Emoticon Rollercoaster A pithy look back on the year’s ups and downs 8/<C/@G The year begins badly, with a Jan. 1 murder-suicide. Victim Nichole “Nikki Schrock of Seaside is found next to Illya Cavlan of San Jose at the 7-Eleven at Ocean Street and Broadway before dawn. In spite of the new ban on smoking on Pacific Avenue and Main Beach, the American Lung Association gives Santa Cruz a “D in its annual Tobacco Report Card—the same crummy grade that prompted councilmembers to pass the ban in the first place. Says a steamed Mayor Mike Rotkin of the ALA, “I don’t ever want to talk to these people again. The Vets Hall on Front Street is closed indefinitely and a full architectural assessment ordered after county inspectors find that the rebar in the 1932 building is too rusty to survive an earthquake. On Jan. 23, Santa Cruz records its second and third homicides with the deaths of Alejandro Nava-Gonzales and Oscar Ventura in a Lower Ocean neighborhood apartment. Santa Cruz County names its first poet laureate, Gary Young.
After eight years in court, the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana finally exhales when the federal government stands down from its defense of a 2002 raid on WAMM property. The change comes from an Obama administration directive urging feds not to bother pursuing medical marijuana cases in states where it’s legal.
430@C/@G A wayward pink flamingo, likely escaped from some zoo, shows up in Elkhorn Slough. Dubbed “Pinky, the critter seems on friendly terms with local pelicans and egrets. Santa Cruz is ranked as the 14th happiest place in the United States, according to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. A scientific review committee for the Department of Pesticide Regulation releases its report on methyl iodide, a new strawberry fumigant proposed as a replacement for phased-out methyl bromide. The panel calls it a “highly toxic chemical the use of which would have “a significant adverse impact on the public health.

Santa Cruz County ranks among the healthiest places to live in California, coming in at No. 8, according to a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation survey. Free parking in downtown Santa Cruz all but comes to an end when the parking garage at Cedar and Church and the lot at Cedar and Cathcart start charging 50 cents per hour to park. The move is supposed to raise $355,000 a year for the cashstrapped city.
;/@16 Lowell Darling, brother of Darling House owner and Democratic Party operative Darrell Darling, files to run for governor against Jerry Brown, just as he did in 1978 in a satirical bit of political theater. Darling says this time he’s really campaigning against California’s two-thirds majority requirement to pass a budget. Santa Cruz City Council votes to limit the number of pot clubs in town to two. Ever concerned about the less fortunate, councilmembers also cite the need for wheelchair access in the clubs’ cultivation areas. The Coastal Commission puts the kibosh on the Arana Gulch bike path, capping 15 years of fighting over the fate of the 68-acre greenbelt. In nixing it, the commissioners override their own staff recommendations and a U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service endorsement. The national health care reform bill passes on March 21.
The California Department of Food and Agriculture announces that it will abandon attempts to eradicate the light brown apple moth and instead just try to control its spread—meaning, among other things, no more aerial spraying.
/>@7: The Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission votes unanimously to purchase the 32-mile Union Pacific rail line for $14.2 million UCSC suspends the Community Studies program.

3;=B71=< @=::3@1=/AB3@ Nick Meriwether, an oral historian at the South Caroliniana Library, is named to the position of Grateful Dead archivist at UCSC. Santa Cruz County supes approve the concept of a ban on one-use shopping bags, which pollute waterways and harm marine life. An EIR begins to assess—wait for it—the environmental impacts of a ban. The Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explodes in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20. Santa Cruz-based Ocean Conservancy VicePresident Dennis Takahashi Kelso, who helped oversee the Exxon Valdez cleanup in 1989, starts work in the Gulf. Carl Reimer, 19, is shot by alleged gang members in Grandview Park on Santa Cruz’s Westside.
; /G A May Day street party and demonstration on Pacific Avenue devolves into mayhem as vandals begin breaking windows and spray-painting graffiti on business and city property. The damage to 18 affected businesses, said to total some $100,000, is widely blamed on local anarchists affiliated with the SubRosa CafÊ, though investigators never prove a link. One man, transient Jimi Haynes of Modesto, is arrested and later sentenced to two years in prison for felony vandalism. On May 4, councilmembers respond to freaked-out citizens by agreeing to fill eight vacant police positions at an estimated $1 million—despite a $4 million deficit. United States rider David Zabriskie wins Stage 3 of the Amgen Tour of California, which finishes on Beach Street at the Boardwalk. A Felton woman complains to Santa Cruz County Animal Services that her horse has been sexually assaulted in a pasture near Graham Hill and Mount Hermon roads. When she went to see her horse, she found it tied to a tree with a stranger standing beside it, pulling up his pants.
SCPD puts 82 offending Santa Cruz homes on a list of “loud and unruly party houses. Landing on the list means that if the cops show up during another rager, you get a $1,000 ticket and bill for the time of every cop and employee who handled your stupid party house case.
8C<3 Residents of Davenport face huge utility fee increases—a 74 percent hike for sewer rates and a 10 percent rise in water fees—following the January closure of Cemex, which subsidized the county-run utilities. Compassion Over Killing posts video on YouTube showing chicks at Cal-Cruz Hatchery being mistreated after the District Attorney’s office refuses to take up the case. Santa Cruz County Animal Services investigates the charges and in the process confiscates 88 chicks and ducklings, 40 of which have to be euthanized. With two weeks till retirement, outgoing Santa Cruz City Manager Dick Wilson says current pension plans for public employees, especially cops and firefighters, are “completely unsustainable. A Santa Cruz Weekly investigation shows that Santa Cruz pays about 40 percent more than surrounding cities on pensions for its finest and bravest. Kombucha is pulled from shelves in local stores owing to high alcohol content in some bottles. (It is, after all, fermented.) In the run-up to the election for District 4 Supervisor, the candidacy of Watsonville councilmember Emilio Martinez suffers a blow when media report on a prank played years ago on a former co-worker in which he dropped 15 f-bombs and prompted a police investigation.
8 C :G Homeless activists and their supporters start camping outside the Santa Cruz County Courthouse to protest the city’s sleeping ban. In August, “Peace Camp 2010â€? relocates to City Hall, and in early October it disbands. ¨ "

The new $15 million Marine Sanctuary Center across from the wharf breaks ground. CNN and Money Magazine list Santa Cruz as one of the best places in the nation to find a rich and single partner, as almost half the population (45 percent) is single and average family income is over $90,000. Santa Cruz City Council approves a $78 million city budget with a $2.2 million deficit. A 41-year-old woman is killed in what police think may be a domestic violence incident, marking the city’s sixth homicide of the year, two more than in all of 2009.
/C5CAB The sea otter population declines for a second year in a row. The CaliforniaFIRST solar financing program, which was set to go in 14 California counties, stalls out when mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac object, saying they fear the assessment liens could win out over mortgages in the event of foreclosure. Santa Cruz says thanks, but no thanks to next year’s Amgen stop. Santa Cruz Democrat and former 27th District Assemblyman John Laird loses a runoff election for the Senate District 15 seat to Republican Sam Blakeslee of San Luis Obispo. Blakeslee’s victory in the heavily gerrymandered district preserves the status quo. A CHP officer stops Santa Cruz Councilmember Tony Madrigal on Highway 1 for reckless driving (he was texting and typing). Madrigal fails to show up for his court date and a bench warrant is issued; he gets community service.

3;=B71=< @=::3@1=/AB3@ The city of Santa Cruz hires three security guards with First Alarm to patrol downtown at a cost of $5,000 a month. In October the deal is extended through the end of the year. Jonathan Kolodinski, proprietor of the Crème de Canna dispensary, gets his 15 seconds of national fame for his production of medical marijuana-laced ice cream in flavors like Banannabis Foster. The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors puts a moratorium on smart meter installation in unincorporated parts of the county through the end of the year. The California Dental Association Foundation provides Watsonville with a $1.6 million grant to build and operate a fluoridation system, and the Watsonville City Council votes to accept it. Steven Vogt, UCSC professor of astronomy, leads a team that locates the first planet thought to be capable of sustaining life: Gliese 581g, in the constellation Libra.
=1B=03@ For-profit health-care giant Community Health Systems stonewalls Watsonville Community Hospital nurses in negotiations. Nurses strike, saying they’re unable to properly care for patients under current conditions. The Regional Transportation Commission meets a critical deadline to get $10.2 million in state funding for the 32-mile Union Pacific rail line. Sierra Northern Railway is set to run tourist trains on the line; pilot runs could begin as soon as May 2011. With CaliforniaFIRST dead, Santa Cruz–based Ecology Action gets a contract to run a $33 million solar and alternative energy financing program with money from the feds. Some 20,000 revelers descend on downtown Santa Cruz for Halloween, and not a single one is stabbed or shot.

It’s official: Santa Cruz has grown up, cut its hair and bought some Dockers. Voters brushed off progressives and put moderate, biz-friendly city council candidates Hilary Bryant, Dave Terrazas and incumbent Lynn Robinson into office, signaling the advent of a new era in Santa Cruz politics. University of California raises tuition another 8 percent, bringing the total increase since 2008 to 40 percent. On a trip to Dominican Hospital for an MRI, Santa Cruz County jail inmate Maurice Ainsworth overpowers a sheriff ’s deputy, seizes her weapon and takes off toward a Prospect Heights neighborhood, where he is captured five hours later. Eight and a half years after being ejected from a council meeting for giving a Nazi salute, Robert Norse wins a victory over the city of Santa Cruz when the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals orders a new trial, saying Norse was a victim of “viewpoint discrimination.â€? ROM anarchist to Zen master, New Year’s Eve celebrations in Santa Cruz are a cross section of our fair city’s rich diversity. Whether a person wants to march through the streets or meditate, rub up against a sexy stranger, mine a buffet for all it’s worth or just catch some great live music, there’s a party for every persuasion. Not afraid to be of service, we’ve compiled a guide to the best parties of (the last night of ) the year. AVhi C^\]i (5pm, meet at Saturn CafĂŠ parking lot; free; LastNightDIY.org) was originally formed in opposition to the corporate and city-sponsored First Night Santa Cruz (cancelled in 2005, cue victory gloat). The authorities don’t much like the fact that it’s unpermitted; organizer Wes Modes was fined $250 for the 2010 event. While there’s no telling what folks will do when collected for the parade—billed as a decentralized, D.I.Y. spontaneous gathering—past years have seen appearances by puppeteers, square dancers, fire dancers and mariachi musicians, among many others. Those homesick for Burning Man can join like-minded individuals under a 36-foot geodesic dome draped in silk, filled with cushions and erected behind the 418 Project for I^bWVkVi^ (8pm; $25; 418 Front St., Santa Cruz; Timbavati.info). Organizers Laura Bishop (an energy healer) and Jonah Kai (a sound healer) call it a “conscious gathering,â€? complete with live music,

3/@B6G 23:756BA SURPRISINGLY, lots of kids with adults in tow marched up the stairs to the Museum of Art & History on a recent rainy weekend. In the lobby, a few seriously playful men in conductor hats sat behind a miniature landscape where long streams of colorful carriages careened over tiny tracks in a high-speed choreography of all-out races and near-misses: MAH’s annual “Toy Trains family exhibit. Excited young voices rose cheerfully to MAH’s second floor and the “clay part of the Association of Clay and Glass Artists of California exhibition, which opened last week. Entering the expansive Solari Gallery feels like arriving at an already-buzzing party where lots of familiar faces turn in welcome. Brightly lit, it’s an ocean of pedestal islands with a horizon of ingenious wall displays that support irrefutable evidence that California is the heartland of American ceramics. Families who may have come to MAH to see “Toy Trains now gather around these pedestals, perhaps surprised that art can be so instantly engaging. Kids head for the colorful grinning ceramic lion head and paws emerging from a far wall, reaching for a tableful of vegetables: D7197 5C<B63@’s Carrot Stew Shared with Lions. A towering inferno of twisting metal and billowing guitar riffs, High on Fire are not so much a band as a force of nature. The trio’s heady brew of stoner rock and metal always errs on the side of excess, with labyrinthine guitar lines that weave in and out of unyielding bass-and-drum patterns. Though singer Matt Pike’s D&D-inspired lyrics straddle the line between awesome and ridiculous, the unholy din he conjures always resides in the former category. High on Fire’s long-awaited 2010 album Snakes for the Divine nearly matches the band’s modern classic Surrounded by Thieves, with songs like “Holy Flames of the Firespitter standing alongside its imposing best. Brookdale Lodge; $20; 8pm. (Paul M. Davis)
The musical universe of Antsy McClain is one in which cowboy jazz, Tex-Mex, rock and country collide to paint an upbeat and vivid picture of life among the trailers. A self-proclaimed humorist bearing tales of tragicomic heroes and outspoken silver-haired ladies, McClain has recently been revealing his serious side with an expanded repertoire that includes heartfelt ballads, songs of lost love and ruminations on the painful side of life. McClain will be accompanied by his beloved band the Trailer Park Troubadours, a “revolving cadre of top-notch pickers, with a special treat: a one-night-only appearance by original Troubadour Stephen Fleming. Rio Theatre; $27.50 general/$37.50 gold circle; 9pm. (Cat Johnson)
One of Santa Cruz’s most dependable live acts, SambadĂĄ celebrates New Year’s Eve with a night of high-octane samba, salsa, reggae and hip-hop. It’s a formula that has worked for the band over the past decade, garnering it a fanatical following on the road. The brainchild of local Brazilian expatriates Papiba Godinho and Dandha da Hora, Sambadå’s percussive stew drives a brand of polyglot funk and Brazilian soul that has become the group’s unmistakable trademark. The band’s intense and irresistibly joyous celebrations of dance and life are the perfect accompaniment to celebrating Santa Cruz’s most-loved holiday. E==AB3@ For a sense of what Wooster’s all about, look no further than this local funk sensation’s new album, The Heights of Things. B63 A:/193@A Ska isn’t quite the force it was in the late ’90s, when it dominated alternative airwaves with frustrating insistence, but the benefit of the ska bubble bursting is that it separated the two-stepping lifers from the pretenders. New York’s the Slackers are clearly in for the long haul, about to enter their third decade turning out garage rock–tinged ska. While the band are respectful traditionalists, they have an impressive range, bringing in elements of jazz, rocksteady reggae and ’60s soul, demonstrating that there is a sophistication and level of accomplishment that eludes many of their peers. =@5=<3 The bulk of this squad of retro“soulâ€?diers is made up of members of the Dap Kings and Breakestra, which explains the heaping servings of funk and reggae doled out at an Orgone party. For over 10 years Orgone’s unique twist on established musical flavors has gotten hip-hop fans into Ray Charles and gospel listeners to give Snoop Dogg a try. Lead vocalist Franny Franklin has been compared to sultry siren Amy Winehouse (minus the towering beehive hair-do and drunken flails about town) and is backed by a rich procession of brass vibrations and electric riffs. The 13-piece Brooklyn-by-way-of-theBay-Area ensemble takes its name from the bus stop drummer Charles Ferguson lived off while studying music in Ghana and the majority of its members from the Berkeley High Jazz Ensemble. The twin influences can be heard in the jazzy Afrobeats produced by an eight-member rhythm section that unites drums, bass, two guitars, three percussionists and a keyboard. Anchored by a solid foundation in classic jazz and heavily influenced by African superstar Fela Kuti, the band produces a raucous but polished melding of both. Unreality Check The cinematic year of uncertain realities draws to a close 0G @716/@2 D=< 0CA/19

CCORDING to box-officefilms.com, as of Dec. 15, of the Top 100 films of 2010, 18 were sequels and 13 were remakes, spinoffs or adaptations of other media. These figures are presented for educational purposes only. They suggest, though, that if you went to see one of the Top 100 films, you had approximately a one-third chance of seeing something you’d seen before. Heavy in 2010 was the theme of uncertainty and descent into dream wonderlands; Alice herself made a notable appearance. Often what was offered wasn’t just escapism but absolute solipsism—that is, the denial that there really was such a thing as an outside world. “We’ll be living on the Internet, enthuses Sean Parker in The Social Network, as if that weren’t just possible but desirable. Leonardo DiCaprio, yesterday’s beloved romantic lead, this year became today’s confused dream-weaver, with two roles as a widower who’d left reality. First he was a castaway in Shutter Island. Next he was the suave dream date in Inception, a film that suggested the ultimate human connections—between wife and husband, father and son—were all just fantasies waiting to be gamed by engineers. Even the grittier indie cinema kept us on shaky ground. True Grit took pleasure in aliases. It was one surprise to discover that there was more of the sound and sense of Shakespeare in The King’s Speech then there was in Julie Taymor’s Tempest. It was another to find more of the heft of Shakespeare in this Western than there
:=<5 2/G¸A 8=C@<3G 7<B= <756B Relief at the end of an uncomfortable voyage proves premature for Woody and the gang in ‘Toy Story 3.’
was in Taymor’s own island of fantasy, disguise and impersonation. The elaborate vocabulary of the searchers is one of True Grit’s main pleasures. The Coens aren’t the first directors to think of the West as a place of confidence men and noms de plains, well aware of the legends they’ll leave behind. However, True Grit is just one 2010 film raising the question of how one can disappear into a new life. Catfish and Exit Through the Gift Shop demonstrate how a false front can be slapped up fast. The pose of the artist is the easiest to adopt and the hardest to expose: this would seem to be some of the text in the roundly overpraised Tiny Furniture. There we note the elevated social status of out-and-out charlatans: the YouTube sensation who sits on his rocking horse and mangles Nietzsche; the sous chef who gets a name as an intellectual, not through the intelligent way in which he conducts himself but because of what he’s been rumored to be reading. So consider “Mr Brain Wash, the popular if egregious artist in Exit Through
the Gift Shop. He may (it’s suspected) be a sock puppet of the courageous Banksy. But does “MBW have to be Banksy? Who do you have to be to make bad art? Such is the lesson in the story of the documentary Catfish, when we learn the true identity behind a Facebook avatar, a pretty girl. Supposedly, she’s a wizard of the lively and the plastic arts. (“Is there nothing you can’t do?, exclaims her victim.) Pat Tillman’s afterlife, seen in the documentary The Tillman Story, shows how the State Department played identity games with a casualty of Afghanistan. Tillman’s bravery and intelligence could have made this country better. Instead, craven opportunists smelted him into a war monument. Some thought of Toy Story 3 as simply understood, funny adventure. But children watch it and face their terrors of abandonment. Adults watch it and face their terrors of obsolescence, of being sent to The Home when they age. On one hand, Toy Story 3 was a rousing adventure about slave labor and escape;
on the other, it’s a metaphorical tale of caring parents who must be cared for themselves someday. And then the year brought us the sumptuous I Am Love, with Tilda Swinton torn between the role of an unmarried lover or the respectable mother of a well-off family. And in the British film Fish Tank, a too-young girl of the projects convinces herself that she’s old enough to be a lover. There were also fantasies of insane brutality; sometimes delightfully grisly, as in the uproarious Machete, or the indefensible yet lovable Jackass 3D. The fantasies were sometimes infantile in a different way. Sometimes they were love stories taking places in scuffproofed, friction-free Manhattans and Los Angeleses that could only have been manufactured by CGI, as in the New York in the arguably worst of 2010, The Back Up Plan, where every billb-the real world: films sold to a crowd wondering whether they woke or slept.

In this classic Billy Wilder movie, an ambitious young businessman, C.C. Baxter ( Jack Lemmon), devises an unconventional scheme he hopes will help him climb the corporate ladder: allowing executives from the insurance company he works for to use his apartment for their extramarital trysts. Complications arise when Miss Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), also a company employee and the mistress of one of Baxter’s managers, attempts suicide in the apartment and Baxter must nurse her back to health. On one side she’s muscled by her heartless, sexually harassing director (a convincing Vincent Cassel); on the other, she’s smothered by her mother (Barbara Hershey). And then a new dancer (Mila Kunis) arrives from San Francisco to inspire sexual panic and precipitate disaster. In the rehearsal scenes, the camera spins around with the dancers, and we hear the scuffing of their feet and their harsh panting, or we watch in close-up as a slipper is stabbed, sliced and stitched into shape. And she’s not a sweeping force meeting an equal, opposite reaction in Gyllenhaal, who is about as deep as Jason Biggs from the American Pie movies. Under the direction of the nice guy who created Thirtysomething, it carries the kind of happy ending you’d need a happiness drug to accept. (RvB) % 6=C@A (R; 94 min.) 127 Hours is director Danny Boyle’s version of the truelife story of climber Aron Ralston. In spring 2003, Ralston was pinned under a half-ton boulder in a remote Utah canyon; what he did to survive
became worldwide news. 127 Hours records an ordeal so singular, Poe couldn’t improve on it. Unfortunately, Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) tries to blow up the story’s elemental horror through pyrotechnics. He starts with a burst of relentless motion, as in his Trainspotting. Unfortunately, this ADD style has been thoroughly appropriated for sports-drink commercials. James Franco’s visceral acting in the service of this horror story probably should be praised, even if it’s not a pleasure to watch. One would have to be fairly simpleminded to think of this ghastly story as some kind of triumph of the human spirit. (RvB) B/<5:32 (PG; 153 min.) Directors Nathan Greno and Byron Howard stress the most resonant interpretation of the tale: Rapunzel as a myth for all parts of the world where girls aren’t allowed to run free. The imprisoning witch Gothel is a curvy villainess feeding on the youth and hopes of the girl whom she
imprisons. Remodeled as a Disney princess (voiced by Mandy Moore), this Rapunzel is freed by a rakish young thief. Third-act developments take the plot into a different resolution than the Brothers Grimm charted, adding to the surprise of the cartoon. You can see the inf luences and salute them as they pass: the antique charm of 3D Viewmaster fairytale slides, Romanian villages, Utah’s Canyonlands, the f loating lanterns of the Japanese Obon festival; the block-headed yobs at the Snuggly Ducky tavern look as if they modeled for Britain’s Spitting Image. As for actual hero Maximus the horse, there hasn’t been such a hilarious steed since Chuck Jones died. (RvB) B63 B=C@7AB (PG-13; 114 min.) Johnny Depp stars as Frank, a hapless American tourist unlucky enough to have been targeted by Elise, a woman with a dangerous past, played by Angelina Jolie. Frank attempts to kindle a romance while Elise attempts to
evade her pursuers—a criminal ex-boyfriend, the gangster he stole from and the agent (Paul Bettany) hot on their trail. B@=< :35/1G (PG; 127 min.) In this highly anticipated remake of the 1982 cult sci-fi f lick, wonder programmerturned-hacker Kevin Flynn ( Jeff Bridges) must beat a series of computer games from the inside. Featuring a soundtrack composed by legendary electronic duo Daft Punk. B@C3 5@7B (PG-13; 128 min.) Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld), a self-assured 14-year-old, arrives in Fort Smith, Ark., in the early 1880s to track down Tom Cheney ( Josh Brolin), the hired hand who murdered her father. The sheriff lists some U.S. marshals who could track him. Mattie chooses Reuben “Rooster Cogburn ( Jeff Bridges): ruthless and dead to fear, if often dead to the world. Mattie offers the marshal a $50 reward to cross into the Choctaw lands to retrieve Cheney. While waiting for
his decision, Mattie encounters LaBoeuf (Matt Damon), a fancy, buckskincovered ranger who is seeking Cheney for a previous murder down in Texas. The three, reluctantly matched, draw closer to the killer but feud along the way. Bridges lulls us with his take on the part, doing things that John Wayne wasn’t capable of as an actor, expressing the desperate underside of a bluff, a rowdier level of buffoonery and a quitter’s despair. The Coens have the bravery to deliver the downbeat coda to this story left out in 1969. It increases the stature of this film, its depth, beauty and sadness. (RvB) G=57 03/@ (PG; 80 min.) Dan Aykroyd voices Yogi and Justin Timberlake voices Boo Boo in this animated film based on the longrunning 1960s HannaBarbera cartoon series about bears who steal “pic-a-nic baskets from campers in Jellystone Park. Also starring Tom Cavanagh as Ranger Smith.

everything is different doesn’t mean anything has changed, said writer Irene Peter. That should be cautionary advice for you in 2011, Aries. From what I can tell, it will be relatively easy for you to rearrange the way things look, but trickier to transform them from the inside out. You will have to be vigilant to keep from getting swept up in the giddiness of big talk at the expense of practical action. You’ll have to push hard to make sure that seductive ideas are translated into concrete details. Can you do it? I think you can.
B/C@CA (April 20–May 20): In 1967, John McCain was a U.S. Navy pilot fighting in Vietnam. Shot down during a bombing mission, he was captured and jailed in the notorious Hanoi Hilton prison camp, where he was tortured. After being freed in 1973, he returned to the U.S. and eventually launched a political career. When he ran for president in 2008, his candidacy got an endorsement from an unlikely source: Tran Trong Duyet, the Vietnamese prison commander who had supervised his torture. In the coming months, Taurus, I expect you to experience a turnaround that will have comparable poetic justice. I’m not sure how it will unfold. Maybe an adversary will praise you, a person who wounded you will make amends, or a force of nature that once opposed you will come over to your side. Twentyeleven will be a Year of Vindicating Reversals.
53;7<7 (May 21–June 20): Can you finally escape the pain you got imprinted with during adolescence? Is it a realistic possibility that you could triumph over the conditioning you absorbed before you knew how to talk? Do you have the power to do what few of us have done, which is to get out from under the weight of the past, shed the inertia of your memories, and live brave and free in the raw truth of NOW? If there will ever in your life be a time when you can accomplish at least some of this noble quest, Gemini, it will be in 2011.
1/<13@ (June 21–July 22): Decades ago, the U.S. built a network of sleek expressways to make it fast and easy for cars to travel between cities. But like many of America’s impressive engineering feats, this one took little account of what the human soul might enjoy. Ugly buildings or empty spaces surround many of those roads. Visually, the difference between I-95 in Georgia and I-74 in Illinois is negligible. “The Interstate highway system has made it possible, said Charles Kuralt, “to go from sea to shining sea without seeing anything. You cannot afford to let this be your operative metaphor in 2011, Cancerian. Your potential for rapid, extensive progress is sizable, but it would be a mistake to barrel along with your eyes fixed on the prize in the distance as you neglect what’s happening along the way. Be both global and local; romance the details as you revel in the big picture. :3= (July 23–Aug. 22): Fixing people’s teeth is one of Dr. Peter Kertesz’s specialties. The British dentist has a thriving business in London. Now and then he’s also called on to practice an exotic variation: animal dentistry. Recently, he corrected the tooth problems of two tigers in a zoo. Other species he has helped include elephants, whales and pandas. In 2011, Leo, I suggest you consider branching out like Dr. Kertesz. What would be the equivalent, in your domain, of expanding the ways you use your primary skills? D7@5= (Aug. 23–Sept. 22): “What can I do with this eternal longing? That’s the first line of “Assouf, a song by the African band Tinariwen. During the rest of the tune, the singer never offers a definitive answer to that plea, but as he tumbles and rumbles over the possibilities, the band plays a lot of righteous music. I suggest that you make Tinariwen’s cry your question of the year in 2011. It will be an excellent use of your time to meditate on how to call forth, nurture, and direct your ineffable, insatiable yearning. (Hear the song: http://tinyurl.com/Assouf.) :70@/ (Sept. 23–Oct. 22): In 2011, I believe you will have the chance to weave your fortunes together with an abundance of allies who are good for you. They will be your equals, they will share at least some of your most important values, and they will respect you for who you are. That’s excellent news, right? My only worry is that you might shy away from the demands that such invigorating collaborations will make on you. It would be less work, after all, to fall

A1=@>7= (Oct. 23–Nov. 21): Michelangelo didn’t think of himself as primarily a painter. Sculpture was his first love. Yet in 1508 he was coaxed into painting prodigious frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. As he worked for four years, covering 12,000 square feet with sublime images, he sometimes complained and felt resentful. The project took him away from two large sculptures he would have preferred to be working on. He feared his enemies had convinced the Pope to give him this task in order to demonstrate how mediocre his painting was. But today his work at the Sistine Chapel is regarded as a masterpiece. I suspect that in 2011 you may face a version of Michelangelo’s dilemma, Scorpio: being offered a job you don’t consider your forte. It’s quite possible, however, that accepting this “diversion will yield interesting results.
A/57BB/@7CA (Nov. 22–Dec. 21): “When I became a man I put away childish things, said Sagittarian author C.S. Lewis, “including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up. I suggest you take up that attitude yourself in 2011, Sagittarius. One of your top assignments in the coming months will be to play with greater intensity and more frequency and a heightened imagination. If you want to achieve your adult goals, you’ll be wise to recreate your childhood wisdom on a higher octave.

Today this describes many Westerners, not just Americans. We are adrift in the Age of the Short Attention Span—a time when the lessons of the past are becoming lost or irrelevant. But in 2011, I’ll be rooting for you to elude this curse, Capricorn. It’s crucial for you to be in close touch with both the lessons provided by the grand sweep of human civilization and by your own personal history.
/?C/@7CA (Jan. 20–Feb. 18): “The third-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking with the majority, said author A.A. Milne. “The second-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking with the minority. The first-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking. You will have an excellent chance to cultivate that definition of a first-rate mind in 2011, Aquarius. According to my reading of the astrological omens, life will be conspiring to strengthen your brain. You will have everything going for you if you make it your intention to sharpen your wits, use language more precisely, and see the world with greater clarity and objectivity. To get the fun started, make a list of what you could do to push your intelligence beyond its current limits. >7A13A (Feb. 19–March 20): “Anything you’re good at contributes to happiness, said philosopher Bertrand Russell. If I had my way, Pisces, you’d write that on a note and tape it to your bathroom mirror for the duration of 2011. I think it would raise your appreciation for the power your personal gifts have to bestow blessings on both yourself and others. And I hope it would inspire you to spend a lot of quality time finding out all you can about what you’re good at and deepening your capacity to do what you’re good at.
