The Jolly Old Saint Trick He sees everything you do, judges your behavior and performs miracles. Sound familiar? 0G 9/B3 8/1=0A=<
F
OR SEVERAL centuries the American folkloric tradition has held that on Christmas Eve, one man pulled by a team of f lying reindeer has delivered presents springing forth from a single sack to all the good little children of the world. Against all odds, people have bought in. It’s not turning water into wine or parting the Red Sea, but Santa Claus sure has a following. The cult of Santa has infiltrated much of the Western population, but instead of sparking 60 Minutes specials and court prosecutions, it’s promoted by ad agencies, the state and parents. And it’s powerful. Straight from the days when folklore was king, Santa Claus packs as much meaning as any ancient story. Just ask the experts, who have seen through Santa’s shtick for years. UCSC classics professor Mary-Kay Gamel has made a name for herself analyzing Greek drama. Rife with complexes and characters who don’t listen to their oracles, Greek myth finds a trusty plot device in theoxeny—the god coming down to earth. “In the eighth book of Ovid there’s the myth of Baucis and Philemon,â€? says Gamel. “Jupiter and Saturn come down and ask for hospitality of all these villagers and are denied, but Baucis and Philemon are a pious couple who let them in even though they’re poor.â€? In gratitude, their house is turned into a temple while their neighbors drown. Narratives of judgment are classic and plentiful, and Santa Claus is part of one that restates that hospitality is a virtue, and that those cookies and milk by the fireplace probably shouldn’t be ¨ ! forgotten. The reward is that fancy new iPad.

The theoxeny of Santa has clear connections to earlier myths found in Nordic, classical and biblical systems. From the pious Greek St. Nicholas of Myra (a bishop who distributed gifts to the needy) to the randy satyr Silenus (the booze-loving tutor of Dionysus who stumbled into King Midas’ palace) and all the way down through Dutch Sinterklaas (who rode over rooftops on Dec. 6 on a white horse), he’s a jolly composite of several theological traditions. And he happens to fit nicely into our political economic system.
The Magical GiftGiving Tour Jack Santino, professor in the department of popular culture at Bowling Green University in Ohio and the current Tocqueville-Fulbright Distinguished Chair at the University of Paris-Sorbonne, has done extensive research into holidays and public ritual for the past 30 years. He brings up Santa’s well-known connection to capitalism, which thrives in the season of giving. “Christmas is the most important economic period of the year for our U.S capitalistic society, Santino writes in an email. “And as we all know, many businesses depend on the Christmas trade for their continued existence. Santa magically creating and distributing gifts both enacts this reality and masks it. So the economy’s well-being is in the hands of a myth? “I wouldn’t call it a myth, exactly,
continues Santino. “Santa Claus is unusual—the story is told as truth to children, but presumably not believed in by adults. That said, watch a few Christmas movies and see how often the story involves adults coming to believe in Santa. Santa Claus is a story grownups invented out of the many standards of tradition (St. Nicholas, pre-Christian winter figures and gods, other gift-bearers) that we tell children is true and then tell ourselves, imaginatively, it is true.â€? In other words Santa, presumably a construct created for kids, has enormous relevance to adults. Enter the Rev. Cordelia Strandskov of First Congressional Church of Santa Cruz, childhood receiver of a single stocking’s worth of gifts every Christmas and benevolent Santa’s helper to a younger sister. Rev. Strandskov’s Christmas is about the biblical birth of Christ, but Santa is an aside that doesn’t detract from her message. “The spiritual side of Santa is this idea that he gives you a gift that celebrates you as a child, even if you are sometimes naughty and imperfect,â€? says Strandskov. “If I were explaining it to Sunday school I’d say that we don’t always deserve the gifts we get, but we get them out of love. God loves us anyway, and the presents are symbolic of the Christ child’s gift to us.â€? Santa Claus is attached to Dec. 25, which in the beginning was strictly a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Since then the mainstream has picked up on a Christmas minus Jesus. A ¨ #

1=D 3 @ AB= @G j = : 2 A/ 7 < B B @ 7 1 9 nondenominational Santa Claus and universal thumbs-up toward presents are traditions that can be performed on television shows and in front of courthouses without any backlash. However, not all Christians are thrilled with the co-opting of their holiday, and Strandskov admits she wouldn’t be surprised if some families have evicted Santa as a snake in the grass, a distraction from religious values. But the minister preaches appropriation the same as did Pope Julius I, who in the year 350 declared the date of Christ’s birth to coincide with the festivals of pagan Romans, and the pill of conversion was swallowed that much easier knowing the festivals wouldn’t be taken away. So believing in an unexplainable being as a child is a good transition to believing in an unexplainable being as an adult, and the faithful get to keep their sense of mystery. “It’s good practice for the faith that they might be asked in the future to have in Christianity, Strandskov says. “There’s the mystery of how it can happen, and we have to have faith that this man flies down our chimneys and gives presents to all the children of the world in one night. How he does it is the mystery.
Guilt Fee So Santa knows when you’ve been bad or good, and the Christian God says the very hairs of your head are all numbered. The parallels come together in an intrinsic battle between good and evil, rewarded by presents and salvation or punished by eternal damnation. And coal is pretty much damnation. Judgment has been passed off to an omnipotent figure who knows what you’ve done even if fellow mortals don’t—a holiday guilt trip springing from Judeo-Christian philosophical innovations. “The ancient classical world was not entirely clear on conscience, says Gamel. “They had the idea that if you don’t get caught there is no sin—a shame culture. Guilt is more typical of Judaism and Christianity, which have this idea of God, where he’s there all the time, allknowing. Maybe the Greeks wouldn’t like Santa Claus. Today the world of the ancient Greeks is seen through a lens of meddling gods navigating through politics and private agendas, chasing maidens like it was going out of style and conspiring against humans, all reflections for sets of cultural values seen throughout a tumultuous rise and fall. In 1,000 years,
what will our stories reflect? “Myths give us ways to think about the world, perhaps primarily justifying the ways things are, but also as alternatives to what we have, says Gamel. “I’d say Santa Claus simultaneously suggests that presents— the material proof of love—are good, but also questions whether the family connection for presents is necessary. Perhaps a further-away figure can understand whether we’re ‘naughty or nice’ better than those who are closer.
It’s for the Children Santino confirms the religious vein that flows through the Santa story and brings up additional modern cultural references. “Santa reinforces the nuclear family structure, with an emphasis on children, Santino says. “He leaves the gifts under the tree, for the kids. How many photographs are taken of them tearing into their Christmas gifts? And how many of the child sitting on the department store Santa’s lap? Is it a coincidence that the sacred symbol of Christmas is a divine child, also represented as a nuclear family? In addition to the notion “children are good, Santino observes that the Santa tradition reinforces socially affirming concepts of generosity, charity and peace on earth. Santa is an idealization of us, and is the harbinger of what we’re reaching for. It’s nothing but a story, but it’s still something to believe in—and if the belief is missing, the practice is strong enough to continue anyway. “Do you give presents? Gamel asks in the middle of our conversation. Most people with a Sinterklaas figure in their consciousness do. “I don’t like to, but I feel like I should, Gamel continues. “So there is a certain belief system at work here. The holiday and the man have been adapting for hundreds of years. The spending and the giving are patterns of Western societal behavior reflected in myth, and while the chorus laments the passing of the holiday spirit into the gutters of materialism, the story of Santa has been evolving since Christmas incorporated the traditions of sunworshiping Gaels and a Greek saint gave gifts to the poor. It is what societies make it, but it’s also helping to make society. Thus the audience enacts the performance of culture. But that’s enough deep stuff for now. It’s time to go set out some milk and cookies, because you never know who’s going to come calling.0

;7AA7<5 ;C@/:A MY NEW career as mural detective started, as such things do, with a morsel of intriguing information. In the course of writing about 32C/@2= 1/@@7::=’s retrospective at the Museum of Art & History last year I saw an image (above) of the mural that Carrillo and his UCSC students painted in the tunnel entrance to El Palomar Restaurant in downtown Santa Cruz and learned that, decades ago, this powerful work, called Birth, Death and Regeneration, was painted over. Months later, while researching the history of murals in the United States for a grant-writing project, I realized that, in California at least, murals have been as close to a Rosetta Stone of social evolution as this young culture has. The Old World had a thousand years to make stone buildings with faces of the mighty peeking down from parapets. In the left coast of the New World, though, a freeway overpass or the concrete wall of a tiltup civic building might be as significant a site on which to depict the faces of The People. The mural tradition in the United States was inspired by the Mexican Muralist movement of the 1930s, a time of great turmoil when the Mexican government commissioned artists to paint inspirational or political imagery on walls of public institutions. This flowering of art by such mighty painters as 2735= @7D3@/, 2/D72 A7?C37@=A and 8=A3 =@=H1= was a model for the program in U.S. public buildings funded by FDR’s Works Progress Administration, the source of some of the country’s most beloved public art. The most famous WPA murals in the Bay Area reside in San Francisco’s Coit Tower, and also include the /<B=< @34@3573@ murals in the Rincon Center and the frescos by :C173< :/0/C2B in what is now the Beach Chalet. In Santa Cruz, the 63<@73BB/ A6=@3 murals in the Santa Cruz Post Office lobby were commissioned by a program that grew out of the WPA, the Treasury Relief Art Project of 1935. Shore’s murals honor the laborers in local fields, fisheries and quarries. Since that time, murals on public buildings have largely been funded by local ordinances or by private funding. Murals on private property are often a business owner’s gift to the neighborhood, depicting local scenes and characters. Businesses change, however, and many beloved murals have been lost. I am now researching these lost murals in order to recapture them for history. If you remember a mural that once resided in Santa Cruz County but is no longer, please contact me at mo.davidson@sbcglobal.net with as much detail as you remember. The outcome of this research will reside in the MAH’s historical archive and in a national database for public art, assuring the art its proper place in history. Read more at KUSP.org/exhibitionist. (Maureen Davidson)

From irresistibly funky and swinging blues numbers to soulful, warm-upthe-chilly-night slow jams and a dash of good old rock & roll, the music of Mike Renwick is comfortably situated in the realm of music that makes you move. Taking inspiration from some of R&B’s most famous names including Al Green, Tower of Power and Average White Band, the blue-eyed soul guitarist, vocalist and bandleader will be packing the dance oor and the stage as he plays a pre-holiday concert with his aptly named Big Ass Horn Band. Don Quixote’s; $10 adv/$12 door; 7:30pm. (Cat Johnson)
The righteous shadow of the late Joe Strummer looms imposingly over contemporary punk rock, but few do right by his considerable legacy. San Francisco’s multilingual ďŹ ve-piece La Plebe are the exception, turning out anthemic punk that is instantly classic yet very much of our time. The band has plenty of political and social grist to work with, focusing on working class concerns and the debate over immigration in songs that are as rousing as they are thoughtful. La Plebe’s latest release, Brazo En Brazo, ďŹ nds the band honing its already realized sound into an incredibly potent weapon in the culture wars. The Catalyst; $6 adv/$8 door; 9pm. =<3 :=D3 @355/3 B6C@A2/G For the roots faithful in Santa Cruz, One Love Reggae Night is quickly becoming the place to be on Thursday nights. Featuring resident DJs Rudi B., Kelau and Adam Twelve on the decks, the weekly event showcases rootsreggae, dancehall and remixes played for a packed house of reggae-heads, dancers and locals out for a good time. Toss into the mix the Cypress Lounge’s landmark patio, the late kitchen, the full bar and no cover charge, and the stage is set for a conscious party of massive proportions. B63 =0A3AA=@A Given their fascination with horror-ďŹ lm kitsch, you’d be forgiven for mistaking local outďŹ t the Obsessors for yet another monochromatic psychobilly act, but that would be missing the point. The pluckish ďŹ ve-piece resides in a much more interesting place, reanimating discarded bits of garage-rock grime, Devostyle space age anxiety and Runawaysworthy spunk. Lead singer Cobra Lily has just the right mix of snottiness and snarl, while the band provides a simple yet effective bedrock for her songs about zombie fatalities, undead babies and Alex Jones-worthy conspiratorial paranoia. While it’s nothing groundbreaking, the Obsessors are a textbook example of the effectiveness of execution over innovation. Blue Lagoon; $5; 8pm. (PMD)

B63 1=447A 0@=B63@A Let’s say someone took the Santa Cruz Mountain–grown vintage Americana of The Devil Makes Three, mixed it with the familial element of the Avett Brothers and sprinkled in a taste of Old Crow Medicine Show hero-worship. They just might have
come up with something that sounds like the Coffis Brothers. Born and bred in Ben Lomond, Jamie and Kellen Coffis ďŹ rst debuted their boot-tapping folk rock on KPIG’s Please Stand By radio show. Jamie, the elder, plays keyboard and younger Kellen doles out doleful riffs on harmonica while strumming a guitar. % 1=;3 On their way to becoming the Crepe Place’s house band thanks to their Tuesday night residency, local Hammond organ trio 7 Come 11 turn out an engaging amalgam of funk, jazz and jam-rock with swaths of ’70s rock thrown in for good measure. Guitarist Danny Mayer, drummer Kris Di Noto and Hammond player Gianni Staiano keep things rooted with down-low grooves that leave ample space for experimentation and improvisation. Appropriate given the band’s Lady Luck– invoking name, 7 Come 11 perform with an assurance that comes naturally when all the players are conďŹ dent in their alchemy-producing musical rapport. :3 0=3C4 0@=B63@A After spending the ďŹ rst 18 years of their lives in and around the Santa Cruz jazz scene, Remy and Pascal Le Boeuf (saxophone and piano, respectively) relocated to New York and made quite a splash in the jazz world with their fresh and modern approach to composition. The identical twins pair a solid knowhow of fundamentals with bold, innovative playing that melds elements of classical, rock, jazz and electronic music. Combining unusual time signatures and nontraditional inuences with post-production studio sculpting, the Le Boeuf Brothers are drawing as many comparisons to Radiohead and other boundary-blurring bands as they are straight-ahead jazz artists. Film Capsules <3E 1/>A B63 />/@B;3<B (1960) In this classic Billy Wilder movie, an ambitious young businessman, C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon), devises an unconventional scheme he hopes will help him climb the corporate ladder: allowing executives from the insurance company he works for to use his apartment for their extramarital trysts. Complications arise when Miss Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), also a company employee and the mistress of one of Baxter’s managers, attempts suicide in the apartment and Baxter must nurse her back to health. (PG; 85 min.) Jack Black plays a writer on assignment in the Bermuda Triangle in this modern remake of
the Jonathan Swift story about a shipwrecked sailor. In the book, Gulliver washes ashore in series of strange lands, each more bizarre than the last. First he find himself in the land of the tiny Lilliputians, then of the gigantic Brobdingnags and finally in a place where wise horses, called Houyhnhnms, rule over the humanlike Wild Yahoos. Things go awry when Macy’s event coordinator Doris Walker (Maureen O’Hara) begins to suspect that Kringle fancies himself the real Santa Claus. (R; 103 min.) Apparently from the annals of the Gotham City Ballet: facing the dual role in a production of Swan Lake, a virginal ballerina (Natalie Portman) cracks. On one side she’s muscled by her heartless,
sexually harassing director (a convincing Vincent Cassel); on the other, she’s smothered by her mother (Barbara Hershey). And then a new dancer (Mila Kunis) arrives from San Francisco to inspire sexual panic and precipitate disaster. In the rehearsal scenes, the camera spins around with the dancers, and we hear the scuffing of their feet and their harsh panting, or we watch in close-up as a slipper is stabbed, sliced and stitched into shape. It’s ballet as murderous ordeal. It’s only when the music starts up that Black Swan starts to feel like a great movie, simply because the Tchaikovsky would make us believe anything. Director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler) takes this 1940ish plot about a frigid woman going nuts so very seriously that he probably should have done without the borrowings

Left behind are two younger children, Lucy (Georgie Henley) and Edmund (Skandar Keynes), who are billeted with their hateful cousin Eustace (Will Poulter). Inundated by an enchanted painting, Lucy, Edmund and Eustace end up bobbing in the sea right next to the Narnian navy vessel containing Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes). Eventually, seven golden swords have to be rescued and placed on the altar of Aslan. There are times when the Narnia movies are as good as CGI gets. It’s shot with braced but fluid camerawork. Naomi Watts’ performance as Plame is one of the year’s best. Between the Sept. 11 attacks and the Iraq invasion, members of the CIA ask the independent consultant Joseph Wilson (Sean Penn) to go to Niger to confirm confidential reports of
uranium being sent to Saddam Hussein. Wilson quickly discovers there was no such shipment. In a Nixonian attempt to silence a whistleblower, high Bush administration figures leak the name of Wilson’s wife, Victoria Plame, to columnist Robert Novak, a move that destroys her career and puts her operations in jeopardy. Ward, who’s been training all his life with his half-brother Dicky, is in a career lull as a “stepping-stone fighter, used as a boxer for other boxers to leapfrog over. Unfortunately, the single most flabbergasting part comes early on: an armada on broomsticks breaking through the cloud ceiling, straight into a dogfight of death-eaters. In the middle, the trio hides in the countryside amid blasted heaths and burned-out trailers, and things start to resemble Twilight before the
film gets on its feet again. The startling Balinese-style puppet animation of the title’s fable is a highlight of the series. Grint, the clumsy/suave best pal Ron Weasley, seems to be growing into another Malcolm McDowell. Our beautiful Snape (Alan Rickman) towers over his evil cohort. Pseudo-sophisticated romance by Edward Zwick, loosely adapted from Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman by Jamie Reidy. In the 1990s, a breezy Pittsburgh-based pharma-salesman (Jake Gyllenhaal) and a freespirited lady (Anne Hathaway) meet in a doctor’s office. A hot yet hostile relationship breaks out. But Jamie quickly diagnoses what’s eating Maggie: she has stage one Parkinson’s and is determined to have a reckless good time while her body holds out. Hathaway could have carried this as light comedy, but she comes on furious and knocks this unsteady movie flat. And she’s not a sweeping force meeting an equal,
opposite reaction in Gyllenhaal, who is about as deep as Jason Biggs from the American Pie movies. Under the direction of the nice guy who created Thirtysomething, it carries the kind of happy ending you’d need a happiness drug to accept. (RvB) % 6=C@A (R; 94 min.) 127 Hours is director Danny Boyle’s version of the true-life story of climber Aron Ralston. In spring 2003, Ralston was pinned under a half-ton boulder in a remote Utah canyon; what he did to survive became worldwide news. 127 Hours records an ordeal so singular, Poe couldn’t improve on it. Unfortunately, Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) tries to blow up the story’s elemental horror through pyrotechnics. He starts with a burst of relentless motion, as in his Trainspotting. Unfortunately, this ADD style has been thoroughly appropriated for sportsdrink commercials. James Franco’s visceral acting in the service of this horror story probably should be praised, even if it’s not a pleasure to watch. One would have to be fairly simple-minded to think of this ghastly story as some kind of triumph of the human spirit. (RvB) B63 A=17/: <3BE=@9 (PG-13; 2
hrs.) Fiendishly clever and funny movie about the creation of an Internet monster. As Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Jesse Eisenberg gives a master class on recessive acting: he’s beady eyed and covert, with the occasional pit-viper-like sway of a truculent, lowered forehead. It’s the kind of remorseless superiority that can only look comically childish and wounded onscreen. The film shuttles between the present-day deposition of the now arrogantly rich Zuckerberg, as he’s sued by a quartet of burned partners (among them his former best friend Eduardo, played by Andrew Garfield).

Later, Zuckerberg meets the founder of Napster, Sean Parker—played by Justin Timberlake, excellent as a happy wastrel. The Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross score is closer to the sinister Byrne and Eno we loved once than the flowery, love-struck Byrne and Eno in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. Fincher regular cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth keeps us oriented by making the walnut-lined tombs of Harvard so different from the lambency of the sun in Palo Alto. Aaron Sorkin’s wild, witty script hands out punishment that goes beyond the financial penalties: this is a comedy in the Balzac sense, a balancing act; the mockery and the disgust for greed matches the essential lightness of the situation. It’s only Facebook, after all. (RvB) B/;/@/ 2@3E3

Directors Nathan Greno and Byron Howard stress the most resonant interpretation of the tale: Rapunzel as a myth for all parts of the world where girls aren’t allowed to run free. The imprisoning witch Gothel is a curvy villainess feeding on the youth and hopes of the girl whom she imprisons. Remodeled as a Disney princess (voiced by Mandy Moore), this Rapunzel is freed by a rakish young thief. Third-act developments take the plot into a different resolution than the Brothers Grimm charted, adding to the surprise of the cartoon. You can see the influences and salute them as they pass: the antique charm of 3D Viewmaster fairy-tale slides, Romanian villages, Utah’s Canyonlands, the floating lanterns of the Japanese Obon festival; the block-headed yobs at the Snuggly Ducky tavern look as if they modeled for Britain’s Spitting Image. HE PERSONAL crises of constitutional monarchs don’t seem the stuff of fascinating drama. There’s a scene in The King’s Speech of a temper flare-up between George VI (Colin Firth) and his therapist (Geoffrey Rush). Facing the royal wrath coolly, the latter suggests, “You could put me in the Tower. He smiles as he says it, knowing full well those days are gone. The surprise here—and the reason why Firth gives the performance of his life—is that the joke ends. Firth gives us a shame-wracked, deeply affecting portrayal of a man born and bred to be a spokesman, yet who is handicapped with a crippling stammer. Set in the 1930s, The King’s Speech contrasts a pair of royals. Early on, Firth is the Duke of York, a family man with two daughters and a wife named Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter). The stammering Duke, known to his family as “Bertie, is the official spare to the heir, next in line to the Prince of Wales. A superlatively cast Guy Pearce embodies this Edward’s upper-class shadiness and monstrous entitlement. The Prince is the love slave of a twice-married American named Simpson; his affair and his indifference to world troubles (“Hitler will sort them out, he offers) are pushing events to a constitutional crisis. A mess. And the man tapped to solve it is Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), a down-at-the-heels Australian speech therapist on London’s Hartley Street. The Duke is a prickly, shy patient. It takes much coaxing to get him to practice odd exercises to firm up his larynx, and to expose the Freudian traumas that are tying his tongue. Imagine what it would

be like to grow up facing Queen Victoria across the breakfast table. And as the bearded old king George V, Michael Gambon shows the kind of snarling fierceness that would unman any son. Most of The King’s Speech is an inspired actor’s duel about the conflict between pride and need. Rush’s wit and nimbleness counterpoints this story of majesty. This agreeably homely actor’s gregariousness also shows us the climber in Logue. He likes to flabbergast the King into speaking without thinking, even if it takes pouncing on the monarch’s throne to do it. Logue is as altruistic as a good healer ought to be. But, believably, he does look out for himself. Bonham Carter’s portrayal of the lady we all remember as the doddering Queen Mother is a pleasure, too. This elder Elizabeth was a blueblood, but by royal lights she was officially a commoner. This might be reflected in the mischief Bonham Carter displays; she knows how to pull rank when it amuses her. The source book for this film claims that Logue personally saved the monarchy by helping the new king to
raise his voice against Hitler. This typical bit of biopic inflation may be why the primarily comedic actor Timothy Spall is cast as Winston Churchill. It’s a spot of comic relief by caricature. However, in making him slightly comic, director Tom Hooper diminishes the speaker who actually rallied the world against Hitler. The King’s Speech is almost exactly as tragic as it is comic. When we see Firth’s Bertie, figged up in braid and medals, in a green tunic and stiff collar that looks about as comfortable as an Iron Maiden, one’s heart goes out to him. The wrongness of doing this to a person—of making a king out of some unwilling soul—strikes one harder than the usual Masterpiece Theater assurances that there will always be an England.

Astrology Free Will
By Rob Brezsny
For the week of December 22 /@73A (March 21–April 19): “There’s always one moment in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in, wrote novelist Graham Greene. I’ll add to that: There are at least three moments in adulthood when a new door opens and invites the rest of the future in. Judging by the astrological omens, I’m guessing that one such breakthrough lies ahead for you in 2011. What can you do to expedite and encourage fate’s summons? Here’s one possibility: Surrender to the naked truth of what you love. B/C@CA (April 20–May 20): If oil companies were given permission to sink their drilling rigs into the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the petroleum they produced would ultimately lower gasoline prices by four cents per gallon. To my mind, that’s not a good trade-off. Let this scenario serve as a cautionary metaphor for you in 2011, Taurus. Don’t share your pristine wilderness or soulful beauty with exploitative types who offer iffy rewards. Instead, hold out for those who appreciate you profoundly and whose own gifts help you to thrive.
53;7<7 (May 21–June 20): Freud said that among all human endeavors, there were three “impossible professions that inevitably yielded unsatisfying results. They were child-rearing, the governing of nations and psychoanalysis. My own experiences don’t entirely confirm this. My parents raised me pretty well and I’ve given my daughter a decent upbringing. Of the nine psychotherapists I’ve consulted in my life, two were excellent healers and none were damaging. But even those relatively winning projects were sometimes fraught with unsolvable riddles, chronic frustrations and maddening uncertainties. I bring this up, Gemini, because I think 2011 will be a time when you will generate far more gratification and success than usual in your own versions of “impossible professions. Unsolvable riddles, chronic frustrations, and maddening uncertainties won’t be completely absent, but they could very well be at an all-time low. 1/<13@ (June 21–July 22): “We have to believe
Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital Serving you with thorough and compassionate care for more than 45 years
in free will. We have no choice. So said author Isaac Bashevis Singer. I encourage you to adopt that puckish thought as your motto in 2011, my fellow Cancerian. According to my reading of the astrological omens, this will be our year to supercharge our willpower and intensify our ability to carry out our plans—but always with good humor and a highly tuned sense of irony. In fact, one of the best ways to deepen our command over our own unconscious impulses and the caprices of fate will be to take ourselves—and everything else, too—less seriously.
:3= (July 23–Aug. 22): The coming year will be a

time to think big—maybe even bigger than you’ve dared to think in over a decade. That doesn’t mean you should be rash, reckless, or unrealistic. On the contrary. Your expansive dreams should be carefully wrought and anchored in a detailed understanding of how things actually work. As an example of what not to do, learn from Snoop Dog. The rapper wanted to rent all 62 square miles of the small European nation of Liechtenstein so he could film his music video there. Liechtenstein authorities turned him down, but only because his team didn’t ask far enough in advance. Had he been better organized, the whole country could have been his.
D7@5= (Aug. 23–Sept. 22): An Oregon man named Don Wesson stopped his truck by the side of the road and took home a 40-pound rock that caught his eye. That was more than a decade ago. For years he used it as part of a border to prevent his dog from messing up his garden. Then he saw a TV show about meteorites and brought the rock to scientists. They told him it was a 4.5 billion-year-old meteorite that fell to earth long ago and originally came from the asteroid belt. Other experts told him he could probably sell the exotic artifact for as much as $40,000. I predict a metaphorically similar development in your life during the coming year: the discovery of a valuable old thing from far away that you will underestimate at first. :70@/ (Sept. 23–Oct. 22): Richard Grossinger is my friend, my teacher and the brilliant author of numerous books. (His latest is called 2013.) He is also a humble adept in the high art of gratitude. On his website, he has a page devoted to expressing vivid appreciation for the 71 best teachers of his life. (bit.ly/ YourTeachers) His testimony is a riveting and touching reminder of how each of us is a creation
of all the important people we’ve loved and hated. Compiling such a list should, I think, be a rite of passage for anyone who aspires to be an authentic human being. There will never be a better time than 2011 for you to do this work yourself, Libra.
A1=@>7= (Oct. 23–Nov. 21): “Just when I found out the meaning of life, said comedian George Carlin, “they changed it. I’m hoping that will be one of your top inspirational jokes in 2011, Scorpio. If all goes well, you will no longer be content with all your previous answers to the question “What is the meaning of life?—either because “they changed it, as Carlin suggested, or because it’s no longer interesting or useful to you. This is very good news, in my opinion. You will have the invigorating privilege of going off in search of fresh answers to the riddle of the ages! A/57BB/@7CA (Nov. 22–Dec. 21): The United Nations has declared that 2011 will be the International Year of Chemistry—a time to honor the role chemistry plays in our lives. Meanwhile, you Sagittarians will be celebrating your own personal Year of Chemistry, although in a different sense of the word—the sense that means natural attraction, spontaneous connection, intuitive allure, and uncanny synchronicity. Don’t let this abundance of grace make you overconfident, and don’t just sit back and let it run wild. Be a master chemist intent on rigorously cultivating the very best experiments. 1/>@71=@< (Dec. 22–Jan. 19): I have tracked down a formula that I think should be one of your central ongoing meditations in 2011. It’s from newsman David Brinkley: “A successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at him or her. In the coming months you will be extra smart about knowing which of these bricks to use and how exactly to position them in your foundation. And more than that, Capricorn: You will have special insight not only about bricks that have been flung fairly recently, but also about those that have been hurled at any time in your life. /?C/@7CA (Jan. 20–Feb. 18): The city of Stockholm, Sweden, consists of 14 islands that are spanned by more than 50 bridges. It’s a beautiful, clean, culturally rich place that’s ranked among the best urban centers in the world. I’m hoping that in the coming year you will develop a certain resemblance to it. With a little luck and a clear intention to forge strong new links, you will connect the many fragmented areas of your life, creating a unified network that ensures each part is humming in resonance with the whole. In fact, let’s call 2011 your Bridge-Building Year. >7A13A (Feb. 19–March 20): At age 19, I wanted to be a poet when I grew up. My goal was to write a poem every day forever. And yet I had almost no ambition to get published. I was satisfied to bask in the ecstatic epiphany that accompanied each fresh poetic eruption. Then one day I was browsing in a bookshop and saw a flier for a big upcoming poetry reading. It included every major poet in my thenhometown of Santa Cruz—except me. I was shocked and hurt. Why was I left out? Eventually I realized it was because all the other poets listed had written a book. From that moment on I was obsessively driven to publish my own tome. A year later, after much hard work, it came to pass. I would love to see you experience a similar wake-up call in 2011, Pisces: a friendly jolt that motivates you to rise to the next level.
