HIS FEBRUARY, local organizers from the New Earth Exchange hope to launch a new currency in Santa Cruz—something they say could be a boon to the county’s economy and help shield Santa Cruz from big economic crises. The as-yet-unnamed money—we’ll call it Cruz Cash for now—will exist on three levels: as physical, hard-to-counterfeit cash; as electronic funds transferable on the Internet and as a plastic card readable at participating businesses. Supporters claim it could add as much as $1 million to the local economy. The 2007 economic crash and subsequent credit crunch were the catalysts for the idea. “When the economic crash happened, the amount of available capital was drastically reduced,� says Langdon Roberts, lead organizer at New Earth Exchange, a group of around 20 volunteers that has the support of Think Local First, Transitions Santa Cruz and Transitions San Lorenzo Valley. “Bringing capital into the county is a big focus of city government and people who are trying to make recovery happen. A rewards system like this actually creates instant capital,� says Roberts, who also heads up the Soquel-based Center for Transformational Neurophysiology. The money will only be good at locally owned companies and between county residents. Its primary purpose, says Roberts, is to support local businesses and put cash in the hands of people who want to work but either can’t find a job or need a microloan to launch a business. For Roberts, a biofeedback specialist, making health care cheaper has also been a big motivation. Cruz Cash will join a growing list of alternative currencies in California, including Humboldt Exchange, Sand Dollars of Bolinas, Santa Barbara Community Currency, Mendocino Mula, Sonoma Rewards Dollars and the Bay Area Currency Exchange. The local money is modeled after Sonoma’s Rewards Dollars. Launched in 2007, Rewards Dollars can only be spent at locally owned businesses,

thereby trapping wealth inside the wineinfused region. Some 2,500 alternative exchange systems operate worldwide. Some, like the Bay Area’s Timebanks USA, use an hour of work as their base denomination. New York’s similarly designed Ithaca Hours are so well established that last year the local transit system began to accept them as payment. Whether Cruz Cash is also successful largely depends on how many local businesses and residents sign up. Annual membership dues in the cooperative that will print and manage the new money will cost around $10 for individuals and $150 for businesses that make less than $100,000. Fees for large businesses are still being discussed. With their membership, each business will be given a stack of Cruz Cash, or electronic credits put in their online account. The amount will depend on each firm’s credit limit (determined primarily by size and longevity)—and it requires zero collateral. The money is initiated the moment businesses hand it out as a product discount to customers, who can spend it at any other business in the co-op’s network—or in the informal economy. The system is very similar to a rewards card. The major differences are that while ordinary rewards end up in the trash once they’ve been used, Cruz Cash will be reusable and will have a cash component. With some 200 locals already interested in becoming members, the Cruz Cash, or “rewards,� might be spent at a restaurant or the farmers market, on plumbing, health care services or a backdoor deal. The one place it definitely can’t be spent is at a

business not based in the county. For this reason, Peter Beckmann, cofounder of Think Local First, thinks Cruz Cash could provide a big boost for locally owned companies. “It makes people focus on local spending, so the currency can definitely have an impact,� says Beckmann. A study done in Austin, Texas, by the private economic analysis firm Civic Economics found that spending $100 at a locally owned business keeps $45 circulating locally, while spending $100 at a chain only keeps $14 around town. Despite the well-known benefits of shopping local, it’s not easy for people to pass up cheaper goods at Costco, Best Buy, Ross and the like—particularly during tough times. Julie Kellman, owner of Seascape Foods in Aptos, says she likes the discountbased system that New Earth Exchange is proposing because it adds a financial incentive to shopping local. “Consumers have a great idea to support locals, but it’s easier to go to bigger chains,� said Kellman, who plans to sign her business up for New Earth’s cooperative. “The more we can give consumers reasons and maybe a little bit of pressure to shop local, it can benefit the whole community in general.�

ANTA CRUZ chefs are fiercely devoted to local, fresh, organic produce for their menus. And while that sort of culinary pickiness might challenge cooks in other parts of the country, our restaurants are surrounded by a bounty of organic growers who have cultivated close relationships with chefs over the years. Farm-to-table isn’t just another culinary fad here. It’s a way of life. The hand-raised lamb and artisanal cheeses from chef/rancher Rebecca King may be found on Beverlie Terra’s Chaminade menus. Fogline Farm, high above Soquel, supplies free-range and pastured chicken and pork to a select circle of Santa Cruz chefs. Some names—Dirty Girl, Lindencroft, Freewheelin’, Blue Heron—punctuate almost any conversation involving top local chefs.

Brad Briske at Main Street Garden CafĂŠ is one of the lucky chefs, who can walk into his own organic kitchen garden behind the restaurant and pick fresh tomatoes, herbs, zucchini blossoms and specialty items throughout the year. Briske, long a devotee of small local growers, lays it out. “Currently half our produce is supplied by Lindencroft Farm, or one of the many farmers market growers,â€? he says. “Route One, Dirty Girl, Live Earth and Freewheelin’ are my favorites.â€? If it’s not from his garden or one of these organic farms, he says, “it’s not on the menu.â€? Briske also sources local ranchers for pastured pigs, rabbits and ducks so that he can create his own cured meat specialties. ¨ !

Katherine Stern, chef at La Posta and veteran of a two-star Michelin kitchen in Montemerano, Italy, looks to Blue Heron Farms for lettuces and Fogline Farms for chickens. She also works closely with growers to fuel her Italian-influenced menu with rare and intriguing ingredients. “Route One Farms is nice enough to pick nettles for me,� she says, “and we use Freewheelin’ Farms and Four Sisters for herbs, purslane and arugula, and a local mushroom forager.� Nestled between Santa Cruz and Davenport, Freewheelin’ Farm is one of chef Charlie Parker’s key sources of fog-loving crops, such as arugula, chard, collards, kale, broccoli, spinach, strawberries, leeks and baby beets. The celebrated 8 acres just north of town were pioneered five years ago by retrogrowers Kirstin Yogg, Amy Courtney and Darryl Wong, who currently serve such dining rooms as La Posta, Oswald, Avanti and Gabriella in addition to Parker’s Cellar Door, which was recently featured in a New York Times article exploring the chef ’s meticulous attention to local ingredients.

The Lindencroft Mystique Linda Butler of Ben Lomond’s 1 1/2acre Lindencroft Farm admits that developing close and continuing relationships with specific restaurants works strategically for the farm she runs with her husband, Steve. “It’s really good for a small farm like ours, because we don’t do the farmers markets,â€? she says. In addition to Briske at Main Street, Butler supplies Parker and Tim Edmunds at Davenport Roadhouse. “We grow a huge variety of vegetables,â€? she says. “Right now the big thing is peppers. We have 60 different kinds of heirloom peppers.â€? Butler continues to supply renowned seasonal items to Sean Baker, former chef of Gabriella, now at Berkeley’s Gather. Illustrating the delivery process, Butler explains, “I call and tell him what I’ve got, and they tell me what they need. Sometimes, since I know what he likes to work with, I just try to decide the amounts he might need. And I try to vary the items so he can have a choice of special items.â€? La Veque, a local legend for his intensely flavored sausages made from locally sourced, pastured pigs, cows, goats and lambs, believes that “nothing can compare with Lindencroft’s fresh harvests. The chiles are absolutely amazing.�

Famed for richly flavored dryfarmed tomatoes, small tender root crops and impeccable heirloom shelling beans, Dirty Girl Farm supplies scores of top restaurants and a dozen farmers markets Playing Dirty Dirty Girl Farm’s Joe Schirmer is another favorite of Santa Cruz and Bay Area chefs. Famed for richly flavored dryfarmed tomatoes, small tender root crops and impeccable heirloom shelling beans, Schirmer’s sunny La Selva fields supply scores of top restaurants and a dozen farmers markets. “My sales manager gets texts, phone calls and emails constantly— about 40 to 50 orders each week from restaurants alone,� Schirmer says. Schirmer has groomed his relationships with his clients. “I know who loves the baby carrots, and I pick specifically for those restaurants when we go to the markets.� There the orders are picked up for menus throughout the week. “They either call up or we just

pick for them according to what they’ve liked in the past. We do eight farmers markets, so they can phone in and we’ll have it waiting for them.� Each restaurant has its own style of access, Schirmer says. “Some need deliveries, some love coming to the market and seeing what’s fresh and new. Ben Sims from Avanti always comes to the market to see the produce. Brad Briske is another one who checks out our harvests, plus Damani Thomas from Oswald, Katherine Stern from La Posta and Santos Majano from Soif.�

Love Apples and More Cynthia Sandberg, whose biodynamic Love Apple Farm annually offers seedling sales of over 100 heirloom tomato varieties, embarked on a rare alliance several years ago. She is the primary restaurant garden for Manresa, the two-star Michelin restaurant in Los Gatos fueled by celebrated Santa Cruz–based chef David Kinch. A recent move of the farm to be closer to the restaurant—15 minutes away—is still a work in progress. “We have been busy these last five months terracing, doing repairs, constructing fences, stairs between terraces, garden bed building and double-digging,â€? she says. “We just started planting out winter veggies a couple of weeks ago.â€? The new acres will allow Sandberg to fine-tune her harvests to Kinch’s demanding specifications. “We’ve got the space to install a permanent large asparagus bed, many fruit trees, many different types of berries, even meat animals such as pigs, lambs, goats and chickens. We now have three new dairy goats and are learning how to create chèvre for him.â€? Sandberg supplies Kinch with close to 10 dozen eggs a week from her biodynamic farm. And she’s willing to take on strange requests, such as Kinch’s new favorite, the rare Litchi, a sister of the tomato that Sandberg says “is tomatillo-esque in that it has a husk, but it turns red when ripe rather than green.â€? Such close relationships make the difference on Santa Cruz restaurant tables, which is why you can always find Avanti chef Ben Sims, right at opening time, at the Westside Farmers Market. They look like celery. We’re just using the stalks right now, but they have great flavor and we use them in our seafood platters, and they’re a complement to the seafood because they have a natural saltiness to them. EVOb R] g]c bVW\Y ^S]^ZS Z]dS OP]cb g]c` `SabOc`O\bIt’s a family of people that have been here for 20 years. I see a lot of family and love put into this place, and we’re trying to put out the best, organic, sustainable food that we can get our hands on. EV]¸a g]c` VS`] QVSTI could say Mike Weller. He was a culinary instructor at the CCA when I went there, and I looked up to him because he was enthusiastic and proud about working in a kitchen.

A deconstructed sushi would be when you have a strip of nori on one plate, rice on one plate and fish on another, and you just have these bits and pieces and put them together yourself. It’s just something I’ve never gotten into. If we have something that tastes good together, why would you want to take it apart? 4Od]`WbS WbS[ ]\ bVS [S\c bVWa eSSYTraditional polpette, which is Italian for meatballs. They’re a mix of veal, beef, a little milk, salt and pepper, and a little bit of bread crumbs, seared in a hot pan, then braised with the pan Marzano tomato sauce. It’s spaghetti and meatballs! You can’t go wrong with that. ¨

Linwood’s at Chaminade EVOb¸a g]c` Qc``S\b TOd]`WbS W\U`SRWS\bI think cheese. Freshly made sheep’s cheese or goat’s, because you can do anything with it. You can put it on pizza, eat it on its own, bake it, fry it. But really, really fresh cheese—it’s my dream to have a cheese cave. I’ve made fresh mozzarella and ricotta, I’ve wanted to make feta but haven’t had the time or the goat. EVOb R] g]c bVW\Y ^S]^ZS Z]dS OP]cb g]c` `SabOc`O\bProbably the view! But we’re also doing a lot of sustainable and local farms on our menus. I think people come for the view and stay for the food. EV]¸a g]c` VS`] QVSTI go for chefs from the ’60s and ’70s, so you’re talking about Julia Child and Margaret Fox. I’m more for chefs that are not classically trained; Julia Child wasn’t and she was a great chef. She didn’t get involved with cooking until she was in her late 50s, and I’m also one who wasn’t classically trained. Margaret Fox was one of the pioneers in slow food cooking, and using farmers and locally farmed foods—I always go for the pioneers. <O[S O T]]R b`S\R g]c¸`S ]dS` I’d have to say down-home food, like comfort food. I think it’s a poor excuse for serving more low-quality and inexpensive food—it’s an excuse for restaurants to serve meatloaf or something like that, things like serving beef stew. Some people can do it well but that doesn’t mean everyone should do it. 4Od]`WbS WbS[ ]\ bVS [S\c bVWa eSSYPork chop wrapped in pancetta. How can you go wrong with pork wrapped in pork? It’s just the most flavorful thing—and it’s served with a light demi-jus, a reduced veal stock that’s almost just an essence. Something else that’s on right now that I like is a Fairfax salad, with a fresh burrata cheese. It’s a mozzarella filled with creamy mozzarella, so when you bite into it you have these two textures. We’re serving it with heirloom tomatoes and a pesto sauce.

Juliette (Patricia Clarkson), the wife of a UN employee stuck in the Gaza Strip, is at loose ends in the Egyptian capital. Fortunately the husband’s former friend Tareq (Alexander Siddiq) can show her the sights. Clarkson’s mix of assurance and girlishness is unique, but she has to work that mixture too hard here. Kindhearted social worker Emily Jenkins (RenÊe Zellweger) brings home an abused 10-yearold girl only to discover that her parents had several good reasons for trying to send her back to hell and that her baggage might be hard to handle without a few lakes of holy water. The new documentary Catfish does for social networking what 1999’s Blair Witch Project did for hand-held film. It deals with the problem of the realer-than-real illusion imparted by documentaries and social networking. The narrow field of vision and depth in portable cameras creates some haunting images: the Michigan town, under flat blue skies, is as empty as the plaza in a de Chirico painting. The sequence of the team exploring a deserted farmhouse, by the green light of night vision at 3am, creates stomach-turning tension. The payoff is diabolically plausible and definitely tragic: there’s true horror in such a pitiful need for recognition. Because of the complexity of this operation, the team s forced to create dreams within dreams, and each deeper dream takes place in an exponentially larger time frame. The film is audacious and frequently thrilling, especially when Nolan folds Paris in on itself and Escherizes interior spaces. Los Alamos, N.M., in the winter of 1983. Raised by a drunken but pious single mom, Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee) is getting to the stage where he’s less interested in candy and more interested in knives. Skinny, pale and with disturbingly wideset eyes, he is a natural target for bullies. This is when Abby (Chloe Moretz) shows up. She’s a pale girl with dirty bare feet, and she only comes out at night. What Owen doesn’t know is that Abby’s father (Richard Jenkins) is a serial killer who ritually murders his victims, draining their blood into a jug. Let Me In, of course, makes the Twilight saga look worse than it does already. All in all, Reeves does a fine job of delivering the forlornness, solitude and shame of this story, which only uses the word “vampire� once: the focus is not on blood for blood’s sake but on the tragedy of inexplicable need. in a small city along the Toulon-Paris train line, we see a no-longer-young construction worker, Jean (Vincent Lindon), demolishing a house. We see his wife, AnneMarie (Aure Atika), at her assembly line. Later, the two join up with their son, picnicking as he tries to puzzle out a tricky grammar question as a school assignment. At a show-and-tell day at his son’s school, Jean is asked to explain his work to a classroom of eager kids. The camera focuses on the intense elementary school teacher, the rootless and 40ish mademoiselle Veronique Chambon (the ever-poised Sandrine Kiberlain)—and we see it, a coup de foudre: she’s fallen in love. Director Stèphane BrizÊ’s Mademoiselle Chambon is a tragedy too sad to weep at. The complexities and depths give this film a vigor that belies the lightweightsounding story. It’s Blake Lively, as an Oxycontin-fancying tramp, who gets the brunt of Hamm’s power; she does some excellent reacting to a little bar-side lecture Hamm gives about a $20 bill. Rebecca Hall has too much presence to be just the girl whose entry into the plot causes friction between the two main thieves.

(R; 102 min.) After seeing this documentary by Amir Bar-Lev you realize Pat Tillman, the San Jose–raised football-player-turned– Green Beret, was only superficially an ordinary jock. He was actually a reader of Emerson and Thoreau, the kind of eccentric who didn’t own a cell phone and who did without a car when he was in college. Shading this story is the cowardice both of the Bush-era State Department and the U.S. Army. Together, they’re responsible for a cover-up of hideo-comic ineptitude. They first tried to fob off Tillman’s likely preventable death as a Silver Star–worthy moment of valor. Then they changed the story to include an incident

Chinese remake of the Coen brothers debut Blood Simple by Zhang Yimou. It is a strange, strange movie, and that’s not just because of the flamboyant color scheme. In the middle ages, the wife (Yan Ni) of the desert town’s master, a perverted ugly miser Wang (Ni Dahong), is carrying on with the noodle shop’s “intern,� a gulping, pinkclad coward in elf-shoes Li (Xiao Shenyang). Prowling around the perimeter is a bad cop (Honglei Sun) who is ready to make some money on the side, and he isn’t above the occasional double-cross. It has its moments: one is a showstopper about the making of noodles that looks as tricky as a circus act. (RvB)

But now and then I’ll get a message like this: “I’ve followed your horoscopes with pleasure for years. But I must say, you’ve really lost it lately. I can’t stand the garbage you’ve been slinging. What happened to you?� My response is to wonder why the person never wrote to me while he was happy with my efforts. It reminds me of a quote by Leon Uris: “How often in life it is that we have no time for our friends but all the time in the world for our enemies.� It also reminds me of how tempting it is to focus on what repels us and scares us, shortchanging the dreams that excite us. Your assignment in the next four weeks, Aries, is to reward what you like and pursue what you want. For now, forget about what you don’t like and don’t want. B/C@CA (April 20–May 20): The worst painting in history is hanging in San Francisco’s De Young Museum. It is Noel and Bob by Joan Brown. It’s so awkwardly garish and trivially monstrous that I can only conclude Brown possessed what might be termed “negative genius.� It’s not just that she had no talent. She actually had the opposite of brilliant talent. And yet I must confess I had a good time gazing at this anti-artistic botch. I thoroughly enjoyed laughing at it, and was quite pleased at the jokes my companions and I made about it. I suggest that in the coming week you try something similar: enjoying the entertainment value and educational merit of clumsy, ungainly, out-of-whack stuff. Doing so will sharpen your wits for the not-too-distant future, when you will come into proximity to a lot of understated beauty and elegance and grace. 53;7<7 (May 21–June 20): Is my enjoyment of the Temptations’ song “My Girl� diminished by the fact that it was used in a commercial for Sun Maid Raisins? Does Jose Gonzalez’ tune “Heartbeats� evoke less feeling in me because I know it was used as the soundtrack for a Sony TV commercial? Well, yeah, actually. The songs haven’t been totally wrecked for me, but neither do they make my heart soar anymore. Is there anything like that in your life, Gemini? Some pure and innocent pleasure that has been tainted or watered down? Believe it or not, you could restore it to its original state in the coming weeks.
