. Water heaters must have a finalized building permit. Ok Mr. Plumber let's not forget this, your license is not good enough, lets pay the city a fee too. What? Its 10 years old and you don't know if you have one?? Heating, portable units not accepted as adequate heating system. Mr. Landlord, no one has complained in the old house, but get in that central heater. Pronto. All mechanical equipment must function in the home including appliances, etc. You had better get rid of that old toaster oven that doesn't work anymore. Plumbing. You must have "proper"caulking. That means the real stuff! No Rodent harborage. Time to farm out that pet rat. Oh lets not forget the big wonderful bonus gently put: Zoning code issues may be identified during the inspection. All those zany, funky, sometimes even nice, illegal units. Maybe in perfect condition, even "proper" except for the small fact that they are too close to a property line, or the zoning does not allow....bye bye, and hello higher rents. It's not cheap to become proper you know. Next year, when I go for a stroll I will see everything is better! No junk, fresh paint, maybe the whole city will be beige, if the council so decides, beautiful plantings, and inside all is perfect. Oh, well maybe those neat old paned windows have been replaced with cheepy plastic, maybe the plants aren't real, maybe everyone is behind their properly locked dwellings, maybe the landfill is fuller with all the stuff we weren't supposed to have, but we will be warmer with our new heating systems, we will be able to identify our electrical panel, properly, all is well, whoops, move out of the way, artists and poor folk, those without the means to bring houses up to code are leaving, and where is our eclectic, vital, whacky old town, excuse me, or am I in the wrong town?
